Helping hand ... Julia Gillard arrives at Nice Airport for the G20 summit in Cannes

JULIA Gillard has offered extra cash for the International Monetary Fund to help prop up the ailing European economy and prevent another global financial crisis.

The prime minister made the offer as she arrived in France in the middle of a worsening European financial crisis that is set to dominate the Group of 20 nations meeting this week.

Ms Gillard warned the moves by Greece to hold a referendum on the planned debt bailout has put the European crisis in "fast forward".

She said she would push for other countries to join Australia in boosting funding for the IMF as a global buffer.

"For Australia's part, we stand ready for an increase in IMF resources," Ms Gillard said after arriving in Cannes.

"That would be one thing that the G20 could do to boost the confidence of markets and show that there is sufficient resourcing to deal with anything else that may flow arising out of the European problems."

The prime minister urged European leaders to do more to resolve their debt problems and warned Australia would suffer if the fallout sparks another global financial crisis.

The Greek government's surprise decision to call a referendum on the bail out package agreed by European leaders last week has caused a shock across financial markets.

Financial turmoil would ripple across the globe and harm Australia if the European debt crisis is not solved soon, Ms Gillard warned.

"Now it is more important than ever that words become deeds. What Greece has announced has effectively put the European crisis on fast forward," she said.

The prime minister cut short her time in parliament this week to fly to the southern France resort town of Cannes to attend talks with other leaders of the G20.

The summit of the world's most powerful leaders will be dominated by Europe's financial woes, with US president Barack Obama and other non-European leaders urging the EU to step up efforts to resolve the crisis.

The leaders of France and Germany will meet Greek prime minister George Papandreou on Wednesday night (tomorrow morning Australian time) in a bid to salvage the plan ahead of the G20 summit.

Other major items on the agenda include restarting stalled free trade talks, food security and clean energy.

On her first day in Cannes, overnight Australian time, Ms Gillard gave a keynote speech to the B20 business forum that is running alongside the leaders' summit.

The business forum will today endorse a report calling for more consistent economic reforms across the G20. In a boost for Ms Gillard, the report backs carbon pricing schemes like her carbon tax as the best way to tackle climate change.

Ms Gillard also met Brazilian president Dilma Rouseff to discuss Australia's growing trade with the South American giant.

She plans further bilateral meetings with other leaders over the next two days.

Union leaders from across the globe also met in Cannes yesterday in a group called the L20 to push for job creation targets in each of the G20 countries.

An International Labour Organisation report warned of increased poverty and social problems because only half the 80 million jobs needed over the next two years are likely to be created in this time

Oppn calls on PM to detail IMF support

The federal opposition has called on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to say how much money Australia will provide to help fund a Eurozone bailout.

Ms Gillard, in the French resort city of Cannes for the G20 leaders summit, says Australia is prepared to boost its contribution to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to safeguard the global economy.

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says the coalition has no problem giving more funds to the IMF, but described the prime minister's announcement as 'astonishing'.

'The suggestion that we should be putting money into the IMF to bail out the Eurozone when not even the British are prepared to do so is extraordinary,' he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

'The prime minister needs to explain to the Australian people immediately how much money she wants to put into a bailout.'

Mr Hockey later told ABC Radio that the coalition had 'grave concerns' Australian taxpayers would be seen to be bailing out the largest economy in the world.

'We do have a problem giving the Europeans a get-out-of-jail-free card by offering them additional funds through the IMF when they need to resolve this issue themselves and fast.'

Ms Gillard was ignoring the fact that Australia was running a deficit and the government would have to increase borrowings to give more funds to the IMF, he said.

The most recent Treasury forecast has the budget heading to a $22.6 billion deficit in 2011/12 and a return to surplus in 2012/13.

'Therefore we will be borrowing money to lend to the Europeans who in turn will be lending to Greece,' Mr Hockey said.

This came via email last night.

This came from a Soldier’s wife. It says it all:

I sat, as did millions of other Australians, and watched as the government
Underwent a peaceful transition of power twelve months ago.
At first, I felt a swell of pride and patriotism while
Julia Gillard took her oath of office .
However, all that pride quickly vanished as I later watched 21 SAS Soldiers
In full dress uniform with rifles,
Fire a 21-gun salute to the Prime Minister.
It was then that I realized how far Australia's military had deteriorated..
Every one of them missed the bitch.

They keep selling off all our money-making Aussie companies (Telstra, Queensland Rail, Energex, just to name a few), Selling off all our land, while backstabbing farmers by telling htem they only sold them to "topside" of the land and allowing mining/gas companies to roll in and start fracture mining on the land, pushing to rip off the public by sending our money to this Carbon Tax fraud, where all the proceeds dont go back to helping the enviroment but to the likes of Goldman Sachs and co, AND NOW SHE WANTS TO GIVE THE IMF MONEY?

Where the hell is all this money coming from?

Oh thats right, straight from the normal everyday citizens like myself and the OP. Who, when this carbon tax comes in, wont be able to afford to pay our bills as we're trying to keep food on our tables, as they keep dumping these fees and **** on us, the price of everything keeps going up, but our paygrades stagnate and get smaller due to the greedy corporations cutting costs, then announcing record profits.

I am SICK OF THIS CRAP.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard defends IMF rescue package, claims it will not hurt Budget bottom line

http://content.video.news.com.au/NDM_CP_-_Sky_News/16/626/skynews_2821517.jpg

JULIA Gillard has defended her plan to stump up extra money for an international financial rescue package and insisted it would not harm her Budget bottom line.

The move came as Ms Gillard embarked on a sales pitch for Australia in front of the most powerful grouping of world leaders who have convened on the south of France to discuss global security and the risk of another financial crisis, the Courier-Mail reported.

The Prime Minister bragged about her Government's ability to avoid a recession in a meeting of business leaders ahead of the Group of 20 summit.

But she also warned Australia had a growing problem with areas of high unemployment and young people who were shunning work, as well as the risk of further manufacturing job losses.

Ms Gillard will today address the summit on her pet topic of jobs, calling for better international cooperation on creating jobs, government sources said.

She will urge other countries to study Australia's success in creating employment opportunities.

Hundreds of thousands of jobs were created in Australia since the onset of the global financial crisis, while millions of jobs were lost across the world over the same period, she will argue.

The first day of the G20 summit yesterday was dominated by the threat of a debt default by Greece that could spark a new global recession. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Greece could be turfed out of the eurozone if the debt-ridden country voted against the planned bailout package.

Greece is likely to fast-track its promised referendum on the bailout to December 4 or 5 after pressure from other European leaders.

Ms Gillard is pushing for a resources boost for the IMF to guard against debt defaults in Europe and has offered to help kickstart the top-up.

Opposition Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey yesterday warned the plan would push Australia further into debt.

He demanded Ms Gillard provide details about how much she planned to spend on bailing out European countries.

"The suggestion we should be putting money into the IMF to bail out the eurozone when not even the British are prepared to do so is extraordinary," Mr Hockey said.

But government sources said the plan would not hit the Budget bottom line because the money would be treated as an asset.
