View Full Version : Banned from a website....curious as to why...any ideas?

I just found out this morning I was banned from the Godlikeproductions website...ok...stop laughing...

Anyway...I am neither hacker nor attacker....but I probably am pretty naive....any thoughts as to why last week I could read from their site and this morning my ISP address is banned? I thought perhaps it was because of my association with other sites but other than Avalon, a quilting board, and a survivalist forum (which I don't read anymore)...there aren't any others.

Just curious...if anyone would hazard a guess I would appreciate it...and mods...feel free to remove...I hate just taking up space here.

thanks all...

Were you a member?
If not, then that isn't uncommon, I have seen that before and it isn't about you.

...well...I didn't think it was about me ...I thought it was about the rest of you...:)

In all seriousness, though, my question was really about the timing. I've read articles on their site and ATS for years but why be banned now? In the grand scheme of things it's no biggie...just a little annoyance as to "why". I didn't bother with asking to be unbanned, either.

...morning I was banned from... ...if anyone would hazard a guess...

I normally do not post in these types of threads; however, I wish to say, "why does it matter"?

It could have simply been an error on one of their mods/admins, it could have been they did not like your hair or something you posted/or didn't... it could have even been ETs or one of the Bilderbergs conspiring.

I know your curiosity is and the feel of what happened feels like a personal attack. Regardless what it was (is), it appears you have no "control" over it and again I say - "why does it matter".

My words are in support of you.

You could have a little look at these listings of software if you feel you want to look at sites you are banned from via IP http://softwaretopic.informer.com/sonic-hide-ip/

Or just use another computer, each piece of equipment has its own unique IP address, change items.... its sort of like gun licencing its not the shooter that is licensed its the gun...know what I mean

I am banned at GLP and I've never been a member. I figure they just banned my general IP, but who knows. It's odd, but as Ka says, "why does it matter?"

...no I don't feel threatened or attacked...I'm simply curious. Perhaps I'm not being articulate enough. I'm simply wondering about the inter-connectedness of our internet visits....with a tad of healthy paranoia I suppose.

But it's all out of my mind now...after reading your supportive comments, King Anthony, I'm mentally kicking myself for asking the question in the first place. I should have asked GodLikeProductions instead of posing the question here where I assumed I'd find a few quick possibilities.

And as to the "what does it matter"...if it matters to me...it matters. If something "mattered" to you..it would matter, as well.

You are prob not banned but just refused access due to a few factors, if you email GLP and say you would like to participate, they will give you access. I had to do this a year or so ago. although i never participated.

I agree, nothing is more frustrating (annoying) then someone saying "no one else cares" when it bothers the one they are speaking to. My words "why does it matter" was not to imply or impose that how you value the subject is not important; rather, how important is it in the big picture of existence in your life - a standard I use for myself at times if/when I need is, "will this matter in ten years, one year or one hour"!?

Now that this is behind you... do you have any good recipes to share? :)

Have you actually been "banned" by the website ?
It sounds to me like that website, or a router in their network does not allow access from your IP address, and associated IP addresses.
I get this frequently, as I live in China.
Soemthing I've noticed on Avalon - For those members who HAVE NOT chosen their flag, the Avalon software recognises the IP address and puts up the appropriate flag. However, I've noticed that various members here have flags which do not correspond to their country or where they live. In fact Dennis's flag changed recently, I asked him about this, and he hasn't moved, he's in the USA, yet for the previous 3 months his flag was the Australian one.
Conclusion - Either some people are routed via different countries, or there is a discrepancy between the Internet routing protocols and the Avalonian software, possibly because some sub-net addresses have been changed.
Whatever - the suggestion to log on via another computer is a good one, and/or contact the administrators of the site.

I don't believe that's so. Your last chosen flag (for many members who joined in 2011, it would be the flag they selected early in the membership application process) is your flag, including the possibility of choosing no flag (the first, empty, choice on the alphabetic list of countries.)

You can change your flag on Settings -> Edit Profile.

