NASA's Insight Probe Senses Hundreds Of 'Marsquakes'

The US space agency-led probe has detected over 450 significant seismic events since touching down in 2018.

None are particularly big - at most, they're only 3 to 4 on the magnitude scale, which you might feel if you were standing directly above the tremors.

The quakes' size and frequency is actually not that dissimilar to the UK.

The important message though to take away from the first detailed reports on the progress of the InSight mission is that Mars is far from being a dull, dead planet; it's an active one, says principal investigator Bruce Banerdt.

Surprise! There's More Water On Jupiter Than Anyone Thought

Jupiter appears to have more water than anyone expected.

Newly released data from NASA's Juno probe shows that water may make up about 0.25% of the molecules in the atmosphere over Jupiter's equator. While that doesn't sound like much, the calculation is based on a prevalence of water's components, hydrogen and oxygen, three times more than at the sun. The new measurements Juno obtained are much higher than a previous mission suggested.

Jupiter's magnetic field is created by currents in the liquid metallic hydrogen deep in the planet. The field is quite complex and does not align at all with the rotational axis of the planet. The pole near to the rotational axis appears more as a ring than a point.

Oregon Police Capture ‘Sound of UFO’ In 1981

There aren't that many audio encounters of UFOs — that's what makes this sighting above the Columbia River near St. Helens, Oregon in 1981 unique. We have several minutes of police radio where officers discuss a bright luminous object "like the sun" and better yet — they record a strange sound it is emitting.

J. Allen Hynek reviewed the case and called it a "total puzzle," and analysts concluded the noise does not occur in nature.

This is hardly the only UFO sighting in the Portland area — there are several more worth discussing.

If any UFOs proved to be extra-terrestrial it would be one of the most important events in human history. Yet there has long been a taboo in modern society on taking UFOs seriously, which has blocked any systematic science to try to determine what they are. Skeptics will say that is because UFOs do not exist, but the US Navy has recently confirmed that they do, and is making an official policy change to reflect this fact, from ignoring its pilots’ UFO encounters to requiring them to file reports. Yet even with the Navy’s revelation,
the UFO taboo remains so strong that the scientific community continues to show no interest in whether or not UFOs are ETs. In this talk Alexander Wendt argues that the UFO taboo is incoherent and unjustified, and proposes a crowd-funded science of UFOs as a way of beginning to learn more about these elusive phenomena. Alexander Wendt received his Ph.D. in political science from the
University of Minnesota in 1989. He subsequently taught at Yale, Dartmouth, and the University of Chicago before moving to The Ohio State University in 2004. His research interests center on international relations, where he is one of the most cited scholars in the field, and the philosophy of social science. He is the author of two books, Social Theory of International Politics (Cambridge, 1999), which won the “Best Book of the Decade” award from the International Studies Association in 2006; and Quantum Mind and Social Science (Cambridge, 2015), which hasn’t won anything yet.

The ability to send a space probe beyond the Voyager probes, through the interstellar medium and towards the distant stars, has long been the ambition of both the science fiction literature and a small community of advocates that have argued for a broader and deeper vision of space exploration that goes outside of our Solar System.
In the previous decades, much research has been conducted into the problem of interstellar flight, although little consideration has been given to intergalactic flight. In this paper, we discuss both. In particular, we discuss some intriguing observations from the fields of special and general relativity theory, cosmology and quantum mechanics to reach some philosophical conclusions about the nature of the Universe, and the role of human beings within it. In particular, the limitations of the speed of light, the vast scale of the Universe which appears to be unnecessarily large for our use, and the probabilistic nature of the quantum world. We seek to answer the questions:
(a) Can we travel to the nearby stars?
(b) Can we travel to other galaxies?
(c) is the purpose of the Universe merely to serve the perpetual astonishment of astronomers?
Finally, we consider the possibility of inter-dimensional flight external to our Universe, among a Multiverse or to a Hyperspace beyond.

She has always had a few consciousness memories from those experiences; the most vivid memory is that her “guide” (head of abduction crew), said, “We are from your future.” She knows he might have been lying but her investigations, research, and subsequent experiences, indicate he was not. After many decades, she has now reached a point of certain knowledge, that at least some UFO occupants are Future Humans.
One UFO encounter was aboard what appeared to be a starship. Another encounter was in a cabin on Eagle Lake, Ontario. A membrane was taken from her on one of those encounters. She always jokes that she wants it back.
In 1981, Diane underwent hypnotic regression with Dr. R. Leo Sprinkle, at the University of Wyoming, and she remembered many details of her childhood encounter. She has always had specific conscious memories, too. Diane has written 5 books over the years; her new book, was published February 1, 2020, is entitled Future Humans and the UFOs, Time for New Thinking.

