Woman pepper-sprays fellow shoppers in Black Friday frenzy
Associated PressNovember 26, 2011, 9:23 am
A woman trying to improve her chance to buy cheap electronics at a Walmart in a wealthy suburb of the US spewed pepper spray on a crowd of shoppers and 20 people suffered minor injuries, police said on Friday.
The attack took place on Thursday shortly after doors opened for the sale at the Walmart in Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley.
The store had brought out a crate of discounted Xbox video game players, and a crowd had formed to wait for the unwrapping, when the woman began spraying people "in order to get an advantage," police Sgt. Jose Valle said.
"Faces were red," shopper John Lopez told ABC News Radio. "This one guy was coming up to my wife going, 'Call an ambulance! Call an ambulance!'"
Matthew Lopez, 18, told the Los Angeles Times he heard screaming and yelling.
"Moments later, my throat stung. I was coughing really bad and watering up," he said.
In the aftermath, video showed dozens of shoppers milling around while employees urge them to back up and make room.
It was the only major violence reported at a Southern California store involving Black Friday Thanksgiving holiday sales.
Ten people were slightly injured by the pepper spray and 10 others suffered minor bumps and bruises in the chaos, Valle said. They were treated at the scene.
"People could have gotten trampled," he said. "Good thing there were no small kids."
The woman got away in the confusion, but it was not immediately clear whether she got an Xbox, Valle said.
"Walmart is going through register receipts to see if it was purchased," he said.
The store remained open and those not affected by the pepper spray kept shopping.
"This was an unfortunate situation. We're glad everyone seems to be OK," Walmart said in a statement. "We're working with law enforcement to provide what information we have, such as surveillance video, to assist in their investigation."
The woman could face felony battery charges if she is found, Valle said.
See what I mean?
Was she being attacked?
Nope.
She used pepper spray to get cheap xbox games.
I hope they do find out who she is. She doesn't just face a few charges, she faces a STACK of them.
20 charges of assault with a weapon for a start.
This is the exact reason our world is screwed, idiots like this.
The world is in dire trouble, and the me, me, me brigade couldn't care less.

I'm not sure how I'd have acted in that situation, but I swear it would be HER mistake if she attacked me that way.... Maybe the videos will show her face, tracking her to her car and eventually, she'll be captured.
What I don't understand is how 20+ people allowed it to happen? No one saw anything going on? I mean, it's one thing to think we can't fight the govt, but one vicious be-atch armed with pepper spray can be easily de-armed and detained for the cops....

The effect of a shallow society that undermines the self at every turn so we must look outward for satisfaction, consume to satisy insecurity and self-loathing, be instructed to buy more with less disposable income, fluoridated water and 440 Hz music destroying the spirit while fostering compliance and unfocused aggression.
Pity the mind-controlled, they are the victims who pass on their pain to others, but at the same time, indivduals must be protected from their excesses.

I think that Campus cop might have started a trend, plus what a dumb thing to do, that offender was prolly a regular shopper at the store. I know there is a mad rush during sales but is it necessary to lower oneself to such a base level just to get a few cheap goods? There was some other guy who preordered a COD MW3 game, and when it hadnt; arrived, he threatened to burn the store down.
Is there any need for these types in a global community?

Snagged by the alluring thread title, I'm reading along and thinking it might be good to remind (as others have noted eloquently elsewhere on the forum) that this sort of social ambulance chasing just causes more social wrecks. I.e., judging this totally misguided woman for getting ensnared in the game while breaking an arm slapping oneself on the back for not being so dense (at least as THIS for c-o-l) just sticks her more firmly in place while ensuring you will walk blindly into similar malfeasance just because you noticed it.
Probably sounds like I'm posing superior myself, but not so. I just recently had my own eyes opened to how destructive judgment is, and how it just perpetuates whatever we focus on to judge. Far better to pray or otherwise ask the universe to help open 'that' person's eyes to real value and connection. To help 'THAT person OVER There' to feel connection, responsibility, caring, for the people around him/her. While we're doing that, we are BEING the caring person we want THAT person to be, aren't we? Just my 2c, here...

