A GIANT asteroid twice as tall as Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty is on 62 potential Earth-bound trajectories between 2023 and 2117, space agency NASA warned.

The nearest potential impact date with the asteroid, dubbed Asteroid 2018 LF16, falls on August 8, 2023. The asteroid could then cross paths with the Earth’s orbit again on August 3, 2024, and August 1, 2025. In total, there are 62 dates on which the space rock could hit the Earth, although the risk of this cataclysm happening is pretty low.

A consistent interpretation is provided for Neolithic Gobekli Tepe and Catalhoyuk as well as European Palaeolithic cave art. It appears they all display the same method for recording dates based on precession of the equinoxes, with animal symbols representing an ancient zodiac. The same constellations are used today in the West, although some of the zodiacal symbols are different. In particular, the Shaft Scene at Lascaux is found to have a similar meaning to the Vulture Stone at Gobekli Tepe. Both can be viewed as memorials of catastrophic encounters with the Taurid meteor stream, consistent with Clube and Napier's theory of coherent catastrophism. The date of the likely comet strike recorded at Lascaux is 15,150 BC to within 200 years, corresponding closely to the onset of a climate event recorded in a Greenland ice core. A survey of radiocarbon dates from Chauvet and other Palaeolithic caves is consistent with this zodiacal interpretation, with a very high level of statistical significance. Finally, the Lion Man of Hohlenstein-Stadel, circa 38,000 BC, is also consistent with this interpretation, indicating this knowledge is extremely ancient and was widespread.

Precise radial velocity work, responsible for the lion's share of exoplanet discovery pre-Kepler, remains a cornerstone of exoplanetary research and an essential component of validation and characterization of transiting planets such as those that will be discovered by TESS. It is an important tool for the discovery of long-period planets amenable to direct imaging, determining the architecture of exoplanetary systems, conducting a census of the planetary systems closest to the Sun, and the discovery of new transiting planets including temperate terrestrial planets amenable for atmospheric transmission spectroscopy.

This work will be performed by a new generation of extremely precise Doppler spectrographs. In the optical, they will have factors of a few better instrumental precision than the current generation and an order of magnitude below the amplitude of stellar noise ('jitter') in even the quietest stars, which moves the problem of sensitivity from the realm engineering to one of stellar astrophysics and astrostatistics. In the infrared, these instruments will probe new regimes, including terrestrial planets in the Habitable Zones of the coolest, closest stars to the Sun.

A team led by Southwest Research Institute has concluded that the surface of dwarf planet Ceres is rich in organic matter. Data from NASA's Dawn spacecraft indicate that Ceres's surface may contain several times the concentration of carbon than is present in the most carbon-rich, primitive meteorites found on Earth.

"Ceres is like a chemical factory," said SwRI's Dr. Simone Marchi, a principal scientist who was the lead author of research published in Nature Astronomy today. "Among inner solar system bodies, Ceres' has a unique mineralogy, which appears to contain up to 20 percent carbon by mass in its near surface. Our analysis shows that carbon-rich compounds are intimately mixed with products of rock-water interactions, such as clays."

They then interact with other electrons in the region to accelerate them to higher speeds or push them into Earth’s upper atmosphere. This video shows the data from Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science, the instrument aboard the Van Allen Probes that recorded the sounds. A range of frequencies are shown low to high along the vertical axis and the strength of the signal at each frequency and time are color coded — blue being weak and red being strong.

The spacecraft began its seven year journey by unfurling antennas and solar arrays, taking a few selfies and deploying a three metre magnetometer boom. China is set to land on the Dark Side of the Moon

China's Chang'e-4 probe decelerated and entered the lunar orbit this Wednesday 12 Dec 2018

the control center will adjust the probe's orbit around the moon and test the communication link between the probe and the relay satellite "Queqiao," which is operating in the halo orbit around the second Lagrangian (L2) point of the earth-moon system.

