Hot Spot Red Spot

The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is a vast storm that has been raging for at least 150 years, and new analysis shows that its winds are changing.

The storm is an anticyclone big enough to swallow our entire planet, with massive, crimson-coloured clouds spinning in an anticlockwise direction. The winds raging on the outer edge are more than twice as intense as a Category 5 cyclone on Earth, while the winds within the storm are cruising around more slowly. Now, a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research has found that the outer winds have sped up.

By analysing images taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope from 2009 to 2020, researchers found that the average wind speed just within the boundaries of the Great Red Spot, set off by the outer green circle, have increased by up to 8% from 2009 to 2020 and exceed 640km/h.

In skylore and in Greek mythology, Cassiopeia was the beautiful and vain queen of Ethiopia. It is said that she committed the sin of pride by boasting that both she and her daughter, Andromeda, were more beautiful than the Nereids, or sea nymphs. Pridefulness, in mythology, is never wise.

Her boast angered Poseidon, god of the sea, who sent a sea monster (Cetus the Whale) to ravage the kingdom. To pacify the monster, Cassiopeia’s daughter, Princess Andromeda, was left tied to a rock by the sea. Cetus was about to devour her when Perseus the Hero happened by on Pegasus, the Flying Horse.

Perseus rescued the princess, and the gods were pleased, so all of these characters were elevated to the heavens as stars.

It Happened Again – UFO Passing Fighter Jets in England

This is the second time within three weeks that a high-speed UFO passing fighter jets during an air show. On August 28, 2021, during an international air show in Thamesford, Ontario, Canada, a fast UFO flew past the Blue Angels and now on September 19, 2021, a similar incident occurred when the Red Arrows performed an air show in Chorley, England. As with the UFO in Canada, this UFO in England also has no wings or visible propulsion.

I'm too far south in latitude to see Cassiopeia, Andromeda maybe as I think my location's cut off is somewhere in between.. but it's on the list for sure! And I hope to see so many more of the prominent features in the northern night sky. This strong affinity we humans have with the cosmos ( it's the same for all people right?..surely ) stretching back to antiquity, where we get these colourful stories or half truths, boggles the mind. For me it truly feels like home calling, especially hearing sounds the CMB (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_microwave_background).

And in equal extraordinary measure is.. well.. the measure of it all. I love to nerd out on numbers and no better place than to flex than outer space.. these kinds of videos, where perspective is established to reveal distances and sizes of objects out there are all very common but something about this one really drives it home for me, literally. Maybe because I've done a lot of country road / long distance driving and have a good grasp of doing a few hundred miles or kilometers. Oh and of course I eat my peas so I know about those too. lol.... ok, here's the video and you'll see what I'm blabbering on about.

BepiColombo Gets First Glimpse of Mercury

The European-Japanese BepiColombo spacecraft swept past Mercury on Friday, 1 October, in the first of six high-speed flybys to gradually set up the probe’s trajectory for a critical manoeuvre in 2025 to enter orbit around the Solar System’s innermost planet. Since its launch on an Ariane 5 rocket in 2018, BepiColombo has completed a slingshot manoeuvre around Earth and two flybys of Venus to bend its orbit around the Sun closer to Mercury. The encounter with Mercury was the first time BepiColombo visited its ultimate destination, but scientists will have to wait four more years for a full examination of the scorchingly hot planet.

The flyby provided scientists the first up-close views of Mercury since NASA's MESSENGER mission ended in 2015.

“The flyby was flawless from the spacecraft point of view, and it’s incredible to finally see our target planet,” said Elsa Montagnon, ESA’s BepiColombo spacecraft operations manager.

