The Habitable Exoplanet Hunting Project

We are looking for more observatories and amateur astronomers who might want to join the project.

The Habitable Exoplanet Hunting Project is a worldwide network of amateur astronomers searching for new potentially habitable exoplanets. The project is coordinating over 20 observatories located in 5 continents.

They are searching for habitable exoplanets around non-flare G, K and M-type stars located within 100 ly.

The stars being monitored already have known transiting exoplanets, but none of them are potentially habitable.

This project is monitoring each star 24/7 for several months. By doing so, they believe that the chances of finding an exoplanet increase for particular targets. Moreover, they are focusing on stars closer than 100 light years because, on the one hand, the closest habitable exoplanets will be the first destinations of interstellar missions and, on the other, because very few nearby habitable exoplanets around G and K-type stars have been discovered: only 2 of them.

The number of potentially habitable exoplanets that could be discovered is, in theory, around 25. This calculation was obtained by taking into account the number of non-flare stars within 100 light years and the percentage of them that should show transits in the habitable zone.

Each observatory observes the same star and, when the transit of a hypothetical habitable exoplanet becomes unlikely, we move to another star.

Within 100 light years, we only found 10 non-flare G, K and M-type stars with known transiting exoplanets not potentially habitable.

Big telescopes are not necessary, but CCD cameras with a resolution of at least 16 bits are advisable because we are searching for exoplanets that produce a change of brightness in the star of around 0.1%.

On June 13 NASA’s official tally of exoplanets—planets beyond our solar system—shot past 4,000. The master list includes alien worlds around both tiny neutron stars and swollen, dying suns, planets in the crowded center of our galaxy the Milky Way, and planets floating alone in the depths of interstellar space. One location is conspicuously missing, however: Alpha Centauri, the star system next door to our own. Because of a confounding set of circumstances, this intriguing target has remained a cipher—at least, until now.

Technology is improving, and the stars are aligning, literally, to betray Alpha Centauri’s secrets. “The level of interest in finding [potentially habitable worlds] is definitely increasing,” says astrophysicist Ruslan Belikov of NASA’s Ames Research Center.

Nikolai Kardashev 1932 – 2019

Nikolai Kardashev, who was one of the earliest, and most consequential, SETI practitioners, passed away on August 3. At a time when a search for extraterrestrial intelligence was more a thought experiment than one requiring actual hardware, clever physicists in the Soviet Union formulated many of the seminal ideas for this nascent discipline. Of these, Kardashev was among the best known.

Coming of age in the postwar era, Kardashev studied under Josef Shklovskii, the celebrated author of the first general treatise on how we might search for technologically capable beings in the cosmos. Shklovskii’s book was translated (and added to) by Carl Sagan, and became the inspiration for many in SETI after its 1966 publication in the West. His early exposure to the fundamental premises of SETI led Kardashev to turn his inventive mind to this new field, one that was open to big ideas.

Mutilation Of Livestock Attacks In The Province Of Buenos Aires

The cases in the southern part of the Province of Buenos Aires are of high impact on rural producers and workers, to the point that no one wants to work at night and many others quit their jobs for fear of knowing what it is. Economic damage is also beginning to be felt in these cases of mutilation.

There are no answers from the authorities or from veterinarians, much less from the agencies with jurisdiction in these cases, which are still shielded in old reports from the University of the Center, INTA de Balcarce and SENASA in 2002, which found the mouse guilty snout and local scavengers elements in an impressive change of eating habits and behaviors.

We may or may not believe in these considerations from public opinion, but the truth is that when one talks directly with producers, field veterinarians and rural workers, the culprit remains the mystery. We are not talking about aliens, but about the impossibility of finding the right answer to the facts and thus bring tranquility to the livestock sector.

In North America, the August Full Moon is called the Sturgeon Moon, Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

The Moon will officially become full on Aug. 15 at 8 29 a.m. EDT (12 29 UTC). The Full Moon is the phase when the Moon appears fully illuminated from Earth's perpective. This occurs when Earth is located directly between the Sun and the Moon.

