Don't know how they can predict something like this, but they are saying a Horror-Winter
begins in four weeks. I bought some nice skates last year, so bring it on!

:nhl_checking:

"January will see temperatures plummet and the month will be considerably colder
than normal. Central Europeans can expect to see temperatures to fall as low as -25°C."

Yes they were talking about that a while back, they said November/December would be bad in the UK....It effects me as I'm a postman and it was a right pain last year...

We are not used to snow in 'Sunny somerset' ..LOL Steve

"Bring it on"? :)
Easy for you to say! If the data below your picture are correct, you live in Northern Holland.
That's nowhere near Central Europe.
(OK, I am exaggerating - it is NEAR it. Sort of... from afar. : ))

I, on the other hand...
Oh well, meteorologists have been known to be wrong - quite often - before.... :-)

And, meagre consolation as it is, this would still not come close to the winter of 1929.
Now THAT was, truly, a horror winter in most of Europe.

Not sure the low income families, the elderly and the disabled will be feeling quite so positive about the prospect of trying to keep warm if the conditions are as bad as this says.
Here in the UK, utility companies have decided that it is OK to raise their prices by up to 19% - such a kind and thoughtful gesture. At least their shareholders will be able to use their profits to keep nice and cosy...

The gulf stream drift has apparently stopped since the gulf oil disaster. Also called atlantic converyor. This is an essential warm weather current that sweeps across europe and influences weather patterns towards warm and wet weather. Without this influence, we may well get some significant changes in weather patterns and those will definitely be cold. Easterly and northely winds will prevail more and bring arctic conditions to europe without the check against the atlantic converyor to warm things up.

It's from june 2011 and there are somefacts which do not match current state (sun). But hopping for the best.

i don't know about the rest of the world, but here in pennsylvania, it snowed today. for the first time on this date since, i believe, the civil war...... it's kind of funny, driving home from work, the snow is falling, very reminiscent of christmas, and i see trick or treaters going door to door..... lol....... what concerns me is that since it has snowed so early, the winter will be colder and have more snow than in previous years. there goes the heating bill and the electricity.
regards, corson

Right? So - what else is new? We had such temperatures last winter as well, it's not like it's something new or unusual. Granted, they seldom remain so low for too long, and the minumums are usually at night, but still - our building standards are made for this and winter tires are a normal part of any car owner's equipment. It would be more disastrous in the UK where houses have walls about 15 cm thick, and any sign of snow in London completely collapses the traffic.

on a sunnier note, least we don't have to worry about UV protection like our southern neighbours

Lord Sid,
"my uv protection looks like"
My friend, treat yourself to an upgrade with the stinger protection, though i hope it doesn't have such a psychiatric effect.

Spot on. The gulf oil spill was created deliberately.

TPTW want to create mayhem in every conceivable way to get rid of the most of us. We got to get rid of them by becoming self determined and bring harmony and balance to this planet, that's what I focus on.

I don't say I am looking forward to it, because it causes a lot of trouble too, indeed.
But being afraid in advance doesn't solve anything either.

So a snow storm hit New York on the same day I started this thread:

'It was like a bomb went off': Central Park left devastated
by snow storm with worst damage for 27 years as fears East Coast
blackout could last a WEEK'

I started reading about the oil spill and the effects on the warm weather current from the Gulf to Europe a year ago. Finally I ended up on this forum. They talked about the changes in weather patterns indeed. So it's gonna be a cold winter again, though I wouldn't choose the term "Horror Winter".

Snow attack in NYC is a "new" tactic to disperse and discurage OWS crowd... I bet it is not coincidence...

I am well aware that you can all search the web quite well on your own. :)
But still.... I thought I'd contribute two links about the 1929 winter - a text in German (http://home.arcor.de/wetter-wissen/Schnee/Extremwinter_1928_1929/body_extremwinter_1928_1929.html) and a video in Dutch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_aNPv7nrrQ). :-)

Also, a very interesting text (in English) about "peace" and "war" winters (http://climate-ocean.com/04_21-Dateien/04_21.html) - I would grade this article as MUST-READ for anyone interested in the topic (also excellent links) - and, finally, an article on record-setting weather (http://www.weatherexplained.com/Vol-1/Record-Setting-Weather.html).

I'll add more links if I find them.
