WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Tuesday accused agents of the Iranian government of being involved in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, with help from a purported member of a Mexican drug cartel.
Attorney General Eric Holder said the U.S. would hold Iran accountable.
Two people, including a member of Iran's special operations unit known as the Quds Force, were charged in New York federal court. Holder said the bomb plot was a flagrant violation of U.S. and international law.
"We will not let other countries use our soil as their battleground," Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, said at a press conference in Washington with Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller.
Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, was charged along with Gholam Shakuri, whom authorities said was a Quds Force member.
FBI Director Robert Mueller says many lives could have been lost in the plot to kill the ambassador with bombs in the U.S.
Holder said the U.S. government would be taking unspecified action against the Iranian government as early as Tuesday afternoon. Asked whether the plot was blessed by the top echelons of the Iranian government, Holder said the Justice Department was not making that accusation.
Arbabsiar unknowingly hired an informant from the Drug Enforcement Administration to carry out the plot, prosecutors said. Posing as a member of a Mexican drug cartel, the informant met with Arbabsiar several times in Mexico, authorities said. The price tag was $1.5 million and Arabsiar made a $100,000 down payment.
Bharara said no explosives were actually placed, and no one was in any danger.
Shakuri remains at large. Arbabsiar was arrested Sept. 29 at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. He was scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday. Prosecutors said he faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors said Arbabsiar has confessed to his participation in the murder plot.
President Barack Obama was first briefed on the plot in June, said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor.
"The disruption of this plot is a significant achievement by our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the president is enormously grateful for their exceptional work in this instance and countless others," Vietor said.Iran

I would like to add, That our Attorney General, Eric Holder can not be trusted! He has
lied under oath concerning the Fast and Furious gun running Operation! This could be a diversion to counter his own failings has our nations top cop!

There was a report on the new today that said that the US has stopped a plot from the Iranian government to asassinate a saudi ambassador on US soil. When I heard this i immediatly thought that this is a plot by the illuminati to start a war with Iran. I do not believe what the US gov is saying, I think its a set up. They probably want to start WWIII. I think they are doing this now because they are losing there grip on the people of the United States. I think the wall street protests are getting out of control for them and they want to start a war as a distraction. I dont believe its going to work though I think the people are waking up to fast. But I do believe that the illuminati is about to make there next move.

Deffinately looks like a possible set up, for another 'False Flag excuse to do someting to Iran interesting...

Great Quote from Preet Bharara Attorney for Manhatten ' We will not let other countries use our soil for a battleground '

A bit late for that With 100,000's of American troops stationed, and in combat on other peoples soil all over the world.
Most of these polititions even lower down the pecking order are living in a bubble !!!!!!!!!..... Or is it just PR crap !!
Although it could be psyops ? false flag ? One thing is for certain, I cannot see Iran being stupid enough to do anything on US soil !!
Unless TPTB are manipulating Iran to do something provocative to open up the bigger agenda in the scheme of things ie provoking war with Iran??
Anything is possible in these games of intrigue, corruption and power, and as usual we are pawns looking on........
But we are not blind to their antics any more !! .......Cheers Steve

This sounds like a build-up to go to war. A false flag like Iraq, let’s just see what type of proof they will be offering now to go to war again for the X time.

Or maybe they will try to go to war without any convincing or excuses. And then they will go and get some friendly countries to help them out, so they won’t look like the only tugs on the block. Sorry for saying this but it seems so obvious.

Peace to all, we have so much positive and constructive thing to do it seems.

My initial impression of this was, like most of you, another feeble attempt at personifying some third party (in this case Iran) as the aggressor and attempting to put something away towards an even bigger reason to do later whatever it is they have in mind. Obviously it never is quite as simple as going to war but what transpires as a result. The problem is, they are running out of time because the phantom weapons of mass destruction is still fresh in the minds of the general public and I doubt they can muster the same level of desire for "retribution" as they so masterfully did against Afghanistan and Iraq.

