Astronomers Discover A 'Monster' Quasar - Its Central Black Hole Has A Mass Of 1.5 Billion Suns

Published 29th June 2020

Astronomers have discovered the second most distant quasar ever found, using the international Gemini Observatory and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), Programs of NSF’s NOIRLab. It is also the first quasar to receive an indigenous Hawaiian name, Pōniuāʻena.

The quasar contains a monster black hole, twice the mass of the black hole in the only other quasar found at the same epoch, challenging the current theories of supermassive black hole formation and growth in the early Universe.

Proposed NASA Mission Would Visit Neptune's Curious Moon Triton

Published 16th June 2020

https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/discovery/20200616/PIA00317-16.jpg

When NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Neptune's strange moon Triton three decades ago, it wrote a planetary science cliffhanger.

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft ever to have flown past Neptune, and it left a lot of unanswered questions. The views were as stunning as they were puzzling, revealing massive, dark plumes of icy material spraying out from Triton's surface. But how? Images showed that the icy landscape was young and had been resurfaced over and over with fresh material. But what material, and from where?

How could an ancient moon six times farther from the Sun than Jupiter still be active? Is there something in its interior that is still warm enough to drive this activity?

A new mission competing for selection under NASA's Discovery Program aims to untangle these mysteries. Called Trident, like the three-pronged spear carried by the ancient Roman sea god Neptune, the team is one of four that is developing concept studies for new missions. Up to two will be selected by summer 2021 to become a full-fledged mission and will launch later in the decade.

NASA Is Considering The Trident Mission. Going Back To Neptune & Triton

Streamed & Published 30th June 2020

Earlier this year, NASA announced 4 new Discovery-class missions that they were considering. These are low-cost, rapidly-built missions that will help scientists understand some mystery in astronomy and planetary science.

One of these missions is called Trident, and it’s going to be targeting the Planet Neptune. And more specifically, it’s going to be providing close up pictures of its largest moon Triton.

NASA’s Tess Delivers New Insights Into An Ultrahot World

Published 30th June 2020

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/ubernode_alt_horiz/public/thumbnails/image/kelt9_year_with_star_still.jpg

Measurements from NASAs Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have enabled astronomers to greatly improve their understanding of the bizarre environment of KELT-9 b, one of the hottest planets known.

Located about 670 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus, KELT-9 b was discovered in 2017 because the planet passed in front of its star for a part of each orbit, an event called a transit. Transits regularly dim the stars light by a small but detectable amount.

Between July 18 and Sept. 11, 2019, as part of the mission's yearlong campaign to observe the northern sky, TESS observed 27 transits of KELT-9 b, and these observations allowed the team to model the systems unusual star and its impact on the planet.

KELT-9 b is a gas giant world about 1.8 times bigger than Jupiter, with 2.9 times its mass. Tidal forces have locked its rotation so the same side always faces its star. The planet swings around its star in just 36 hours on an orbit that carries it almost directly above both of the star's poles.

The close orbit means the planet's dayside temperature is around 7,800 degrees Fahrenheit (4,300 C), hotter than the surfaces of some stars. This intense heating also causes the planets atmosphere to stream away into space.

Its odd host star is about twice the size of the Sun and averages about 56 percent hotter. But it spins 38 times faster than the Sun, completing a full rotation in just 16 hours. Its rapid spin distorts the stars shape, flattening it at the poles and widening its midsection. This causes the stars poles to heat up and brighten while its equatorial region cools and dims, a phenomenon called gravity darkening. The result is a temperature difference across the stars surface of almost 1,500 F (800 C).

With each orbit, KELT-9 b twice experiences the full range of stellar temperatures, producing what amounts to a peculiar seasonal sequence. The planet experiences summer when it swings over each hot pole and winter when it passes over the stars cooler midsection. So KELT-9 b experiences two summers and two winters every year, with each season about nine hours.

KELT-9 b begins its transit near the star's bright poles, and then blocks less and less light as it travels over the star's dimmer equator. This asymmetry provides clues to the temperature and brightness changes across the stars surface, and they permitted the team to reconstruct the stars out-of-round shape, how its oriented in space, its range of surface temperatures, and other factors impacting the planet.

Do Hot Jupiters Form Close In, Or Do They Migrate? A Newly-Discovered Planet Might Help Answer This

Published 29th June 2020

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/image/baby-hot-jupiter-16.gif

For the sake of their study (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/young-giant-planet-offers-clues-to-formation-of-exotic-worlds), the team took a look at HIP 67522 b, an exoplanet that was discovered earlier this year by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). This exoplanet is about 10 times the diameter of Earth (roughly the same as Jupiter) and is so close to its host star that it only takes seven days to complete a full orbit.

These features also make HIP 67522 b easy to detect using the Transit Method, where astronomers monitor stars for periodic dips in brightness to determine the presence of planets (as well as their size and orbital period). However, this exoplanet still required confirmation using the infrared data from the now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope since young stars are known to have sunspots (which also lead to periodic dips in brightness.)

But what is more interesting is the fact that this hot Jupiter’s star (located about 490 light-years from Earth) is just 17 million years old. In effect, HIP 67522 b is the youngest hot Jupiter ever observed given that in all previous cases, hot Jupiters were found to be more than a billion years old. This could mean that this particular hot Jupiter is still in the process of evolving, thus allowing astronomers to test theories about gas giant migration.

Professor Matthew Szydagis | UFOs & Dark Matter

Streaming Live At Time Of Posting & Published 30th June 2020

What is the possible connection between UFOs and Dark Matter? A fascinating guest, Matthew Szydagis, to discuss his thoughts on nearly 25% of the universe being composed of a mysterious substance known as dark matter (while 70% of the cosmos is something called “dark energy”) and how craft, terrestrial or otherwise, might also be able to tap into this as the real-life “zero-point vacuum energy,”.

PROFESSOR MATTHEW SZYDAGIS received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University at Albany studying experimental particle astrophysics, in particular the direct detection of dark matter WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) and general particle detector development for “rare-event searches.”

He grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation right away with Season 1 from the age of 5, and simply fell in love with the character of Lieutenant Commander Data, realizing that science officer was the position for him. He became a physicist after being inspired by Star Trek, becoming one in order to make time travel and FTL travel a reality. But, he got “side-tracked” along the way to find dark matter!

Intelligent Disclosure | Forgotten UFO Recovery: 1941

Streamed & Published 30th May 2020

Richard and Tracey discuss what may be America's original UFO crash retrieval case: that which occurred outside of Cape Girardeau, MO, in April 1941. The world was a very different place, and the U.S. national security establishment was not even in its infancy. The event was unknown until the 1990s, when one highly credible witness, Charlotte Mann, came forward with the story of her grandfather, Reverend William Huffman. This is a truly fascinating story, and although corroboration has been limited to a few other individuals, many serious researchers think it really happened.

Major George Filer | Military UFO Encounters

Broadcast May 10th Published 2nd July 2020

Maj. George Filer belongs to the generation of pilots and airmen who first became aware of the strange aircraft showing up in the Earth's atmosphere after World War II. Award-winning investigative reporter John Guerra spent four years interviewing Filer, a decorated intelligence officer. In the first half, he joined Richard Syrett to discuss Filer's accounts of UFO reports. Guerra said that Filer was at first dubious of unidentified object reports, but was shaken out of his complacency by his own dramatic sighting from a refueling aircraft over the UK in 1962.

Pennsylvania - The UFO Hotbed & Derbyshire Named As UFO Hotspot

Published 8th July 2020

Pennsylvania was the fifth best state for UFO sightings from January 2019 through June 2020.

In that period Pennsylvanians reported 358 sightings of strange lights and objects in the sky to the National UFO Reporting Center, according to an analysis of the center’s database by SatelliteInternet.com, which researches satellite internet.

That placed Pennsylvania behind California, with 752 reported sightings; Florida, 567; Washington, 386 and Texas, 375.

And 2020 is shaping up as a record year for UFOs over Pennsylvania. From January-June 2020, Pennsylvanians have filed 135 reports, nearly double the 75 reports filed during the first half of 2019.

“Hovering triangular object with three white lights and one red,” read a May 26 report from Mars, Pennsylvania.

“A very bright orange glowing craft (that I thought was on fire) traveled in a low altitude heading south from the northeast,” reported someone in Bethlehem on May 23.

A March 21 report from Harrisburg noted, “Dozens of odd shaped lights traveling at snail pace in the sky. Some traveling in triangle formation and some alone. One large craft stood still mostly but moved on occasion ascending and descending. Large bright light. Family member reported seeing the same about a mile away as well as one flickering on and off with red lights. Definitely an ongoing thing seeing these craft at night.

