Swarm Probes Weakening Of Earth's Magnetic Field

Published 20th May 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/swarmprobesw.jpg

In an area stretching from Africa to South America, Earth's magnetic field is gradually weakening. This strange behaviour has geophysicists puzzled and is causing technical disturbances in satellites orbiting Earth. Scientists are using data from ESA's Swarm constellation to improve our understanding of this area known as the 'South Atlantic Anomaly.'

Earth's magnetic field is vital to life on our planet. It is a complex and dynamic force that protects us from cosmic radiation and charged particles from the Sun. The magnetic field is largely generated by an ocean of superheated, swirling liquid iron that makes up the outer core around 3000 km beneath our feet. Acting as a spinning conductor in a bicycle dynamo, it creates electrical currents, which in turn, generate our continuously changing electromagnetic field.

New Understanding Of Deep Earthquakes

Published 27th May 2020

Earthquakes that occur more than 300 kilometers below the Earth are poorly understood. UC Davis geophysicist Magali Billen modeled stresses in a sinking tectonic plate at a subduction zone. In this video, yellow regions on the sinking plate show where deep earthquakes are most likely to occur, because the plate is both strong and deforming rapidly. This work can explain why earthquakes cluster at certain depths and lead to a better understanding of the causes of deep earthquakes.

Red Sprites & Blue Jets Explained

Published 26th May 2020

Science of how red sprites and blue jets form over thunderstorms. Some of the greatest red sprites ever caught on camera with easy to understand explanations including a new discovery are highlighted in this video. Explore the colorful world of Transient Luminous Events including gigantic jets, elves, halos and more as they are initiated by massive horizontally extensive lightning flashes in thunderstorms far below.

On rare nights with clear visibility over powerful distant thunderstorms, you might be able to see and capture red sprites. Sprites are large scale electrical discharges occurring high above thunderstorms in the upper atmosphere. They are massive events, sometimes 50 kilometers tall by 50 kilometers wide. Sprites belong to a mysterious and colorful group of phenomenon called Transient Luminous Events, or TLEs. Other TLE’s include halos, Elves, trolls, secondary jets, Blue starters, Blue jets and the magnificent gigantic jets. But what exactly are these transient luminous Events, and how do they form?

In 2019 Hank teamed up with one of the most successful TLE photographers in the world, Paul Smith. Our objective was to simultaneously document TLEs from different locations to help US understand and CAPTURE them better. We didn’t know what we would find, if anything… But we never expected to DISCOVER a NEW TLE.

RED SPRITE DISCOVERY
Visual reports of Transient Luminous Events date back several centuries.
It wasn’t until 1989 that the first ones were accidentally caught on camera.
Years after discovery, they were named sprites for their spirit like nature.

BASIC PHYSICS:
In Hank's last video we showed how one lightning flash can abruptly change the electric field triggering a second lightning flash in a sort of domino effect. Sprites are also initiated by a large electric field change that occurs during a massive horizontally extensive lightning strike far below. These parent flashes transfer huge amounts of charge and are almost always positive in polarity… Meaning that the earth rapidly gains a net positive charge from the strike. But pools of positive charge near the tops of thunderstorm complexes also change, abruptly gaining negative charge.
This suddenly creates a powerful electric field between the tops of thunderstorms and a high concentration of positively charged ions existing 100 kilometers or so up into the lower ionosphere. It’s this new imbalance that can initiate a sprite.

BLUE JETS:
On occasion, a cloud flash will have one end of the leader exit the upper extent of the thunderstorm and propagate toward the upper atmosphere. The rarified air and low pressure of the upper atmosphere leads to a visible transformation in the leader as the ionization travels upward. This is how a blue jet forms, as well as gigantic jets.

SECONDARY JETS:
Sometimes a large sprite event can trigger a second TLE. We call these secondary jets. Secondary jets become visible near the tops of thunderstorms where Nitrogen excites in the blues or purples and extend upward to altitudes where Nitrogen excites more red. In a photograph of a sprite and secondary jet event, you can see the gradual transitioning from blues to reds as the pressure quickly decreases in altitude.

NEW TLE DISCOVERY
On May 25, 2019 Hank was documenting a vibrant sprite storm over Oklahoma and captured something Hank had never seen or heard of. After two large sprite events, a mysterious green afterglow appeared. It seemed as if the sprite had triggered a small Aurora. Early that next morning Hank called Paul to discuss the strange captures. He was the first to agree it was something new and hypothesized that it was likely oxygen being excited by powerful sprites. Keeping in the theme of sprites, trolls and elves, we are referring to these Green emissions from excited Oxygen in Sprite Tops as GhOSTs.

Dinosaur-Dooming Asteroid Struck Earth @ 'Deadliest Possible' Angle

Published 26th May 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/dinosaurdoom.jpg

New simulations from Imperial College London have revealed the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs struck Earth at the 'deadliest possible' angle.
The simulations show that the asteroid hit Earth at an angle of about 60 degrees, which maximised the amount of climate-changing gases thrust into the upper atmosphere.
Such a strike likely unleashed billions of tonnes of sulphur, blocking the sun and triggering the nuclear winter that killed the dinosaurs and 75 per cent of life on Earth 66 million years ago.
Drawn from a combination of 3-D numerical impact simulations and geophysical data from the site of the impact, the new models are the first ever fully 3-D simulations to reproduce the whole event—from the initial impact to the moment the final crater, now known as Chicxulub, was formed.

The 'Cow' Mystery Strikes Back: Two More Rare, Explosive Events Captured

Published 26th May 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/thecowmyster.jpg

The 'Cow' is not alone; with the help of W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii, astronomers have discovered two more like it—the 'Koala' and a similar mysterious bright object called CSS161010. This trio of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) appear to be relatives, all belonging to a highly-luminous family that has a track record for surprising astronomers with their fast, powerful bursts of energy.

The 'Koala,' which is a nickname derived from the tail end of its official name ZTF18abvkwla, suddenly appeared as a bright new source in the optical sky before disappearing within just a few nights. A team of astronomers at Caltech realized this behavior was similar to the 'Cow' and requested radio observations to see if the two were connected.

Study Unveils Properties Of Eleven Recently Discovered Pulsars

Published 26th May 2020

An international team of astronomers has conducted a detailed study of 11 pulsars recently discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The new research, presented in a paper published May 19 on arXiv.org, delivers essential information about the properties of these objects.

Pulsars are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars emitting a beam of electromagnetic radiation. They are usually detected in the form of short bursts of radio emission, however some of them are also observed using optical, X-ray and gamma-ray telescopes. To date, most pulsars have been discovered using the Parkes Observatory in Australia.

Astronomers Create Cloud Atlas For Hot, Jupiter-like Exoplanets

Published 27th May 2020

https://news.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/exoplanetclouds750px.jpg

Giant planets in our solar system and circling other stars have exotic clouds unlike anything on Earth, and the gas giants orbiting close to their stars — so-called hot Jupiters — boast the most extreme.

A team of astronomers from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom have now come up with a model that predicts which of the many types of proposed clouds, from sapphire to smoggy methane haze, to expect on hot Jupiters of different temperatures, up to thousands of degrees Kelvin.

Surprisingly, the most common type of cloud, expected over a large range of temperatures, should consist of liquid or solid droplets of silicon and oxygen, like melted quartz or molten sand. On cooler hot Jupiters, below about 950 Kelvin (1,250 degrees Fahrenheit), skies are dominated by a hydrocarbon haze, essentially smog.

The bigger issue might be the impact of continued M-flares on radio communications during launch time. Just for this purpose, I have included an updated set of 5-day outlook graphics, specifically to clarify the SpaceX launch environment conditions. Plus, see updates on the multiple solar storms and big solar flares our Sun has launched over the last couple days. Sunset In Space

Published 29th May 2020

If you've ever wondered what a sunset in space looks like, wonder no more. This video shows the sun setting from an altitude over 100,000ft, the shadow of the Earth becoming visible as the Sun dips below the horizon. As the Sun drops below the limb of the Earth, the layers of the atmosphere become visible, the Troposphere glowing a deep red/orange, the Stratosphere a pale shade of pink and the upper atmosphere a light blue fading off into the blackness of space. The full moon is visible and Venus can be seen as the Sun fades.

These shots were captured using a modified GoPro to withstand the extreme temperatures in the stratosphere at night and a space capable weather balloon. Launching a balloon to capture the sunset in space presents a number of unique problems. As the temperature drops without the Sun heating the balloon, the buoyant gases inside cool and contract resulting in a drop in lift. This means that rather than continuing to climb and eventually burst, the balloon begins to float and drift horizontally. Our tech team designed a custom cut down mechanism to be triggered once the Sun had set to ensure that we got the shots that we need safely.

Since shorter wavelengths are refracted more, it is the green light that we see above these objects. This is an atmospheric effect and would not be visible if the Earth had no atmosphere.

Black Hole Outburst Caught On Video

Published 29th May 2020

Astronomers have caught a black hole hurling hot material into space at close to the speed of light.

This flare-up was captured in a new movie from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory taken in 2018 and 2019.

The black hole and its nearby companion star are located in our Galaxy about 10,000 light years from Earth.

The black hole's strong gravity pulls material away from the companion star into a disk surrounding the black hole.

Some of this material is blasted away from the black hole in a pair of short beams of material, or jets.

These jets are moving at about 80% the speed of light, or about 500 million miles per hour.

Researchers estimate that about 400 million billion pounds of material have been blown away from the black hole in these two jets.

6IwTE_7wN4k

Astronomers have caught a black hole hurling hot material into space at close to the speed of light. This flare-up was captured in a new movie from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

The black hole and its companion star make up a system called MAXI J1820+070, located in our Galaxy about 10,000 light years from Earth. The black hole in MAXI J1820+070 has a mass about eight times that of the Sun. This makes it a so-called stellar-mass black hole, formed by the destruction of a massive star.

The companion star orbiting the black hole has about half the mass of the Sun. The black hole's strong gravity pulls material away from the companion star into an X-ray emitting disk surrounding the black hole.

Some of the hot gas in the disk will cross what is called the event horizon, or, the point of no return, and fall into the black hole. But some of it is also blasted away from the black hole in a pair of short beams of material, or jets. These jets are pointed in opposite directions, launched from outside the event horizon along magnetic field lines.

Using four observations obtained by Chandra in 2018 and 2019, astronomers were able to capture footage of this black hole's behavior.

Just how fast are the jets of material moving away from the black hole? From Earth's perspective, it looks as if the northern jet is moving at 60% the speed of light, while the southern one is traveling at an impossible-sounding 160% of light speed!

This is an example of superluminal motion, a phenomenon that occurs when something travels towards us near the speed of light, along a direction close to our line of sight. This means the object travels almost as quickly towards us as the light it generates, giving the illusion that the jet's motion is more rapid than the speed of light. In the case of MAXI J1820+070, the southern jet is pointing towards us and the northern jet is pointing away from us, so the southern jet appears to be moving faster than the northern one. The actual velocity of the particles in both jets is greater than 80% of the speed of light, which is, amazingly, about 500 million miles per hour.

“Alcohol in Space” is the first book on this topic and examines the history of alcohol in space, as well as dozens of companies and projects that are exploring the possibilities of alcohol production in space.
In his talk to the British Interplanetary Society, Carberry highlights many of the companies that are leading the world in the development of space alcohol including whiskey producers Ardbeg and Suntory who have sent experiments to ISS, analysing how whisky ages in microgravity. In addition, American beer giant, Budweiser, which has sent barley experiments to the International Space Station (ISS). “The production and consumption of alcohol has played a significant role in human society since the dawn of civilization,” stated author Chris Carberry. “Will this still hold true when humanity is exploring and settling the outer reaches of space?”

Strawberry Moon Eclipse

Published 31st May 2020

The crest of the Moon's full phase happens on June 5, 2020, at 19:12 UTC. Skywatchers around the world will have to catch a glimpse of the almost-full Moon on the evenings before and after the peak. At that night the Full Moon will be close to the red supergiant star Antares, brightest star in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion.

