Is The Universe Finite?
Published 2nd December 2019
The universe is big, really, really big. Although according to a new paper, it may literally be infinitely smaller than we previously thought.
Every time you walk out the door, light from the Big Bang strikes your face, enters your eyes. This is the cosmic microwave background radiation - the left-over heat-glow from the very early universe. We can’t see this microwave light with our eyes, but we can catch it with even a simple radio antenna. As soon as we became aware of its existence we’ve been feverishly building better and better devices to collect it. Why? Because it encodes so many secrets. And within this light, a group of scientists have just found evidence of the limits of space. A clue that our universe may be actually be finite in size. Today on Space Time Journal Club we’ll delve into the Nature Astronomy paper that just reported this: Planck evidence for a closed Universe and a possible crisis for cosmology by Eleonora Di Valentino, Alessandro Melchiorri, and Joe Silk.

Technosignatures vs Biosignatures: Which Will Succeed First?
Published 2nd December 2019
Thirty-five years ago, a group of entrepreneurs and scientists founded the SETI Institute – the first scientific institute dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life in the universe. We’re excited to commemorate this anniversary. We invited SETI Institute co-founder Jill Tarter and 2018 Drake Award Recipient Vikki Meadows to discuss the challenges and possible future strategies for the detection of life.
Initiated by Jill Tarter in 1990s, Project Phoenix marked the first systematic search for technosignatures. Today, the Allen Telescope Array and Laser SETI are driving our technosignature search.
The discovery that exoplanets are common has radically changed our view of the universe. The likelihood that there are habitable worlds elsewhere in the universe seems more plausible than ever before. Astronomers, including Vikki Meadows, are developing new instruments to help search for life on other planets. By analyzing data from exoplanets and identifying biosignatures, we will be able to search for habitable planets and the presence of life.
Which approach will discover the first evidence of extraterrestrial life? Will technosignatures or biosignatures confirm our hypothesis that life exists outside our watery, shimmering planet and that, indeed, we are not alone?

Mike Turber | “Tic Tac” UFO’s Are Secret US Aircraft!
Published 4th November 2019
We reveal perhaps the greatest scientific discovery in human history which, up until now, has been kept secret. Former US Air Force Intelligence Specialist Mike Turber discloses that the “Tic Tac” shaped UFO’s recently shown in videos released by the US Navy are in fact US Aircraft able to fly at speeds at least 10 times faster than anything achieved before because they have learned how to defeat gravity. Turber hints he has actually flown in one, and states Trump flew one to North Korea to impress Kim Jong-un!

Christmas Annular Solar Eclipse
Published 3rd December 2019
A “ring of fire” will appear over parts of the Middle East and Asia this December. The spectacle will be visible from a 100-mile-wide path of annularity that stretches from Saudi Arabia to the South Pacific islands of Guam.
The event is largely a partial solar eclipse, with the “ring” event lasting just a few minutes. It will be visible at sunrise on the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Oman), and later in the day in southern India, northern Sri Lanka, the Indian Ocean and Indonesia. Skywatchers in those areas will have to be quick if they want to see it, with the eclipse only lasting for a maximum of three minutes and 40 seconds.
After an eclipsed sunrise in Saudi Arabia, the path crosses Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam before sunset. According to TimeandDate.com, the first part of the partial eclipse will begin at 02.29 UTC on Boxing Day, with the last part occurring at 08.05 UTC. At the peak of this eclipse, the middle of the Sun will appear to be missing and the dark Moon will appear to be surrounded by the bright Sun.
Remember to never look directly at the Sun. All observers will need to wear solar eclipse glasses at all times and attempts to photograph it will require special solar filters. An annular solar eclipse happens because the moon is farther away than usual in its orbit around Earth, and it doesn’t fully cover the disk of the Sun. It’s the most beautiful type of solar eclipse, but it’s also the most dangerous, according to experts.

Winter Solstice 2019
Published 3rd December 2019
The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year. It is the day that the earth is tilted away from the sun, and receives the least amount of sunlight, on that day, and in this year. The term “solstice” derives from the Latin word “solstitium,” meaning “ Sun standing still.” On this day, the Sun seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn and then reverses its direction as it reaches its southernmost position as seen from the Earth. The winter solstice occurs ususally on December 21st or 22nd.

Scientists Discover A Mechanism Behind Jupiter’s Mysterious Winds

When the astronomer Galileo Galilei first set his sights on Jupiter through his telescope in 1610, he noticed two strange things: First, there four small moons orbiting the planet, and second, planet had these strange alternating bands of color. Now, over 400 years later, we’re looking at these stripes on the Solar System’s largest planet in a way we never have before.
Fast forward to the year 2011: NASA has launched the Juno spacecraft (who’s name has a strange origin story) towards Jupiter, and after a lengthy four-year trek, it finally began its orbit of the gaseous planet. The Juno mission’s overarching goal is to understand how Jupiter formed, which could tell us about the enigmatic origins of our solar system. Equipped with a magnetometer, an energetic particle detector, a UV spectrograph, and a host of other analytical devices, Juno is transmitting a boatload (or spaceshipload if you will) of data back to earth. With that data, scientists aim to unlock the secrets of this massive, swirling ball of gas.
Until Juno, scientists weren’t sure what lies below its impressionist painting-like surface. We’re still not even sure if it has a solid core. In 2016, using radio signals that mapped the distribution of mass in Jupiter’s atmosphere, Juno found that below a depth of 3,000 km (4% of Jupiter’s diameter), the winds just stop.
Now, scientists have come up with a new reason why (https://journals.aps.org/prfluids/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.4.083701).

It's Bloody Science!
Venus Could Host Life Despite No Magnetic Field, Study Says
Published 3rd December 2019
The Earth’s magnetic field is a first line of defense against cosmic rays. These high energy particles move through space at almost the speed of light, and come from explosive events like supernova and active galactic nuclei.
Cosmic rays are as menacing as they sound — they’re ionizing, meaning they carry enough energy to detach electrons from molecules. For life, that’s not good. Ionizing radiation damages living tissue and increases cancer rates.
With no magnetosphere, extinction events would probably be more common. And on planets without one, life couldn’t exist there, right? Well...not quite.
A new paper from scientists in Germany and the Jet Propulsion Lab suggests Venus, of all places, could theoretically host life in its clouds despite not having a large, protective magnetic field like we do.

Professor Bruce Jakosky | Can We Terraform Mars?
Published 4th December 2019
People have been talking recently about “terraforming” Mars—making the environment more Earth-like by raising the atmospheric pressure so that people wouldn’t need spacesuits, and raising the temperature to allow liquid water to be stable at the surface. If this could be done at all, it would require using carbon dioxide (CO2), which is an effective and naturally occurring greenhouse gas. We would need to find sinks where the CO2 on Mars has gone and figure out how to put the CO2 back into the atmosphere. Is there enough CO2 on Mars to allow this? How easy would it be to mobilize the CO2 and put it back into the atmosphere?
In this Nov. 6 2019 presentation, LASP’s associate director for science and principal investigator for NASA’s MAVEN Mars orbiter, Bruce Jakosky, discussed how much CO2 was ever present on Mars, where it went, and whether it’s possible to put it back into the atmosphere to terraform the planet. He also spoke about future exploration plans for Mars, using both robotic and human missions, and the potential for colonizing Mars.

The majority of stars in our galaxy are smaller than our sun and some have diameters as small as Saturn’s. Many small red dwarfs are among the closest stars to our solar system, but are quite faint, making them harder to study. Both as individual objects and as a population, small stars have intriguing characteristics, some with distinct implications for what life on their planets could be like. It is also important to consider what properties are necessary for a body to be considered a star and how small stars are different from their lower mass cousins, the substellar brown dwarfs.