Afterward, the control center will choose a proper time to land the probe on the far side of the moon, according to CNSA.

International participation -

There are four scientific payloads on the Chang'e-4 mission developed by scientists from the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Saudi Arabia.

China's moon lander and rover for the Chang'e-4 lunar probe

The rover is a rectangular box with two foldable solar panels and six wheels. It is 1.5 meters long, 1 meter wide and 1.1 meters high.

Wu Weiren, the chief designer of China's lunar probe program, said the Chang'e-4 rover largely kept the shape and conditions of its predecessor, Yutu (Jade Rabbit), China's first lunar rover for the Chang'e-3 lunar probe in 2013.

Chang'e-4 lunar probe will land on the Aitken Basin of the lunar south pole region on the far side of the moon, which is a hot spot for scientific and space exploration.

December solstice 2018 arrives on December 21 at 22 23 UTC. High summer for the Southern Hemisphere. For the Northern Hemisphere, the return of more sunlight!

The winter solstice is when the Sun's rays are directly over the tropic of capricorn 23 1/2 degrees south of the equator. The solstice is when the Earth is tilted most away from the Sun on its axis. The winter solstice marks the longest night and shortest day in the northern hemisphere while in the southern hemisphere will have their longest day. The Sun stays below the north pole horizon during the winter solstice. This is the beginning of the winter in the northern hemisphere. Days will begin lengthening after winter solstice. That leads up to the summer solstice in June.

The winter solstice is different than the equinox.
The equinox is when the Sun's rays are directly over the equator. That happens twice a year when day and night are equal lengths.

Farout”, the Farthest Object Ever Seen in the Solar System
Astronomers have discovered a distant body that’s more than 100 times farther from the Sun than Earth is. Its provisional designation is 2018 VG18, but they’ve nicknamed the planet “Farout.” Farout is the most distant body ever observed in our Solar System, at 120 astronomical units (AU) away.

The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center announced Farout’s discovery on Monday, December 17th, 2018. This newly-discovered object is the result of a team of astronomers’ search for the elusive “Planet X” or “Planet 9,” a ninth major planet thought to exist at the furthest reaches of our Solar System, where its mass would shape the orbit of distant planets like Farout. The team hasn’t determined 2018 VG18’s orbit, so they don’t know if its orbit shows signs of influence from Planet X.

The Ursid meteor shower will peak in the early morning on Dec. 22, 2018, providing a shooting star show to skywatchers up before sunrise.

The Ursids, radiating from Ursa Minor, the Little Dipper. Meteors will appear to be streaming out from the radiant, but they can show up all across the sky.

In 2018, the peak of the Ursid shower on the morning of December 22 has to contend with harsh glare of the first December solstice full moon since 2010.

The best time to view the Ursids will be the predawn hours, when the full moon is not obtruding on the show. They may be active on December 23rd and 24th too.

Generally, the Ursids are a low-key affair, offering perhaps as many as 5-10 meteors per hour in a dark sky. In rare instances, bursts of 100 or more meteors per hour have been observed at times over the past century.

The Ursids are associated with comet 8P/Tuttle, which was discovered in 1790 and then re-discovered by Horace Tuttle in 1858. The Ursids occur when Earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left along the comet's orbit.

SETI Talks | Finding & Messaging ET: So What?

For more than four decades, astronomers have been searching for technosignatures: signals coming from distant technological civilizations. The first SETI searches began in the 1960s by searching for extraterrestrial radio waves and have more recently expanded to include optical (visible) signals, such as powerful laser pulses. We know that, like technological progress, the search is also accelerating, evolving with the development of new antenna arrays and new networks of telescopes which will soon be capable listening to the entire sky, everywhere, and all the time. It is impossible to know when we will get our first contact and what this message will say, but we know that this discovery will have an ethical and political impact on our world. And then what will happen next? Will the detection of ET be dangerous or beneficial for humankind? Will it change everything, including our place in the universe or will we simply continue our life knowing that ‘We are not alone’?

