In the coming years, Chile is expected to host 70 percent of global astronomical infrastructure.
In the Atacama Desert, the world's two largest telescopes - the ELT and the Giant Magellan - are under construction. When complete, they will provide direct views of planets in other solar systems. This will be an astronomical first.
Celestial objects have been observed and studied since the beginning of time. The planets and stars have helped human beings understand the cosmos, the way it functions, and its impact on our lives. Since Galileo Galilei became the first astronomer to use a telescope for his observations in the 17th century, humanity has devised newer and better ways to study the universe.
But what will these new facilities help us to discover? How will they change the way we look at our universe? And will they help answer the one question many are curious about: Is there extraterrestrial life?

Hacking Spacetime With A Warp Drive
Published 12th October 2019

Today, we return with a new episode of Physics Unsolved on something that is slowly gaining more attention in mainstream physics: the warp drive, or Alcubierre Drive. First proposed in the 1990s, this theoretical device would allow a ship to travel between two points faster than light without actually breaking any rules of general relativity. How?
By traveling in a warp bubble. This would allow a ship to travel with space as it moved. As Joseph Agnew of University of Alabama in Huntsville explains (whose paper is linked below), the ship "is relocated by the expansion and contraction of spacetime.”
The math works out on this and has been advanced by a handful of noteworthy physicists over the years, but we're still searching for ways to create the actual warp. The detection of gravitational waves confirms spacetime can warp, it's just a matter of figuring out (1) how to cause a warp artificially, (2) how to control the warp so a ship or drone could be placed in it and (3) how to control the direction and velocity of the warp.
As discussed in the video, there are several promising areas of research that may shed light on how to create warps.

Medieval UFOs & Alien Plagues

The link between unusual aerial phenomena and the BlackDeath was established immediately during the first outbreaks of the Plague in Asia. The first reports of the Plague came out of the East with descriptions of storms, meteors and comets trailing noxious gases that killed trees and destroyed the fertility of the land. It seems reasonable to conclude that these strange flying objects were doing more than just spreading disease: they were also apparently spraying chemical or biological defoliants from the air. Perhaps more interesting is that these accounts echo the ancient Mesopotamian tablets which described defoliation of the landscape by the Anunnaki! Many human casualties from the Black Death may have been caused by such defoliants.

The BOSS Great Wall is a supercluster of galaxies over 1 billion light years across, making it the largest structure observed in the universe so far. This wall is made up of 830 separate galaxies that gravity has corralled into four superclusters, connected by massive filaments of hot gas.

Venus May Not Have Been As Earthlike As Scientists Thought

Today, Venus' climate is far from temperate. The planet is completely shielded by clouds and has a hell-like surface; a runaway greenhouse gas effect makes for lead-melting temperatures of more than 700 degrees Fahrenheit (370 degrees Celsius).

For example, SpaceX, Amazon and OneWeb all plan to set up internet-satellite megaconstellations in the near future. This past May, SpaceX launched to low-Earth orbit the first 60 members of its Starlink network, which could eventually feature up to 12,000 satellites.

Space News | Our Lightning-Scarred Moon – The Evidence Grows
Published 15th October 2019
A striking example of so-called settled science which was settled prematurely is the question of how the moon got its craters. As we entered the Space Age, the debate among geologists and astronomers only considered two hypotheses — impacts, and volcanism. After Apollo astronauts returned lunar samples to Earth, analysis revealed a tremendous portion of the material was composed of shocked and welded minerals.
Thus, the impact origin of lunar craters became the consensus scientific theory, and remains so today. Of course, like so much settled science, the dilemma was settled without the successful resolution of countless anomalies.
In this episode, we explore the growing scientific evidence that interplanetary lightning bolts carved the lunar surface.

New NASA Spacesuits Are Pretty Damn Cool
Published 15th October 2019
NASA's Artemis Program is the true successor to the Apollo program 50 years ago, and it will bring the U.S. back to the Moon in a series of missions throughout the 2020s. The agency just unveiled two new spacesuits for use on missions: the (orange) OCSS for use inside the Orion vehicles, and the (red, white and blue) xEMU suit, used for moon, planet and spacewalks.
The innovations in the xEMU are particularly notable in that they allow for much greater mobility than past moonsuits — astronauts can now walk on the surface of the Moon rather than hop like past missions. Improved dust filtration systems are also included, along with more system backups and a design that allows them to be modified for future missions to Mars.

Mission To Earth's Twisted Twin: Remembering The Magellan Voyage To Venus, 25 Years On
Published 13th October 2019
https://www.americaspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/maatmons.jpg
Twenty-five years ago, this month, a tiny spacecraft ended a remarkable mission which successfully mapped over 90 percent of the surface of Venus and, in so doing, unmasked its cloud-obscured surface for the first time and revealed tantalizing truths about a planet so similar to Earth in size, yjet so different in virtually every other aspect. NASA’s Magellan mission—named for the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who first circumnavigated the globe in the early 16th century—had been launched aboard shuttle Atlantis in May 1989 and reached Venus 15 months later in August 1990. It went on to acquire unprecedented Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery of craters, volcanoes, flat plains, hills, ridges and other geological features on a world long described as Earth’s “evil twin”. So impressively comprehensive were Magellan’s results that they revealed more about Venus in four short years than had been achieved in centuries of ground-based observation.

NASA Engineer Proposes 'Helical Engine' For Interstellar Travel With No Propellant
Published 14th October 2019
An engineer who works for NASA has put forward a proposal for a new way to travel through interstellar space—a "helical engine" that could, potentially, push a spacecraft forward without the need for any propellant at all.
David Burns, from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, presented his idea on the space agency's Technical Reports Server, (https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20190029657) which provides access to documents relating to aerospace that were created or funded by NASA, including meetings, journal papers, reports and patents, among others. Burns' research, which he funded himself, is described as an "attempt to define an in-space propulsion engine that does not expend propellant."

Project Serpo: A Top-Secret Human Exchange Program & Interplanetary Travel
Published 16th October 2019
In 2005, an anonymous source sent a series of emails to a UFO Discussion Group led by former U.S. Government Employee Victor Martinez.
These emails detailed the existence of an Exchange Program between the U.S. Government and the Ebens – alien beings from Serpo, a planet from the Zeta Reticuli Star System. The program was thus called Project Serpo.
The source identified himself as a retired employee of the government, claiming he had participated in a special program.
The program’s origins lay with the two UFO crashes in New Mexico in 1947, the famous Roswell incident and another one in Corona.

The Story Of The Search For Planets Outside The Solar System
Published 16th October 2019
The very first exoplanet - a planet outside of our Solar System orbiting another star - was discovered in 1995 by Didier and Mayor. They were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physics for this discovery. But why did they have to wait 24 years to win it? Often, it’s not just the discovery itself that’s worthy of the prize, but the legacy that discovery leaves. In this case, producing a whole new field of research in astrophysics and making 18,852 other research papers possible.

Hubble Observes First Confirmed Interstellar Comet

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has given astronomers their best look yet at an interstellar visitor — comet 2I/Borisov — whose speed and trajectory indicate it has come from beyond our solar system.
This Hubble image, taken on Oct. 12, 2019, is the sharpest view of the comet to date. Hubble reveals a central concentration of dust around the nucleus (which is too small to be seen by Hubble).
Comet 2I/Borisov is only the second such interstellar object known to have passed through the solar system. In 2017, the first identified interstellar visitor, an object officially named 'Oumuamua, swung within 24 million miles of the Sun before racing out of the solar system. "Whereas 'Oumuamua appeared to be a rock, Borisov is really active, more like a normal comet. It's a puzzle why these two are so different," said David Jewitt of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), leader of the Hubble team who observed the comet.

Space Mysteries: If the universe is 13.8 billion years old, how can a star be more than 14 billion years old?
For more than 100 years, astronomers have been observing a curious star located some 190 light years away from Earth in the constellation Libra. It rapidly journeys across the sky at 800,000 mph (1.3 million kilometers per hour). But more interesting than that, HD 140283 — or Methuselah as it's commonly known — is also one of the universe's oldest known stars.

Jupiter Shields Europa From Cosmic Rays That Could Erase Evidence Of Life
Published 16th October 2019
http://www.astronomy.com/-/media/Images/News%20and%20Observing/News/2019/10/EuropaCutaway.jpg?mw=600
Europa, one of Jupiter’s four largest moons, has an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy crust. In the coming years, scientists hope to send probes to the world to study the chemistry of its ocean and look for possible signs of alien life. One challenge is figuring out whether radiation hitting Europa would tamper with potential chemical evidence of life.
Luckily, it seems scientists won’t have to worry too much about this. Jupiter’s presence shields Europa from many of the energetic particles that stream through space, researchers found using a computer model. Though some of these particles, called cosmic rays, will hit Europa, the radiation dosage from them is not significant, the researchers report in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. This means that chemicals in Europa’s ocean, and signs of life they might contain, would be intact for future study.