The Existence Of White Holes May Settle One Of Physics’ Biggest Debates
Published 4th December 2019
https://images.newscientist.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/11143822/153309main_hidden_blackhole_lg-1.jpg?width=778
A black hole is a region of space where so much mass is packed together so densely that it forms what is called a singularity, and nothing can move fast enough to escape its gravitational pull—not even the fastest thing in the universe (we’re talking light) can escape the clutches of a black hole.
And because light can’t escape, no one can really see what is going on inside a black hole. So we end up relying on theories and equations to deduce exactly what is happening at the center of the event horizon.
There are two competing explanations to describe black holes: Einstein’s theory of general relativity and quantum mechanics.
Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity states the mass of a black hole bends spacetime so much that it becomes one single point of infinite density, but according to quantum mechanics there cannot be an infinitely small point.
It can be very very small, but not infinitely so. And this irreconcilable difference is one of the greatest debates in physics, since general relativity is our best description of gravity, while quantum mechanics has been called the most successful theory ever.
But some physicists believe white holes could square these two predictions.
Find out more about white holes and how a white hole could reveal what is really happening inside a black hole on this episode of Elements.
Read More:
What Are White Holes?
https://phys.org/news/2015-10-white-holes.html
"White holes are completely theoretical mathematical concepts. In fact, if you do black hole mathematics for a living, I'm told, ignoring the mass of the singularity makes your life so much easier."
Black Holes
https://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/focus-areas/black-holes
"Don't let the name fool you: a black hole is anything but empty space. Rather, it is a great amount of matter packed into a very small area - think of a star ten times more massive than the Sun squeezed into a sphere approximately the diameter of New York City. The result is a gravitational field so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. "
If you think black holes are strange, white holes will blow your mind
https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24032080-100-if-you-think-black-holes-are-strange-white-holes-will-blow-your-mind/
"Because of the peculiar elasticity of space-time as understood with Einstein’s theory, “the other side of the centre” can simply be in the future of the hole. This is hard to visualise, but the result is simple: in the first part of its life, the hole is black and matter falls in; but during the second, after the quantum transition, it is white and matter bounces out."

The ancient wisdom points towards the accessibility of divinity "with a god dwelling within the human breast" and the myths demonstrate time after time that the gods work their will through our very own actions & efforts.
Because of this fact, the gods are always available to us, at any moment.
We see that the gods stand ready to help, and that their help is very real and decisive - but that it is, in effect synergestic with the actions and resolve to the one who calls upon them -we have within us what we already need, including access to the divine realm of the gods, through our own inner connection to the infinite, if we learn to avail ourselfs to it.
In this broadcast Freeman & David explore the connections between the ancient myths of Earth & The stars.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Sighting Database
Published 4th December 2019
Reports of unmanned aircraft (UAS) sightings from pilots, citizens and law enforcement have increased dramatically over the past two years. The FAA now receives more than 100 such reports each month. The agency wants to send out a clear message that operating drones around airplanes, helicopters and airports is dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized operators may be subject to stiff fines and criminal charges, including possible jail time.
The FAA continues to work closely with its industry partners through the “Know Before You Fly” campaign to educate unmanned aircraft users about where they can operate within the rules. The agency also is working closely with the law enforcement community to identify and investigate unauthorized unmanned aircraft operations. The FAA has levied civil penalties for a number of unauthorized flights in various parts of the country, and has many open enforcement cases.
The FAA encourages the public to report unauthorized drone operations to local law enforcement and to help discourage this dangerous, illegal activity.

Rare Atmospheric Wave Supercharges Noctilucent Clouds Over The Southern Hemisphere
Published 5th December 2019
https://spaceweatherarchive.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/fiveday.gif?w=676
A rare atmospheric wave nearly half as wide as Earth itself is supercharging noctilucent clouds (NLCs) in the southern hemisphere. NASA’s AIM spacecraft detected the phenomenon in a series of south polar images spanning Nov. 24th through Dec. 3rd.
“This is a clear sign of planetary wave activity,” says AIM principal investigator James Russell of Hampton University, which manages the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere mission for NASA.
On Dec. 1st, skywatchers from New Zealand reported the appearance of blue-ish clouds, a rare sighting for latitude of 45S.
Noctilucent clouds over Antarctica itself are nothing unusual. They form every year around this time when the first wisps of summertime water vapor rise to the top of Earth’s atmosphere. Molecules of H2O adhere to specks of meteor smoke, forming ice crystals 83 km above Earth’s surface.
But these NLCs are different. They’re unusually strong and congregated in a coherent spinning mass. Southern hemisphere NLCs are seldom seen outside Antarctica, so this is a rare event.
Sky watchers in south island of New Zealand, Tasmania, southern Chile/Argentina and the Falkland Islands should be alert for an electric-blue glow on the western horizon after sunset.

Geminid Meteor Shower 2019
Published 5th December 2019
Every year in early December, Earth passes through a stream of debris from 'rock comet' 3200 Phaethon. This causes a meteor shower that sometimes lasts more than two weeks.
Geminid meteor shower is one of the best of the year. This year's Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 13th and 14th with as many as 120 meteors per hour. You'll be able to see some meteors before and after the peak days too.
Geminid meteoroids fly out of the constellation Gemini. They hit the top of Earth's atmosphere traveling about 35 km/s or 78 thousand miles per hour.
The source of the Geminid meteor shower, 3200 Phaethon, looks a lot like an asteroid. Indeed, it comes from the asteroid belt and its colors resemble the colors of other asteroids in the rocky zone between Mars and Jupiter. Yet 3200 Phaethon has an unusual orbit that brings it deep inside the orbit of Mercury. When this happens, it brightens and sprouts a little tail in mimicry of a comet.
The debris stream of 3200 Phaethon is broad and massive. So the shower is fairly active all the way from December 12 to December 16. Of all the debris streams Earth passes through every year, the Geminids' is by far the most massive. The meteors that streak across the sky are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor showers, because the Earth is hitting a stream of particles almost head on.
If possible, get far away from city lights, which can hinder the show. The best time to watch this shower will be between the hours of midnight and dawn - regardless of your time zone. So, log off, pack up your stargazing kit and enjoy the show!
Clear Skies Everyone!

Sending construction robots into outer space will help pave the way for human exploration, but there are some real challenges that lie ahead.
Gleaming in white, at 6’2 and 300 lbs, NASA’s humanoid robot Valkyrie looks like a cross between Iron Man and a stormtrooper. Yet despite her striking resemblance to fictional characters, she has a very real, if ambitious, purpose: help humans explore and construct habitats in space.
For humankind to ever live on worlds besides Earth, experts say that sending construction robots, like Val, ahead of human settlers will be a crucial first step. To that end, over the past several years, space agencies and a handful of start-up companies have begun developing technology for unmanned space construction, making important technological (and literal) strides forward.

Steven Kwast | The Urgent Need For A U.S. Space Force
Published 5th December 2019
https://blogs-images.forbes.com/davedeptula/files/2019/04/United_States_Space_Command_emblem-e1554874261101.gif
Hillsdale in D.C. was honored to host Lieutenant General Steven L. Kwast for his lecture, “The Urgent Need for a U.S. Space Force.” Lt. Gen. Kwast is the commander of the Air Education and Training Command at the San Antonio-Randolph Base in Texas and has a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
“The power of space will change world power forever,” Kwast told the audience assembled at the Allan P. Kirby Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship on November 20th. “As a historian, reflecting on the fact that throughout the history of mankind… technology has always changed world power,” he said.
In his talk Kwast laid out an ambitious vision for innovation in space. He described space as a new frontier for energy, manufacturing, information technology, and transportation. Kwast pointed to World War I as an instance where ignoring a new technology led to catastrophe. “But the story of rejecting new and holding and clinging to the paradigms of the past is why no civilization has ever lasted forever, and values are trumped by other values when another civilization figures out a way of finding a competitive advantage,” Kwast explained.
“The nature of power, you either have it and your values rule or you do not have it and you must submit. We see that play out again and again in history and it's playing out now,” Kwast said referring to China’s current plan to dominate space innovation by 2049.
Kwast believes that a Space Force is crucial to ensuring that America does not get behind in the competition for development in space. He argued that the energy market, the transportation economy, information technology, and new manufacturing will be dominated by the country that takes advantage of what he calls a “new marketplace.”
He also argued that whenever there is a new marketplace there needs to be a guardian force to bring order and predictability to that marketplace or there will be violence and theft. He pointed out that China is already building such a guardian force- the equivalent of a navy fleet for space. If the U.S. allows China to take on this role then China will also be the one setting the rules.
Kwast argues that if the U.S. is in the driver’s seat the market will reflect the values of our Constitution and individual rights, but if China sets the rules the market will look more like subordination and the subversion of human dignity and liberty.
Kwast’s call for a Space Force is an urgent one. He points at 5G as an example of China stealing American ideas and technology, duplicating them and then dominating the market. He does not want the same thing to happen with the new opportunities in the space industry. This, he argues, is why we need a Space Force and soon.
He argues that if China becomes dominant in space they will put roadblocks in place for the countries that come after them. Whoever gets there first will have the ultimate strategic high ground, he argues. “They are building that infrastructure. They are unapologetic about it, and they plan on declaring victory as the dominant world power in space at the 100-year anniversary, 2049,” Kwast stated.
“Why do we need a space force?” Kwast asked. “Because it's an economic competition for the values of the future,” he finished.

