Even if You Think Discussing Aliens Is Ridiculous, Just Hear Me Out

The most curious subplot in the news right now is the admission, at the most senior levels of the United States government, that the military services have collected visuals, data and testimonials recording flying objects they cannot explain; that they are investigating these phenomena seriously; and that they will, in the coming months, report at least some of their findings to the public. It feels, at times, like the beginning of a film where everyone is going about their lives, even as the earthshaking events unfurl on a silenced television in the background.

A number of stories in The New York Times over the past few years have confirmed the existence of a military program on “Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification” and revealed videos in which trained pilots marvel over unidentified craft apparently defying the limits of known technology.

On April 30, The New Yorker published a revelatory article by Gideon Lewis-Kraus tracking the rise of congressional, military and media interest in U.F.O.s. Harry Reid, the former Senate majority leader from Nevada, emerges as the key actor. In the middle of his decades-long career in government, he pushed to fund these investigations, and since retiring he’s been relentless in voicing his conviction that the military has information on U.F.O.s that the public deserves to know. He told Lewis-Kraus that he believed there was crash debris held by Lockheed Martin, but when he asked the Pentagon to see it, he was refused access. “I tried to get, as I recall, a classified approval by the Pentagon to have me go look at the stuff,” he said. “They would not approve that.”

Language inserted into the 2021 Intelligence Authorization Act gave the government 180 days to gather and analyze the data it has collected, and to release a report on the findings. On Fox News, John Ratcliffe, the former director of national intelligence, was given the opportunity to play down the report, which began under his tenure, and he declined. “When we talk about sightings,” he said, “we are talking about objects that have been seen by Navy or Air Force pilots, or have been picked up by satellite imagery, that frankly engage in actions that are difficult to explain, movements that are hard to replicate, that we don’t have the technology for, or traveling at speeds that exceed the sound barrier without a sonic boom.” Nor are these just eyewitness accounts, made by fallible human observers. “Usually, we have multiple sensors that are picking up these things,” he said.

Perhaps Ratcliffe, a former member of Congress whose sole stint in intelligence came at the tail end of the Trump administration, is simply hyping his work. But that doesn’t explain why a former C.I.A. director, John Brennan, said in an interview with the economist Tyler Cowen that “some of the phenomena we’re going to be seeing continues to be unexplained and might, in fact, be some type of phenomenon that is the result of something that we don’t yet understand and that could involve some type of activity that some might say constitutes a different form of life.” Well then.

To state the obvious: All this is a little weird. None of it is proof of extraterrestrial visitation, of course. And I am not just offering a pro forma disclaimer to cover my firm belief in aliens. I really don’t know what’s behind these videos and reports, and I relish that. In this case, that is my bias: I enjoy the spaciousness of mystery. Evidence that there is intelligent extraterrestrial life, and it has been here, would upend how humanity understands itself and our place in the cosmos. Even if you think all discussion of aliens is ridiculous, it’s fun to let the mind roam over the implications.

The way I’ve framed the thought experiment in recent conversations is this: Imagine, tomorrow, an alien craft crashed down in Oregon. There are no life-forms in it. It’s effectively a drone. But it’s undeniably extraterrestrial in origin. So we are faced with the knowledge that we’re not alone, that we are perhaps being watched, and we have no way to make contact. How does that change human culture and society?

One immediate effect, I suspect, would be a collapse in public trust. Decades of U.F.O. reports and conspiracies would take on a different cast. Governments would be seen as having withheld a profound truth from the public, whether or not they actually did. We already live in an age of conspiracy theories. Now the guardrails would truly shatter, because if U.F.O.s were real, despite decades of dismissals, who would remain trusted to say anything else was false? Certainly not the academics who’d laughed them off as nonsense, or the governments who would now be seen as liars.

“I’ve always resisted the conspiracy narrative around U.F.O.s,” Alexander Wendt, a professor of international security at Ohio State University who has written about U.F.O.s, told me. “I assume the governments have no clue what any of this is and they’re covering up their ignorance, if anything. That’s why you have all the secrecy, but people may think they were being lied to all along.”

The question, then, would be who could impose meaning on such an event. “Instead of a land grab, it would be a narrative grab,” Diana Pasulka, author of “American Cosmic: U.F.O.s, Religion, Technology,” told me. There would be enormous power — and money — in shaping the story humanity told itself. If we were to believe that the contact was threatening, military budgets would swell all over the world. A more pacific interpretation might orient humanity toward space travel or at least interstellar communication. Pasulka says she believes this narrative grab is happening even now, with the military establishment positioning itself as the arbiter of information over any U.F.O. events.

