We now have around 5000 satellites in orbit of the Earth and all of them are compelled to follow orbital paths dictated by Johannes Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion, first written down in the early 17th century. Could there be a way to hack the orbital physics and break away from Kepler's Laws? Today we'll explore a novel space technology called statites, and a twist on it we're calling quasites, that could very well do exactly this.

NASA will announce a major new science mission to explore our solar system during a broadcast of NASA Science Live at 4 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 27. The announcement will air on NASA Television, the agency's website, Facebook Live, YouTube, Periscope and USTREAM.

TESS Discovers Its Tiniest World To Date

NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered a world between the sizes of Mars and Earth orbiting a bright, cool, nearby star. The planet, called L 98-59b, marks the smallest found by TESS yet.

Two other worlds orbit the same star. While all three planets' sizes are known, further study with other telescopes will be needed to determine if they have atmospheres and, if so, which gases are present. The L 98-59 worlds nearly double the number of small exoplanets -- that is, planets beyond our solar system -- that have the best potential for this kind of follow-up.

L 98-59b is around 80 Earth's size and about 10 smaller than the previous record holder discovered by TESS. Its host star, L 98-59, is an M dwarf about one-third the mass of the Sun and lies about 35 light-years away in the southern constellation Volans. While L 98-59b is a record for TESS, even smaller planets have been discovered in data collected by NASA's Kepler satellite, including Kepler-37b, which is only 20 larger than the Moon.

The two other worlds in the system, L 98-59c and L 98-59d, are respectively around 1.4 and 1.6 times Earth's size. All three were discovered by TESS using transits, periodic dips in the star's brightness caused when each planet passes in front of it.

A team of scientists on Earth has made a surprising and perhaps very significant discovery on the Sun’s magnetic field. The scientists were utilizing a solar telescope to study the Sun’s corona, and through good fortune were able to observe and analyze an exceptionally powerful solar flare. The team focused on estimating the magnetic field strength of features called coronal loops, which are glowing arcs of electrified plasma. What they found is that the coronal loops’ magnetic field is 10 times stronger than solar physicists had previously thought.

However, the standard description of coronal loops as “building blocks of the sun’s magnetic corona” reveals enduring beliefs about the Sun, and its magnetism, that may demand reassessment. A Quick Look at Lensed Quasars

Astronomers have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to estimatehow fast some distant quasars are spinning.

Quasars are supermassive black holes that are rapidly ingesting matter from disks of material swirling around them.

The researchers took advantage of a natural phenomenon called a gravitational lens first predicted by Einstein to better study these quasars.

With just the right alignment, the bending of space-time by a massive object, such as a large galaxy, can magnify and produce multiple images of a distant object.

Astronomers were able to measure the spin rate by isolating the region that X-rays were coming from on these swirling disks.

They found that one of these disks was spinning around its black hole at 70% of the speed of light or more.

Knowing that these supermassive black holes were spinning so quickly billions of years ago tells scientists about how they grew and evolved in the early Universe.

A Tour of Lensed Quasars

Like whirlpools in the ocean, spinning black holes in space create a swirling torrent around them. However, black holes do not create eddies of wind or water. Rather, they generate disks of gas and dust heated to hundreds of millions of degrees that glow in X-ray light.

Using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and chance alignments across billions of light years, astronomers have deployed a new technique to measure the spin of five supermassive black holes. The matter in one of these cosmic vortices is swirling around its black hole at greater than about 70% of the speed of light.

The astronomers took advantage of a natural phenomenon called a gravitational lens. With just the right alignment, the bending of space-time by a massive object, such as a large galaxy, can magnify and produce multiple images of a distant object, as predicted by Einstein.

In this latest research, astronomers used Chandra and gravitational lensing to study six quasars, each consisting of a supermassive black hole rapidly consuming matter from a surrounding accretion disk. Gravitational lensing of the light from each of these quasars by an intervening galaxy has created multiple images of each quasar.

The key advance made by researchers in this study was that they took advantage of "microlensing," where individual stars in the intervening, lensing galaxy provided additional magnification of the light from the quasar. A higher magnification means a smaller region is producing the X-ray emission.

How can these black holes spin so quickly? The researchers think that these supermassive black holes likely grew by accumulating most of their material over billions of years from an accretion disk spinning with a similar orientation and direction of spin, rather than from random directions. Like a merry-go-round that keeps getting pushed in the same direction, the black holes kept picking up speed. This information helps astronomers learn more about how these supermassive black holes grew and evolved in the early Universe.