Star Tsar: Regarding the Oregon Police Capture ‘Sound of UFO’ In 1981, published 20th February 2020.

J.Allen Hynek was completely puzzled about these sounds. They were not natural to him, but artificial.
Interestingly enough, he did not know of any other UFO case to compare with. (1981).
Its unfortunate that Hynek never investigated the Meier case. He may have been distracted by the intelligence community at the time.
Similarly, Jacques Vallee never investigated the Meier case.

In my estimation the sounds have similarities to the Billy Meier beamship sounds back in 1976.
When you listen to the Oregon UFO sound and then the Meier UFO sound, there is a similarity.

The amplitude of these frequencies was also constantly changing, whereby the dominance alternated.

Detecting Exoplanets Through Their Exoauroras

At present, scientists can only look for planets beyond our Solar System using indirect means. Depending on the method, this will involve looking for signs of transits in front of a star (Transit Photometry), measuring a star for signs of wobble (Doppler Spectroscopy), looking for light reflected from a planet’s atmosphere (Direct Imaging), and a slew of other methods.

Based on certain parameters, astronomers are then able to determine whether a planet is potentially-habitable or not. However, a team of astronomers from the Netherlands recently released a study in which they describe a novel approach for exoplanet-hunting: looking for signs of aurorae. As these are the result of interaction between a planet’s magnetic field and a star, this method could be a shortcut to finding life!

To break it down, interactions between a magnetic field and the charged particles that are regularly emitted by a star (aka. solar wind) are what cause aurorae. Moreover, the presence of this phenomenon produces radio waves that have a distinct signature that can be detected by radio observatories here on Earth. This is precisely what the Netherlands-based astronomers did using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR).

This Massive Black Hole Is Blasting A Jet at 99% The Speed Of Light

Jets of particles appear to be streaming from the center of the supermassive black hole M87* faster than the speed of light. But how could that be the case??!

For the first time ever, Chandra X-ray Observatory observations show that sections of a jet are moving at greater than 99 percent the speed of light. A jet is a cloud of high-speed, high energy particles spewed out from the center of a black hole. And in this case, the black hole in question is M87*.

M87* exists in the center of the enormous elliptical galaxy Messier 87, and is roughly 55 million light-years away. Astronomers have been observing the supermassive black hole for some time now, watching M87*’s jet of material for years in different wavelengths including radio, optical and x-ray.

And just last year, the Event Horizon Telescope captured the first-ever image of a black hole: an image of M87*, which helped contribute to the black holes fame.

Astronomers have announced that M87* has now been observed shooting jets of physical material out into space at extreme speeds that might break the cosmic speed limit.

So how fast is the material actually moving and what causes the jets in the first place?

Given time, the photons will be stretched so far that we won't be able to detect the galaxy at all.

When a massive star dies in a supernova, the explosion is only the beginning of the end. Most of the stellar matter is thrown far and wide, but the star’s iron-filled heart remains behind. This core packs as much mass as two Suns and quickly shrinks to a sphere that would span the length of Manhattan. Crushing internal pressure — enough to squeeze Mount Everest to the size of a sugar cube — fuses subatomic protons and electrons into neutrons.

Astronomers know that much about how neutron stars are born. Yet exactly what happens afterwards, inside these ultra-dense cores, remains a mystery. Some researchers theorize that neutrons might dominate all the way down to the centre. Others hypothesize that the incredible pressure compacts the material into more exotic particles or states that squish and deform in unusual ways.

Now, after decades of speculation, researchers are getting closer to solving the enigma, in part thanks to an instrument on the International Space Station called the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER).

If you're up early any morning during March, you'll want to go out and look toward the east to catch a lovely grouping of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The three planets are visible before dawn throughout the month.

At the beginning of March they form a line, with Mars located above Jupiter. But each morning as the month goes on, Mars appears to get closer to the giant planets.

On the 17th, 18th and 19th, an increasingly slim crescent Moon joins the three planets in a celestial quartet. Mars then passes just beneath Jupiter on the 19th through the 21st, before continuing on its way, ending the month just beneath Saturn.

SETI@home is a distributed computing project where volunteers contribute their CPU resources to analyze radio data from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

Run by the Berkeley SETI Research Center since 1999, SETI@home has been a popular project where people from all over the world have been donating their CPU resources to process small chunks of data, or "jobs", for interesting radio transmissions or anomalies. This data is then sent back to the researchers for analysis.

NASA Curiosity Project Scientist Ashwin Vasavada guides this tour of the rover's view of the Martian surface.