This Quantum Lab Makes Exotic States Of Matter In Space
Published 8th December 2019
Atomic physicists at NASA are working to create an exotic state of matter...in space. And it turns out, the International Space Station is the perfect home base for these experiments.
NASA’s new quantum lab is studying a bizarre and rare form of matter called Bose-Einstein condensates… and it’s doing it in space! We went inside the NASA control room that’s running these experiments to talk to the scientists behind this quest to probe the universe's biggest mysteries.
The Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) is a multi-user facility that is operating aboard the ISS producing Bose-Einstein condensates, which are clouds of ultra-cooled atoms, to perform quantum physics experiments in microgravity.
The space lab (designed and built at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory) operates when the astronauts aboard the ISS are asleep and is engineered to trap gas atoms, cooling them to temperatures just barely above absolute zero. It is here, in this level of cold, that the Bose-Einstein condensates come into existence.
Find out more about the Cold Atom Lab; why microgravity is so important when it comes to creating the coldest things; and how this ultracool state of matter comes to fruition in space on this episode of Focal Point.
The Coldest Spot in the Universe
https://coldatomlab.jpl.nasa.gov/
“The quest for ever colder temperatures has been a major theme of physics for over a century, leading to such breakthroughs such as the discovery of superfluidity and superconductivity, and more recently to the development of laser cooling techniques and the observation of dilute atomic-gas Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) and super-fluid Fermi gases.”

The weather makers continue to push the climate system ever further into uncharted territory. How bad do conditions have to get before academia and official agencies acknowledge what is going on in our skies? More US troops are being sent to the Middle East. Is the US military about to be unleashed on yet another sovereign nation? Will the ongoing manufactured political circus continue to completely distract populations from the darkening horizon?
Our once brilliant blue skies are now all too often completely tainted by the climate engineering operations. Our once thriving planet is dying. Can our collective efforts still make a difference at this late hour? We cannot know unless we fully face the gathering storm and do our absolute best to turn the tide.

Tim McMillan | The Nimitz Encounters
Published 10th December 2019
It has become one of the most intriguing encounters of modern day UFO research.
On November 14, 2004, about 100 miles off the coast of San Diego, California, the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group was conducting a training exercise.
Multiple U.S. Navy pilots, along with numerous Navy personnel onboard the USS Princeton, witnessed the event. And to this day – it all remains unexplained.
In 2007, a video of one of the unidentified objects was leaked onto the internet. Originally captured with an infrared camera on-board one of the F/A-18 Super Hornets involved in the incident, The Black Vault made international headlines when it was able to get the U.S. Navy to finally admit – they have no idea what that object is. They consider it something they call – unidentified aerial phenomena or a UAP.
My guest today, is retired police Lt. Tim McMillan. He works tirelessly as an investigative journalist, having written for Popular Mechanics, Vice News, The Drive’s WarZone, and others. He has dug deep into the 2004 Nimitz Encounters by speaking directly with nearly every witness that has come forward; and having just completed a popular news piece that garnered worldwide attention, he is here to share his findings about the case.

'Huge Metallic Disk' Recovered in Himalayas in 1968, Declassified Files Show
Published 6th December 2019
Rarely seen declassified files show U.S. officials worked with the Nepalese government to analyze a "huge metallic disc" found at the base of the Himalayas. There's a bigger story here that involves the Air Force and Defense Intelligence Agency, and for some reason, it has never been covered in its entirety by the media (like, ever).
The DIA’s Moon Dust files contain countless reports of objects found in India, New Zealand and Africa. Many of these are unofficially referred to as “space balls,” and appear to be debris from rocket launches. A hydrazine tank, for example, is very similar to the objects found.
But the discovery in Nepal was different.
A review of the several-hundred pages of files shows this may have been the only disc-shaped object wrapped up in the Moon Dust project. Which begs the question: where did it come from? And why hasn’t this case seen more public exposure?
Let’s start with a timeline. Public documents from the CIA, DIA and Air Force — when put together — help us put events in order.

In an interview entitled "Aliens Are My Brother", granted to L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, Father Gabriel Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, stated: "In my opinion this possibility (of life on other planets) exists"; "intelligent beings, created by God may exist in outer space" and "some aliens could even be free from original sin" concluding "there could be (other beings) who remained in full friendship with their creator". Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, another astronomer working at the Vatican Observatory, told the BBC, in relation to the search for Earth-like worlds about to be embarked upon by the Kepler Space telescope, that "we Jesuits are actively involved in the search for Earth-like planets.
The idea that there could be other intelligent creatures made by God in a relationship with God is not contrary to traditional Judeo-Christian thought. The Bible has many references to, or descriptions of, non-human intelligent beings; after all, that's what angels are. Our cousins on other planets may even have their own salvation story – including other examples of the incarnation of the second person of the Trinity. We are open to whatever the Universe has for us."

The world’s largest single-dish radio telescope—the Five Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in southern China—is about to start operation after more than three years of testing and commissioning. While the trials have focused on detecting neutron stars, one of the goals during the telescope’s operational lifetime will be to search for signals generated by intelligent extraterrestrials. Since Chinese officials claim that FAST is already three times as sensitive as the Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico, the second-largest single-dish telescope in the world, we surely expect new discoveries.

Extending humanity to other worlds in the Solar System is at the very limits of our modern technology. And unless there are dramatic discoveries in new propulsion systems or we learn how to build everything out of carbon nanotubes, the future of space exploration is going to require living off the land.
The technique is known as In-Situ Resource Utilization or ISRU, and it means supplying as much of your mission from local resources as possible.
And many of our future exploration destinations, like Mars, have a lot to work with. Let’s look at the raw materials on Mars that missions can use to live off the land and the techniques and technologies that will need to be developed to make this possible.

Scientist Finally Find A Place To Touch Down On Asteroid Bennu
Published 16th December 2019
The OSIRIS REx mission has been scrutinizing the asteroid Bennu looking for site where they can take a sample, but the asteroid surface proved to be more rough rocky than they originally expected. So the target sites were 1/6th of the size they originally expected to work with, which means the navigation will have to be more accurate to get the sample without risking the spacecraft.
Meanwhile elsewhere the Japanese Hayabusa 2 mission is heading home with its much smaller samples, we got to find out some more about Hayabusa's results at last week's American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

Do Black Holes Create New Universes?
Published 17th December 2019
What if every single black hole that formed in our universe sparked the big bang of a new universe? Cosmological natural selection proposes exactly this - but even better, it claims to be able to test the hypothesis.
Physicists have been struggling for some time to figure out why our universe is so comfy. Why, for example, are the fundamental constants - like the mass of the electron or the strength of the forces - just right for the emergence of life? Tweak them too much and life, stars, galaxies, the universe as we know it wouldn’t exist. In recent episodes we explored one possible explanation for this - the anthropic principle and the idea of the multiverse. If there are countless universes with different fundamental constants, then it’s not surprising that a few exist with the right numbers for life - and certainly not surprising that we find ourselves in one of those good ones. But if you don’t like the anthropic principle - and many scientists don’t - then rest assured, there’s an alternative. You only need to accept two things: that our universe formed inside a black hole, and that universes can evolve.

