Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays twist and turn on their way to Earth, which has made it nearly impossible to identify the monsters that create them.

In the 1930s, the French physicist Pierre Auger placed Geiger counters along a ridge in the Alps and observed that they would sometimes spontaneously click at the same time, even when they were up to 300 meters apart. He knew that the coincident clicks came from cosmic rays, charged particles from space that bang into air molecules in the sky, triggering particle showers that rain down to the ground. But Auger realized that for cosmic rays to trigger the kind of enormous showers he was seeing, they must carry fantastical amounts of energy — so much that, he wrote in 1939, “it is actually impossible to imagine a single process able to give to a particle such an energy.”

Upon constructing larger arrays of Geiger counters and other kinds of detectors, physicists learned that cosmic rays reach energies at least 100,000 times higher than Auger supposed.

In 2017, the Pierre Auger Observatory announced a major discovery. With its 1,600 particle detectors and 27 telescopes dotting a patch of Argentinian prairie the size of Rhode Island, the observatory had recorded the air showers of hundreds of thousands of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays over the previous 13 years. The team reported that 6% more of the rays come from one half of the sky than the other

Since the Soviet Union launched the first space station, Salyut 1, 50 years ago, humans have lived on a total of 11 such facilities in Earth orbit. China will soon add one more to that list. With the core module of the Chinese Space Station (CSS) scheduled to lift off at the end of April, the culmination of a project the nation’s government initially envisioned in 1992 is finally entering the construction phase.

After the core module reaches space, China plans at least 10 more launches of other major modules, as well as crewed and cargo missions, to complete the station’s assembly by the end of 2022. At that time the CSS will join the International Space Station (ISS) as the only fully operational space stations in orbit ...

Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist who became the first woman to win a Nobel prize. Along with her husband Pierre, she discovered two elements: polonium and radium. She also carried out pioneering research into radioactivity. At the time no one knew about the effects of radioactivity on the body, so they handled the elements they used in their research without any of the precautions or protective clothing we would use today. Curie even kept vials of what she was working on in her pockets or her desk drawers. More than 100 years after their discoveries, the couple’s notebooks are still so radioactive they have to be kept in lead-lined boxes and handled only while wearing protective clothing.

Am 27. April um 5:31 Uhr (MESZ) ist Vollmond. Da der Mond zudem mit rund 357 Tausend Kilometern Entfernung auf seiner elliptischen Bahn um die Erde seinen erdnächsten Punkt erreicht, wird er auch umgangssprachlich Supermond genannt. Zudem fällt aktuell häufiger auch der Name rosa Mond. Dies hat aber nichts mit der tatsächlichen Farbe des Mondes zu tun, sondern ist auf amerikanische Ureinwohner zurückzuführen, die vermutlich dem Vollmond im April diesem Namen gegeben haben, da dann auch rosafarbene Blumen blühen. Im Mai, also schon nächsten Monat, ist übrigens der nächste "Supermond".

The solar surface, on the other hand, is a 'pleasant' 9,900 degrees F (5,500 degrees C). The difference defies logic, and scientists have long known some unknown mechanism must be at play.

The mysterious heating of the sun’s corona might be powered by miniature solar flares dubbed 'campfires,' discovered by the European-US Solar Orbiter mission last year, a new study suggests.

The campfires, some 250 and 2500 miles (400 to 4000 km) in diameter, might seem large from the human perspective. But they’re actually tiny compared to the better known but rarer solar flares that cause magnetic storms on Earth, as well as beautiful aurora borealis displays ...

An eruption was captured today (Sunday) by the STEREO Ahead spacecraft and a coronal mass ejection (CME) is now becoming visible. Astronomers using Earth-based radar observations have measured some of the fundamental properties of the planet Venus: the precise length of a day, the tilt of its axis, and the size of its core.

“Venus is Earth’s nearest planetary neighbor and closest analogue in the Solar System in terms of mass, radius and density,” said Professor Jean-Luc Margot of UCLA. “However, Venus remains enigmatic on a variety of fundamental levels: the size of its core is unknown, whether the core is solid or liquid is uncertain and estimates of its average spin period are discordant.”

On 21 separate occasions from 2006 to 2020, the astronomers aimed radio waves at Venus from the 70-m-wide Goldstone antenna in California’s Mojave Desert. Several minutes later, those radio waves bounced off Venus and came back to Earth. The radio echo was picked up at Goldstone and at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia. WASHINGTON — The Center for the Study of the Presidency & Congress released a new report May 4 calling on the US government to accelerate the procurement of commercial space technologies and manage growing congestion in low-Earth orbit.

CSPC is a nonpartisan think tank led by former members of Congress Mike Rogers, of Michigan; and Glenn Nye, of Virginia. In a 2019 report the group called out DoD for not opening up opportunities for emerging commercial space companies, and was especially critical of the national security space launch program. Many of the same points were made in the 2021 report.

“If the Space Force does not address the underlying issue of acquisition reform, America will lose its competitive edge in space. The commercial space sector has radically reshaped the way countries and companies access space, yet the old model of block-buys, multi-year contracts, and nearly bespoke vehicles remains,” said the CSPC study.

The universe bets on disorder. Imagine, for example, dropping a thimbleful of red dye into a swimming pool. All of those dye molecules are going to slowly spread throughout the water. Physicists quantify this tendency to spread by counting the number of possible ways the dye molecules can be arranged. There’s one possible state where the molecules are crowded into the thimble. There’s another where, say, the molecules settle in a tidy clump at the pool’s bottom. But there are uncountable billions of permutations where the molecules spread out in different ways throughout the water. If the universe chooses from all the possible states at random, you can bet that it’s going to end up with one of the vast set of disordered possibilities.