This panorama showcases "Glen Torridon," a region on the side of Mount Sharp that Curiosity is exploring. The panorama was taken between Nov. 24 and Dec. 1, 2019, when the Curiosity team was out for the Thanksgiving holiday. Since the rover would be sitting still with few other tasks to do while it waited for the team to return and provide its next commands, the rover had a rare chance to image its surroundings several days in a row without moving.

Composed of more than 1,000 images and carefully assembled over the ensuing months, the larger version of this composite contains nearly 1.8 billion pixels of Martian landscape.

The Great Pyramid Trial Passages: New Ancient Astronomy Hypothesis

The Great Pyramid Trial Passages are a true mystery of the Giza Plateau, but a new paper may have solved the problem!

A new paper has been released by David Ian Lightbody in the Journal of Ancient Egyptian Architecture concerning the Trial Passages of Giza, long thought to be a test run for the building of the Great Pyramid.

The new hypothesis by Lightbody is a bright insight, giving a new purpose to the so-called Trial Passages, the chambers and corridors that were dug directly into the bedrock, just east of the Great Pyramid. Lightbody claims that they could, in actual fact be a place to observe the northern stars.

So what exactly are these Trial Passages? For those that don’t know, I made a video about them two years ago - https://youtu.be/wcSsjBOL1fA - and experts believe they were built around the same time as the Great Pyramid. The inclinations and dimensions of the passages are extremely similar to those of the Great Pyramid, and all on a north-south alignment.

Flinders Petrie believed they were a replica or trial version of the internal passages of the Great Pyramid’s descending passageway, where it intersects with the ascending passage – a way to test to see if the plugging mechanism in the Great Pyramid would work.

But no granite plug blocks were found inside the Trial Passages and there is also the problem of a tall vertical shaft at the ascending passage and descending passage junction within the Trial Passages. Such a vertical shaft is apparently not there inside the Great Pyramid. So it is likely that the Trial Passages are not a replica of the Great Pyramid internal shafts, unless of course the pyramid architect changed his mind and decided not to incorporate the vertical shaft. Either that or the vertical shaft inside the Great Pyramid has still not been discovered.

Some say that the Trial Passages were part of a smaller pyramid structure on the Giza plateau, one that is no longer there, and as we have seen in previous videos, especially the writings of 18th century explorer Richard Pococke, there were more, smaller pyramids on the Giza plateau that are no longer there.

All the ideas about the Trial Passages do seem to fall down in the detail, but now there is a new hypothesis that the Trial Passages were actually built to observe the circumpolar stars, something originally mentioned by Glen Dash. Lightbody takes the idea a stage further and says that the Passages were designed and intended to be used to establish an accurate, astronomy-based north-south alignment for the construction of the Great Pyramid.

In the background of our webcam, you can clearly see the highest and very active Eurasian volcano – Klyuchevskaya Sopka, located in a small village of Kamchatka. The height of the volcano is approximately 4649 – 4850 m.

The powerful volcano, shown by our online camera, has appeared about 7000 years ago. This giant has continued to grow, being covered with new layers.

In the level of activity, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, where the live stream is from, takes the second place after the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The name of the volcano in our webcam was given by the town of Klyuchi and the Klyuchyovka River located nearby.

Klyuchevskaya Sopka is rich in geothermal springs.

The volcano shown by the online camera is located in the Klyuchevskaya Group of Volcanoes, Far East Kamchatka volcanic region. Sopka, together with more than 120 volcanoes of Kamchatka is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

All volcanoes of the Kamchatka Territory, as also Klyuchevskaya Sopka, which shown online, included in the list of natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The external view of the volcano resembles a regular shape ice cone with a crater up to 600 m in diameter. The base of the Klyuchevskaya Sopka cone reaches 15 km. The titan has more than 70 minor craters formed recently.

Observation of the volcano in our live camera began in 1697. Over the past 300 years, more than 50 eruptions have been recorded. Only in the 20th century, Klyuchevskaya Sopka was activated 15 times! The giant constantly throws out ashes. Serious eruptions happen once every 25 years.

The settlement of Klyuchi, with Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano in our webcam, is located in the center of Kamchatka Krai, 390 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, where there is also our online camera.

There are two volcanoes in the Klyuchi village: Klyuchevskaya Sopka, where the live stream is taking place and another active Shiveluch volcano (about 3300 m high), located 45 kilometers to the north.

In the Klyuchi village, there is the Institute of Volcanology, operating since 1935.

Comet Atlas Is Plunging Toward The Sun

Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4) is coming and the sun is waiting. In late May, the comet will dip inside the orbit of Mercury, passing only 0.25 AU from the sun. No one knows what will happen when the comet's icy core is exposed to solar heat at point blank range.