This year, the night of the Strawberry Moon will also see a penumbral lunar eclipse take place. During the maximum phase of the eclipse, space observers in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa may see the Moon's surface turn slightly darker than usual. The Penumbral Eclipse begins on June 5, at 17:45 UTC. Maximum Eclipse at 19:25 UTC. The Eclipse ends at 21:04 UTC.

It's a Full Moon meaning the Earth lies between the Sun and the Moon so the complete surface of the Moon is visible.

Each month's Full Moon has a name and a meaning, dating back to Native Americans. June's full Moon is called the Strawberry Moon because the short season during which strawberries can be harvested happens in June. However, strawberries aren't native in Europe. There, June's Ful Moon is called the "Rose Moon."

Venus Will Turn Into A "Ring Of Fire"

Published 2nd June 2020

Tomorrow, June 3rd, Venus will pass almost directly between the Earth and the Sun. This is having a strange effect on the planet's shape. It is like a 'Ring Of Fire'.

Why does Venus look like a ring?
The planet's nightside is facing Earth. Sunlight filtering through the edge of Venus’s carbon dioxide atmosphere forms a luminous ring around the dark disk.

Astronomers call this an "inferior conjunction of Venus," and it's one of the best in decades. At closest approach on June 3rd, Venus will be 29 arcminutes (about half a degree) from the center of the solar disk. Only twice since 1961 has Venus come closer–during the famous Venus Transits of 2004 and 2012.

Observing Venus at this time is dangerous. With the Sun just a fraction of a degree away, it is easy for stray sunlight to sneak into optical systems, damaging sensitive electronics and hurting human eyes. Only skilled observers taking careful precautions should attempt it.

In space, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) will monitor the conjunction using a coronagraph. In such a device, opaque disks block the glare of the sun, revealing nearby stars and planets. It’s a type of artificial solar eclipse.

Even SOHO will have some trouble, though. On June 3rd, Venus will be so close to the sun that it briefly dips behind the coronagraph’s opaque disks, hiding the moment of closest approach. Ground-based observers will have to try to fill in the gap.

Why Is Uranus Shooting Plasma Bubbles?

Published 6th May 2020

https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/PIA18182_hires.jpg

The atmosphere of Uranus is leaking gas into space. Scientists discovered the presence of a plasmoid while looking through Voyager 2 data. But what is a plasmoid and what does this development mean for the 7th planet from the Sun?

While leaky atmospheres are actually not that uncommon, this discovery is the first time a plasmoid has been detected in connection with Uranus. The data comes from the historic Voyager 2 trip to the icy planet in 1986, though scientists just realized the presence of the plasmoid, a pocket of atmospheric material emitting from Uranus by the planet's magnetic field, more than 2 decades later.

The data from the mission shows that Uranus ejected a mass of electrically excited gas roughly 30 times wider than Earth’s diameter.

But the discovery reveals more than just the fact that Uranus’ atmosphere is leaking—it also helps scientists better understand the planet’s mysterious twisted magnetic field.

The Atmosphere of Uranus Is Literally Leaking Gas Into Space
https://www.sciencealert.com/uranus-atmosphere-is-leaking-gas-into-space
It's the first time a plasmoid has been spotted in connection with an ice giant, and it doesn't just show us that Uranus' atmosphere is leaking. It's also revealing some of the dynamics of this planet's peculiar, twisted magnetic field.

Uranus blasted a gas bubble 22,000 times bigger than Earth
https://www.popsci.com/story/space/giant-belch-from-uranus/
Plasmoids are charged globs of atmosphere blown out into space when the solar wind whips around planets. Losing such blobs can dramatically transform a world over a long period of time, and studying them can provide insight into how planets live and die. Researchers have spotted them pinching off from various planets, but the magnetic belch Voyager 2 sailed through was a first for Uranus. “We expected that Uranus would likely have plasmoids; however, we didn't know exactly what they would look like,” DiBraccio says.

New Find Shows Uranus Loses Atmosphere to its Magnetic Field
https://www.universetoday.com/145521/new-find-shows-uranus-loses-atmosphere-to-its-magnetic-field/
Though Voyager only made a brief 60 second transit through the plasmoid bubble, the implied dimensions were stunning: with a cylindrical volume of 127,000 miles (204,000 kilometers) wide by 250,000 miles (400,000 kilometers) long, the bubble would stretch from Earth to the Moon.

Hot Stars That Are Plagued By Giant Magnetic Spots

Published 1st June 2020

Astronomers using ESO telescopes have discovered giant spots on the surface of extremely hot stars hidden in stellar clusters. This video offers a summary of the discovery.

bvzuviHxnIo

Astronomers using ESO telescopes have discovered giant spots on the surface of extremely hot stars hidden in stellar clusters, called extreme horizontal branch stars. This animation shows what one of these stars, and its giant whitish spot, might look like. The spot is bright, takes up a quarter of the star’s surface and is caused by magnetic fields. As the star rotates, the spot on its surface comes and goes, causing visible changes in brightness.

Note that the movement does not represent the rotation of the star: it mimics the movement of a camera observing the star up close.

Xo_MIeSzSrs

Spots on extreme horizontal branch stars (right) appear to be quite different from the dark sunspots on our own Sun (left), but both are caused by magnetic fields. The spots on these hot, extreme stars are brighter and hotter than the surrounding stellar surface, unlike on the Sun where we see spots as dark stains on the solar surface that are cooler than their surroundings. The spots on extreme horizontal branch stars are also significantly larger than sunspots, covering up to a quarter of the star’s surface. While sunspots vary in size, a typical size is around an Earth-size planet, 3000 smaller than a giant spot on an extreme horizontal branch star.

Researchers Discover A New Type Of Matter Inside Neutron Stars

Published 2nd June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/finnishresea.jpg

A Finnish research group has found strong evidence for the presence of exotic quark matter inside the cores of the largest neutron stars in existence. They reached this conclusion by combining recent results from theoretical particle and nuclear physics to measurements of gravitational waves from neutron star collisions.

All normal matter surrounding us is composed of atoms, whose dense nuclei, comprising protons and neutrons, are surrounded by negatively charged electrons. However, inside neutron stars, atomic matter is known to collapse into immensely dense nuclear matter in which the neutrons and protons are packed together so tightly that the entire star can be considered one single enormous nucleus.

Study Finds That Patterns Formed By Spiral Galaxies Show That The Universe May Have A Defined Structure

Published 1st June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/kstatestudyr.jpg

An analysis of more than 200,000 spiral galaxies has revealed unexpected links between spin directions of galaxies, and the structure formed by these links might suggest that the early universe could have been spinning, according to a Kansas State University study.

Lior Shamir, a K-State computational astronomer and computer scientist, presented the findings at the 236th American Astronomical Society meeting in June 2020. The findings are significant because the observations conflict with some previous assumptions about the large-scale structure of the universe.

Snowball's Chance In Earth & Early Signs Of Life

New research led by the University of St Andrews helps answer one of the most asked questions in geoscience, when did Earth start to become habitable to complex life?

The research, led by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) today addresses this by defining which came first, the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) or the Paleoproterozoic snowball Earth period. The relative timing of these global events is pivotal to understanding changes in atmospheric composition and climate conditions, and how the first signs of life on Earth began.

The Spanish Air Force has declassified 55 UFO cases — of those, just four have an "A" designation, meaning they were subject to lengthy investigation.

The first involved a transparent sphere with "Swedish-looking" occupants wearing divers' suits above the Canary Islands in 1976, we covered that here: https://youtu.be/KzMbc4CsCjs

The second of these “A cases” is even more unbelievable. We will cover this today.

In 1977, a carpenter, Juan Sillero, says a 20-meter wide saucer landed near his home outside Gallarta, Spain. He told investigators a craft came four other times, one of which he went onboard and interacted with beings that looked human. They told him they were there “to help Earth” because it was “going out of its orbit and tilting too much.”

After the craft left, on two different occasions, Juan heard fighter jets overhead.

How legitimate is Juan's story? And what did the Air Force conclude?

ASTERIA Is The Smallest Satellite To Detect An Exoplanet

Published 3rd June 2020

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/ASTERIA_CubeSat_space_telescope.jpg

About the size of a briefcase, the CubeSat was built to test new technologies but exceeded expectations by spotting a planet outside our solar system.

Long before it was deployed into low-Earth orbit from the International Space Station in Nov. 2017, the tiny ASTERIA spacecraft had a big goal: to prove that a satellite roughly the size of a briefcase could perform some of the complex tasks much larger space observatories use to study exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system. A new paper soon to be published in the Astronomical Journal describes how ASTERIA (short for Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics) didn't just demonstrate it could perform those tasks but went above and beyond, detecting the known exoplanet 55 Cancri e.

Scorching hot and about twice the size of Earth, 55 Cancri e orbits extremely close to its Sun-like parent star. Scientists already knew the planet's location; looking for it was a way to test ASTERIA's capabilities. The tiny spacecraft wasn't initially designed to perform science; rather, as a technology demonstration, the mission's goal was to develop new capabilities for future missions. The team's technological leap was to build a small spacecraft that could conduct fine pointing control -- essentially the ability to stay very steadily focused on an object for long periods.

UY Scuti - The Largest Star Ever Discovered

Published 11th May 2020

When considering star size, we are incredibly restricted with what we can't measure - the vast majority of the universe's stars lie outside of our galaxy, and are too far away to ever be measured. In spite of this, we have discovered some truly magnificent stars in our own backyard. Today, we will be looking at the biggest - UY Scuti. This magnificent titan of the cosmos is a staggering 2.3BN KM in diameter, and that is the least incredible of some of the numbers associated with it. Today, we will be analysing this star, and some of its close competition in the race for the largest star ever discovered.

Martian Moon Holds Clues To An Ancient Ring Around The Planet

Published 2nd June 2020

Out of all the moons of the Solar System, Deimos might be the least impressive. From the over 200 moons that populate our Solar System, the Martian satellite is one of the smallest, measuring at about only seven miles in diameter, and is severely misshapen with an uneven surface. Named after the Roman god of dread, Deimos is not anyone's idea of a vacation spot.

However, this moon may hold secrets about Mars' past and what the Red Planet may have looked like billions of years ago.

Martian Moon's Orbit Hints @ Ancient Rings Of Mars

Published 5th June 2020

Scientists from the SETI Institute and Purdue University have found that the only way to produce Deimos’s unusually tilted orbit is for Mars to have had a ring billions of years ago. While some of the more massive planets in our solar system have giant rings and numerous big moons, Mars only has two small, misshapen moons, Phobos and Deimos. Although these moons are small, their peculiar orbits hide important secrets about their past. A discussion with the SETI Institute's Matija Cuk.

Sagittarius, Black Holes & Formation Of The Solar System

Published 5th June 2020

Galaxies may look serene and otherworldly in all those NASA photos, but how they actually came into being was the total opposite.

A new study, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, has traced the influence these galactic crashes have had on the Milky Way, and found that one of them coincided with the birth of our Sun around 4.7 billion years ago. The study is based on data gathered by Gaia, a space observatory launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2013 to survey the stars of the Milky Way. As it looked onto the stars, Gaia discovered that the ripples caused by the Sagittarius galaxy crashing into the Milky Way triggered an uptick in star formation.

Just how complex the Milky Way actually is remained unknown until Gaia shed more light on it through 3D maps of the entire galaxy and the positions of its stars. The problem with previous conclusions about our galaxy’s star formation history is that they either focused on just the solar system and its close surroundings or were unable to isolate the star formation events that made the Milky Way what it is now.

Paul Salazar | Is There Extraterrestrial Life In The Universe?

