Today I just opened a checking and savings account at my local credit union. I plan to move my money and direct deposits out of my current well known corporate mega bank. I would encourage everyone to do the same. They have all the same services of the banks including online services, except they are not for profit, and are instead a cooperative of members of the community.
I was explaining to the service rep who helped me open my accounts today that there is a movement this week to dump your bank and move money into credit unions and he said that, yes, they have had a large number of new accounts opened this week.