The Full Moon rises in the east around sunset, climbs highest up for the night around midnight and sets in the west around sunrise.

It won't be the biggest Moon you've ever seen and it won't be blue or pink, but it might have a face and it might make you feel calm and centered.

How Close Are We to Mining in Space?

Asteroids hold untold riches when it comes to “untapped resources.” We are getting closer to harvesting materials from these celestial objects, but how close are we to mining asteroids?

Asteroids could become the intergalactic pit stops for exploring the universe. They have the potential to become cosmic gas stations, and even the building blocks for habitats on Mars.

Asteroids can be huge, and they're almost everywhere in space. Asteroid mining could yield materials like platinum, iron, nickel, and cobalt; rare minerals; water; and even elements that are impossible to form on Earth.

And while there are numerous kinds of valuable minerals on asteroids, the first and most important thing we need to do is learn how to extract water. Water is found in Carbonaceous asteroids, also known as C-type asteroids.

A water source in our planetary neighborhood could be a source of hydrogen and oxygen for rocket fuel and life support systems; a tool to shield us from radiation; and even a supply of drinking water for astronauts. The problem is that C-type asteroids are a bit tricky to find: the asteroids are incredibly dark. The good news is, all the sunlight they don't reflect gets absorbed, warms the asteroids up, and they glow in the infrared.

That's why NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing the Near-Earth Object Camera, or NEOCam, which, in addition to identifying potentially hazardous Near-Earth Objects, will be able to comb the infrared for evidence of C-type asteroids.

The probability of an Alien Invasion of Earth or Humanity in some form or other is currently not a calculable quantity. While Hollywood blockbuster films have used the concept for more than a half century as plot mechanisms, for whatever reason mainstream science has disassociated itself from the topic for the most part. In fact, many mainstream scientists use the so-called "Fermi's Paradox" to "debunk" the idea of alien existence as well as invasion. We show in this presentation that "Fermi's Paradox" is based on invalid and incorrect assumptions and has no scientific basis for describing alien development and population growth. While precisely knowing the probability of an alien invasion is currently beyond human capabilities using modern information about stellar evolution and exosolar planetary formation enables some bounds to be determined. The probability of an alien invasion is in fact a finite value but how big or how small is difficult to ascertain. Realizing that the probability is finite suggests that at a minimum some preparations or, at the very least, investigation should be conducted into what an invasion might look like, how we might respond from civil, military, political, and socioeconomic approaches, and what we should be doing now to prepare just in case. Each of these concepts will be discussed from a scientific methodology with appropriate calculations and simulations.

He is currently working on several advanced propulsion concepts, very large space telescopes, space-based beamed energy systems, high-energy lasers, and next generation space launch concepts. This Rare Lava Lake Is Hiding In An Ice Mountain

It turns out volcanoes with active lava lakes are very rare, but scientists added an 8th to the list.
Until recently, only seven volcanoes out of 1,500 active volcanoes worldwide were known to have lakes of bubbling lava, but in July 2019 scientists discovered an eighth. The most recent lava lake discovery is in a volcanic mountain called Mount Michael, and it’s located on one of the South Sandwich Islands roughly 1,000 miles from Antarctica.

The lake of lava in the Mount Michael volcano was discovered as a result of decades of satellite imagery, as no one has ever summited the volcanic mountain on account of the incredibly steep sides.

In the ‘90s and early 2000s, thermal anomalies were spotted on Mount Michael but the image quality was not advanced enough to make a certain conclusion. But from 2003 to 2018, various missions collected new, better data that allowed researchers to conclude the volcano was home to a lake of lava approximately 70 to 150 meters across, and potentially as hot as nearly 1,300 degrees celsius.

While Mount Michael is fairly remote, and doesn’t pose a threat to anyone, new lava lake discoveries offer the opportunity for further study and clues on how to avoid volcanic disasters in the future.