100 Million Exoplanets By 2050? How Will We Get There?
Streamed & Published 17th December 2019
To quote Fraser: "As I’m recording this video near the end of 2019, the total number of confirmed exoplanets stands at 4,104. We’ve come a long way since the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a sunlike star back in 1995 with 51 Pegasi b.
And the reality is that the race to find new exoplanets is only accelerating. New ground and space-based telescopes are turning up planetary candidates at an increasing rate. New techniques will find planets in entirely new ways. The bottom line is that over the next few decades, this mere 4000ish will multiply by orders of magnitude.
So let’s run the clock forward and try to calculate what the future holds for exoplanets. How many worlds will we know about 3 decades from now, in the year 2050?"

Currently there is some fuss about Betelgeuse ...
Head of Physics at Uppingham School Dr David Boyce said on his Twitter account that the sudden decrease in the star’s brightness was noticeable even to a general observer’s eye and suggested that if it is about to go supernova, then the explosion would give out “more energy” in just a few hours than throughout the millions of years of its existence.

When you take a look at the stars in the night sky, they generally appear the same regardless of time. Only a small number of stars ever appear to change on human timescales, as most stars burn through their fuel very stably, with almost no variation in their continuous brightness. The few stars that do appear to change are either intrinsically variable, members of multi-star systems, or go through an enormous evolutionary change.
When very massive stars get close to the end of their lives, they start varying by tremendous amounts, and do so with significant irregularity. At a critical moment, most of these stars will run out of the nuclear fuel holding up their cores against collapse, and the resulting implosion leads to a runaway cataclysm: a core-collapse supernova. Could Betelgeuse, whose variability intensified in a novel way over the last few days, be about to explode? Here's what astronomers know so far.

The Fifthteen Most Awe-inspiring Space Images Of The Decade
Published 26th December 2019
The field of astronomy this decade delivered an embarrassment of riches: stunning accomplishment after stunning accomplishment from the exploration of space. Humans sent robots to the farthest reaches of the solar system, to the sun, to the gas giant Jupiter, and more. Meanwhile, our telescopes peered deeper into the cosmos. They showed us images never seen before, like the first-ever image of a black hole, which was just declared to be Science’s “breakthrough of the year.”
We put together our favorite astronomy images and videos from the 2010s, in no particular order. Some of these images are awe inspiring for their beauty, or their remoteness, or for helping us understand our tiny place in the universe. Others are awe inspiring for the engineering achievements they represent, and give hope for what’s possible in the future. There’s the first-ever view of the surface of Pluto, an up-close encounter with a comet, and an entire solar system photographed in its infancy. Behold, and enjoy.

Rendlesham UFO | 40 Years Of Lies
Published 25th December 2019
When trying to get to the bottom of an event, we often rely heavily on words that come out of people’s mouths. If physical, video or photographic evidence is lacking, eye witness testimony is often used to shape the public's perception of events. For nearly 40 years, the public’s perception about the most famous UK UFO case in history has been shaped by a number of military witnesses. Many researchers have tried to build a picture of what most likely happened in dozens of books, films and “extended” interviews. All of these researchers (including myself) have made fatal mistakes by assuming that one or more of the military witnesses have been telling the whole truth. Recent statement analysis on three key witnesses leads to a startling conclusion. There probably was no unidentified object on any night during the Rendlesham forest incidents. The whole scenario was most likely a tale manufactured by U.S. intelligence, intended to conceal details of a classified exercise or operation.

Science Fiction & UFOs

In 1978, Bertrand Méheust published "Science-fiction et Soucoupes volantes" (="Science fiction and Flying Saucers"). In his book and without reducing UFOs to their cultural aspect, Méheust demonstrated that you could find most of the UFO phenomenon in Science fiction stories before 1947.
Starting with some of the references included in the book, I've been quickly collecting some pre-47 SciFi illustrations which directly or indirectly reminded me of the UFO subject. You can find most of these pictures online nowadays. Then I've been sorting them in chronological order and this is the result.

Strange JFK-Marilyn Monroe-Majestic 12 Document: FBI Actually Asked CIA To Analyze It
Published 27th December 2019
We’ve been looking through the National Archives...and found something no one has noticed yet...the memo is a response from the CIA to the FBI, indicating the Bureau asked the Agency about the legitimacy of an earth-shattering report.
That document in question is this: an apparent wiretap, dated one day before Marilyn Monroe’s death. The wiretap warns Monroe had “secrets to tell,” and that she threatened to reveal them in a press conference. One involved President John F. Kennedy's visit to a quote “secret air base for the purpose of inspecting things from outer space.” The report was routed to "MJ-12," more commonly known as Majestic 12.
But...we have to ask. Is this actually legit? Or an elaborate fake?
We'll present both sides of the argument, including what the CIA said about it after they reviewed it.

Kathryn Bywaters | Are We About To Find Life On Mars?
Published 27th December 2019
Over the past six months, numerous articles have reported weird anomalies in the atmosphere of Mars, from an outburst of methane in June 2019 to patterns in oxygen concentrations that cannot be explained by any known atmospheric or surface processes on the Red Planet. Perhaps more intriguing is the Viking Lander (Viking LR) experiment. In 1976, each of the two Viking landers performed experiments on Martian soil samples. The samples tested positive for metabolism, and researchers recently claimed that like on Earth, this is a sign for the presence of a Martian life. Finally, an Ohio scientist claims to have found photographic proof of "insect and reptile-like" life on Mars. This controversial result has been discussed at length in the media, even though most scientists rejected it.
What does this mean? Are we on the verge of announcing the most profound story since humans first wondered about the existence of life elsewhere? Or are these coincidences that can be explained by geological processes, failed experiments or pareidolia?
We invited two SETI Institute scientists who are experts on Mars to discuss these exciting and out of this world results. Biologist Kathryn Bywaters who has studied life in some of the most extreme environments on Earth and planetary scientist Pascal Lee who focuses on water on Mars and human exploration of the Red Planet. Both scientists will tell us if indeed we are about to discover life on Mars and the consequences of this significant discovery.

Betelgeuse Is Dimmer Than We've Ever Seen It
Streamed & Published 27th December 2019
Over the last weekend, astronomy Twitter started noting that the red giant Betelgeuse, the prominent shoulder of Orion was looking visibly dimmer in the sky, and I had a few people reach out to me and ask me if it was really happening and if I knew what was going on.
This is exciting, of course, because Betelgeuse is living on borrowed time, and it could explode as a supernova any day now. Or, it might not detonate for another 100,000 years. We just don’t know.
What’s Betelgeuse up to? Is this a sign that it’s about to explode? And what would it mean if it did?

Alone In A Crowded Milky Way
Published 1st January 2020
Even a galaxy teeming with star-hopping alien civilizations should still harbor isolated, unvisited worlds—and Earth might be among them
Basic extrapolations suggest that if there are other spacefaring civilizations in the Milky Way, they could spread across the entire galaxy with surprising speed. Why, then, have we found no irrefutable evidence of aliens visiting Earth?
Popular answers to this puzzle—that we are alone, that interstellar travel is impossible, that aliens are hiding from us—all rest on assumptions that verge on implausibility.
The most likely explanation for Earth's apparent solitude may be that galactic settlement occurs in waves and that our species has arisen on an out-of-the-way planet during a local lull in interstellar exploration.

Earth Will Reach Its Closest Point To The Sun This Weekend
Published 2nd January 2020
This weekend, the Earth will be at perihelion, the closest we get to the Sun in our orbit. Between perihelion and 6 months later at aphelion there is about a 6.7% difference in the intensity of the sunlight reaching the Earth, one of the reasons the seasons in the Southern hemisphere are more extreme than in the Northern Hemisphere.
Perihelion is also when the Earth is moving the fastest in its orbit around the Sun, so if you run east at local midnight, you will be moving about as fast as you can (in Sun-centered coordinates) for your location.
At its closest point, Earth swings to within 91,398,199 miles (147,091,144 km) of the sun. That’s in contrast to six months from now, when the Earth reaches aphelion – its most distant point – on July 4, 2020. Then we’ll be 94,507,635 miles (152,095,295 km) from the sun.
In other words, Earth is roughly 3 million miles (5 million km) closer to the sun in early January than it is in early July.