The U.S. Army has confirmed that it has signed a cooperative research deal with former Blink 182 frontman Tom DeLonge's To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, more commonly known as TTSA. Far better known for its activities investigating reports and sightings of UFOs, which are increasingly referred to as unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, this new agreement covers research into metamaterials and other high technology fields that border on the realm of science fiction.
On Oct. 17, 2019, TTSA announced the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC), which is now part of that service's Futures Command. The public affairs office at CCDC's Ground Vehicle System Center (GVSC), situated at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Michigan, subsequently confirmed to The War Zone that this CRADA exists and that it will be responsible for executing it.

Have aliens really visited us? What do they look like? Where do they come from and why are they here? Have they given us messages in Crop Circles? What historical evidence is there that aliens have been involved in the evolution or creation of humans? Is there a UFO/Alien cover up? If so, how is it kept in place? This book embodies an attempt to give some answers to the questions above, based on a compilation and distillation of evidence collected during about 15 years of ongoing research. Although this book is not written for people who are new to these topics, "newbies" and seasoned researchers alike should find something useful herein. Detailed information and over 900 references aim to give the reader a perspective on alien intervention, alien abduction, alien contact, landings and crashes. The involvement of military and intelligence interests and their influence on the so-called "Disclosure" movement is also considered. Also included is a critical look at certain prominent UFO researchers, who seem to be helping to keep certain truths obscured or marginalised.Although most or all of the information in this book has been written about elsewhere, this work attempts a synthesis of reasoned analysis which, it is hoped, will enlighten the reader and give them a new understanding about why any official type of "Disclosure" is unlikely to happen, as powerful interests need to keep their crimes covered up.

Chandra X-Ray Observatory
Tycho's Supernova Remnant
Published 17th October 2019
https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/full_width_feature/public/thumbnails/image/tycho.jpg
In 1572, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was among those who noticed a "new star" in the constellation of Cassiopeia.
Astronomers now know that this object was not new at all — it instead signaled the death of star in a supernova.
The Tycho supernova remnant is from a "Type Ia" supernova where a white dwarf star explodes after exceeding a critical mass.
Over 400 years later, data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory reveals a clumpy and lumpy pattern of bright and fainter regions in the stellar debris.
Scientists compared the Chandra data to theoretical computer simulations to try to determine where these clumps came from.
Their research reveals the supernova itself was likely responsible, suggesting the explosion may have detonated in multiple spots on the star.
Understanding the details of Type Ia supernovas is important because astronomers use them as "standard candles" for studying the Universe on large scales.
USEEsMGMnH8
In 1572, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was among those who noticed a new bright object in the constellation of Cassiopeia. Adding fuel to the intellectual fire that Copernicus started, Tycho showed this "new star" was far beyond the Moon and that it was possible for the Universe beyond the Sun and planets to change.
Astronomers now know that Tycho's new star was not new at all. Rather it signaled the death of star in a supernova, an explosion so bright that it can outshine the light from an entire galaxy. This particular supernova was a so-called Type Ia, which occurs when a white dwarf star pulls material from, or merges with, a nearby companion star until a thermonuclear explosion is triggered. The white dwarf star is obliterated, sending its debris hurtling into space.
As with many supernova remnants, the Tycho supernova remnant, as it's known today, glows brightly in X-ray light because shock waves — similar to sonic booms from supersonic aircraft — generated by the stellar explosion heat the stellar debris up to millions of degrees Celsius. In its two decades of operation, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has captured unparalleled X-ray images of many supernova remnants.
In the Tycho supernova remnant, Chandra reveals an intriguing pattern of bright clumps and fainter holes. What caused this thicket of high-energy knots in the aftermath of this explosion? Did the explosion itself cause this clumpiness or was it something that happened afterward?
This latest image of Tycho from Chandra is providing clues. To emphasize the clumps in the image and the three-dimensional nature of Tycho, two narrow ranges of X-ray energies were selected to isolate material moving away from Earth, and moving towards us. The other colors in the image show a broad range of different energies and elements, and a mixture of directions of motion.
By comparing the Chandra image of Tycho to two different computer simulations, researchers were able to test their theoretical ideas against actual data. They found that it's most likely that the clumps came from the explosion itself. While scientists are not sure how, one possibility is that star's explosion had multiple ignition points, like dynamite sticks being set off simultaneously in different locations.
Understanding the details of how these stars explode is important because it may improve the reliability of the use of Type Ia supernovas as "standard candles" for cosmological studies. These supernovas also sprinkle elements such as iron and silicon, that are essential for life as we know it, into the next generation of stars and planets.

"Ring Of Fire" Solar Eclipse 2019
Published 18th October 2019
On December 26th, skywatchers in Saudi Arabia, southern India, and parts of Indonesia will see the Moon pass directly in front of the Sun,
creating an annular solar eclipse.
Regions seeing, at least, a partial eclipse: East in Europe, Much of Asia, North/West Australia, East in Africa, Pacific, Indian Ocean.
An annular solar eclipse is also known as a "Ring of Fire" solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 02:29 UTC on December 26, 2019. The maximum point will take place at 05:17 UTC, and the annularity will last for 3 minutes and 40 seconds. At maximum the Moon forms a 'black hole' in the center of the Sun.
During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is farther away from Earth than during a total solar sclipse, so it appears smaller and doen't completely cover the Sun.
Be careful when looking directly at the eclipsed Sun. The ring of sunlight during annularity is blindingly bright. Even though as much as 94% of the Sun's disk will be covered, you still need to use a solar filter or some type of projection technique.

Space Weather News | Solar Storm Forecast | Two Coronal Holes Keep Us in Suspense
Published 17th October 2019
Although space weather continues to be quiet this week, the Sun has us in a clutch of suspense as we watch two coronal holes rotate ever closer to the Earth-strike zone. The first of these will send us a short burst of fast solar wind near week's end, while the other, larger coronal hole will send us a much larger burst of fast wind in about 10-12 days. This larger coronal hole has already brought us to storm levels the last two times it rotated Earthside and the hopes are it will give us yet another repeat performance. Aurora photographers should get ready for several shows, with the larger one bringing views of aurora to mid-latitudes near the end of the month. Outside of this, the Sun remains spotless, which means amateur radio operators and emergency responders are still suffering poor radio propagation on earth's dayside. However, GPS users should enjoy decent reception this week, even at low latitudes. Learn more details about the coming solar storms, catch up on aurora photographs from the last time these coronal holes were in view, and see what else our Sun has in store.

Published 17th October 2019
Grant will talk about recent work on the small bodies that orbit other stars. We see the dust produced in collisions between these bodies as debris disks, and the large bodies when their comae transit their host stars. A few comet transits have now been detected in broadband space-based photometry, and I will outline the first efforts towards these discoveries. These new detections are complimented by prior transient calcium absorption features, and I will show how the acceleration of these lines provides new constraints on the orbits of the transiting bodies around beta Pictoris. Finally, I will show some new detections of warm dust towards Sun-like stars, and discuss why these detections suggest comets as a probable dust source.

Dr. Roberto Pinotti | The Secret UFO Research Mussolini
Published 18th October 2019
Italy's fascist dictator Mussolini apparently maintained a secret UFO research program. Roberto Pinotti out - Which country was the first to investigate UFO sightings? Most people think of the USA. But that is wrong. It was the Italians, back in the 1930s. This was found by the Italian UFO researcher Dr. Roberto Pinotti out. From 1996, secret documents were leaked to the founder of the Centro Ufologico Nazionale (CUN) research association. As a result, the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini founded a task force called "Gabinete Ricerca Speciale 33" (Cabinet Special Investigations 33), a secret group of experts investigating "non-conventional flying objects". What is behind it? And what does the Vatican know about UFOs and extraterrestrial life? About all this and more Pinotti in his presentation, which is now available on ExoMagazin.tv - either in German or English.

Just last month, the U.S. Navy went on the record stating that three videos that have circulated the mainstream media in the last two years were, in fact, considered “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” or UAPs. Now, recently obtained e-mails from the Navy and the Air Force reveal that ranking members of both branches express different views on what they refer to as a “phenomena,” along with showing disagreement with how the overall story is being reported by the mainstream media.
The series of documents were provided to The Black Vault through two different Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the Navy and to the Air Force. Records were released for both requests in June and October respectively.

