One very easy pattern to find at this time of year is the magnificent constellation Orion the Hunter, now descending in the west after sunset. Orion is easy to find because it contains a very noticeable pattern of three medium-bright stars in a short straight row. These stars represent Orion’s Belt. If you can find Orion, you can use it to star hop to Sirius, the sky’s brightest star, in the constellation Canis Major.

Yuri Gagarin: How the First Man in Space Sparked a Conspiracy Theory

Space Mysteries: Before the cosmonaut orbited the Earth, rumors abounded that someone else already had.

Everybody knows that Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. Most are also aware that he wasn't the first to go into space. After all, Alan Shepard paved the way for American astronauts on May 5, 1961, while Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin stole a march by rocketing into Earth orbit a few weeks earlier on April 12. Or did he? 

Today Gagarin's name is cemented in the record books, and he instantly became a national hero across the Soviet Union. Presented as a triumph of the fiercely fought Space Race against the U.S., the 27 year old, who had been chosen just three days before the mission, spent 108 minutes in space, orbited the Earth and returned fit and well following a drama-filled flight.

And yet, before he even embarked on his journey skywards, doubt was seeded in many a person's mind. For rumors had surfaced that the Soviets had successfully launched a man into space before Gagarin set foot in Vostok 1, and the talk was that one cosmonaut had done so on April 7, just five days earlier ...

Hydrostatic equilibrium is one of the defining characteristics of a planet. If a planet were stationary and of uniform density, then at equilibrium, it would be a perfect sphere. But planets rotate, and the faster they rotate ...

The most extreme case in our solar system is likely the dwarf planet Haumea, which rotates every 4 hours

Astronomers have found more than 2,800 brown dwarfs. For most of them, we only know their basic properties, but for 78 of them, we know their rotation periods. We can measure this by observing the dwarf’s variation in brightness over time. Since their cloud layer has weather features like Jupiter, the periodicity of their brightness tells us their rate of rotation. When the team analyzed the rotational periods of these worlds, they found that the shortest rotational periods were just over an hour. Three of the brown dwarfs studied had periods of about an hour, which would indicate an upper limit.

Federal agencies are preparing to implement new disclosure requirements for scientists outlined in National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33), a document issued by the White House on 14 January. Although scientists already routinely report certain biographical and financial information during the grant application process, NSPM-33 establishes minimum standards across agencies for what information must be collected.

Enhancing disclosure has become a priority for policymakers seeking to identify scientists who maintain problematic ties to foreign institutions, such as employment arrangements that could lead to “hidden diversions” of intellectual property, found and prosecuted for the first time under the Trump administration.

Universities are concerned about the scope of information sought from scientists receiving federal funding, and have formally petitioned the Biden administration asking for changes, to no avail.

Humans have taken their litterbug ways to space. None of it has been removed – no one knows how.

There are currently over 129 million objects larger than a millimetre in orbit around Earth. These range from inactive satellites to an astronaut's glove. But no matter how small the item, anything travelling up to 56,000 km/h in an orbit is dangerous if it comes into contact with the many satellites that connect us around the world, be it for GPS, mobile phone data or internet connectivity.

An international meeting of scientists, the 8th European Conference on Space Debris, will address the issue later this month.

In the middle of the barren Nevada desert, there's a dusty unmarked road that leads to the front gate of Area 51. It's protected by little more than a chain link fence, a boom gate, and intimidating trespassing signs. One would think that America's much mythicized top secret military base would be under closer guard, but make no mistake. They are watching.

What exactly goes on inside of Area 51 has led to decades of wild speculation. There are, of course, the alien conspiracies that galactic visitors are tucked away somewhere inside. The first bright object that moved, I didn't actually see it move it just appeared at a different spot in like seconds. Imagine 3 dots lined horizontally and the furthest to the right all of a sudden fades away and reappears diagonally. Then the furthest left disappears. The middle remains hovering. Then the one diagonal appears to be dimming and fading in and out and eventually all disappeared. I didn't see them move or zip away just poof gone. Later I looked up at the stars and constellations noticing how small the real stars actually looked. The lights I saw has to be 20x bigger looking than the stars."

Purpose-built lasers could give derelict satellites a slight ‘push’ of photons, imparting just enough energy to change the debris’s orbit and prevent an impending collision.

Get down to my house, the streetlights were all on again. My daughter says you look like you seen a ghost. Gimme a kiss, I'm getting ready to go to bed. I didn't think nothing about that til much later when I heard them talking about missing time. I realized: it was ten o'clock, she's talking about going to bed? Streetlights going out. I called up Bootsy and made him repeat everything that happened. I said, what time was it? He said, that morning, we had just left the studio. I said, well, what was Barbarella doing when you got home? She was getting ready to go to bed. And that's all I needed. It spooked both of us. We had never really talked about it, but we knew. The missing time. Now, George, ain't that funking kind of hard on you?"

"12 or so balls of yellow light with a cylindrical object below. Went out in the backyard between 9:30 and 10:00 pm to call my dog in. Observed yellow balls of light about the size of tennis balls that looked like they were on fire shooting up into the sky. Ran in the house and got my sister and my cell phone. Started videoing. Thought it might be Chinese lanterns or something but the balls made a square pattern and then one would go out and another would shoot up and join the others and make a triangle. Then one would fade off and go out and it would make a bigger arrow shape. When I uploaded the video to my desktop where I had a bigger screen, there is a cylindrical or barrel shaped object down below that was not visible with the naked eye. Everyone is trying to tell me that these were starlink satellites but I don't believe it. They did not look or launch in the straight line of lights that you associate with those . Just looking for anyone who knows what this might be and if anything like it has been seen before."