UFOs have been reported in the skies over Pennsylvania 3,887 times, according to the National UFO Reporting Center, which has been gathering reports since 1947.

That ranks Pennsylvania eighth among all 50 states in total reported sightings of eerie lights, erratically moving aircraft and mysterious metal saucers.

California is No. 1, with 13,559 reports, followed by Alabama, 10,882; Florida, 6,534; Washington, 5,894; Texas, 4,969; New York, 4,689; Arizona, 4,028; Pennsylvania, 3,887; Illinois, 3,616; and Ohio, 3,566.

We May Finally Know Why Earth’s Magnetic North Keeps Moving

Published 8th July 2020

https://www.esa.int/var/esa/storage/images/esa_multimedia/images/2020/05/swirling_iron/22014856-1-eng-GB/Swirling_iron_pillars.png

Magnetic north keeps shifting, but we may finally know what’s causing it.

The Earth's magnetic north pole is shifting in two ways: It’s moving away from Canada and toward Siberia, and it is accelerating. In fact, it is accelerating so fast that we have had to update our models of Earth’s magnetic field ahead of schedule.

The reasoning behind why our magnetic poles move and flip has always been a mystery, until now.

A team of researchers from Leeds University think they have nailed down just what makes Earth's magnetic poles move: blobs.

The team from Leeds used 20 years of data collected by satellites, including ESA’s Swarm, and concluded that changes in flow at lower latitudes in Earth’s outer core have changed the magnetic flux, or the number of field lines, in two blobby areas.

For over a decade institutions like the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others have acted out "mock drills” of exactly the scenario that we now face. Was this just a coincidence? The global power elite have long since been aware that that the planet's life support systems are breaking down at blinding speed. Is the unfolding environmental unraveling directly connected to numerous agendas that are now being carried out?

NASA’s STEREO-A Spacecraft Spots Comet Encke Passing Near the Sun

Published 11th July 2020

Comet NEOWISE deservedly grabbing all the attention, but in other news, comet 2P/Encke has finally perked up.

The stuff at the left of the video is solar outflow. Lots of solar wind action going on in the tail, as it always does with this comet.

By early July, skywatchers at southern latitudes will nab the comet shining around magnitude 7.5 to 8 as it crosses Cancer in evening twilight. Moving rapidly eastward, the comet fades quickly, dimming to 11th magnitude by month's end.

Comet Encke has the shortest orbital period of any known comet within our solar system. It takes 3.30 years for Encke to orbit the Sun once. Its nucleus measures approximately 2,98 miles (4.8 kilometers) in diameter.

Comet NEOWISE Has A Super-Sized Nucleus - It Is Now Visible In The Evening Sky

Published 12th July 2020

Now we know why Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is so bright. Its nucleus is huge. Researchers working with NASA's NEOWISE spacecraft have analyzed infrared emissions from the comet's core in discovery images from March 2020.

The glow is proportional to the size of the nucleus--the nugget of dust and frozen gas at the heart of the comet. "From its infrared signature, we can tell that the nucleus is about 5 kilometers across," say researchers. 5 km is extremely large for a comet approaching this close to the sun (think Comet McNaught-sized), which explains its high activity.

On July 3rd, Comet NEOWISE passed by the sun near the orbit of Mercury. The oversized nucleus helped it survive the encounter, which some comets would have found too hot to handle. Now NEOWISE's sun-heated core is spewing massive amounts of dust and gas, creating a worldwide sensation.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe was at the right place at the right time to capture a unique view of comet NEOWISE on July 5, 2020. Processed data from the WISPR instrument on NASA’s Parker Solar Probe shows greater detail in the twin tails of comet NEOWISE. The lower, broader tail is the comet’s dust tail, while the thinner, upper tail is the comet’s ion tail.

For Comet NEOWISE, the future looks bright. Its large nucleus is a reservoir of dust and gas that should continue to fill the comet's double tail with visible material for weeks to come.

NEOWISE is now visible in the evening sky. At the moment "Evening Comet" NEOWISE is still a horizon-hugger, low and hard to see. However, it will climb higher in the sunset sky as July unfolds. After July 15th, sunset will be the time and place to see the comet as it rockets northward toward the Big Dipper.

The UAE is about to send its first probe to Mars, making history as the first interplanetary mission for the Arab world.

July 2020 is a crowded month for Mars missions, but one mission in particular will be making history in more ways than one.

The Emirates Hope Probe, the first interplanetary mission for the Arab world (the country’s national space program only started in 2006), could provide us with the most comprehensive picture of the Martian atmosphere yet,

In order to get the project off the ground, the team worked with a handful of U.S. institutions, including University of Colorado Boulder and UC Berkeley, setting their sights on a better understanding of Mars’ atmosphere.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is the first national observatory to have been named for a woman and it currently houses the world’s largest optical lens ever built.

Measuring 1.55 meters in diameter, this piece of glass is one of three lenses that will be the eyes for a new astronomical camera. The optical lens weighs more than 3 tons and has an enormous field of view, where light from billions of galaxies will come into focus. By recording images of the entire sky every few days, this camera will produce a time-lapse movie of the universe.

Keeping A Steady Eye On Sea Level Change From Space

Published 13th July 2020

https://scx2.b-cdn.net/gfx/news/hires/2020/keepingastea.jpg

Over the course of nearly three decades, an uninterrupted series of satellites has circled our planet, diligently measuring sea levels. The continuous record of ocean height that they've built has helped researchers reveal the inner workings of weather phenomena like El Niño and to forecast how much the ocean could encroach on coastlines around the world. Now, engineers and scientists are preparing two identical satellites to add to this legacy, extending the dataset another decade.

Both spacecraft are a part of the Sentinel-6/Jason-CS (Continuity of Service) mission, a U.S.-European collaboration that aims to make some of the most accurate measurements of sea levels around the world. The first satellite to launch, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, will lift off in November. Its twin, Sentinel-6B, will launch in 2025. Both will assess sea levels by sending electromagnetic signals down to the ocean and measuring how long it takes for them to return to the spacecraft.

Researchers Find Younger Age For Earth's Moon

Published 13th July 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/59-researchersf.jpg

The moon formed a little later than previously assumed. When a Mars-sized protoplanet was destroyed in a collision with the young Earth, a new body was created from the debris ejected during this collision, which became the moon. Planetary geophysicists at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), led by Maxime Maurice, together with researchers at the University of Münster, have used a new numerical model to reconstruct the time at which the event occurred—4.425 billion years ago. The previous assumptions about the formation of the moon were based on an age of 4.51 billion years—that, is 85 million years earlier than the new calculations reveal. The scientists have reported their findings in Science Advances.

Ganymede: Jupiter's Oceanic Moon!

Published 12th July 2020

The Finding And Naming Of Ganymede

At present, Jupiter has 79 moons, some of which have only been discovered recently. But in regards to Ganymede, it may have an origin that is far beyond the histories of the other moons.
Chinese astronomical records report that in 365 BC, Gan De detected what might have been a moon of Jupiter, probably Ganymede, with the naked eye. However, Gan De reported the color of the companion as reddish, which is puzzling since the moons are too faint for their color to be perceived with the naked eye. Sh* Shen and Gan De together made fairly accurate observations of the five major planets.
On January 7th, 1610, Galileo Galilei observed what he thought were three stars near Jupiter, including what turned out to be Ganymede, Callisto, and one body that turned out to be the combined light from Io and Europa; the next night he noticed that they had moved. On January 13th, he saw all four at once for the first time, but had seen each of the moons before this date at least once. By January 15th, Galileo came to the conclusion that the stars were actually bodies orbiting Jupiter. Thus, the discovery of the moons.
Galileo originally called Jupiter's moons the Medicean planets, after the Medici family and referred to the individual moons numerically as I, II, III, and IV. Galileo's naming system would be used for a couple of centuries.
It wouldn't be until the mid-1800's that the names of the Galilean moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, would be officially adopted, and only after it became apparent that naming moons by number would be very confusing as new additional moons were being discovered.
In mythology, Ganymede was a beautiful young boy who was carried to Olympus by Zeus (the Greek equivalent of the Roman god Jupiter) disguised as an eagle. Ganymede became the cupbearer of the Olympian gods. The Greek/Roman pantheons are the epicenter of many names of both planets and moons in our solar system.