Assyrian Tablets Documented Massive Solar Activity Changes 2700 Years Ago
Published 19th October 2019
http://www.astronomy.com/-/media/Images/News%20and%20Observing/News/2019/10/AuroraTablets2.jpg?mw=600
Evidence of unusual solar activity that potentially represents three huge solar storms has been discovered in ancient Assyrian cuneiform tablets. The magnetic storms documented in astrological reports correspond to tree ring data indicating events took place around 660 BC.
This potentially helps scientists to predict future magnetic storms from our sun—events that have the potential to cause major disruption to the technology systems on Earth we currently rely on.
Astronomers started observing sunspots with telescopes around 1610. These are dark patches that appear on the sun's surface and are associated with solar flares—sudden explosions that send a huge amount of radiation out into space. If solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are directed toward Earth, this radiation can result in geomagnetic storms. This is where the particles from the sun interact with Earth's atmosphere, interfering with communication systems, satellites and power grids.
"These space weather events constitute a significant threat to a modern civilization, because of its increasing dependency on an electronic infrastructure," scientists led by Hisashi Hayakawa, from Osaka University, Japan, said in a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Planets Aligning In The Sunset Sky
Published 21st October 2019
The five brightest planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have been known since ancient times. They can easily be seen with the naked eye if one knows when and where to look. This is the best time of the year to catch the Fab Five.
First try to see Mars sitting low in your eastern sky just before dawn.
Mars comes up only a short while before the break of day, so you don't have plenty of time to catch it. See also Regulus and Spica, two of the brightest stars in the night sky.
Four in a row after sunset
That will also be a perfect evening to see Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn at the same time.
Mercury and Venus are low to the west, sitting side by side. Bright Jupiter shining to the southwest, and completing the set of four is Saturn, higher up in the south southwestern sky. See also a red supergiant star sitting between the planets. This is Antares, the brightest object in the constellation of Scorpius.
Of all the four planets, Mercury is the faintest and therefore hardest to see, so having bright Venus as a signpost to Mercury is always an advantage. Keep in mind, Mercury was at Greatest Eastern Elongation a few days ago, and this is the best time to observe the innermost planet.
Planetary Lineup
Three out of the four planets will be beautifully aligned across the sky.
From top to bottom, this planetary lineup showcases Saturn, Jupiter and Venus.

Comets & Interstellar Objects Could Be Exporting Earth Life Out Into The Milky Way
Published 21st October 2019
https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/europa2-580x362.jpg
For over a century, proponents of Panspermia have argued that life is distributed throughout our galaxy by comets, asteroids, space dust, and planetoids. But in recent years, scientists have argued that this type of distribution may go beyond star systems and be intergalactic in scale. Some have even proposed intriguing new mechanisms for how this distribution could take place.
For instance, it is generally argued that meteorite and asteroid impacts are responsible for kicking up the material that would transport microbes to other planets. However, in a recent study, two Harvard astronomers examine the challenges that this would present and suggest another means – Earth-grazing objects that collect microbes from our atmosphere and then get flung into deep-space.

NASA Is Planning To Slam A Spacecraft Into An Asteroid
Published 21st October 2019
https://dart.jhuapl.edu/Gallery/media/images/lg/DART-infographic_v4.jpg
What if a deadly asteroid was on a collision course to Earth? NASA and the ESA have come up with a solution.
Asteroids impacting Earth can be devastating—killing all the dinosaurs in existence level devastating. But even the asteroids that aren’t mass-extinction huge can be a serious threat.
Every few thousand years Earth (a.k.a. you and I) get hit with a massive asteroid the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza, so what is the plan when we get hit with the next asteroid?
We get hit with an asteroid about the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza every few thousand years, and when the next one hits it could cause massive damage to an entire region. So when we spot the next one coming, what’s the plan?
Enter: NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination office.
The Planetary Defense Coordination office is tasked with coming up with ways to protect the planet from threats from outer space.
And one of their great ideas is to smack a spacecraft head on with an oncoming asteroid to see if it can be slowed down and deflected. Members of NASA, the European Space Agency, and others are informally collaborating with a pair of missions that together are known as the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment, or AIDA.
NASA is up first with a mission called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART. The launch window opens on July 22, 2021, and the goal is to nail an asteroid by late September or early October the following year.
Pretty cool, huh?
The target DART is aiming at is one of a pair of binary asteroids called Didymos B. Didymos is Greek for twin, hence the Double part of DART.
While the asteroid is not on a trajectory to hit Earth, it is an ideal candidate to see just how much of an impact will affect it because Didymos B is a moonlet 160 meters across that’s orbiting the much larger asteroid Didymos A, and as luck would have it, from our perspective it passes in front and behind the larger body, causing changes in the system’s brightness that we can measure.
When DART hits Didymos B at 6.6 kilometers per second, the asteroid’s speed will change by a fraction of a percent, but that’s enough to change the time it takes to orbit Didymos A by several minutes. Enough to be detected by telescopes roughly 11 million kilometers away here on Earth.
And not any old spacecraft will do when it comes to smashing into Didymos B.
Find out more about the spacecraft that will be used on this asteroid deflection mission and more on this episode of Elements.

The Rotation Of Venus
Published 21st October 2019
https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2019/therotationo.jpg
Venus is covered in a thick layer of clouds, one reason that it appears so bright in the sky. Ancient astronomers had a good idea of what (since Copernicus) we know as its orbital period; the modern measurement is that Venus takes 224.65 days to complete one revolution around the Sun, a Venusian year. Because of the clouds, however, it has been difficult to measure the length of the Venusian day since the nominal method of watching a visible surface feature rotate around 360 degrees is not possible.

All the material we can see is just a small fraction of the universe. The rest, a full 95 percent, is invisible and mysterious. These are the enigmatic dark matter and dark energy. While dark matter keeps things like galaxies together, dark energy acts in an opposite way – it pushes groups of galaxies apart and expands the universe itself. This event will discuss how astronomers are working to map the universe’s dark matter so they can see the effects of dark energy. The results could help us understand if the universe will expand at an accelerating rate forever.

Published 21st October 2019
Edward R. Close, PhD, is author of Transcendental Physics. He is coauthor (with Vernon Neppe) of Reality Begins with Consciousness: A Paradigm Shift That Works. He is also author of a lengthy chapter titled "The Mathematical Unification of Time, Space, Matter, Energy, and Consciousness" in Is Consciousness Primary? edited by Gary Schwartz and Marjorie Woollacott.
Here he elaborates on several ostensible paradoxes associated with Einstein's theories of relativity. The normal laws that we associate with space and time in our daily lives break down. Ironically, while people associate Einstein with relativity, he considered himself a determinist. Close proposes that paradoxes of space and time are resolved once we bring consciousness into the picture. His model includes 3 dimensions of space, 3 dimensions of time, and 3 dimensions of consciousness. He elaborates on his view of higher consciousness.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.

Bernie Taylor | Paleolithic Astronomy
Published 21st October 2019
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61LdG%2B1DEwL.jpg
Bernie Taylor is an independent naturalist, thought leader and author whose research explores the mythological connections and biological knowledge among prehistoric, indigenous and ancient peoples. His works in these areas include Biological Time (2004) and Before Orion: Finding the Face of the Hero (2017). Before Orion is premised on Joseph’s Campbell’s hero's journey monomyth that is at the core of stories worldwide among indigenous peoples, the ancients, and our modern society. Before Orion explores a deeper root for this monomyth by looking at how hunter-gatherers viewed themselves within the natural and spiritual worlds through Paleolithic cave art from 40,000 ago. Taylor proposes that select cave paintings are fundamental pieces in the human journey to self-realization, the foundation of written language, and a record of biological knowledge that irrevocably impacted some of the artistic styles, religious practices, and stories that are still with us. Taylor addresses a profound archaeological elephant in the room by opening up an uncharted place in our history, which points to the cultural ancestors of mankind in western North Africa.

Why NASA's SOFIA Telescope On A Plane Is "Perfectly Balanced"
Published 21st October 2019
The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a marvel of modern engineering, a 2.5 Meter Infrared telescope flying in a specially modified 747, able to fly high above the water vapour that makes IR astronomy almost impossible for ground based observatories. This facility is a joint project between NASA and DLR and is based out of the Armstrong flight research center in California.
However making a telescope that can fly in a plane and still be stable enough to do the required science is an engineering challenge. It's one that's solved by smart engineering rather than just brute force active gimbal control, a solution which Thanos would approve of.

Fossils Of Planet Formation: Lucy Mission Teaser
Published 21st October 2019
Beyond the asteroid belt are "fossils of planet formation" known as the Trojan asteroids. These primitive bodies share Jupiter's orbit in two vast swarms, and may hold clues to the formation and evolution of our solar system. Now, NASA is preparing to explore the Trojan asteroids for the first time. A mission called Lucy will launch in 2021 and visit seven asteroids over the course of twelve years - one in the main belt and six in Jupiter's Trojan swarms.
Lucy is named for the famous hominid fossil that shed light on our early human ancestors; by making the first exploration of the Trojan asteroids, the Lucy mission will improve our understanding of the early solar system, and be the first to uncover these fossils of planet formation.

The Dinosaur-Killing Asteroid Acidified The Ocean In A Flash
Published 21st October 2019
https://static01.nyt.com/images/2019/10/23/science/21OBS-acidocean-1/21OBS-acidocean-1-superJumbo.jpg
What happened to the dinosaurs when an asteroid about six miles wide struck Earth some 66 million years ago in what is today Mexico is well known: It wiped them out. But the exact fate of our planet’s diverse ocean dwellers at the time — shelly ammonites, giant mosasaurs and other sea creatures — has not been as well understood.
New research now makes the case that the same incident that helped bring an end to the reign of the dinosaurs also acidified the planet’s oceans, disrupted the food chain that sustained life underwater and resulted in a mass extinction. The study, published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, aims to shore up the hypothesis that the Chicxulub event’s destruction of marine life — the result of sulfur-rich rocks depositing acid rain into the oceans — was just as severe as the fire and fury it brought to land.