Solar Storm Forecast | A Blackstar During the Solar Minimum Low

This week, we are still riding the high of the total solar eclipse back on July 2nd as space weather picks up. Two bright regions have returned to Earth view (along with what looks to be a newly emerging sunspot in the southern hemisphere, likely from the upcoming cycle 25!) The returning bright regions are sandwiched by two coronal holes. The first has already rotated into the Earth-strike zone and is sending us a small pocket of fast solar wind. The disturbance has been extremely mild thus far and will likely bring only unsettled conditions and possibly some aurora at high latitudes. After we settle down over the next couple of days, the second coronal hole will bump activity back up around Tuesday of this next week. We could get another chance for storming and aurora at high latitudes, but only a minor chance of storming at mid-latitudes. Meanwhile, the bright regions are definitely decaying and are only boosting the solar flux slightly. This means amateur radio and emergency responders are still suffering with poor radio propagation on Earth's dayside. The only group, who should be loving life right now are GPS/GNSS users. The mild disturbance and low solar flux combine to help improve reception, especially at low latitudes so GPS users should enjoy decent reception all over. Catch up on some amazing views of our "Blackstar" during totality, see where aurora and noctilucent clouds were caught this past week, and learn what else our Sun has in store.

Exactly how fast is the universe expanding?

Scientists are still not completely sure, but a Princeton-led team of astrophysicists has used the neutron star merger detected in 2017 to come up with a more precise value for this figure, known as the Hubble constant. Their work appears in the current issue of the journal Nature Astronomy.

“The Hubble constant is one of the most fundamental pieces of information that describes the state of the universe in the past, present and future,” said Kenta Hotokezaka, the Lyman Spitzer, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellow in Princeton’s Department of Astrophysical Sciences. “So we’d like to know what its value is.”

ZTF Spots Asteroid With Shortest Year

Astronomers have spotted an unusual asteroid with the shortest "year" known for any asteroid. The rocky body, dubbed 2019 LF6, is about a kilometer in size and circles the sun roughly every 151 days. In its orbit, the asteroid swings out beyond Venus and, at times, comes closer in than Mercury, which circles the sun every 88 days. 2019 LF6 is one of only 20 known "Atira" asteroids, whose orbits fall entirely within Earth's.

Since 1977, a stately sycamore has greeted visitors to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. It looks like any other sycamore, one tree among many on the quiet, leafy campus in suburban Maryland.

But what many passersby may not realize as they stand under its dappled shade or admire its changing foliage is that this tree came from the moon.

The Goddard sycamore is one of the dozens of so-called “moon trees” scattered around the country, grown from seeds that traveled with astronaut Stuart Roosa on the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. Roosa was the command module pilot, which means that he remained in lunar orbit while commander Alan Shephard and lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell visited the surface of the moon.

28 random dips of light were observed by the Kepler space telescope of the star HD 139139. The random transiting nature of the objects and the light curves were studied by a team that was lead by Dr. Saul Rappaport and Dr. Andrew Vanderburg.

This bizarre star so far stands out from the Kepler mission. One explanation includes rapid sunspots. As hospitals well know, even the spaces meant to be most clean still teem with microbial life, and the International Space Station is no exception.

Astronauts have been cataloging the presence of microbes in space for a while now. They need to make sure their home in space is safe, and not growing colonies of harmful microbial critters. But in many other ways, the health and fertility of such microbes can teach researchers a lot about how living things — up to humans — respond to the harsh environment of outer space.

Solar Storm Forecast | New Hope for the Coming Cycle

This week our Sun gives us one more reason to believe Solar Cycle 25 is coming! Another new cycle sunspot, this time in the southern hemisphere has not only appeared in Earth view, but it has lingered! It even managed to fire off a couple of B-class flares before going quiet. This may be the first "real" activity that can be officially assigned to the upcoming Solar Cycle 25. In addition to this great news, we also have multiple coronal holes that have (or will be) rotating in through the Earth-strike zone this week. One of them sent strong enough fast wind our way to cause aurora clear down to Wyoming. The next burst of fast wind should hit around Monday into Tuesday. As for solar flux, its in the dumper and will continue to remain in the high 60s for the remainder of the week. This means radio propagation on Earth's dayside continues to be poor for emergency responders and amateur radio operators. However, the low solar flux and low solar activity means GPS reception on the dayside of Earth will continue to be great this week. The researchers are looking for signs of life endemic to the Moon, as well as organic compounds that are the basic building blocks of life. Of course, no lunar life was found in these samples, and we now know that the Moon does not harbor life. Nevertheless, these tests became the first time that NASA retrieved samples from another world to look for life on that world.