Orbits and Rotations
Ganymede orbits Jupiter at a distance of 1,070,400 km, third among the Galilean satellites, and completes a revolution every seven days and three hours. Which indeed means that a "Day" on Ganymede is a week here on Earth, that would be something that would take some getting used to no doubt.
Like most known moons, Ganymede is tidally locked, with one side always facing toward the planet, hence its day is seven days and three hours. Its orbit is very slightly eccentric and inclined to the Jovian equator, with the eccentricity and inclination changing quasi-periodically due to solar and planetary gravitational perturbations on a timescale of centuries.
Ganymede participates in orbital resonances with Europa and Io: for every orbit of Ganymede, Europa orbits twice and Io orbits four times. Conjunctions (alignment on the same side of Jupiter) between Io and Europa occur when Io is at periapsis and Europa at apoapsis. Conjunctions between Europa and Ganymede occur when Europa is at periapsis. The longitudes of the Io–Europa and Europa–Ganymede conjunctions change with the same rate, making triple conjunctions impossible. Such a complicated resonance is called the Laplace resonance.
There are two hypotheses for the origin of the Laplace resonance among Io, Europa, and Ganymede: that it is primordial and has existed from the beginning of the Solar System; or that it developed after the formation of the Solar System. A possible sequence of events for the latter scenario is as follows: Io raised tides on Jupiter, causing Io's orbit to expand (due to conservation of momentum) until it encountered the 2:1 resonance with Europa; after that the expansion continued, but some of the angular moment was transferred to Europa as the resonance caused its orbit to expand as well; the process continued until Europa encountered the 2:1 resonance with Ganymede. Eventually the drift rates of conjunctions between all three moons were synchronized and locked in the Laplace resonance.

Composition
Ganymede has three main layers. A sphere of metallic iron at the center (the core, which generates a magnetic field), a spherical shell of rock (mantle) surrounding the core, and a spherical shell of mostly ice surrounding the rock shell and the core. The ice shell on the outside is very thick, maybe 800 km (497 miles) thick.

NASA Is Updating Its Guidelines On How To Prevent Contamination Of The Solar System

Published 9th July 2020

After years of debate, NASA plans to update its guidelines for how much biological contamination of other worlds will be allowed while the agency explores the Solar System. The new rules would relax some of the agency’s requirements for how to explore the Moon and Mars — two high-profile destinations where NASA hopes to send astronauts in the coming years.

For decades, NASA has followed fairly strict rules about how much biological contamination is considered acceptable whenever the agency sends probes — or people — to other planets. It’s a concept known as planetary protection, and it has a legal basis in a treaty signed more than 50 years ago. Called the Outer Space Treaty, it challenges nations to explore other worlds “so as to avoid their harmful contamination” and to not bring back any alien microbes from other worlds that could cause harm to Earth.

Space Weather News | Two Solar Storms, One Hits Earth

Published 14th July 2020

This week our Sun launched two solar storms, one of which was Earth-directed! The storm has hit, right on time and all through the night people have been getting some amazing aurora shots down to mid-latitudes along with comet NEOWISE (as far south as Michigan in the USA, from what Ive seen thus far)! If you are a member of my Patreon community or follow me on Twitter, you got an early warning of this solar storm and hopefully got some once-in-a-lifetime shots! This solar storm is now waning, but should continue over the next day or so before things return to quiet. As for our star, it continues to be spotless, which means the solar flux is in the high 60s and radio propagation on Earth's dayside continues to be poor. However, this low solar flux means GPS reception on the dayside should be pretty good-- just be careful on Earth's nightside with the ongoing solar storm. Especially if you are near aurora or near dawn or dusk, your GPS reception will likely be unreliable. Learn more details about this ongoing solar storm, how long aurora will last, and see what else our Sun has in store this week!

How Long Is The Earth?

How far would the Earth stretch if you cut it up into Minecraft sized 1m cubes and lay them in a line through space? What about if you arrange it into a square?

To understand why, join me on this thought experiment voyage through the spatial dimensions we call home - expect tennis ball stars, galactic moving vans and homeopathic swimming pools.

A Five Hour Deep Dive Into The Wilson UFO Leak

Streamed & Published 30th May 2020

https://richarddolanmembers.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Wilson-Leak.002.jpeg

By now most people following the field of UFOs and ufology are at least somewhat aware of the notes known as the Wilson Document, or the Core Secrets Document, or the Davis-Wilson notes. These are 13 pages of typed notes written by Dr. Eric Davis in 2002, after he met with a recently retired Admiral named Thomas R. Wilson. Wilson had recently been head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the DIA, and head of Intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The subject of their conversation concerned Wilson's failed attempt five years earlier to gain access to a deeply classified UFO program concerned with studying an intact craft "not made by man."

Richard's guest for this program is an anonymous researcher known only as Mr X. This individual wants his anonymity and we are respecting that desire. Previously, Mr. X did a three hour interview on this subject at another Youtube Channel, Project Unity. The interview with Richard was initially intended to be a short one-hour version; instead they went for five hours, by the end of which Richard was starting to lose his voice.

This is a very detailed breakdown of the document, with a great deal of engaging conversation throughout. This is a truly deep dive into the UFO Leak of the Century. Before the interview begins, Richard provides a 9-minute overview of what is to follow.

On July 16, 2020, NASA made their first images from ESA/NASA’s Solar Orbiter available to the public. These are the closest pictures ever captured of the sun.

Solar Orbiter is an international collaboration between the European Space Agency, or ESA, and NASA, to study our closest star, the Sun.

Solar Orbiter carries six imaging instruments, each of which studies a different aspect of the Sun.

Principal investigator David Berghmans, an astrophysicist at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Brussels, points out what he calls “campfires” dotting the Sun in EUI’s images - see the arrows.

Top Russian Space Official Dismisses NASA’s Moon Plans, Considering A Lunar Base With China Instead

Published 15th July 2020

The head of Russia’s space organization criticized the current United States plan to return astronauts to the moon as “a big political project,” saying his country is instead speaking with China about establishing a lunar base of operations.

NASA last year announced its Artemis program, the agency’s plan to fulfill President Donald Trump’s order in 2017 to return Americans to the surface of the moon by 2024. Additionally, NASA in May unveiled the “Artemis Accords” — a set of principles it seeks to use as the basis of international agreements with other countries about using and operating in space, especially as the U.S. returns to the moon.

Spectacular Double Meteor Shower Set To Put On A Dazzling Display

Published 17th July 2020

Every year in late July, the Earth passes through the debris left by two comets. This year, both meteor showers peak on the same night.

A celestial traffic jam may be on tap in July 28-29, as two meteor showers combine forces to put on a brilliant sky show. The Delta Aquarids meteor shower and the Alpha Capricornids set to put on a dazzling display. Together the showers will produce anywhere between 30 and 40 shooting stars per hour under clear dark skies.

Delta Aquariid meteors leave persistent trains – glowing ionized gas trails that last a second or two after the meteor has passed. The meteors burn up in the upper atmosphere about 60 miles (100 km) above Earth’s surface.

The best viewing hours are after midnight and before dawn for all time zones around the world. Find an open sky away from artificial lights and don’t worry too much about radiant points. The meteors will appear in all parts of the sky.

The Delta Aquariid meteor shower is officially active from about July 12 to August 23 each year. It favors the Southern Hemisphere, though is still visible from mid-northern latitudes.

The Alpha Capricornids are active from July 3 through August 15 with a "plateau-like" maximum centered on July 30. What is notable about this shower is the number of bright fireballs produced during its activity period. This shower is seen equally well on either side of the equator.

Here's How to See Comet NEOWISE Just After Sunset

Published 17th July 2020

Observers in the Northern Hemisphere are hoping to catch a glimpse of Comet NEOWISE as it zips through the inner solar system before it speeds away into the depths of space. Discovered on March 27, 2020 by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission, Comet NEOWISE is putting on a dazzling display for skywatchers before it disappears, not to be seen again for another 6,800 years.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of Comet NEOWISE before it’s gone, there are several observing opportunities over the coming days when it will become increasingly visible shortly after sunset in the northwest sky. If you’re looking at the sky without the help of observation tools, Comet NEOWISE will likely look like a fuzzy star with a bit of a tail, so using binoculars or a small telescope is recommended to get the best views of this object.

For those hoping to see Comet Neowise for themselves, here’s what to do:

Find a spot away from city lights with an unobstructed view of the sky.

Just after sunset, look below the Big Dipper in the northwest sky.

If you have them, bring binoculars or a small telescope to get the best views of this dazzling display.

Each night, the comet will continue rising increasingly higher above the northwestern horizon.

Twenty Stunning Images Of Comet NEOWISE

Published 12th July 2020

Comet Neowise is paying a visit to the inner solar system for the first time in 6,800 years. The comet has been getting brighter and brighter in the early morning sky. Neowise is one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-solar system "intruder" that might become known as the Great Comet of 2020, NASA said.