Modern Planet Protection Rules Recommended & Welcomed
Published 22nd October 2019
https://eos.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/recurring-slope-lineae-mars-hirise.jpg
“Our guidelines on how we protect the places we’re going from contamination and how we protect our own planet on the way back are in urgent need of updating,” Thomas Zurbuchen, the head of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters at an 18 October press conference. Those guidelines for planetary protection must be updated, streamlined, and uniformly implemented across the agency and the private sector, according to a new report.
NASA convened the Planetary Protection Independent Review Board (PPIRB) earlier this year to address concerns about its planetary protection guidelines. Past reviews found that the protocols are based on Apollo era science and technology, are unevenly applied to exploration missions, can be a significant burden to low-budget missions, and fail to address the private sector of the spaceflight industry.
The PPIRB’s 18 October report “really addresses both our changing knowledge of other worlds in our solar system and the changing landscape of space exploration itself,” said Lucianne Walkowicz, an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago who was not involved with the report. “This report is a great first step in reassessing what we think we know, so we determine a better path forward.”

Emily Levesque | Red Supergiants: New Perspectives On Dying Stars
Published 22nd October 2019
Red supergiants (RSGs) are the helium-fusing descendants of moderately massive (10-25Mo) stars. As the coldest and largest (in physical size) members of the massive star population, these evolved stars serve as ideal "magnifying glasses" for scrutinizing our current understanding of massive stars and their role as supernova progenitors. RSGs are the observationally-confirmed progenitors of Type II-P, an intermediate evolutionary phase in the lifetimes of some stripped-envelope SN progenitors, and a crucial step in the formation and population statistics of massive interacting binaries (including those that will ultimately produce compact object binaries and gravitational waves). This talk will provide an overview of our field's current knowledge of RSGs, identify some of the most pressing open questions about these stars and their role as supernova progenitors, and consider the importance of RSGs in the coming decade as the next generation of observatories comes online.

Is Humanity Prepared To Discover Alien Life?
Streamed & Published 22nd October 2019
People always ask me how I think humanity will react if we discover life somewhere out there in the Universe, whether it’s bacteria under the surface of Mars, a biosignature of alien life in the atmosphere of another world, or a radio signal from another civilization.
Will our civilization lose its collective mind and have a temper tantrum on a global scale? Will we become one of those purge planets from Rick and Morty?
Will the discovery suddenly end all religion, as we wait for guidance from our new alien overlords?
Will we gather together as a species to present a common front to whatever cosmic horrors await us beyond the Solar System?
In my opinion, if I could sum up the collective response in a single word, it would be: meh.

Dr Elring Strand - Hessdalen Lights | Dr Seth Shostak - SETI & Big Picture Science
Streamed & Published 22nd October 2019
Alejandro Rojas with UFO Updates then guest Erling Strand who just returned from Hessdalen Valley, Erling discusses the mysterious ongoing unknown atmospheric phenomena being researched through Project Hessdalen known as the Hessdalen Lights, UFODATA and more. HOUR TWO (Live): Dr Seth Shostak discussing SETI, his popular podcast, Big Picture Science and his thoughts on UFOs since the US government has been taking them more seriously.
ERLING P. STRAND: received a M.SC.EE. degree in 1981 at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Since 1988 he has been a lecturer and is an Asst. Professor at the School of Computer Sciences, Østfold University College, in Norway. He is also one of the founders of Project Hessdalen and, since 1993, the project manager. The main goal of the Project is to learn more about the mysterious lights in the Hessdalen valley in Norway.
His work with UAP (Unknown Atmospheric Phenomena) in Hessdalen started in 1983, when Project Hessdalen was founded. He had the responsibility of the scientific and technical part of the two field studies, which were run in 1984 and 1985. He is the author of the report from the first field project in 1984: Project Hessdalen 1984 Ð Final Technical Report. In 1988 a fully automatic measurement station was put in operation in the Hessdalen valley. Since 2002 Science Camps have been held there, where young students spend one week in the valley, searching for UAP, equipped with a range of instruments.
He has presented the results and work of Project Hessdalen in numerous TV and radio programs worldwide, and he has also lectured widely about the project and its findings. Project Hessdalen website: www.hessdalen.org
SETH SHOSTAK: claims to have developed an interest in extraterrestrial life at the tender age of ten, when he first picked up a book about the Solar System. This innocent beginning eventually led to a degree in radio astronomy, and now, as Senior Astronomer, Seth is an enthusiastic participant in the Institute’s SETI observing programs.
In addition, Seth is keen on outreach activities: interesting the public – and especially young people – in science in general, and astrobiology in particular. He’s co-authored a college textbook on astrobiology, and has written three trade books on SETI. In addition, he’s published more than 400 popular articles on science including regular contributions to NBC News MACH, gives many dozens of talks annually, and is the host of the SETI Institute’s weekly science radio show, “Big Picture Science.” http://radio.seti.org/

We constantly forget our history. In the case of UFOs, despite all the attention that the now famous Tic Tac UFO of 2004 has gotten, the fact is there are many cases of very similar types of performance from objects going back many years. They have been reliably witnessed and reported, often by U.S. military personnel. Some of these objects have been tracked at traveling at speeds in excess of 10,000 mph. Richard and Tracey present two compelling cases from the past, both from 1952, that deserve our attention as a reminder that incredible UFO encounters have been going on for a long time. When Exoplanets Collide
Published 23rd October 2019
https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2019/whenexoplane.jpg
A dramatic glimpse of the aftermath of a collision between two exoplanets is giving scientists a view at what can happen when planets crash into each other. A similar event in our own solar system may have formed the moon.
Known as BD +20 307, this double-star system is more than 300 light years from Earth with stars that are at least one billion years old. Yet this mature system has shown signs of swirling dusty debris that is not cold, as would be expected around stars of this age. Rather, the debris is warm, reinforcing that it was made relatively recently by the impact of two planet-sized bodies.

How Close Are We To Finding A Parallel Universe?

Many believe that our universe might be part of a multiverse, but how close are we really to finding a parallel universe?
What if there were multiple versions of ourselves, living parallel lives in parallel universes?
With modern advances in cosmology and particle physics, we’re redefining our ideas of what exactly our own universe is made of, how it got started, and whether there are others out there.
When it comes to considering what might lie beyond our observable universe, there a few popular theories that emerge.
We have the Type 1 Multiverse, a Quantum Multiverse, a Mirror Universe, Bubble Universes, and Baby Universes inside of black holes.
When you consider the possibilities of what might exist when it comes to universes outside our own, the theories are pretty fascinating.
Find out more about the expansion of our own universe, the physics of universes beyond what we can observe, and how close we are to discovering parallel universes on this episode of How Close Are We?
Read More:
Scientists are searching for a mirror universe. It could be sitting right in front of you.
https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/scientists-are-searching-mirror-universe-it-could-be-sitting-right-ncna1023206
"The mirror world, assuming it exists, would have its own laws of mirror-physics and its own mirror-history. You wouldn’t find a mirror version of yourself there (and no evil Spock with a goatee — sorry "Star Trek" fans). But current theory allows that you might find mirror atoms and mirror rocks, maybe even mirror planets and stars. Collectively, they could form an entire shadow world, just as real as our own but almost completely cut off from us."
Parallel Universes: Theories & Evidence
https://www.space.com/32728-parallel-universes.html
"The expansion at the beginning of the universe took place exponentially because there was so much 'energy inherent to space itself,' [Siegel] said. But over time, that inflation obviously slowed — those particles of matter created at the Big Bang are not continuing to expand... [a]mong his conclusions: that means that multiverses would have different rates of inflation and different times (longer or shorter) for inflation. This decreases the possibilities of universes similar to our own."
Is there another ‘you’ out there in a parallel Universe?
https://medium.com/starts-with-a-bang/is-there-another-you-out-there-in-a-parallel-universe-4532e995a56e
"The Universe, as far as the most powerful telescopes can see (even in theory), is vast, huge and massive. Including photons and neutrinos, it contains some 10⁹⁰ particles, clumped and clustered together into hundreds-of-billions-to-trillions of galaxies. Each one of those galaxies comes with around a trillion stars inside (on average), and they’re strewn across the cosmos in a sphere some 92 billion light years in diameter, from our perspective. But, despite what our intuition might tell us, that doesn’t mean we’re at the center of a finite Universe. In fact, the evidence indicates something quite to the contrary."

With all the talk about sending humans to the moon and eventually Mars, it can be easy to forget there are other planets worth exploring. But a team of researchers at NASA has set its sights on Venus, Earth’s closest neighbor and one of the least understood planets in the solar system.
Since the first (crash) landing on Venus in 1966, by a Soviet probe, spacecraft have only survived a total of a few hours on the planet’s surface. But NASA’s new probe is being designed last up to 60 days on the punishing Venusian surface. Known as the Long-Lived In-situ Solar System Explorer, or LLISSE, each of the probe’s components is specially engineered to withstand the high temperature, high pressure, and reactive atmosphere that define that infernal planet.

