Aliens could be detected by measuring atmospheric pollution on other planets, according to new research. A study by NASA examined the presence of nitrogen dioxide gas, which is produced on Earth by burning fossil fuels. While the evolution of a civilization that has developed to oil- or coal-based industries seems slim, the gas is also sourced from other materials including lightning and biological processes.

“On Earth, most of the nitrogen dioxide is emitted from human activity - combustion processes such as vehicle emissions and fossil-fueled power plants,” said Ravi Kopparapu of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

There is perhaps no other musician as universally regarded as Jimi Hendrix. To this day, his appeal extends across musical genres, nationalities, and nations. He has sold more than 80 million records worldwide and counting.

As a boy, Hendrix insisted on being called 'Buster' due to his fascination with Flash Gordon, played on the big screen by Buster Crabbe. His brother Leon tells the story of seeing a flying saucer in their backyard as grade-schoolers. Numerous witnesses have testified to seeing UFOs in the sky during Hendrix's last concert on the edge of a volcano in Maui, Hawaii.

Hendrix paid his dues playing guitar for a number of other artists before striking off on his own, including the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, and Curtis Knight & the Squires from New York City. At that time we were over the area of South Africa, moving towards the area of the Indian ocean. I just made some gymnastic exercises, when I saw in front of me, through a porthole, an object which I could not explain. It is impossible to determine distances in Space. A small object can appear large and far away and the other way around. Sometimes a cloud of dust appears like a large object.

Anyway, I saw this object and then something happened I could not explain, something impossible according to the laws of Physics. The object had this shape, elliptical, and flew with us. From a frontal view it looked like it would rotate in flight direction.

It only flew straight, but then a kind of explosion happened, very beautiful to watch, of golden light. This was the first part. Then, one or two seconds later, a second explosion followed somewhere else and two spheres appeared, golden and very beautiful.

After this explosion I just saw white smoke, then a cloud-like sphere. Before we entered the darkness, we flew through the terminator, the twilight-zone between day and night. We flew eastwards, and when we entered the darkness of the Earth shadow, I could not see them any longer. The two spheres never returned."

In 1989, at a military base near the nuclear test site of Kapustin Yar, members of two army units noticed a UFO which hovered for hours over the arsenal of the base. The KGB files contained the handwritten reports of the sighting. It flew over the stores of the unit and moved in the direction of the missile arsenal. When it hovered over the arsenal, a bright ray appeared on its underside.

This case occurred on July 28, 1989, at a military base near the nuclear test site of Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan region (Caspian lowlands).

It was about midnight when members of two army units noticed a UFO which hovered for hours over the arsenal of the base. The KGB files contained the handwritten reports of the sighting, which 4 of the witnesses wrote after being interrogated by agents of the KGB. The report does not say what kind of missiles were in the arsenal, nor whether there had been any nuclear warheads.

"I climbed up to the watchtower and watched the object at a height of 18 feet. I could clearly make out a glaring blinking signal, bright as a camera flash. The object flew over the stores of the unit and moved in the direction of the missile arsenal, about 1,000 feet away. It floated at a height of only 60 feet above the depot. The UFO glowed in a kind of phosphorescent green. It was a disc 12 to 15 feet in diameter with a semi-spherical dome on it.

While the object was hovering above the arsenal, a bright ray appeared on its underside where the light had been flashing before, and drew 2 or 3 circles. Then the object moved towards the railway station, still flashing. Soon, however, it came back to the missile depot and hovered at a height of 180-200 feet above it. Two hours after the start of the sighting, the object flew in the direction of the town Akhtubinsk and disappeared out of our sight"

I had to track it down and it is by Bernard Picart (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Picart) (1673 – 1733), an engraver working in Paris and Amsterdam. Picart produced numerous engraved images with religious scenes, and not just from Christianity, but from many other world religions, which are compiled in his book Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde and may have been one of the first Europeans to have demonstrated a respect for the other religions of the world on a level with Christianity.