This sort of thing (e.g. plot to kill someone) is never enough to persuade the unsuspecting public so extrapolating from history we can expect something a bit more substantial to take place soon (if they think it's worth it). It is of course all orchestrated claptrap straight from the think tank's desk. I would say Joe Public has seen too many atrocities committed in his name in Iraq and Afghanistan to be persuaded by this. People are more submissive if the "evil" is directed towards them directly or their families. If it's in another country thousands of miles away or is removed from one's shores, it doesn't quite have the same effect.

Knowing this, they might be audacious enough to try something on the mainland US or UK again; but what? What haven't they done yet? It has to be something a bit original otherwise people won't buy it. Well I'm not going to give them any ideas but I wouldn't mind betting that they are working hard on it as we speak.

Yep! We all know something is coming. Similar demonstrations are now happening in Australia (Julia Gillard's govt has just passed the carbon tax "scam" despite most Australians wanting nothing to do with it - understandably) and the Australian Media are repeating the same drivel as other mainstream media in the US, ie that the protests are pointless & the protesters have no purpose etc.

Saw this on Reuters. Very interesting:

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/10/12/us-usa-security-iran-plot-idUKTRE79B50420111012

Reuters) - You couldn't make it up -- or could you?

U.S. allegations that an Iranian spy outfit attempted to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington in a convoluted plot involving a U.S. informant posing as a member of a Mexican drug cartel seem bizarre to say the least.

Still, Washington says the drama justifies new international sanctions against Iran and Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief insists that "somebody in Iran" must pay the price.

"The burden of proof and the amount of evidence in the case is overwhelming and clearly shows official Iranian responsibility for this," Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal said.

The potential consequences are dire in a tense region where the United States and Israel reserve the right to attack Iran to stop it acquiring a nuclear bomb, a goal Tehran disavows.

For starters, the row could throttle any slim chance of resuming negotiations to settle the nuclear dispute.

Saudi-Iranian acrimony has ratcheted up this year, especially since Saudi troops intervened to help Bahrain's Sunni rulers crush protests led by the island's Shi'ite majority and fomented, according to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, by Iran.

From across the Middle East's Arab-Persian and Sunni-Shi'ite faultlines, Riyadh also accuses Tehran of inciting unrest among minority Shi'ites in its own oil-rich Eastern Province, and has often urged the United States in the past to attack Iran, according to diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks.

The plot suspects are Iranian-American Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, arrested on September 29 in New York, and Gholam Shakuri, said to be a member of Quds Force, the covert, operational arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. He is thought to be in Iran.

U.S. evidence rests mainly on Arbabsiar's alleged confession that he had acted for men he thought were top Quds officials.

MOTIVE AND MEANS

Yet questions abound over the putative plot, not least the classic ones of motive and means. Many analysts are skeptical.

What could Iran hope to gain from an assassination that would have brought fierce retribution? Why try to recruit a hitman from a Mexican drug cartel instead of using its own?

On the other hand, why would the United States, even with a presidential election looming next year, go public with such accusations unless they were well founded, knowing the impact they could have on an already volatile Middle East?

"Killing the Saudi envoy in America has no benefit for Iran," said independent Iranian analyst Saeed Leylaz. "Why should Iran create hostility when the region is boiling?

Dismissing the "very amateur scenario" as out of character, he said: "Iran might have conducted some political adventurism like denying the Holocaust, but an assassination attempt, particularly in America, is so un-Iranian."

It would certainly be a departure for Iran, although it has assassinated its own dissidents abroad since the 1979 Islamic revolution, and it has used Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon and Shi'ite militias in Iraq to further its own aims.

Decision-making in Tehran is murky and factional rivalry is rife. But the idea that rogue Quds elements could concoct such a momentous plot seems a stretch. That Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would authorize it seems more so.

"The United States would not blame the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) without substantial evidence," argued U.S.-based global intelligence company Stratfor.

"However, this plot seems far-fetched considering the Iranian intelligence services' usual methods of operation and the fact that its ramifications would involved substantial political risk," it added.

Former CIA agent Robert Baer poured scorn on the reported Iranian conspiracy. "This stinks to holy hell," he told Britain's Guardian newspaper. "The Quds Force are very good. They don't sit down with people they don't know and make a plot. They use proxies and they are professional about it."

CONSEQUENCES UNCLEAR

How this lurid episode in the adversarial relationships between Iran, the United States and its Saudi ally will play out in a Middle East already in turmoil is not yet clear.

