In 1969 Neil Armstrong announced a safe touchdown on the moon with the words 'The Eagle has Landed'. "Eagle" was the name of the Lunar Module, the spacecraft which carried Neil and Buzz to the surface of the moon. After they walked on the surface of the moon they flew the Eagle back into orbit, docked with the Columbia command module and undocked the Eagle, leaving it in orbit while Columbia returned to Earth. Most spacecraft in lunar orbit suffer from instability in their orbits due to the 'lumpy' nature of the lunar gravity which tends to cause the orbits to eventually get so elliptical that they hit the moon. However, an amateur space fan wanted to narrow down the possible impact location and used orbit modelling software to propagate the orbit forwards in time ...

The Isle of Man’s rich Viking legacy has been further enhanced by the discovery of the Island’s latest treasure hoard, which was today declared Treasure by the Isle of Man Coroner of Inquests, Mrs Jayne Hughes.

The latest hoard consists of 87 silver coins, 13 pieces of cut, silver arm-rings or “hack silver” and associated artefacts. It was discovered in April by metal detectorist and ex-police officer Kath Giles whilst metal detecting on private land. The discovery marks the third major treasure inquest on the island in less than six months and is Kath’s fourth significant discovery since taking up metal detecting only three years ago.

Dr Kristin Bornholdt-Collins, an independent researcher and numismatist based in New Hampshire, USA, has confirmed that the hoard includes pennies minted in Dublin, England, modern day Germany and the Isle of Man itself, and said:

“The Northern Mixed hoard is the fourth Viking-Age coin hoard to be found in the Isle of Man in the last fifty years. It may have been added to over time, like a piggybank, accounting for some of the older coins, though for the most part it is a direct reflection of what was circulating in and around Man in the late 1020s/c. 1030."

It’s been just over 24 hours since Amazon founder and Blue Origin CEO Jeff Bezos took off on his rocket.

It was a fleeting moment in space, or at least somewhere near it, giving Bezos the opportunity to look back down at the surface below and ponder just how much humanity has messed with the natural beauty of our once pristine planet.

That’s an environmental toll, it’s worth noting, that Bezos has personally contributed to greatly. Amazon’s race to the bottom when it comes to carbon emissions has added considerably to our climate change problem (and let’s not forget about its many attacks on workers’ rights). From single-day shipping to wasteful packaging, the billionaire has made fortunes at a great cost to sustainable business practices and the natural environment.

In 2019 alone, his e-retail empire’s carbon footprint rose 15 percent, despite launching several environment initiatives. In 2020, the year of COVID-19, pandemic-fueled revenues hiked the company’s carbon emissions by another 19 percent year-over year.

All of which make his comments after his adventure even more egregious. His great Eureka moment: why don’t we take all the stuff that’s bad for the environment and send it to space?

Planetary formation is a complicated, multilayered process. Even with the influx of data on exoplanets, there are still only two known planets that are not yet fully formed. Known as PDS 70b and PDS 70c, the two planets, which were originally found by the Very Large Telescope, are some of the best objects we have to flesh out our planetary formation models. And now, one of them has been confirmed to have a moon-forming disk around it.

Moon formation is even less well understood than planetary formation at this point. Even the origins of our own Moon are still up for debate ...

We can describe what’s happening overall without getting bogged down in the complicated interactions between every atom and electron.

So when a new theoretical state of matter was discovered whose microscopic features stubbornly persist at all scales, many physicists refused to believe in its existence.

Fractons are quasiparticles — particle-like entities that emerge out of complicated interactions between many elementary particles inside a material. But fractons are bizarre even compared to other exotic quasiparticles, because they are totally immobile or able to move only in a limited way. There’s nothing in their environment that stops fractons from moving; rather it’s an inherent property of theirs.

“When I first heard about fractons, I said there’s no way this could be true, because it completely defies my prejudice of how systems behave,” said Nathan Seiberg, a theoretical physicist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. “But I was wrong. I realized I had been living in denial.”