Less than 48 hours after our initial reporting on an outright strange incident involving American Airlines Flight 2292 as it flew at 36,000 feet over the northeastern corner of New Mexico on February 21st, 2021, we have confirmation that the event in question did indeed occur and that it is being investigated by the FBI. The incident involved pilots of the Airbus A320 being buzzed by an unidentified cylindrical-shaped object moving at high-speed, which resulted in them querying the FAA's Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center.

The original recording of the incident went like this:

Sometimes long kept secrets are exposed of their own accord because of other things that happen. These secondary events shine light where none was originally anticipated. Something formerly in the shadows is accidentally or inadvertently revealed. This result is currently in progress with the American secrecy about UFOs, now recoined as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs). Cages are ready to be rattled.

What’s the Big Secret?
Even the term UAP is a form of secrecy by sleight of hand.

These phenomena have been discovered in the oceans, traveling in water with the same rapid ease as they do in the air. There are reports of them coming out of the Earth, as well, or vanishing into mountain sides and beneath the seabed. They seem be able to go everywhere and anywhere they want as they wish. These weird and inexplicable objects appear to humans all the time. We can usually only watch as our own understanding of what is possible gets left behind.


Acknowledging that we know something is there but not what it is, we can more
inclusively refer to these phenomena as the Presence.

The Presence is worldwide. For many years, reports were gathered for further investigation by governments across the globe that could afford the luxury. Some, like Britain and France, have made (allegedly all) their files accessible at national archives or posted the data on the Internet for everyone to see. After the fall of the Soviet Union, ufology received a cornucopia of formerly secret documents as well as military officer testimonies concerning Russian efforts to track, examine, and understand the Presence. Having gone the route of complete denial, the refusal by the United States to admit the existence of the Presence is more than a bit shown up by this backscatter of illumination.

Inquiring Spies Want to Know

No doubt throughout the unfolding modern history of the Presence, intelligence agents have been delving into what might be known by the adversaries of their countries.

There is no information any other nation possesses that the U.S. intelligence agencies don’t deem their responsibility to find out. Others take a similar view about us. Are the Americans keeping secrets about UAPs? Canadian diplomats came to that conclusion as early as the 1950s. The Russians were such capable boogeymen to the United States that psychic spying, aka remote viewing, was made into a well-funded CIA research program called the Stargate Project that lasted for 25 years. Very likely the psychonauts had their inner eyes looking out for something other than one another, too. Everyone seeks an edge every way they can. Deception and misdirection are key tools.

Deceptive practices by the U.S. government concerning the Presence have been revealed again and again, with a new non-explanatory “explanation” delivered every time the last one is caught out. These counter intelligence exercises are very inventive and presume the gullibility of their audience. Debunkers chip in, too, whether for free or on government retainer. Case closed, until the next time someone pops their balloon (dummy). U.S. authorities are very intent on hiding something that is of paramount importance to them. They grasp tightly at some secret worth lying about to everybody. And they have done for a human lifetime.

For the past eight decades, the Presence has been kept as one of the most secret of secrets by American authorities. Robert I. Sarbacher, a physicist who consulted with the U.S. Department of Defense, confirmed before his death in 1986 the accuracy of a Canadian governmental project memorandum stating that the American classification for UFOs was “two points higher than the H-bomb.” This above top-secret rating is for something that doesn’t exist according to the Pentagon. Paul Hellyer, a former Minister of Defense in Canada prominent now for his open discussion of alien visitors to Earth, also notes the dominating control of the United States worldwide over information about the Presence. The honey trap of foreign aid can come with hidden conditions, like silent cooperation on matters that are not to be discussed at all with anyone.

While there exist innumerable publicly available accounts of unknown craft showing up, interacting with humans, and departing, the recovery of reportedly downed UAPs is shielded behind a pitch-black veil of solid denial. The most obvious reason to say nothing is the potential advantage to be gained over other nations from studying technologically advanced materials and functional parts of objects that move at incredible speeds. What is the energy source, how does the propulsion work, how is it controlled? Then that knowledge can be weaponized. Secrecy is national defense, with silence about both what you do and do not know. Spies understand clever ways to work that.