One lesson of the pandemic is that humanity’s desire for normalcy is an underrated force, and there is no single mistake as common to political analysis as the constant belief that this or that event will finally change everything. If so many can deny or downplay a disease that’s killed millions, dismissing some unusual debris would be trivial. “An awful lot of people would basically shrug and it’d be in the news for three days,” Adrian Tchaikovsky, the science fiction writer, told me. “You can’t just say, ‘Still no understanding of alien thing!’ every day. An awful lot of people would be very keen on continuing with their lives and routines no matter what.”

There is a thick literature on how evidence of alien life would shake the world’s religions, but I think Brother Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory, is quite likely right when he suggests that many people would simply say, “of course.” The materialist worldview that positions humanity as an island of intelligence in a potentially empty cosmos — my worldview, in other words — is the aberration. Most people believe, and have always believed, that we share both the Earth and the cosmos with other beings — gods, spirits, angels, ghosts, ancestors. The norm throughout human history has been a crowded universe where other intelligences are interested in our comings and goings, and even shape them. The whole of human civilization is testament to the fact that we can believe we are not alone and still obsess over earthly concerns.

This has even been true with aliens. The science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson reminded me that in the early 1900s it was widely but mistakenly believed that we had visual evidence of canals on Mars. “The scientific community seemed to have validated that finding, even though it was mainly Percival Lowell, but it’s hard to recapture now how general the assumption was,” he wrote in an email. “There being no chance of passage across space, it was assumed to be a philosophical point only, of interest but not world-changing for anyone.”

What might be more world-changing is the way nation-states fall to fighting over the debris, or even just the interpretation of the debris. There’s a long science fiction literature in which the prospect or reality of alien attack unites the human race — Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” and the movie “Independence Day,” to name a couple. But a more ambiguous contact might lead to more fractious results. “The scenario you outline would be politicized immediately on the international stage; the Russians and Chinese would never believe us and frankly large numbers of Americans would be much more likely to believe that Russia or China was behind it,” Anne-Marie Slaughter, the chief executive of New America and a former director of policy planning at the State Department, told me. And that’s to say nothing of the tensions over who actually owned, and thus could research and profit from, the technologies embedded in the debris.

Slaughter went on to make a point about the difficulty of uniting humanity that I’d been contemplating as well. “After all, we are facing the destruction of the planet as we know it and have inhabited it for millennia over a couple of decades, and that does not even unify Americans, much less people around the globe.” If the real threat of climate change hasn’t unified countries and focused our technological and political efforts behind a common purpose, why should the more uncertain threat of aliens?

And yet, I’d like to believe it could be different. Steven Dick, the former chief historian for NASA, has argued that indirect contact with aliens — a radio signal, for instance — would be more like past scientific revolutions than past civilizational collisions. The correct analogy, he suggests, would be the realization that we share our world with bacteria, or that the Earth orbits the sun, or that life is shaped by natural selection. These upheavals in our understanding of the universe we inhabit changed the course of human science and culture, and perhaps this would, too. “There are times in science when just knowing that a thing is possible motivates an effort to get there,” Jacob Foster, a sociologist at U.C.L.A., told me. The knowledge that there were other space-faring societies might make us more desperate to join them or communicate with them.

There’s a school of thought that says interplanetary ambitions are ridiculous when we have so many terrestrial crises. I disagree. I believe our unsolved problems reflect a lack of unifying goals more than a surfeit of them. America made it to the moon in the same decade it created Medicare and Medicaid and passed the Civil Rights Act, and I don’t believe that to be coincidence.

A more cohesive understanding of ourselves as a species, and our planet as one ecosystem among others, might lead us to take more care with what we already have, and the sentient life we already know. The loveliest sentiment I came across while doing this (admittedly odd) reporting was from Agnes Callard, a philosopher at the University of Chicago. “You also asked how we should react,” she said over email. “I guess my preferred reaction would be for the knowledge that someone was watching to inspire us to be the best examples of intelligent life that we could be.”

I recognize this is a treacly place to end up: evidence of extraterrestrial life, or even surveillance, reminding us of what we should already know. But that doesn’t make it less true. Callard’s words brought to mind one of my favorite science fiction stories, “The Great Silence,” by the writer Ted Chiang (whom I interviewed here, in a conversation that explores this fable). In it, he imagines a parrot talking to the humans managing the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, for more than 50 years the largest single dish radio telescope on earth. There we are, creating technological marvels to find life in the stars, while we heedlessly drive wild parrots, among so many others species, toward extinction here at home.