Fresh Look @ New Horizons Data Shows Pluto’s ‘Far Side’ In Unprecedented Detail

When New Horizons zipped past Pluto on July 14, 2015, the NASA spacecraft was only able to observe one side of the dwarf planet. Scientists have now reviewed data collected by New Horizons during its approach and as it traveled away, resulting in the most detailed analysis yet of Pluto’s elusive far side.
Using its two onboard cameras—the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC)—New Horizons was able to capture spectacular images of Pluto’s so-called “near side,” or encounter hemisphere, revealing features such as mountain ranges, impact craters, and expansive plains filled with frozen nitrogen.
As for close-up images of Pluto’s “far side,” or non-contact hemisphere, those never came, as New Horizons zoomed off into deep space at speeds reaching 50,700 kilometers per hour (31,500 miles per hour). It takes Pluto a little more than six Earth days to complete a full rotation, so New Horizons was long gone before the far side made itself visible to the probe.

Large Hole On The Sun Targets Earth - G1 Geomagnetic Storm Watch
Published 23rd October 2019
A large hole in the sun's atmosphere is facing Earth and spewing solar wind in our direction. Estimated time of arrival: Oct. 24.
Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are likely when the gaseous material arrives. Wind speeds are expected to reach 700 km/s, sparking bright auroras around the Arctic Circle and maybe even in northern-tier US states from Maine to Washington.
Elevated solar wind speed due to the coronal hole high speed stream CH HSS) is forecast to continue into Friday, 25 Oct., and likely result in an additional early period of G1 storm levels.
This CH HSS has been a persistent feature for a few rotations and has a history of causing geomagnetic storm conditions (31 August - 1 September, and again 27 - 28 September).

First Identification Of A Heavy Element Born From Neutron Star Collision
Published 23rd October 2019
Newly created strontium, an element used in fireworks, has been detected in space for the first time following observations with ESO’s Very Large Telescope. The detection confirms that the heavier elements in the Universe can form in neutron star mergers, providing a missing piece of the puzzle of chemical element formation.
This artistic animation shows two circumstellar disk orbiting each other and accreting gas and dust for their surrounding cloud.

This artist’s impression shows two tiny but very dense neutron stars merging and exploding as a kilonova. Such objects are the main source of very heavy chemical elements, such as gold and platinum, in the Universe. The detection of one element, strontium (Sr), has now been confirmed using data from the X-shooter instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope.

Name Saturn's New Moons
Published 24th September 2019
How many Moons were discovered around Saturn? What are some of their characteristics? Can you name these Moons?
In this video, we discuss the recent discovery that has come out of the Carnegie Institution of Science. Researchers discovered 20 new moons of Saturn. This discovery increased Saturn's Moon count to a total of 82 Moons, surpassing Jupiter which used to hold the record at 79.
During the video, we discuss the Norse, Inuit, and Gallic Moon, groups. Talking about the retrograde/prograde motion of these categories, as well as why scientists believe they are so close together. We relate the newly discovered Moons to Phobos, Deimos, Earth and our own Moon (due to a theorized impact with another planet in the early solar system called Theia).
Lastly we discuss how you can name one of these Moons. Here are a few links to learn more about naming Saturn's Moons:

Published 24th October 2019
Our long wait is finally over this week as the fast solar wind from a large coronal hole is finally arriving as I make this forecast public! We have hit active conditions already and guaranteed more is on the way. Aurora is beginning to build now in Scotland and over the UK with promises of more to come! aurora photographers at both high-latitudes and mid-latitudes should ready their cameras as this could be the biggest show we will see for easily a month or more. GPS users should also take note of this storm as it will affect GPS reception anywhere near aurora, especially on Earth's nightside and near the dawn and dusk terminators. Amateur radio operators might get a small boost to radio propagation on Earth's dayside from the solar storm, but at nighttime, expect sporadic propagation across most bands until after the solar storm passes, which will be through the weekend. Learn the details of this solar storm hitting now, when and where to see aurora, and what else our Sun has in store!

Video submitted by Dave Hershberger: Coming home from Nevada City Saturday night, we saw a bright green meteor in the sky at 9:02 PM. Our dash camera recorded it. It was traveling east to west. That's opposite from the direction of equatorial-orbit satellites which travel west to east so as to use the earth's rotational velocity at launch. So I don't think it was space junk. It was bright green in color (indicating copper content) but in the video it looks mostly white. This meteor was probably part of the Orionids.

Beyond Jupiter, Researchers Discover A 'Cradle Of Comets'
Published 24th October 2019

Comets are known to have a temper. As they swoop in from the outer edges of our solar system, these icy bodies begin spewing gas and dust as they venture closer to the sun. Their luminous outbursts can result in spectacular sights that grace the night sky for days, weeks or even months.
But comets aren't born that way, and their pathway from their original formation location toward the inner solar system has been debated for a long time. Comets are of great interest to planetary scientists because they are likely to be the most pristine remnants of material left over from the birth of our solar system.

A Collision Between Four Galaxy Clusters In Abell 1758
Published 24th October 2019
Astronomers have observed an impending crash of enormous proportions.
This system, called Abell 1758, contains four separate galaxy clusters — all headed for each other.
Galaxy clusters, made up of thousands of galaxies embedded in hot gas and huge amounts of unseen dark matter, are the largest objects in the Universe.
In Abell 1758, scientists previously found two pairs of galaxy clusters, each merging with each other, being drawn together by gravity.
Using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, astronomers have learned much about Abell 1758 including the relative speed of two of the clusters.
When these four galaxy clusters eventually merge in several billion years, they will form one of the most massive objects in the Universe.
xvR7QHRjvCg
When two pairs of galaxy clusters collide, the final result is not four separate objects, but one giant galaxy cluster. Astronomers using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and several other telescopes have put together a detailed map of a rare collision between four galaxy clusters.
This mega-structure is being assembled in the system called Abell 1758 located about 3 billion light years from Earth. Eventually all four clusters — each with a mass of at least several hundred trillion times that of the Sun — will merge to form one of the most massive objects in the Universe.
Galaxy clusters are the largest structures held together by gravity. They consist of hundreds or even thousands of galaxies embedded in hot gas, and contain an even larger amount of unseen dark matter that gravitationally dominates the cluster. Sometimes two galaxy clusters collide, as in the case of the Bullet Cluster, and occasionally more than two will collide in the same timeframe.
The Chandra data revealed for the first time a shock wave — similar to the sonic boom from a supersonic aircraft — in hot gas in the northern pair's collision. From this shock wave, researchers of the new study estimated one pair of clusters are moving relative to each other, at a speed between two and three million miles per hour.
Chandra also provides information about how elements heavier than helium in the clusters' hot gas get mixed up and redistributed after galaxy clusters collide and merge. Because this process depends on how far a merger has progressed, Abell 1758 offers a valuable case study, since the two pairs of clusters are at different stages of merging. The new Abell 1758 result shows the further along a merger is, the farther away from the centers of the clusters these important heavy elements are found.

Sara Ellison | University of Victoria | Galaxy Mergers In The Nearby Universe
Published 24th October 2019
Astronomy’s current model of galaxy evolution is built on a foundation of hierarchical growth, in which small galaxies merge together to form larger ones. In addition to the simple accrual of mass, this merging process is predicted to fundamentally change the galaxies’ properties, such as dramatic morphological transformations, the triggering of bursts of star formation and high rates of accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. In this talk I will explain the physical processes behind these predictions, and present the observations that we are performing in order to test the theory, as well as results from new simulations. Although many of the predictions are indeed borne out by experiment, there have been some surprising conflicts as well, that demand revisions to our models of how mergers shape galaxy evolution.

Falling Atoms Are Helping NASA Measure Earth’s Gravity
Published 25th October 2019
https://cdn.earthdata.nasa.gov/conduit/upload/8054/matter_2.jpg
The Earth’s gravitational pull isn’t uniform, as it varies from one place to another. So, scientists developed a new instrument to deliver the most accurate measurements yet.
Since 2000, scientists have used satellites to map the Earth’s gravitational field. But now they’ve developed a new instrument that uses quantum phenomena to deliver the most accurate measurements yet.
The Earth’s gravitational pull varies from one place to another, and it can change over time. Gravity is directly related to mass and the Earth's mass is constantly shifting. Many factors contribute to the change in the Earth’s gravity but what is the biggest thing contributing to a change in Earth’s gravity?
Water! Water covers most of the Earth and is constantly shifting around. Melting glaciers, water trapped underground, all these events redistribute the mass of water.
So measuring the minute changes in the gravitational field is a way to track what Earth’s water is doing, and how the water cycle is being affected by climate change.
Previous NASA missions like GRACE and its successor GRACE-Follow On used twin satellites to map the field. The principle was one satellite would follow the other, and as they passed through fluctuations in the gravitational field, they would get closer or farther apart. Measuring the change in distance would tell scientists how the gravity over that part of the world differed.
But with the goal of even more accuracy, NASA teamed up with the company AOSense, Inc. to try an entirely different approach. The new prototype sensor uses roughly 100 million cesium atoms sealed in a vacuum near absolute zero.