None of this official quietus has stopped the Presence from continuing to appear. Sometimes the number of anomalous objects visible in video from NASA shuttle flights or the International Space Station makes laughable the attendant commentary from Mission Control. A UAP hovering in midday over Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, the third busiest air hub in the U.S., made a large round hole in the cloud cover upon sudden vertical departure in 2006. Examples with reliable eyewitness reports and good technical documentation accumulate regularly. The Presence has the status of open secret in more than a few people’s minds.

Disavowal seems to have worn out its credibility. We are due by law a Congressional report in the early summer of 2021 on what the Pentagon and the spy community knows about the Presence. In the past, we might have expected another rubber stamp refusal to reveal anything true. Circumstances have changed.

But Wait, There’s More

Denial works for those who can afford to maintain the lie.

Aside from high-ranking members of the U.S. government feeling left out in the cold about something that affects their ability to uphold their oath of office (at least those that still care about that sort of thing), the necessity for disclosure has become overt because of unprecedented and interrelated changes in the world. Ironically, the American government has been a prominent booster of the industrial expansion policy called globalization. This transformation of research and manufacturing capability across the planet has altered the balance of power between nations. At the same time, the inequities of the capitalist economic system driving this change have produced a fairly large number of incredibly wealthy individuals and corporations.

Think of this situation like using a pair of chopsticks, with one being the modern technological and scientific advancement of developing nations and the other being the rise of vast privately controlled resources previously available only to governments. The viability of continued American denial about the Presence is caught in the middle of this pincer movement.

Most countries were at a massive technological and economic disadvantage to the United States in the 1950s through the 1980s, but that is no longer the case. Deference that once existed to American interests is much diminished generally throughout the world. The influence of the U.S. government has waned as that of other powers, particularly the Chinese, has waxed. India, a nuclear power, is now developing hypersonic missiles along with Russia and China doing the same. The technical capacity of some nations has leapfrogged to near parity with the United States and in some instances appears to exceed it. What if they have their own confidences about the Presence?

For all that people may first think of a flying saucer crash reported near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, there are others said to have occurred over the decades since. Apparently not all were in the United States and some happened in places like Russia, South America and maybe even Africa. Of course, the Russians were likely to keep anything like that to themselves. Before globalization, though, the bottomless American checkbook spoke loudest to small and impoverished countries (or at least their tinpot dictators) about anything unknown that might have fallen to earth in their territory.

With no scientific faculty to inquire on their own, what was Venezuela or Nigeria, say, going to do going to do with something the Americans said was debris from one of their classified space programs? Best to open that Swiss bank account and not ask any questions as the C130 hauled everything away. Now things are very different. Research tools and analysis equipment of a precision unthinkable only twenty years ago are available in many more countries than just America and Europe. Further, the persuasive effect of American pocket money diminishes when others can promise more lasting benefits. The Chinese are especially good at this kind of negotiation (caveat emptor). America has lost the monopoly of scientific capacity that made disavowal workable. Other countries are busy with their new options, such as exploring the Moon and Mars.

If You Won’t, I Can

Just as importantly, space exploration and undersea development are being privatized.

There now exist immensely rich individuals who have the means to send into orbit privately crewed spacecraft. For example, Elon Musk is pushing ahead with SpaceX and Jeff Bezos is coming along with Blue Origin. Movie director James Cameron (Avatar, Alien, The Abyss, The Titanic) took his custom-built one-man submarine down 6.8 miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the oceans. These enterprises involve many hands. As this technology market matures, ever more people will be able to go directly to places where the Presence may be encountered or see high quality records made of such events. Some of these very motivated, independently minded human beings are likely not willing to keep their mouths shut about what they may learn.

Suppose a rich and powerful person not under a governmental non-disclosure agreement makes an up close and personal high-resolution video of the Presence with their cell phone while on a recreational suborbital jaunt with Virgin Galactic. How long before a billionaire on a super yacht takes a Triton Submarines six-person acrylic-hulled seacraft out for a spin at 1,000 meters depth and encounters the passing Presence? The possibilities are growing everyday.