Although it's visible with the naked eye, a simple telescope or pair of binoculars can reveal more details, especially when it is seen before twilight in the morning or after twilight in the evening.

The comet survived its recent closest approach to the sun, and is now headed back toward the outer solar system. Measuring about 3 miles across, Neowise is considered a fairly large comet

Comet NEOWISE, is a retrograde comet with a near-parabolic orbit discovered on March 27, 2020 by the NEOWISE space telescope. The comet is low in the morning sky just above the northeastern horizon and below Capella close to the glare of twilight. It can be clearly seen with the naked eye if one knows where to look. The comet is expected to remain visible to the naked eye throughout July 2020.

Thirty Seven Volcanoes Found On Venus

Published 21st July 2020

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/MFdsbyJvXGhiisW5NPwpTC-650-80.jpg

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. As the second-brightest natural object in the night sky after the Moon, Venus can cast shadows and can be, on rare occasion, visible to the naked eye in broad daylight. Venus lies within Earth's orbit, and so never appears to venture far from the Sun, either set in the west just after dusk or rising in the east a bit before dawn. Venus orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth day

Scientists have long known that Venus remained active long after fellow rocky planets Mercury and Mars lost their geological mojo. The second rock from the sun sports far fewer craters than those two worlds, a count that's consistent with a global resurfacing event some 500 million to 700 million years ago.

The researchers, led by geophysicist Anna Gülcher of ETH Zürich in Switzerland, used computer simulations to model in unprecedented detail the formation and evolution of Venus' ring-shaped volcanic structures, which are called coronae.

Animation: Earth’s Magnetic Field Changes Over Time

Published 22nd July 2020

Earth is surrounded by a constantly changing magnetic field that shields our habitat against harmful radiation from cosmic rays and the solar wind. A new study in AGU’s journal Reviews of Geophysics summarizes what scientists currently know about how Earth’s magnetic field has evolved over the past 100,000 years.

This animation shows how the intensity of Earth’s magnetic field changed from 44,000 to 38,000 years ago. Around 41,000 years ago, a geomagnetic excursion happened, when the global geomagnetic field intensity reduced dramatically. This event, known as the Laschamp excursion, is the best-documented geomagnetic excursion; evidence of it has been found in geological records around the world. You can see the intensity of the field change from pink (strong) to white (weak) as time progresses.

Comet NEOWISE Is Approaching Earth

Published 22nd July 2020

Tomorrow night may be your best chance to see Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) for the next 6,800 years. On July 23rd, the comet makes its closest approach to Earth--only 0.63 AU (103 million km) away. It's still visible to the naked eye (barely) from dark sky sites, but will fade as it recedes after this week.

If you can't see the comet after the sky fades to black on Thursday, try using binoculars. Even a little magnification brings NEOWISE into view. Short exposures with digital cameras reveal the comet's magnificent double tail.

Comet NEOWISE is now in the constellation Ursa Major. To find it, look north-northwest after sunset and let the stars of the Big Dipper be your guide.
And if you miss the comet ... no worries. It'll be back in 6,800 years!

Two massive exoplanets are circling the star along wide, sweeping orbits. Earlier this year, astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile snapped an incredible picture of the star system.

There are hundreds of pages of disputed Majestic 12 documents, many lesser known that came out in the 1990s. Every individual who received these admitted later they believed they were fake, but couldn't be sure how much of the material was added.

Rather than a simple scheme to make money from these, there is testimony from government insiders the Air Force Office of Special Investigations was running a coordinated disinformation campaign meant to mislead ufologists.

What did some of these documents say? How can we determine they're likely disinformation? And why would there be an effort to divide UFO researchers, or muddy the waters any time someone brings up a UFO information control group?

Leslie Kean & Ralph Blumenthal | First Interview On Their Latest NYT Article

Published 25th July 2020

I was fortunate enough to conduct and I am now proud to present, the very first interview with both Ralph Blumenthal & Leslie Kean regarding their long-standing and ongoing investigations into the secrecy apparatus behind the UFO / UAP Issue which has recently culminated into a brand new article in The New York Times that quotes a high-level senior scientist (Dr. Eric W. Davis) and a former senate majority leader (Senator Harry Reid) on the subject of UFO / UAP Crash Retrieval Programs that may be operating within the US Government and perhaps even outside of the USG's purview via corporate aerospace & defence contractors.

I imagine we can expect further publications from these two journalists on this topic and although some of us within the UFO community feel that more could have been added, I consider this article to be a tremendous victory for the UFO community. The ball just got pushed a little further down the field.

History Of The UFO

Published 25th July 2020

The word UFO is an abbreviation which comes from the initial letters of the words ‘unidentified flying object’. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term ‘unidentified flying object’ goes back at least to the 1950's: it is recorded in 1953, in a book by the US aviator and writer Donald Keyhoe. The OED also gives a citation in 1956 by Edward Ruppelt, an officer in the USAF, stating that he had invented the term as a more general one to replace the earlier description for such objects, flying saucer.

Most of our viewers are very well acquainted with the term UFO and are likely familiar with the many sightings and contact accounts since the 1940's and the entire 20th century for that matter. But, was this the only period in human history where such unexplained craft appeared? The answer is of course no. There are literally hundreds of written accounts from around the world prior to the 20th century describing unusual craft in the skies. The main difference in those accounts as compared to the modern ones, is the lack of photographs and videos that record the event. With that said, it is the Archive’s opinion that the lack of such modern recording technology does not make these written accounts any less credible.

This presentation begins with the written accounts from the 19th century and then stretches back several millennia to catalog sightings of UFOs before they were actually called UFOs. Of course, we cannot itemize every single event throughout our known history, but we are certain that we have enough to satisfy the curiosity of even the most experienced UFO aficionados among us.

Southern Delta Aquariids & Alpha Capricornids 2020

Published 27th July 2020

Every year in late July, the Earth passes through the debris left by two comets, one that creates the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower and one that creates the Alpha Capricornid meteor shower. Both meteor showers peak on the same night: July 28th.

The Southern Delta Aquariid meteoroid stream is thought to come from Comet Machholz (96P), which passes by Earth’s orbit every 5.3 years and comes unusually close to the Sun. The Alpha Capricornid meteoroid stream comes from Comet NEAT (169/P), which passes by Earth’s orbit every 4.2 years. The Earth moves through these streams in the same part of its orbit each year, so these two meteor showers are always active in our skies during July and August.

Jezero Crater, Landing Site For The Mars Perseverance Rover

Published 28th July 2020

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/full_width_feature/public/thumbnails/image/jezerocrater.jpg

This image of Jezero Crater, the landing site for the Mars Perseverance Rover, was taken by instruments on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which regularly takes images of potential landing sites for future missions. NASA chose Jezero crater as the landing site for the Perseverance rover because scientists believe the area was once flooded with water and was home to an ancient river delta.

Jezero crater tells a story of the on-again, off-again nature of the wet past of Mars. More than 3.5 billion years ago, river channels spilled over the crater wall and created a lake. Scientists see evidence that water carried clay minerals from the surrounding area into the crater lake. Conceivably, microbial life could have lived in Jezero during one or more of these wet times. If so, signs of their remains might be found in lakebed or shoreline sediments.

Read all about it here: https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/jezero-crater-landing-site-for-the-mars-perseverance-rover

This video highlights two mosaics of the Jezero crater landing site on Mars made by the USGS Astrogeology Science Center to support the Mars 2020 mission, as well as several key locations that the Perseverance rover may visit once it is on the surface. The larger mosaic is composed of images from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The higher-resolution mosaic is composed of images from the HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. In both mosaics, the images were aligned to each other and to the planet with unprecedented precision. The high-resolution mosaic was used to identify hazards in the landing ellipse. The resulting hazard map and the CTX mosaic will be carried onboard the spacecraft, which will use them to steer away from hazards as it lands.

More on the Rover

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover is heading to the Red Planet to search for signs of ancient life, collect samples for future return to Earth and help pave the way for human exploration. The rover will carry with it several technology demonstrations including a helicopter, which will attempt humanity's first powered flight on another planet. Perseverance has a new set of science instruments and the ability to “self-drive” on the Martian surface.

The Perseverance rover is scheduled to launch from Space Launch Complex 41 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center as early as July 30. It is set to land at Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

Newly Spotted Asteroid Just Zipped By Earth Grazing Path Of Satellites In Geostationary Orbit

Published 29th July 2020

A car-sized asteroid discovered over the weekend made a close flyby of Earth yesterday (July 28), passing our planet at a range that rivals the orbits of some high-flying satellites.

