View Full Version : 99% of Americans can only dream of...Michael Moore's stunning waterfront mansion

FYI:
"He is the booming voice of the Occupy protests, encouraging activists to continue their battle against the wealthy one per cent of Americans.

But it seems left-wing documentary maker Michael Moore has been uncharacteristically quiet about one thing: his own wealth.

While Moore has denied he is among the top-earners in the country, tax records show he owns an extensive property in one of the country’s most elite communities.

Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart posted the details Thursday, detailing Moore's large holiday home on Torch Lake, Michigan.

The documentary film maker owns the luxurious lakeside escape in addition to his pricey Manhattan residence.

The spacious 10,000 sq ft property is a far cry from the scene of tightly-packed tents near Wall Street in New York City.

The sprawling timber property has large bay windows, a number of small turrets, a private drive and decking that leads right to the water’s edge.

It is located on the southeastern shore of Torch Lake, regarded by locals as the ‘third most beautiful lake in the world’.

Moore's neighbours include Hollywood stars such as Bruce Willis, Madonna and Tim Allen.

He also shares the stunning views with corporate executives loathed by Occupy protestors, including ex-Chrysler Chairman Bob Eaton, according to The Michigan View.

Houses on the lake cost as much as $3million.

Moore originally bought the 2,500 sq ft home before expanding to two surrounding lots, according to local real estate sources.

Public records show the property in the name of Moore and his wife, Kathleen Glynn, and notes its taxable value at nearly $1 million.

Local real estate agents estimate the real value of the compound at $2 million, according to The Michigan View.

It places the property near the top one per cent of home values in the Forest Home Township and in the state of Michigan.

The township is roughly 98 per cent white residents, according to statistics from 2009.

I happen to live in the same area as Michael Moore. I would not consider it "one of the country’s most elite communities". Madonna doesn't live here- her father has a vineyard here. Bruce Willis did have a place in the area because he kids went to an Arts Academy nearby, but that was years ago. He may still have a place here, who knows, but this is not some elite community as the writer makes it out to be. We do live in a very beautiful part of the country. As for Michael Moore- I may not agree with everything he says- but he has created some good films and opened some people's eyes to various injustices. He has also contributed greatly to our community. A downtown theater that had been closed for years was beautifully restored- it is truly a community theater- once a year all movies are free for the entire week- and periodically throughout the year free movies are shown. Most are not the typical msm movies. There are many other interesting programs that are shown there as well. He also started the TC Film Festival and a separate Comedy Festival, which have been very successful and have done much to bolster our economy. Again, I don't agree with some of his views or statements, but just because the man has money isn't enough of a reason to criticize everything he does. Why do people think someone has to be poor to be genuine or care about the state of our country and world?

The reason I am on his case is that he correctly dissects a lot of issues, then comes up with the wrong cause and wrong solution.

Niobe - I am in agreement here. Michael Moore certainly helped me view the world in a different light. I think one should remember too that the Daily Mail is a right wing rag (IMHO of course):

Hacker: Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers: The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country; The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; The Financial Times is read by people who own the country; The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; And The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.
Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?
Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits.

Quote from the popular 1980's sitcom Yes, Prime Minister

Cheap smear from the Daily Mail (which is not a quality newspaper). It's a easy-target throw-tomatoes-at-a celebrity piece of column-filling gossip.

Of course Michael Moore has some assets - he's earned them. There's nothing wrong with that. It's called adding value to the world, and receiving value in return.

I agree. A part of this movement is to remove the control of wealth around the world and return the power back to the common people - we all deserve abundance, as abundance (in this case wealth) provides us with freedom, choice, opportunity, ease and grace. I am aware that money might not be around forever, but during this transitional period, it can be of great assistance in leveling out the playing field.

The intention destroyed money's reputation, not money itself. When I see people who are doing beautiful things and they have cash in their pockets, I see them as an example of balance - and in this case they wholeheartedly deserve their comforts. They are not the ones causing this corruption, but are using money as a tool to GIVE BACK to the people and you will be seeing more and more of this as the ones with money will step up to support new technologies, create benevolence projects and build new communities/opportunities and provide ways for this to birth.

So Mr. Moore, enjoy your home and cash - just stay on our side while doing so!! :) <3

Moore is one of the many that seeks the remedy through politics.
Politics is the cause, it can't be and won't be the solution.
It doesn't matter whether it is left or right, they sold their souls to the banksters, so they don't work for us.
WE are the solution, if only we would realise it.

Michael Moore has been helping to open eyes since the 70's when the Japanese started in on the auto industry. He showed how american big business could not care a bit about the people just profits. He exposed NAFTA for what it was, an agreement to export american jobs for profits. He is only human like each one of us but he stood up with valor to show us the crooks. Unfortunately it's taken a lot of us a few decades to see. IMHO

I'll wait to see Michael Moore's upcoming documentary exposing all the Wall Street thugs in the Obama administration, the same way he went after Bush's criminality, before posting any opinions on his motives and character.