Recently, Betelgeuse has dimmed in brightness significantly for an unknown reason. It is the type of star that we would expect to become a supernova at the end of its life. The new year has arrived, a renewed power structure push for global conflict has come with it. Each passing day on our planet is increasingly best described as groundhog day in a global asylum. Unprecedented wildfires in Australia are incinerating millions of acres and still growing with no end in sight. How bad can it get? How bad will the Northern Hemisphere fires be once summer returns? The more ominous the horizon becomes, the deeper into denial the majority of the population goes. Will a turning point come? Will unfolding conditions soon become so horrific that a wake-up in the population is finally triggered? Will the US continue to pour the majority of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) into making weapons of mass destruction? Even as the biosphere implodes from all directions? Is it already too late? Or is there still time to salvage some part of Earth’s remaining life support systems?
As the warning alarms increasingly go off around the world, how many are willing to put all the effort and energy they can spare into the critical effort to alter our current course? No matter what others do or don’t do, each of us are only responsible for ourselves and what we do with our own free will.

TESS Satellite Discovered Its First World Orbiting Two Stars
Published 6th January 2020
https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/ubernode_alt_horiz/public/thumbnails/image/toi_1338_transit_still.jpg
Researchers working with data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have discovered the mission’s first circumbinary planet, a world orbiting two stars. The planet, called TOI 1338b, is around 6.9 times larger than Earth, or between the sizes of Neptune and Saturn. It lies in a system 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Pictor.
The stars in the system make an eclipsing binary, which occurs when the stellar companions circle each other in our plane of view. One is about 10% more massive than our Sun, while the other is cooler, dimmer and only one-third the Sun’s mass.
TOI 1338b’s transits are irregular, between every 93 and 95 days, and vary in depth and duration thanks to the orbital motion of its stars. TESS only sees the transits crossing the larger star — the transits of the smaller star are too faint to detect. Although the planet transits irregularly, its orbit is stable for at least the next 10 million years. The orbit’s angle to us, however, changes enough that the planet transit will cease after November 2023 and resume eight years later.

Scientists Develop New Method To Detect Oxygen On Exoplanets
Published 6th January 2020
https://news.ucr.edu/sites/g/files/rcwecm1816/files/2020-01/Oxygen_Fauchez_Image_NatAstro_release.jpg
Scientists have developed a new method for detecting oxygen in exoplanet atmospheres that may accelerate the search for life.
One possible indication of life, or biosignature, is the presence of oxygen in an exoplanet’s atmosphere. Oxygen is generated by life on Earth when organisms such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into chemical energy.
UC Riverside helped develop the new technique, which will use NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to detect a strong signal that oxygen molecules produce when they collide. This signal could help scientists distinguish between living and nonliving planets.
Since exoplanets, which orbit stars other than our sun, are so far away, scientists cannot look for signs of life by visiting these distant worlds. Instead, they must use a cutting-edge telescope like Webb to see what’s inside the atmospheres of exoplanets.

NASA Loses Contact With Tiny Exoplanet-Hunting Satellite
Published 6th January 2020
https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MQtD44Lk6TyyYnYzXJhYrQ-650-80.gif
NASA has lost contact with a small satellite in orbit that has been hunting for alien planets for more than two years.
ASTERIA (https://www.space.com/planet-hunting-cubesat-photographs-los-angeles.html), or Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics, is a briefcase-size Cubesat spacecraft that scientists developed to search for exoplanets using instruments and components shrunk down for the small satellite. Researchers also aimed for ASTERIA to show how such small craft can be used to hunt for exoplanets.
Engineers last heard from ASTERIA on Dec. 5, 2019, and then lost touch with it. Ground teams on Earth will continue to make contact attempts until March. Now, while ASTERIA is currently out of reach, the craft — which launched on Nov. 20, 2017 — did exceed its expected two-month time frame to reach primary mission objectives. The craft additionally flew through three mission extensions.

Dr Helen Sharman told the Observer Magazine (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/jan/05/astronaut-helen-sharman-this-much-i-know) that extra-terrestrial life is bound to be somewhere in the universe.
"Aliens exist, there's no two ways about it," she said, adding that "there must be all sorts of different forms of life" among the billions of stars.
Dr Sharman, 56, made history when she travelled to the Soviet space station Mir in May 1991.
The chemist, who now works at Imperial College, London, added that although aliens may not be made up of carbon and nitrogen like humans "it's possible they're here right now and we simply can't see them".

China’s Lander Releases Data, High-Resolution Images Of The Moon
Published 7th January 2020
https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/20190111184505-980x720.jpeg
A little more than one year ago, China's Chang'e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side of the Moon. In doing so, it became the first-ever vehicle to make a soft landing on the side of the Moon facing away from Earth.
To mark the one-year anniversary, China released a batch of scientific data and images captured by five scientific payloads aboard the 1.2-ton spacecraft and its small Yutu 2 rover. The data was collected over a period of 12 lunar "days," or most of the last year.

December 2019 : Earth Changes Summary
Published 6th January 2020
After unusual chilling summer temperatures and snowfall in the Victorian Alps area, Australia is suffering from an all-time record bush-fire that has provoked devastating damage. The fires have displaced thousands and has caused the dead of half a billion animals so far.
After investigation, the Australian police concluded that arsonists and lightning are to blame for the raging fires... not anthropogenic climate change.
At least 150 houses were also destroyed by fast-moving woodland fires in the Chilean city of Valparaíso. Residential areas were still burning on Christmas Day.
Snow covered the ground on nearly half of the lower 48 states of the US - 46.2 percent of land area -, the largest area on early December since snow cover records began in 2003. The snow cover also reached Mexico's northern regions.
Iceland reported a record snow cover of 30 feet, meanwhile 8,000 vehicles were stranded in Kashmir caused by 3 feet of snow.
Storms Elsa and Fabien wreak havoc from France and Spain to Italy. At least nine deaths were reported due to the dual storms that rocked western and central Europe. The strong winds resulted in more than 118,000 power outages, the majority of which were reported in France.
Fabien also caused flooding in Venice where rainfall of 1-3 inches combined with high tides inundated parts of the city.
Heavy rain, floods and landslides keep causing devastating damage around the world: 150 people were killed in Kenya; 4 dead in Khuzestan Province, Iran; thousands affected in Nariño, and 8 missing in Tolima, Colobia; Beirut paralyzed; 50 houses under water in Sigi, Indonesia.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit southern Philippines, killing at least one person and causing several injuries. Roads and buildings, including the local government office, were damaged.

Mars Loses Its Water Even Faster Than Anyone Thought
Published 9th January 2020

Water might escape Mars more effectively than previously thought, potentially helping to explain how the Red Planet lost its seas, lakes and rivers, a new study finds.
Although Mars is now cold and dry, winding river valleys and dry lake beds suggest that water covered much of the Red Planet billions of years ago. What remains of the water on Mars is mostly locked frozen in the Red Planet's polar ice caps, which possess less than 10% of the water that once flowed on the Martian surface, prior work has suggested.

About 790,000 years ago, a meteor slammed into Earth with such force that the explosion blanketed about 10 percent of the planet with shiny black lumps of rocky debris.
Known as tektites, these glassy blobs of melted terrestrial rock were strewn from Indochina to eastern Antarctica and from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. For more than a century, scientists searched for evidence of the impact that created these pitted blobs.
But the crater's location eluded detection — until now.

Space News | Ray Gallucci: Electric Gravity – A Mathematical Analysis
Published 10th January 2020
The Electric Universe theory proposes that electromagnetism, not gravity, is the predominant organizational force in the cosmos. In the Space Age, countless discoveries, from the networks of filaments connecting objects across vast cosmic distances, to the pervasive magnetism seen at all scales in the Universe, to the structure and motions of galaxies themselves are all more easily explained from an electrical rather than gravity-centric viewpoint. However, this is not to say that the Electric Universe denies gravity’s existence.
For over forty years, the leading proponent of the Electric Universe model, Wal Thornhill, our chief science advisor and physicist, has worked on an explanation for gravity that actually links gravity and electromagnetism. In recent years, retired nuclear engineer Dr. Raymond Gallucci discovered Thornhill’s electrical theory of gravity. Today Dr. Gallucci presents the simple, independent mathematical modeling he has performed to test the theory’s plausibility.