The asteroid 2020 OY4, which was first detected on Sunday (July 26), made its closest approach today at 1:31 a.m. EDT (0531 GMT) when it zipped by Earth at a speed of about 27,700 mph (44,600 km/h), according to the European Space Agency. The asteroid is just under 15 feet (5 meters) wide and posed no impact risk to Earth, but did approach the flight paths of geosynchronous satellites.

ESA's tool listed the closest distance as about 21,900 miles (35,170 km), or just inside the satellite orbit ring.

Asteroids the size of 2020 OY4 fly by Earth several times a month, NASA officials have said in the past. This month (July 2020) three asteroids slightly larger than 2020 OY4 actually hit the Earth, but broke up harmlessly in the atmosphere, astronomers said.

107,000 Planned Satellites By 2029

Published 29th July 2020

This video depicts the spacecraft applications that have been filed with the FCC, ITU and in some cases from announcements in mainstream media. Note that the orbit raise and disposal phases are not modeled in the video. This represents the maximum large constellation traffic we can anticipate, as some of the operators filing these applications may not survive the whole process of getting their application approved, obtaining the necessary funding, making their business case close, obtaining the necessary launch and operations tempo required to build, deploy, sustain and reenter so many spacecraft. But even if a conservative 20% of the 107,000 spacecraft shown in this video attain operational status, that represents a 10X increase in the number of active spacecraft being operated today.

Diamonds Could Unlock The Mysteries Of Earth’s Core

Published 30th July 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/2-journeytothe.jpg

We’ve never been able to journey to the center of the Earth, but thanks to an incredibly innovative experiment, we may not have to go there to understand what it's like.

Historically, we’ve explored our planet's interior using seismic measurements—basically, measuring vibrations that pass through the Earth to tell us more about what’s going on in there. Thanks to research like this we know the Earth has an innermost, super dense solid core, surrounded by a less dense, liquid outer core

But now, an exciting new experiment tells us details about the Earth’s core that we’ve never had access to before by using something called a diamond anvil cell, two diamonds pressed together to create a tremendous amount of pressure, to achieve its results.

By putting a sample of a material in a diamond anvil cell we can see how it behaves under these extreme pressures, which is exactly what these researchers did with liquid iron. Iron is not only the 6th most abundant element in the universe, it’s also thought to make up a large part of the core of our own planet, and the cores of Mercury and Mars.

Earth Is Entering A Stream Of Debris From The Perseid Meteor Shower

Published 3rd August 2020

Earth is entering a stream of debris from giant Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on the morning of Aug. 12th with many fireballs slicing through the light of a last-quarter Moon. NASA's network of all-sky cameras is already detecting a few Perseid fireballs every night over the USA.

Comet Swift-Tuttle has a huge nucleus--about 26 km in diameter. Most other comets are much smaller, with nuclei only a few kilometers across. As a result, Comet Swift-Tuttle produces a large number of meteoroids, many of which are hefty enough to produce fireballs.

Indeed, a 6-year study by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office found that the Perseids produce more fireballs than any other annual shower.

During the Perseid meteor shower, which lasts for weeks, comet debris particles a few cm wide hit the atmosphere with an average speed of 59.6 km/s (133,350 mph). The average magnitude of the resulting fireballs is -3.7, about as bright as Venus. More fireballs are in the offing as Earth moves deeper into the comet's debris stream. Generally speaking, the best time to look is during the dark hours before sunrise when the shower's radiant is high in the sky.

Galactic cosmic rays that penetrate the Martian surface can potentially trigger the kind of chemical reactions that biological life can harness for metabolism. That’s according to a new study published July 28, 2020 in Scientific Reports, an online peer-reviewed journal published by Nature. Researcher Dimitra Atri – of New York University Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates – is lead author of the new study, which peers (theoretically) below the Martian surface to see how likely it is for life to survive. It is exciting to contemplate that life could survive in such a harsh environment, as few as 2 meters [6 feet] below the surface of Mars.

NASA's Missing UFO Reports: Found

Published 28th July 2020

00:00 Intro

4:00 Condon Report missing chapter
5:19 Gemini 4 first UFO sighting
6:50 Gemini 4 second UFO sighting
7:24 Gemini 7 UFO sighting
8:54 Conclusion

The Condon Report, funded by the U.S. Air Force, was published in 1968 and suggested continued study of UFOs would yield no scientific discoveries. Buried in the report, though, are three "unidentifieds" determined to be UFOs seen by astronauts in Earth's orbit in 1965.

The astronauts on Gemini 4 and 7 saw the objects, and after thorough examination, even the Condon analyst deemed them a puzzle and ruled them unknown.

This is curious for two reasons. One: the chapter of astronaut sightings has mysteriously gone missing from many mainstream versions of the report, such as the primary copy on file at the Defense Technical Information Center. It is also missing from the Internet Archive. Only in an obscure Dept. of Commerce database can we find this missing chapter.

Two: NASA's own form letter they sent to UFO inquiries for decades cited the Condon Report as evidence that it didn't need to look at UFOs, and even claimed the astronaut sighings were nothing, at odds with Condon. This comes despite internal memos stating NASA was informally collecting UFO debris under a nicknamed operation "UFOHEAP."

UFOs Over Prisons

Published 1st August 2020

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51pI2pEWD1L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

UFOs are known to be attracted to technological installations such as power stations, military bases and more, including, evidently, prisons. These are not coincidental fly-bys. In these cases prisons are being directly targeted. The objects hover at very low levels for long periods of time. They are often viewed by both prison officials and inmates.

There are more than 20 cases on record. These are not simple sightings, but also include physiological effects and strange electromagnetic effects. In a few cases, photographs have been taken. There's at least one case of a landing. Humanoids have been seen, and there's even an apparent abduction. Clearly something very profound is happening here!

San Quentin Prison, Lebanon Correctional Institute, Colorado State Penitentiary and many others have all had encounters. Some locations have been visited repeatedly. The question, of course, is why? After watching this presentation, you will know the answer.

For those who are interested in learning more about UFOs over prisons, I collected many of these cases in chapter six of my book, "Not from Here: Volume Three," now available here

John Greenewald | The NYT UFO Retractions

Recorded & Published 3rd August 2020

In this broadcast John Greenewald will be discussing the recent articles from the NYT, the Wilson Document and what parts of all of this may be fact and/or fiction.

John began researching the secret inner workings of the U.S. Government in 1996 at the age of fifteen. He targeted such groups as the CIA, FBI, Pentagon, Air Force, Army, Navy, NSA, DIA, and countless others. Greenewald utilized the Freedom of Information Act to gain access to thousands of records. He accumulated an astonishing number of documents on topics related to UFOs, the JFK Assassination, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and top secret aircraft.

Greenewald named his online archive “The Black Vault.” His teenage project turned into the largest private online collection anywhere in the world, with million of pages of material. At the age of twenty-one, Greenewald published his first book, Beyond UFO Secrecy, in 2002. It was later put into a second expanded edition, and was re-published by Galde Press in January, 2008.

Space News | Black Hole Or Cosmic Light Switch?

Published 29th July 2020

A new scientific paper describes an unprecedented and “mind boggling” event around a so-called black hole – an event so rapid, energetic and completely unexpected to astronomers, it challenges the very bedrock of black hole theory.

A team of scientists studying an active galactic nucleus observed the brightness of a so-called black hole corona drop by a factor of 10,000 in less than one year. A co-author of a new paper on the discovery stated, "We expect that luminosity changes this big should vary on timescales of many thousands to millions of years. But in this object, we saw it change by 10,000 over a year, and it even changed by a factor of 100 in eight hours, which is just totally unheard of and really mind-boggling."

In fact, the conundrum of cosmological entities such as galaxies, quasars and stars experiencing seemingly impossibly rapid evolutionary changes is an increasingly common conundrum. This Space News episode explores why such rapid cosmological events illuminate the electrical circuitry that pervades the cosmos.

A GOLDen Way to Study Space Weather

Published 4th August 2020

A NASA mission is observing airglow in the upper atmosphere and uncovering what it tells us about Earth’s space weather system.

One of NASA’s newest missions, called Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=991FXaiiMS8) (GOLD), is revealing how the upper fringes of Earth’s atmosphere affect space weather by observing atmospheric airglow in unprecedented detail. In a new study, Eastes et al. report early data from the mission, including observations of how neutral gases in the thermosphere interact with charged particles in Earth’s ionosphere and how these interactions respond to disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar storms hazardous to critical infrastructure.

