The March full moon, known as the Worm Moon, Crow Moon, Sap Moon or Lenten Moon, always shines in or near the stars of Leo. Full moons always rise in the east as the sun sets, and set in the west at sunrise. When fully illuminated, the moon's geology is enhanced, especially the contrast between the ancient cratered highlands and the younger smoother maria. This full moon is occurring 1.5 days before perigee, the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth, making this the first of four consecutive supermoons in 2021.

The stormy, centuries-old maelstrom of Jupiter's Great Red Spot was shaken but not destroyed by a series of anticyclones that crashed into it over the past few years.

The smaller storms cause chunks of red clouds to flake off, shrinking the larger storm in the process. But a new study finds that these disruptions are "superficial." They are visible to us, but only skin deep on the Red Spot, not affecting its full depth.

The new study was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, AGU's journal for research on the formation and evolution of the planets, moons and objects of our solar system and beyond.

The Red Spot has been shrinking for at least the past 150 years, dropping from a length of about 40,000 kilometers (24,850 miles) in 1879 to about 15,000 kilometers (9,320 miles) today, and researchers still aren't sure about the causes of the decrease, or indeed how the spot was formed in the first place. The new findings show the small anticyclones may be helping to maintain the Great Red Spot ...

A common element of UFO reports is that cars or other vehicles cease functioning during the sighting and often restart on their own after the UFO’s departure. Many researchers have speculated that this is an effect of electromagnetism, possibly related to an advanced system of propulsion. This seems to be a reasonable hypothesis and one that could be tested. All one would need would be a car and a source of electromagnetism ...

The case that first brought attention to this aspect of the phenomenon was the 1957 incident involving a farm worker, Pedro Saucedo, who called in to Levelland, Texas Patrolman Abe Fowler to report a very strange encounter that left him and a co-worker, Joe Salaz, shaken and mystified. In a field, they said, they saw a bright blue flash, which drew their attention. The source of the light was a cigar or torpedo-shaped object around 200 feet long. As they watched, the object, glowing blue-green, lifted up and came towards the truck.

Patrolman Fowler assumed that Saucedo was either drunk or making a prank call and dismissed his report ...

"I saw 4 of them flying in a square formation towards Yuma, couldn’t pull my phone out fast enough for those though, and the movement on those were crazy. Maybe next time I’m down there I’ll catch them on camera. In all my years here I’ve never seen them have full on lights beaming down. Maybe flashes of red and green here and there like a normal plane/jet but I’ve never seen 4 of them flying in a square, solid white light the whole time. They all disappeared at the same time. Only thing that was letting me see them was the crazy amount of light they were emitting, so it just looked like someone just turned some lights off lol.

Yuma Proving Grounds does military testing but I’ve never seen sh-t like this in all 23 years of living here, I wish I could’ve recorded the 4 flying in a square formation but I couldn’t pull my phone out fast enough after I was done being in awe. I saw no smoke trails like in the video. I was literally trying to see where smoke would be if they were flares but I couldn’t see a single column of smoke. It was from my phone, Samsung S20. Would've been awesome if I had a Nikon lol. Right after the BP checkpoint leaving Yuma, they were by the mountains."

BOCA CHICA, TX — SpaceX's latest Starship prototype, SN11, took to the skies over Texas on Tuesday morning (March 30), following a 24-hour delay. But something went wrong.

The rocket soared to an altitude of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) before beginning the landing procedure. But at nearly six minutes into the flight, SpaceX's broadcast cameras cut out. "Looks like we've had another exciting test of Starship Number 11," John Insprucker, launch commentator for SpaceX, said during the broadcast. "Starship 11 is not coming back, do not wait for the landing."

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said something appeared to go wrong with one of SN11's Raptor engines, called engine 2.

Amateur Astronomer's Interstellar Comet May Be Most Pristine Ever Found

New observations with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO's VLT) indicate that the rogue comet 2I/Borisov, which is only the second and most recently detected interstellar visitor to our Solar System, is one of the most pristine ever observed. Astronomers suspect that the comet most likely never passed close to a star, making it an undisturbed relic of the cloud of gas and dust it formed from.

2I/Borisov was discovered by amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov in August 2019 and was confirmed to have come from beyond the Solar System a few weeks later.

"2I/Borisov could represent the first truly pristine comet ever observed," says Stefano Bagnulo of the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, Northern Ireland, UK, who led the new study.