Iran's parliamentary speaker, Ali Larijani, said the "fabricated allegations" were a U.S. bid to divert attention from Arab uprisings that Iran says were inspired by its own Islamic revolution which toppled the U.S.-backed Shah in 1979.

Tehran has watched in glee as popular revolts have ousted U.S. allies in Egypt and Tunisia, even if Islam has not been the overt driving force behind the surge of Arab unrest - it may have more in common with Iran's own street protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009.

Iran, however, is disconcerted by the upheaval in Syria, its only solid Arab ally and overland link to Hezbollah.

The fall of President Bashar al-Assad would damage Iran's "resistance" axis and perhaps strengthen Saudi Arabia and Turkey, its main Sunni rivals for influence in the Middle East.

Major General Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force, is already on a U.S. sanctions list for allegedly supporting Assad's violent six-month-old crackdown on dissent.

Nevertheless, it seems doubtful that any of the protagonists would want to use the alleged Iranian plot as a pretext for all-out confrontation in a region the world depends on for oil.

Given that no one was hurt, Iran, the United States and Saudi Arabia may avert any violent fallout -- although Washington clearly intends to push for further international punishment of Iran for its defiance of U.S. policy.

"More U.S. sanctions will be about the limit of it," said Alastair Newton, a former senior British Foreign Office official and now senior political analyst for Japanese bank Nomura. "The U.S. case hardly looks solid, either, so let's wait and see."

U.S. officials have themselves acknowledged that the details of the plot smack of a Hollywood script, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton jesting: "Nobody could make that up, right?"

What a Whopper! U.S. Throws All the Demons in the Mix for the Mother Of All Anti-Iran Psy-Ops
October 12th, 2011 GREANVILLEPOST
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford

“The whole thing smells more like the FBI’s schemes to frame Black men in Miami and Newburgh, New York, for terroristic attacks that never did, or could, happen.”
LISTEN: http://traffic.libsyn.com/blackagendareport/20111012_gf_IranPlot.mp3
To foment hysteria against Iran, “the administration is cooking up an almost comically infernal witches brew just in time for Halloween.” So fantastic is the American story of an Iranian assassination scheme, one is tempted to laugh – except that the farce shows how eager the Obama administration is to create war scenarios out of thin air. It is a psychological operation of the absurd, one that only “the typical American” will believe.

Who said Barack Obama would bring sobriety and dignity to U.S. foreign policy? The president’s men, and Top Woman Hillary Clinton, have thrown every stereotypical demon of middle American nightmares into the psychological operations gumbo, to create a war hysteria against Iran. No reflexive terror button is left unpushed, no racial hysteria unexploited. Bubble, bubble, boil and trouble, the administration is cooking up an almost comically infernal witches brew just in time for Halloween.

What a confabulation! There’s the Mexican drug cartel hit men, the specter of a bomb exploding in a crowded, upscale Washington eatery, plus attacks on Israelis and, of course, in the background, the elite Quds unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. And if you believe the government story – well, that proves you are the typical America, and any idiot can keep you in a state of endless war.

How convenient this alleged plot is, to weave together the interests of the Mexican narco-regime, which is at war with some of its drug billionaires and in league with others, and a permanent lackey of the United States; Saudi Arabia, the most reactionary regime on the planet, where one family demonstrates its fitness to control the world’s largest oil reserves by building a skyscraper three times the height of the Empire State Building in the middle of a vast desert, and is also a collaborator with the United States in turning back the Arab Spring; and Israel, the uncontested champion violator of international law and United Nations resolutions, which maintains its supremacy in the Middle East and unique relationship to the United States by keeping the region permanently on the brink of Armageddon.

“It turns out that a Drug Enforcement Administration ‘confidential source’ came up with the bombing idea, and that the restaurant doesn’t even exist.”

All four players now claim Iran has all but declared war on virtually everybody by plotting to kill the Saudi Ambassador to the United States. But the whole thing smells more like the FBI’s schemes to frame Black men in Miami and Newburgh, New York, for terroristic attacks that never did, or could, happen.