“We’re a nonhuman species capable of communicating with them,” the parrot muses. “Aren’t we exactly what humans are looking for?”

In the telescopic field of view two bright yellowish stars, Mu and Eta Geminorum, stand just below and above the Jellyfish Nebula at the left. Cool red giants, they lie at the foot of the celestial twin. The Jellyfish Nebula itself floats below and left of center, a bright arcing ridge of emission with dangling tentacles. In fact, the cosmic jellyfish is part of bubble-shaped supernova remnant IC 443, the expanding debris cloud from a massive star that exploded. Archaeologist Peter Mungo Jupp details the criteria of eyewitness accounts that some UFO sightings may in fact be plasmoids. Berenice was the daughter of Magas of Cyrene (now Libya) and Queen Apama II. In approximately 249 BC, her father died, making Berenice ruling queen of Cyrene. Soon after, she married Demetrius the Fair, a Macedonian prince. After Demetrius came to Cyrene, he became the lover of her mother, Apama. In a dramatic event, Berenice had hired assassins kill him in Apama's bedroom.

After the death of Demetrius, Berenice married Ptolemy III. During his absence on an expedition to Syria, she dedicated locks of her hair to Aphrodite for his safe return and victory in the Third Syrian War, placing the offering in the temple of the goddess at Zephyrium. By some unknown means, the hair disappeared when Ptolemy returned. A quick-thinking court astrologer explained the phenomenon, saying that the hair had been carried to the heavens and placed among the stars.

Although there were many plots to assassinate her, all became fearful of her "exceptional courage." According to historian Hyginus's Astronomica, when Berenice's father Magas and his troops were routed in battle, Berenice mounted a horse, rallied the remaining forces, killed most of the enemy, and drove the rest to retreat.

The city of Euesperides was refounded by her and received her name, Berenice (now Benghazi). Soon after her second husband's death in 221 BC, she was murdered at the instigation of her son, Ptolemy IV.

For the first time, astronomers have detected traces of heavy metals in the atmospheres of comets – both those whizzing through our Solar System and those from interstellar space.

Scientists have long known that the dusty, rocky interiors of comets harbour solid forms of heavy metals. But these metals have only previously been observed in hot environments, like evaporating comets soaring to close too the Sun or ultra-hot exoplanet atmospheres. Since these heavy metals don’t usually turn to gas (sublimate) at low temperatures, scientists didn’t expect them in the icy atmospheres of comets.

Yet that’s exactly what they found.

The results show that comets from other star systems have much more in common with comets from our own Solar System than we thought. In an accompanying opinion piece, astronomers Dennis Bodewits and Steven J. Bromley conclude: “If we can unravel the origin of iron and nickel in regular comets and this interstellar object, we might uncover a story of organic chemistry between shared different planetary systems.”

An M-class flare erupted today, in active sunspot region 2824. Any associated coronal mass ejection with this event will be Earth-directed. The M1.1-class flare produced a flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. Minutes later, a pulse of UV and X-radiation ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere. This, in turn, caused a minor radio blackout over North America and parts of the Pacific Ocean. Ham radio operators, aviators and mariners might have noticed unusual propagation at frequencies below ~20 MHz.

China became the second country to successfully deploy a vehicle on Mars on Saturday, and the first to do so on its inaugural visit to the Red Planet.

Zhurong first landed on Mars earlier this month and started its journey on Mars’ surface on Utopia Planitia, a smooth plain where NASA’s Viking 2 lander touched down in 1976. That’s more than 1,200 miles from the Jezero Crater where the US rover Perseverance touched down in February. A third rover, NASA’s Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, was spotted by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter climbing up Mars’ Mont Mercou last month.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger claims to have seen at least two UFOs, and I'm sure his publicists told him to shut up after that. In 1968, while camping in Glastonbury with then-girlfriend Marianne Faithful, Jagger saw what he described as a "luminous cigar-shaped mothership" floating across the night sky. A year later, he saw a similar object above the crowd during the famous (or infamous) concert at Altamont Speedway.

The singer was so unnerved he had a "UFO detector", whatever that is, installed at his English estate. I guess it wasn't of much use, as he got rid of it when it kept going off. Guitarist Keith Richards is also on record as saying he has "seen a few, but nothing the Ministries would believe".