Published 29th May 2020

Humankind has always wanted to know if we are alone in the universe, and there are many scientific efforts underway to determine if there is life anywhere else in the universe besides Earth. Some of the research takes place by sending space probes throughout the Solar System to see if we can find evidence of current or past life. Some of the research takes place as we discover and analyse exoplanets. Other research is more passive, listening for signals from anywhere in the universe, looking for intelligence in the signals. And of course, Earth has been transmitting signals into space for nearly 100 years. We don't have a complete answer yet, but we are pursuing this in a detailed way.

Paul Salazar aka Urban Astronomer guides us through these efforts.

Chance Of Finding Young Earth-like Planets Higher Than Previously Thought

Published 5th June 2020

https://scx2.b-cdn.net/gfx/news/hires/2020/exoplanet.jpg

Research from the University of Sheffield has found that the chance of finding Earth-like planets in their early stages of formation is much higher than previously thought.

The team studied groups of young stars in the Milky Way to see if these groups were typical compared to theories and previous observations in other star-forming regions in space, and to study if the populations of stars in these groups affected the likelihood of finding forming Earth-like planets.

The research, published in The Astrophysical Journal (https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ab8e39), found that there are more stars like the Sun than expected in these groups, which would increase the chances of finding Earth-like planets in their early stages of formation.

This Exoplanet Suddenly Disappeared From Space, Where Did It Go?

Published 1st June 2020

https://static01.nyt.com/images/2020/04/20/science/20PLANET/20PLANET-superJumbo.jpg

A planet discovered by Hubble suddenly vanished. So where did it go, and what does its disappearance mean for the study of planetary systems?

Fomaulhaut b, one of the first exoplanets to be directly imaged by telescopes, vanished in 2014—but new research may finally explain where it went.

The planet was observed orbiting the star Fomalhaut (hence the name Fomalhaut b). The Hubble Space Telescope was the first to spot Fomalhaut b in 2004 and then again in 2006 as just a moving dot around its star, even though Fomalhaut b was estimated to be as massive as three Jupiters and much brighter than other exoplanets, which tend to be too small to reflect enough light for us to see.

But new analysis of Hubble's observations of Fomalhaut b suggests that a planet may have never been there in the first place, and in fact, what Hubble captured was something entirely different.

For a number of years, a variety of independent investigators have participated in regular group expeditions in the American Southwest, gathering evidence and developing analyses based on their observations. Robert Hawthorne Jr. is a significant and active contributor to the Electric Universe Geology group. During EU2017: Future Science, the Thunderbolts conference held in Phoenix that August, his Ongoing Exhibit, "Ejecta From Upheaval Dome, Utah", was a Peer-to-Peer Sharing feature of the Breakout salon.

UFOs In Space: Is Obscure Government Bureau Hiding Proof?

Despite UFOs appearing on NASA live feeds, and astronauts saying they've seen them, NASA maintains they do not exist in space, and claim the Apollo sightings were just confusion.

other than a report on lights on the surface of the Moon (Project Moon Blink), the agency has never declassified anything on anomalous objects in space. That comes despite a US Air Force report admitting "fastwalkers" exist in space, and NORAD spending time analyzing them.

We found an obscure federal bureau, the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES), that acts as a liaison between NASA and the State Department.

Hints of UFO documentation are available for OES — they're working on a return to the Moon by mid 2020s, a "space object registry," and in the past, were sent UFO sightings from American embassies, communications from Erich von Daniken, and appeared in Wikileaks files detailing mysterious "arrangements to welcome ET life forms to the US."

We've put together what seems to be the first real analysis of OES's connection to the UFO phenomenon — journalists need to focus FOIA requests here to determine if there are any reports of space-based sightings available.

Mysterious Deep-Space Flashes Repeat Every 157 Days

Published 8th June 2020

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tVjVk2ChPUbdsWYZFbmUge-650-80.jpg

Astronomers have discovered an activity cycle in another fast radio burst, potentially unearthing a significant clue about these mysterious deep-space phenomena.

Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are extragalactic flashes of light that pack a serious wallop, unleashing in a few milliseconds as much energy as Earth's sun does in a century. Scientists first spotted an FRB in 2007, and the cause of these eruptions remains elusive nearly a decade and a half later; potential explanations range from merging superdense neutron stars to advanced alien civilizations.

More than 100 FRBs have been discovered to date, and most of them are one-offs, flaring up just a single time (as far as we know). In January of this year, astronomers reported that one member of the "repeater" class, called FRB 180916.J0158+65, appears to exhibit a 16-day activity cycle: It fires off bursts for a four-day stretch, goes quiet for 12 days and then starts all over again.

Comet SWAN Is Dying - Solar Heating May Have Broken Its Core Apart

Published 9th June 2020

Last month, Comet SWAN (C/2020 F8) had a close encounter with the sun. Apparently, it didn't go well. Since it skimmed the orbit of Mercury on May 27th, SWAN has plummeted in brightness, a sign that solar heating may have broken its core apart. On the other hand, it still has a tail.

Back at the beginning of May, astronomers were excited about Comet SWAN. It had just undergone a naked-eye outburst and seemed poised to become a bright comet, widely visible by even casual stargazers by the time June arrived.

Now Comet SWAN is interesting for a different reason. It's dying. Amateur astronomers can witness the end, but it won't be easy. Comet SWAN rises in the northeast just before sunrise, surrounded by twilight and almost 20 times too faint to see with the unaided eye (magnitude +9.5).

New ‘Climate Decoder’ To Study Potentially Habitable Exoplanets

Published 9th June 2019

https://earthsky.org/upl/2020/05/exoplanets-surfaces-stars-comparison-800x450.jpg

Over 4,000 exoplanets – worlds orbiting other stars – have been confirmed so far. But these planets are very far away, and we still don’t know much about them. To find out more, newer technology and observations are needed. To that end, scientists at Cornell University have developed a new tool – an environmental color “climate decoder” – that they hope will help astronomers learn more about the climates on some of these distant worlds, particularly potentially habitable Earth-sized planets.

The new peer-reviewed research paper detailing how this decoder would work was published in the June 2020 issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

A Second Exoplanet Confirmed For Proxima Centauri

Published 9th June 2019

https://earthsky.org/upl/2020/06/Proxima-c-photo-SPHERE.png

Just a few days ago, scientists announced that the closest known Earth-sized exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b, had been confirmed to orbit the nearest star to our solar system. That’s an exciting development, but now, as scientists announced on June 2, 2020, it seems that another possible planet around the same star also has been verified … Proxima Centauri c! Both planets are only 4.2 light-years away.

The peer-reviewed results were published in Research Notes of the AAS back in April. Astronomer Fritz Benedict of McDonald Observatory presented the findings at the virtual 236th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

We Can Handle The Truth

Published 8th June 2019 By Bryce Zabel

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EaA0o2pUcAAG6or.jpg

Times are tough. First, the coronavirus sent us indoors to watch the number of victims skyrocket and the economy crater. Then demands for racial justice in the face of police abuse forced curfews across the nation. Protests continue now. Waiting to be dealt with are the challenges of climate disasters, species extinctions, poverty, refugees and nuclear proliferation. Can we really afford to add aliens to the mix?
The argument is understandable. The world of 2020 seems just too unbalanced and chaotic. To add in the mind-blowing fact that we truly are not alone is more than society can deal with at one time. Disclosure of UFO reality will have to wait to give us time to be prepared. Or so the thinking goes…
It’s a false narrative, and it should be rejected. The actual truth is that the right time to start coming clean about humankind’s place in the universe is right now.

To quote Preston:

It's one of the strangest types of UFO behavior, and kind of creepy. UFOs are hovering over graveyards and cemeteries, usually at very low levels. In some cases, they land and humanoids are seen. In other cases, graves are being disturbed. Clearly something very profound is happening here.
In this video I present about a dozen cases coming from major researchers across the world. UFOs are definitely attracted to graveyards. The question is: why?
For those who would like to learn more about the information in this video, I wrote an in-depth study of these types of cases in my book, "Not from Here: Volume 1," now available here (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A2LCJJQ/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=officialweb0f-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01A2LCJJQ&linkId=4ffbd5732e2359739e664a108e834c76)

Stargazers Have Found The Star/Exoplanet Combo That Is Actually The Most Ideal Twin To The Sun/Earth

Published 9th June 2020

https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/TESS-1st.png

At opportunities, it looks like there is actually an indundation of news including breakthroughs of “Earth-like” earths. As well as while those news are actually amazing, as well as medically notable, there is actually constantly a little bit of concern deciding on away at all of them: precisely just how Earth-like are they, actually?

After all, Earth is actually specified through its own partnership along with the Sun.

There is actually no meticulous meaning of the condition “Earth-like.” It merely implies a globe that is actually identical in some aspects.

But a lot of the amount of time when the condition Earth-like is actually utilized to define an exoplanet, it describes the measurements, as well as to the ability for fluid water to continue to persist externally. The concern is actually, many globes that are actually referred to as Earth-like– very most exoplanets as a matter of fact– are actually orbiting reddish dwarf celebrities.

May 2020 : Earth Changes Summary

Published 8th June 2020

As the Sun enters a 'lockdown' period, Earth is charging up and responding accordingly. This time, even mainstream science said that this solar minimum could cause freezing weather, famine, increased earthquakes, and catastrophic volcanic eruptions... and the latest Earth Changes are pointing to that.

But decreased activity is not the only aspect to highlight, as the Sun unleashed the biggest flare since 2017 on May 29. Something that can get more dangerous for satellites and other technological devices if our magnetosphere continues to weaken.

Funny enough, the George Floyd protests and riots coincided with this solar flare...a human and cosmic connection?

Some parts of the northern hemisphere experienced a return to winter... one month away from summer, while early snow and cold records were hit in the southern hemisphere when winter has not yet "officially" begun.

A rare May snowstorm triggered by a polar vortex whipped through the northeast of the US, with parts of Maine and New Hampshire receiving as much as 10 inches of snow, and near white-out conditions in upstate New York.

Greece, Germany, Turkey, and Russia also got their share of unseasonable snow, but Ayubia National Park in Pakistan was covered in snow for the first time in a century, and Australia ended up with 40 inches of snow during the coldest start of May ever recorded.

An absurd amount of water poured down all over the world in May, causing devastating floods and landslides. Kenia, India, Oman and Central America where the most affected with hundreds of deaths, and thousands displaced.

Cyclone Amphan left a path of destruction in Odisha and West Bengal, India, leaving hundreds of families without homes, and thousands without electricity.

Unusually strong tornadoes, multiple twisters at once - where it's not common - and big hail also left a path of destruction in the US, Mexico, and parts of Europe and Asia.

An last but not least: India, Pakistan, and East Africa suffered their worst locust attack in 27 years, leaving millionaire losses in crops, and widespread damage in vegetation. Combined with the unnecessary food losses caused by the lockdown, we might be looking at millions more going hungry in the not too distant future.

Electrical activity in the atmosphere increased this month too. Lightning strikes killed people, cattle, and amazed millions. Just Washington registered more than 87,000 lightning strikes in one day... nearly 23 times the annual average!

Ecuadorian Volcano Eruption Leaves Several Cities Covered In Ash

Published 10th June 2020

The eruption of a volcano in Ecuador's Amazon region left several cities covered in ash on Tuesday, fueling concerns of a potential health impact as the South American nation slowly emerges from a brutal coronavirus outbreak.

The Sangay volcano (https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/sangay/news.html) has had moderate eruptions for over a year that have had little impact because of its remote location, but a recent change in wind patterns has pushed ash toward the coast and affected areas including the largest city, Guayaquil.

"The ash comes out of the Sangay volcano and spreads into the Guayas province, and we see a quantity of ash that is arriving near Guayaquil," Benjamin Bernard of the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador told reporters, referring to the province where Guayaquil is located.

The institute said it expects minor volcanic eruptions to continue in the coming days but does not expect a major eruption.

Ancient Micro-Meteoroids Carried Specks Of Stardust, Water To Asteroid 4 Vesta

Published 10th June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/ancientmicro.jpg

The formation of our solar system was a messy affair. Most of the material that existed before its formation—material formed around other, long-dead stars—was vaporized, then recondensed into new materials. But some grains of that material, formed before the sun's birth, still persist.