840 Minor Planets Discovered Beyond Neptune
Published 10th January 2020
Our solar system is a tiny but wonderfully familiar corner of the vast, dark universe – we have even been able to land spacecraft on our celestial neighbours. Yet its outer reaches are still remarkably unmapped. Now we have discovered 840 small worlds in the distant and hard-to-explore region beyond Neptune. This is the largest set of discoveries ever made, increasing the number of distant objects with well known paths around the sun by 50%.
These little icy worlds are important as they help us tell the solar system’s history. They can also help us test the idea that there’s a yet unseen planet lurking in the outer solar system.

Tour Of The Crab Nebula 3D Visualization
Published 13th January 2020
In the year 1054 AD, Chinese sky watchers witnessed the sudden appearance of a "new star" in the heavens, which they recorded as six times brighter than Venus, making it the brightest observed stellar event in recorded history. This "guest star," as they described it, was so bright that people saw it in the sky during the day for almost a month. Native Americans also recorded its mysterious appearance in petroglyphs.
Observing the nebula with the largest telescope of the time, Lord Rosse in 1844 named the object the "Crab" because of its tentacle-like structure. But it wasn't until the 1900s that astronomers realized the nebula was the surviving relic of the 1054 supernova, the explosion of a massive star.
Now, astronomers and visualization specialists have combined the visible, infrared, and X-ray vision of NASA's Great Observatories to create a three-dimensional representation of the dynamic Crab Nebula. Certain structures and processes, driven by the pulsar engine at the heart of the nebula, are best seen at particular wavelengths.
The multiwavelength computer graphics visualization is based on images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. The new video dissects the intricate nested structure that makes up this stellar corpse, giving viewers a better understanding of the extreme and complex physical processes powering the nebula. The powerhouse "engine" energizing the entire system is a pulsar, a rapidly spinning neutron star, the super-dense crushed core of the exploded star. The tiny dynamo is blasting out blistering pulses of radiation towards us 30 times a second with unbelievable clockwork precision.
The visualization is one of a new generation of products and experiences being developed by the NASA's Universe of Learning program. It helps illustrate the power of what astronomers call “multiwavelength” astronomy where different types of light are combined to get a more complete understanding of the Universe and objects within it.

A Quick Look @ The Crab Nebula 3D Visualization
Published 13th January 2020
A new visualization using data from NASA’s “Great Observatories” provides an idea of what the Crab Nebula looks like in 3D.
The Crab Nebula was the brightest “new star” when it was seen in 1054 AD after a massive star ran out of fuel and exploded.
Today, astronomers know that the Crab is powered by a quickly spinning, highly magnetized neutron star called a pulsar.
By combining data from Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer, experts can piece together how the Crab may appear in three dimensions.
Certain structures and processes, driven by the pulsar, are revealed by the X-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths each telescope detects.
This visualization, created by NASA’s Universe of Learning program, demonstrates why different types of light are needed to fully explore objects in space.

Animated View Of Phosphorus-bearing Molecules Found In A Star-forming Region And Comet 67p
This animation shows the key results from a study that has revealed the interstellar thread of phosphorus, one of life’s building blocks.
Thanks to ALMA, astronomers could pinpoint where phosphorus-bearing molecules form in star-forming regions like AFGL 5142. The background of this animation shows a part of the night sky in the constellation of Auriga, where the star-forming region AFGL 5142 is located. The ALMA image of this object appears on the top left, and one of the locations where the team found phosphorus-bearing molecules is indicated by a circle. The most common phosphorus-bearing molecule in AFGL 5142 is phosphorus monoxide, represented in orange and red in the diagram that appears on the bottom left. Another molecule found was phosphorus nitride, represented in orange and blue.
Using data from the ROSINA instrument onboard ESA’s Rosetta, astronomers also found phosphorus monoxide on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, which appears on the bottom right at the end of the video. This first sighting of phosphorus monoxide on a comet helps astronomers draw a connection between star-forming regions, where the molecule is created, all the way to Earth, where it played a crucial role in starting life.

'Cold Neptune' & Two Temperate Super-Earths Found Orbiting Nearby Stars
Published 15th January 2020
A "cold Neptune" and two potentially habitable worlds are part of a cache of five newly discovered exoplanets and eight exoplanet candidates found orbiting nearby red dwarf stars, which are reported in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series by a team led by Carnegie's Fabo Feng and Paul Butler.
The two potentially habitable planets are orbiting GJ180 and GJ229A, which are among the nearest stars to our own Sun, making them prime targets for observations by next-generation space- and land-based telescopes. They are both super-Earths with at least 7.5 and 7.9 times our planet's mass and orbital periods of 106 and 122 days respectively.
The Neptune-mass planet—found orbiting GJ433 at a distance at which surface water is likely to be frozen—is probably the first of its kind that is a realistic candidate for future direct imaging.
"GJ 433 d is the nearest, widest, and coldest Neptune-like planet ever detected," Feng added.

Sounds Of The Solar Wind From NASA's Parker Solar Probe
Published 15th January 2020
There’s a wind that emanates from the Sun. It blows not like a soft whistle but like a hurricane’s scream. Made of electrons, protons and heavier ions, the solar wind courses through the solar system at roughly 1 million mph (1.6 million kph), barreling over everything in its path. Yet through the wind’s roar, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe hears the small chirps, squeaks and rustles that hint at the origin of this mysterious and ever-present wind. The spacecraft’s FIELDS instrument can eavesdrop on the electric and magnetic fluctuations caused by plasma waves. The Parker Solar Probe it can “hear” when the waves and particles interact with one another, recording frequency and amplitude information about these plasma waves that scientists could then play as sound waves. And it results in some striking sounds.

Moon 'Shrooms? Fungi Eyed To Help Build Lunar Bases & Mars Outposts
Published 15th January 2020
https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mGKjKQegKVNtC4rkkpcix7-970-80.png
Fungus could be very much among us when humanity sets up shop on the moon and beyond.
NASA researchers are investigating the potential of mycelia — the mass of nutrient-absorbing, widely branching underground threads that make up much of a fungus's bulk — to help construct outposts on the moon and Mars.
"Right now, traditional habitat designs for Mars are like a turtle — carrying our homes with us on our backs," project principal investigator Lynn Rothschild, of NASA's Ames Research Center in California, said in a statement.
This is "a reliable plan, but with huge energy costs," she added in a NASA statement. "Instead, we can harness mycelia to grow these habitats ourselves when we get there."

Solutions To The Three Body Problem
Published 20th January 2020
The three body problem is famous for being impossible to solve. But actually it's been solved many times, and in ingenious ways. Some of those solutions are incredibly useful, and some are incredibly bizarre.
Physics - and arguably all of science changed forever in 1687 when Isaac Newton published his Principia. Within it were equations of motion and gravity that transformed our erratic-seeming cosmos into a perfectly tuned machine of clockwork predictability. Given the current positions and velocities of the bodies of the solar system, Newton’s equations could be used in principle be used to calculate their locations at any distant time, future or past. I say “in principle” because the reality isn’t so simple. Despite the beauty of Newton’s equations, they lead to a simple solution for planetary motion in only one case - when two and only two bodies orbit each other sans any other gravitational influence in the universe. Add just one more body and in most cases all motion becomes fundamentally chaotic - there exists no simple so

Space News | Ray Gallucci: Strobe Star Or Neutron Star?
Published 20th January 2020
One of the most mysterious astrophysical phenomena ever observed is called a pulsar. First discovered more than half a century ago, a pulsar is a source of regular pulses of radiation. Astronomers believe that the source of the emissions is a massively dense, highly magnetized and rapidly rotating star mostly composed of tightly packed neutrons, called a neutron star. A rapidly spinning neutron star is thought to act very much like a lighthouse, with the light beams becoming visible on Earth with each resolution of the star.
However, plasma cosmology and the Electric Universe theory have suggested that the “neutron star” is a physically implausible object, and that the source of a pulsar’s emissions is electromagnetic oscillations involving a normal star. In this episode, retired nuclear engineer Dr. Raymond Gallucci offers an independent analysis of the mathematical plausibilities of the respective theories.