"The quantum sensor, which NASA has developed with Bay Area-based company AOSense, relies on some 100 million cesium atoms. The device launches the atoms inside a cylindrical column and times how quickly they fall. As dictated by quantum mechanics, the atoms behave both like particles and waves."

Nearby Rocky Planet Found That Has Triple Sunrises & Sunsets
Published 26th October 2019
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ECiCTRaUwAAKNHn.jpg
A team of astronomers have spotted a nearby rocky planet with three red suns and they think it could have an atmosphere. LTT1445Ab is roughly 1.38 times the size of Earth and over 22 light-years away.
The stars in the system are M dwarfs that whirl around each other in a complex dance. That makes LTT 1445Ab the second closest known transiting exoplanet to Earth, and the closest one orbiting an M dwarf.
The rocky planet orbits its star at just one-tenth the distance between the Sun and Mercury. Standing on the surface of the planet you'd see one big orange sun and two much smaller red suns in the distance. The primary star would look really big in the sky and the other two are much farther away. They'd look like 100 times brighter than Venus, and about the same size in the sky.
LTT1445Ab's main star is approximately 25 percent the size of the sun, and its companion stars are smaller.
With three suns, the planet will see different weird combinations of sunrises and sunsets.
Imagine a planet with triple sunrises and sunsets every day for part of the year, and nonstop daylight at other times.

There might be rain in the forecast for at least one distant planet.
Far outside our solar system, it’s called K2 18b. Data from space telescopes and computer models suggest that this planet’s atmosphere hosts water vapor. If true, it could be the first exoplanet that has liquid water — an essential ingredient for life as we know it.

Orion & Daedalus Mark II
Published 26th October 2019
The ancient Greeks saw the nearest star, our sun, as a literal chariot, trailed by the planetes, the wanderers. A chariot driven by the Titan Helios, or once, by the foolhardy Phaeton, who could not control the fiery horses that drew it.
As a starship engineer, one of the greatest challenges is the harnessing of stars of our own making, to push or pull great chariots of metal.
We must succeed where the mythical Phaeton failed.
The basic problem is energy, or a lack of it.
We live in the atomic age, so here’s something that should put the energy required into perspective:
The Orion was a spaceship designed in the 60’s, it would have flown through space pushed by a series of nuclear explosions, quite literally riding on an intermittent star.
The vessel could have reached the Alpha Centauri system in less than a century and a half, though it was not truly a starship.
To do so, the ship would have required the nuclear arsenal of the entire planet, all of the tens of thousands of nuclear warheads. Enough energy to burn a continent to ash.
That is the kind of energy a starship requires.

Space News | Donald Scott: Breakthrough – Counter-Rotation @ Center Of The Galaxy
Published 26th October 2019
https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2019/1-goingagainst.jpg
A team of scientists using the ALMA telescope to study the doughnut-shaped cloud of gas and dust at the center of the galaxy NGC 1068 recently made a shocking discovery — two separate disks of gas and dust are rotating in opposite directions. Phys.org reports on the team’s discovery: “Unexpectedly, they found two counter-rotating disks of gas. The inner disk spans 2-4 light-years and follows the rotation of the galaxy, whereas the outer disk (also known as the torus) spans 4-22 light-years and is rotating the opposite way.”
Those who have followed this series might understand the potential significance of this discovery. In 2015, retired professor of electrical engineering Dr. Donald Scott published his mathematical model of the structure of a Birkeland current, which can be identified visually as counterrotating cylindrical shells, and is seen at vastly different scales in the cosmos, from galaxies to planetary aurorae. We asked Dr. Scott for this thoughts on this new discovery.

An Interstellar Mission Found Something Unexpected @ Our Solar System’s Edge
Published 26th October 2019
https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/assets/images/news/PIA22924-640.gif
The Voyager space probes have gone further into the unknown than any other spacecraft. With both probes officially in interstellar space, what have we learned?
In 1965, a PhD student figured out that every 176 years the four planets in our solar system align in such a unique way that it is possible to use their gravitational forces to slingshot from one planet to the next.
This insight, that came to fruition using just a slide rule and simple computer programs, became part of an ambitious mission to send two probes and golden records out into space for a grand tour.
Enter: The Voyagers.
The Voyager probes are two obscure looking robots, weighing roughly 800 kilograms with giant arms and big ears, it took 1,500 engineers and scientists to bring these robotic explorers to life.
The Voyagers took some of the first detailed snapshots of planets and moons—revealing Io’s volcanism, close-up details of Saturn’s icy rings, and Neptune’s great dark spot.
And after traveling for more than 43 years, clocking in 18 billion kilometers traveled, the Voyagers are taking humanity into the next great beyond: interstellar space.
With the opportunity to visit Uranus and Neptune, the NASA engineers developed a mission within a mission, outfitting the probes with 11 different instruments, redundant systems, and autonomous controls.
Find out more about the Voyager mission, what we’ve learned so far, and the experts behind it all on this episode of Focal Point.

Record West Coast heat and unprecedented wildfires are wreaking havoc in California while it it is snowing in Texas. What’s wrong with this picture? How will farmers grow food with so many abrupt and extreme weather fluctuations? How can the flora and fauna survive? The science community and government sources are still trying to claim that the technology to engineer the climate does not currently exist. Does such a narrative hold up to even the slightest objective investigation? As a result of our ongoing “Freedom of Information Requests” from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric administration, GeoengineeringWatch.org has recently received hundreds of additional documents on surface UV radiation. How many were redacted? Almost all of them. The US government and the agencies it controls have become nothing less than a covert criminal organizations. Is Earth’s ozone layer actually recovering? Or continuing toward total collapse? An official source of atmospheric testing for government agencies has admitted on the record to GeoengineeringWatch.org that their testing protocol is not sufficient to detect dangerous pollutants. Who has admitted this and what did they say?
Those who control the levers of power are doing their best to censor critically important information from the public. If we are to have any chance of waking populations to all that is unfolding, it's up to us.

In a keynote speech at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) (https://www.space.com/space-agencies-private-industry-collaboration-iac-2019.html), NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine deviated from the policy line about the Artemis moon program — in which he usually says something along the lines of, "We are going to land the first woman and the next man on the moon" — to suggest that the agency's next lunar landing could include multiple women on the moon's surface, depending on who is selected.
"There are great women at NASA right now," Bridenstine said of the astronaut corps, adding that it's very likely that somebody who is already in the group of spaceflyers could be tapped for the Artemis III moon-landing mission. But that crew hasn't been selected yet.

Mercury Transit November 11th 2019
Published 28th October 2019
The sky will put on a stellar show on Nov. 11, 2019, as Mercury crosses in front of the Sun. From our perspective on Earth, we can only ever see Mercury and Venus cross in front of, or transit, the Sun, so it's a rare event you won't want to miss!
A transit of Mercury happens only 14 times in the 21st century (2001 to 2100). The last transit was in May 2016, the next will be on November 11, 2019, and the next after that will be on November 13, 2032.
With the proper safety equipment, viewers nearly everywhere on Earth will be able to see a tiny dark spot moving slowly across the disk of the Sun. Because Mercury is so small from our perspective on Earth, you'll need binoculars or a telescope with a Sun filter to see it.
CAUTION: Looking at the Sun directly or through a telescope without proper protection can lead to serious and permanent vision damage. Do not look directly at the Sun without a solar filter.

How Scientists Are Hunting For The Universe’s First Stars
Published 28th October 2019
We have yet to observe the first couple hundred million years after the Big Bang. Cosmologists have coined this period the Dark Ages.
Radio telescopes allow us to see the universe as it was just after the Big Bang, nearly 13.8 billion years ago. But after that early snapshot, there’s approximately one billion years we haven’t been able to see clearly, this is what cosmologists call the dark ages.
Probing into this hidden era of the universe can tell us more about how it took shape, and even the nature of dark matter.
The tools cosmologists use to see the history of the universe are getting better all the time. They’re setting up radio telescopes and antennae around the world, sometimes in remote locations to avoid human interference like an island between South Africa and the Antarctic, or on a lake in the Tibetan Plateau.
The new technology is making the enormous amounts of data these observatories churn out easier to analyze. And scientists think they can finally start figuring out what happened in the universe’s dark ages.
Find out more about this new technology, how it is mapping the universe’s first stars, and what we can learn about the very first days of our galaxy on this episode of Elements.