These "stardust" grains arrived on Earth inside primitive meteorites. New Washington University in St. Louis research led by Nan Liu, an assistant research professor in physics and the Laboratory for Space Sciences in Arts & Sciences, shows that stardust was also delivered to another planet-like body in the solar system, asteroid 4 Vesta, by micrometeoroids that also carried water.

First Global Map Of Rockfalls On The Moon

Published 8th June 2020

A research team from ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Göttingen counted over 136,000 rockfalls on the moon caused by asteroid impacts. Even billions of years old landscapes are still changing.

In October 2015, a spectacular rockfall occurred in the Swiss Alps: in the late morning hours, a large, snow-covered block with a volume of more than 1500 cubic meters suddenly detached from the summit of Mel de la Niva. It fell apart on its way downslope, but a number of boulders continued their journey into the valley. One of the large boulders came to a halt at the foot of the summit next to a mountain hut, after traveling more than 1.4 kilometers and cutting through woods and meadows.

History Of The Earth

The Mystery Of The Late Heavy Bombardment

Published 7th June 2020

A collection of radioactive chronometers were employed to reach this date. Most notably these include pairings of U-Pb, Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Ar40-Ar39, each of these including a parent atom and a decay product.

Jupiter’s gargantuan mass can inflict chaos on the orbits of smaller bodies over millions and billions of rotations. The danger becomes acute if the orbit of the junior body reflects a ratio of Jupiter’s orbit (for example if the body orbits twice for every single orbit of Jupiter.) In this case the body will pass Jupiter at the same time and place in each orbit and Jupiter’s gravity will pull strongest on the body at the same time and place in each orbit. Over many orbits the slight tug will incrementally draw the junior body out of a circular path and into ever more eccentric ellipses. Eventually this oblong orbit will intersect the orbits of the terrestrial planets.

This phenomenon is called decompression or adiabatic melting is a key feature of plate tectonics on Earth today.

The age of Borealis Basin is somewhat controversial. Without direct access to the physical crater we rely on the fragments of Mars that fall to Earth as meteorites. The oldest known igneous Martian meteorite ALH84001 was forged through the accumulation of crystals floating in a body of magma. It’s therefore postulated that ALH84001 was created during or after the Borealis impact as this event melted half of Mars and deeply buried the other half, erasing any trace of prior martian history.

Around 40% of all meteorites found are classified as H chondrites and most likely originate ultimately from the asteroid 6 Hebe. Around 35% are L chondrites and likely originate from either 433 Eros or 8 Flora. Mesosiderites from 16 Psyche and eucrites from 4 Vesta round off the list of four parent asteroids upon which we find evidence of impacts between 3.5 GA and 4.1 GA. It’s a short list.

Obsessive investigations into the most resilient minerals on the planet, Hadean zircons, unveil a slight bump in temperature between 3.8 and 4.0 billion years ago--the lingering trauma of an otherworldly pummeling? But in all the world only 4 miniscule mineral grains record the bump.

Noting our inability to acquire physical evidence from other planets scientists sought a different way to date geologic features. Since surface imagery was comparatively abundant a sophisticated statistical method was developed to assess age by counting the size and frequency of craters present on a terrain and comparing this size frequency distribution (SFD) to that of a known terrain. This process is fairly effective at achieving relative ages, but caught criticism for some assumptions it makes.

At first glance it appears impossible that the Apollo 16 and 17 sample should come from the Imbrium impact, in each case over a thousand kilometers away. Improved imagery acquired decades later however reveals a radial pattern of debris emanating from Imbrium Basin that overprints both landing sites.

Imbrium is the youngest basin on the near-side of the Moon; much of the volcanism on Mercury ceased by that time; the major basins of Mars all betray the ephemeral presence of liquid water before it vanished from the planet. Echos of this early era still reverberate through the Solar System; solitary giants can wreak havoc especially on our fragile ecosystems, but the terrible scale of the calamity has never again been matched.

In the interest of full disclosure, a continuous (monotonic) bombardment is the perspective that makes the most sense to me. Not only because the physical evidence is sparse and is getting sparser but because the erasure of terrestrial history is a throughline of geology. The destructive power of geologic processes has been on display throughout this narrative and it is a very sensible explanation for the negative anomaly we find in the impact history (a negative anomaly which is now significantly shorter than the “spike” of the LHB.) Furthermore models have consistently shown that while orbital evolution among the gas giants should be expected early on, it’s exceptionally rare for this dynamism to last more than a few 100 MA and virtually impossible for the orbits to calm for several 100 MA then return to a dynamic state. In the absence of a convincing causal mechanism I personally conclude that the LHB is fictitious.

This Black Hole Is So Close You Can “See” It, Here’s How

Published 10th June 2020

A team of astronomers discovered a black hole lying just 1,000 light-years from Earth — and its presence may hint at the existence of many more.

Astronomers have just found the closest black hole to us yet, a discovery which suggests there could be even more black holes lurking out there in the universe.

The astronomers were originally looking for a double star system called HR 6819 — a pair of stars close enough that it can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere without any optical aids on a dark and clear night. But while observing the stars, the astronomers realized that what they were really seeing was a three body system: The inner star was orbiting around something (hint, hint: a black hole) once every 40 days, while the outer star orbited the pair from much farther away.

Chinese Private Launch Firms Advance With Methane Engines, Launch Preparations & New Funding

Published 10th June 2020

https://spacenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/tianque-80-testing-may2020-landspace-3-879x485.jpeg

A number of Chinese private launch firms for the burgeoning commercial space sector have reported progress in efforts to develop a range of launch vehicles.

Landspace and iSpace are reporting progress with methane rocket engines, while Galactic Energy is moving closer to launch of its Ceres-1 launcher. Deep Blue Aerospace has meanwhile secured early funding for development of a liquid launch vehicle series.

Landspace completed three gimbaling hot fire tests of the SkyLark (Tianque-12) 80t-thrust-level cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen rocket engine early-mid May. Tianque-11, a smaller, 10-ton liquid oxygen methane engine, passed 2,000 seconds of testing June 5.

The engines will together power the 48.8-meter-tall, two-stage Zhuque-2 launch vehicle. The launcher will be capable of delivering a 4,000-kilogram payload capacity to a 200-kilometer low Earth orbit (LEO). Alternatively ZQ-2 can loft 2,000 kilograms to 500-kilometer Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO).

Space News | Robert Hawthorne: Upheaval Dome & Lightning-Scarred Earth

Published 5th June 2020

For more than a decade, among the individuals exploring the concepts of an Electric Universe, a community has arisen which is devoted to exploring the surface of planet Earth. The geological processes of an Electric Universe go well beyond the theoretical toolkit in standard geology. Laboratory experiments involving electrical discharge to solid surfaces reveal familiar features seen on every rocky body in the solar system, including our home planet.

In part one of this two part presentation, Robert offers his analysis on what may be one of the best candidates for an electrical scarring feature on Earth — the so-called Upheaval Dome in Canyonlands National Park in Utah.

Space News | Robert Hawthorne: Upheaval Dome & The Obsession Stone

Published 10th June 2020

In his previous presentation, electric geology investigator Robert Hawthorne explored the stupendous geological feature in the American Southwest known as Upheaval Dome. As Robert explained, while standard geology favors the interpretation that Upheaval Dome was created by a kinetic impact, the hypothesis that the feature was created by interplanetary lightning finds great support in the geologic evidence.

Now, in Part Two of this presentation, Robert includes recent experimental research which shows that chemical changes in rock normally attributed to impact such as “shocked quartz” are also produced by powerful lightning. He introduces an unusual rock associated with the Upheaval Dome site, called the Obsession Stone, whose discoverers were able to submit the rock for professional chemical analysis.

In conclusion, Robert explains how his analysis only strengthens the electrical discharge hypothesis.

Rare Annular Solar Eclipse To Create A Dazzling 'Ring Of Fire' In The Sky This Month

Published 11th June 2020

On June 21, the Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun, producing a "Ring of Fire" solar eclipse. At greatest eclipse, 99.5% of the Sun's surface will be covered.

Near the center-line of the eclipse, observers will experience something special: The Ring Of Fire.' As the Moon crosses the sun dead-center, a circular strip or annulus of sunlight will completely surround the dark lunar disk. Visually, the sun has a big black hole in the middle.

The "path of annularity" where this occurs is only about 53 miles wide, but it stretches almost halfway around the world passing many population centers en route.

The annular eclipse will begin in the Democratic Republic of Congo at 4:45 UTC and sweep through South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea before crossing over the Red Sea into the Arabian Peninsula. It will then travel through Pakistan, northern India, and southern China before finally ending over Taiwan at 09:34 UTC. In those locations the Ring of Fire phenomenon will be visible for as much as 38 seconds.

Meanwhile, parts of Africa, southeast Europe, Asia, and the Pacific will witness varying degrees of an equally mesmerizing partial solar eclipse.

An Annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but the lunar disk is not quite wide enough to cover the entire star.

WARNING!
The ring of sunlight during annularity is blindingly bright. Even though most of the Sun's disk will be covered you still need to use a solar filter or some type of projection technique.

Eleven Years Charting Edge Of Solar System

Published 11th June 2020

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/heliotail_wide.jpg

Far, far beyond the orbits of the planets lie the hazy outlines of the magnetic bubble in space that we call home.

This is the heliosphere, the vast bubble that is generated by the Sun’s magnetic field and envelops all the planets. The borders of this cosmic bubble are not fixed. In response to the Sun’s gasps and sighs, they shrink and stretch over the years.

Now, for the first time, scientists have used an entire solar cycle of data from NASA’s IBEX spacecraft to study how the heliosphere changes over time. Solar cycles last roughly 11 years, as the Sun swings from seasons of high to low activity, and back to high again. With IBEX’s long record, scientists were eager to examine how the Sun’s mood swings play out at the edge of the heliosphere. The results show the shifting outer heliosphere in great detail, deftly sketch the heliosphere’s shape — a matter of debate in recent years, and hint at processes behind one of its most puzzling features. These findings, along with a newly fine-tuned data set, are published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplements on June 10, 2020.

‘Sherpas’ Unravel Secrets Of The Sun’s Mysterious ‘Corona’ From The Last Total Solar Eclipse

Published 9th June 2020

https://specials-images.forbesimg.com/imageserve/5edf6d61cb11580006fabd36/960x0.jpg

What’s silky white, utterly entrancing and visible for only a few minutes each year?

The Sun’s corona—its crown, or outer atmosphere (and nothing to do with Covid-19, before you ask)—is always there. It’s also almost always blocked from view by the brighter disk of the Sun. That’s a shame because a glimpse of the corona is commonly called “nature’s greatest sight.”

Only during the brief “totality” phase of a total solar eclipse can the corona be glimpsed, which makes it tricky for modern science to take a good, long look. Why?

Total solar eclipses only last a few minutes

Bose-Einstein Quantum "Fifth State Of Matter" Seen For First Time In Space

Published 11th June 2020

Scientists have observed the fifth state of matter in space for the first time, offering unprecedented insight that could help solve some of the quantum universe's most intractable conundrums, research showed Thursday.
Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) -- the existence of which was predicted by Albert Einstein and Indian mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose almost a century ago -- are formed when atoms of certain elements are cooled to near absolute zero (0 Kelvin, minus 273.15 Celsius).

At this point, the atoms become a single entity with quantum properties, wherein each particle also functions as a wave of matter.

BECs straddle the line between the macroscopic world governed by forces such as gravity and the microscopic plane, ruled by quantum mechanics.

Scientists believe BECs contain vital clues to mysterious phenomena such as dark energy -- the unknown energy thought to be behind the Universe's accelerating expansion.

But BECs are extremely fragile. The slightest interaction with the external world is enough to warm them past their condensation threshold.