The house of cards that is denial about the Presence is poised to fall down.

The Exit Sign

The secret just isn’t secret enough anymore.

Twin threats are closing in. Another nation might recover, exploit, and deploy Presence technology first (hypersonic missles, really? India?). That was probably always considered a danger, but much less likely before with the former American scientific advantage. Sure, we can always hope that there is a hidden U.S. space fleet crewed by the non-terrestrial officers seen listed in a Pentagon spreadsheet by Gary McKinnon. That’ll show these upstart nations who are late to the party. Back off, the United States is still in charge. Or maybe a couple of the Invisible College fellows (male or female) will spend some of their millions in an especially productive way that conclusively outs the Presence. But then, they would have to tell us who they are, which is a secret except amongst themselves.

Any of these outcomes poses a challenge to the control sought by American disavowal. The only remaining option for a leadership position in the growing awareness of the Presence is to get out in front and dominate the disclosure conversation. To do that, they will have to shed some secrecy. Perhaps this was the plan all along. Very smart people who have spent decades denying the existence of the Presence likely gamed out many scenarios that would require public acknowledgement on at least some level, or probably several levels depending on who is asking.

The disclosure clock has been ticking for a long while. Time for the first chime.

Humanity has some unfinished business with the Moon.

The lunar surface has fallen back into the realm of the remote and unfamiliar for too long. The Apollo landings kindled a dream of an expansive, space-faring future for our species, and that vision continues to inspire us nearly a half century later. NASA’s upcoming plan to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon via the Artemis Program, therefore, constitutes a long-overdue reunion.

Life on the Moon

The Moon has no appreciable atmosphere. Besides a thin layer of rarefied gas, it is engulfed by the vacuum of space. This means that the lunar surface has no protection whatsoever from radiation or meteoroid bombardment.

In sunlight, temperatures reach 260 degrees Fahrenheit (127 degrees Celsius) and, in the shade, they drop to -280 degrees F (-173 C). These temperature extremes are highly localized since there is no atmosphere to equalize the difference. Lunar equipment and infrastructure will therefore have to resist both freezing and overheating depending on whether they are in sunlight or shadow.

Artemis astronauts will experience 17% of Earth’s gravity on the Moon. The long-term effect of partial gravity on the human body is unclear, but we do know that the weightlessness felt by humans on the International Space Station results in tangible changes to their physiology, such as bone loss or muscular degeneration. It’s safe to assume that similar health consequences might result from long-term lunar habitation.

A day on the Moon is 29 times longer than a day on Earth. This drastic departure from our natural day-night cycle will introduce an additional challenge for our biological systems which are finely tuned to the daylight hours of our home world. The eyewitness was watching a news cast about the first plane to land at the Santa Lucia airport. He was watching because the Mexican Air Force was flying in the President of Mexico, Andres Orbrador. But later in the ceremony a non military plane (white) was seen taking off from the runway.  As this plane rose higher and higher upon takeoff, a black disk could be seen hovering in place in the background beyond the unfinished control tower. The eyewitness took out his camera and recorded directly off the TV screen. Its a well known fact that UFOs are frequently seen around presidents doing outdoor events. So this video means a lot. 

Now I searched the videos for this particular aircraft and I could only find the craft landing. I could not find it taking off. So...the original news video...eludes me...or was it deleted by the government before the public noticed?

Please keep an open mind, these lights were recorded over Tokyo this week and they took the residence there by surprise. There was no visible beam, as would be the case if it were spot lights. There was also no perfect synchronization as with spot lights too. So I know this to be something different. Something rare and strange. I believe these are energy entities that came from Mount Fuji. Strange lights and have been seen around that volcano and throughout the forest around it. Because these entities are light, they will be hard to record with any camera. When it is recorded like here, the entities appear lighter, harder to see than with the naked eye. Absolute proof that there is an alien base under Mount Fuji.