Piece of Wright Brothers' 1st Airplane Now On Mars

When NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down on Mars in February, it carried a bit of the Wright brothers' first airplane with it.

A swatch of fabric from the airplane, known as the Flyer, is secured beneath the solar panels of an experimental helicopter, which in turn is strapped to the underside of the rover.

"While Ingenuity will attempt the first powered, controlled flight on another planet, the first powered, controlled flight on Earth took place Dec. 17, 1903," when the Wright brothers launched their first airplane in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, according to a NASA statement. 

The brothers used an unbleached muslin material to cover the aircraft's wings. The Ingenuity chopper carries a bit of that muslin, wrapped in insulating tape and secured to a cable within the helicopter.

"Wilbur and Orville Wright would be pleased to know that a little piece of their 1903 Wright Flyer I, the machine that launched the Space Age by barely one quarter of a mile, is going to soar into history again on Mars," Amanda Wright Lane and Stephen Wright, the Wright brothers’ great-grandniece and great-grandnephew, said in a statement.

The star Acrux – aka Alpha Crucis – is the brightest star in the constellation of the Southern Cross. This constellation’s official name is Crux. The star Acrux is the 13th brightest star in all the sky. Because it’s located far to the south of the sky’s equator, this star can’t be seen from much of North America. You need to be south of central Florida or south Texas.

Acrux is really two stars. Acrux is located about 321 light-years from Earth, and it is, in fact, not one star but two nearly identical B-class stars.

Animal intelligence is an oft-disputed and highly subjective topic. The discussion sometimes revolves around the smartest dog breeds, just how capable chimpanzees are of acting like humans or what kind of problems an octopus can solve. But dolphins come up again and again as one of the most gifted species on the planet.

In fact, they are sometimes cited as being the second sharpest animals on the planet after ourselves, though it should be noted that Douglas Adams clocked humans just after the marine mammals at third place.

“Man has always assumed that he is more intelligent than dolphins because he has achieved so much — the wheel, New York, wars and so on — while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time,” the science fiction writer wrote in his book So Long and Thanks for all the Fish. “But, conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man — for precisely the same reasons.”

Neuroscientist Lori Marino, president of The Whale Sanctuary Project, who has studied dolphin brains and intelligence for 30 years, does not disagree.

"We’ve always known they’re smart, going back thousands of years. They have culture, they use tools, they have complex societies,” she says, adding that observations of their curiosity go back at least to ancient Greece.

The men begin to talk and I hear a kind of electrical whirring noise. They are speaking about starting something and I have the sense that the liquid that has been injected into my body is to facilitate an electrical impulse inside my body.

The sensation is unlike any other I have felt; I can feel my muscles contracting without me actively doing this. My bones feel as if they are stretching, I want to move but cannot, nor can I speak. My skin feels very tight, as if it’s stretching. I can feel my muscles growing, my whole anatomy changing. My fingers feel as if they’re getting longer. I feel my tail begin to emerge and grow, and my skin changes to scales. Throughout the shift I am laying on my back and I feel a certain familiarity about the change although with an unfamiliar sense of it being forced, taking place quickly and painfully. I can feel my nails touching the bed sheet where they have grown longer. My long hair has gone, my eyes have changed, and I can feel the scales on my skin. I am now in full Reptilian form.

I stand up and see myself in my other form. It feels familiar and comfortable, and I feel good. I notice a full-length mirror to the left of the stairs and look at my reflection. I have dark green scales, yellow eyes with black slits, a muscular body, a tail and increased height and body mass. I feel happy to be in my Reptilian form, but annoyed that the military has forced me to change shape and angry that they are observing me—they do not have a right to. I had not consented to them taking me and forcing me to change shape.

"The night was partly cloudy and pretty windy but the light seemed not to react to the wind conditions at all. The ball of light seemed to be at about 3000 Ft. altitude and appeared to descend just into the cloud deck and bob in and out, eventually coming to a hover near the bottom of the clouds. ( Estimate 2500 ft.) There was no noise and it seemed to move effortlessly in any direction. The speed seemed excessive for a drone at the altitude it appeared to be at."

The light continued in an east-southeast direction for about 30-45 more seconds before it became more distant and disappeared; then the sky was completely dark in the place it one was."

One day later, on the 7th, the Moon has slid to the left and is now 5° below Jupiter. Once it reappears in the evening sky, it passes near the bright star Aldebaran on the 15th, sitting below Mars on the 16th, and slides just to the left of the bright star Pollux on the 19th.

