Faith in the healing properties of color has not been without precedent. Believed to have been taught the knowledge by extraterrestrials, ancient Egyptians treated patients with colored light. Indian philosophers held that color was as vital to one's well-being as air. Interestingly enough, many abductees also report modification or enhancement to some of their chakra centres after a Close Encounter of the 4th Kind.
A growing number of color therapists claim that a wide range of disorders can be cured by colored light and the right colors in food, clothing, and decor. Many believe the seven colors of the spectrum correspond to the seven chakras, or ridge points (energy centres), said to run along the spine. Although some color therapy notions are widely accepted - hospitals, for instance, decorate rooms in colors thought to be soothing and thus therapeutic - critics say it is dangerous to assert that patients can be cured just by correcting a "color imbalance." But color therapists stand by their claims and ascribe distinct healing powers to each of the spectrum's colors, as follows.
1 - Violet - Crown Chakra
Associated with the crown chakra, violet is said to influence the brain. Color therapists believe violet light can help relieve headaches, epilepsy, mental disorders, and meningitis.
2 - Indigo - Third Eye Chakra
Commonly associated with the brow, or third-eye chakra, which symbolises inspiration and creativity, indigo is often employed to treat hearing disorders and loss of smell, and is used as an aid to cataract sufferers.
3 - Blue - Throat Chakra
The throat chakra, often described as the centre for communication and its esoteric counterpart, the spirit and willpower, is represented by blue. This is also the area that is most modified or enhanced in some cases of alien abductions. Blue light is used to treat laryngitis, sore throat, goitre, and hoarseness.
4 - Green - Heart Chakra
Associated with the heart chakra, green is believed to exercise control over blood circulation. It is commonly used by color therapists to treat heart disease, high blood pressure, ulcers, cancer, neuralgia, and syphilis.
5 - Yellow - Solar Plexus or Navel Chakra
Represents the "lower mind" - the solar plexus chakra, which some practitioners substitute for the traditional navel chakra. Yellow is prescribed for stomach, liver problems and various skin diseases.
6 - Orange - Spleen Chakra
Its relationship with the spleen chakra makes orange light a popular choice for therapists, who believe it can relieve lethargy. It is also used to treat asthma, gallstones, bronchitis, emphysema, and cholera.
7 - Red - Root Chakra
Associated with the root chakra, which is said to regulate vitality and sex drive, red is used to treat anaemia and depression. Red is considered a powerful stimulant, and therapists warn against overuse.
