The politically motivated actions of right-wing extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people in Norway last July, raising fears that copycat killers could strike
ASIO warns there are concerns extremist may generate a Norwegian style massacre here, David Jean writes.
It was an atrocity that stunned the world.
A gun-wielding psycho opening fire on a group of defenceless teenagers in an act of senseless violence and callous brutality.
Anders Breivik slaughtered 69 mostly teenagers on the Norwegian island of Utoya on July 22 this year.
They were among hundreds attending a camp of the Workers' Youth League, an arm of Norway's governing Labour Party.
Earlier that day Breivik had bombed government buildings in Oslo, killing eight people. His motives quickly became clear.
Breivik, a Christian and right-wing extremist, confessed to his "atrocious but necessary" actions. He said the purpose of the attack was to save Norway and Western Europe from a Muslim takeover, and that the Labour Party had to "pay the price" for "letting down Norway and the Norwegian people".
Fortunately no politically motivated attack of this kind has occurred in Australia.
But experts, including those from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, warn that it could.
In ASIO's annual report, tabled in Parliament this week, it warns that fascist groups and other nationalist extremist outfits are active in Australia and pose a threat to its citizens.
"There has been a persistent but small sub-culture of racist and nationalist extremists in Australia, forming groups, fragmenting, re-forming and often fighting amongst themselves," the report states.
"Over the past year, such extremists have been active in protesting against various Muslim interests.
"Local racist and nationalist extremists maintain links and draw inspiration from like-minded overseas extremists, and much of their rhetoric and activity is derivative, heavily influenced by developments overseas.
"At present, their main focus is propaganda and engendering support. However, there is always the possibility of a lone actor or autonomous group inspired by a nationalist or racist extremist ideology engaging in violence as a means of provoking a wider response."
Professor Clive Williams, of the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism at Macquarie University, believes it is the possibility of a Breivik-type "lone wolf" operating in Australia that should most concern authorities.
Prof Williams said right-wing extremist groups had been an issue in Australia for many years.
However, most of the harm they had caused until now was among themselves.
While groups such as the Patriotic Youth League and Blood and Honour were active during the Cronulla riots during 2005, none had spawned a tragedy such as the one that unfolded in Norway in July.
That didn't mean it couldn't happen in the future.
"The sort of thing that occurred in Norway was to some extent a resentment of immigrants," Prof Williams said. "I think in particular there are certainly people in Australia who resent Muslim immigration.
"There are certainly people like Breivik in Australia.
"It is a matter of really keeping an eye on people like that and taking pre-emptive action if it is necessary.
"But I certainly think there are people capable of that.
"You've only got to look at people like Martin Bryant, and (Julian) Knight in Melbourne. They weren't politically motivated, they were just nut cases.
"But there are plenty of right-wing nut cases around as well."
ASIO's annual report indicates it is keeping an eye on these groups and that it is determined to safeguard Australia against a right-wing terror attack.
But Prof Williams said it would only take one to slip through the net for a tragedy to occur.
"Breivik was quite calculated," he said.
"He planned that several years out.
"There are people like him around, unfortunately, and it is sometimes hard to pick up on them if they are operating on their own.
"The assumption is that lone wolf attackers are always going to be Muslim and that is, of course, wrong.
"It could also be a right-wing attacker."
Prof Williams said extreme right-wing groups in Australia were mostly small and fractious, with a history of turning on their own.
ASIO's report agrees.
It also states the existence of such groups has resulted in the emergence of an "anti-fascist" movement, led by "self-styled anarchists", which aims to "confront those it identifies as fascists".
"Where such confrontations have occurred, the `anti-fascists' have outnumbered the nationalist and racist extremists and police intervention has been required," it says.
It goes on to warn that: "While most issue-motivated groups act lawfully, there are some who do not.
"There is also a small minority who seek to use protests around a range of emotive issues to further their own (often unrelated) political agenda by provoking, inciting or engaging in violence.
"It is this fringe that is of concern to ASIO."
The report also reveals that the number of ASIO terrorist investigations has risen from about 100 in 2005 to almost 300 this year.

PS - You know they are 'Full-Of-It' when they bring out the latest 'Big Bad Wolf' Breivik, and throw in a couple of patsy's like former Australian Army officer cadet Julian Knight (Hoddle St Massacre) & Martin Bryant (Port Arthur Massacre) for good measure...
The 'Real Truth' behind this story is the Labor/Green Party have F'd/Up our Country so badly since 2007, to the point where the 'Sheeple' are actually starting to 'Wake Up' and are 'Angry' and if anyone disagrees with one of their Policies or their 'Carbon Tax SCAM' they are automatically labelled a 'Right Winger', Extremist & Denier..!
The Labor/Green party have just started the 'Financial Raping' of our Country and its Fearmongering Propaganda like the 'Story' above that they hope will keep the 'Sheeple' in check..!
One other thing if their is a Breivik-Style Event in Australia, it most probably will be yet another Govt. 'False Flag'..!