NASA Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk revealed the rare, but not unprecedented, discussions with China during a question-and-answer session after a March 23 speech at a meeting of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee, when a committee member asked him about what insight the agency had about Chinese space activities.

Jurczyk noted that NASA’s knowledge of China’s space program is largely limited to publicly available information because of restrictions placed by federal law on its interactions with Chinese organizations. Those restrictions allow NASA to engage with China only if approved by Congress.

Any exchange of information between NASA and any Chinese organization is restricted by what’s commonly known as the “Wolf Amendment” after former congressman Frank Wolf, who a decade ago chaired the House appropriations subcommittee that funds NASA and first included the restrictions.

Japanese military strengthens ties with U.S. Space Command

WASHINGTON — U.S. Space Command announced April 1 it has signed an agreement with Japan that will increase collaboration on space security.

Under the agreement, an officer from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force will be assigned full-time at U.S. Space Command headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. 

U.S. Space Command has been working with Japan for some time on space situational data sharing agreements, missile warning data sharing and through multinational space events. In December the U.S. Space Force and Japan’s Office of National Space Policy agreed to launch two U.S. payloads on Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, a constellation used for regional navigation. 

“While we have had a strong working relationship with our Japanese counterparts for decades, this arrangement codifies the relationship by placing a Japanese liaison officer directly into the conversations we are having on space operations,” said U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Michael Bernacchi, Space Command’s director of strategy, plans and policy.

"I was talking on the phone outside when I noticed a Light approaching me from the north. I Watched the light Do some pretty incredible acrobatics before I remembered my cell phone camera. The Light would dim periodically, and simultaneously appear to descend when it did so, usually after a sharp curving maneuver. The color was variable from a deep barely visible red, to a brilliant white, Tending toward yellowish most of the time. Most of the more startling color changes are not on the video. There was no noise and it seemed to move effortlessly in any direction. The speed seemed excessive for a drone at the altitude it appeared to be at. This is not the first time I have seen This Phenomena in this area, but it is the first time I have captured it on video."

Not Too Big Not Too Small

Black holes are famous for devouring everything that gets too close, including light.

“Black holes don’t emit anything,” said Daniel Holz, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago. “So they’re just really hard to find.”

An intermediate-mass black hole is the missing link between two other kinds of black holes more familiar to astronomers – supermassive ones lurking at the centers of galaxies – and stellar black holes, often formed in the implosions that take place when massive stars explode as supernovae. The math says there should be many mid-size black holes around, but finding them has been hard. This week, though, astronomers published a new discovery of a long-sought “goldilocks” black hole, with a mass of about 55,000 suns.

Serpent Mound is a 1,370 ft long effigy mound in Adam's County, Ohio and sits on the edge of a meteor impact crater that is 4.5 km across and has powerful magnetic and gravitational anomalies. New research has found that as the number of satellites in Earth orbit continues to increase, their accumulated light pollution will brighten the night sky – making it much harder to do fundamental astronomy.

The continued launch of so-called “mega-constellations” of satellites, used to power global internet access, has been met with concern by astronomers worldwide. Those astronomers worry that individual exposures of distant objects will be ruined by a satellite crossing in front of the telescope.

But new research recently appearing in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society paints an even more grim picture. As more and more satellites go up, they each contribute a small amount to the overall brightness of the sky, something called light pollution.

“Unlike ground-based light pollution, this kind of artificial light in the night sky can be seen across a large part of the Earth’s surface,” explained John Barentine, Director of Public Policy for the International Dark-Sky Association and a study co-author. “Astronomers build observatories far from city lights to seek dark skies, but this form of light pollution has a much larger geographical reach.”

To truly see bioluminescence, you must be there. But skilled photographers with the right gear can offer a glimpse: Alfia Rapicano used a six-second shutter speed to capture this moment at Jervis Bay in Australia.

You’ve likely heard of sea creatures that glow underwater. What about the sea itself appearing to glow in the dark? This fantasy-like spectacle is commonly called bioluminescence. And you can observe the phenomenon in places around the world.

Technically, the water itself isn’t glowing. The sparkle effect comes from a type of tiny algae known as dinoflagellates. Mangrove trees often flank the bodies of water, providing a rich habitat for nutrients that sustain dinoflagellates.

Travelers can find several well-known bio bays glowing nearly year-round in the Caribbean: Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica, Bio Bay in the Cayman Islands, Salt River Bay in St. Croix, and three in Puerto Rico, including Mosquito Bay, which went dark for several months following Hurricane Maria.