Potentially Habitable Super-Earth Found Orbiting A Nearby Star

An international group of astronomers discovered an Earth-like planet using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in the constellation Hydra, about 31 light-years from Earth.

The planet named GJ 357 d, is six times larger than Earth and It orbits a dwarf star with two other previously unknown planets. Located in the outer edge of its host star's "habitable zone," scientists believe that this super-Earth could have water on its surface.

Polaris designated α Ursae Minoris, commonly the North Star or Pole Star, is the brightest star in the constellation of Ursa Minor. It is very close to the north celestial pole, making it the current northern pole star. The revised Hipparcos parallax gives a distance to Polaris of about 433 light-years (133 parsecs).

Polaris is a triple star system, composed of the primary star, Polaris Aa (a yellow supergiant), in orbit with a smaller companion (Polaris Ab); the pair in orbit with Polaris B (discovered in August 1779 by William Herschel).

The reason Polaris is so important is because the axis of Earth is pointed almost directly at it. During the course of the night, Polaris does not rise or set, but remains in very nearly the same spot above the northern horizon year-round while the other stars circle around it.

So at any hour of the night, at any time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, you can readily find Polaris and it is always found in a due northerly direction. If you were at the North Pole, the North Star would be directly overhead.

Now, some organisms actually thrive in these unusual environments, which would raise the probability of life on Europa.
Actually, as early as 2023, NASA plans to send the Europa Clipper to study this moon through a series of flybys while in orbit around Jupiter, Which would drastically increase our knowledge of this mysterious world.
Furthermore, possible future missions to Europa would be to drill through the thick layer of ice and to discover what lives in its vast oceans.

There wasn’t much information about titan,

It also increased the possibility that unusual life forms with different chemistry than on earth could exist in its Methane lakes.
Fortunately, NASA’s Dragonfly mission sets to put a drone to explore Titan.
Predicted to reach Titan in 2034, Dragonfly will be flying around dozens of promising locations on Titan looking for prebiotic chemical processes common on both Titan and Earth.
Discovering life in this mysterious ocean world could revolutionize what we know about life in the universe.

Venus and Mars Spectacular Conjunction

Venus and Mars are about to have a spectacular conjunction. Don't bother looking, though. The two planets are right beside the sun. Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) are monitoring their convergence.

At closest approach on August 24th, Venus and Mars will be less than 1/2 degree apart. Human eyes won't be able to see the pair in the bright blue noontime sky, but SOHO can, using opaque disks to block the glare.

It’s perhaps one of the great unresolved yet overlooked mysteries facing academia and science — the extraordinary identities of planets in myth and tradition. Nothing in the familiar ideas about our history can explain the incredible patterns, found in extensive cross-cultural comparison, of words, phrases, imagery and storytelling describing a former age of gods and goddesses, of heroes and monsters.

In ancient myth, Mars is identified as a masculine, warrior-hero figure, a dragon slayer, the god of war. Does anything in Mars' appearance in our sky today explain this global pattern?

For decades, Ev Cochrane, a colleague of Dave Talbott and the late Dwardu Cardona, has investigated this question. Ev has authored four books, including Martian Metamorphoses: The Planet Mars in Ancient Myth & Religion. The study of exoplanets has matured considerably in the last ten years. During this time, the majority of the over 4000 exoplanets that are currently known to us were discovered. It was also during this time that the process has started to shift from the process of discovery to characterization. What’s more, next-generation instruments will allow for studies that will reveal a great deal about the surfaces and atmospheres of exoplanets.

This naturally raises the question: what would a sufficiently-advanced species see if they were studying our planet? Using multi-wavelength data of Earth, a team of Caltech scientists was able to construct a map of what Earth would look like to distant alien observers. Aside from addressing the itch of curiosity, this study could also help astronomers reconstruct the surface features of “Earth-like” exoplanets in the future.