Space Weather Bill Clears Senate, Creates Pilot Program At NOAA

Published 3rd August 2020

The Senate passed the PROSWIFT space weather bill on July 27, another step along what has been a long path for the legislation. It is a compromise with a version adopted by the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee in January that includes a provision calling for NOAA to create a commercial space weather data pilot program akin to its commercial weather data program. All that is needed now is passage by the House and a signature from the President, which would mark the end of a five-year effort.

The legislation assigns roles and responsibilities to agencies involved in space weather research and forecasting and ensures coordination within the government to better predict severe space weather events and mitigate their impact. It also calls for coordination between the government and the non-governmental space weather community including academia, the commercial sector, and international partners.

In A First, Astronomers Find An Exoplanet By Using Radio Waves And A Wobbly Star

Published 5th August 2020

https://www.sciencealert.com/images/2020-08/010-exoplanet-1.jpg

The hunt for exoplanets in our galaxy is a deeply important endeavour. The more exoplanets we find, the better we can understand our own Solar System - and how life emerges in the Universe. To date, over 4,000 exoplanets have been confirmed - but a new discovery could widen the search, helping us to find exoplanets that previously have proven too difficult to detect.

The newly discovered exoplanet, with a mass comparable to that of Saturn, orbits a very small, cool red dwarf right at the lower mass limit for main sequence stars, and located about 35 light-years away. However, it's not just the planet, nor the star, that's so groundbreaking here.

So many sightings occur because the witness was alerted by a dog barking, or barnyard animals making sounds of alarm, but that aspect is usually just a brief mention in reports. Animals have keen senses and don’t have an imagination, so their reactions prove that something real is happening.

The Summer Triangle Graces The August Night Sky

Published 5th August 2020

As darkness falls on these balmy August evenings the famous "Summer Triangle" is high in the southeastern sky. This seasonal triangle is composed of three of the brightest stars in the night sky, each of which is the brightest star in its own constellation.

Lyra, the Small Harp, lies high in the late evening sky. Its main star is the great Vega, one of the brightest in the sky. Look for Lyra by locating Vega and then the parallelogram of stars nearby.

The great constellation Cygnus, the Swan, flies high through the August night. Using bright Vega as your guide star, look for the cross just to the east. Cygnus is also known as the Northern Cross. Deneb, the Swan's tail, is a supergiant star. If Deneb replaced the Sun in the center of our solar system, it would engulf Mercury and Venus.

Aquila, the Eagle, was known to the ancient Greeks as the great bird of Zeus. Altair, the brightest star in Aquila, is only 16 light-years from Earth.

The bright stars of the summer night, Vega, Altair, and Deneb, make up the Summer Triangle. Seek out the celestial treasures within the "Summer Triangle".

Mars will Appear Super Close To The Moon

Published 6th August 2020

On August 9th, Mars will appear super close to the Moon before dawn. Look toward the south, high in the sky, and you can't miss it – Mars is the bright, reddish point of light just right of the Moon. Weather permitting, this should be a beautiful sky, with the Pleiades, Orion, Aldebaran, Sirius and Venus to the southeast.

Mars is brightening now, day by day. By September 2020, Mars will outshine Sirius, the brightest star in our sky (besides the sun). In October – when Earth will sweep between the sun and Mars, bringing Mars to its every-other-year opposition – Mars will outshine not only all the stars, but also Jupiter, the second-brightest planet.

Mars Nightglow Animation from MAVEN Observations

Published 6th August 2020

Mars’ nightside atmosphere glows and pulsates in this data animation from MAVEN spacecraft observations. Green-to-white false color shows the enhanced brightenings on Mars’ ultraviolet “nightglow" measured by MAVEN’s Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph at about 70 kilometers (approximately 40 miles) altitude. A simulated view of the Mars globe is added digitally for context, with ice caps visible at the poles. Three nightglow brightenings occur over one Mars rotation, the first much brighter than the other two. All three brightenings occur shortly after sunset, appearing on the left of this view of the night side of the planet. The pulsations are caused by downwards winds which enhance the chemical reaction creating nitric oxide which causes the glow. Months of data were averaged to identify these patterns, indicating they repeat nightly.

Is Light A Wave Or A Particle

Published 5th August 2020

One of the most famous debates in all of Physics is one that spanned over four centuries and eventually led to Einstein and Bohr debating for most of the 20th century. It was all about the very nature of light - is light a particle (as Newton had insisted) or is light a wave (as people like Young and Maxwell insisted)? Space Roar: NASA Detected The Loudest Sound In The Universe, But What Is It?

Published 5th August 2020

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ujeYMxRmkTYPsa7mhYN2K-650-80.jpg

In space, nobody can hear you scream, but with the right equipment, it is possible to detect a roar. That's what scientists discovered back in 2006 (https://www.space.com/6293-mystery-roar-faraway-space-detected.html) when they began to look for distant signals in the universe using a complex instrument fixed to a huge balloon that was sent to space. The instrument was able to pick up radio waves from the heat of distant stars, but what came through that year was nothing short of astounding.

As the instrument listened from a height of about 23 miles (37 kilometers), it picked up a signal that was six-times louder than expected by cosmologists. Because it was too loud to be early stars and far greater than the predicted combined radio emission from distant galaxies, the powerful signal caused great puzzlement. And scientists still don't know what is causing it, even today. What's more, it could hamper efforts to search for signals from the first stars that formed after the Big Bang.

Space News | Donald Scott: Campfires On The Sun?

Published 8th August 2020

It’s one of the great enduring mysteries of solar physics — why is the sun’s lower corona hundreds of times hotter than the Sun’s photosphere? For many decades, scientists on Earth have sought an answer to the puzzle, though only doing so within the confines of the standard, thermonuclear model of the Sun.

Recently, the ESA and NASA Solar Orbiter spacecraft returned to scientists on Earth the closest images of the Sun taken to date. Some missions scientists are speculating that features they're calling "campfires" may reveal clues to the problem of coronal heating.

In this episode, Professor Donald E. Scott explains why the Sun’s super-hot corona has always been a predictable feature of the Electric Sun model.

What Is The Perseid Meteor Shower?

Published 8th August 2020

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best meteor showers of the year. It peaks on the night of August 11 and the wee hours of August 12, 2020. Meteors are often called “shooting stars,” but they’re not really stars at all. The Perseid meteoroid stream comes from the debris of Comet Swift-Tuttle (109P), which last passed the Earth’s orbit at the end of 1992.

Perseids are very fast, but these meteors are a bit faint, with few fireballs, so the best time to view them this year is in the evening before midnight, as the light of a Last Quarter Moon this year will obscure all but the brightest meteors when the Moon rises around midnight local time.

CfA Scientists Discover Mysterious Spiral Structures Around A "Planet Factory"

https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/sites/www.cfa.harvard.edu/files/styles/width720/public/images/pr//2020-16.jpg

Published 3rd August 2020

Scientists at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) announced today the discovery of a complex set of spiral arms extending to 1000 astronomical units from the young variable star, RU Lup. The discovery, published in The Astrophysical Journal, reveals new details concerning the size and structure of "planet factories," the protoplanetary disks of gas and dust surrounding stars where planets are born.

Observations at the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile previously produced high-resolution images of dusty disks with multiple rings and gaps hinting to the emergence of new planets, including in the dust disk surrounding RU Lup. But the new study, which focuses on gas in the disk rather than dust, revealed a more complex, less neatly-arranged structure, with an appearance similar to a "mini galaxy."

Mysterious 'Fast Radio Burst' Detected Closer To Earth Than Ever Before

Published 7th August 2020

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/hPzQLgQyYNcPVJ5r2TLfQf-650-80.jpg

Thirty thousand years ago, a dead star on the other side of the Milky Way belched out a powerful mixture of radio and X-ray energy. On April 28, 2020, that belch swept over Earth, triggering alarms at observatories around the world.

The signal was there and gone in half a second, but that's all scientists needed to confirm they had detected something remarkable: the first ever "fast radio burst" (FRB) to emanate from a known star within the Milky Way, according to a study published July 27 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Since their discovery in 2007, FRBs have puzzled scientists. The bursts of powerful radio waves last only a few milliseconds at most, but generate more energy in that time than Earth's sun does in a century. Scientists have yet to pin down what causes these blasts, but they've proposed everything from colliding black holes to the pulse of alien starships as possible explanations. So far, every known FRB has originated from another galaxy, hundreds of millions of light-years away.

The Most Unsettling U.F.O. Theory?

Published 8th August 2020

In June, investigative reporter Tim McMillan told The Basement Office host Steven Greenstreet a source inside the intel/aerospace world claimed UFOs "weren’t flying saucers, they weren’t tic tacs...they were something that possessed the ability to make your mind see what makes sense to you."