To discuss these points, we invited four SETI researchers: Julia DeMarines, Astrobiologist and Science Communicator at the UC Berkeley SETI Research Center, Doug Vakoch, President of METI, Eliot Gillum, director of LASER SETI and Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute.

The main character is named and modeled after Dr. J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer who aided in the government investigations. Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) plays Dr. Hynek, and Oscar-winner Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Contact) serves as an Executive Producer. The series premieres on January 8, 2019. David is also a Co-Producer on the horror film Eli, which Netflix will release in 2019 and an Associate Producer on Parallel, a sci-fi thriller from Bron Studios also set for a 2019 release.

In this episode, we discuss how David was able to get the show produced, his interest in the UFO topic, and his thoughts about the real-life UFO cases portrayed in the series. We also discuss how to balance the fiction with the facts while trying to entertain and represent real people and events as accurately as possible.

2018 was an exciting year for avid stargazers. In retrospective summary, it began with the Super Blood Moon and ended with the passing of Comet 46P/Wirtanen. The stargazing events in 2019 could be as wonderful as the last.

In January this year, a Super Blue Blood Moon rose across the sky, stunning stargazers around the world. Next year is set to be another year filled with astronomical events.

Super Blood Moon Eclipse
On January 20 and 21, a Super Blood Moon will rise across the winter skies.
This sees a Super Moon, Blood Moon and the January Wolf Moon all coincide to create the phenomenal event.

January’s full Moon is known as a Wolf Moon due to in Native American times, wolves would appear outside villages and howl in hunger at the Moon.
A Blood Moon is when the Moon takes a reddish hue, as it refracts light only in the red spectrum.

Venus and Jupiter Conjunction
The day after the Super Blood Wolf Moon, on January 22 a beautiful conjunction of two planets will take place. Venus and Jupiter will be just 2.4 degrees apart in the eastern sky during pre-dawn. There is another chance this could happen later in the year on November 24, when the planets may be even closer - just 1.4 degrees apart after sunset.

Blue Moon
Ther is a Blue Moon on May 2019. The May 18, full moon is a Blue Moon according to an older definition of the term. It’s a seasonal Blue Moon: the third of four full moons to occur in a single season. A Blue Moon by this definition only comes 7 times in 19 calendar years.

Total Solar Eclipse
In July, a rare total eclipse will take place. This total solar eclipse will be visible from small parts of Chile and Argentina just before sunset. Some regions in the Pacific and in South America, including locations in Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay will see a partial solar eclipse, if the weather permits.

Those in the areas it is visible can witness it on July 2, 2019, but remember to wear eye protection as the sun's rays can damage your eyes.

Black Moon Rising
There are many intriguing Moons, the Full Moon, the Supermoon, the Blue Moon, the Blood Moon, the Pink Moon and so many more. None, however, are as intriguing, or mysterious as the Black Moon. This rare Moon occurs just once every 32 months, and is set to rise on July 2019.

The Black Moon refers to the second New Moon within a month. And while the Moon itself will be pretty much invisible, it will, nonetheless, provide an incredible opportunity for stargazing since there will be a whole lot of darkness in the night sky.

Rare Transit of Mercury Across the Sun
Towards the end of the year on November 11, the last Transit of Mercury until 2032 will occur. This is where the disk of Mercury appears to cross the disk of the Sun as seen from Earth. It will be best seen from the eastern US, Central America and South America. This is an event that only happens 13 times per century and will next take place on November 13, 2032.

A Spectacular ‘Ring of Fire’ Eclipse
In December, a rare Annular Solar Eclipse will take place, known as a Ring of Fire eclipse. This event is when the Moon is a micro Moon, the furthest away from Earth it could possibly be - opposite to a supermoon.