Attorney General Eric Holder, the American entrapper-in-chief, says the Iranians wanted to pay $1.5 million to Mexican hit men to kill the ambassador, possibly by blowing up a DC restaurant where lots of congresspersons also dined. But it turns out that a Drug Enforcement Administration “confidential source” in Mexico was the guy the Iranians supposedly contacted for the hit, and that he came up with the bombing idea, and that the restaurant doesn’t even exist. A naturalized American who also kept his Iranian passport is now in custody. His alleged partner is an Iranian who, if you believe the U.S. government, was connected somehow to the Iranian Quds force. We are supposed to accept that this is how the Iranians make war against the western world.

Mexico says the plot was a threat to its national security, although it is not alleged that even one Mexican hit man was actually contacted. Israel – well, the Israelis are always trying to get the U.S. to attack Iran, so there’s nothing new, there. And the Saudis are pretending to be the injured party, even though they years ago promised the use of their airspace to Israel and the United States for the purpose of bombing Iran.

Iran calls the tale “a children’s story.” Which pretty much sums it up, except these American, Saudi, Mexican and Israeli children are vicious, straight out of Lord of the Flies.

The American People are a good people! Just like every other country in the world! (We have a few rotten apples at the top!)
I love America and what it stands for ( freedom)This Crazy little experiment called ( Jeffersonian Republic)

The deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. The answer was provided immediately. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.” (Benjamin Franklin)

Looks like Iran has been onto this for quite a while: This was July 2010

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the United States and Israel plan to attack two countries in the Middle East as part of a conspiracy to apply pressure on Iran.

"We have precise information that the Americans have devised a plot, according to which they seek to launch a psychological war on Iran," Ahmadinejad stated in an exclusive interview with Press TV on Monday.

"They plan to attack at least two countries in the region within the next three months," he added.

He said the US seeks to achieve two main objectives with the scheme.

"First of all, they want to hamper Iran's progress and development since they are opposed to our growth, and secondly they want to save the Zionist regime because it has reached a dead-end and the Zionists believe they can be saved through a military confrontation," Ahmadinejad explained.

He also advised US President Barack Obama not to follow the policies of George W. Bush.

In addition, he warned Russian officials to avoid playing into the hands of Washington because that would go against their national interests.

Commenting on the nuclear issue, Ahmadinejad said Iran will resume nuclear talks with the West in September, adding that Iran wants Turkey and Brazil to participate in the negotiations.

'Shameful defeat awaits US in 3rd war
Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri warns US against a new war in the Middle East.
A senior Iranian military official has described a third US war in the Middle East as another heavy defeat for the country in the region.

"The United States, which has already suffered two heavy, disgraceful defeats against Hezbollah and Hamas in the region, can start a new war with a third country to endure another defeat," Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri told Mehr News Agency on Sunday.

Jazayeri made the statements after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made mention of the possibility of an imminent US and Israeli war against two Middle Eastern states in the near future.

"They (Iran's enemies) have decided to attack two of the regional Arab states, which are our allies, with the help of the Zionist regime to create a fear of decision-making in Iran," IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying on Friday night.

Political analysts, however, believe Syria and Lebanon could be the two targets of Israel and the US in the region.

The Iranian top military official slammed recent remarks made by the Commander of US forces in Iraq, General Raymond Odierno, who had accused Tehran of training militant groups in Iraq with the aim of what he called destabilizing the volatile state.

"There's a very consistent threat from Iranian surrogates operating in Iraq," AFP quoted Odierno as saying in Baghdad in mid-July.

General Jazayeri reiterated Iran's support for the establishment of peace and security inside Iraq, citing Tehran's support for Baghdad as "strategic."

"The Islamic Republic's interests in Iraq are actually that of the Iraqi nation," he concluded.

Would be good to hear Iran's side of the story. All we've heard is that they deny it.
Sorry, this alleged assassination plot just doesn't "gel" with speeches made by the Iranian President. The man is for all intensive purposes, "peaceful".

It is worth watching Press TV. Irans own TV station http://www.presstv.ir/ Although the UK are trying to shut them down just now. Iran are well aware of false flag events targeted against them by the US and Israel http://www.presstv.ir/detail/220979.html