In 1972, it took an astronaut going on a spacewalk to do what Lynn Carter now can do with a few mouse clicks over lunch.
Carter, a planetary science professor at the Univerity of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, points to a small, framed photograph above her desk. It shows the Apollo 17 spacecraft, the last crewed mission to the moon, cruising high above the gray, cratered expanse below.
"See that little antenna sticking out there? That was the first planetary radar on a spacecraft, and while it went around the moon, it pinged the surface," she said. "Each time it hit a different rock layer, it reflected a signal and recorded it on film."

Cassini Explores Ring-like Formations Around Titan's Lakes

Using observations from the international Cassini spacecraft, scientists have explored the ring-like mounds that wrap around some of the pools found at the poles of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. The study reveals more about how these features formed.

The NASA/ESA/ASI Cassini-Huygens mission spent 13 years in the Saturnian system, with the Cassini spacecraft carrying ESA's Huygens probe, which landed on the icy moon in 2005. During Cassini's tour of Saturn and its moons, it made more than 100 flybys of Titan, revealing around 650 lakes and seas in the polar regions of Titan—300 of which are at least partially filled with a liquid mix of methane and ethane.

Russia successfully launches Spekra-RG, a dual space telescope designed to map the sky in X-rays. This mission, in collaboration with Germany’s eRosita System, marks Russia’s re-entry into space astronomy and promises to put them in the forefront of x-ray astronomy for quite some time.

On July 13th Spektr-RG was launched from a powerful Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 12:31 GMT and heralded Russia’s first major space telescope since the Soviet era.

Astronomers have devised ingenious methods for finding objects that were, as late as 2010, thought to be rare: Earth-size planets orbiting other stars. So far, more than 4,000 exoplanets of all sizes have been discovered, leading scientists to estimate that, in the Milky Way alone, there are 100 million habitable planets. And yet, despite the recent discoveries, one of the greatest goals of the scientific community remains elusive: an image of a habitable, Earth-like planet orbiting in another solar system. Capturing an image is the only way to confidently identify a small rocky planet among the thousands discovered and to study its atmosphere, assess its orbit, and determine whether it might be capable of supporting life. The conundrum for astronomers is that—unlike stars, superheated gases, and other bright objects—Earth-like planets are too dim to be seen by telescopes.

Sean Cahill was the Chief Master-at-Arms on the USS Princeton in 2004 during a multi-day UFO encounter. At the time, the Princeton was part of the Nimitz Carrier strike group. In November of 2004, the Nimitz Strike Group was conducting training exercises off the coast of San Diego when it picked up odd readings on radar. Eventually, an F-18 jet fighter was zeroed in to observe one of the objects and reported seeing a 40-foot long smooth, white object that looked like a TIC TAC. Later that day the object was caught on infrared video.

In this interview, Sean discusses his experience being on board when the sightings occurred. He also shares his sighting at the time. Sean also appeared on the History Channel’s Unidentified: Inside America’s UFO Investigation. Sean shares his experience on the show and what it was like working with Luis Elizondo, the former head of the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). AATIP investigated military UFO cases.

Discover how an X-ray telescope has revolutionized astronomy and our understanding of the Universe. A scientific and engineering marvel, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has spent two decades (so far) exploring the cosmos unlike any other telescope. What it has found will astound you.

On July 23, 1999, the Space Shuttle Columbia launched into space carrying the heaviest payload ever flown. In its cargo bay was the Chandra X-ray Observatory, a first-of-its-kind telescope that would open a new window into exploring the Universe.

Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, its older cousin, Chandra detects X-rays from space instead of the kind of light that humans can see. Only a handful of decades before, scientists didn’t know objects in space gave off X-rays. Because the Earth’s atmosphere absorbs this high-energy light, people had to wait until the dawn of the Space Age to realize that space is aglow in light that invisible to our eyes. Once known, a different kind of space race emerged.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory is the culmination of decades of collaboration between scientists and engineers, private and public institutions, the United States and those around the world. 50 years after the first Moon landing, humanity is getting ready to go back. Countries and companies are planning dozens of lunar missions—for research, for resources and even for tourism, which begs the question: who, if anyone, owns the Moon?

Who owns this? Is it America — the country that planted a flag on it?
Or this man — who has been selling plots of it for almost 40 years?
Or is it us — and anyone else who bought one and has the certificate to prove it?