But according to new research using computer modelling to explore the conditions that could exist on different types of exoplanets, there could be places out there where life absolutely thrives - even more than it does on Earth.

Location: A worksite near Middlemount, Queensland which is some 150kms NW of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. Middlemount is at latitude 22.81 degrees south, longitude 148.6 degrees east.

Dates: Sunday 28th and Monday 29th July 2019

Times: Both events commenced around 8.30am Eastern Standard Time.

Witnesses:

Witness 1: Male (L) from Townsville, who took video of the event and watched visually.

Witness 2: Male, a second worker from the mine site, who was the first person to notice the object on both days.

Other witnesses: Males. Workers at the mine site, whose voices are heard on the videos, via UHF radio link. None of whom we have been able to interview.

Summary of the events:

On Sunday 28 July 2019 while at work, at about 8.30 am (Eastern Standard Time) witness 1 was alerted to an airborne object by another employee on the work site (witness 2.) In the north-eastern sky witness 1 watched an object, white/grey in color for several minutes before it departed to the north, at great speed. The object was low to the visible horizon. There was no associated sound. It was lost to view over a mine mound.

What is a black hole?
A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that not even light is able to escape.
The gravity coming from a black hole is the result of matter being compressed into a tiny place.
Black holes are mainly divided into 3 types:
1. Firstly, Primordial black holes are the smallest type of black holes in the universe. Scientists believe this type of black hole is as small as a single atom but are as massive as a large mountain.
2. Secondly, Stellar black holes are the most common type of black holes in the universe. The mass of a stellar black hole can be up to 20 times greater than the mass of the sun and can fit inside a space of about 10 miles.
3. And finally, The largest type of black holes, Supermassive black holes are over a million times more massive than our sun and would fit inside a space about the size of the solar system. These supermassive black holes are found within large galaxies such as the Milky Way.
So, how do Black holes form?
Primordial black holes are thought to have formed in the early universe, soon after the big bang.
Stellar black holes form when the center of a very massive star collapses in upon itself. This collapse also causes a supernova that blasts part of the star into space.
Scientists think supermassive black holes formed at the same time as the galaxy they are in. The size of the supermassive black hole is related to the size and mass of the galaxy it is in.
Now, How do we know they exist?
The presence of a black hole can be inferred through its interaction with other matter and with electromagnetic radiation such as visible light. If there are other stars orbiting a black hole, their orbits can be used to determine the black hole's mass and location.

NASA invited engineers and architects from around the world to design future habitats for Mars. Here’s what they came up with.

NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge is a 4-year long competition centered around engineering habitats for deep space exploration, in this case Mars.

Mars has captivated our imagination for hundreds of years. The planet’s proximity and striking resemblance to Earth, and its potential to harbor life, has made Mars the target of many robotic missions.

But the surface of Mars is not as Earth-like as it might seem. With temperatures drastically changing each day, an inability to retain heat, and Mars’ total lack of a magnetosphere—there is almost no protection against dangerous solar radiation or cosmic radiation. This means we have to be able to build a futuristic habitat on Mars that can protect us from the extreme environment.

Enter: The brightest space architects and engineers from across the globe competing to prove they have what it takes to build a Martian home for humanity.

Two teams went head to head to print their designs and work out various complications, like what materials would work best on Mars (hint: thermoplastics), to prove they have what it takes to build humanity’s future home on Mars.

X-37B Military Space Plane Breaks Record on Latest Mystery Mission

The U.S. Air Force's X-37B space plane just broke its spaceflight-duration record.

At 6:43 a.m. EDT (1043 GMT) today (Aug. 26), the robotic X-37B sailed past the program mark of 717 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes, which was set by the previous mission, known as Orbital Test Vehicle 4 (OTV-4).

The current mission, OTV-5, began on Sept. 7, 2017, with a liftoff atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It's unclear what the space plane is doing up there now, or what it has done on past flights; X-37B missions are classified, and the Air Force therefore tends to speak of the vehicle and its activities in general terms.