Gorgeous spiral galaxy M33 seems to have more than its fair share of glowing hydrogen gas. A prominent member of the local group of galaxies, M33 is also known as the Triangulum Galaxy and lies a mere 3 million light-years away. Sprawling along loose spiral arms that wind toward the core, M33's giant HII regions are some of the largest known stellar nurseries, sites of the formation of short-lived but very massive stars. Intense ultraviolet radiation from the luminous massive stars ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas and ultimately produces the characteristic red glow. To highlight the HII regions in this telescopic image, broadband data used to produce a color view of the galaxy were combined with narrowband data recorded through a hydrogen-alpha filter, transmitting the light of the strongest hydrogen emission line. Close-ups of cataloged HII regions appear in the sidebar insets. Use the individual reference number to find their location within the Triangulum Galaxy. For example, giant HII region NGC604 is identified in an inset on the right and appears at position number 15. That's about 4 o'clock from galaxy center in this portrait of M33.

Posing as a brilliant evening star, Venus lies near the western horizon in this southern hemisphere, early spring, night skyscape. To create the composite view exposures tracking the sky and fixed for the foreground were taken on September 25 from Cascavel in southern Brazil. In view after sunset, Venus appears immersed in a cone of zodiacal light, sunlight scattered from dust along the Solar System's ecliptic plane. In fact from either hemisphere of planet Earth, zodiacal light is most visible after sunset near a spring equinox, (or before sunrise near an autumn equinox) when its luminous arc lies at steep angles to the horizon. Extending above the sunset on this night, the zodiacal light reaches toward rich starfields and immense interstellar dust clouds in the bulge of the central Milky Way. Follow along the Milky Way from the central bulge back toward the horizon and you'll spot the closest star system to the Sun, Alpha Centauri, a mere 4.37 light-years away.

New Study Declares Michigan’s Mackinac Island Most Haunted Town in America

In a study conducted by Porch.com with help from data collected by Shadowlands Haunted Places Index, they have detailed where the most haunted locations in America are situated and you may be surprised with the results. Additionally, they used data from the U.S. Census Bureau in order to calculate the estimated number of haunted locations for every 100,000 citizens.

According to the study, there are at least 11,418 locations in the entire United States that are said to be haunted by ghosts. Interestingly, only 1 out of 10 haunted locations are residential homes. Surprisingly, 20% of all haunted locations are educational establishments like schools (11%) and colleges/universities (9%). Graveyards/cemeteries make up 8% of the hauntings, while hotels/motels/inns are next on the list at 6%.

If you live in Kentucky, you may want to buy some ghost hunting equipment as there are 79 haunted locations for every million residents (Nebraska and Oklahoma are the next highest). As for large cities, Savannah, Georgia tops the list at 14.6 haunted sites per 100,000 residents (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Laredo, Texas, came in second and third on the list).

In regards to small towns, Mackinac Island, Michigan towers over the other towns with a whopping 3,347 haunted sites per 100,000 people. For comparison, Cape May, New Jersey, is in second place with 382 paranormally active sites. The study even went a step further and calculated that there are 16 haunted locations per 478 residents on Mackinac Island.

Footage of 'Spherical' UFO Captured on a Galaxy S21 • #shorts

While working on our catamaran, near the East coast of the US on May 16, 2021, we noticed a strange illuminated 'spherical' object hovering over us. I recorded the object with my Galaxy S21 phone taking video and pictures. The footage does not show the detail as well as in person, but you may be able to see there is a dark circle or spot in the center of the object. It seemed to rise above and drop below the clouds in relatively the same spot for hours. We have never seen a UFO before, so I checked online and found similar UFO videos like "Radar confirms UFO swarm around Navy warship" and "New Video Raises More UFO Questions Ahead of Pentagon Report Release" mentioning an increase in "Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon" sightings and encounters and believe the Navy footage is very similar to the object we witnessed and recorded.

Where do the dark streams of dust in the Orion Nebula originate? This part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, M43, is the often imaged but rarely mentioned neighbor of the more famous M42. M42, seen in part to the upper right, includes many bright stars from the Trapezium star cluster. M43 is itself a star forming region that displays intricately-laced streams of dark dust -- although it is really composed mostly of glowing hydrogen gas. The entire Orion field is located about 1600 light years away. Opaque to visible light, the picturesque dark dust is created in the outer atmosphere of massive cool stars and expelled by strong outer winds of protons and electrons.