Today many believe the Moon could be the next frontier for tourism, space exploration or even the mining of precious natural resources. Which means this question might be about to become a lot more important.

In 1969 an estimated 650m people watched as Neil Armstrong took his first step on the surface of the Moon. Five more landings followed. And then for almost 50 years no humans went back. That is about to change.

There are dozens of lunar missions planned over the next 20 years and some will carry crews. The first to land could be in 2024 when NASA hopes to send a crew to the lunar south pole — where it’s believed water may be frozen in craters. That crew may well include the first woman to land on the Moon.

After years of being left alone why is the Moon hot property once again? This book could have the answers — or at least the man who wrote it might.

The price of a space launch, the most expensive part of going to the Moon, has dropped substantially. In 1981 NASA paid almost $62,000 a kilo to launch the Space Shuttle. Last year SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy cost just under one and a half thousand dollars a kilo. That’s a real term drop by a factor of 40.

There’s another reason the Moon may be an attractive destination — its resources. One of which is vital for supporting life in space. But in the past few decades ice has been discovered in craters of the Moon’s poles. And there’s the potential of mineable treasure including highly valuable platinum-group minerals left over from asteroid impacts. And the very rare isotope helium-3 absorbed by the Moon’s surface from the sun and used in nuclear fusion to produce a clean source of energy.

There are plans to mine both. But Oliver isn’t convinced. As well as its resources the Moon can teach scientists more about the history of the solar system. And it could be a proving ground for further space exploration, for example for a manned mission to Mars. But ultimately the main driver for returning to the Moon is nationalism.

And this is where who owns what on the Moon really starts to matter. Which brings us back to this man. He’s Dennis Hope. In 1980 he claimed ownership of the Moon and started selling it off for around $25 an acre. He says it’s netted him millions. Apparently even three former US presidents have Moon plots from him. Vicky Jeong is a space lawyer. Yes that is a real job. We showed her our lunar certificate.

This is because of an agreement signed in 1967 called the Outer Space Treaty. As well as trying to avoid an arms race the treaty set out certain restrictions. But the Outer Space Treaty only prohibits ownership of the Moon itself. The legality of who owns resources found on the Moon like metals or water is left up to interpretation. So what if, say China and America, both want to mine the same bit of the Moon? To work out what could happen up here we have to look down there.

The Law of the Sea sets out which part of the deep ocean belongs to specific countries and which is shared by all humankind. For those areas it has strict criteria for how private companies can mine for their own gain. This includes respecting the environment and ensuring some of the proceeds go to help less-developed countries. But America has refused to ratify the Law of the Sea believing as with the Moon in “finders keepers”.

So even if there is a new Moon treaty, America is unlikely to sign up to it if it’s modelled on the Law of the Sea.

Just how much of a mess won’t be known until the first crater is mined or the first hotel is built. And it may be many moons until the question of who owns the Moon is finally resolved.

On July 23, 1999, the Space Shuttle Columbia blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center carrying the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In the two decades that have passed, Chandra's powerful and unique X-ray eyes have contributed to a revolution in our understanding of the cosmos.

To commemorate Chandra's 20th anniversary of science operations, a collection of new images representing the breadth of Chandra's exploration was released. These images demonstrate the variety of objects Chandra studies as well as how X-rays complement the data collected in other types of light.

Chandra is one of NASA's "Great Observatories" along with the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. It has the sharpest vision of any X-ray telescope ever built. Chandra is often used in conjunction with telescopes like Hubble and Spitzer that observe in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and with other high-energy missions like XMM-Newton and NASA's NuSTAR.

Chandra's discoveries have impacted virtually every aspect of astrophysics. For example, Chandra was involved in a direct proof of dark matter's existence. It has witnessed powerful eruptions from supermassive black holes. Astronomers have also used Chandra to map how the elements essential to life are spread from supernova explosions.

Many of the phenomena Chandra now investigates were not even known when the telescope was being developed and built after first being proposed to NASA in 1976. For example, astronomers now use Chandra to study the effects of dark energy, test the impact of stellar radiation on exoplanets, and observe the outcomes of gravitational wave events.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory was named in honor of the late Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Chandra X-ray Center controls science and flight operations from Cambridge, Mass. In 2018, NASA awarded a contract extension to continue operation and science support of Chandra through 2024, with the possibility of two three-year options.

