It had to go somewhere and it has been found heading east from Japan. This is a huge field of debris that is many times larger than the Hawaiian islands. And, it's laden with radiation. There is an interesting video at the link which I am unable to embed.

Interesting there is no aerial footage of the debris field. Guess they don't want ppl to know how bad it really is. Oh and where is the geiger counter to show everybody how radioactive it is. Maybe the dog ate it.

Speaking solely from the perspective of a diver, I would have to say this, and I can understand if you don't share my enthusiasm...

Imagine the ocean life that will build up around this floating mini continent! By this time the sea weed growth is completely carpeting the underside of the wreckage, and dangling into the water column. Schools of small fishies, blennies and the like, would have colonised the weeds. Schools of baitfish, of trevally and others would be moving in lazy spirals under these floating havens. Larger fish would be ghosting these, pelagic predators such as the mako and the oceanic blue shark. Certainly would be fascinating to dive on it!

No fear spin involved. The debris washed into the ocean and coupled by the contaminated water close to the nuclear plant and later the rains and the clouds of radiation that swept east......you get my point.

Contamination from 2011 Japan Tsunami - California Outlook and Ocean Observing Help

The tsunami waves that hit Japan swept all kinds human generated materials out to sea, and some of these float for long distances (especially plastics). Added to this layer of junk at the ocean surface now offshore Japan, are the radioactive particles dissolved in water used for cooling the nuclear facility and released into the ocean nearby through leaks (see Guardian story) and active pumping by plant workers (see Reuters story). Apparently, major amounts of radioactive water stopped entering the ocean as of April 12th, but small leaks have been reported as recently as late-June. At least 12,000 tons of pumped water and a large (but apparently unknown) amount of leaked water with varying concentrations of radioactive particles has begun circulating in the ocean near Japan. A monitoring program (MEXT) established stations in the ocean offshore Japan to detect radiation, most indicated decreases while some showed increases as of April 11th, but reports have not been made available since then. Ocean currents will carry the floating materials (including radioactive water) in different directions, but eventually (years) some of this material will cross the Pacific (See University of Hawaii story with animation). It is not clear if any radioactive materials will remain in the water by the time it reaches the U.S. west coast (forecast to be ~ 2 years), but certainly iodine will be gone by then. Until April 14th, NOAA satellites were tracking debris progress across the ocean, but the satellites resolution is not high enought to continue tracking since that time. Model forecasts show that some of the remote northwest Hawaiin Islands may receive some of this floating material within a year and the California coast within 2-3 years (see Mercury News article and animation on right column). The fate of the radioactive particles will depend on their half-lives, whether they tend to sink or float, how much currents disperse them and whether marine biota consume them.

My heart almost broke at the news of radioactive water going directly into the ocean. Fools! So many are so disconnected from the plight of our oceans, it's like it's out of sight, out of mind. The ocean has been seen as an infinite dumping ground when it's not. There are also multiple underwater sites where the Russians, Americans and others have simply dumped barrels and barrels of radioactive waste, or simply pumped it into the rivers and oceans.
