What is the difference between Essence and Consciousness?

From a Buddhist point of view, they like to break every thing down, take it apart, and see what is left, and then ask, “Does it exist?” Then there is the problem of using language to describe what is seen, or known.

On an ordinary level, consciousness is awareness.
We are conscious of some thing.
So that is the first point of duality.
Then we might ask,
“Am I not this consciousness?”
“Am I being aware?”
“Being... aware.”
The answer is yes!

You can see here how the breaking down of Being and Awareness works.

So what is Being?
At the subtlest level it has to be pure and untainted...in fact Empty of any fabrication.
It is before being happy, being an identity, being anything.
It is Empty of any idea of existing or not existing.

Essence is your purest element.
It is your Absolute truth.
It is like the white of this screen: it allows everything to manifest.

The manifestation is Consciousness, Relative truth.

If you ask, “Why did Consciousness manifest?” then here I would have to speculate.
One: Consciousness manifests to help all sentient beings realise their true Essence.
Two: Sentient beings, not noticing their true Essence, became Conscious of a self and other.
This was the birth of Ignorance!

The only way to experience this is through mediation. Meditation produces a flexible mind.
Below is a repeat of a thread written for the meditation group.

Obstacles to enlightenment...there aren't any! So what are these so-called obstacles to enlightenment?

Our Essence, our pure being, prisms into three aspects:
Emptiness, Consciousness and Compassion.

Can we be anything else?
How do obstacles occur?

Well, the three pure aspects of being Emptiness, Consciousness and Compassion became distorted, into three poisons – Ignorance, Desire and Aversion.

This is how it works:
If our empty essence does not recognise itself, this is ignorance.
If our consciousness gets attracted, this is desire.
If our compassion does not like what it sees, this is aversion.

The poisons or negative emotions do not actually exist!

From this distortion came the whole of our creation, which is maintained from moment to moment. This is not at all bad news, as we can use these disturbing emotions to find our way back to essence.

We can give Essence any name you wish, but Essence is beyond words or description. It is because we now know or get an inkling of essence, that we can now deal with the emotions in the correct way.

This is how Relative truth and Absolute truth work as a unity, each reflecting the other.
Remember: Relative truth is seeming reality, and Absolute truth is actual reality.

(Laughing...this is a technical description for the unshakeable basis of love...!)

Tony,
I can understand what your saying it makes sense.
So why do I find practice so hard,
I usually find something to distract me,
It's kind of irritating lol.
Cheers.
James.

Because it is worth it.
You only get resistance on worthy pursuits.

Hello James,
What you are feeling is normal...feeling stuck!
There many reasons for these occurrence.
I'll name a few, and you see if anything fits.
Firstly be happy you are noticing all those thoughts!
We are normally drowning in thoughts and reaction.

There could be too much expectation and you are trying too hard.
When reading what others 'claim' on the forum,
we may expect that we should be able to fly around with the gods...?

Meditation is very ordinary. It is becoming familiar with our natural state,
which could feel unfamiliar. Whatever arises in the mind are merely occurrences,
note them but do not follow them. Be aware of being aware, that is all.
Your centre is that awareness. You are not separate from that awareness.

You may want the meditation different to the way it is.
Everyones meditation will be different because our temperament and mind set.

Give yourself time to meditate, don't feel rushed.
In a twenty minute session we may get two minutes of actual meditation.
Most of us feel the meditation, when we stop!
So maybe there is an indication there that we try too hard.

Peace and joy will come with confidence in doing nothing.
We are so used to doing something!
Irritation is being angry that the meditation is not better.
The feeling of empty, could mean that it feel pointless.

We meditate to be clear about what is going on in the mind.
What is going on in the mind spewing out images and concepts from the past.
Our job is to be aware of this, and to not let it control us.

When you sit, maybe read something that feels right. Make it your quiet time.
Meditation is an undoing process, not a doing process.

Drop by drop everything will change.
The juice flows when you realise that change has taking place, and confidence will arises,
and the emotions are less in control.
Then you look out and see others who have not changes, that is when love and compassion arises.

The Buddha said, “not too tight and not too loose.”

Believe me, we are not going to lose irritation that easily!

Pie/Tony:

I would like to respond to this thread and intend to do so upon my return. I have chosen to attend the 13 crystal skulls ceremony at the serpent mound in southern Ohio, USA and must leave shortly. I am anticipating an interesting mini-vacation, perhaps maybe even learning something! Be well.

Thanks pie'n'eal,
breaking down the pleasant " hum" that arises from your threads, I found myself reflecting on the qualities needed to taste what you describe as the essence (honey)