The constellation Scutum has an unusual history. The Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius named it Scutum Sobiescianum, meaning the shield of Sobieski, in 1683. He named it for Jan III Sobieski, a Polish king who led his armies to victory in the Battle of Vienna.

Massive COCONUTS Exoplanet Discovery: Giant Planet Just 35 Light Years From Earth

Astronomers have discovered thousands of exoplanets — planets beyond our solar system — but few have been directly imaged, because they are extremely difficult to see with existing telescopes. A University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy (IfA) graduate student, Zhoujian Zhang, has beaten the odds and discovered a directly imaged exoplanet, and it’s the closest one to Earth ever found, at a distance of only 35 light years.

Using the COol Companions ON Ultrawide orbiTS (COCONUTS) online survey, Zhang and a team of astronomers identified a planet about six times the mass of Jupiter. The team’s research, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, led to the discovery of the low-temperature gas-giant planet orbiting a low-mass red dwarf star. They dubbed the new planetary system COCONUTS-2, and the new planet COCONUTS-2b.

“With a massive planet on a super-wide-separation orbit, and with a very cool central star, COCONUTS-2 represents a very different planetary system than our own solar system,” Zhang explained.

Flint, Michigan's Mark Farner is best known as the guitarist and songwriter for Grand Funk Railroad. Farner, a born-again Christian, claims to have seen UFOs on more than one occasion. He described a dramatic sighting he witnessed with family and friends, later confirmed by a neighbor, on Art Bell's Coast to Coast radio program.

The first one I saw, it was the most up close and real, it was only a hundred yards from us. I say us, because when I pulled into the driveway, Warren Keith, our keyboard player who ended up playing with Hank Williams Jr, was driving his Cadillac. We pulled in at my folks' house to stop and sleep ... it was 3 o'clock in the morning when we got there. So I go and I'm climbing through the window, the screen door was locked, my mother would leave a sliding window open ... and I'm crawling through and I'm about halfway in and halfway out, and I hear Warren giving this war whoop out in the driveway.

I just bust my ass, I run to the porch and he's standing there, he's dropped his satchel, and he's staring at this field across the street. It was a full moon, and as soon as I broke into the moonlight I look and here is this flying saucer, and I mean this thing had to be about 200 feet in diameter, it was HUGE. It was in like a haze, it had some twinkling lights in the middle of it, kind of like how the sun hits a diamond.

I dove through the window, hollering at the top of my lungs, 'Get out of bed! Get out on the front porch RIGHT NOW!' And so all my brothers and sisters, my mom and my stepdad get out on the porch, and here this thing is ... not making a sound, not making a motion or anything, and it was like, dang, is this thing real? Is this being projected into the atmosphere? What is this? And we were all in awe standing there ... I didn't think of taking a picture ... I'm just thinking, What the hell is going on here? It was that close."

Both the Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids meteor streams peak around the 29./30. July around. In addition, the first Perseids can already be seen. The latter reach around the 12./13. August its peak and then up to 100 shooting stars per hour are possible. Today's recordings were taken on the Weser beach in Sandstedt in Lower Saxony.

Researchers Use Acoustic Levitation to Create a “Tractor Beam” of Sound

In science fiction, the ability to move an object without coming into physical contact with it is a common theme. Using a tractor beam to manipulate other beings or objects are abilities that don’t exist in the modern world. At least, not yet.

Now a group of researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University have developed a way to use sound waves to manipulate objects without actually coming into contact with them. Termed “acoustical trapping,” it is a promising breakthrough that offers tantalizing opportunities for researchers across an entire range of scientific disciplines. At this time, the team believes the method can only move the smallest of objects.

“Sound waves may be applied to a wider range of object sizes and materials, so much so that successful manipulation is possible for millimeter-sized particles,” the press release states. “Though they haven’t been around for as long as their optical counterparts, acoustic levitation and manipulation show exceptional promise for both lab settings and beyond.”