Jens Oberheide | Clemson University | The Tidal Weather Of Earth's Middle & Upper Atmosphere
Recorded 26th & Published 28th October 2019
A variety of weather processes in the troposphere, solar radiation absorption in stratospheric ozone and nonlinear wave-mean flow interactions excite a longitude-dependent spectrum of atmospheric tides – global scale wave motions – with periods defined by Earth’s rotation rate. Growing exponentially in magnitude when propagating upward, tides are a key ingredient in coupling the lower with the upper atmosphere. Tides carry vast amounts of energy to the thermosphere-ionosphere, modify dynamo processes, and substantially change the mean state of the thermosphere-ionosphere including circulation, chemical composition, energy budget, and plasma densities. While the community has made significant progress in understanding the morphology, variations and impacts of tides on seasonal timescales (“tidal climate”), tidal variations on timescales of days or weeks (“tidal weather”) are much less understood, mainly due to constraints imposed by the observing geometries of current satellites that do not allow one to fully resolve the frequency/wavenumber spectrum with a few days time resolution. The talk will present new data analysis approaches of SABER/TIMED data to attack the problem, comparisons with state-of-the-art modeling such as WACCM+DART, and a discussion of the impact of recurring weather patterns such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation and wave-wave interactions on the tidal weather of Earth’s middle and upper atmosphere. Preliminary results from the new GOLD mission indicate a rather large response of the mean state of the thermosphere during periods of enhanced tidal wave driving, an effect that was predicted by models but could not be observed before.

Exomoons In The Habitable Zones Of M Dwarfs
Published 28th October 2019
http://images.spaceref.com/news/ooextrasolar.123.jpg
M dwarfs host most of the exoplanets in the local Milky Way. Some of these planets, ranging from sub-Earths to super-Jupiters, orbit in their stars' habitable zones, although many likely possess surface environments that preclude habitability.
Moreover, exomoons around these planets could harbor life for long timescales and thus may also be targets for biosignature surveys. Here we investigate the potential habitability, stability, and detectability of exomoons around exoplanets orbiting M dwarfs.

The future of humanity - McKenna, Abraham, Sheldrake
(1:39:57 hrs.)
"Predicting the future is seldom a sure thing but that didn''t stop Rupert, Ralph and Terence in this trialogue at Esalen back in '92. Many of the issues they discuss remain unresolved today, long past the turn of the millennium and 2012.
What is the nature of the political and social world that we should construct for ourselves and for our children? The problem of future-phobia within our society. How can society be reconstructed and improved? The crisis in values in our society. The incompatibility of capitalism and democracy. The need for intervention. Rethinking the notion of freedom. Could the idea of the eschaton be working against change? The need for leadership with positive guiding visions. Where will the new positive vision come from? What could trigger the next major shift? The return to local communities. A native peoples' intervention. The danger of pretending that catastrophe is not probable. What kind of miracle could help avert catastrophe? The need for mathematical models to aid environmental and economic interventions.
Electronic feudalism. Terence's view on and the fractionalisation and feudalisation of the world. The dangers of materialism. The need for the empowerment of women worldwide. The resurgence of shamanic practice. The need for social transformation and a vision on the mythological level. A way to achieve zero population growth. The psychedelic revival in England. The need for a collective vision quest. Entheogens and religion. The post-catastrophic world society. Crisis will force change. What is the true mission of humanity? Questions and answers: The eschaton as eraser of boundaries. 2012."

How To Spot A New Age UFO Cult
Published 28th October 2019
In the 1950s and early 1960s, our world experienced an increase in ufo sightings. This was also the early era of free love and new age spirituality hitting the United States. Our world was just coming out of the threat of nuclear war.
Some individuals found an opportunity to feed their ego with what was popular at the time, and using the anxiety and fear of humanity to their advantage. The mystery of Roswell and the new age hippy movement combined formed a new type of cult and religion. A new type of god. A new leader to bring this message to you. The spirituality and new age movement was able to allow these leaders to cherry pick whatever fit their hearts desire. Using the mystery of extraterrestrials to their advantage.
This formula is still in use today and transcends faster and further than ever with the internet at our fingertips. Although Marshall applewhite of heavens gate was the first to utilize and popularize the internet for spreading his message - he sure isn’t the last. Today there are many ufo new age cults using the internet to spread their message.
The new age ufo cults present themselves as unique and the correct way to live your life. With the right answers. Many of these leaders profess to be the only channel to have access to this information from the extraterrestrial gods. Bringing you new and exciting information. And sometimes - to warn you to get your life right because destruction is right around the corner.
Unfortunately what many of the followers in the cults don’t realize is this blend has been around since the 1950s And many of this channeled information to their leader/guru is nothing new. In fact - a lot of the channeled information is very similar.
I’m going to present to you 5 ufo cults and religions - the atherian society, heavens gate, the universe people, the unarian society and the sphere being alliance - 5 ufo cults that are very similar in their thinking, rhetoric and propaganda. Some of these groups do not seem to present any danger and have no bad reputation to speak of.
Others.. not so much.
So my question to you is - if all of these cults spread the same message, but profess to be the only channel, who is telling the truth? And would they all be considered cults or religions if one is considered a cult or religion? What makes one different from the other?
And should we be worried?

Observing Exoplanets: What Can We Really See?
Published 28th October 2019
https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/internal_resources/441
Exoplanets are far away, and they are often obscured by the bright light of the stars they orbit. So, taking pictures of them the same way you'd take pictures of, say, Jupiter or Venus, isn't easy.
The major problem astronomers face in trying to directly image exoplanets is that the stars they orbit are millions of times brighter than their planets. Any light reflected off of the planet or heat radiation from the planet itself is drowned out by the massive amounts of radiation coming from its host star. It's like trying to see a firefly flitting around a spotlight.
So, it takes new techniques and advancing technology to make it happen.

Dr. James Benford | Starshot; The First Interstellar Probe
Published 29th October 2019
Breakthrough Starshot is an initiative by the Breakthrough Foundation to prove ultra-fast ultra-light nanospacecraft can be launched by laser radiation pressure to nearby stars, and will lay the foundations for a first launch to Alpha Centauri within the next generation. Designs for a 0.2c Alpha Centauri mission minimize beam director capital cost by accelerating a ~4 m, several gram diameter sailcraft for ~10 min. A number of hard engineering challenges remain to be solved before these missions can become a reality: Large coherent laser arrays are required. No consensus has been reached on the most suitable sail geometry for stable flight, “beam-riding”. The sail itself requires major advances in materials science and photonic design to produce materials with the required absorptance, emittance, reflectance, areal density and operating temperature. Along the way, the project will enable increasingly fast outer solar system and interstellar precursor missions. Breakthrough Starshot will pave the way for multi-lightyear pipelines of sailcraft that fly past each target star every few weeks. Beams such as Starshot will produce an extremely observable transient feature of Earth and therefore could be an observable of extraterrestrial advanced civilizations.

How Big Is A Proton Anyway? This Decade-Long Debate May Have Just Been Solved
Published 30th October 2019
https://d2r55xnwy6nx47.cloudfront.net/uploads/2019/09/Proton_1300Lede.jpg
Scientists thought they knew the approximate size of a proton until a 2010 experiment came back with a very different number, creating the proton-radius puzzle.
After almost a decade of reexamination, scientists think they’ve solved what’s known as the proton-radius puzzle.
First some basics: The proton itself is not a smooth billiard-ball, but more like a cloud of quarks held together by gluons. The quarks a proton is made up of give it its positive charge, and the threshold of that positive charge can be thought of as the proton’s size.
There are two main approaches scientists have used to find the radius of a proton’s boundary.
The first involves firing electrons at atoms, like hydrogen, which in its simplest form is a single proton nucleus with one orbiting electron. Then, based on how the electrons bounce off the nucleus, scientists can determine where the proton’s positive charge begins to fade.
The second method involves measuring how much energy it takes to excite an atom’s electron from one state to the next, and like method one, hydrogen is typically the atom of choice.
The other method measures how much energy it takes to excite an atom’s electron from one state to the next, and again, hydrogen is often the atom of choice.
Over the years, these two methods came more or less to the agreement that a proton’s radius was about 0.8768 femtometers, and all was well until about a decade ago when someone artificially swapped out hydrogen’s electron with a muon.
Now a muon is like an electron in every way, except it is 207 times more massive.
That’s right 207 times.
And that added weight means that the muon spends more time inside the proton, making its switch to a higher energy state millions of times more sensitive to the proton’s size than the electron in regular hydrogen. By measuring the proton using muonic hydrogen, they came back with a result 4% smaller than the previously accepted size, a difference that’s not insignificant.
So, were their previous measurements off? Or was this a hint at something more tantalizing? Did the discrepancy reveal some unknown physics or new elementary particles?
Find out more about a proton’s size and what we know so far, on this episode of Elements.

Proton-size puzzle deepens

"The proton might truly be smaller than was thought. Experiments on an exotic form of hydrogen first found1 a puzzling discrepancy with the accepted size in 2010. Now, evidence from a German and Russian team points to a smaller value for the size of the proton with ordinary hydrogen, too."

Everything We Know About The US Air Force's Secret Space Plane - The X-37B
Published 30th October 2019
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EH4NSocXUAADWyC.jpg
For the last 10 years the US Air Force has been flying a small reusable space plane designated the X-37B, carrying out classified missions in low Earth orbit. This of course makes it something of a magnet for crazy conspiracy theories suggesting it's a weapons platform or it's changing the weather. However it was always pitched as a reusable platform to perform extended experiments in space starting back when it was a joint project with NASA. But NASA left the project after developing new flight control sensors and algorithms, because the purpose of the final product largely replicated capabilities already offered by the Space Station.
The DoD had similar testing requirements with the extra constraint of keeping the hardware and tests classified, so, the X-37B offers them this capability.