Two years earlier, a leaked slide from the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, suggested the phenomenon can "manipulate both physical and cognitive environments in order to penetrate U.S. facilities, influence decision makers, and compromise national security."

Tom DeLonge, whose To The Stars Academy is working with AATIP veterans, recently suggested they may represent a disturbing and ancient “control mechanism." Something Jacques Vallée has hypothesized in the past.

Could all of this be related? Might UFOs — the flaming castles of the 1700s, 1897 phantom airships, and more modern saucers and tic tacs — present themselves differently depending on the time period? And do the goals of the phenomenon change over time?

Or... might humankind unknowingly be driving these changes in UFO appearances?

Thank you Star Tsar

I really enjoyed that. Gives me hope that one day when we get past this
present day manipulation by the controllers of humanity for all this time,
thousands of years, by some estimates, we can begin to make this place a
paradise, as it could have been all along.

ETs could have been the angels of yore mentioned in the Bible.
In the OLD Testament I was always intrigued be Ezekiel and the entities
that spoke to him.

Their vehicle had whirring wheels and fire as Ezekiel saw it in his understanding
of chariots of fire.

Those creatures with "wings" cloaks, arms and legs had to be a type of ET.

Also Moses had an encounter on the mountain with a strange "god".

And maybe Jesus was an ET. He certainly did have powers and everything
he did may have been a show to make the people understand that there
is a different realm in existence that they may reach.

Jesus as an ET.

It would follow that the Holy Ghost was also an ET.
This Holy Ghost descended onto Mary (the Virgin) and impregnated her.
She was given in marriage to Joseph (the carpenter). He had been told
to not worry as this was to be.

Jesus was born. (We know the story)

Later Mary had sons and a daughter who were the the half brothers
and half sister of Jesus (this may not be spelled out clearly in the Bible
but in other places.

James was known as the brother of Jesus and maybe other brothers also.

July 2020 : Earth Changes Summary

Published 9th August 2020

As the solar minimum deepens, all the electrical phenomena are increasing in amount and intensity, and we had another month of record amounts of water pouring down affecting millions and destroying crops around the world.

East Asia got the worst in July, extreme monsoon rain, and the consequential floods and landslides affected tens of millions, displaced thousands, and killed hundreds of people in China, Nepal, Bangladesh, and India.

China continues to battle the worst floods in decades as the water level of 433 rivers is above the flood control line, with 33 of them reaching record highs. Heavy rains have lashed 27 of the country's 31 provinces, affecting more than 37 million people and leaving 141 dead or missing so far.

South Korea continues to suffer its wettest monsoon in recent history, at least 15 people died and more than 1,500 have been evacuated. About 1,300 houses are reported to have been submerged or buried in landslides across the country, and 1,000 roads and bridges have been destroyed or damaged.

Heavy rain and floods continue to ravage Assam, India since May, affecting 2 to 3 million in 27 districts, claiming the lives of more than 100 people, and destroying crops. Over 2,400 villages submerged.

After two weeks of heavy rains, flash floods washed away houses, farms, roads, and electricity and water lines in Yemen. Thousands have been left homeless, and at least 14 have died.

Heavy rains and floods also affected parts of the US Midwest and Southeast, meanwhile, the tornado season has been prolonged another month, with cases of multiple tornadoes at the same time. Ontario, Alberta and Saskatoon, Canada, also experienced multiple tornadoes, something that is becoming more common, even in places where they are supposedly rare.

Snow continues with its off-season displays, 1 foot of snow and -7C degrees temperatures chilled Noway, and China got a fair share despite it being summer.

In the Southern hemisphere, the Andes recorded a historic record of 17 feet of snow; The Snowy Mountains in Australia reported 40 inches, and South Africa experienced a rare snowfall, something new to many locals.

Meteor fireballs gave us a very bright display this month, reminding us that we need to pay attention to the skies and "cosmic intentions".

At the same time, noctilucent clouds are becoming a common sight, perhaps indicating a more significant accumulation of charged particles in the upper atmosphere. As a reminder:

"The unbelievable amount of precipitation during the past months can be explained with the increasing amount of charged particles in the upper layers of the atmosphere.

Charged particles influence weather much more than has been appreciated. "

Extreme weather continues to impact food production all over the world, and we can expect an increase in food prices sooner than later.

Solar Storm Forecast | Three Bright Regions & A Storm Generator

Published 10th August 2020

This week our Sun brings on the brightness with three bright regions in Earth view. One of these, region 2770 is the largest new cycle sunspot we have seen in the northern hemisphere yet! It has also fired a C-class flare, along with a bunch f mini-flares. All of this activity is boosting the solar flux up into the mid-70s. With the additional regions on the Sun's farside rotating into view soon, we might see the solar flux move higher than its been in several years! On top of that, one of the farside regions is also a solar storm generator so we might get a chance for another solar storm as well over the next few weeks. Learn the details of these new regions, catch up on the remaining aurora photos I promised to show with Comet Neowise shooting through aurora-filled skies during our last solar storm, and see what else our Sun has in store!

Main Belt Asteroid Psyche Might Be The Remnant Of A Planet That Never Fully Formed

Published 11th August 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/mainbeltaste.jpg

New 2-D and 3-D computer modeling of impacts on the asteroid Psyche, the largest Main Belt asteroid, indicate it is probably metallic and porous in composition, something like a flying cosmic rubble pile. Knowing this will be critical to NASA's forthcoming asteroid mission, Psyche: Journey to a Metal World, that launches in 2022.

"This mission will be the first to visit a metallic asteroid, and the more we, the scientific community, know about Psyche prior to launch, the more likely the mission will have the most appropriate tools for examining Psyche and collecting data," said Wendy K. Caldwell, Los Alamos National Laboratory Chick Keller Postdoctoral Fellow and lead author on a paper published recently in the journal Icarus. "Psyche is an interesting body to study because it is likely the remnant of a planetary core that was disrupted during the accretion stage, and we can learn a lot about planetary formation from Psyche if it is indeed primarily metallic."

The Perseid Meteor Shower Is Now Underway

Published 10th August 2020

According to meteor experts, the Perseids are the best meteor shower of the year. This year during peak people should see about 60-80 meteors per hour but in outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour.

The meteor shower's peak will be visible both the nights of Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 12-13. On the night of Aug. 12-13 you may see the highest rate of meteors or shooting stars. Both, however, should be spectacular.

Unlike most meteor showers, which have a short peak of high meteor rates, the Perseids have a very broad peak as Earth takes more than three weeks to plow through the wide trail of cometary dust from comet Swift-Tuttle.

Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest object known to repeatedly pass by Earth; its nucleus is about 16 miles (26 kilometers) wide. It last passed nearby Earth during its orbit around the sun in 1992, and the next time will be in 2126.

The Perseids appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, visible in the northeastern sky soon after sunset this time of year. Keep in mind, the Perseids are rich in fireballs, so the show should be spectacular.

TESS Completes Its Primary Mission

Published 11th August 2020

On July 4, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) completed its primary mission, a two-year-long survey that imaged about 75% of the starry sky. In capturing this giant mosaic, TESS has found 66 new exoplanets, or worlds beyond our solar system, as well as nearly 2,100 candidates astronomers are working to confirm.

TESS monitors 24-by-96-degree strips of the sky, called sectors, for about a month using its four cameras. The mission spent its first year observing 13 sectors comprising the southern sky and then spent another year imaging the northern sky.

Now in its extended mission, TESS has turned around to resume surveying the south. In addition, the TESS team has introduced improvements to the way the satellite collects and processes data. Its cameras now capture a full image every 10 minutes, or three times faster than during the primary mission. The faster measurements will allow TESS to better resolve brightness changes caused by stellar oscillations and to capture explosive flares from active stars in greater detail.

These changes will remain in place for the duration of the extended mission, which will be completed in September 2022. After spending a year imaging the southern sky, TESS will take another 15 months to collect additional observations in the north and to survey areas along the ecliptic – the plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun – that have not yet been imaged by TESS.

TESS looks for transits, the telltale dimming of a star caused when an orbiting planet passes in front of it from our point of view. During its primary mission, TESS also observed the outburst of a comet in our solar system, as well as numerous exploding stars, and even watched as a black hole in a distant galaxy shredded a Sun-like star.

Beyond the Fermi Paradox: What is the Aestivation Hypothesis?