Spitzer Telescope To Be Decommissioned After Sixteen Years
Published 20th January 2020

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, which has studied the universe in infrared light since its launch in August of 2003, will be decommissioned on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
The space-based observatory has been a real trooper and has operated more than 11 years beyond its original planned operational life. The spacecraft follows a heliocentric orbit and has slowly drifted away from Earth since its deployment. This increasing distance requires the instrument’s solar panels be tilted away from the Sun when its antenna is pointed toward Earth to return data.

Alien Life Is Out There. But Our Theories Are Steering Us Away From It.

If we discovered evidence of alien life, would we even realize it? Life on other planets could be so different from what we're used to that we might not recognize any biological signatures that it produces.
Recent years have seen changes to our theories about what counts as a biosignature and which planets might be habitable, and further turnarounds are inevitable. But the best we can really do is interpret the data we have with our current best theory, not with some future idea we haven't had yet.
This is a big issue for those involved in the search for extraterrestrial life. As Scott Gaudi of Nasa's Advisory Council has said: "One thing I am quite sure of, now having spent more than 20 years in this field of exoplanets … expect the unexpected."

Military Files Show Extraterrestrial Base Under Alaska Observed In 1987
Published 18th January 2020
By the late 1980s, the Stargate Project was in full swing. Declassified files show the US government had used remote viewing, the ability to psychically see locations at a distance, for over a decade.
When browsing through CIA archives, we found something that made us do a double take: the apparent discovery of three extraterrestrial bases by an intelligence analyst. The obscure handwritten document, sub-classified “Sun Streak” under purview of the DoD’s Defense Intelligence Agency, describes secret, underground facilities.
One is reported beneath Mount Hayes, Alaska. Despite its status as the highest mountain in the state’s eastern range, Hayes is rarely climbed due to its remoteness and inaccessibility.
It’s also at the epicenter of what locals call the Alaska Triangle…a hot spot for reports of unexplained lights, vanishing hikers and even diminutive beings living in the wilderness.
So, what exactly did the U.S. government discover? And could a subterranean facility have anything to do with strange reports in the area dating back decades?

Parker Solar Probe Began Its Fourth Solar Encounter Today
Published 23rd January 2020
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe began its fourth solar encounter today at 9:00 a.m. EST, at a distance of about 23.3 million miles from the Sun’s surface. It will reach perihelion, its closest distance to our star, during this orbit on Jan. 29 at about 4:30 a.m. EST.
The fourth perihelion will send the spacecraft within 11.6 million miles of the Sun, closer than its first three perihelia, which were at about 15 million miles from the Sun. The spacecraft’s four instrument suites will acquire data in this new environment, sampling this previously unexplored region around the Sun and potentially revealing new information about the solar wind and atmosphere.
It will be several weeks after the end of the solar encounter phase before the science data begins downlinking to Earth.
Parker Solar Probe is a NASA robotic spacecraft launched in 2018, with the mission of repeatedly probing and making observations of the outer corona of the Sun.

Sun-Earth Connection
Published 23rd January 2020
What safeguards our solar system is our star. The Sun provides a shield, stretching beyond the last planet in its orbit, a force field that deflects these cosmic "rays". But these "solar winds" can be dangerous too, especially during outbursts called coronal mass ejections.
Want a vision of Earth gone wrong?
Just look at what solar storms do to our sister planet, Venus. They strip away lighter elements in its upper atmosphere, hydrogen, oxygen and the molecule they form: Water. What's left is a witch's brew of noxious chemicals including thick sulfurous clouds.
How has Earth avoided the grim fate of Venus?
We can see the answer as the solar storm approaches Earth. Our planet has a protective shield all it's own. A powerful magnetic field generated deep within its core. In fact, that's just our first line of defense. Much of the solar energy that gets through is reflected back to space by clouds, ice, and snow. The energy that Earth absorbs is just enough to power a remarkable planetary engine: The Climate.
It's set in motion by the unevenness of solar heating, due in part to the cycles of day and night, and the seasons that cause warm tropical winds to blow toward the poles, and cold polar air toward the equator. Wind currents drive surface ocean currents. Earth's climate engine has countless moving parts, tides and terrain, cross winds and currents, all working to equalize temperatures around the globe.

Solar Storm Forecast | Multiple Storms Launch & Martian Ice Mining
Published 22nd January 2020
This week our Sun shows more signs of life by firing multiple solar storms in the past few days. Several of these have been Earth-directed, and although small, they are nonetheless a welcome sight. Along with some fast solar wind from a coronal hole hitting Earth now, these mini-storms are causing some brilliant displays of aurora at high latitudes. In addition, our Sun continues to keep the solar flux in the low 70s, which means we are remaining in the marginal range for radio propagation on Earth's dayside. See the details of the storming this week including how it will affect GPS reception and radio communications, and in a special segment on Mars, learn how a recent scientific study on Martian ice-mining impacts planned landing sites for the first human mission to the Red Planet.

The Closest Planetary Conjunction Of The Year
Published 26th January 2020
Brilliant Venus and the waxing crescent Moon will be together on January 27, for an eye-catching sunset sky show. The planet Venus is so bright you can see it in broad daylight--if you know where to look.
Venus, the sky's brightest planet, is pairing up with Neptune, the faintest planet on January 27th. Neptune is the only solar system planet that you absolutely cannot see without an optical aid. So you won't see Neptune with the eye. If you own a small telescope try to catch the celestial duo. Venus and Neptune will stage the closest planetary conjunction of the year on January 27, 2020
On January 28th, for the second night in a row, Venus and the crescent Moon are pairing up in the southwestern sky at dusk after the sun sets.
Right now, Venus is 75% illuminated. Because it's still nearly 105 million miles (169 million km) from Earth, Venus continues to appear relatively small in telescopes. Nonetheless, as it continues to come around from behind the Sun, the illumination angle has changed enough to show that it now appears distinctly gibbous in shape.
Watch Out for the Da Vinci Glow
If you go outside to witness the meating of Venus and the waxing crescent Moon, pay special attention to the Moon. Cradled between the arms of the waxing crescent is a display of light and shadow that puzzled sky watchers for thousands of years ... until Leonardo da Vinci figured it out. It's the "Da Vinci Glow" also known as Earthshine. Note the soft glow of Earthshine on the darkened portion of the Moon.

Ellen Stofan | Venus: Our Hothouse Twin
Published 25th January 2020
Venus is Earth’s closest neighbor and is similar in size and overall chemical composition. It sits on the edge of the habitable zone, the zone around a parent star where water could be present on a planet’s surface. However, Venus has gone down a very different evolutionary path from Earth, with a carbon dioxide-dominated greenhouse atmosphere resulting in surface temperatures of ~460°C (~860°F). Surface missions to Venus by the US and the Soviet Union and orbital missions by the USSR, NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Japanese have unveiled a very alien and complicated planet. The atmosphere super-rotates, and produces liquid sulfuric acid droplets that can corrode incoming science probes. The surface is dominated by volcanic landforms and is relatively geologically young. Some workers have interpreted the relatively uniform distribution of impact craters on the surface to indicate that a major volcanic resurfacing of the planet occurred about 750 million years ago, though other data contradicts this hypothesis.
Debate also is ongoing on whether or not Venus had a surface water ocean early in its history. Isotopic data from early probes indicates that the planet has lost an ocean’s worth of water over its history, but no clear signs of water remain on its relatively young surface. Data from future landers can help resolve the debate, as the signature of an early wet Venus should be present in the composition of surface rocks and more detailed isotopic studies of the atmosphere. This theory of an early, wet Venus has led some to suggest that life could have evolved on Venus and perhaps even persist in the stable cloud layers of the atmosphere.
As we search for Earth-like planets around other stars, continued exploration of Venus will help us to understand whether Venus was ever habitable, and thus further inform the likelihood of habitable planets beyond our solar system. Venus also serves as a laboratory for understanding CO2-dominated atmospheres and as a clear warning of the effects of continued anthropogenic carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