In ancient Rome, brothels were somewhat of a staple, particularly in vacation cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum. These staples eventually grew to encourage their own form of coinage, called spintriae in the Medieval period. The prevalence of prostitution in Roman culture is highlighted through the wide circulation of these coins, and the plethora of imagery in the aforementioned sites in southern Italy.

One of the most prominent theories about the creation and purpose of the coins was to advertise the prices of sexual acts. Further, in passing a coin between two people—i.e., the buyer and the “seller”—one could maintain a level of privacy. This would have been particularly important to those of high status who did not want their late night dalliances known. It is believed by some scholars that “the sex act depicted on each coin corresponds to the price listed on the opposite face,” which has also been considered clever as it is “a system that would also have helped dissolve language barriers”.

Poor old Jupiter. It's just hanging out there, being a gas giant, shepherding trojans, minding its own business, and boom. Smacked upside the head by a stray space rock.

What is unusual is that someone happens to be looking and filming at just the right time - and this month, that happened, with sky-watchers around the globe catching an explosion in the planet's upper atmosphere. On 13 September 2021, at 22:39 UT, amateur astronomers recorded the bright flash of what appeared to be a Jupiter impact - namely Harald Paleske from Germany, who was recording the shadow of Io as it passed in front of the planet, and José Luis Pereira from Brazil.

On March 1, 1639, John Winthrop opened his diary in which he recorded the trials and triumphs of his fellow Puritans as they made a new life in America. As the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony put pen to paper, he began to recount a most unusual event that had recently caused a stir among the English immigrants.

Winthrop wrote that earlier in the year James Everell, “a sober, discreet man,” and two others had been rowing a boat in the Muddy River, which flowed through swampland and emptied into a tidal basin in the Charles River, when they saw a great light in the night sky. “When it stood still, it flamed up, and was about three yards square,” the governor reported, “when it ran, it was contracted into the figure of a swine.”

Over the course of two to three hours, the boatmen said that the mysterious light “ran as swift as an arrow” darting back and forth between them and the village of Charlestown, a distance of approximately two miles. “Diverse other credible persons saw the same light, after, about the same place,” Winthrop added.

Most people go to bed expecting to find the same person/pet/pillow or empty space next to them that was there when they fell asleep – anything else would be cause for alarm. A woman in British Columbia awoke last week to find something no one on Earth has ever found in bed with them before … and lived to tell about it. Meet Ruth Hamilton, the woman who woke up next to a space rock.

A relief to find out the rock on your pillow where your head should have been was a meteor and not debris from a construction site? That’s what Ruth Hamilton said after she first called the police to come look at the rock on her bed and the hole in her roof.

Witnesses in Calgary and Nelson, British Columbia, reported sightings of a "shooting star" to The Daily Hive, while the International Meteor Organization’s website had nearly a dozen reports from the Alberta area.

Hamilton plans to keep the space rock as a souvenir, at least until her insurance company figures out if the roof repairs due to meteor strike are covered.

This pretty starfield spans about three full moons (1.5 degrees) across the heroic northern constellation of Perseus. It holds the famous pair of open star clusters, h and Chi Persei. Also cataloged as NGC 869 (top) and NGC 884, both clusters are about 7,000 light-years away and contain stars much younger and hotter than the Sun. Separated by only a few hundred light-years, the clusters are both 13 million years young based on the ages of their individual stars, evidence that they were likely a product of the same star-forming region. Always a rewarding sight in binoculars, the Double Cluster is even visible to the unaided eye from dark locations. But a shroud of guitar strings was used to produce diffraction spikes on the colorful stars imaged in this vibrant telescopic view.