If Dennis was flying some other countries flag, then it would be either by choice (perhaps forgotten now) or some software bug (that I have not noticed before.)

If one tries to go to GLP through any links, GLP's set-up will generally forbid it, and give a message about banned IP's and the like.

To enter GLP, do a search of Google or similar search engine, and then use the Google link to go in through GLP's actual front door.

Some understanding

Most people get a different ip after a predetermined time by your internet service provider, repeating over and over. You usually only have an ip for a few days before it loops. That is unless you request a static ip.

Sometimes you get an ip that someone miss used, for whatever reason, causing a number of issues.

This is a bad way of banning and is easily defeated. You can test it by using an anonimizing site or, by another name, a proxy.

But, isn't it nice to come here to PA without all the 'colourful language', 'backstabbing' and 'character assassinations'?? :whoo:

Same here.
I hit a link and that's where it took me, but there was a message saying my ISP was banned.

Hello Everyone,

I got banned from GLP too, even though I wasn't a member and never posted there. It happened after my IP address was banned from Atticus1.org. I also cannot get PC forum either. I asked Kerry and her crew about it, they said there was no problem, but had to approach my IP provider.

Carmody's advice is good. If I go to 'Start Page' or Google, key it in and you will get to GLP, rather than click on a link or in your favourites bar. I have yet to try that with the PC forum.

Anyway, just my experiences with it.

Cheers,
Lily

There is a suggestion that godlikeproductions does not like people people using the word TAVISTOCK INSTITUTE. Maybe that organisation runs GLP, and other likeminded sites.

When you joined, I believe you had to choose a flag. But this happened on the very first form you filled out, giving your name, email and date of birth, prior to even filling out the long form application. So you've like forgotten by now ;).

Don't be so damned insulting !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE NOT forgotten, I did not have to choose a flag.
I'm stating a fact, not an idea, if you don't believe me, that's upto you, but the fact remains as I've stated it.

I was blocked from GLP once. I asked why and was told that they use 3rd party block lists that can sometimes block whole ISP groups.

I investigated what 3rd party block lists could be all about and came up with one such list that has several option packages. GLP can apply whichever of those options they like.

It seems that the lists are created by user input and can include all sorts of reasons for your IP being included.

Some examples are:

You have used bit torrent applications.
You have downloaded cracked software or porn.
You are a suspected agency operative

etc etc.

I have tested this now, to verify that when someone first joins this forum, no default flag is selected based on IP address or some such.

I was not claiming, Mariposa, that you were wrong or forgetting what you saw the first time you logged in. I am quite certain, and was quite certain in my earlier post above, that you did indeed see your nations flag the very first time you logged in. Yes!

I am saying (and I have just verified that this is the case) that you actually chose that flag yourself, on the account creation screen (where you choose a user name, specify your password and provide your email address), prior to your first login ever happening. The last question on the account creation screen asks you to specify your Country, from a long pull down list of nations. Your choice of Country on the account creation screen subsequently determines what flag you will see, starting the very first time you log in to your newly created account.

Y'all just simmer down it's no big deal! The first time I logged on PA after I registered and selected US flag originally , I saw not the USA flag I thought I had selected. No big deal- I just asked the mods to change it and it was done immediately. Do'nt fret the small stuff!

@kathymarie it's probably the IP address, GLP is a funny website, in that it bans you one second and lets you on after you refresh the page sometimes, or just get another IP. it's not a personal thing. And others said just email them. now as someone asked what were you stitching when you tried to sign on there : P ?

@Mariposafe, for what its worth, i don't know why Paul sounded the way he did, but he was extremely helpful, patient and polite to me when i thought someone was hacking into my computers, even though we clearly established it wasn't from PA. So he is actually a helpful person, maybe he didn't mean to say what you understood him to say?

I use the flag of my country even though am not living in it atm, and wasn't in it when i signed on...so if you go to your profile, and the tab in the middle of that page, will ask country, and just put your country there and the flag you want will show up....HTH's.

I have an idea ... anyone who doesn't like their flag - edit your profile and change it. It's really easy.