But one of its lesser-known superlatives is that Jupiter is the solar system’s strongest particle accelerator, driving charged particles up to nearly the speed of light. And part of what propels them to such speeds, according to three recent studies in Geophysical Research Letters that analyzed data collected by NASA’s Juno spacecraft, is the unique interaction between Jupiter and its moon Io.

Could the Star of Bethlehem have been caused by a "great conjunction" of the bright planets Venus and Jupiter?

For centuries, astronomers have looked to the historical record in search of evidence for what could explain the Star of Bethlehem. Scholars have been discussing potential causes since at least the 13th century. Perhaps it was a supernova, a comet, a solar flare or an alignment of planets. Or, alternatively, maybe it never happened at all.

The story of the Star of Bethlehem appears only in the Book of Matthew. The gospel tells us that a bright star appeared in the eastern sky when Jesus was born, famously seen by a group of wise men. These biblical "Magi," sometimes called kings, now adorn nativity scenes around the world.

HUNDREDS SEE SHINY OBJECT

Flying Saucer Chased 86 Miles

RAVENNA, Ohio - "We were close, closer than I ever want to be again," said a deputy sheriff who chased an unidentified flying object from Ohio into Pennsylvania. Hundreds of persons in both states reported seeing the "brilliant and shiny" object early yesterday morning. Police Chief Gerald Buchert of Mantua, about eight miles north of Ravenna, said be took a picture of the object from his front yard but the Air Force told him not to release it. Buchert said it looked like "two table saucers put together."

Portage County Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur said he and his partner, W.L. "Barney" Neff, "were close" to the object in separate ears and chased it 86 miles (or an hour and a half, from near Ravenna to Conway, PA, near Pittsburgh. Spaur said he clocked it at speeds up to 103 miles per hour. From the ground Spaur said it looked like the head of a flashlight, about 40 feet wide. Spaur said the lines of the object were very distinct. "Somebody had control over it," he said. "It wasn't just floating around. It can maneuver." The deputy said the chase slowed down near Rochester, when the cars "got tangled up in a mess of bridges ... but when I came out from under the bridge it came down and waited for us, just as though it knew these two cars were following it. I know nobody's going to believe it but it's true."

Spaur said the only sound coming from the object waa a steady, faint humming, like an electric transformer. Near Conway, Spaur said the object began hovering and "was going for altitude, straight up." He said the object disappeared after twilight, while others went to a police station to telephone Air Force officials. The Federal Aviation Agency's air traffic control centers at Oberlin and Pittsburgh said they spotted no unknown objects on their radar.

Patrolman Wayne Houston of East Palestine said he spotted and began following the object at approximately 5:35 am. After being alerted a half hour earlier by a police radio broadcast, Houston followed it along Ohio H and Pennsylvania S southeast to Conway and estimated its speed at up to 100 miles an hour. "As near as I can describe it, it looked like a partially melted ice cream cone – a wedge - shaped affair with the pointy part of it being down." Houston said, adding: "It was very bright, very brightly illuminated. One solid light - not individual lights." Houston said that he and other patrolmen with whom he was in radio communication during the pursuit saw "what looked like an antenna sticking out on one aide of it when they got near Rochester."

As it came over the trees, I looked at Barney and he was still watching the car . . and he didn't say nothing and the thing kept getting brighter and the area started to get light. .. . I told him to look over his shoulder, and he did.

He just stood there with his mouth open for a minute, as bright as it was, and he looked down. And I started looking down and I looked at my hands and my clothes weren't burning or anything, when it stopped right over on top of us. The only thing, the only sound in the whole area was a hum . . . like a transformer being loaded or an overloaded transformer when it changes.

I was petrified, and so I moved my right foot, and everything seemed to work all right. And evidently he made the same decision I did, to get something between me and it, or us and it, or whatever you would say. So we both went for the car, we got in the car and we sat there ... It was very bright; it'd make your eyes water.