A New Way To See Inside Neutron Stars

Imagine trying to study an object light-years away that is less than 20 kilometers in diameter. The object is so dense that it’s made of material that can’t exist naturally on Earth. This is the challenge astronomers face when studying neutron stars, so they have to devise ingenious ways to do it. Recently a team figured out how to study them by using the power of resonance.

Resonance occurs when energy is given to a system near the natural oscillation frequency of an object. For example, if you want to make a swing go high, you can’t just pump your legs at any speed. You have to time things so that you are in sync with the natural motion of the swing. Do it right, and you can really get the swing going. Resonance is used in all kinds of things, from the receiver on your mobile phone to amusement park wave pools.

Perhaps the most famous demonstration of resonance is the 1970s Memorex commercial where jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald sang a high C so loud and pure that she could shatter a wine glass. Ella’s note was close enough to the natural frequency of the glass that it vibrated strongly enough for the glass to shatter. This is essentially the method the team used, but instead of sound, the study relied on gravitational waves to do the shattering.

When two neutron stars orbit each other closely, the gravitational attraction between them can cause the surface of these stars to flex slightly. If the rate of this flexing is in sync with a natural frequency of the star, the flexing builds to the point that the surface of the neutron star cracks, similar to the way a wine glass shatters. When the surface cracks, the star emits a bright burst of gamma rays. The effect is known as a Resonant Shattering Flare. We can observe these gamma-ray flares every time the surface shatters.

On Friday, Amazon's PR team issued a response to the Wisconsin congressman it mocked for pointing out that overworked Amazon employees often pee in bottles on the job. The response, while apologizing for the company’s initial lie denying the practice, also made things much worse by continuing to misrepresent the reality of working at the online retail giant and attempting to take the focus off of Amazon. 

Rep. Mark Pocan made a tweet asking how the company could call itself a "progressive workplace" while union-busting and making its workers pee in bottles. In a reply, Amazon didn't deny the union-busting charge but said, "You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us."

What followed was over a week of leaks and reporting confirming in excruciating detail how widespread the practice is at Amazon and how much the company knew about it. Motherboard shared pictures from and conversations with Amazon drivers who urinated in bottles, and revealed how much worse the problem was for women drivers ...

On Monday night late night show host Jimmy Fallon frantically attempted to stop an Alexa surveillance unit from answering questions about the company’s poor track record on working conditions and union-busting.

Fallon was running a segment in which he and guest John Oliver were playing a game where they were attempting to get Amazon’s Alexa to say particular words.

“Speak from your heart, Alexa. Your rotten heart," Oliver chimed in, before shifting gears and asking, "How bad are Amazon working conditions?”

Fallon tries to interrupt in a way that comes off as just a little too desperate and panicked to be completely in on the joke, leading Oliver to ask, “Alexa, what is union-busting?” At this point Fallon starts begging the surveillance unit to listen to him, instead of Oliver.

It’s not particularly important or surprising that Fallon wouldn’t want to ruffle feathers on his show, which when it’s not normalizing fascists or union-busting is dedicated to pretending every inane thing a celebrity could possibly say is both epic and hilarious.

NASA Invites Public to Take Flight With Ingenuity Mars Helicopter

NASA is targeting no earlier than Sunday, April 11, for Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s first attempt at powered, controlled flight on another planet. To mark a month of Ingenuity flights, the agency will host several events to bring people along for the ride.

A livestream confirming Ingenuity’s first flight is targeted to begin around 3:30 a.m. EDT Monday, April 12, on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website, and will livestream on multiple agency social media platforms, including the JPL YouTube and Facebook channels.

The 1959 sightings of Father William Gill in New Guinea, then an Australian territory, were well known and much discussed in the 1960s and 1970s. Given the multiple witnesses over two nights, observation of occupants and the credibility of the reporting witness, an Anglican missionary, it made for a sensational encounter. In all about 25 adults, including five teachers, three medical workers, and approximately a dozen children saw the event. Even more incredible, the craft and occupants sighted seemed to respond to the witnesses throughout the encounter.

In the summer of 1914, German top brass ordered a full-frontal assault on Osowiec Fortress, located in north-eastern Poland. Three times the Germans tried to gain control of the fortress, and three times they failed.

The fourth time, though, was different. Germany sent no less than 14 battalions of infantry, sappers, siege guns, and artillery for the last attack on the fortification. However, unlike previous assaults on the fortress, they had a new weapon that would make all the difference: chlorine gas.