"ATLAS is a bit of a wildcard, and there's a spectrum of possibilities as it nears the sun," says Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. "At one extreme, it could simply crumble away in the coming weeks, and at the other extreme it could brighten up tremendously. It has an unusually small perihelion distance inside of Mercury's orbit, which bodes well for getting those frozen gases fizzing furiously."

At the moment Comet ATLAS is beyond the orbit of Mars. Even at that great distance, it is already brightening, shooting up 100-fold since the beginning of February. Currently, it looks like a fuzzy star of 11th magnitude in the Big Dipper--an easy target for backyard telescopes.

Observations of nearby galaxies by Edwin Hubble nearly a century ago have taught us that the universe is expanding, and that it must have been much hotter at early times. Observations at radio wavelengths have led to the detection of the cosmic microwave background, radiation left over from this early phase. Precise observations of this radiation have provided us with a snapshot of the universe around the time when the first atoms formed, only a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang. Rather remarkably, the small fluctuations observed in the cosmic microwave background radiation teach us that their seeds were created when the universe was only fractions of a second old. Professor Flauger will review what we have learned about the early universe and what we may hope to learn in the coming years.

Raphael Flauger is a professor at the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, and his research interests range from phenomenological questions in cosmology and particle physics to formal questions in quantum field theory and string theory. Currently, he is interested in extracting clues about fundamental physics from cosmological observations.

t was the autumn of 1846, and John Herschel (1792-1871), the British astronomer and natural philosopher, was not sleeping well. He had just put his foot into the century’s most acrimonious astronomical dispute, and now he was being abused by those on both sides of the matter – his British colleagues on the one hand, and French astronomers and their European allies on the other. By the 1840s, Herschel, who was first knighted and later made a baronet by Queen Victoria, was one of the astronomical community’s leading lights. As the son of William Herschel (1738-1822) – the musician-turned-astronomer who had discovered the first planet in recorded history and neatly doubled the size of the solar system – John had inherited his father’s massive telescopes and method of sweeping the night sky for new objects beyond the solar system. He had also inherited and extended his father’s legacy to become the de facto spokesman of Victorian science. John Herschel’s treatise on the scientific life, A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1830), was a contemporary bestseller, and influenced a generation of thinkers who followed after him, from John Stuart Mill to Charles Darwin. Indeed, as the historian of science Walter F (later Susan Faye) Cannon quipped in 1961, being scientific in the Victorian era meant simply to ‘be as much like [John] Herschel as possible’.

But, for a few weeks in late 1846, even John Herschel didn’t want to be John Herschel. French astronomers had just announced another new planet beyond the one that Herschel Senior had discovered back in 1781. Whereas William Herschel’s planet (known today as Uranus) had been an accidental, serendipitous discovery, the location of this new one had been mathematically predicted by the French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier (1811-77). Shortly thereafter, this prediction was confirmed by observation at the Berlin Observatory on the evening of 23 September 1846. The new planet was the first celestial body detected by mathematical analysis, a stunning achievement for mathematical physics and for Isaac Newton’s gravitational synthesis.

As of yesterday, the Costco in Redding, California, was completely out of toilet paper, paper towels, and bottled water was being rationed. How soon till the store shelves are completely cleaned out? Countless factors are converging to fuel a perfect storm of collapse, our former way of life is unraveling by the day. Can we still correct our course before impact?
We must never underestimate our personal power to affect the equation for the better. Each and every individual that our collective efforts helps to awaken matters more than we can fully comprehend. All are needed in the critical battle to wake populations to what is coming, we must make every day count. Share credible data from a credible source, make your voice heard.

The image of the "controlled burn" linked below was taken last night from my backyard on the east side of Lake Shasta, California. The fire spread quickly because there were many separate points of ignition, all of them started by a US Forest Service helicopter dropping fire starter bomblets. The extent of the fires is actually much larger than this image reveals. Question, does this ridge of blazing fires in the photo below look like a “controlled burn” to you? Is this how the US Forest Service claims to be protecting our remaining forests from wildfires? By burning the forests down ahead of time so that we no longer need to worry about forest fires? It is truly sickening to see so much habitat intentionally set ablaze under the facade of “managing forests”. I have personally managed (in the field) six large habitat restoration projects on the opposite side of Shasta Lake from the fire shown in the image below. Three of the projects I managed were carried out working with the State of California, three more of the projects I managed were with the US Department of Agriculture. I have personally carried out dozens of controlled burns on forest lands. Setting a forest understory on fire without weeks or months of preparation in the understory to be burned will kill many or most of the trees. Once the trunks are exposed to excessive heat, the trees will die, even if the crowns of the trees don’t burn.. Further, consider this so called “controlled burn” has been carried out after the driest and warmest February ever recorded in this region. No matter what excuse the US Forest Service provides for such destructive burns, this activity is not for the overall good of Earth's habitat that yet remains functional.