We could see these planes coming in.... When they started talking about fighter planes, it was just as if that thing heard every word that was said; it went PSSSSSHHEW, straight up; and I mean when it went up, friend, it didn't play no games – it went straight up."

The Virtual Telescope Project, based in Rome, Italy, captured asteroid (99942) Apophis on March 2, 2021. The asteroid shows as a dot – while the stars around it show as streaks – because the telescope was tracking the asteroid’s motion. It is moving through space with respect to Earth at 4.658 km/sec (2.894 miles/sec). This flyby is a precursor to the tantalizingly close sweep Apophis will make in 2029.

No, it won’t strike Earth (when closest, it’ll be about 44 times the moon’s distance), but the asteroid is now within range of earthly telescopes and radar.

New radar observations of asteroid Apophis were made during the first week of March, 2021 from NASA’s Goldstone radar in California. The new observations allowed astronomers to better refine the space rock’s orbit. New data suggests Apophis should pass on Friday The Thirteenth, April 2029 at a nominal distance of 19,662 miles (31,643 km) from Earth’s surface.

The eyewitness often scans the skies in search for UFOs. On March 1st, they got lucky and spotted a unique jellyfish like object floating over head. The object was very shiny and sometimes appeared white, but was not white itself, but instead it was a swirling of colors on a sometimes transparent craft. Jellyfish shaped UFOs with tentacles hanging are not unheard of. They are actually seen several times every year, but most often over land, flying low near the ocean.

… So we go outside. It was a snowy night, it was in February. And we went outside and it was one of those bright nights and it’s overcast but there’s enough light from the moon reflecting off the clouds, I’m guessing, where you can see things.

The next thing you know, we saw something in the sky … The only way to make it so people can get a visual of it, is it looked like is if you see the movie "Independence Day", which is a great movie … I saw a fiery cloud, I guess, coming through the sky. It was like that in the sense that it was a large, orange, left to right moving object. Because of the overcast nature of the night, you couldn’t make it out, but it was definitely large, moving from left to right, at 12:30 at night here. It was me, Steve and his brother who saw it. We look at each other and we go ‘What in the f-ck was that?’ It went out of sight, and you could hear it moving.

When it’d been out of sight for a good thirty seconds, we were kind of in shock, that anybody who’s been to a flyover or an airshow or just seen "Top Gun", you know, the sound that a fighter jet makes as it flies by. And there were about four of those.

Now if you know anything about UFO sightings, you know that a lot of times, two things are connected to UFO sightings. One is the sign of fighter jets, because they’re sent out to look at them or chase them down. Two is the sightings around nuclear power plants. And to tie it all off, the alarm we heard was from about thirty miles out, there was a nuclear power plant that had an alarm that went off. The alarm went off an hour later, and we were still all in shock and we ran downstairs and ran outside saying ‘Is something else coming?’ But in typical fashion, there was no mention of it the next day.”

"I was working in Basingstoke town center. I went outside with my workmate to get some materials out of the van and noticed 1 light slowly move around the back of the building, then another one appeared from behind the building at a certain distance that did not change. Seconds after another 3 appeared as if they were already there but not let up. After a minute or so they began to slowly swing around (as if a crane headlights on it and turned around 220deg). At this point 2 lights were visible, after another minute or two the 2 visible lights go further and further away; one stopped, and the other seemed to carry-on barely being a visible light source. After around five minutes they came back to the second position (all 5).

They then swung around again and just sat still with a very minimal amount of movement. At this point we went back inside the building to try and get a better view from the roof. With the fog we couldn’t see anything so ran back down at which point they were nowhere to be seen.

At first I thought it was a helicopter but they seemed very close I would’ve definitely heard the sound of the rotors. I have ruled out them being any kind of civilian craft as these would’ve had some sort of flashing lights on them and with it being dark and foggy we would’ve seen this. I couldn’t have been search lights shining up from the ground as we can clearly see the light surface area getting wider as it shown down meaning the light sources in the sky. It was a very quiet night with only birds singing being heard and very little to no wind. It was also very foggy with car park spotlights clearly visible and lights on buildings, but those could’ve easily been told apart from those 5 lights. The sighting lasted around 30 minutes."