An oxygen atom, for example, will glow in the green light commonly emitted by an aurora after being energized by such a collision. The lowest part of an aurora will typically occur about 100 kilometers up, while most clouds exist only below about 10 kilometers. The relative heights of clouds and auroras are shown clearly in this image from Dyrholaey, Iceland. The claim that climate models fail to predict the future or reproduce the past was published in a YouTube video by Ben Davidson on his channel, Suspicious0bservers, which has more than 500,000 subscribers. This video has been watched more than 57,000 times since it was published on May 5, 2021. In the video, Davidson makes numerous false claims about climate models as explained in this review. He shows screenshots of titles and abstracts from recent climate science publications, which he misinterpreted to support his conclusion.

RESPONSE: Inaccurate: The claim that climate models consistently overestimate global warming is inaccurate. Retrospective studies have found that climate models skillfully forecasted the evolution of global surface temperatures over the past few decades.

In the summer of 2014, astronomers watched with giddy anticipation as a cloud of gas, known as G2, swung dangerously close to a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. Sparks didn't fly, nor did a feeding frenzy ensue. Instead, G2 zipped by unscathed, surviving what astronomers thought would be a near-death experience.

But black holes are big bullies, so the fact that the gravity well ignored the gassy passerby was more than surprising. It seemed impossible. Now, astronomers are saying that the supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy is not a black hole at all, but rather a fluffy ball of dark matter. New research suggests this strange hypothesis is able to account for the "impossible" encounter as well as all observations of the galactic center — and then some ... our galaxy's black hole may be something else entirely.

Just after sunset on May 17, 2021 a very large bright white orb of light appeared in the southern sky hovering off the Outer Banks of NC. 'Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse – June 10

The new moon will sweep in front of the sun to create this year’s first solar eclipse on Thursday, June 10. On that day, the moon in its elliptical orbit of Earth will lie too far from us to cover over the sun completely. So a bright annulus – or ring – will surround the new moon silhouette at mid-eclipse. It’s the outer rim of the sun, not quite hidden from view. People have taken to calling these “ring of fire” eclipses. Essentially, they are partial eclipses, albeit very dramatic ones. As with any partial eclipse, you need eye protection to watch an annular eclipse. Watching with the unaided eye will cause eye damage.

In the summer of 1974 New Yorkers were suffering through one of their periodic heat waves. The date was August 23, a Friday night, and in an effort to beat the heat John Lennon and then-girlfriend May Pang had taken their clothes off while they waited for a pizza to be delivered.

Lennon described the scene:

"I was lying naked on my bed, when I had this urge. I went to the window, just dreaming around in my usual poetic frame of mind ... There, as I turned my head, hovering over the next building no more than 100 feet away was this thing with electric light bulbs flashing on and off round the bottom, one non-blinking red light on top. I was completely sober. The thing I noticed was that there was no noise ..."

May Pang:

"As I walked out to the terrace, my eye caught this large, circular object coming toward us. It was shaped like a flattened cone, and on top was a large, brilliant red light, not pulsating like on any of the aircraft we'd see heading for a landing at Newark (Airport). When it came a little closer, we could see a row or circle of white lights that ran around the entire rim of the craft - these were also flashing on and off. There were so many of these lights it was dazzling to the mind. It was, I estimate, about the size of a two-man Lear jet and it was so close that if we had something to throw at it, we probably would have hit it quite easily."

Too stunned to move, the couple stood transfixed as they stared at the unusual hovering craft. Lennon called the New York City Police Department, as did at least 7 others to report the same sighting. According to Pang, Lennon spent the rest of the evening wandering around the apartment in a daze, murmuring, "I can't believe it ... I can't believe it ... I've seen a flying saucer ..."

He drew several pictures of what he had seen, and included one in the cover art for his Walls And Bridges album.

Israeli Archaeologists Find 1,000-Year-Old Intact Chicken Egg

A team of archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has found an unbroken chicken egg in an Islamic-period cesspit at the archaeological site of Yavne on Israel’s southern Mediterranean coast.

Poultry farming was introduced to Israel approximately 2,300 years ago, during the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods.

“Eggshell fragments are known from earlier periods, for example in the City of David and at Caesarea and Apollonia, but due to the eggs’ fragile shells, hardly any whole chicken eggs have been preserved. Even at the global level, this is an extremely rare find,” said IAA archaeologist Dr. Lee Perry Gal.

“In archaeological digs, we occasionally find ancient ostrich eggs, whose thicker shells preserve them intact, but even today, eggs rarely survive for long in supermarket cartons,” added Gal's pal, IAA archeologist Dr. Alla Nagorsky.