A few years ago researchers using the radio-based Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) performed an extraordinary observation, the likes of which remains a dream for most other astronomers. The EHT team announced in April 2019 that it had successfully imaged the shadow of a supermassive black hole in a nearby galaxy by combining observations from eight different radio telescopes spread across our planet. This technique, called interferometry, effectively gave the EHT the resolution, or the ability to distinguish sources in the sky, of an Earth-sized telescope.

This technique is reminiscent of the iconic double-slit experiment, first performed by physicist Thomas Young in 1801, in which light falls on an opaque barrier that has two slits through which it can pass. The light recombines on the other side of the barrier, creating an interference pattern of bright and dark stripes, also known as an interferogram.

“If we have two telescopes that can be made to behave like Young’s slits, and we are able to get an interferogram on a source of light, like a star on the sky, the interferogram tells you a lot of things about the source,” says astronomer Jonathan Bland-Hawthorn of the University of Sydney.

Astronauts who spend extended time in space face stressors such as isolation, confinement, lack of privacy, altered light-dark cycles, monotony and separation from family. Interestingly, so do people who work at international research stations in Antarctica, where the extreme environment is characterized by numerous stressors that mirror those present during long-duration space exploration.

To better understand the psychological hurdles faced by astronauts, University of Houston professor of psychology Candice Alfano and her team developed the Mental Health Checklist (MHCL), a self-reporting instrument for detecting mental health changes in isolated, confined, extreme (ICE) environments.

The universe holds many mysteries, but none as elusive, or abundant, as dark matter

Dark matter makes up around 85 percent of all matter in the universe and about 27 percent of its total mass, outweighing visible matter around six to one.
Researchers are quite confident dark matter exists — but they haven’t been able to prove it exists with direct, observational evidence. That doesn’t mean we’re asked to believe in it based on faith: Through a process of elimination, the science is real and tangible.

In 1933, astronomer Fritz Zwicky noticed something missing from the universe. Zwicky was observing galaxy clusters when he noted that the total mass of matter was greater than what was being directly observed. He calculated the difference in visible versus invisible matter based on the motions of the galaxies near the edge of the cluster. Therefore, some form of mass has to be in between cosmic bodies holding them in place through sheer gravitational force. That missing mass was dubbed dunkle materie by Zwicky, or dark matter.

Later on in the 1970s, astronomer Vera Rubin followed up on Zwicky’s work by estimating that most galaxies must contain about six times as much dark matter as visible mass.

Although they strongly believe it exists, scientists aren’t exactly sure what makes up dark matter. The two leading hypotheses are summed up by two stellar acronyms:

• WIMPS
• MACHO

WIMPS — One hypothesis is that it may be made up of exotic particles such as WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). WIMPs are hypothetical particles that don’t interact strongly with other particles, nor do they absorb or emit light.

MACHO — Another possible explanation for dark matter is the MACHO (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Object) hypothesis. MACHOs are believed to be made up of ordinary matter that emits little to no light and drifts through space as wandering cosmic bodies.

James Dickinson told lawmakers on Capitol Hill that congestion in space mostly fueled by commercial activity could create safety problems if it’s not managed. 

“We need a new level of awareness,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson noted that the three largest constellations of satellites today are operated by commercial companies: SpaceX, Planet and Spire.

“Commercial opportunities open new possibilities, but can also complicate access to the domain with the proliferation of mega constellations,” he said.

If you’re looking to attract the widest variety of birds, experts agree black sunflower seeds are your best bet. However, you can also customize your offerings in the hopes of seeking out particular species. The End of Space Access?

Many recent articles have expressed concern about the growing amount of junk floating around Earth in low orbits. Ultimately, the mass and distribution of junk and active satellites will exceed the capacity of space to safely contain the debris generated by the addition of more than an estimated 50,000 new satellites planned for deployment in the next few years. Saturn’s rings are one of the most recognized and revered celestial objects known to the human race. From a distance, they look like a disk of layered crystal or multicolored disks within disks that wrap around Saturn’s hazy umber face. When viewed up close, we see that these rings are actually particles of water ice (from microns to icebergs), as well as silicates, carbon dioxide, and ammonia.

Saturn’s rings and moons have been the subject of scientific debate. A 2019 study showed that the migration of Saturn’s moons has widened the Cassini Division in Saturn’s rings.

We would also noticed that the rings have some interesting orbital mechanics. In fact, each ring has a different orbit that is the result of its proximity to Saturn (i.e., the closer they are, the faster they orbit). To illustrate what this complex system look like, NASA Fellow Dr. James O’Donoghue created a stunning animation that shows how each of Saturn’s major ring segments (A-Ring to F-Ring) orbit together around the planet.

At first, they provided a new type of heavenly spectacle. But SpaceX's Starlink internet satellite trains traveling across the sky in neat formations after the launch of each batch of the megaconstellation's spacecraft have long annoyed astronomers.

The IAU has now decided to take the issue to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS), according to Thomas Schildknecht, the deputy director of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern, Switzerland, who represents Switzerland in the IAU. The organization of astronomers is requesting that UN COPUOS protect the sky's darkness for the sake of future advancements in astronomy.

"These trains are nice and impressive, but do we really want to see them everywhere?" Schildknecht said on April 20 in a news conference organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) during the 8th European Space Debris Conference held virtually from Darmstadt, Germany, April 20 to 23. "Do we want to see them in the Australian outback? In Antarctica? Or in the very dark regions of Chile?"