Why would Aliens make a robot that looks like a human being? Such a waste of resources, to have to implement mechanism to move those knees and arms and all those 'human like' parts. Summers spanning nearly six months may become the new normal by 2100 in the Northern Hemisphere, according to a new study from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The change would likely have far-reaching impacts on agriculture, human health and the environment, according to the study authors.

In the 1950s in the Northern Hemisphere, the four seasons arrived in a predictable and fairly even pattern. But climate change is now driving dramatic and irregular changes to the length and start dates of the seasons, which may become more extreme in the future under a business-as-usual climate scenario.

The researchers used historical daily climate data from 1952 to 2011 to measure changes in the four seasons’ length and onset in the Northern Hemisphere. They defined the start of summer as the onset of temperatures in the hottest 25% during that time period, while winter began with temperatures in the coldest 25%.

Next, the team used established climate change models to predict how seasons will shift in the future. The new study found that, on average, summer grew from 78 to 95 days between 1952 to 2011, while winter shrank from 76 to 73 days. Spring and autumn also contracted from 124 to 115 days, and 87 to 82 days, respectively. Accordingly, spring and summer began earlier, while autumn and winter started later. The Mediterranean region and the Tibetan Plateau experienced the greatest changes to their seasonal cycles.

Scientists Digitally Unfold 300-Year-Old Sealed Letters

Using a highly sensitive X-ray microtomography scanner, a team of researchers from Queen Mary University in London has scanned four unopened letters from the Brienne Collection, a 17th-century postal trunk full of undelivered mail.

Before the proliferation of mass-produced envelopes in the 1830s, most letters were sent via letterlocking, the process of folding and securing writing substrates to become their own envelopes. Letterlocking was an everyday activity for centuries, across cultures, borders, and social classes, and plays an integral role in the history of secrecy systems as the missing link between physical communications security techniques from the ancient world and modern digital cryptography.

The Brienne Collection, a European postmaster’s trunk preserving 300-year-old undelivered post, provides a rare opportunity to study sealed letters. It contains 3,148 cataloged items, including 2,571 opened letters, fragments, and other documents, and 577 letterpackets that have never been opened.

“We’ve been able to use our scanners to X-ray history,” said Dr. David Mills, from Queen Mary University of London. "The scanning technology is similar to medical CT scanners, but using much more intense X-rays which allow us to see the minute traces of metal in the ink used to write these letters.”

The scientists revealed the contents of a letter dated July 31, 1697. It contains a request from Jacques Sennacques to his cousin Pierre Le Pers, a French merchant in The Hague, for a certified copy of a death notice of one Daniel Le Pers.

On the night of December 13, 2020, the Earth passed through the stream of debris left by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. As each rocky fragment entered Earth's atmosphere, it vaporized in a spectacular fiery end as a meteor. This shower delivered beautiful meteors in quick succession for over an hour. This timelapse, set to Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers, shows just how many meteors were visible in a relatively small portion of the sky during this event.

Scientists in the UK announced on March 9, 2021, that they’ve made a rare recovery of a meteorite that fell to Earth just a few days ago. The discovery stemmed from the widespread sighting – on February 28 – of a fireball, a very bright meteor or shooting star, that lit up the sky as seen from across the UK and northern Europe. Now astronomers and meteorite experts have located the space rock that created that display. They found pieces of the rock in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. It’s likely to become known as the Winchcombe meteorite, according to meteorite experts at the University of Manchester Natural History Museum.

The group ultimately recovered about 10.5 ounces (300 grams) of the meteorite. Part of it landed on a driveway in the town of Winchcombe, described as “a small market town of early medieval origin, in the Cotswold hills of Gloucestershire, England.”

An international team of scientists has announced the discovery of an extraordinary fossilized nest in China, preserving at least eight separate dinosaurs from 70 million years ago. 