A sad commentary on the human condition.
There could have been people trampled to death.
What if some in the crowd had lung condtions or other serious breathing problems, it could have been fatal.

I agree totally about judgement.
The idea with the thread was that this is the sort of materialistic behaviour that is causing the whole system to keep going on.
Many people care only for themselves and will do anything to get what they want, at any cost.

Although this woman's behaviour was down-right stupid and dangerous (I agree with Sunnyrap though) I fail to see, if by "monsano" you mean "Monsanto, how this could compare with a corporation which in true psychopathic form is systematically ruining people's health and killing them in what can only be defined as genocide. And you're using the Illuminati argument that we, the 99% are useless and deserve what we get - maybe genocide? Are we going to work for them by spreading the word for them?

I really do take exception to things like this "99%" figure.
If there were 3 000 000 (THREE MILLION) Americans behaving like this, that would still be only 1% (ONE PERCENT).

I'm thinking that this is going to lead to more control. Shameful that people like her will be the excuse for more control. But honestly, aren't the stores partly for the blame? They're the ones with the limited supply of goods. What do they care about people as long as they buy the products. Consumerism is definitely our disease....

I completely agree Sid. It was actually a deeply-in-the-dark relative who told me about this and even they took pause to ask what kind of world this is.
I only wish I were so naïve that this could have come as a surprise. I sometimes look around the world and see how horrible a place it is to live in, and at times like these I wonder if people just haven't thoroughly earned this horrible world. I saw a programme about bankers by Ian Hislop (he actually dared speak about "probably the richest and most powerful banking family in the world... the Rothschilds") and he said that in the Victorian era, bankers at least appeared to funnel their money into charitable ends, but today such charity is seen as a bad thing because people are all out for themselves and that "maybe we get the bankers we deserve". I had to contend that he was quite possibly right.

FYI - update on this story:

Black Friday pepper spray suspect surrenders
LOS ANGELES - A woman suspected of showering Black Friday shoppers with pepper spray surrendered to authorities but was released pending further investigation after she refused to discuss the incident, police said Saturday.
The woman, whose name was not released, is suspected of firing pepper spray into a crowd in order to clear a path to a crate of Xbox video game players that were being unwrapped late Thanksgiving night at a Walmart in the upscale Porter Ranch section of the San Fernando Valley.
The suspect got away in the confusion, and it was not known if she bought one of the Xboxes. Ten people suffered minor injuries from the spray and 10 others sustained cuts and bruises in the ensuing chaos.
"Last night at 8:30 the suspect involved in the pepper spray incident at the Porter Ranch Walmart turned herself in," police Sgt. Jose Valle said Saturday. She immediately invoked her right against self-incrimination, however, and refused to discuss the incident further.
Police released her pending further investigation.
Valle said investigators still have nearly a dozen witnesses to interview, including several spraying victims. He added it would likely be at least two days before an arrest in the case could be made.
If the woman who surrendered is indeed the person who sprayed the crowd she could face battery charges.
The attack took place about 10:30 p.m., shortly after the Walmart opened its doors for the traditional Black Friday sales on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday that kick off the Christmas shopping season. A crowd of people had gathered to wait for store employees to unwrap the crate of discounted Xboxes.

Am I making it up or is it odd to not release a perps name. From the moment I read this story, to the comment I made earlier, I had a feeling about this person getting special treatment somehow. The fact that a name has not been released has my beard hairs tingling.
The fact that she was released, no arrest, no bail. Protesters get worse than this. I smell poo.

I wonder where people would even get the idea of using pepper spray so non-nonchalantly? After all - its not like we sit around watching COPS all evening stuffing our faces with potato chips and ding dongs. Here's my closing statement: When you suck really bad at something, a can of pepper spray may make your ego feel good for a moment - whether you're a cop or just a regular black Friday shopping loser ;) My 2 cents. And ego is the key word here -- we need to stop listening to it.