Seen in this way, the inexorable rise in entropy, or disorder, as quantified by the second law of thermodynamics, takes on an almost mathematical certainty. So of course physicists are constantly trying to break it.

One almost did. A thought experiment devised by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1867 stumped scientists for 115 years. And even after a solution was found, physicists have continued to use “Maxwell’s demon” to push the laws of the universe to their limits ...

New All-Sky Map of the Milky Way’s Galactic Halo

The outer reaches of the Milky Way galaxy are a different place. Stars are much harder to come by, with most of this “galactic halo” being made up of empty space. But scientists theorize that there is an abundance of one particular thing in this desolate area – dark matter. Now, a team from Harvard and the University of Arizona (UA) spent some time studying and modeling one of the galaxy’s nearest neighbors to try to tease out more information about that dark matter, and as a result came up with an all new way to look at the halo itself.

The neighbor they used is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way made up of several billion stars. The resulting star map starts about 200,000 light years away from the center of the Milky Way and continues to about 325,000 light years beyond it. This swath of the outer halo is also the same area the LMC is moving through ...

Placing his bare hands into a swarm of thousands of bees, a Malaysian man uses his fingers to gently guide some of them into a rattan basket.

Ooi Leng Chye is a member of a group that saves bees and their nests when they are discovered in cities, seeking to prevent the creatures from being destroyed by those who view them as pests. Wearing a short-sleeved shirt, trousers and sandals, Ooi—whose day job is as a software developer—was relaxed as he scooped up the bees with his hands into the basket.

"I'm not afraid of them," the 48-year-old said as scores of bees buzzed around his uncovered face. "Bees only attack out of self-defence. They won't attack you for no reason—you just need to understand their behaviour."

"If we do not manage the bees properly, then maybe one day (they) will not be here anymore. Then our future generations will curse us."

For the first time, researchers have deciphered the brain activity associated with trying to write letters by hand. Working with a participant with paralysis who has sensors implanted in his brain, the team used an algorithm to identify letters as he attempted to write them. Then, the system displayed the text on a screen—in real time.

Although the crushing pressures and darkness of the oceanic depths are hostile to us air-breathing humans, we've slowly but surely been learning more about them, thanks to the wonders of robotic technology.

The enigmatic giant squid is rarely observed in its natural habitat. In the first videos of their kind, marine scientists have caught its hunting behavior in the wild - revealing how these monsters of the deep stalk and attack their prey.

For giant squid, the bright lights mounted on underwater vehicles can be uncomfortable for their sensitive, low-light eyes, which can grow to the size of dinner plates; the sound and vibration can also scare off more mobile animals. And, of course, bringing giant squid to the surface won't record their behavior in their natural environment. That's why a team of researchers led by Nathan Robinson of the Oceanographic Foundation in Spain devised a different solution: a passive deep-sea platform, equipped with a camera. Because giant squid eyes are optimized to see shorter-wavelength blue light, they used longer-wavelength red lighting that won't annoy them, in order to see the animals on video ...

A favorite constellation for many, little squarish Corvus the Crow can be found after sunset this time of year. It’s not far from Spica, the only bright star in the constellation Virgo. Once you find Spica, you’ll recognize Corvus easily. It’s always near the star Spica on the sky’s dome and recognizable for its compact, boxy shape. Spica is supposed to represent an Ear of Wheat, held by Virgo the Maiden. The four brightest stars are Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Beta Corvi.

Use the handle of the Big Dipper to locate the star Arcturus, follow the arc in the Dipper’s handle, and "Spy to Spica.”

After you find Spica, Corvus is easy. It’s right next to the bright star, a small boxy pattern that’s noticeable to the eye. Because Corvus is such an easy and fun constellation to pick out in the sky, there are many legends in skylore about it. A lovely one comes from China, where this grouping of stars was seen as an imperial chariot, riding on the wind. In ancient Israel and Greek mythology, Corvus was said to be a raven, not a crow.

China’s first Mars rover is about to land. The rover, named Zhurong ("Fire God"), has been orbiting Mars aboard the Tianwen-1 spacecraft since February. It is expected to touch down on the surface of Mars on 14 May around 23:11 UTC.

Tianwen-1 is China’s second interplanetary mission, but the first the country has attempted solo. The other, called Phobos-Grunt, was a collaboration with Russia that didn’t make it out of Earth’s orbit due to a rocket failure after it launched in 2011. If Zhurong lands successfully, it will make China the third country to land a rover on Mars, after the US and the Soviet Union, whose 1971 rover mission lost contact with Earth after less than 2 minutes on the surface.

Something went wrong at stage two engine ignition. A Rocket Lab Electron booster carrying two commercial satellites failed to reach orbit Saturday (May 15) after suffering an anomaly just minutes after liftoff. 

The launch failure occurred less than three minutes after a launch from Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula, and just after the Electron's two stages separated. Two Earth-observing satellites for the company BlackSky, their flight arranged by the firm Spaceflight, were lost.

Fantastic ridges and swept back shapes strongly suggest that energetic radiation and shock waves from NGC 602's massive young stars have eroded the dusty material and triggered a progression of star formation moving away from the cluster's center. At the estimated distance of the Small Magellanic Cloud, the featured picture spans about 200 light-years, but a tantalizing assortment of background galaxies are also visible in this sharp multi-colored view.
