This just in from James Gilliland: smart street lamps that film us, record us and can even speak to us. Can you believe this? Makes one wonder if a certain agenda might not be moving full-speed ahead.

There is another thread about that illuminating idea:

Where exactly does it say in the source (http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/10/23/225836/) that it can record people's conversations?

Best we can say here is that smart people can do very stupid things. Wireless is DANGEROUS to growing children and should not be used anywhere near children (or near me either). Last time I looked the streets were dangerous enough for our children, without blanketing streets, schools and homes with unlimited wireless technology. Then there's the Orwellian worldview that this tech plays right into.

Didn't someone in that company ask 'what the heck are we doing here just to make a buck?'

They can see and hear everything you do. They can profile you like a fingerprint from your body movements. They used this tech. in Baghdad. They walled off half of the city with high cement barriers and collected everyone's body signatures. Anyone involved in the resistance was rounded up fairly quickly. Someone sitting in a room somewhere can follow you around town simply because there are red light cameras everywhere.

Go on ebay and search cell phone tracking and listening devices. GPS tags are the size of a thumb drive. Not only are the authorities using this stuff but random groups of vigilantes and sadists.

Well, since we are here to set the right example, it honestly bothers me that we are basing our assumptions on a forum post of an individual which based his/her opinion on an article which mentions none of the assumptions assumed...

There is a YT video about it:

And this is the company behind it :http://www.intellistreets.com/

They are not talking about recording people, but they are talking about an Image Sensor:

Perfect solution, very nice wolf.

Usually, the electrical taps are a made at the base.but then again, a good grinder should be double insulated. :-)

I came to the realisation about 2 weeks ago that Aus allready has this.

But i'd say they're the prototype version. Up the top of every street lamp, at the bit at the base of the thing with the actual bulb where it connects to the pole - There's a black dome.

Being friendly with teh security guards at my work im able to walk into the room and chat with them - and peek at all the tv's that are recording stuff going on outside. Was one that stood out - top down view at a pedestrian crossing. I pass under it on my way home/to work - so i looked up and realised the back dome was the camera.

On the walk home i looked up at every lamp post. They all have one.

So We've had this prototype version for a while, we just never knew.

Some locals here put one to good use on a revenue raising fixed speed trap, unfortunately they didn't back up and do it again when the council put it back up.

Didn't electrocute themselves though ;)