Nauka Module Mishap

The new Russian research module Nauka successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) late last week (July 29). But Nauka accidentally fired its thrusters, sending the space station into a spin. ISS briefly lost what pilots and engineers call attitude control. At first, NASA said on Twitter that ISS had tilted about 45 degrees. Later, it became clear the situation was more severe than NASA had initially reported. A NASA official told the New York Times on August 2:

"That’s been a little incorrectly reported."

That statement came from Zebulon Scoville, the flight director who led NASA’s Mission Control center in Houston, Texas, during the July 29 tumbling event.

All’s Well That Ends Well

NASA held a news conference following the dramatic event to discuss what happened. According to Scoville, the ISS reached a maximum rotation rate of 0.56 degrees per second. The crew members on board, space station manager Joel Montalbano said, were never in any immediate danger during any time of the lost altitude control.

Mars Perseverance Rover Hopes For Ground-Breaking Event

Almost six months into its mission, the Mars rover Perseverance has at last begun operations for its ground-breaking ceremony. Early this morning NASA’s latest emissary to the Red Planet drilled into a rock, looking for human's first physical evidence from Mars to return to Earth.

At least, that was the intention. Initial images sent back to mission control showed that a drill hole had been created, and telemetry suggested that after the sample was seemingly extracted from the rock, it was processed within the rover according to plan. Some at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California began to publicly celebrate the rover’s apparent success.

But the most recent data and imagery sent by Perseverance indicates that no rock was collected during the drilling—and the mission team are scrambling to find out what went wrong. At this point, the leading theory is that the rock behaved in an unexpected way, as opposed to the rover itself suffering from a mechanical failure.

This seemingly small act of geologic thievery was supposed to mark the beginning of the Mars Sample Return campaign, a multiagency, multimission effort that aims to bring that tube—and many more—back to Earth, giving scientists their first pristine specimens from our neighboring world ...

The habitat will simulate the challenges of a mission on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failure, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. Crew tasks may include simulated spacewalks, scientific research, use of virtual reality and robotic controls, and exchanging communications. The ancient inscription was found inside a storage pit at Khirbat er-Ra‘I, an archaeological site some 3 km northwest of Tel Lachish in Israel. It was written in ink on a jug, a small personal pottery vessel that holds approximately one liter, and may well have contained oil, perfume, or medicine. It contains the letters yod (broken at the top), resh, bet, ayin, and lamed, remnants of other letters, and is thought to spell 'Jerubbaal'.

“The name ‘Jerubbaal’ is familiar from Biblical tradition in the Book of Judges as an alternative name for the judge Gideon ben Yoash,” said Professor Yossef Garfinkel from the Institute of Archaeology at the Hebrew University and Dr. Saar Ganor from the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Inscriptions from the period of the Judges are extremely rare and almost unparalleled in Israeli archaeology.

The first artwork in space is considered to be "Fallen Astronaut", a small aluminum sculpture of a collapsed astronaut in a spacesuit made in 1971 by Belgian artist Paul van Hoeydonck.

The result of an agreement between the artist and American astronaut David Scott, the three-inch tall sculpture was transported to the surface of the moon by the crew of the Apollo 15 space mission in 1971. Installed next to a plaque listing the names of the fourteen American and Soviet astronauts who had died during the age of space exploration, the sculpture serves as a monument to early cosmic pioneers.

An understanding of numbers is often viewed as a distinctly human faculty — a hallmark of our intelligence that, along with language, sets us apart from all other animals.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Honeybees count landmarks when navigating toward sources of nectar. Lionesses tally the number of roars they hear from an intruding pride before deciding whether to attack or retreat. Some ants keep track of their steps; some spiders keep track of how many prey are caught in their web. One species of frog bases its entire mating ritual on number: If a male calls out — a whining pew followed by a brief pulsing note called a chuck — his rival responds by placing two chucks at the end of his own call. The first frog then responds with three, the other with four, and so on up to around six, when they run out of breath.