In the case of a star known as HD74423, it was amateur astronomers who first spotted the anomaly in data captured by NASA's latest planet-hunting space satellite TESS. What they didn't realize was that they were looking at an entirely unknown type of star -- the first of its kind.

This star of interest, located about 1,500 light-years from Earth, was flagged to the astronomy community -- but astronomers didn't understand it either.

Nigerian Astrophysicist Identifies Possible Case Of Rings Around An Exoplanet

Rings have not yet been discovered around exoplanets despite their prevalence around the giant planets of the solar system. However, an international team of researchers, led by Babatunde Akinsanmi (PhD student at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto) found statistical evidence that indicates that the exoplanet HIP 41378 f is similar to Uranus with a ring system around it, inclined by about 25 degrees, and extending from 1.05 to 2.59 times the diameter of the planet.

The work now revealed had the main objective of explaining the unexpectedly low density of the exoplanet HIP 41378 f making it seem as though it is made from cotton candy.

The ultra-hot giant exoplanet WASP-76b orbits the star WASP-76, located some 390 light-years away in the constellation of Pisces. This video shows the orbit of this strange planet around its host star.

Like the Moon on its orbit around the Earth, WASP-76b is ‘tidally locked’: it takes as long to rotate around its axis as it does to go around the star. On its day side temperatures climb above 2400 degrees Celsius, high enough to vaporise metals. Strong winds carry iron vapour to the cooler night side where it condenses into iron droplets.

The Lunar Gateway is a small space station in a loosely bound orbit near the moon, that can act as a staging site for mission to both the Moon and Mars. Up till now the plan was to have Orion dock there and take a lander to the surface of the moon, but I speculate that the new plan will involve Boeing launching the whole mission on 2 Upgraded SLS rockets.

British Police Helicopters Encounter UFOs & Film Them

Military footage of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) is widely known to have come from the US, Chile and Mexico. But what you may not know is British military helicopters encountered — and filmed — anomalous objects twice over the span of a decade. It occurred in the same general patch of sky above the waters of the unforgiving Bristol Channel.

Buried in the UK Ministry of Defence's declassified UFO files is a reference to the first of the sightings, in 2008. The crew reported it as "flying saucer shaped," and the police department backed up their account, calling them "very experienced" observers.

Eight years later, in 2016, British NPAS disclosed a second encounter above the channel and declassified 8 minutes of footage. They said the spherical object only was visible on infrared, and doubted it could've been a balloon because it was flying into the wind approximately 1,000 feet above the water. Crew also doubted it was a drone, saying their helicopter couldn't keep up with it.

Mexican Air Force: ‘We Are Not Alone’

On March 5, 2004, the Mexican Secretariat of Defense filmed 11 unidentified objects on its FLIR (forward looking infrared). The crew reported the UFOs at an altitude near that of their plane, 11,500 feet, and later told news reporters it felt as if they were surrounded. "I believe they could feel we were pursuing them," the plane's captain later said, according to an Associated Press article.

But, were the objects really anomalous? Or were they a trick of the eye from distant oil wells showing up on infrared? And what about the odd radar returns that prompted the crew to claim "we are not alone"? We will discuss these questions in today's episode.

NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will search for planets outside our solar system toward the center of our Milky Way galaxy, where most stars are. Studying the properties of exoplanet worlds will help us understand what planetary systems throughout the galaxy are like and how planets form and evolve.

Combining WFIRST's findings with results from NASA's Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) missions will complete the first planet census that is sensitive to a wide range of planet masses and orbits, bringing us a step closer to discovering habitable Earth-like worlds beyond our own.

The winter remained harsh in the northern hemisphere throughout February with even more cold and snowfall records broken.

70 villages in southeastern Turkey were buried under 20 feet of snow after a powerful blizzard. Residents were left without power and water as they also struggled to dig their way out. Furthermore, two avalanches killed 41 in the eastern part of the country, while a 5.7 magnitude earthquake killed 8 people in the southeast... That's quite a lot of extreme events in a single region.

Haji Omaran, a town on the mountainous Iraq-Iran border, also experienced exceptionally heavy snowfall, with roads blocked and cars buried in the snow. Saudi Arabia also got its share of unusual cold weather (for the desert!) as the temperature dropped to -5°C.

Last but not least, Taiwan's highest peak of Yushan and nearby counties were hit by the heaviest snowfall in two decades, whilst Himachal Pradesh's capital received the highest snowfall in eight years.