This means that during the eclipse a ring appears around the Moon, as the Sun’s rays peek around the smaller Moon. As this is a solar eclipse, to observe it you will have to wear safety glasses or else risk damaging your eyes.

Saturn's rings are made of water ice, and it's been known for a while that various processes causes them to erode and rain down on the planet. New research hangs a number on the rate of that "ring rain" — from 400 to nearly 3,000 kilograms per second. This means that, if nothing resupplies them, Saturn's rings could disappear in as little as 100 million years.

Orion is the legendary great hunter of the Greek mythology.
It is one of the most recognizable star figures in the night sky, and one of the prettiest, too.

Lying on the celestial equator, Orion is an "equal opportunity" constellation, visible from all parts of the world except for the extreme polar regions.

Let Orion be your guide to some of the winter constellations (or summer, if you're south of the equator).

In the Southern Hemisphere, Orion appears inverted, and the belt and sword don't make much sense, so Southerners often call this group of stars "the Frying Pan."

Face south on a northern winter night (or north on a southern summer night) and you'll readily spot Orion about halfway up the sky. Look first for the slightly lopsided rectangle with reddish Betelgeuse in one corner and bluish Rigel in the opposite corner. Halfway in between are the three stars of Orion's belt.

These three stars point toward reddish Aldebaran in the constellation Taurus and the Pleiades star cluster beyond in one direction, and bluish Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, in the constellation Canis Major in the opposite direction.

A new scientific paper provides stunning affirmation of one of the most striking predictions of the Electric Universe/catastrophist hypothesis. In the first week of 2019, the Moon will pass between the Earth and Sun to stage a partial solar eclipse. if you are at the right spot on the globe, you can see the Moon taking a bite out of the solar disk.

This partial solar eclipse is visible from locations in north Pacific and northeast Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, Russia, and Alaska’s Aleution Islands.

According to Space and Telescope, people will see 20% of the sun covered from Beijing, 30% from Tokyo and 37% from Vladivostok, Russia.

The January 6, 2019 partial solar eclipse starts at sunrise in Asia, ... then travels eastward for roughly 4 1/4 hours, finally ending sunset at Alaska’s Aleution islands.

Paul’s father began his investigation with USAF as a skeptic, but by the time Blue Book ended, he was convinced some UFO cases posed a real mystery. The HISTORY series is not sticking strictly to the facts, but it is attempting to portray the people and events as accurately as possible. In this interview, we talk to Paul about the production of the new series, his father’s UFO work, and how he hopes the show will affect viewers and perceptions of the UFO phenomenon.

A neighbouring galaxy is hurtling towards the Milky Way on a collision course which could shift Earth outside the Goldilocks zone, making it too hot or too cold for life, scientists have warned.

New research led by astrophysicists at Durham University, predicts that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) could hit the Milky Way in two billion years’ time.

Although the collision will not directly impact the Solar System, it will trigger a secondary chain of events, dislodging other stars from their around our galaxy and increasing the chance of entering new gravitational fields which could change the orbit of planets.

Although the crash is a long way off, it could end life on Earth two billion years sooner than expected.

Most galaxies host supermassive black holes at their nuclei, each with millions or billions of solar-masses of material. There is thought to be a torus of dust and gas around the black holes, and an accreting disk that becomes very hot as material falls onto it, in turn heating the torus and circumnuclear gas and dust. Such an active galactic nucleus (AGN) radiates across the spectrum while the dust often blocks the innermost regions from view. Powerful bipolar jets of charged particles are often ejected as well. Radiation from the torus can be seen directly at infrared wavelengths and, when it scatters off the fast moving particles, at X-ray energies.

Using data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, citizen scientists have discovered a planet roughly twice the size of Earth located within its star's habitable zone, the range of orbital distances where liquid water may exist on the planet's surface. The new world, known as K2-288Bb, could be rocky or could be a gas-rich planet similar to Neptune. Its size is rare among exoplanets - planets beyond our solar system.