Now, researchers are uncovering increasingly more complex numerical abilities in their animal subjects. Many species have displayed a capacity for abstraction that extends to performing simple arithmetic, while a select few have even demonstrated a grasp of the quantitative concept of “zero” — an idea so paradoxical that very young children sometimes struggle with it. In fact, experiments have shown that both monkeys and honeybees know how to treat zero as a numerosity, placing it on a mental number line much as they would numerosity one or two ...

The Strange Story of the “Alien Interview” Footage

In 1997, a documentary called "Area 51: The Alien Interview" was released by the small film company Rocket Pictures. The title might strike many as like something off of a tabloid article, but it starts off very seriously and right away pulls the viewer in. There is an immediately familiar face in the doc, that of actor Steven Williams, who played Fox Mulder’s informant from the second season of The X-Files, and his serious expression, urgent tone, and the suitably desolate New Mexico highway he is standing on lets the viewer know this program means business.

The video shows a gloomy interrogation room containing a metal table, at which sits the eerie visage of the bulbous pale head of what appears to be a grey alien in the right-center of frame, complete with large black eyes and slit-like mouth, bobbing about spookily in the dark as if it is having trouble keeping its head up, a spotlight always trained on its outlandish face. The alien is claimed to have been captured when his craft crashed in 1989, and has supposedly been held captive ever since. The validity and source of this tape is unknown to this day ...

The FAA Finally Admits Documented Reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena

With the arrival of an eagerly awaited preliminary assessment on unidentified aerial phenomena by the Navy’s UAP Task Force in June, opinions on its findings were mixed and varied. While many hopeful proponents of such speculations on the origin of UAP were likely irritated by the report’s ambiguous tone, the document did reveal a few notable surprises.

“The UAPTF is currently working to acquire additional reporting,” one portion of the report reads, “including from the U.S. Air Force (USAF), and has begun receiving data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).”

The inclusion of the FAA as a source for information about UAP within the document was notable, especially because in years past, the agency tasked with regulating all civil aviation in the United States has seemed to want no involvement of any sort with unidentified flying objects.

According to its own procedural publications cited above, the FAA appears to direct air traffic operators to report instances involving UAP (or UFOs, as the agency’s documentation still calls them) to civilian organizations like the Washington-based National UFO Reporting Center. These publications appear to provide no procedural details related to an internal system for collecting such data within the agency.

The fact that the FAA “captures data related to UAP” had not been the only pertinent information about the agency’s involvement with UAP studies included in the June report. Additionally, its authors state that “the FAA continuously monitors its systems for anomalies, generating additional information that may be of use to the UAPTF. The FAA is able to isolate data of interest to the UAPTF and make it available.”

I looked in the book A Gift From the Stars: Extraterrestrial Contacts and Guide of Alien Races by Elena Danaan in an attempt to ID that alien race. On page 306 there's a list of eleven small Grey races with renderings: Ainanna, Airk, Akart, Anak, Do-Hu, Eben, Elfaff, Emerther, Moovianthan, Xrog Zeta & Solipsi Rai (Grays). It mostly resembles the Eben although the nose and mouth protrusion doesn't exactly match.

As a side note on page 308 there's a list of eleven tall Grey/Gray races with renderings: Eban, Elmanuk, Grail, Gravsli, Kiily-Tokurt, Matrax, Maytra, Orela, Smad, X5 & Indugutk.

Notice the one letter difference between the Eben & the Eban.

In 1905 Albert Einstein wrote four groundbreaking papers on quantum theory and relativity. It became known as Einstein’s annus mirabilis or wonderous year. One was on brownian motion, one earned him the Nobel prize in 1921, and one outlined the foundations of special relativity.