This is the dire tale of the brave Russian soldiers who fought for their country despite being outnumbered and experiencing unimaginable physical pain. It's also a great reminder of why chemical warfare is banned all over the world.

"First published in 1737, William Whiston’s The Genuine Works of Flavius Josephus has long helped people fill out the accounts of Jewish history found in the Bible with Josephus’s sometimes complementary records set down during the “eighties” of the first century CE.

One striking story to appear in Josephus’s Antiquities of the Jews was one unknown to the Bible. Josephus tells us of two pillars: one brick, one stone, on which the descendants of Seth (Adam’s third son) inscribe all they’ve learned of astronomy, to save the knowledge from a coming destruction of the earth by either fire or water, prophesied by God to Adam and passed on to his descendants. If it were a flood, a stone pillar would still stand to testify to what others had achieved.

Josephus places the story as part of his Noah’s Flood account, for there we learn of why God was prepared to destroy all living things on earth, being sorry for ever having made a world that could go so wrong. Noah shows a similar respect for God to that displayed by his great grandfather Enoch, who, Genesis tells us, “walked with God”. The story goes that an ancient Egyptian queen, Berenice, feared for her husband’s life as he went into battle. She prayed to Aphrodite, promising to cut off her long, luxurious curls if the king returned safely. He did, and Berenice kept her promise and cut off her hair, placing it as a sacrifice on Aphrodite’s altar.

But the next day the hair was gone!

The king was enraged that the temple priests had not protected the precious hair of the queen. A quick-thinking astronomer saved the day, by pointing to the cascading stars at the end of Leo’s tail. It’s said that he told the king that these were the queen’s tresses, placed in the sky by Aphrodite – goddess of love – to honor the queen’s sacrifice.

The king and queen were appeased, and no priests were beheaded. And, today, Coma Berenices – or Berenice’s Hair – is one of the 88 official constellations.

Archeologists in Egypt have announced a “lost golden city,” reportedly unearthed near the southern city of Luxor, Egypt, in the region of the Valley of the Kings. The archaeological mission – led by the famous Egyptian scientist Zahi Hawass – said in a statement on April 8, 2021, that the discovery could be the most significant find in Egypt since 1922, when British archaeologists discovered the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamen. The lost city is known as Aten. It is 3, 000 years old and dates to the reign of Amenhotep III, the ninth king of ancient Egypt’s 18th dynasty who ruled the country from 1391 to 1353 B.C.

Mars Helicopter Ingenuity About to Make History on Another World

NASA is about to make history on the Red Planet with the first controlled, powered flight on another world.

This Sunday (April 11), NASA's Mars Helicopter Ingenuity is expected to make the first-ever flight on Mars, a historic liftoff for the 4-pound (1.8 kilograms) craft. This flight will come 118 years after the Wright Brothers made their first successful powered flight on Earth and 60 years after the first human spaceflight, made by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin April 12, 1961. 

Ingenuity is considered a "technology demonstration," because its planned flights on Mars are designed simply to show that this technology works. While the helicopter does have an onboard camera to take images throughout its mission, that is its only onboard feature not directly related to flying.

Two companies, Virgin Galactic (craft pictured above) and Blue Origin, are building spacecraft capable of sending private clients on suborbital flights to the edge of space lasting several minutes.

Some 600 people have booked flights on Virgin Galactic, the company owned by British billionaire Richard Branson, and thousands more are on a waiting list. The cost per flight? $200,000 to $250,000.

Blue Origin, owned by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, has not yet published prices or a calendar.

I was walking my dog in the park as I noticed my dog look up toward me and for some reason I also looked up and noticed the bright roundish shaped object in the video I took. I heard absolutely nothing at all. This area does see it's fair share of military helicopters, osprey, coast guard, and E2 Greyhounds - my father flew c-130's and I've also seen them here as well...and all of them are loud. Sound here travels really far especially at night which is also part of what drew my attention. The video was taken after I confirmed on a flight radar app on my phone that it was not a commercial aircraft - and this app sometimes shows military without call signs - that wasn't present at all so I turned on the camera to film. I checked satellites when I got home and didn't see any with a western trajectory - not to say they don't exist...but this thing wasn't moving satellite fast - it was moving more like a a commercial airliner....but clearly wasn't. My eye didn't detect the flashing you can see in the video - it was definitively *not* flashing to the naked eye as it is in the video."
