“On Wednesday night (Sept. 14, 2011) at approximately 7:45 PM PDT,
in the Yuma, Arizona foothills, an incredibly bright flash - like a movie set light -
followed by a slow, horizontal, bright white, green and orange light.
Very impressive and not like anything we have ever seen.”

- Yuma, Arizona residents

September 15, 2011 Albuquerque, New Mexico - On Wednesday, September 14th, around 7:45 PM Pacific Daylight Time, a bright, green object with a red-orange tail was seen in the night sky moving west to east over Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, Las Vegas, Yuma and Phoenix, Arizona. TV stations and police received many emails and phone calls from residents. Here is a brief sampling of eyewitness reports on the internet:

Desert Hot Springs east of Riverside, California: At 7:45 PM, I saw a bright green object that looked like a shooting star magnified by 10, it was so big. The only other way I can describe it was a green ball of fire. I witnessed this far longer than any shooting star - about 5 seconds.

San Diego, California: Saw it on my way home from work around 7:40 pm. It was extremely bright greenish-blue with a very long tail. Before it disappeared over the hillside, it turned yellow-orange and then it was gone.

Yuma, Arizona foothills: This evening at approximately 7:45 PM Pacific, saw an incredibly bright flash - like a movie set light - followed by a slow, horizontal bright white, green and orange light. Very impressive and not like anything we have ever seen.

Las Vegas, Nevada: I also saw it on the drive home from work – a bright green fireball with yellowish tail. In the city you never see anything like that with all the lights. So, this green light was that bright - and bigger then what I've seen even away from city lights.

Some wondered if it was the early break up of NASA’s seven-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite put into orbit in 1991 and expected to come down and burn up in the atmosphere the end of this month? But Vandenberg AFB near Lompoc, California, confirmed there was no satellite fall. And the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that there were no aircraft incidents reported in the Western region.

Astronomers say it was probably a large meteorite breaking up, but have no proof. If it were a natural bolide, the green color suggests the object had magnesium or nickel in it. Orange usually means an object is moving in the Earth’s atmosphere at several miles per second.