This past Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, UFO and paranormal researcher Timothy Green Beckley passed on. He was a colorful character who stood out in a field full of colorful characters, and while he might not have been the most serious of researchers, he was part of a circle of legendary characters from the days of flying saucers that included James Moseley, Gray Barker, and John Keel. Records of Beckley’s age at the time of his passing range from 65 to 69. According to the IMDb, he was born on March 4, 1952 as Jeremy Stone. In addition to his interest in the paranormal, he was an actor in and producer of soft-core porn/horror movies and was known to fans as “Mr. Creepo.” He wrote and published many books on the paranormal with a definite sensationalized bent and was active in the community up until his death.

“Tim Beckley had so many careers that even his own girlfriend didn’t know what he did for a living… Timothy Green Beckley has been described as the Hunter Thompson of UFOlogy by the editor of UFO magazine Nancy Birnes.”

His bio contains the claims that his life was saved by an invisible force at the age of three, he started having out of body experiences at the age of six, he had his first UFO sighting at age ten, and had two more after that in the course of his life.

With Beckley’s passing, UFOlogy has lost one of the last of those researcher/enthusiasts, such as Barker and Moseley, who walked on both sides of the line between researcher and sensationalist entertainer while maintaining a sense of humor. He may not have been the most rigorous of investigators, but he was certainly one of the most enthusiastic.

Regulus is a Royal Star

Regulus is considered to be one of the four Royal Stars of ancient Persia. These Royal Stars mark the four quadrants of the heavens. They are Regulus, Antares, Fomalhaut, and Aldebaran. Regulus is the only bright star to reside almost squarely on the ecliptic, that is, Earth’s orbital plane projected onto the sphere of stars.

Necromantieum | Oracle of the Dead

Exploring the Underworld & Polygonal Walls of Ancient Greece

The Necromanteion was an ancient temple dedicated to the god of the Underworld, Hades, and his consort, the goddess Persephone, built entirely of beautifully crafted Peru-like polygonal and cyclopean walls inside and out. It was an entryway to the underworld, and a place where the ghosts of the dead could - under special circumstances - reveal the future to the living. It was the place that Homer sent Odysseus to seek advice from a long-dead oracle, and where he was horrified by visions of Hades, and it also appears in a sordid chapter of Herodotus’ Histories.

Visitors wishing to communicate with the dead would have entered the dark chamber and followed specific rituals outlined for the protection from and communication with the dead which would have taken several days. These visions were enhanced by the special diet recommended in the days before entering the sanctuary, which included hallucinogenic beans and lupin seeds. Interestingly, inside the underground chambers, archaeologists have found mechanical contrivances which may have been used to enhance the appearance of the animated dead.

After a session with the dead, pilgrims were forbidden to talk about what they learned for fear of Hades claiming their own lives in exchange.

Should the natural beauty of our night sky be protected under law, or should it be free and open for anyone to use as they see fit? That is a question many have grappled with for the past two years, since the arrival of so-called mega constellations. These vast groups of satellites number in the thousands, exemplified by California-based SpaceX’s Starlink network, which is designed to provide global Internet coverage from space—at the potential cost of despoiling the heavens as its orbiting components reflect sunlight to the ground. By some estimates, in the coming years, thousands of these satellites could be visible in the night sky at any given hour. Now a U.S. court may be on the cusp of ruling on the issue for the first time. One way or the other, that decision could have ramifications across the satellite industry, astronomy and our very culture itself. And depending on the outcome, it might well be contested in the Supreme Court.

IBEX Produces 3D Map of Heliosphere

Astronomers using NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) satellite have mapped the boundary of the heliosphere, the vast region of space surrounding the Solar System that is filled with the solar wind.

The Earth-orbiting IBEX satellite detects particles that come from the heliosheath, the boundary layer between the Solar System and interstellar space. Dr. Dan Reisenfeld from Los Alamos National Laboratory and colleagues used IBEX data to map the edge of this zone — a region called the heliopause.

Here, the solar wind, which pushes out toward interstellar space, collides with the interstellar wind, which pushes in towards the Sun.

To do this measurement, the researchers used a technique similar to how bats use sonar. “Just as bats send out sonar pulses in every direction and use the return signal to create a mental map of their surroundings, we used the Sun’s solar wind, which goes out in all directions, to create a map of the heliosphere,” Dr. Reisenfeld said.

"NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula, is a about 25 light-years across blown by winds from its central, bright, massive star. The oxygen atoms produce the blue-green hue that seems to enshroud the detailed folds and filaments. Visible within the nebula, NGC 6888's central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136). The star is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years. The nebula's complex structures are likely the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Found in the nebula rich constellation Cygnus, NGC 6888 is about 5,000 light-years away, which is quite a way. See you in class!"