Solar Storm Forecast | A Solar Storm Nearly Clips Parker Solar Probe

Published 12th June 2020

This week our Sun gives us more eye-candy as we have two new-cycle, bright regions in Earth view. One is region 2765 and it is the largest new-cycle sunspot we have seen to date. These regions are boosting the solar flux into the low 70s, which means radio propagation on Earth's dayside is staying in the marginal range. Although there arent any Earth-directed solar storms, we did have a far-side launch of a solar storm this week. the intriguing thing is that it nearly clipped the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft, which is just finishing its 5th perihelion pass (closest approach to our Sun was on June 7th). This solar storm is also making news because it is the first strong "Halo CME" to be seen as we rise out of solar minimum. That it was so clearly seen in Earth-based coronagraphs means that these solar storms are once again growing stronger. Learn the details of this near miss of Parker Solar Probe, catch up on aurora photos from recent solar storming, and see what else our Sun has in store this week!

Comet ATLAS Diving Past The Sun & Mercury's Comet-Like Tail Spotted By STEREO

Published 13th June 2020

In late May, NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft watched the comet's disintegrating remains dive past the Sun. STEREO-A's Heliospheric Imager is a sensitive camera that can see stars, planets and comets near the Sun. In the video you can clearly see the gaseous material blowing from the left. This is the solar wind. Yes, the Heliospheric Imager is so sensitive, it can even see the wind!

"As Comet ATLAS moves away from the sun, it will technically be observable low in the sky from the southern hemisphere," says Karl Battams of the Naval research Lab in Washington DC . "However, the comet had already fragmented by the time STEREO-A saw it, and it was fading even more by the time it left the Heliospheric Imager's field of view. Comet ATLAS is unlikely to be seen again other than by powerful telescopes."

"In the images showing Mercury, you may also see an unusual feature," says Battams. "Mercury has a tail much like a comet. It is caused primarily by sodium atoms being kicked off Mercury's surface by intense sunlight."

The Moon & Venus Spectacular Conjunction Before Dawn

Published 12th June 2020

On June 17 up to 19, wake up before dawn to see Venus and the waning crescent Moon. Venus transitioned over from the evening to morning sky on June 3, 2020, and sits low at dawn. If you have a clear sky and unobstructed horizon, you may well see Venus with the unaided eye one hour before sunrise.

Moon/Venus Conjunction
On June 19, the waning crescent Moon will be in conjunction with Venus, meaning the objects share the same celestial longitude and will appear close together in the sky. They will fit comfortably within the field of view
of a telescope, but they will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair
of binoculars.

Some people might even see the Moon occult (cover over) Venus. The Moon will be at mag -9.0 and Venus will be at mag -4.3. Both objects will lie in the constellation Taurus.

The Pleiades
You may also see the Pleiades star cluster before Venus rises into your sky. The Pleiades cluster is just returning to the morning sky, and you may need binoculars to view it. According to earthsky.com "in another week or two, the Pleiades will be much easier to spot in a predawn sky."

What If The Universe Was Lopsided?

Published 12th June 2020

http://cdn.sci-news.com/images/enlarge7/image_8312e-Anisotropic-Universe.jpg

In 1929, astronomer Edwin Hubble noticed that almost all galaxies had a red shift to their color, and the farther away they were, the redder they appeared. He concluded that the waves of light from the galaxies had been stretched as they traveled to us, meaning space itself was expanding in all directions. This observation shaped our image of the universe... up until now.

Some researchers think that shape might be a bit more lopsided than we originally thought as new research provides possible evidence for anisotropy.

Astronomers used x-ray emissions from galaxy clusters and concluded that the universe might not be as isotropic as we thought. The researchers looked at data from almost 850 galaxy clusters. Using their X-ray emissions, the astronomers estimated each cluster’s temperature, and thus its luminosity. They then cross-checked the numbers using another method that relies on the rate we assume the universe is uniformly expanding.

And when they compared the two values, they found two areas of the night sky where the numbers didn’t match up.

Do We Live in a Lopsided Universe?
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-we-live-in-a-lopsided-universe1/
"If your life sometimes seems directionless, you might legitimately blame the universe. According to the key tenets of modern physics, the cosmos is 'isotropic' at multi-billion-light-year scales—meaning it should have the same look and behavior in every direction. Ever since the big bang nearly 14 billion years ago, the universe ought to have expanded identically everywhere. And that expectation matches what astronomers see when they observe the smooth uniformity of the big bang’s all-sky afterglow: the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Now, however, an x-ray survey of distances to galaxy clusters across the heavens suggests some are significantly closer or farther away than isotropy would predict."

Universe is Anisotropic on Large Scales, New Study Suggests
http://www.sci-news.com/astronomy/anisotropic-universe-08312.html
"'One of the pillars of cosmology is that the Universe is isotropic, meaning the same in all directions. Our work shows there may be cracks in that pillar,' said Dr. Konstantinos Migkas, an astronomer at the University of Bonn."

Probing cosmic isotropy with a new X-ray galaxy cluster sample through the LX–T scaling relation
https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2020/04/aa36602-19/aa36602-19.html
"This result demonstrates that X-ray studies that assume perfect isotropy in the properties of galaxy clusters and their scaling relations can produce strongly biased results whether the underlying reason is cosmological or related to X-rays. The identification of the exact nature of these anisotropies is therefore crucial for any statistical cluster physics or cosmology study."

Scientists Close In On 12-Billion-Year-Old Signal From The End Of The Universe's 'Dark Age'

Published 11th June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/1-scientistscl.jpg

Today, stars fill the night sky. But when the universe was in its infancy, it contained no stars at all. And an international team of scientists is closer than ever to detecting, measuring and studying a signal from this era that has been traveling through the cosmos ever since that starless era ended some 13 billion years ago.

That team—led by researchers at the University of Washington, the University of Melbourne, Curtin University and Brown University—reported last year in the Astrophysical Journal that it had achieved an almost 10-fold improvement of radio emission data collected by the Murchison Widefield Array. Team members are currently scouring the data from this radio telescope in remote Western Australia for a telltale signal from this poorly understood "dark age" of our universe.

How Four Newborn Exoplanets Get Cooked By Their Star

Published 11th June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/5ee2103113d65.jpg

Scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) examined the fate of the young star V1298 Tau and its four orbiting exoplanets. The results show that these recently born planets are roasted by the intense X-ray radiation of their young sun, which leads to the vaporization of the atmospheres of these planets. The innermost planets could be evaporated down to their rocky cores, so that there is no atmosphere left.

Young exoplanets live in a high-stakes environment: Their sun produces a large amount of energetic X-ray radiation, typically 1000 to 10,000 times more than our own sun. This X-ray radiation can heat the atmospheres of exoplanets and sometimes even boil them away. How much of an exoplanet's atmosphere evaporates over time depends on the properties of the planet—its mass, density, and how close it is to its star. But how much can the star influence what happens over billions of years? This is a question that astronomers at the AIP chose to tackle in their newest paper (https://academic.oup.com/mnras/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/mnras/staa1462/5849018).

Solar Orbiter’s First Close Approach To The Sun

Published 15th June 2020

https://scitechdaily.com/images/Solar-Orbiter-Reaches-First-Perihelion-768x432.jpg

On June 15, 2020, ESA’s new Sun-explorer Solar Orbiter reached its first perihelion, the point on its orbit closest to the Sun.

The spacecraft got as close as 77 million kilometers to the star’s surface during this perihelion, about half the distance between Earth and the star.

All of the spacecraft’s ten scientific instruments were on during the week around the closest approach, measuring properties of the surrounding environment, such as the magnetic field and the solar wind, but also taking close-up images of the Sun’s surface.

No other spacecraft before had taken closer images of the Sun, even though NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, launched in 2018, makes closer approaches. The spacecraft, however, doesn’t carry instruments capable of looking directly at the Sun. Ground-based telescopes can obtain higher resolution images, but due to the effects of Earth’s atmosphere cannot capture the entire solar spectrum.

The first perihelion also marked the end of Solar Orbiter’s commissioning phase and the beginning of the cruise phase, which will last until late 2021. During the science phase that follows, the spacecraft will get as close as 42 million kilometers to the Sun’s surface, closer than the planet Mercury.

The spacecraft’s operators will then use the gravity of Venus to shift Solar orbiter’s orbit out of the ecliptic plane, in which the planets of the Solar System orbit, to enable the telescopes to get the first-ever proper views of the Sun’s poles. Studying the activity in the polar regions will help the scientists to better understand the behavior of the Sun’s magnetic field, which drives the creation of the solar wind that in turn affects the environment of the entire Solar System.

Venus In A Minute

Published 15th June 2020

Our sister planet Venus could serve as a model for many exoplanets soon to be discovered in the upcoming era of new space telescopes such as James Webb and others. Venus may have been far more Earth-like than its present climate state, which is inhospitable and more like that inside a pressure-cooker oven with surface temperatures of 450 C and pressures equivalent to 1,000 meters under the sea. How did Venus evolve from a past "habitable" state to its present one, and how does that help us understand our own destiny?

What is missing is essential information about the chemistry of Venus' massive atmosphere and how it is organized from top to bottom. Missions that measure the detailed chemistry of the atmosphere from the top of the cloud deck to the hot near-surface have not been flown since the 1970s and 1980s. We now have an opportunity to get back with modern sensors and spacecraft that could establish Venus as a "window on the universe." It is now possible to use forensic chemistry methods to decipher the history of Venus oceans, whether volcanoes are erupting now or in the recent past, and how the vast highlands of Venus are structured both compositionally and in 3D. We can combine satellite observations and those from heavily-instrumented probes and landers to reveal the wonders of Venus and potentially to help scientists understand how planets similar to our own become uninhabitable.

Earth's Magnetic Field Is Changing Fast

Published 15th June 2020

Weakening of Earth's magnetic field is a harbinger of increase in frequency and severity of natural disasters. Changes in the tension of Earth's magnetic field are happening unevenly along the surface and reach maximum values in the Western Hemisphere. This suggests that on these territories the strongest disasters should be expected in the coming years.

Earth's magnetic field is a natural "shield" of the planet protecting all life on it from harmful space and solar radiation. In fact, if the Earth had not have its own magnetic field, then life on it in its usual for us form would have been impossible.

However, observations show that Earth's magnetic field is gradually weakening, and with this the geomagnetic poles are moving. Data transmitted by Swarm satellites, launched by European Space Agency (ESA) confirms the common tendency of the magnetic field weakening. The most significant level of decrease is observed in the Western Hemisphere of our planet.

While analyzing the consequences of many natural disasters, scientists came to a conclusion that right before the seismic activity the anomalies in Earth's magnetic field appear. In particular, the activation of the Pacific lithospheric plate in subduction zones preceded the earthquake that happened in Japan on March 11, 2011. This event became a sort of an indicator of a new phase of seismic activity, related to the accelaration of the movement of this lithospheric plate.

The displacement of geomagnetic poles located in Eastern Siberia and Pacific Ocean due to cosmic factors led to colossal changes of the age-old magnetic variations on the territory of the Japanese archipelago. The result of these events was a series of powerful 9.0 magnitude earthquakes.

According to the official data, Earth's magnetic field is weakening 10 times faster now. The weakening was even more significant in the area of so-called South Atlantic anomaly off the coast of Brazil. In addition, holes in Earth's magnetic field are a sort of breaches in the magnetosphere through which huge flows of solar radiation penetrate. For unknown reasons the number of these holes is constantly growing.

It is known that the weakening of Earth's magnetic field leads to a polarity reversal in which the north and south magnetic poles switch places and their reversal occurs. Paleomagnetism research showed that earlier in times of polarity reversals, which occured gradually, Earth's magnetic field has lost dipole structure. The inversion of the magnetic field was preceded by its weakening, and after that the field value increased again and reached the previous values.

