A drug found to triple a smoker's chances of quitting will not be officially available in Britain for another three years – even though it can be bought now for 12p a pill online

Nicotine substitute Tabex cannot be prescribed here although it has helped millions of people in eastern Europe during the past four decades.

The plant-based treatment has no known harmful side-effect and could save the NHS millions of pounds a year, it is claimed.

But it will not be cleared for up to three years because of what experts claim are ‘Alice in Wonderland’ drug regulations.

Instead, they fear that smokers will buy Tabex online despite the internet being flooded with poor quality counterfeit drugs.

The origins of Tabex can be traced to World War II when German and Russian soldiers satisfied their craving for nicotine by smoking laburnum leaves.

It has been extensively tested in eastern Europe but the trials were not considered robust enough to satisfy British regulators.

A new study has now found that people who wanted to stop smoking were 3.4 times more likely to succeed with Tabex.

More than eight per cent of those given the drug were able to avoid smoking for a year compared with 2.4 per cent of a placebo group, the trial involving 740 patients found.

Cancer Research UK’s Prof Robert West, who led the study, said: ‘It’s been available in central and eastern Europe for more than 40 years, we have safety data on millions of people and we know it’s effective but it’s not licensed in Britain.

‘One of the Alice in Wonderland things about the regulatory system is that it’s not designed for drugs that have been on the market for a long time. It’s designed for drugs you’re bringing from animals to humans.’

He claimed Tabex would be a tenth the price of standard treatment, Champix, which costs up to £150 for a 12-week course.

He added: ‘There’s nothing illegal about buying it online but there’s always the risk you might not get what you expect.’

The Department of Health said the drug ‘sounds promising’, adding: ‘We will look at whether it has prospects for use in the UK to help smokers quit

My opinion it’s banned because its extract of plant. These big pharmaceutical companies do nothing for the greater good. Its greed greed and more greed for them.

I believe also that most disease have been cured using the extract of plants from the Amazon, but these are locked away under lock and key by the big boys

This is great news, however damn Alice, I have a much more beneficial solution, legalise the green herb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcBnaA3LpZ4), and cure more ills. It would make a stack of tax whilst also decreasing the NHS and policing costs too. What great side effects! :p

I gave up smoking about four months ago ,overnight after thirty years.
I dont crave nicotine and if you ask any smoker why they smoke I think they will tell you its all to do with inhalation and exhalation.
it is in its infancy in Britain but vaping is the new substitute for smoking.
But it is a substitute, and if I run out of vaping products I will panic.

My girls both quit easily and on the spot after Laser Therapy........2.5 years ago and both doing fine........they were given detoxing vitamins to help with the physical symptoms and had about 2-3 days of being a little emotional........but not a single cigarette was smoked........it was amazing, relaxing and easy .......several other family members have also done this treatment with the same success.

Good thread. Only....

No, they fear people will buy it directly from the makers (which is the first result that comes up if you search for the brand name.)
They are not counterfeit, they're simply much cheaper than they would ever be if produced in the UK, for example. :-)

Scopolamine treatments work wonders as well but you will trip your balls off and it needs to be monitored by a doctor in terms of pill dosage. Scopolamine blocks your acetylcholine and muscarine receptors.

Sounds really good. Sign me up for a course of treatment!
And although some can easily quit, I cannot. Sorry to disappoint. It's like saying to someone who does heroine, "I can quit and so can you." It does not work like that. I never get sick, but I do not say to the sickly types that they do not have to get sick if they do not want to - maybe I should...

G'day All,

Found the article interesting so went for a looksey.
Here is a report from 'Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Review' about the plant (Cytisus laburnum) mentioned in the article:
'CYTISINE – FROM ETHOMEDICAL USE TO THE DEVELOPMENT AS A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE FOR SMOKING CESSATION'.

The report seems very positive, mentions the long history or trials done in Eastern Europe and says that cytisine works so well as it has a similar chemical makeup as nicotine with less of the side effects (though any amount of tar inhalation is questionable).

It is available for your perusal at:

Kind Regards, :yo:

E-Cigs are the devices on which you do 'Vaping' Vaping is a verb, E-cig is the noun-and yep i have been 'Vaping' for 18 months now
and have cut my Ciggie consumption into at least a third. An E-Cigarette is a battery with an Atomizer (a metal coil that heats up) you use
E-Juice which is made of either Propylene Glycol, or Vegetable Glycerine with-or-without Nicotine added to varying strengths-the battery powered Atomizer then
vaporizes the juice and you smoke it-no smell or nasty chemicals so you can 'Vape' inside offices/Houses/anywhere-it's great!

Its been about a year since Ive quit. I just stopped after about 17yrs.

My biggest problems were cravings after i eat or drink. A few times I would crave to smoke while trying to quit and do it but i got better and better at pulling away.

I found that my reason was equating smoking to relaxation(probably due to the process of inhaling exhaling as the trojan mentioned).

It wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be to quit. Maybe its just a mind thing. If you can find your reason, time, and activity you enjoy smoking you can find substitutions or just fight your way through the time over and over, I promise it will become easier and you'll look up and realize you haven't smoked in awhile.

Never quit quitting.

I quit for 9 months once and had nightmares I'd started up again. The cravings continued throughout. It was hell. Every day was a challenge.

Hey Aranuk. Vaping is using a vaporiser to heat a substance and inhaling the air which is then full of the substance in vapour form. Vaping heats a substance up to its point of volatility, while burning is a crude way of releasing the active components in a substance. Vaping, even when it uses 'electric cigarettes' which mimic smoking, is not actually smoking since the substance doesn't burn.

sorry stan, ive been away from my computer.
As posters above have stated ,vaping is referred to as e-cigarettes,and in my experience are wonderful.
I still get the odd cravings for a cigarette but instead I vape and that takes care of that.
anyway here are a couple of links to vids ,one is a girl explaining what it is
and the other is a review site with a guy reviewing various kits.
I go to various websites to buy what i need, and everyone is different so i cant recommend one product over the other.