Located 226 light-years away in the constellation Taurus, the planet lies in a stellar system known as K2-288, which contains a pair of dim, cool M-type stars separated by about 5.1 billion miles (8.2 billion kilometers) - roughly six times the distance between Saturn and the Sun. The brighter star is about half as massive and large as the Sun, while its companion is about one-third the Sun's mass and size. The new planet, K2-288Bb, orbits the smaller, dimmer star every 31.3 days.

Estimated to be about 1.9 times Earth's size, K2-288Bb is half the size of Neptune. This places the planet within a recently discovered category called the Fulton gap, or radius gap. Among planets that orbit close to their stars, there's a curious dearth of worlds between about 1.5 and two times Earth's size. This is likely the result of intense starlight breaking up atmospheric molecules and eroding away the atmospheres of some planets over time, leaving behind two populations. Since K2-288Bb's radius places it in this gap, it may provide a case study of planetary evolution within this size range.

"It's a very exciting discovery due to how it was found, its temperate orbit and because planets of this size seem to be relatively uncommon," said Adina Feinstein, a University of Chicago graduate student who discussed the discovery on Monday, Jan. 7, at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle. She is also the lead author of a paper describing the new planet accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal.

Astronomers at the University of Warwick said this week they now have the first direct evidence that white dwarf stars – stars in an advanced stage of their evolution – ultimately solidify into crystals. That idea has been around for decades, but now new observations back it up. The astronomers who conducted this study say our skies must be filled with these crystal white dwarfs. They also point out that – long after it has swollen up as a red giant and swallowed the Earth – our sun is destined to become a crystal white dwarf, too, billions of years from now.

Astronomers Have Discovered A Record-Breaking Quasar With Brightness of 600 Trillion Suns

Hubble Space Telescope has discovered the brightest quasar ever seen in the early Universe. After 20 years of searching, astronomers have identified the ancient quasar with the help of strong gravitational lensing. This unique object provides an insight into the birth of galaxies when the Universe was less than a billion years old.

Quasars are the extremely bright nuclei of active galaxies. The powerful glow of a quasar is created by a supermassive black hole which is surrounded by an accretion disc. Gas falling toward the black hole releases incredible amounts of energy, which can be observed over all wavelengths.

The newly discovered quasar, catalogued as J043947.08+163415.7 [1], is no exception to this; its brightness is equivalent to about 600 trillion Suns and the supermassive black hole powering it is several hundred million times as massive as our Sun.

The results were presented at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society and will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Magnetars Near Black Holes Could Be Behind FRBs

A team of scientists have analyzed pulses of radio waves coming from a magnetar – a rotating, dense, dead star with a strong magnetic field – that is located near the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy. The new research provides clues that magnetars like this one, lying in close proximity to a black hole, could perhaps be linked to the source of fast radio bursts, or FRBs. FRBs are high-energy blasts that originate beyond our galaxy but whose exact nature is unknown.

The research, published October 24, 2018, in the peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal, looked at the magnetar named PSR J1745-2900, which is located in the Milky Way’s galactic center, using the largest of NASA’s Deep Space Network radio dishes in Australia. PSR J1745-2900 is the closest known pulsar to the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy, separated by a distance of only 0.3 light-years, and it is the only pulsar known to be gravitationally bound to the black hole and the environment around it.

The Moon Inside The Magnificent "Winter Circle Of Stars" This Week

The Winter Circle is an asterism appearing to be in the form of a hexagon with vertices at Rigel, Aldebaran, Capella, Pollux, Procyon, and Sirius. It is mostly upon the Northern Hemisphere's celestial sphere. On most locations on Earth (except the South Island of New Zealand and the south of Chile and Argentina and further south), this asterism is prominently in the sky from approximately December to March.

There is also a pattern within the Winter Circle. It's in the southeastern part of the humongous Winter Circle, and it's called the Winter Triangle.

The Winter Triangle consists of the stars Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse.