There's a puzzling mystery going on in the universe. Measurements of the rate of cosmic expansion using different methods keep turning up disagreeing results. The situation has been called a "crisis."

The problem centers on what's known as the Hubble constant. Named for American astronomer Edwin Hubble, this unit describes how fast the universe is expanding at different distances from Earth. Using data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Planck satellite, scientists estimate the rate to be 46,200 mph per million light-years (or, using cosmologists' units, 67.4 kilometers/second per megaparsec). But calculations using pulsating stars called Cepheids suggest it is 50,400 mph per million light-years (73.4 km/s/Mpc).

As an astronomer he worked at Palomar Observatory as an asteroid hunter and was part of numerous programs such as the Planet Crossing Asteroid Survey – PCAS; the International Near-Earth Asteroid Survey - INAS; & the International Comet Halley Watch. During this time he made numerous named-discoveries, his first being Asteroid 4601 Ludkewycz. From there he moved on to managing JPL’s Planetary Image Facility & was on the imaging-science flight teams for such missions as Magellan at Venus & Voyager 2 at Neptune.

Deciding to also address his artistic interests he moved on to work in Hollywood doing both traditional animation and digital visual effects. Working at such famous Hollywood studios as Digital Domain & Walt Disney Studios Feature Animation, he was on Academy Award winning visual effects teams on such movies as “Titanic” & “Lord Of The Rings” and many others. His credits also include “Unbreakable”, “Disney’s 102 Dalmatians”, “Mission To Mars”, “Armageddon”, and Star Trek 9: Insurrection” & many others.

ExoMars – Protection for life on Mars

The ExoMars mission foresees Rosalind Franklin the rover and its surface platform Kazachok landing on the Red Planet in 2021. The rover will move across many types of terrain, collect samples with a 2 m-long drill and analyse them with instruments in its onboard laboratory.
This episode about ExoMars shows the integration of the locomotion system and the science payload to the rover in a specially designed, fit-for-purpose cleanroom at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, United Kingdom.
Mars is a primary target in the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life, past or present. There are stringent planetary protection requirements in place to make sure that ExoMars does not introduce terrestrial biological contamination to the Red Planet. ESA ensures planetary protection according to the legal obligations of the United Nations Outer Space Treaty.
Microbiological contamination is strictly controlled during the assembly of the rover. The cleanroom is amongst the cleanest places on Earth, cleaner than a standard hospital operating theatre thanks to filtered air, application of rigorous cleanliness procedures and workers who remain fully shrouded within ‘bunny suits’.
The rover spent 18 months at Stevenage before departing for Airbus Toulouse, France at the end of August, for four months of environmental testing to confirm it is ready for the conditions on Mars.

Mars will pass very close to the Sun in the sky as its orbit carries it around the far side of the solar system from the Earth.

At closest approach, Mars will appear at a separation of only 1°04' from the Sun, making it totally unobservable for several weeks while it is lost in the Sun's glare.

At around the same time, Mars will also be at its most distant from the Earth – receding to a distance of 2.67 AU – since the two planets will lie on opposite sides of the solar system.

The alignment of the Sun between Mars and Earth will disrupt radio transmissions between the two planets, therefore hindering communications.

A New Supermoon Is Coming this Week

Friday morning, August 30, 2019, at 6:37 AM EDT, will be the new Moon, when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from the Earth. The term "Supermoon" was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and refers to either a full or new Moon near perigee, when the Moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit. Since this New Moon occurs a little more than 5 hours before the perigee at 11:57 AM, this is a Supermoon. The closest New Supermoon of the year.

Although you can’t see a new moon supermoon, its impact can be seen along the ocean coastlines. The tidal influence of the extra-close new moon and the sun team up to usher in extra large spring tides, whereby the range between high and low tide is especially profound.

And while the Moon itself will be pretty much invisible, it will, nonetheless, provide an incredible opportunity for stargazing, since there will be a whole lot of darkness happening in the night sky.

