FYI:

British defence minister Liam Fox has resigned facing calls for an investigation amid growing criticisms over his close relationship with his best man Adam Werritty.

“As I said in the House of Commons on Monday, I mistakenly allowed the distinction between my personal interests and my government activities to become blurred. The consequences of this have become clearer in recent days. I am very sorry for this,” said Fox in a letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Fox came under scrutiny after revelations were made about his meetings with Werrity at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) who was not a government employee and had not been subjected to security vetting.

Furthermore, Werritty accompanied Fox on an official ministerial visit to Sri Lanka which was funded by a corporate intelligence company and billionaires including Poju Zabludowicz, the chairman of pro-Israel lobby group Bicom.

The Daily Mail reported that Pargav Ltd, a not-for-profit company founded by Fox's self-styled adviser Werrity, received £147,000 in cash to pay for their first class air travel and top hotels.

Moreover, Werritty earned over £90,000 as chief executive of the Atlantic Bridge, a charity organization which was founded by Fox in 1997 but was dissolved when the Charity Commission announced that it was “promoting a political policy [that] is closely associated with the Conservative Party.”

Cameron, who had pledged to keep Fox in office until the results of a government inquiry are due to come out, praised him for his concerted measures that made Britain's armed forces “fully equipped to meet the challenges of the modern era.”

Nevertheless, Cameron refrained from making any comments on Fox's cuts to the MoD's budget and the compulsory redundancies incurred by the military staff.
