AS a British steamer ploughed its way through the Persian Gulf near Oman in the summer of 1906,an enormous wheel of light appeared. The vast wheel, seemingley bigger than the ship itself, was revolving in the sky not far above the surface of the water at that point. Vivid shafts of light emmitted from the huge wheel and passed right through the steamer. But these beams fortunately did not interfere with the functioning of the boat in any way. Since 1760 seamen have recounted sightings of unidentified flying objects in the form of a wheel. The Persian Gulf sighting of 1906 was one of eleven recorded reports between 1848 and 1910. Like most of the sea accounts of mysterious luminous wheels, this one remarked on the eerie silence of the phenomenon. Also in common with most other such reports, nothing was said about humans or humanlike beings in the wheels, even though the ascent and descent of these objects were obviously controlled. Were such glowing wheels in the sky an early and less sophisticated form of flying saucer? Were they operated by beings from other planets who kept themselves hidden or were invisible? Were they just visions of mariners too long at sea? No one has found an answer.