Saturn, Jupiter, the bright star Antares, the Summer Triangle and the Milky Way gracing the night sky at this time of the year.

In this video, we discuss Mars polar ice caps. We begin by talking about what they are made up of, primarily being dry ice and water ice. Something unique about Mars is that Carbon dioxide can exist as both a gas and a solid on Mars, so we look at the science behind why that is. Then, we consider what is happening to the ice caps, and see that they sublimate (go from solid to gas) as the polar region heats up. So during the winter, the ice caps grow in size, and as spring and summer begin, the dry ice sublimates and leaves behind mostly water ice. This cycle plays a large role in the climate of Mars because a majority of the Martian atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide.

This process is very fascinating and tells us why the ice caps on Mars appear to change so much throughout a Martian year.

China's Lunar Rover Finds A 'Gel-Like' Strange Substance On The Far Side Of The Moon

Chinese lunar rover Yutu-2 has rolled over a strange mystery on the far side of the Moon. At the bottom of a small, recent impact crater, the rover found a shiny unknown substance the Chinese space agency described as a "gel with a mysterious lustre".

Although Chinese scientists have not yet revealed what it might be, the best guess from external scientists, according to Space.com, is that the material is glass that formed in the heat of the impact that left the crater.

An Interplanetary Internet Using Planetary Atmospheres

Planets, like the Earth, could potentially serve as giant telescopes - as explored in our last video (https://youtu.be/jgOTZe07eHA). This happens because the atmosphere refracts light and so bends it into a focus, like a huge spherical lens. Parabolic dishes on Earth can be sued as both telescopes and antennae, and so in the same way - could planets be used as antennae? Today we explore the possibility of using the Jupiter as a giant antennae, perhaps serving as the basis for an interplanetary internet, and how Juno could very well test the idea today.

A Volcano-Covered Exomoon May Circle A Planet 550 Light-Years Away

A volcano-covered exomoon could orbit a giant planet located 550 light-years from Earth, astronomers said.

Though scientists have discovered nearly 4,000 exoplanets, researchers have yet to confirm the existence of an exomoon, or a moon that's orbiting a planet outside of our solar system. In October 2018, a study suggested that the planet Kepler-1625b, which is 8,000 light-years away, might have its very own moon — but that has yet to be confirmed.

Now, a new study suggests that a moon could exist much closer to Earth, a mere 550 light-years away, orbiting a gas giant planet called WASP 49-b. And this moon is definitely not boring, as it might be covered with lava-spewing volcanoes.

Chandrayaan 2 was a highly ambitious mission for ISRO, and while the orbiter is working the lander failed during the last few moments before touch down. Based on the handful of public statements, and images from mission control it looks like braking from orbital velocity worked correctly, but the transition to fine control for descent may have resulted in a tumbling spacecraft which impacted the surface at about 100m/sec. However I hope more information comes along soon.

The next full Moon will be early Saturday morning, Sept. 14, 2019. The Moon will appear full for about three days centered around this time, from Thursday night through Sunday morning.

This full moon is also being called a micro-moon or mini-moon because it’s the farthest (and therefore the smallest) full moon of the year. This full moon comes one fortnight (approximately two weeks) after the new moon supermoon on August 30, 2019, and one fortnight before the new moon supermoon of September 28, 2019.

As the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox (the end of summer and start of fall), this is the Harvest Moon.

During the harvest season farmers sometimes need to work late into the night by the light of the Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the northern U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe.