Scientists Just Discovered Fresh Water Under the Ocean, and It’s HUGE

Scientists found a freshwater aquifer under the ocean. And get this — there's enough water to fill 1.1 billion Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Oceanographic teams have known for a while that there are pockets of fresh water below the seafloor. They would run into them occasionally when drilling offshore for oil but when geologists and geophysicists explored how big these pockets actually were, they were floored.

Two different marine electromagnetic methods were used to pulse the seafloor. One involved deploying ten broadband electromagnetic receivers onto the actual seafloor, and the other involved towing an antennae that was broadcasting a certain frequency behind a ship with electromagnetic receivers at four different depth levels.

Both of these techniques rely on the fact that salt water is a much better conductor of electromagnetic waves than fresh water, therefore allowing us to probe things we can't usually see...like the composition of the Earth below the seafloor.

While scientists believe the fresh water has probably been there a pretty long time, the team also believes that these undersea aquifers are being supplied with new freshwater from subterranean systems.

Rising and falling ocean tides provide alternating pressure to deep onshore sediments, acting a bit like an absorbent sponge, pulling underground water toward the ocean. This means that the hydrologic systems under the land, many of which we already use, might be connected to undersea aquifers in ways we didn’t previously know about. But can we actually use this water? Drink it even?

Several countries across the globe, like India, are already experiencing major water shortages, and while these newly discovered undersea aquifers could be an unexpected solution we still need to think about how we can access them, the need to desalinate them. and if we do what will the effects be.

Imagine that they were joined by a second crew just before they returned to Earth so the new development had permanent habitation.

That kind of permanent development is what Trump has in mind.

BRUCE MACCABEE spent his early year in Rutland, Vt. After high school he studied physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass (B.S. in physics) and then at The American University, Washington, DC (M.S. and Ph. D. in physics). In 1972 commenced his long career at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, presently headquartered at Dahlgren, Virginia. He has worked on optical data processing, generation of underwater sound with lasers and various aspects of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) using high power lasers. Bruce Maccabee has been active in UFO research since late 1960s when he joined the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) and was active in research and investigation for NICAP until its demise in 1980. He became a member of MUFON in 1975 and was subequently appointed to the position of state Director for Maryland, a position he still holds. In 1979 he was instrumental in establishing the Fund for UFO Research and was the chairman for the about 13 years. He presently serves on the National Board of the Fund.

His UFO research and investigations (which are completely unrelated to his Navy work) have included the Kenneth Arnold sighting (Jun 24, 1947), the McMinnville, Oregon (Trent) photos of 1950, the Gemini 11 astronaut photos of September, 1966, the New Zealand sightings of December, 1978, the Japan Airlines (JAL1628) sighting of November 1986, the numerous sightings of Ed Walters and others in Gulf Breeze, Florida, 1987 - 1988, the "red bubba" sightings,1990-1992 (including his own sighting in September, 1991), the Mexico City video of August, 1997, the Phoenix lights sightings of March 13, 1997 at 10 PM, the Mexican Air Force case of March, 2004, the Iran Jet Case of Sept. 1976 and many others. He has also done historical research and was the first to obtain the "flying disc file" of the FBI (the REAL X-Files!).

Dr. Maccabee is the author or coauthor of about three dozen technical articles and more than a hundred UFO articles over the last 25 years, including many which appeared in the MUFON Journal and MUFON Symposium proceedings. He wrote the last chapter of "The Gulf Breeze Sightings" by Edward and Frances Walters (Morrow, 1990). He wrote the UFO history chapter of the book "UFOs: Zeugen und Zeichen," published in Germany in 1995. He is co-author with Edward Walters of "UFOs Are Real, Here's The Proof," (Avon Books, 1997), he is the author of "The UFO/FBI Connection" (Llewellyn Books, May, 2000) and he is the author of novel, "Abduction in My Life," (November, 2000). He is listed in Who's Who in Technology Today and American Men and Women of Science an he has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows and documentaries.

Our Sun calms down this week as region 2745 rotates off the west limb and on to the backside. We are dealing with a slight enhancement due to some mildly fast solar wind that could bump us to active conditions over the next few days, but only at high latitudes. On a more exciting front, a returning set of coronal holes rotates into view, which could bump us to storm levels with some decent fast solar wind in about 10 days. This should give aurora photographers something to anticipate. Unfortunately, the bright regions that were sandwiched between these coronal holes have decayed severely. They will not boost the solar flux much, if at all, for amateur radio operators and emergency responders. This means radio propagation will remain poor on Earth's dayside for at least another week or (likely) more. At least the quiet Space Weather means GPS users can expect great reception on Earth's dayside and at low latitudes over the next week.