In the past, similar inversions occured on average every 250,000 years. But since the last one it's been about 780,000 years, as scientists say. However, science has no official explanation for such a long period of stability. One way or another, but current rapid weakening of the magnetic field is a sign of the beginning of global processes in space and inside the Earth.

That is why the cataclysms taking place on the planet are caused largely by natural factors rather than human impact. Traditional science faces certain difficulties trying to answer the questions:
What happens to the magnetic field at the time of inversion?
Does it disappear completely or is it weakening to certain critical values?

There are many theories and hypotheses concering this subject but none of them seems reliable. The very fact of a significant magnetic anomaly happening at the time of polarity reversals can lead to global tectonic changes on Earth, and also pose a serious threat to all life on the planet because of the rising level of solar radiation.

The New Horizons Spacecraft Just Helped Make First Stereoscopic Image Of A Star's Location

Published 15th June 2020

Much of astronomy is based around measuring the distances to celestial bodies, and the distances are all rooted in a technique called stellar parallax. This has been used since the 19th century to measure the distances to stars, and all measurements of interstellar and intergalactic distances are based on the measurement of the tiny wobble in a star's apparent position.
The problem is, despite it being a fundamental technique at the core of astronomy, nobody has ever been able to make a simple, obvious demonstration of it, until now.

Green Glow Spotted In Atmosphere Of Mars

Published 16th June 2020

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3ntcSr3nHvjnhjqr4RJQVC-650-80.jpg

The atmosphere of Mars has a distinct green glow, just like Earth's.

The European Space Agency's Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) spotted an emerald glow in Mars' wispy atmosphere, marking the first time the phenomenon has been spotted on a world beyond Earth, a new study reports.

"One of the brightest emissions seen on Earth stems from night glow. More specifically, from oxygen atoms emitting a particular wavelength of light that has never been seen around another planet," study lead author Jean-Claude Gérard, of the Université de Ličge in Belgium, said in a statement.

"However, this emission has been predicted to exist at Mars for around 40 years — and, thanks to TGO, we’ve found it," Gérard said.

C/2020 F3 NEOWISE

Published 16th June 2020

Naked-eye comet NEOWISE? Here we go again. A comet is falling toward the sun, and it could become a naked-eye object after it skims past the orbit of Mercury on July 3rd. Amateur astronomers taking pictures of the Comet NEOWISE as it is approaching the Sun. At the time, its visual magnitude is near +7.0, below the threshold for naked-eye visibility.

It might not look like much now, but this comet could blossom in the weeks after perihelion (closest approach to the sun). Forecasters say Comet NEOWISE might become as bright as a 2nd or 3rd magnitude star. Northern hemisphere observers would be able to easily see it in the evening sky in mid-July.

At this point, you may be experiencing a feeling of déjŕ vu. Almost the exact same forecast was issued for Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4) in March and Comet SWAN (C/2020 F8) in May. Both comets dived toward the sun and … instead of blossoming, died. Intense solar heat can do that to a fragile ball of ice.

Michael Mattiazzo, who is one of the world’s most experienced amateur comet observers, thinks Comet NEOWISE could turn out better. "I'd say there's a 70% chance this comet will survive perihelion," he says, basing his guess on the stability of the comet’s light curve, which sets it apart from Comets ATLAS and SWAN. "Hopefully, Comet NEOWISE could be a case of 'third time lucky' for northern hemisphere observers."

We'll know soon enough. On June 22nd, the comet will enter the field of view of SOHO's C3 coronagraph–a space-based instrument that blocks the glare of the sun to reveal nearby stars, planets and comets. For a whole week, astronomers will be able to monitor Comet NEOWISE as it approaches the orbit of Mercury. If it falls apart, the event may be visible in the images. Ditto if it survives.

The US Military Is Getting Serious About Nuclear Thermal Propulsion

Published 16th June 2020

https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/9255078_orig-800x624.jpg

There are many ways to get around space, but most of them are pretty slow. This is why, even when launching at an optimal time, a spacecraft leaving Earth requires about six months to reach orbit around Mars.

For decades, many rocket scientists have looked to a propulsion system powered by a nuclear reactor as the fastest practical means of getting to Mars and other places in the Solar System more quickly.

Wernher von Braun, the German engineer who defected to the United States after World War II, recognized the potential of nuclear thermal propulsion even before his Saturn V rocket landed humans on the Moon with chemical propulsion. Eventually, this led to a project called NERVA, which stood for Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application. It was eventually canceled to help pay for the space shuttle.

NASA has supported efforts to develop a nuclear thermal engine in fits and starts since. The basic idea is pretty simple—a nuclear reactor heats a propellant such as liquid hydrogen, and it expands through a rocket nozzle and provides thrust. No such rocket engine has ever flown, however, and at present, NASA is more interested in developing nuclear energy for surface power on other worlds than working on propulsion.

There may be as many as one Earth-like planet for every five Sun-like stars in the Milky way Galaxy, according to new estimates by University of British Columbia astronomers using data from NASA’s Kepler mission.

To be considered Earth-like, a planet must be rocky, roughly Earth-sized and orbiting Sun-like (G-type) stars. It also has to orbit in the habitable zones of its star—the range of distances from a star in which a rocky planet could host liquid water, and potentially life, on its surface.

The Milky Way Could Be Home To Thirty Six "Alien Civilisations"

Published 16th June 2020

It's a cosmic question that has stumped humanity for generations: is there intelligent life beyond our planet?

There's still no conclusive proof that aliens are actually out there, but new research says that our galaxy could be home to 36 civilizations on other planets.

The study says that if life can evolve on other Earth-like planets, three dozen "intelligent civilizations" could exist across the Milky Way. They should also be capable of broadcasting signals into space in the same way that humans do.

"The way we define it is something, an intelligence, which communicates through technology like radio waves, sending lasers into space, optical light going into space, like from our cities, that kind of thing," said Christopher Conselice, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Nottingham and a co-author of the research paper, published in the Astrophysical Journal (https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ab8225).

Earth & Venus From Martian Surface

Published 17th June 2020

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover occasionally stops to stargaze. Recently, it captured a shot of Earth and Venus in the Red Planet's night sky.

Curiosity aimed its Mast Camera, or Mastcam, at the heavens about 75 minutes after sunset on June 5, 2020, the 2,784th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. A two-image twilight panorama reveals Earth in one frame and Venus in the other. Both planets appear as mere pinpoints of light, owing to a combination of distance and dust in the air; they would normally look like very bright stars.

The brief photo session was partly to gauge the twilight brightness: During this time of year on Mars, there's more dust in the air to reflect sunlight, making it particularly bright, said Mastcam co-investigator Mark Lemmon of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

"Even moderately bright stars were not visible when this image of Venus was taken," Lemmon said. "Earth also has bright twilights after some large volcanic eruptions."

At the bottom of the new images is the top of a rock feature called Tower Butte in the "clay-bearing unit," which Curiosity has been exploring for more than a year. Since landing in 2012, the rover has captured blue Martian sunsets and passing asteroids as well as Mercury and Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, transiting across the Sun.

Proposed NASA Mission Would Visit Neptune's Curious Moon Triton

Published 16th June 2020

https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/discovery/20200616/PIA00317-16.jpg

When NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Neptune's strange moon Triton three decades ago, it wrote a planetary science cliffhanger.

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft ever to have flown past Neptune, and it left a lot of unanswered questions. The views were as stunning as they were puzzling, revealing massive, dark plumes of icy material spraying out from Triton's surface. But how? Images showed that the icy landscape was young and had been resurfaced over and over with fresh material. But what material, and from where?

How could an ancient moon six times farther from the Sun than Jupiter still be active? Is there something in its interior that is still warm enough to drive this activity?

A new mission competing for selection under NASA's Discovery Program aims to untangle these mysteries. Called Trident, like the three-pronged spear carried by the ancient Roman sea god Neptune, the team is one of four that is developing concept studies for new missions. Up to two will be selected by summer 2021 to become a full-fledged mission and will launch later in the decade.

Glorious Stars In Tonight's Sky: All The World's Myths Are Celestial!

Published 16th June 2020

All the world's ancient myths, scriptures and sacred stories can be shown -- with an amount of supporting evidence that is simply overwhelming -- to be based on CELESTIAL METAPHOR.

The figures and events described in those myths are based on specific constellations, as part of a system so ancient that it was already fully operational in the earliest texts from Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, ancient India -- suggesting that this system may well be an inheritance from some even earlier culture preceding all those known to conventional history at this time.

In this video, we explore one of the most beautiful AND MYTHOLOGICALLY-IMPORTANT regions of the night sky -- with tips on how to identify these significant constellations for yourself.

But what's the point of all this? The world's myths use this system of celestial metaphor as a language to convey vital truths we need in our lives, even in this modern era -- even in the very present moment, right now.

These myths, given to every culture on our earth, represent a precious inheritance which we have largely forgotten, because we no longer speak their language. In many cases, we cannot even find the constellations, which means we cannot see the celestial connections used in the language of the myths.

The good news is that you CAN learn to find the constellations, and it doesn't cost anything to do so -- and as we begin to understand the myths in the language they are actually speaking, we can begin to grasp the ancient wisdom they have been waiting to tell us for all these thousands of years.

The June Solstice 2020 & A Rare 'Ring Of Fire' Eclipse Take Place This Weekend

Published 18th June 2020

The June Solstice is Saturday, June 20, 2020, at 21:44 UTC. That’s 4:44 p.m. CDT in North America on June 20. In the Northern Hemisphere, the June Solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its highest and northernmost points in the sky. This event marks the start of summer in the northern half of the globe. In the Southern Hemisphere, the June Solstice marks the start of winter, when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky.

'Solstice' (Latin: 'solstitium') means 'sun-stopping', because the point where the Sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day.

Ancient cultures knew that the Sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments, such as Stonehenge, to follow the Sun’s yearly progress.

Today, we know that the solstice is an astronomical event, caused by Earth’s tilt on its axis and its motion in orbit around the Sun. It’s because Earth doesn’t orbit upright. Instead, our world is tilted on its axis by 23 1/2 degrees. Earth’s Northern and Southern Hemispheres trade places in receiving the Sun’s light and warmth most directly.

An Annular Solar Eclipse will occur on the weekend of the Solstice. Annular eclipses are very similar to Total Solar Eclipses, but instead of covering the Sun completely, the Moon only covers most of the Sun, leaving a thin, shining ring, called an “Annulus” or “Ring of Fire” around the Moon’s dark shape.

Space Weather News | The Sun's Ring Of Fire Eclipse & Sundiving Comets

Published 20th June 2020

This week all eyes are on the Sun, but not for the reasons you might think! First we have an annular solar eclipse that will make a ring of fire in the skies over Africa and parts of Asia. (Be sure to check below for links to where you can watch the eclipse live.) Secondly, we have multiple sun-diving comets this week, including the 4000th comet discovered in SOHO's coronagraphs! Both this comet and the 3999th made a gorgeous close flyby of the Sun a couple of days ago. But dont worry if you missed it because the comet NEOWISE is going to be entering SOHO and STEREO's coronagraph views in less than a week and we get to watch that comet as it makes its closest approach to the Sun on July 3rd. As for space weather from our star, it's a reasonably quiet week, with only mild conditions in the forecast. Indeed, it's the perfect pause to watch these other celestial sights!

X-Rays From A Newborn Star Hint At Our Sun's Earliest Days

Published 18th June 2020

Astronomers have announced the first detection of X-rays from the earliest phase of evolution of a star like our Sun.

The X-ray flare was seen from the "protostar" called HOPS 383, which is located about 1,400 light years from Earth.

Scientists discovered the flare in data of HOPS 383 captured by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in December 2017.

The flare was 2,000 times brighter in X-rays than what we currently see from our middle-aged Sun.

This result may reset the timeline for when astronomers think Sun-like stars start blasting X-rays into space.

It may also help explain the unusual chemical composition of certain meteorites and other mysteries involving the present-day Sun and Solar System.