German Government Knows Nothing About UFO Revelations In The US

The German government is apparently completely clueless about the recent UFO revelations in the USA. In addition, the Defense Ministry affirms that neither the Navy nor the Air Force have ever observed UFOs.
Background: In December 2017, the New York Times and the Washington Post reported that the Pentagon had been conducting a secret UFO research project called "AATIP" (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program) for years, spending millions of dollars in tax money. Since then, there have been ongoing revelations about UFO incidents involving the US military. The U.S. Navy recently announced new guidelines for reporting UFO sightings. The Washington Post titled: "UFOs are real and everyone needs to adjust to this fact".
In Europe too, the UFO phenomenon is taken seriously by the military in many countries, such as Italy, Spain, France and the UK. However, German authorities have been claiming for decades that they are neither interested in the phenomenon nor have any UFO files in their archives.
On 18 August 2019, journalists Dirk Pohlmann and Robert Fleischer of ExoMagazin.tv used the Federal Government's Open Day to ask government spokespersons about German UFO files at the Federal Press Conference, which was only open to the public on this day.
It turned out that the German government is apparently completely unaware of the latest UFO revelations in the USA. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert: "(I) would very much like to see the Washington Post article describing UFOs as a reality. The Washington Post. Well, I'd be surprised."
The spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Defense Tilman von Plüskow confirmed the official position held for decades that UFOs are not an issue for the Bundeswehr: "As far as I know, we're not dealing with UFO research in the Department of Defense." When asked about the existence of German UFO files, he replied: "I don't know all the files of the ministry. I can't answer that." In contrast to at least 20 countries worldwide, the German military allegedly never had an encounter with UFOs. Von Plüskow: "I am not aware that the Navy or the Luftwaffe has ever seen UFOs."
It should be noted that a similar question had already been asked by Robert Fleischer at the Federal Press Conference in 2015. The reactions at that time had been similarly "cheerful".

Dr. Kimberly Ennico Smith is a NASA research astrophysicist at Ames Research Center. She is multidisciplinary in her approach to space instruments, telescopes, and mission concepts. She has designed and built infrared airborne and space telescope cameras and spectrometers, tested detectors in laboratories and particle accelerators, designed low-cost suborbital instruments and built lunar payloads. Most recently, she served as deputy Project Scientist leading the calibration of the New Horizons Pluto fly-by mission and Project Scientist for the flying infrared observatory SOFIA.

Studies of our universe through multi-wavelength “eyes”, enabled by placing telescopes on mountain tops, on airplanes, on balloons, to rockets and satellites in orbit, has revealed a beautiful, mystifying, dynamic, and rather extraordinary place.

Our Earth’s atmosphere no longer became a limiting filter to our observing the light emitted, absorbed, and reflected from the universe in which we live.

Infrared light, in particular, by penetrating deep into dark clouds allows us to capture the birth of stars. Through sensing colder temperatures, we use infrared light to measure the re-emission of the dust left behind by violent supernovae stellar deaths. The infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum is also home to a rich set of atomic, ionic, and molecular transitions, allowing for in-depth studies of the makeup of and environments of the gas and dust from which stars and planets form.

This talk takes us on a local tour of our Milky Way and highlights recent observations by our many “infrared eyes on the sky.”

Remember the spectacle of that gigantic telescope unveiled in a mountain-ringed valley in China just a few years ago? Well, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has now picked up a mysterious space signal known as a fast radio burst.

Fast radio bursts or FRBs are brief but powerful pulses of energy from distant parts of the cosmos. The first one was spotted in 2007, and we're finding more of them all the time.

While astronomers have recently made some exciting progress in tracing FRBs, we just don't know exactly what these signals are, or how they originate. They might be caused by black holes or neutron stars called magnetars, perhaps.

The objects were found with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, or CHIME. This unusual-looking radio telescope, about the size of a football field, consists of four metal mesh cylinders — like skateboard half-pipes — that collect and focus incoming radio waves. CHIME is in a sparsely populated, mountainous region of British Columbia about 30 miles north of the U.S. border.