The clutch of ancient eggs belongs to a medium-sized adult oviraptor, and we know that because the parent is actually part of the fossil. The skeleton of this ostrich-like theropod is positioned in a crouch over two dozen eggs, at least seven of which were on the brink of hatching and still contain embryos inside. 

The ancient scene is unprecedented, and provides the first hard evidence that dinosaurs were brooding parents, laying their eggs and incubating them for quite a long time.

Astronomers may have found an extraordinarily long jet from a supermassive black hole in the early Universe using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. This would be an important discovery if scientists can confirm this result with future observations. This jet is coming from a rapidly growing black hole about 12.7 billion light years from Earth, or, in other words, less than a billion years after the Big Bang. This would make it the most distant black hole with a jet detected in X-rays.

The length of the jet is also an important clue in this study. The Chandra data indicates that the jet extends some 160,000 light years. This gives astronomers a timeline to determine just how long the black hole has been adding bulk during this growth spurt.

Another week, another artificial intelligence going decidedly off-piste. We recently mentioned the autonomous video-interviewing system that appeared to be grading candidates on the strength of the bookcase behind them (27 February). Now a paper published on the website of the company OpenAI reveals how CLIP, a neural network system that learns to recognise visual concepts through being fed verbal descriptions of them, can be spoofed simply by overlaying an image with text declaring it to be something else.

Stick a sticker on an apple declaring it to be a different apple product, an iPod, and the AI says it is an iPod 99.7 per cent of the time. Plaster dollar signs on a picture of anything, from a poodle to a chainsaw to a horse chestnut, and, with a charmingly artless naivety, CLIP mostly returns the answer “piggy bank”.

This suggests an excellent way to defy privacy-violating face-recognition systems when on nefarious business: simply attach a sheet of paper about your person declaring yourself to be your favourite frenemy or privacy violating tech guru ...

A meteor streaked through the night sky over Vermont on Sunday (March 7), creating a spectacular light show and causing Earth-shaking booms as it burned through the atmosphere. Authorities heard from residents all over the state.

The meteor's explosive passage through the atmosphere released the equivalent of 440 pounds (200 kilograms) of TNT, suggesting that the meteor was likely 10 pounds (4.5 kg) and 6 inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, according to NASA Meteor Watch. The space rock smacked into the atmosphere at about 42,000 mph (68,000 kph). It appeared over the northern part of the state as a bright fireball at 5:38 p.m. EST, just before sunset.

The link between mental imagery and emotions may be closer than we thought

People with aphantasia – that is, the inability to visualise mental images – are harder to spook with scary stories, a new study from the University of New South Wales Sydney (UNSW) shows.

The study, published today in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, tested how aphantasic people reacted to reading distressing scenarios, like being chased by a shark, falling off a cliff, or being in a plane that's about to crash.

The researchers were able to physically measure each participant's fear response by monitoring changing skin conductivity levels – in other words, how much the story made a person sweat. This type of test is commonly used in psychology research to measure the body's physical expression of emotion.

According to the findings, scary stories lost their fear factor when the readers couldn't visually imagine the scene – suggesting imagery may have a closer link to emotions than scientists previously thought.

At first, the stories started innocuously, for example, 'You are at the beach, in the water' or 'You're on a plane, by the window'. But as the stories continued, the suspense slowly built, whether it was a dark flash in the distant waves and people on the beach pointing, or the cabin lights dimming as the plane starts to shake.

"We found the strongest evidence yet that mental imagery plays a key role in linking thoughts and emotions," says Professor Joel Pearson, senior author on the paper and Director of UNSW Science's Future Minds Lab.

Today I was in the Wesermarsch near Berne and filmed the rising of the February full moon there. Fortunately, the clouds loosened up in the evening after it had been cloudy for the rest of the day. The full moon rose here shortly after 6 p.m. However, it reached its full 100% around 9:17 a.m. local time, so it was already slightly decreasing at the time of the rise. The recordings were filmed with the Nikon P1000 and the Sony a7sIII.