Heavy rain continued breaking records around the globe: 2 feet of rain in 24 hours in Fiordland, New Zealand; 5 dead and hundred displaced in Kenya; a month's worth of rain in 3 hours in São Paulo, Brazil; rainfall 400% above normal in Mississippi; hundreds evacuated in Northern Argentina due to widespread flooding, while western Washington got hit by historic flooding and landslides... and that's just to mention some of the most significant events.

At least seven people were killed across Europe by Storm Ciara, heavy rain and strong winds shut down transport and left hundreds of thousands without power. And storm Dennis left its mark in the UK, dumping a month's worth of rain in 48 hours with 91mph winds.

Meteor fireballs also gave quite a show this month, sightings on the rise... at least for now.

When NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft sailed past Pluto in 2015, it captured an image of the dwarf planet’s heart-shaped geography. But while it was there, New Horizons also caught a glimpse of Pluto’s dark side.

An image of the back of the dwarf planet shows black ripples of rock exactly opposite Sputnik Planitia, the basin that makes up the left lobe of Pluto’s heart. Now, researchers report that those ripples could be evidence that Pluto has a 93-mile-thick ocean sandwiched between its crust and its core. A Full Pink Supermoon Is Rising

April’s full Moon rises on the night of Tuesday, April 7. Traditionally called the Pink Moon, this full Moon will also be a spectacular Supermoon. The Moon will be at its closest point to us all year, making it appear up to 30% larger and 14% brighter. The Moon will be visible after sunset and reach peak illumination on April 7, at 18:08 UTC (10:35 p.m. EDT).

A Full Pink Supermoon Is Rising
Don't expect it to look particularly pink. It is named after pink flowers called wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and become widespread throughout the U.S. and Canada this time of the year.

A pulsar has just confirmed another piece of the general relativity puzzle Einstein predicted, and it’s the first real detection of an effect known as ‘frame dragging.’ And it’s kind of a big deal.

Frame dragging, or lense-thirring, basically states that spacetime will churn like honey around a rotating body with gravitational mass. We've seen traces of the effect before around the Earth, but we're fairly gravitationally tiny, so the effect was hardly definitive.

Enter the pulsar in question. In January 2020, scientists published their observations of just such a special case. The scientists watched a binary star system with some unusual qualities. One star is a white dwarf about the size of the Earth but much chunkier, about 300,000 times the density. And this white dwarf is spinning so fast it completes a rotation in a matter of minutes. That mass and speed means it drags space-time around it much more strongly than Earth does.

This system moves so comparatively quickly that we can literally observe its evolution, in this case using the Parkes and UTMOST radio telescopes in Australia. Their orbit has drifted slightly over time, and the only possible explanation is frame dragging.

So what does all this mean?

Frame dragging is a predicted phenomenon in general relativity, whereby a rotating mass drags the surrounding spacetime around with it. Venkatraman Krishnan et al. analyzed timing observations of PSR J1141-6545, a young pulsar in a binary orbit with a white dwarf. Modeling the arrival times of the radio pulses showed a long-term drift in the orbital parameters. After considering possible contributions to this drift, they concluded that it is dominated by frame dragging (the Lense-Thirring effect) of the rapidly spinning white dwarf. These observations verify a prediction of general relativity and provide constraints on the evolutionary history of the binary system.

Any object with mass warps the space-time around it, in much the same way as a heavy object deforms a stretched elastic sheet, explained study leader Ignazio Ciufolini of the Universitá di Lecce in Italy. “This is not just an evolution, but a revolution,” says Avery Broderick, leader of the EHT Initiative at Perimeter Institute, where he holds the Delaney Family John Archibald Wheeler Chair, and an associate faculty member at the University of Waterloo.

Broderick and his colleagues developed the tools to extract the data from the EHT observations and characterize the violent inner life of the quasar. Using these new computational tools, they produced geometric models that correspond to the quasar’s motion over a week-long EHT observation period.

US Army: Ancient Bases Under Earth Are 'Relaying' Something Into Space

Not widely known about, Project 8200 was an effort within the US Army's remote viewing unit to verify claims of subterranean extraterrestrial bases made by CIA analyst Pat Price in the 1970s.

*We obtained every '82 to '86-era declassified file of Project 8200, most of which were never officially reported to their higher-ups in the intelligence community. This is what the episode covers.*

What they show are the apparent confirmation by several other gifted remote viewers that a "network" of underground bases exists across the world for the purpose of "relaying" something into space.