Space News | Ev Cochrane: Memories Of An "Alien" Sun
Published 24th January 2020
In previous episodes, we have introduced the strange and special role of our planet’s parent star in ancient world traditions. In global myth, folklore, religion and rock art, the celestial body identified as the Sun bares no resemblance at all to the Sun as it appears in our sky today. The recurring anomalous representations include an orb or a star within a crescent, and the many traditions which depict the Sun as a spectacular celestial wheel, sometimes with a warrior-hero appearing as the axle of the wheel. With no modern natural referent, why do such depictions recur in ancient traditions, art and storytelling across the world?
For over forty years, comparative mythologist Ev Cochrane, along with colleague Dave Talbott, have exhaustively explored this question. Through decades of cross-cultural investigation, they have worked to reconstruct the historical phenomena recorded in the ancient record, in pre-history. Today, Ev continues in more detail on the linguistic aspects of his investigation, beginning with a provocative suggestion: that the ancient sun-god and Thunder-god may be one and the same celestial entity.

To Defy Gravity – How Will It Change The World?
Being able to hop into a personal spacecraft at a moments notice and shoot off into the night sky or space, has it’s advantages, and is, frankly extremely appealing.
But the reality of the situation is that gravity control is more about efficiency, cost reduction, safety, reliability, search & rescue, et cetera.
Just as with lasers, gravity control will have a million and one uses, beyond mere personal spacecraft.
It’s not that we have some kind of special abilities, it’s that we can see where the future is heading, as Arthur C. Clarke and many other futurists did.
Oh yes, this is quite real.

Did A UFO-Air Force Encounter Accidentally Kill Four People In New York?
Published 14th February 2020
Buried in a Project Blue Book file dated 1954 is a story that’s been forgotten by most...save for residents of Walesville, a small village in upstate New York.
That July, an Air Force F-94 Starfire was flying toward an unidentified object to investigate it when something went wrong. Within 25 minutes, the plane would crash, taking the lives of four people on the ground — destroying two houses and an automobile with a family inside.
A military spokesman said a fire caused the crash, but an investigation later found no evidence of smoke or oil in the remnants of the cockpit. The official USAF investigation blamed a series of coincidences for the crash, but a report written by Donald Keyhoe is in the Blue Book file, which suggests the UFO itself was to blame. Electromagnetic interference from UFO encounters has been seen many times before, so this fits that pattern.
As we'll show in the video, the full story is filled with contradictory statements from USAF personnel at the time, and even inaccurate explanations given to journalists in 1954 that were only learned to be misleading when these files were declassified.

Alexander Wendt | Wanted: A Science Of UFOs
Published 4th February 2020
If any UFOs proved to be extra-terrestrial it would be one of the most important events in human history. Yet there has long been a taboo in modern society on taking UFOs seriously, which has blocked any systematic science to try to determine what they are. Skeptics will say that is because UFOs do not exist, but the US Navy has recently confirmed that they do, and is making an official policy change to reflect this fact, from ignoring its pilots’ UFO encounters to requiring them to file reports. Yet even with the Navy’s revelation,
the UFO taboo remains so strong that the scientific community continues to show no interest in whether or not UFOs are ETs. In this talk Alexander Wendt argues that the UFO taboo is incoherent and unjustified, and proposes a crowd-funded science of UFOs as a way of beginning to learn more about these elusive phenomena. Alexander Wendt received his Ph.D. in political science from the
University of Minnesota in 1989. He subsequently taught at Yale, Dartmouth, and the University of Chicago before moving to The Ohio State University in 2004. His research interests center on international relations, where he is one of the most cited scholars in the field, and the philosophy of social science. He is the author of two books, Social Theory of International Politics (Cambridge, 1999), which won the “Best Book of the Decade” award from the International Studies Association in 2006; and Quantum Mind and Social Science (Cambridge, 2015), which hasn’t won anything yet.

Astronomers To Sweep "Entire Sky" For Signs Of Extraterrestrial Life
Published 15th February 2020
https://i1.wp.com/www.webbyfeed.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/3264.jpg
Astronomers will sweep the entire sky for signs of extraterrestrial life for the first time, using 28 giant radio telescopes in an unprecedented hunt for alien civilisations.
The project is a collaboration between the privately-funded Seti Institute and the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico, one of the world’s most powerful radio observatories. Gaining real-time access to all the data gathered by VLA is considered a major coup for scientists hunting extraterrestrial lifeforms and an indication that the field has “gone mainstream”.
Normal astronomy operations will continue at the VLA, which was featured in the 1997 film Contact, but under the new arrangement all data will be duplicated and fed through a dedicated supercomputer that will search for beeps, squawks or other signatures of distant technology.

The series of shots for this time-lapse video were taken by the Expedition 61 crew on board the International Space Station on January 23, 2020 from 21:23:19 to 21:42:27 GMT. The video starts on a night pass over the United Kingdom area, then travels past the major cities of Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Katowice, Kyiv, and Tehran. Towards the end of the video, there is a cluster of blue lights just south of Kuwait City; these are most likely boats. Long periods of darkness is typically due to the ISS passing over a body of water. Cities will often line the coast of the water bodies; this video shows the North Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf.

Betelgeuse Is Still Dimming

Near the end of 2019, astronomers watching the red giant Betelgeuse noted how much the star had dimmed, continuing to steadily fade for months.
It’s a variable star, and it’s known to get dimmer and brighter, but the big surprise is that it’s still continuing to dim, recently passing magnitude 1.56 and still getting dimmer. This is unprecedented in the decades that astronomers have been watching the star.
The world’s biggest telescopes are on the case, and the European Southern Observatory released dramatic new images of Betelguese, resolving features on the star’s surface and surrounding area showing how it’s dramatically changed over the course of 2019.

How The Fabric Of Spacetime Was Rocked By The Largest-Ever Neutron Star Merger
Published 17th February 2020
For the second-time ever, LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) detected gravitational waves from a neutron star collision. In fact, these particular gravitational waves were the result of a collision between the most massive neutron star pair ever witnessed.
This isn't LIGO's first encounter with gravitational waves. The observatory is famous for the first-ever detection of gravitational waves back in 2015, from a black hole merger. And then LIGO detected its first-ever gravitational waves from a neutron star merger in 2017, so this new 2019 data is only the second melding of neutron stars that’s ever been observed.
And with this second observation of neutron stars colliding, scientists can get some answers on how these cosmic events affect our universe.
Find out more about why this collision is particularly special; how LIGO documented it; and how knowledge surrounding cosmic events like this can help us better understand how our Earth came to be.

Intelligent Disclosure | UAP Crash Retrievals: Public Statements From TTSA Members
Streamed & Published 18th February 2020
The subject of UFOs, or UAPs nowadays, is definitely easier to talk about in public forums, and even appears now on national broadcast television. Much of this is due to the efforts of To the Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences (TTSA), headed by Tom DeLonge and staffed by scientists and intelligence community personnel such as Hal Puthoff, Luis Elizondo, Christopher Mellon, and others. What many people don’t realize is the extent to which members of this organization – and several individuals who have been very close to them over the years – have made a series of provocative public statements attesting to the reality not just of UFO/UAP, but to the recovery of crashed or landed objects by the U.S. military, and apparently by militaries from other nations. When taken together, these statements paint a very consistent picture. The reality of crash retrievals of UFO/UAP has been an open secret for these individuals, and today it’s clearly not even a secret. Richard and Tracey highlight some of the key statements by these individuals and discuss them.

The size of the orbits are all to scale, but the size of the planets are not. For example, Jupiter is actually 11x larger than Earth, but that scale makes Earth-sized planets almost invisible (or Jupiters annoyingly large). The orbits are all synchronized such that Kepler observed a planet transit every time it hits an angle of 0 degrees (the 3 o'clock position on a clock).