Light curves from the 4-year Kepler exoplanet hunting mission have been searched for transits by NASA's Kepler team and others, but there are still important discoveries to be made. We have searched the light curves of 400 Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) to find transit signals down to signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ~ 6, which is under the limit of S/N ~ 7.1 that has been commonly adopted as a strict threshold to distinguish between a transit candidate and false alarm. We detect four new and convincing planet candidates ranging in radius from near-Mercury-size to slightly larger than Neptune. We highlight the discovery of KOI-408.05 (period = 637 days; radius = 4.9 R ⊕; incident flux = 0.6 S ⊕), a planet candidate within its host star's Habitable Zone. We dub this planet a "warm Neptune," a likely volatile-rich world that deserves closer inspection. KOI-408.05 joins 21 other confirmed and candidate planets in the current Kepler sample with semimajor axes a > 1.4 au. These discoveries are significant as a demonstration that the S/N threshold for detection used by the Kepler project is open to debate.

With data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, water vapour has been detected in the atmosphere of a super-Earth with habitable temperatures by University College Longon (UCL) researchers.

UCL researchers used archive data from 2016 and 2017 captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and developed open-source algorithms to analyse the starlight filtered through K2-18b’s atmosphere. The results revealed the molecular signature of water vapour, also indicating the presence of hydrogen and helium in the planet’s atmosphere.

U.S. Navy Confirms Videos Depict ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’; Not Cleared For Public Release

In a series of statements obtained exclusively by The Black Vault, the U.S. Navy confirms three UFO related videos represent what they call “unidentified aerial phenomena” or UAPs. Originally released by the New York Times and To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science (TTSA) beginning in December of 2017, the three videos are commonly referred to as the “FLIR1,” “Gimbal” and “GoFast” (the third being released in March 2018). According to TTSA’s website, the clips represent, “… the first official evidence released by the US government that can be rightfully designated as credible, authentic confirmation that unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) are real.” The Navy’s official position now confirms TTSA’s claims, at least, in part.

“The Navy designates the objects contained in these videos as unidentified aerial phenomena,” said Joseph Gradisher, official spokesperson for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare. When asked why the phrase “UAP” is now utilized by the U.S. Navy, and not “UFO,” Mr. Gradisher added, “The ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ terminology is used because it provides the basic descriptor for the sightings/observations of unauthorized/unidentified aircraft/objects that have been observed entering/operating in the airspace of various military-controlled training ranges.”

However, the Navy also asserts that the three videos were never cleared for public release, thus confirming the official stance of the Pentagon originally issued to The Black Vault in May of 2019, and contradicting TTSA’s widespread claims the U.S. government “declassified” the footage for public consumption.

How ESA’s Dark Energy Telescope Will Map The ‘Dark Universe’

ESA is building its first space telescope to investigate how dark energy and dark matter control our universe.

The universe is filled with planets, meteors, black holes, and galaxies—each with their own set of mysteries. But one of the best concealed aspects of deep space exists in what scientists describe as “the dark universe.”

The dark universe is where dark energy and dark matter are hidden, interacting with the matter we can actually see.

And because we can’t see this dark side directly, scientists know very little about dark energy and dark matter. It has taken decades to attempt to understand the dark side, but ESA’s space telescope mission, named Euclid, might just give us some answers.

The Euclid mission could piece together the puzzle that surrounds dark energy and dark matter, essentially helping us understand how the universe works.

ESA’s Euclid space telescope will not only map the geometry of the dark universe and provide it’s cosmic history, Euclid will also observe and analyze the shape and redshift of thousands of millions of galaxies spanning back 10 billion years.

Ultimately, this will provide a large-scale 3D map that allows scientists to see how dark energy has played a significant role in the universe's expansion.

Euclid will also be on the hunt for Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations or what ESA describes as “wiggle patterns” within galaxy clusters. These patterns provide a standard ruler method for measuring dark energy with the expansion rate of the universe.

We have only sporadic fast solar wind expected to hit over the next few days, which should bring a light touch of aurora to high latitudes. Mid-latitudes, however, should stay reasonably quiet, with no real chance of aurora over the next few days. The few bright regions that have appeared on the Sun, have disappeared just as quickly so the solar flux remains in the mid to high 60s. This means radio propagation remains poor on Earth's dayside.