As elite viewer Joseph McMoneagle and Atwater discuss in these tapes, Project 8200 data suggests the locations relay information to a "deep space" platform of unknown origin, sitting on a sort of tether to Earth. It is not suggested in the file, but after review, we think it's reasonable to ask if a Lagrange point (positions in space the Sun and the Earth's gravity create islands of stability) explains why the object McMoneagle sees remains "fixed" there.

The deep space platform is described as ancient but with new technology. Other viewers describe the bases as a strange mix of natural and artificial formations.

Why haven't we found dozens of exomoons yet? With planets as small as the Moon having been detected by NASA's Kepler Mission, it's fair to wonder why we only know of a single exomoon candidate to date. Despite the lack of moon detections, there are actually hundreds of known planets that wobble around, a tell-tale sign that a moon could be present. Unfortunately, these wobbles can also be caused by other planets and so in a new research appear Prof Kipping and Alex Teachey have re-visitted the theory behind exomoons and come up with a new trick to help us discern between the two - impossible moons.

For The First Time, Scientists Have Directly Measured Wind Speed Of A Nearby Brown Dwarf

For the first time, scientists have directly measured wind speed on a brown dwarf, an object larger than Jupiter (the largest planet in our solar system) but not quite massive enough to become a star. To achieve the finding, they used a new method that could also be applied to learn about the atmospheres of gas-dominated planets outside our solar system.

Described in a paper in the journal Science, the work combines observations by a group of radio telescopes with data from NASA's recently retired infrared observatory, the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Officially named 2MASS J10475385+2124234, the target of the new study was a brown dwarf located 32 light-years from Earth — a stone's throw away, cosmically speaking. The researchers detected winds moving around the planet at 1,425 mph (2,293 kph). For comparison, Neptune's atmosphere features the fastest winds in the solar system, which whip through at more than 1,200 mph (about 2,000 kph).

Measuring wind speed on Earth means clocking the motion of our gaseous atmosphere relative to the planet's solid surface. But brown dwarfs are composed almost entirely of gas, so "wind" refers to something slightly different. The upper layers of a brown dwarf are where portions of the gas can move independently. At a certain depth, the pressure becomes so intense that the gas behaves like a single, solid ball that is considered the object's interior. As the interior rotates, it pulls the upper layers — the atmosphere —along so that the two are almost in synch.

In their study, the researchers measured the slight difference in speed of the brown dwarf's atmosphere relative to its interior. With an atmospheric temperature of over 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit (600 degrees Celsius), this particular brown dwarf radiates a substantial amount of infrared light. Coupled with its close proximity to Earth, this characteristic made it possible for Spitzer to detect features in the brown dwarf's atmosphere as they rotate in and out of view. The team used those features to clock the atmospheric rotation speed.

To determine the speed of the interior, they focused on the brown dwarf's magnetic field. A relatively recent discovery found that the interiors of brown dwarfs generate strong magnetic fields. As the brown dwarf rotates, the magnetic field accelerates charged particles that in turn produce radio waves, which the researchers detected with the radio telescopes in the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in New Mexico.

A supernova brighter and larger than any other on record has been discovered by scientists at the Center for Astrophysics, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory.

A supernova is an extremely bright and powerful explosion of a dying, massive star that's at least five times the mass of the sun, according to NASA. Enormous stars burn large amounts of nuclear energy at their cores, which in turn makes the centers very hot. The heat generates outward pressure that prevents the star from collapsing.
However, that pressure has something to fight against as a star's gravity tries to compact it into the smallest, tightest ball possible. When a star runs out of energy, and thus heat, the pressure drops and gravity takes over. The star then collapses, creating shock waves that cause the outer part of the star to explode.

NASA Missions Study Shock Waves In Nova Explosion

Unprecedented observations of a nova outburst in 2018 by a trio of satellites, including NASA’s Fermi and NuSTAR space telescopes, have captured the first direct evidence that most of the explosion’s visible light arose from shock waves — abrupt changes of pressure and temperature formed in the explosion debris.

A nova is a sudden, short-lived brightening of an otherwise inconspicuous star. It occurs when a stream of hydrogen from a companion star flows onto the surface of a white dwarf, a compact stellar cinder not much larger than Earth.

The 2018 outburst originated from a star system later dubbed V906 Carinae, which lies about 13,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. Over time — perhaps tens of thousands of years for a so-called classical nova like V906 Carinae — the white dwarf’s deepening hydrogen layer reaches critical temperatures and pressures. It then erupts in a runaway reaction that blows off all of the accumulated material.

Fermi detected its first nova in 2010 and has observed 14 to date. Gamma rays the highest-energy form of light require processes that accelerate subatomic particles to extreme energies, which happens in shock waves. When these particles interact with each other and with other matter, they produce gamma rays. Because the gamma rays appear at about the same time as a nova's peak in visible light, astronomers concluded that shock waves play a more fundamental role in the explosion and its aftermath.