What makes a meteor a fireball? First of all, everyone agrees that a fireball is an exceptionally bright meteor. Past that, the International Astronomical Union defines a fireball as a meteor brighter than apparent magnitude -4, which corresponds (roughly) to being brighter than any planet -- as well as bright enough to cast a human-noticeable shadow. Pictured, an astrophotographer taking a long-duration sky image captured by accident the brightest meteor he had ever seen. Clearly a fireball, the disintegrating space-rock created a trail so bright it turned night into day for about two seconds earlier this month. The fireball has been artificially dimmed in the featured image to bring up foreground Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. Although fireballs are rare, many people have been lucky enough to see them. If you see a fireball, you can report it. If more than one person recorded an image, the fireball might be traceable back to the Solar System body from which it was ejected.

It will slowly subside once the solar storm hits Earth. Until then, expect high-latitude communications and GPS reception to be slightly impacted.

The name Delphinus means dolphin in Latin. But it was a Greek astronomer – Ptolemy of Alexandria in the second century CE – who first cataloged these stars. In Greek mythology, Delphinus represents the dolphin sent by the sea god Poseidon to fetch Amphitrite, a goddess of the sea and one of the fabled Nereids. It’s said Poseidon chose Amphitrite from among her sisters as they performed a dance on the isle of Naxos. The dolphin carried Amphitrite to Poseidon, and she became his wife. He rewarded the dolphin by making it a constellation.

In another story, Delphinus saves the Greek poet Arion when he is attacked by robbers on a ship. They were about to kill Arion, but he begged permission to sing a final song. His captors agreed, and the poet stood on the deck of the ship and sang a dirge accompanied by his lyre. He then threw himself overboard. A dolphin who’d heard his song and been charmed by the music saved him.

Once you’re familiar with the Summer Triangle, you can use it to star-hop to several nearby small constellations.

The first telephone call via space was made August 13, 1960, between Holmdel, New Jersey, and Goldstone, California. Two hours earlier recorded messages had been transmitted with greetings from President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson. "It may look like a huge cosmic question mark, but the big question really is how does the bright gas and dark dust tell this nebula's history of star formation. At the edge of a giant molecular cloud toward the northern constellation Cepheus, the glowing star forming region NGC 7822 lies about 3,000 light-years away. Within the nebula, bright edges and dark shapes stand out in this colorful and detailed skyscape. The 9-panel mosaic, taken over 28 nights with a small telescope in Texas, includes data from narrowband filters, mapping emission from atomic oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur into blue, green, and red hues. The emission line and color combination has become well-known as the Hubble palette. The atomic emission is powered by energetic radiation from the central hot stars. Their powerful winds and radiation sculpt and erode the denser pillar shapes and clear out a characteristic cavity light-years across the center of the natal cloud. Stars could still be forming inside the pillars by gravitational collapse but as the pillars are eroded away, any forming stars will ultimately be cut off from their reservoir of star stuff. Weird Radio Waves From the Heart of the Milky Way

Radio emission is common in the universe. They’re generated by everything from planets and stars – exotic objects like pulsars and black holes – galaxies – and, of course, human technology. This week (October 12, 2021), astronomers said they’ve detected new and unusual radio wave signals, unlike any found before. The radio waves are coming from the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

Astronomers discovered the variable signals using the ASKAP radio telescope in Australia. The behavior of the radio emission doesn’t fit the pattern of any known source of radio signals. It might be a new kind of stellar object, or something else entirely.

Ziteng Wang in the School of Physics at The University of Sydney led the international team of astronomers from Australia, Germany, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Spain and France who observed the signals. They published their peer-reviewed paper about the intriguing discovery in The Astrophysical Journal on October 12. The source of the signals has been dubbed ASKAP J173608.2-321635, but astronomers don’t know what the source actually is.

"The brightness of the object […] varies dramatically, by a factor of 100, and the signal switches on and off apparently at random. We’ve never seen anything like it," said Wang.