He IS digging deeply into exposing that too, right?

I agree with Bill in a way, if I write a book on self help and spirituality that sells millions and in turn I make millions then I become evil because I made a profit? On the other hand if I sell a book that’s on snake oil and again I make millions, now I am a bestselling author. Just because someone makes money on a product they sell doesn’t make them instantly evil. We are the ones buying and using the product it may turn out to be snake oil, but we were not forced to use it!

I agree Lord Sid. I am familiar with Michael Moore and his NYC co-op and holdings. I agree he has every right to earn a high income and live as he wishes. It's when he goes on a rampage against, ie, "That evil company Halliburton" and then we discover he's a stockholder in that evil company, that I find him to be the ultimate hypocrite. Why would any one think that merely because he has shown up at the OWS site that he "identifies" and sympathizes with these protestors. If these protests impacted on his lifestyle, in the slightest, he'd be out of there in no time. This is Hollywood at its finest.

His "Farenheit 9/11" was a blistering attack on Halliburton. Here are some facts directly from Schedule D of his 1040 tax return:
Michael Moore owns more than 2,000 shares of Halliburton
He owns 2,000 shares of Boeing
He owns 1,000 shares of Sunoco
He owns 4,000 shares of Best Foods
He owns 3,000 shares of Eli Lily
He owns 8,000 shares of Bank One
He lives in an extremely expensive co-op in NYC and owns several other properties.

So this begs the question- can a man who lives very high honestly support opposition to that which he invests his money in? A book outlining this is called "Do As I Say, Not As I Do". For me, this sums it up very nicely.

Yes this is where the other shoe falls, I cannot say that it is him personally making those investments or an investor that works for him? either way at some point you have got to know what your money is supporting.

I think both sides are right here! He certainly opened the eyes of a lot of Italians and I'm sure that the unemployed people he talks about in the U.S. and who had been forgotten by most are grateful to him. Obviously he isn't perfect but he has certainly done a lot of good in my opinion.

My much beloved sister from another mother.
Thanks for that, that is exactly what I was speaking of.
I try as hard as possible to remain consistent in my words and actions and when I find something out of place, I try to fix it.
I am not perfect, so I have no expectations that anyone else should be, but I DO have expectations that someone promoting X actually believes what they are saying.
And I also have the expectation that if they promote X they will admit they believe in it because they are against Y.
Moore is intellectually dishonest and I don't like dishonesty.
I would lie, but only in an extreme situation, such as saving someones life.
Otherwise, I try as hard as I can not to.

Its a good idea to purchase shares of companies you hate, if it enables you to have some influence.
It will get you into shareholder's meetings too.

You wouldn't get a house that size in Vancouver for $2M. Houses are expensive here.

Michael Moore he has some good ideas and some bad ones. First, I thought he was working for the government - in order to make people think there was someone out there doing something (but then doing nothing or steering people in the wrong direction). But now I think he is probably a genuine person.

My issue with Mr. Moore is his incessant attacks on capitalism while making millions enjoying the benefits of capitalism. It smacks of pretty high minded hypocrisy. Like Al Gore telling us to drive smaller cars, live in huts, and make our carbon footprint smaller all while he has 8 or so 26000 sq foot homes, flies in his own private jet, and obviously doesn't believe he needs to adjust his carbon footprint. Where's Mr. Moore decrying the waste and extravagance against the Obama's needing to take two jets on vacation because one of them didn't want to wait for the other and fly in one jet? Where's the outrage at special relationships with corporations as with the Bush's and Halliburton say compared to Obama and Solyndra and a half dozen other crony corporations who donate big to him and let's not even get started on Union backing and getting government dollars which a portion goes back to Obama's causes and campaigns. It's politics, fraud, and deceit. Mr. Moore is a Liberal who touts liberal causes and anything socialist, but lives a grand lifestyle that he has garnered from our corrupt capitalist system he hates so much.

Ok, let's have them put a tax on all internet usage. Let's make it cost $5000.00 per year in extra taxes to use the internet and you have to have a global password and have some surveillance on your system so they can track all your thoughts or shut you down more easily, and now have Mr. Moore do some videos of the dangers of the internet and how bad it is thus setting up for this take over, and then find out he has a waiver, pays no taxes, has no password or surveillance on any of his systems. Better yet, he preaches for the taking away of all home pc's except for "educational" purposes that the state deems are worthy, and yet he has a free ride to do whatever he wants... maybe that will show an example of his hypocrisy. This is all hypothetical, but it does matter how he gained his wealth when the very system he is trying to destroy he is making millions off of. It reminds me of people immigrating to America to escape their homelands where they are not happy due to various things and they try to set up the very same system here. If you like it so much, go back your own country and live in the outcomes of such programs.... ie European socialism that is bankrupting Greece and other European nations.