Space Weather News | Solar Storm Forecast | Three Times A Charm For Aurora
Published 31st October 2019
We've just barely had a chance to calm down from a G2-level solar storm due to some fast solar wind that hit a few days ago and we are already being hit by a stealthy solar storm the Sun launched back on October 25th! This stealthy storm has bumped us back to active conditions for a short while, but it should bring aurora only to high latitudes because it is magnetically oriented the wrong way to really have a significant impact Earth's magnetic shield. Nonetheless, it is helping to precondition Earth's shield and make it more sensitive to the next solar storm that is expected to hit over the next few days. This third storm will be from some fast solar wind from a southern hemisphere coronal hole and it could return us to active conditions starting around early next week. In addition to these solar storms, several bright regions are rotating into Earth view, and they are are boosting the solar flux up to marginal conditions for radio propagation (just barely). This is good news for amateur radio and emergency responders as these conditions should last over the next few days and possibly into next week as well. The only group really suffering are GPS users, as GPS reception likely isn't so great right now, especially near aurora and on Earth's night side. However, reception should slowly get better as we move through mid-next week. Learn the details of these three solar storms, how they are affecting the satellites above us, when and where to see aurora, and what to expect in radio propagation and GPS reception this week as well as what else our Sun has in store!

Published 31st October 2019
ALMA provides us a great opportunity to image the planet construction zone directly, and many disk structures (e.g. spirals, gaps, warps) have emerged. In this talk, I will discuss how planet-disk interaction theory helps us understand planet formation process. Then, I will apply the planet-disk interaction theory to substructures in the ALMA large program (DSHARP) to reveal the potential young planet population. We find that the occurrence rate for >5 M J planets beyond 5-10 au is consistent with direct imaging constraints. Using these disk substructures also allows us to probe a wide-orbit planet population (Neptune to Jupiter mass planets beyond 10 au) that is not accessible to other planet searching techniques. Finally, I will discuss one possible solution to the planet mass budget problem: one puzzle revealed by ALMA that the dust in Class II disks may not be enough to explain the averaged solid mass in exoplanets.

Surviving On Venus. Is It Time To Go Back To That Awful Place?
Streamed & Published 31st October 2019
If you’ve watched this channel enough, you might have the impression that I hate Venus. It’s possible, just possible I’ve even suggested that the planet is so terrible it should be pushed into the Sun.
The reality, of course, is that it’s an absolutely fascinating world - the closest twin to the Earth that we have in the Solar System. It’s nearly the same mass and has the same surface gravity.
While Earth is the beautiful life-filled world we all enjoy, Venus is a tortured hellscape, with temperatures hot enough to melt zinc. With atmospheric pressures more than 93 times what we experience here on the surface of Earth. And I always forget about the sulphuric acid rain.
The Soviets sent a series of landers to a horrible demise for a glimpse of the surface of Venus in the 70s and 80s. But nobody’s been back since.
There have been new techniques and technologies in development that might make a serious exploration of the surface of Venus possible again. Exploration that could help us understand why the planet went so horribly horribly wrong.

Rarely Seen Gravity Waves Captured Rippling In Earth's Atmosphere
Published 28th October 2019

The atmosphere is fluid. This means it's subject to fluid dynamics, such as circulation, currents, and, yes, gravity waves. The atmosphere is always in motion, so these phenomena happen all the time; but actually seeing them is another matter.
Well, thanks to weather satellites, now you can take a mighty gawk at atmospheric gravity waves that rippled out over Western Australia last week.
Not to be confused with gravitational waves, which are disturbances in the curvature of spacetime created by massive acceleration, gravity waves, also known as buoyancy waves, are a physical phenomenon where waves are generated in any fluid medium, such as waves at the beach, or ripples in a glass of water.

Astronomers have for the first time spotted signs of water in our Solar System that originated somewhere else. The alien water seems to be spraying off comet 2I/Borisov, which is flying towards the Sun on a journey from interstellar space.
“There’s water — that’s cool, that’s great,” says Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. The discovery isn’t surprising, he says, because most comets contain a lot of water. But confirming its presence in an interstellar comet is an important step towards understanding how water might travel between the stars.

Four Meteor Showers To Light Up The Skies In November
Published 31st October 2019
This month there are four meteor showers. The Southern Taurids, the Northern Taurids, the Leonids and the November Orionids.
Watch for Taurid fireballs!
November 6, 2019, is the peak date of the long-lasting South Taurid meteor shower. These rather slow-moving meteors produce the greatest numbers in the few hours after midnight.
The Northern Taurids are visible before midnight for a week centered on November 12.
Both the South and North Taurids are active from late October to early December. According to the American Meteor Society (AMS), the Taurids (both branches) are rich in fireballs and are often responsible for increased number of fireball reports.
Leonid meteor shower
The annual Leonid meteor shower is expected to reach peak activity in the early hours of November 17. In a dark sky you can see up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower has been known to produce meteor storms. The Leonids produced meteor storms of hundreds to thousands of meteors per hour at the peak each year from 1998 to 2002. The best viewing time is after midnight, when the constellation Leo rises above the eastern horizon. Leonids can be viewed at any place on Earth, given the sky is clear.
November Orionids
November Orionids peak on the 28th. The constellation Orion is familiar to most skywatchers. The radiant is near Orion's head. You can see a rate of about 5 meteors per hour.
For best meteor viewing, experts suggest going to a location away from city lights, dressing warmly, and lie flat on your back and look straight up. No special viewing equipment needed - just your eyes.
Have a nice month and happy skywatching!
Clear Skies Everyone!

Chris Blackerby (COO), & Ron Lopez (President, U.S.) | Astroscale | Space Debris Removal
Published 31st October 2019
In this episode, Astroscale's Chris Blackerby (COO), and Ron Lopez (President, U.S.) discuss their company and their plan to help clean up debris from space.
Just as society is dealing with issues of pollution of our land and oceans, we also have to address the growing amount of debris polluting space. There are now millions of pieces of debris posing a threat to our orbital highway, and these uncontrolled hazards can cause potential damage to the many active satellites that are providing daily benefits to society. If we don’t start addressing the issue of space debris now we will endanger active satellites and the benefits they bring us here on Earth.

Even 'Goldilocks' Exoplanets Need A Well-Behaved Star
Published 31st October 2019

An exoplanet may seem like the perfect spot to set up housekeeping, but before you go there, take a closer look at its star.
Rice University astrophysicists are doing just that, building a computer model to help judge how a star's own atmosphere impacts its planets, for better or worse.
By narrowing the conditions for habitability, they hope to refine the search for potentially habitable planets. Astronomers now suspect that most of the billions of stars in the sky have at least one planet. To date, Earth-bound observers have spotted nearly 4,000 of them.

The Fermi Paradox: Rare Technology
Published 31st October 2019
The Fermi Paradox, the big question of where all the aliens are, has many proposed solutions focusing on what might lower the odds of intelligent species arising on another world, or what might end technological civilizations or cause them to go unseen by us and our SETI efforts. But what if intelligence rarely leads to technological civilizations in the first place? Could there be countless planets in our galaxy occupied by species who never came to value technology?

What Does A Solar Eclipse Look Like From The Edge Of Space? | Hyperlapse @ 165,000 Feet
Published 1st November 2019
In August 2017 we travelled to Wyoming to film a solar eclipse. We launched a high altitude weather balloon filled with helium to an altitude exceeding 50km, timing the apex of the flight to coincide with totality.
Using a series of cameras aligned with nanometre precision, we filmed 360 degrees of footage for three hours from launch. On landing, we stitched the footage together and digitally stabilised the footage frame by frame to artificially lock the viewer perspective on the horizon, cropping down to a traditional 16:9 ratio. Finally, we speed-ramped the footage to create the world's first hyperlapse of an eclipse from the edge of space.
For more information about our launch, check out our article about the project: https://www.sentintospace.com/post/so...

Jim Fuller | Sounds Of The Stars: Imaging Star Guts With Cosmic Music
Published 2nd November 2019
What lies at the center of a star? A stellar core is surrounded by a million Earth’s worth of plasma, so we cannot see it directly. However, the immense power of a star’s radiation causes nearly all stars to pulsate, creating “star quakes” at their surfaces. These oscillations are a collection of musical notes that uniquely define each star and are determined by its internal structure, just as the sound of a musical instrument is determined by its size and shape. Join me for a cosmic symphony as we journey to the center of the Sun, Saturn, white dwarfs, red giants, and heartbeat stars.

The stars vibrate at different frequencies, producing "music" that our telescopes can "hear". These vibrations allow us to probe the interior of the star, down to its very core. Presentation: 05:05; speaker Q&A: 31:30; panel Q&A: 43:23