Astronomers have reported the first detection of X-rays from the earliest phase of evolution of a star like our Sun. This discovery, made using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, may help answer some questions about the Sun and the Solar System as they are today.

The X-rays came from a flare emitted by an object called HOPS 383, located about 1,400 light years from Earth in the star-forming region of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. Astronomers refer to HOPS 383 as a young "protostar" because it is in the earliest phase of stellar evolution that occurs right after a large cloud of gas and dust has started to collapse. Once it has matured HOPS 383 will have a mass about half that of the Sun.

This result is significant because it resets the timeline for when astronomers think Sun-like stars start blasting X-rays into space. While scientists know that young stars are much more active in X-rays than older ones, they have debated just when X-ray emission begins.

Chandra observations in December 2017 revealed the X-ray flare in HOPS 383, which lasted for about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Astronomers didn't see any other X-rays from HOPS 383 during this observing time, meaning that the flare at its maximum was at least ten times brighter than the usual X-ray output from the protostar.

This kind of information helps astronomers determine what effects X-rays from a very young star like our Sun might on the objects that form around it. For example, such high-energy outbursts in our infant Sun may explain the unusual chemical composition that scientists have found in some meteorites.

Astronomers will need longer X-ray observations to learn more about flares during this very early phase of development for stars like our Sun. They will use Chandra and other telescopes to examine just how common are X-ray flares from the youngest protostars and how much of an influence they have on the development of solar systems here and beyond.

Only six months ago, none would have believed that we would find ourselves in a face mask wearing society today. Initially US agencies like the CDC said wearing face masks would not protect from CV -19. The surgeon general said the same. Other medical experts have cited serious health problems that can result from extended face mask use. Now the CDC says wearing a mask is essential. What changed? Is protecting public health really the goal? Or are other agendas in play? While populations are understandably burdened with the increasing day to day difficulties that covid-19 has brought on, what wider horizon challenges are looming? Could these background challenges very soon make other concerns mute?

As with any leaked record within the UFO community, it comes with controversy. Although some herald the leak as the greatest secret to be revealed in the last century; others consider it a well-thought out hoax which involves names of controversial UFO figures.

Who is right? What does Admiral Wilson himself say?

Radiation Might Be The Key Ingredient For Extraterrestrial Life

Published 23rd June 2020

New research reveals that massive amounts of radioactive material might actually be essential for life outside our solar system.

Huge amounts of radioactive material might not be so bad for life, after all. In fact, new research suggests that it might be exactly what some planets need to host life.

Here on Earth, water facilitates all of the chemical reactions of life.

When searching for other life out in the universe, it’s long been thought that the absolute most important thing a planet needs is, well, something like water.

That means that we’ve also been looking for a planet that’s located within the ‘habitable zone’ of its star — meaning that it's not too close to fry in the heat of that star and have all its water sizzle off, and not so far that it’s left out in the cold with only frozen water. But new research turns this entire idea on its head.

A team used modeling to find that at a certain size and with a high enough level of radioactive decay, a planet might not need a star to make it habitable, after all. Maybe all a planet needs is an abundant supply of radionuclides to keep itself warm.

Radionuclides are isotopes, or different types of familiar-sounding elements like uranium, that are radioactive.

Read More:

Life Beyond the Habitable Zone
https://aasnova.org/2020/03/02/life-beyond-the-habitable-zone/
[W]e already know that habitable zones don’t tell the whole story. Plenty of planets that lie within their stars’ habitable zones aren’t livable — perhaps because they’re inhospitable gas giants, or because they have the wrong type of atmosphere, or because they’re routinely blasted by energetic stellar flares from their host.
Could the opposite be true as well, however? Could planets outside of a star’s habitable zone be capable of supporting life?

No star, no problem: Radioactivity could make otherwise frozen planets habitable
https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/no-star-no-problem-radioactivity-could-make-otherwise-frozen-planets-habitable
[R]esearchers have now proposed that some planets, particularly ones that form near the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, might possess enough of these radioactive isotopes to generate sufficient heat to keep their surfaces from freezing entirely solid. “That gives you the freedom to be anywhere,” says Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at Harvard University and a co-author of the new study. “You don’t need to be close to a star.”

On the Habitable Lifetime of Terrestrial Worlds with High Radionuclide Abundances
https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.02862
One of the most widely used criteria for habitability is the existence of a suitable liquid solvent, based on which the concept of the habitable zone (HZ) was introduced. The HZ is defined as the region around the host star where liquid water can theoretically exist on the planet’s surface. It is, however, crucial to recognize that habitability is a broader concept than the HZ, implying that worlds outside the HZ may be habitable.

Breakthrough Listen Releases List Of “Exotica” – One Of Almost Every Kind Of Observable Object Or Phenomenon In The Universe

Published 22nd June 2020

https://irishtechnews.ie/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/image1-450-768x368.jpg

Breakthrough Listen, the initiative to find signs of intelligent life in the Universe, today released an innovative catalog of “Exotica” -- a diverse list of objects of potential interest to astronomers searching for technosignatures (indicators of technology developed by extraterrestrial intelligence). The catalog is a collection of over 700 distinct targets intended to include “one of everything” in the observed Universe - ranging from comets to galaxies, from mundane objects to the most rare and violent celestial phenomena.

The comprehensive new catalog is the first in recent times that aims to span the entire breadth of astrophysical phenomena, from distant galaxies, to objects in our own Solar System. The Listen team developed it conceptually, compiled it, and shared it with the astronomical community in the hope that it can guide future surveys - studying life beyond Earth and/or natural astrophysics - and serve as a general reference guide for the field.

“Many discoveries in astronomy were not planned,” remarked the lead author of the new catalog, Dr. Brian Lacki. “Sometimes a major new discovery was missed when nobody was looking in the right place, because they believed nothing could be found there. This happened with exoplanets, which might have been detected before the 1990s if astronomers looked for solar systems very different than ours. Are we looking in the wrong places for technosignatures? The Exotica catalog will help us answer that question.”

Comet NEOWISE & Comet Encke Plunging Toward The Sun For A Close Encounter

Published 22nd June 2020

COMET NEOWISE IS APPROACHING THE SUN: Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter near the orbit of Mercury on July 3rd. The comet has just entered the field of view of SOHO's C3 coronagraph, which, for the next week, will monitor how the comet reacts to the sun's intensifying heat.

Astronomers expect the comet to increase in brightness, reaching peak magnitude by July when it could potentially be visible with the naked eye. The comet will be visible very low in the northeast near the sunrise position, before dawn for several weeks centered on July 6.

Comet 2P/Encke
Comet Encke is approaching the Sun for its close encounter on June 25, 2020. Comet Encke has the shortest orbital period of any known comet within our solar system. It takes 3.30 years for Enke to orbit the Sun once. Its nucleus measures approximately 2.98 miles (4.8 kilometers) in diameter. Encke last reached perihelion (closest approach to the sun) in 2017.

At the time, you need binoculars to catch the comet at the evening. Comet Encke may brighten to 6th magnitude for southern-hemisphere observers in July.

Dust Storm Travelled More Than 5, 000 Miles Above The Ocean Toward The Gulf Of Mexico

Recorded 22nd & Published 23rd June 2020

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EbEjl8FXgAEdy5u?format=jpg

The storm will travel more than 5, 000 miles above the ocean towardthe Gulf of Mexico!

Weather forecasts indicate that the eastern winds will push the dust storm to travel more than 5,000 miles over the Atlantic Ocean to reach the Gulf of Mexico and relatively affect the shores of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico coast, thus affecting two continents more than 5,000 miles apart!

What is the impact of the dust wave on the hurricane season?

Dust waves rushing from western Africa to the Atlantic are common and frequent at this time of year, but they always negatively affect seasonal cyclone activity and may prevent them from occurring permanently in this period, raising drought levels in the middle and lower atmospheres.

Shear winds are also a reason for preventing storms and hurricanes from forming, and by shear winds here we mean the sudden difference in wind speed or direction in different layers of the atmosphere, which destroys any initial construction to form storms and hurricanes.

A special sunrise and sunset of the sun in the coming days on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico

This wave of dust and dust when it reaches coastal areas that are accustomed to the purity and purity of the atmosphere will make sunsets and sunrises a distinctive sight, so that the horizon tends to the color of the garroup and the sunrise to warm up due to the presence of dust particles, which is rarely considered for these coastal areas.

How We Know A Volcano Is Restless In Remote Alaska

Out on the Alaskan island of Unalaska sits Makushin. This volcano is covered in a thick layer of ice and snow. And although it is not far — as the crow flies — from Dutch Harbor, it is extremely inaccessible. Yet, as part of its tasked mission, the Alaska Volcano Observatory must watch for signs that this volcano might be rumbling back to life.

Makushin is a volcano with a busy and sometimes violent history. The last known eruption from the caldera volcano was back in 1995; over the past few centuries, Makushin has produced at least a dozen blasts. Some of these eruptions were as large as VEI 3 (something close to the same size as the 2010 eruptions at Mount Merapi in Indonesia).

A Decade Of Sun

Published 24th June 2020

As of June 2020, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory — SDO — has now been watching the Sun non-stop for over a full decade. From its orbit in space around the Earth, SDO has gathered 425 million high-resolution images of the Sun, amassing 20 million gigabytes of data over the past 10 years. This information has enabled countless new discoveries about the workings of our closest star and how it influences the solar system.

With a triad of instruments, SDO captures an image of the Sun every 0.75 seconds. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument alone captures images every 12 seconds at 10 different wavelengths of light. This 10-year time lapse showcases photos taken at a wavelength of 17.1 nanometers, which is an extreme ultraviolet wavelength that shows the Sun’s outermost atmospheric layer — the corona. Compiling one photo every hour, the movie condenses a decade of the Sun into 61 minutes. The video shows the rise and fall in activity that occurs as part of the Sun’s 11-year solar cycle and notable events, like transiting planets and eruptions. The custom music, titled “Solar Observer,” was composed by musician Lars Leonhard (https://www.lars-leonhard.de/).

While SDO has kept an unblinking eye pointed towards the Sun, there have been a few moments it missed. The dark frames in the video are caused by Earth or the Moon eclipsing SDO as they pass between the spacecraft and the Sun. A longer blackout in 2016 was caused by a temporary issue with the AIA instrument that was successfully resolved after a week. The images where the Sun is off-center were observed when SDO was calibrating its instruments.

SDO and other NASA missions will continue to watch our Sun in the years to come, providing further insights about our place in space and information to keep our astronauts and assets safe.

Artificial Night Sky Poses Serious Threat To Coastal Species

Published 22nd June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/artificialni.jpg

The artificial lighting which lines the world's coastlines could be having a significant impact on species that rely on the moon and stars to find food, new research suggests.

Creatures such as the sand hopper (Talitrus saltator) orientate their nightly migrations based on the moon's position and brightness of the natural night sky.

However, a study by Bangor University and the University of Plymouth shows the presence of artificial light originating from cities several kilometres away (also known as artificial skyglow) disrupts the lunar compass they use when covering long distances.

Light Pollution Hides Milky Way From 80 Percent Of North Americans, Atlas Shows

Published 10th June 2020

The luminous glow of light pollution prevents nearly 80 percent of people in North America from seeing the Milky Way in the night sky.

That's according to a new atlas of artificial night sky brightness that found our home galaxy is now hidden from more than one-third of humanity.

While there are countries where the majority of people still live under pristine, ink-black sky conditions — places such as Chad, Central African Republic and Madagascar — more than 99 percent of the people living in the U.S. and Europe look up and see light-polluted skies.

The country with the worst light-pollution is Singapore, where researchers found that "the entire population lives under skies so bright that the eye cannot fully dark-adapt to night vision."

Evidence Supports 'Hot Start' Scenario & Early Ocean Formation On Pluto

Published 22nd June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/1-evidencesupp.jpg

The accretion of new material during Pluto's formation may have generated enough heat to create a liquid ocean that has persisted beneath an icy crust to the present day, despite the dwarf planet's orbit far from the sun in the cold outer reaches of the solar system.