Scientists Create Most Detailed Map of Uranus' Mysterious Auroras to Date

Scientists have imaged the whole globe of Uranus in the infrared part of the light spectrum for the first time, hoping to shed light on the planet's mysterious auroras and weird magnetic field.

The British-led team did so during a three-day campaign that was livestreamed publicly last week for the whole world to see. The scientists, based at the University of Leicester in the U.K., used NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) in Hawaii to look at the odd ice giant that orbits the sun 19 times farther away than Earth does.

Just like on Earth, auroras on Uranus are triggered by the interaction of the solar wind, the stream of charged particles emanating from the sun, with the planet's magnetic field. But because so much is different about Uranus compared to our planet, these auroras behave very differently than the Earth's famous northern and southern polar lights.

Previously, the surface of Uranus has only been imaged in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. NASA's mission Voyager 2 swung past the planet briefly in 1986, taking the first and so far only set of up-close images of the strange planet's surface and the environment around. In 2011, the Hubble Space Telescope for the first time detected auroras glimmering above the surface of Uranus, each covering an area larger than Earth.

"It is just incredibly spine tingling to look through this and see the microscopic world that Darwin would have seen in the 1820s and 30s," said Christie's head of Scientific Instruments, Globes & Natural History, James Hyslop.

The microscope has been valued at around £250,000–350,000 ($343,050–480,270).

Deneb Kaitos is the brightest star in the constellation Cetus the Whale (or Sea-Monster). In star names, the word deneb usually means tail. And so it is with this star. It marks the tail of Cetus. Deneb Kaitos is also known by two alternate names, Beta Ceti and Diphda. It shines at magnitude 2, making it about as bright as Polaris the North Star. Neither Polaris nor Deneb Kaitos shines brightly enough to be super noticeable. But both are well within the limit of visibility to the unaided eye. Based on parallax measurements, Deneb Kaitos lies at an estimated distance of 96 light-years from Earth.

Deneb Kaitos reaches its highest in the sky on October and November evenings every year. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it appears in the southern sky. It’s closer to overhead as seen from Earth’s Southern Hemisphere.

The stars return to the same place in the sky about two hours earlier with each passing month (or four minutes earlier with each passing day). In middle January, look for Deneb Kaitos to reach its high point around 7 p.m. local time. On February evenings, this star drifts into the southwest sky, and disappears from the evening sky by March.

It’s easy to locate Deneb Kaitos if you’re familiar with the Great Square of Pegasus. Locate the star by drawing an imaginary line through 2 stars in the Square: Alpheratz and Algenib. Deneb Kaitos isn’t super bright, but it’s in a part of the sky filled with even-fainter stars.

Blown by fast winds from a hot, massive star, this cosmic bubble is huge. Cataloged as Sharpless 2-308 it lies some 5,000 light-years away toward the constellation of the Big Dog (Canis Major) and covers slightly more of the sky than a Full Moon. That corresponds to a diameter of 60 light-years at its estimated distance. The massive star that created the bubble, a Wolf-Rayet star, is the bright one near the center of the nebula. Wolf-Rayet stars have over 20 times the mass of the Sun and are thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova phase of massive star evolution. Fast winds from this Wolf-Rayet star create the bubble-shaped nebula as they sweep up slower moving material from an earlier phase of evolution. The windblown nebula has an age of about 70,000 years. Relatively faint emission captured by narrowband filters in the deep image is dominated by the glow of ionized oxygen atoms mapped to a blue hue. Presenting a mostly harmless outline, SH2-308 is also known as The Dolphin-head Nebula.

Oldest Ghost Drawing Discovered on Babylonian Exorcism Tablet

British Museum curator Irving Finkel, from the museum's Middle East department, has discovered the oldest-known ghost drawing on a 3,500-year-old ancient Babylonian tablet that also includes instructions on how to exorcise the unwanted spirit.