But it’s Einstein’s last 1905 paper that is the most unexpected. The paper is just two pages long, and it outlines how special relativity might explain a strange aspect of radioactive decay. As Marie Curie most famously demonstrated, some materials such as radium salts can emit particles with much more energy than is possible from simple chemistry. Einstein’s little paper speculated about the excess energy might be balanced by a loss of mass of the nuclear particles. This idea eventually led to Einstein’s most famous equation, E = mc2.

We now know this is exactly what happens in radioactive decay. The effect is also how stars create energy in their cores via nuclear fusion.

If you can convert matter entirely into energy, you should be able to do the reverse. It’s known as the Breit–Wheeler process and involves colliding two photons to create an electron-positron pair. While we have used light to create matter several times, converting two photons directly into matter is very difficult. But a recent experiment shows it can be done.

The team, led by physicist Jaroslav Adam, used data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and looked at more than 6,000 events that created electron-positron pairs. They didn’t simply beam two lasers at each other but instead used high-energy particle collisions to create intense bursts of photons. In some cases, these photons collided to create an electron-positron pair. From the data, they could show when a pair was created directly from light.

On the night of August 12th to 13th, the Perseids meteor shower reached its peak. Numerous falling stars sparkled in the starry sky. After it was completely cloudy shortly after sunset, I was lucky that the sky here became clear again from 1 a.m. and I could watch the Perseids in the starry sky.

"Spectacular explosions keep occurring in the binary star system named RS Ophiuchi. Every 20 years or so, the red giant star dumps enough hydrogen gas onto its companion white dwarf star to set off a brilliant thermonuclear explosion on the white dwarf's surface. At about 5,000 light years distant, the resulting nova explosions cause the RS Oph system to brighten up by a huge factor and become visible to the unaided eye. The red giant star is depicted on the right of the above drawing, while the white dwarf is at the center of the bright accretion disk on the left. As the stars orbit each other, a stream of gas moves from the giant star to the white dwarf. Astronomers speculate that at some time in the next 100,000 years, enough matter will have accumulated on the white dwarf to push it over the Chandrasekhar Limit, causing a much more powerful and final explosion known as a supernova. Back in August of 2017, Cassini stared at Enceladus for 14 hours, looking at the moon’s night side. The movie begins with a view of the part of the surface lit by reflected light from Saturn and transitions to completely unilluminated terrain. About halfway through the sequence, the exposure time of the images changes in order to make fainter features more visible as the light level drops.

Just 18 days after these observations of Enceladus, Cassini plunged into Saturn. This ‘self-sacrifice’ ensured that any potentially habitable moons of Saturn wouldn’t be contaminated sometime in the future if the drifting, unpowered spacecraft were to accidentally crash land there. Microbes from Earth might have adhered to Cassini, and its RTG power source was still generating some warmth. If not destroyed, it could melt through the icy crust of one of Saturn’s moons, possibly, and reach a subsurface ocean.

We all miss Cassini, but the spacecraft keeps on giving, even after its demise, as scientists continue to study the treasure trove of data it gathered during its years at Saturn.

Solar Explosion on the Sun - Update

NOAA analysts have determined that a CME launched by yesterday's explosion will sail east of the sun-Earth line, missing our planet. Another CME might still deliver a weak blow on Aug. 26-27. Overall, the chance of magnetic storms is less than before, but not zero.

Here Are Two Ways to Find the Andromeda Galaxy

Take a night to drive to a dark sky and find the glorious Andromeda galaxy. It’s the great spiral galaxy next door to our Milky Way and the most distant object you can see with your eye alone. It’s best seen in the evening at this time of year. Most people find the galaxy by star-hopping from the constellation Cassiopeia the Queen, a very noticeable M- or W-shaped pattern on the sky’s dome. You can also find the Andromeda galaxy by star-hopping from the star Alpheratz in the Great Square of Pegasus.
