"The late Colonel Gaddafi's son and key right-hand man Saif al-Islam, has reportedly crossed the border from the Libyan desert into Niger. It's believed he's trying to negotiate a surrender to hand himself in, to the International Criminal Court. If he does eventually stand trial, he could yet spill some of the secrets of the regime's murky dealings, with the same governments that helped topple his father."

"The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) says they are in indirect negotiations with the fugitive son of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Talks are being held through intermediaries to assure Saif al-Islam Gaddafi that he would receive a fair trial, Luis Moreno-Ocampo told the Associated Press, without specifying the liaisons.

He said the ICC officials have promised Saif al-Islam that he could be helped to find a new country of residence if he were acquitted, or after serving a jail term.

Moreno-Ocampo said he was unaware of the 39-year-old Gaddafi's whereabouts.

The chief prosecutor, however, said he believed mercenaries are offering to find refuge for Seif al-Islam in an African country that has no cooperation with The Hague.

Earlier, Libya's National transitional Council said that Saif al-Islam was planning to surrender to the ICC to avoid the death penalty.

The UN Security Council authorized the court to investigate events in Libya in February.

The UNSC's action was necessary because Libya's despotic regime under Muammar Gaddafi did not recognize the court's jurisdiction and had not ratified its founding treaty.

In June, the International Criminal Court charged Saif al-Islam Gaddafi with crimes against humanity.

Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC was waiting for documentary evidence confirming the death of Muammar Gaddafi to formally close the case against him. "

Let's hop some muddy things will come up and splash the immaculate white collars of some politicians. It can help to raise the level of doubt on institutions, so needed for the leading regimes to fall down.

He must be mad to think that he would get a fair trial in the aggressor's court, when his father was summarily executed before any trial. Anyway, this news could easily be disinfo to shatter the morale of resistance.
