Veteran agitators flock to Occupy Wall Street

City's biggest unions, community groups queue up to join the fight as young amateurs using Facebook and Twitter make more waves than the pros.

The city's most experienced agitators—the labor and community groups that typically organize local marches, rallies and sit-ins—have been largely missing from the Occupy Wall Street protest that is in its 13th day at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan.

But that's about to change.

A loose coalition of labor and community groups said Thursday that they would join the protest next week. They are organizing a solidarity march scheduled for Wednesday that is expected to start at City Hall and finish a few blocks south at Zuccotti Park.

“It's a responsibility for the progressive organizations in town to show their support and connect Occupy Wall Street to some of the struggles that are real in the city today,” said Jon Kest, executive director of New York Communities for Change, which is helping to organize the march. “They're speaking about issues we're trying to speak about.”

Despite the common cause, the city's established left did not initially embrace the protest, which began Sept. 17 and has been made up mostly of young people angry about the widening income chasm in the country, the growing influence of money on politics and police brutality, among other issues.

But as the action nears the start of its third week, unions and community groups are eager to jump on board. They are motivated perhaps by a sense of solidarity and a desire to tap into its growing success, but undoubtedly by something else too—embarrassment that a group of young people using Twitter and Facebook have been able to draw attention to progressive causes in a way they haven't been able to in years.

The protestors have transformed the park into a village of sorts, complete with a community kitchen, a library, a concert stage, an arts and crafts center and a media hub. All of that has enabled them not just to sustain the action but to build momentum. And as celebrities like Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, Russell Simmons and Cornel West have joined in, the city's traditional activists have been forced to jump into the fray.

I,m one of those hippie TM meditators from the 1970's. I joined the world 30 years ago and went corporate. I,ve been a sculptor for the past two and very happy in poverty. I couldn't help thinking when I saw the videos about what Bun Fulford said (I think it was him, or else it was that guy that Alfred Webre interviewed who relays messages he says are from the Andromedan Council), that we are going to start seeing real news reported in the MSM since the White Dragons are winning.

I hate to fall for all those promises we've heard over the years that turned out to be false, but those vids are pretty remarkable, considering they were on MSNBC.

Every revolution needs a spark to light the flames.

What has been happening in the last couple of weeks is the gathering of tinder and kindling.

If I were to make a guess at what it could be: I think that either a police escort or private security guard for a member of the uber wealthy will seriously harm or kill an unarmed protester, and then not be charged with a crime for the blatant unprovoked attack caught on camera.

Tensions are rising by the day, and there are way too many guys with guns for there not to be a tragic outcome.

I sincerely hope that it will all be worth it in the end.

I told you the idea of Bush Cheney ws to drum up war, send our troops there propagandize the masses in rural undereducated areas, and sick their NEW nazi cops on the citizens while our heroes are overseas. I suggest very strongly that the cops stop taking steroids in the gyms they attend that makes them over aggressive and in ON mode at all times.
Drug testing for behavior modification drugs on the force SHOULD AND WILL BE MANDITORY.
It it messes with wrestlers, it certainly is messing with the cops under stress daily from "real crime" to which these protestors are NOT.

America our kids are being attacked for excercising their God given right not to take it up the gazoo. They were bought up on truth, and will not accept the lie or distraction of racism, or propaganda. They have God's light in their soul and they will not have their future continually hijacked by the rich.

I never put myself in that situation... and all the people SHOULD know better... but no... it is their own fault...