The drawing on a clay tablet depicts a seemingly grumpy, bearded male ghost being led to the underworld on a rope by a woman. A ritual engraved alongside the sketch explains that the solution for removing pesky male ghosts is to give them a lover.

The tablet is small enough to fit in one hand, and at least half of it is missing. Upon closer inspection, Finkel found the fine drawing, which is barely visible to the naked eye, and he identified the ghost and woman. The image serves as a visual aid to the ritual, which would have been performed by an exorcist.

The ritual instructs the reader to make figurines of a man and a woman, and equip them with specific items, including travel provisions for the man and furniture for the woman. The figurines are then to be buried together at sunrise while the exorcist recites a spell. The spell on the tablet is incomplete, but it begins by calling the sun god Shamash, who was responsible for the movement of ghosts to the underworld.

"These characters suddenly walked out of a myth," Finkel said. "It was very exciting."

If you've always wanted to discover a planet for your very own, now's your chance. Researchers are calling on the public for help in identifying exoplanets – planets orbiting stars outside of our own Solar System.

The Planet Hunters Next-Generation Transit Search (NGTS), run by an international group of astronomers, has five years' worth of digital footage that needs sifting through. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to spot stars that briefly dim, perhaps suggesting a planet is passing in front of them.

That's known as a transit by the experts, but you don't need any experience to get involved in trying to spot one. All you need is a keen eye and some patience to sift through the images collected by the NGTS telescopes based at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Today the 26-year-old mechanic and self-confessed space nerd was popping in and out of the workshop to answer calls from interested journalists and scientists eager to speak with him about what he found. His boss has allowed him the time to appear on national television and speak to the media, as long as he makes some progress on the line of cars awaiting repair.

"To be published alongside people that went to university for years and years and for me, just a mechanic from Darwin, to have my name on it, I think it's pretty amazing," he said. "The nerd side of me is just ecstatic."

Der Meteorschauer der Orioniden erreicht in der Nacht vom 21. auf den 22. seinen Höhepunkt. Leider fällt er in diesem Jahr auf einen Tag nach Vollmond. Was bedeutet, dass das helle Mondlicht die meisten Meteore überstrahlt und wir nur einen Bruchteil der möglichen Sternschnuppen sehen. Neben dem hellen Mondlicht störte bei mir auch immer wieder aufziehende Wolken die Beobachtung, so dass ich nur wenige Meteore zu sehen bekam. Das Gute an den Orioniden ist aber, dass sie ein relativ breiten Höhepunkt haben und so sind die Chancen weitere Sternschnuppen zu sehen zu bekommen in den kommenden Nächten auch relativ gut.

The Orionids' meteor shower reaches its peak on the night of the 21st to the 22nd. Unfortunately this year it falls on the day after the full moon. Which means that the bright moonlight outshines most of the meteors and we only see a fraction of the possible falling stars. In addition to the bright moonlight, I was also constantly disturbed by the rising clouds, so that I only saw a few meteors. The good thing about the Orionids, however, is that they have a relatively broad peak and so the chances of seeing more falling stars in the coming nights are also relatively good.

In der Nacht vom 8. auf den 9. Oktober erreichte der Draconiden Meteorschauer seinen Höhepunkt. Im Schnitt kann man dann ca. 5 - 10 Sternschnuppen pro Stunde sehen. Ich konnte rund 30 Sternschnuppen mit meiner Kamera filmen. Es wird sich dabei aber wahrscheinlich nicht nur um Draconiden gehandelt haben. In der zweiten Nachthälfte zog leider Nebel auf und die Beobachtungsbedingungen hatten sich stark verschlechtert. Insgesamt war ich aber doch sehr zufrieden mit dem was ich zusehen bekommen habe.

On the night of October 8th to 9th, the Draconid meteor shower reached its peak. On average you can see about 5 - 10 falling stars per hour. I was able to film around 30 falling stars with my camera. But it probably wasn't just about Draconids. In the second half of the night, unfortunately, fog came up and the observation conditions had deteriorated significantly. Overall, however, I was very satisfied with what I saw.