Published 7th August 2020

https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/darkenergy-2000x1200.jpg

In 1950, Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi sat down to lunch with some of his colleagues at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he had worked five years prior as part of the Manhattan Project. According to various accounts, the conversation turned to aliens and the recent spate of UFOs. Into this, Fermi issued a statement that would go down in the annals of history: “Where is everybody?“

This became the basis of the Fermi Paradox, which refers to the high probability estimates for the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) and the apparent lack of evidence. But despite seventy years of looking, we still haven’t been able to answer Fermi’s question, leading to multiple proposals as to why this is. Today, we look at the “Aestivation Hypothesis,” which argues that aliens are not dead (or non-existent), they’re just resting!

This theory takes its cue from nature, where certain organisms enter a state of prolonged torpor during particularly hot or dry periods. Similar to hibernation in the winter, these organisms will remain in this state until conditions become cooler and wetter. Applied to the Fermi Paradox, the Aestivation Hypothesis asserts that alien civilizations are largely dormant because they are awaiting better conditions.

This effect has allowed astronomers to see the distant galaxy SPT0418-47 (which appears as a golden ring in the ALMA images) in finer detail than would have been possible otherwise.

The foreground galaxy is not visible in the ALMA images of SPT0418-47 because it is too faint at the wavelengths used. The blue colour used in this schematic to represent this foreground galaxy is artificial.

RLiMyLT7fmA

This animation gives the viewer an idea of how astronomers reconstructed the true shape of the SPT0418-47 galaxy, from ALMA observations of the gravitationally lensed view of the galaxy.

SPT0418-47 is gravitationally lensed by a nearby galaxy, appearing in the sky as a near-perfect ring of light, shown at the start of the video. At the end, we see the image of SPT0418-47 that astronomers obtained when they used a new computer modelling technique to reconstruct its real shape and motion of gas.

Forget GPS, Future Missions May Use Neutron Stars To Navigate Deep Space

Published 12th August 2020

Lighthouses have helped safely guide mariners for centuries. As space explorers consider traveling to far-flung destinations, could pulsars provide them with similar guidance?

As NASA sets its sights on distant planets, astronauts will need a way of orienting themselves in space. Here on Earth, we use the satellite-based GPS that carry atomic clocks that provide extremely accurate time, which gets used by your phone or car to help calculate your position.

And while GPS works just fine if you’re on Earth or close to it, the signal weakens once you go beyond its range.

Historically, NASA has primarily used the Deep Space Network to track missions beyond Earth’s orbit. The three ground stations are approximately 120 degrees apart, and they beam up radio waves to a spacecraft and log details as the signals return. Navigation data is calculated on Earth and sent back, helping ground control keep missions on the right path.

But if that radio link with Earth is lost, a spacecraft can find itself adrift.

And so we need a better solution, like if a spacecraft could navigate independently, without ground control.

Enter: Pulsars.

Find out how neutron stars, pulsars, and a piece of equipment called the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer, or NICER, can help spacefaring explorers navigate space more effectively in this Elements.

As well as the fact that the solar system may be full of life as much of the moon's and Kuiper belt objects have large amounts of water on them. Does Europa have complex life? It has an ocean of water underneath it's surface more than the combined amount of water on Earth. The Europa Clipper mission will do its best to answer that. Also, how is NASA now searching for potential technosignatures?

NASA Spacecraft Uncover Mystery Behind Auroral Beads

Published 14th August 2020

A special type of aurora, draped east-west across the night sky like a glowing pearl necklace, is helping scientists better understand the science of auroras and their powerful drivers out in space. Known as auroral beads, these lights often show up just before large auroral displays, which are caused by electrical storms in space called substorms. Until now, scientists weren’t sure if auroral beads are somehow connected to other auroral displays as a phenomenon in space that precedes substorms, or if they are caused by disturbances closer to Earth’s atmosphere.

But powerful new computer models, combined with observations from NASA’s Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms – THEMIS – mission, have provided the first direct evidence of the events in space that lead to the appearance of these beads and demonstrated the important role they play in our local space environment.

Space News | No Magnetic Universe Without Electric Currents

Published 14th August 2020

It may be the greatest surprise for mainstream cosmologists since the dawn of the Space Age: the detection of powerful magnetic fields at all scales throughout the Universe. In recent years, with the ever finer detection of cosmic magnetism, astrophysicists have increasingly sought an answer to the problem — an answer which might somehow be compatible with acceptable, Big Bang cosmology.

It’s important to note, as we’ve done in numerous past episodes, that mainstream cosmologists did not predict the so-called magnetic universe. In fact, a telling glimpse into the prevailing thoughts on cosmic magnetism can be found in the 1999 NASA web item entitled, 'Do magnetic fields exist throughout space?' It states, “On the cosmological scale, there is no data to suggest that magnetic fields are present. They certainly are not important in the dynamics of the universe for any reasonable range of field strengths consistent with present observational constraints.”

However, today, not only do mainstream cosmologists view cosmic magnetism as important, some astrophysicists are counting on mysterious magnetism to resolve ad hoc some of the biggest evidentiary problems for the Big Bang hypothesis. In this episode, we’ve asked retired professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Donald E. Scott to offer his thoughts on the real source of cosmic magnetism in our Electric Universe.

Space Bricks For Lunar Habitation

Published 14th August 2020

https://scx1.b-cdn.net/csz/news/800/2020/spacebricksf.jpg

In what could be a significant step forward in space exploration, a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has developed a sustainable process for making brick-like structures on the moon. It exploits lunar soil, and uses bacteria and guar beans to consolidate the soil into possible load-bearing structures. These 'space bricks' could eventually be used to assemble structures for habitation on the moon's surface, the researchers suggest.

"It is really exciting because it brings two different fields—biology and mechanical engineering—together," says Aloke Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IISc, one of the authors of two studies recently published in Ceramics International and PLOS One

Rare "Black Moon" Rising

Published 13th August 2020

There are many intriguing Moons, the Full Moon, the Supermoon, the Blue Moon, the Blood Moon and so many more. None however, are as intriguing, or mysterious, as the Black Moon. This rare Moon occurs just once every 33 months, and is set to rise this month.

On August 19, 2020, at 02:41 UTC (10:41 PM EDT - Aug. 18) will be the New Moon, when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and will not be visible from the Earth.

What Is A Black Moon?
There are several definitions of a Black Moon. It can be the third New Moon in an astronomical season with four New Moons, or the second New Moon in the same calendar month.

Second New Moon in the same month: These Black Moons are the most common ones, and they occur about once every 29 months.

Third New Moon in a season of four New Moons: These Black Moons are a little rarer, and occur about once every 33 months.

On August 19th will be the third New Moon in a season with four New Moons, so we call this a "Black Moon." And while the Moon itself will be pretty much invisible, it will, nonetheless, provide an incredible opportunity for stargazing since there will be a whole lot of darkness in the night sky.

An Unusual Meteorite, More Valuable Than Gold, May Hold The Building Blocks Of Life

As the fiery emissary streaked across the skies of Costa Rica, an unearthly mix of orange and green, Marcia Campos Muñoz was in her pajamas, watching TV on the couch. It was 23 April 2019, a bit past 9 p.m., when she heard a foreboding rumble. Heart racing, she tiptoed outside to calm her barking dog, Perry, and to check on the cow pastures ringing her small house in Aguas Zarcas, a village carved out of Costa Rica’s tropical rainforest. Nothing. She ducked back inside, just before a blast on the back terrace rattled the house to its bones.

Campos Muñoz phoned her father, brother, and oldest son, who rushed to the house. On the terrace, they found a grapefruit-size hole in the corrugated zinc roof and a smashed-up plastic table, last used for the quinceañera of Campos Muñoz’s daughter. The culprit was scattered on the floor, in pieces as black as coal.

She picked up the biggest fragment, still warm to the touch. Already, her phone was chiming with WhatsApp messages from friends telling of blazing fireballs and rocks raining down on farms and fields. The family added its own viral messages to the mix: photos of Campos Muñoz and her son holding the big stone that crashed through her roof. Within hours, a local journalist visited the house and streamed videos of the damage on Facebook Live.

The Milkomeda Collision

Published 13th August 2019

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/Andromeda_Collides_Milky_Way.jpg

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, and its nearest large neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), are on a collision course. Billions of years from now, the merger will transform the structure of both galaxies and create a new arrangement of stars we have dubbed Milkomeda (“milk-AHM-mee-da”). The merger will radically transform the night sky. But into what?

Currently, the Milky Way’s thin disk of stars and gas appears as a nebulous strip arching across the summer sky. As Andromeda grazes the Milky Way, a second lane of stars will join the one that presently graces the night sky. After the final merger, the stars will no longer be confined to two narrow lanes, but instead scatter across the entire sky.