NASA’s TESS Mission Completes First Year of Survey, Turns to Northern Sky

NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered 21 planets outside our solar system and captured data on other interesting events occurring in the southern sky during its first year of science. TESS has now turned its attention to the Northern Hemisphere to complete the most comprehensive planet-hunting expedition ever undertaken.

TESS began hunting for exoplanets (or worlds orbiting distant stars) in the southern sky in July of 2018, while also collecting data on supernovae, black holes and other phenomena in its line of sight. Along with the planets TESS has discovered, the mission has identified over 850 candidate exoplanets that are waiting for confirmation by ground-based telescopes.

“The pace and productivity of TESS in its first year of operations has far exceeded our most optimistic hopes for the mission,” said George Ricker, TESS’s principal investigator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. “In addition to finding a diverse set of exoplanets, TESS has discovered a treasure trove of astrophysical phenomena, including thousands of violently variable stellar objects.”

Declassified Vietnam War files are showing researchers the unpredictable nature of the Sun and helping them work toward predicting the next big solar storm.

Traveling at the near-speed of light, energetic particles shooting out from the Sun can zip through space, smack into our planet’s atmosphere, and cause incredible disruptions. And one of the biggest impacts we know of happened during the tail end of the Vietnam War.

On this episode of Focal Point, we hear from Delores Knipp, a space weather scientist and former officer in the U.S. Air Force who uncovered a war mystery that is now connected to a major solar event. And Howard Singer, the chief scientist at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

In 1972, a solar flare, or solar storm, traveled at about 2,800 kilometers per second, which was seven times faster than the norm, and it carried tremendous magnetic field, and mass with it. A dozen sea mines exploded and everyone chalked it up to Vietnam warfare, but it was actually the solar flares. The bits of Sun slammed into the Earth’s magnetosphere within 15 hours and triggered the sea mines.

Three newly discovered exoplanets could help researchers redefine the shaky line between rocky and gaseous planets, according to new observations from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TESS, which marks its first year of operations this month, spotted the trio of planets some 73 light-years away from Earth. The exoplanets are of a type that does not exist in our solar system, being between the Earth and Neptune in size.

That makes the closely packed system, known as TOI-270, a good bet for answering long-standing questions about how such “super-Earths” or “mini-Neptunes” form. The system is within range of ground-based telescopes and soon-to-be-launched orbiting instruments such as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). “This will be one of the key systems for JWST to study,” says Michaël Gillon of the University of Liège in Belgium, who is following up on the TESS discovery.

Eric Nielsen | Brown Dwarfs: Failed Stars Or Overachieving Planets?

Eric Nielsen is a research scientist in the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. He obtained his PhD in astronomy at the University of Arizona, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the SETI Institute. His research interests include searches for exoplanets, brown dwarfs, and the demographics of giant planets. He has collaborated in a number of planet-hunting surveys, trying to directly image giant planets around young nearby stars, including the ongoing Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) using the Gemini-South Telescope in Chile. This work includes the discovery of 51 Eridani b, a planet two-and-a-half times more massive than Jupiter. Nielsen is working to apply lessons learned from these ground-based surveys to future space-based missions that will image planets similar to Jupiter and Earth found orbiting distant stars.

Giant planets can be up to 13 times the mass of Jupiter, while the least massive stars are about 80 times the mass of Jupiter. In between are objects called "brown dwarfs" – too massive to be called planets, but not massive enough to burn hydrogen and shine like stars. Since 1994, a few thousand brown dwarfs have been observed close to us in the galaxy. But, what are they? Are they more like half-pint cousins of stars, or more like overgrown planets? This lecture explains how we observe and study brown dwarfs and what we have learned about them. It describes clues to their nature from their composition and their evolution over time, and the insights they give us into how stars and planets are born.

As NASA prepares to return to the Moon by 2024 as part of its Artemis program, the agency is focusing its efforts on exploring the Moon’s polar regions. These are areas of the Moon which seem to have a lot of water mixed in with the regolith.

Some of these craters are permanently in shadow, and might still have large quantities of water, that’s accessible to human and robotic explorers. This is a critical resource, and the Moon might be just the place to help humanity as it pushes out to explore the rest of the Solar System.

But it might also be an illusion. We really won’t know until we look up close.

This case became to be known as the Rendlesham Forest Incident and is the most documented account in military history. We'll also discuss findings associated with the seven sets of coordinates deciphered from the pages of the Binary Code that Jim Penniston claims he received during the Rendlesham incident.