This wouldn't surprise me as I firmly believe the Ancient Egyptians visited down under too. There's an Egyptian exhibit at my city's museum and among the artifacts is boomerangs, a famous hunting tool used by Australian Aboriginals. Also some of the gold found in burial sites in Egypt has the same signature as that mined from parts of Australia.

As far as ghosts go, Mirach's Ghost isn't really that scary. Mirach's Ghost is just a faint, fuzzy galaxy, well known to astronomers, that happens to be seen nearly along the line-of-sight to Mirach, a bright star. Centered in this star field, Mirach is also called Beta Andromedae. About 200 light-years distant, Mirach is a red giant star, cooler than the Sun but much larger and so intrinsically much brighter than our parent star. In most telescopic views, glare and diffraction spikes tend to hide things that lie near Mirach and make the faint, fuzzy galaxy look like a ghostly internal reflection of the almost overwhelming starlight. Still, appearing in this sharp image just above and to the right of Mirach, Mirach's Ghost is cataloged as galaxy NGC 404 and is estimated to be some 10 million light-years away.

Do you see the bat? It haunts this cosmic close-up of the eastern Veil Nebula. The Veil Nebula itself is a large supernova remnant, the expanding debris cloud from the death explosion of a massive star. While the Veil is roughly circular in shape and covers nearly 3 degrees on the sky toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus), NGC 6995, known informally as the Bat Nebula, spans only 1/2 degree, about the apparent size of the Moon. That translates to 12 light-years at the Veil's estimated distance, a reassuring 1,400 light-years from planet Earth. In the composite of image data recorded through narrow band filters, emission from hydrogen atoms in the remnant is shown in red with strong emission from oxygen atoms shown in hues of blue. Of course, in the western part of the Veil lies another seasonal apparition: the Witch's Broom Nebula.

Fireball Over Central Spain (Oct 21) ~ Bola de fuego Sobre Segovia y Ávila (21 de Oct)

This stunning bolide was recorded over Spain on 2021 October 21, at 1:16h local time (which is equivalent to 23:16 universal time on October 20). It was produced by a fragment (a meteoroid) from a comet. This fragment impacted the atmosphere at about 237.000 km/h. The fireball began at a height of about 137 km over the northeast of the province of Segovia, and ended at an altitude of around 75 km over the north of the province of Ávila.

Pegasus the Winged Horse Dominates Autumn Skies

On autumn evenings in the Northern Hemisphere – spring evenings in the Southern Hemisphere – Pegasus is ascending in the east in the evening hours. You’ll most easily notice the giant, square-shaped asterism within Pegasus, called the Great Square.

Pegasus the Winged Horse is the 7th-largest of the 88 constellations. It rises in the east on autumn evenings in the Northern Hemisphere (spring evenings in the Southern Hemisphere). And it dominates the sky with its giant, square-shaped asterism, called the Great Square. In mythology, Pegasus was the winged horse that Perseus the Hero rode when he saved princess Andromeda from Cetus the Whale. These four constellations all group together in the sky now, illustrating stories told in ancient Greece some 3,000 years ago.

Pegasus is easy to find. On fall evenings in the Northern Hemisphere, it climbs above the eastern horizon, reaching a spot nearly overhead by late fall. Its asterism – the Great Square of Pegasus – is huge.

The Asterism of the Great Square

The Great Square of Pegasus can also look like a huge diamond. Think of it as a giant baseball diamond rising during playoffs month in the east after dark. Asterisms, such as the Great Square, are groups of stars that haven’t been labeled as constellations but are easy to recognize.

Using Pegasus to Find the Andromeda Galaxy

Pegasus’s close location to the constellation Andromeda also means that it’s a useful way to star-hop to the Andromeda Galaxy. You’ll need a dark-sky site to track down Andromeda without optical aid. It’s much easier to spot with binoculars or a telescope.