The Fermi and BRITE data show flares in both wavelengths at about the same time, so they must share the same source shock waves in the fast-moving debris.

Observations of one flare using NASA’s NuSTAR space telescope showed a much lower level of X-rays compared to the higher-energy Fermi data, likely because the nova ejecta absorbed most of the X-rays. High-energy light from the shock waves was repeatedly absorbed and reradiated at lower energies within the nova debris, ultimately only escaping at visible wavelengths.

Astronomers have proposed shock waves as a way to explain the power radiated by various kinds of short-lived events, such as stellar mergers, supernovae — the much bigger blasts associated with the destruction of stars — and tidal disruption events, where black holes shred passing stars. Further studies of nearby novae will serve as laboratories for better understanding the roles shock waves play in other more powerful and more distant events..

Comet breakups are a timely topic right now. The interstellar comet 2I/Borisov just broke into at least two pieces. And though that comet is speeding out of the Solar System, never to be seen again, most of them don’t leave the Solar System. Most of them orbit the Sun, and return to the inner Solar System again and again.

A new paper examines the potential hazard to Earth from comets that break into pieces. The author makes the case that comet breakups could have had a hand in shaping the ebb and flow of life on Earth. It could happen again.

In the deep history of the Solar System, there were many more comets than there are now. Nobody will ever know how many, but comets contain a lot of water ice, and scientists generally agree that one of the ways Earth got all its water is from a multitude of comet impacts over a vast period of time.

A 2019 paper looked at the modern threat that comets pose to Earth. It’s titled “The Hazard from Fragmenting Comets.” The paper’s published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, and the sole author is W.M. Napier of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, in Northern Ireland.

Comet Swan (C/2020 F8) Is Now In Outburst Mode

A new comet has been discovered, and in late May it will pass by the sun near the orbit of Mercury. No, it's not Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4), which is currently falling apart on a similar trajectory. Instead, this is Comet SWAN (C/2020 F8).

Michael Mattiazzo of Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia was discovered the comet on April 11, 2020, when he was looking at data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). Images taken by astronomers, confirm that the comet is bright (8th magnitude), green, and has a long tail.

SOHO's SWAN instrument was not designed to find comets. Its job is to survey the solar system for hydrogen. When the solar wind blows into a cloud of hydrogen-bearing compounds, the impact produces UV photons that SWAN can photograph.

"For SWAN to see a comet, it means the comet must be producing a fairly significant amount of hydrogen," explains Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. "This is usually in the form of water-ice."

"It's extremely likely that Comet SWAN is in 'outburst' mode," he continues. "That is, some major eruption happened to this otherwise small and faint comet, releasing a massive cloud of hydrogen-rich volatiles. SWAN is picking up on this sudden dump of hydrogen into the inner solar system."

If the outburst continues, Comet SWAN could become visible to the naked eye next month. Preliminary light curves suggest that it could reach 3rd magnitude--dim, but visible without optics. However, Battams, who correctly predicted the demise of Comet ATLAS, is not so sure. "I doubt that the comet will maintain its current impressive appearance, and will quite possibly fade away soon," he says. "But we've only been viewing it for a couple of days, so no one knows."

Comets are unpredictable, and that's what makes them worth watching. It is not yet clear if the hydrogen outbursts will affect the trajectory of comet SWAN. If the eruptions continue to occur on the comet, its path towards the Sun could change.

ESO's Very Large Telescope has observed a star dancing around the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The observations have revealed, for the first time, that the star’s orbit is shaped like a rosette and not like an ellipse.

Observations made with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) have revealed for the first time that a star, S2, orbiting the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way moves just as predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Most stars and planets have a non-circular orbit and therefore move closer and further away from the object they are rotating around. S2’s orbit precesses, meaning that the location of its closest point to the supermassive black hole changes with each turn, such that the next orbit is rotated with regard to the previous one, creating a rosette shape. This effect, known as Schwarzschild precession, had never before been measured for a star around a supermassive black hole.

This animation shows S2’s orbit around Sagitarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The precession movement is exaggerated for easier viewing.

Our search for planets around other stars, called exoplanets, has exploded within the last decade. We’ve now found exoplanets in the thousands. While the initial discoveries were mostly of Jupiter-like giant planets, the more recent ones have unraveled several Earth-sized worlds as well.

Earth-sized planets would mean the planet has a rocky surface and enough mass to hold on to an atmosphere. By that definition, Venus and Mars are also Earth-sized. What scientists are more interested in are Earth-like worlds, where life, as we know it, has the potential to exist.