This "hot start" scenario, presented in a paper published June 22 in Nature Geoscience, contrasts with the traditional view of Pluto's origins as a ball of frozen ice and rock in which radioactive decay could have eventually generated enough heat to melt the ice and form a subsurface ocean.

NASA's First Planetary Defence Mission Target Gets A New Name

Published 23rd June 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/nasasfirstpl.jpg

Nearly two decades ago, a near-Earth asteroid was discovered to have a moon and the binary system was given the name "Didymos"—Greek for "twin," a loose description of the larger main body and the smaller orbiting moon, which became unofficially known as Didymos B.

In 2022, that moon will be the target of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the first full-scale demonstration of an asteroid deflection technology for planetary defense. The DART spacecraft will execute a kinetic impact, deliberately crashing into the asteroid to change its motion in space. To mark this historic mission, Didymos B is getting an official name of its own: Dimorphos.

Comet NEOWISE Is Getting Really Bright

Published 23rd June 2020

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter near the orbit of Mercury on July 3rd. SOHO coronagraphs are monitoring the approach, and it's looking good.

The sun-baked comet is still intact. Moreover, comparing the comet to nearby reference stars, we see that it is brightening beyond magnitude +3. This should make Comet NEOWISE a naked-eye object when it emerges from the sun's glare in mid-July. SOHO will be monitoring the comet for the rest of the week.

A Waxing Gibbous Moon & Antares

Published 28th June 2020

On July 1 and 2, 2020 let the Moon introduce you to Antares. Antares is a red supergiant star. Any red-looking star that you can see with the unaided eye is either a red giant or red supergiant star.

This star, which is in the autumn of its years, is expected to explode as a supernova one of these days. No telling when that will be, however. It could happen tomorrow or a million years from now.

If Antares replaced the Sun in our solar system its circumference would extend beyond the orbit of Mars.

Antares is the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion. The red supergiant lies about 600 light-years from the Earth.

Published 26th June 2020

How did our Galaxy form? Is there only one way to form a spiral galaxy like ours, or can they form in different ways? And what role does the mysterious dark matter play in galaxy formation? One way to address these key questions is through the forensic, star-by-star analysis of nearby galaxies. By treating each star as a fossil of galactic evolution, we can piece together a road-map for how the beautiful spiral galaxies of the Universe are produced. In this talk, I’ll discuss what we know about the formation and evolution of the Milky Way and Andromeda, and how Galactic Archaeology can help us better understand the formation of all spiral galaxies.

Space News | Electrical Star & Planet Birth – Cosmic Z-pinch In Action

Published 25th June 2020

How do stars and planets form?

The solar nebular hypothesis of standard cosmology tells us that gravitational collapse and accretion are the processes that lead to the creation of planets and stars—formative processes that occur over countless eons of time.

In contrast, the Electric Universe model and plasma cosmology propose that the electromagnetic phenomenon called the Z-pinch, (also called zeta pinch or Bennett pinch after Willard Harrison Bennett 1903-1987), which is known as a dominant organizational phenomenon in the cosmos.

We explore the increasingly convincing evidence that both stars and planets do indeed form by cosmic Z-pinches.

Len Kasten | Dark Fleet: The Secret Nazi Space Program & The Battle For The Solar System

Published 25th June 2020

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81vql4aqC2L.jpg

The Nazis did not really lose World War II. They made it appear that way in order to divert attention from the alliance between the Fourth Reich and the race of aliens known as the Reptilians--an ancient galactic civilization obsessed with conquest and domination. After the German surrender in 1945, the Nazi-Reptilian alliance infiltrated the U.S. military-industrial complex. Through "Operation Paperclip,"ť the Nazis and Reptilians removed their political opponents, such as the Kennedys, and moved into policy-making positions in post-war America, infiltrating aerospace companies, banking, media, and the U.S. government, including NASA and the CIA. But their real target was not the United States--it was the solar system.

As Len Kasten reveals in startling detail--including revelations of antigravity propulsion technology, alien techniques of mass mind control, and hyperdimensional teleportation capabilities--the Nazi-Reptilian alliance used their newfound power, wealth, and influence to launch a Secret Space Program with interstellar spaceports in Antarctica and on Mars as well as an eleven-story base of operations on the Moon. They commenced mining and manufacturing operations on Mars and Ceres, forming colonies there and elsewhere in the solar system. And, most shocking, they have used thousands of human slaves, easily transported in their spaceships, for both work and sexual exploitation.

Sharing testimonies from American and British "supersoldiers"ť who participated in the "20 and Back"ť age-regression programs, Kasten reveals the various forces inside and outside government that are resisting the Nazis and thwarting Reptilian attempts to achieve total dominance of the planet and the solar system. The U.S.-led Secret Space Program has its own fleet of spaceships, the Solar Warden Space Armada, which patrols the edges of the solar system and poses a growing threat to the Nazi Dark Fleet.

On March 8th, 1994, civilians in western Michigan on the edge of Lake Michigan called 911 en masse about strange lights in the sky, described as mostly cylindrical, moving up and down in altitude, and having a vertical row of lights on them. They appeared to be coordinated, as one caller described them as moving in a circle.

This was backed up by a National Weather Service radar operator in Muskegon, MI, who was contacted by the 911 dispatcher and asked to look into it. In the tapes in this episode, which are in the public domain, you can hear the NWS official remark at the anomalous and possibly coordinated behavior of the objects, which he reported moved together in a triangle.

He states they were not storms or aircraft, and as time passes, he becomes gradually more distressed, as highlighted by the subtitle overlay.

Interestingly, Project Blue Book had several interesting cases in this area of Michigan, including several that civilians described as "metallic," but USAF officials deemed them astronomical in nature or insufficient data for analysis.

Schoolyard UFO Encounters Part One: Sightings

Published 28th June 2020

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51gY5M9ukVL.jpg

All across the world, schools are being targeted by UFOs. More than 100 documented cases are on record. These are typically long lasting, low level, daylight encounters viewed by large groups of witnesses. Something very profound is happening here.

This video is Part One of a two-part presentation on the history of schoolyard UFO encounters on our planet. Why are UFOs targeting schools? What happens when a UFO hovers over a school playground and is viewed by hundreds of witnesses, including teachers?

The cases shown here will answer these questions and more.

Part One covers dozens of sightings, starting as early as 1853 and continuing to the present day. There are cases of UFOs hovering at extremely low levels, sometimes causing panic on the playground. There are cases involving photographs and moving films. Two cases involve physical evidence in the form of angel hair. In some cases, there is a strong government response.

And this is just the beginning! While the sightings are amazing enough, even more astonishing are the many cases of landings and humanoids. Part Two of this presentation: "Schoolyard UFO Encounters Part Two: Landings and Humanoids," covers the cases of actual contact, revealing the truth behind the alien agenda of targeting schools.

All these cases and more have been collected in my book, "Schoolyard UFO Encounters: 100 True Accounts," now available on here (https://www.amazon.com/Schoolyard-UFO-Encounters-True-Accounts-ebook/dp/B07VN2J98M/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=officialweb0f-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=2be71196890edf2db8522bc2eeae7dcd&creativeASIN=B07VN2J98M).

Astronaut UFO Sightings Mysteriously Removed From Government UFO Study; Here They Are

Published 26th June 2020

https://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Frank-Borman-1964.jpg

For twenty-two years, from 1947 – 1969, the United States Air Force ran a trifecta of UFO research programs known as Projects Sign, Grudge and Blue Book. The public is most familiar with the latter of the three, undoubtedly due to the success of a History Channel series by the same name. However, lesser known to non-UFO-aficionados, is why those studies ended. That was due to a near fifteen-hundred page report (https://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/the-full-condon-committee-report-on-ufos-1968/) generated by what was known as the Condon Committee, which convened from 1966-1968 at the University of Colorado, to evaluate whether the further study of UFOs was worth it. Spoiler alert: they concluded UFOs were not worth the time. However, something strange has happened to that report over the years. A chunk of it went missing within the main government agency that disseminates it.

Exoplanet The Size Of Neptune Discovered By Astronomers

Published 29th June 2020

https://scitechdaily.com/images/Planet-Au-Mic-b-777x437.jpg

An exoplanet the size of Neptune has been discovered around the young star AU Microscopii, thanks in part to the work of Jonathan Gagné, a former iREx Banting postdoctoral researcher who is now a scientific advisor at the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

Astrophysicists have been searching for exoplanets in this system, a unique laboratory for studying planetary formation, for more than a decade. The breakthrough, announced today in Nature, was made possible in part by NASA’s TESS and Spitzer space telescopes.

Planet Earth Reaches Its Most Distant Point From The Sun For 2020

Published 29th June 2020

On Saturday July 4, Earth will reach aphelion, its maximum distance from the Sun this year. On July 4, 2020 the Earth's exact distance from the Sun at aphelion will be 94,507,635 miles (152,095,295 km).

The Earth's average distance from the Sun is about 93 million miles,
(150 million km) which is also known as 1 Astronomical Unit (AU).

The word aphelion comes from the Greek words apo meaning away, off, apart and Helios, for the Greek God of the Sun. Apart from the Sun.

Helios in Ancient Greek religion and myth, is the God and personification of the Sun, often depicted in art with a radiant crown and driving a horse-drawn chariot through the sky. Helios figures in several works of Greek mythology, poetry, and literature in which he is often described as the son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia and brother of the Goddesses Selene (the Moon) and Eos (the Dawn).

Earth's perihelion (minimum distance from the Sun) will occur on January 2, 2021. At that time, the Sun will be 91,399,454 miles (147,093,163 km) from Earth.

Planet Earth reaches its most distant point from the Sun for 2020 on Saturday, July 4.

If An Asteroid Was Heading For Earth, How Could We Stop It?

Published 29th June 2020

Agencies around the world are working to bring samples of asteroids back to Earth, like NASA’s Osiris-Rex and JAXA’s Hayabusa-2, because bringing a piece back is like looking into a time capsule from the universe. BUT asteroids pose a serious threat to Earth. And ESA and NASA have a unique plan to combat that particular problem: they’re going to slam a spacecraft into an asteroid.

But asteroids also post a serious threat to Earth and so ESA and NASA formed a scientific collaboration known as the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment, or AIDA, to combat this potential problem. The collab consists of two missions: NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, and ESA’s Hera Probe.

DART will smash into an asteroid in 2022 helping the AIDA mission study how effective a kinetic impactor would be in asteroid deflection and then four years later the Hera probe will arrive to do some assessments.

Find out more about the ins and outs of this space collaboration in this Countdown to Launch.

Asteroid Day Special Edition: Tunguska, Taurids & Terra

Published 30th June 2020

Looking back to the origin of the Taurid meteor stream and its fragmenting/disintegrations possibly timing with the climatic changes over the last 25k years, with one of its members having been the "Tunguska" object that exploded over Siberia in 1908, RC reviews the comparable explosive powers in nuclear testing and impact cratering events. The Shoemaker-Levy 9 Jovian impacts and the Tunguska airburst were supreme teaching events which Randall weaves into many learning moments for us! With a string of exclaiming headlines, he stresses the critical point that we must act on the fact that we live on a vulnerable planet...

At 12:20 CDT an activity registered.

Uploaders note:

Well..it's something. I think the whole world is cloudy. Every volcano I watch it's been cloudy and activity has been slow too. The 'Exploder' in Ecuador has this funny little timelapse feature. It gives you a view of the activity that happened in the past hour. I check this camera quite often. I'm hoping to catch a nice lava explosion. This is 1080X720, not a full screen. Rest assured, I'm on the job. Waiting and hoping. :D David

Reventador is an active stratovolcano that lies in the eastern Andes of Ecuador. It lies in a remote area of the national park of the same name, which is Spanish for "exploder". Since 1541 it has erupted over 25 times, although its isolated location means that many of its eruptions have gone unreported.
