What Are These Unknown Flying Objects?


There are many unknown objects flying through our skies and people are increasingly wondering what these objects could be, like an unknown dark rectangular shaped object about 300-400 feet in the air over Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, obvious no balloon or kite since there was no wind or the illuminated disk and cigar shaped objects captured over San Antonio, Texas, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Conyers, Georgia, yet a bright unknown light moving fast from west to east in northern sky as well as a strange line of 3 lights moving very fast at high altitude over North Vancouver, captured in night vision British Columbia, Canada.

Uranus at Opposition November 4

In 2021, the 7th planet Uranus reaches opposition on November 4-5 (November 5 at 0 UTC). The planet is theoretically visible to the eye alone, but requires a dark sky to be seen. In 2021, the Head of the Whale in the constellation Cetus – 5 stars in a pentagon – is near Uranus on the sky’s dome. The most noticeable object in this region of sky is the Pleiades star cluster. The Whale’s Head is to the right (south).

Uranus will be located near the Head of the Whale in the constellation Cetus. Menkar is the Whale’s brightest star. Look directly across from Menkar in the Whale’s Head to find Mu Ceti. Use the Whale to Star-hop to Uranus

While Uranus is tough to spot with your eyes alone, it’s easy to view with binoculars. That is, assuming you know exactly where to look. Uranus is difficult to distinguish from a faint background star. You probably need a telescope to pick out its disk shape (remember, only stars are pinpoints). But binoculars should enhance its color; it shines with greenish-blue hue.

Your best bet is to find a good sky chart and then star-hop from the 4.2-magnitude star Mu Ceti. Mu Ceti is a star in Cetus the Whale that is just across the border with Aries and Uranus.

Uranus is in Aries in 2020 and 2021, tracing out a path near the circle that marks the head of Cetus. Around opposition, Uranus will be closest to the star Mu Ceti.

British vocalist and songwriter Morrissey, formerly of The Smiths, has always followed his own muse both on and off the stage. According to author Johnny Logan, he had an unusual experience in the early 90's.



On the evening of Sunday 9 March, Morrissey and a friend witnessed a fleet of flying saucers traveling across the sky in a hexagonal formation. The sighting lasted almost a full 10 minutes and rendered him speechless. For days afterward he felt inexplicably strange whenever he recalled the incident. The eerie encounter left him firmly convinced that the government was covering up the truth about UFOs.

Gaines waged a number of battles with the Comics Code Authority in an attempt to keep his magazines free from censorship. In one particular example noted by comics historian Digby Diehl, Gaines threatened Judge Charles Murphy, the Comics Code Administrator, with a lawsuit when Murphy ordered EC to alter the science-fiction story "Judgment Day", in Incredible Science Fiction #33 (Feb. 1956). The story, by writer Al Feldstein and artist Joe Orlando, was a reprint from the pre-Code Weird Fantasy #18 (April 1953), inserted when the Code Authority had rejected an initial, original story, "An Eye For an Eye", drawn by Angelo Torres, but was itself also "objected to" because of "the central character being Black". ... Murphy demanded, without any authority in the Code, that the Black astronaut had to be removed.

This really made 'em go bananas in the Code czar's office. 'Judge Murphy was off his nut. He was really out to get us', recalls [EC editor] Feldstein. 'I went in there with this story and Murphy says, "It can't be a Black man". But ... but that's the whole point of the story!' Feldstein sputtered. When Murphy continued to insist that the Black man had to go, Feldstein put it on the line. 'Listen', he told Murphy, 'you've been riding us and making it impossible to put out anything at all because you guys just want us out of business'. [Feldstein] reported the results of his audience with the czar to Gaines, who was furious [and] immediately picked up the phone and called Murphy. 'This is ridiculous!' he bellowed. 'I'm going to call a press conference on this. You have no grounds, no basis, to do this. I'll sue you'. Murphy made what he surely thought was a gracious concession. 'All right. Just take off the beads of sweat'. At that, Gaines and Feldstein both went ballistic. 'Fůck you!' they shouted into the telephone in unison. Murphy hung up on them, but the story ran in its original form.

The Horsehead Nebula is one of the most famous nebulae on the sky. It is visible as the dark indentation to the orange emission nebula at the far right of the featured picture. The horse-head feature is dark because it is really an opaque dust cloud that lies in front of the bright emission nebula. Like clouds in Earth's atmosphere, this cosmic cloud has assumed a recognizable shape by chance. After many thousands of years, the internal motions of the cloud will surely alter its appearance. The emission nebula's orange color is caused by electrons recombining with protons to form hydrogen atoms. Toward the lower left of the image is the Flame Nebula, an orange-tinged nebula that also contains intricate filaments of dark dust. Two prominent reflection nebulas are visible: round IC 432 on the far left, and blue NGC 2023 just to the lower left of the Horsehead nebula. Each glows primarily by reflecting the light of their central star.

The Big Bang teaches us that our expanding, cooling universe used to be younger, denser, and hotter in the past. However, extrapolating all the way back to a singularity leads to predictions that disagree with what we observe.

In every direction we care to observe, we find stars, galaxies, clouds of gas and dust, tenuous plasmas, and radiation spanning the gamut of wavelengths: from radio to infrared to visible light to gamma rays. No matter where or how we look at the universe, it’s full of matter and energy absolutely everywhere and at all times. And yet, it’s only natural to assume that it all came from somewhere. If you want to know the answer to the biggest question of all — the question of our cosmic origins — you have to pose the question to the universe itself, and listen to what it tells you.

Today, the universe as we see it is expanding, rarifying (getting less dense), and cooling. Although it’s tempting to simply extrapolate forward in time, when things will be even larger, less dense, and cooler, the laws of physics allow us to extrapolate backward just as easily. Long ago, the universe was smaller, denser, and hotter. How far back can we take this extrapolation? Mathematically, it’s tempting to go as far as possible: all the way back to infinitesimal sizes and infinite densities and temperatures, or what we know as a singularity. This idea, of a singular beginning to space, time, and the universe, was long known as the Big Bang.

But physically, when we looked closely enough, we found that the universe told a different story. Here’s how we know the Big Bang isn’t the beginning of the universe anymore ...

But in an inflationary scenario (yellow), we never reach a singularity, where space goes to a singular state; instead, it can only get arbitrarily small in the past, while time continues to go backwards forever. Of all the private organizations devoted to UFO investigation, the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) was arguably the most ambitious and tenacious.

This was driven in large part by its director, Donald Keyhoe. Keyhoe held the beliefs that UFOs are extraterrestrial and that the U.S. Government, particularly the Air Force, was keeping information from the public that could possibly prove the ET hypothesis. As effective as NICAP was at hounding the Air Force and convincing many in the U.S. Congress that UFOs were deserving of scientific study, there are indications that the CIA was involved in both the beginning and the end of the organization.

Todd Zechel wrote about the CIA – NICAP connection in the January 1979 issue of Just Cause, the newsletter put out by Citizens Against UFO Secrecy.

NICAP was incorporated in 1956, and two men Zechel argues were covert CIA operatives were put into chair positions within the organization. One of these men was Bernard J. O. Carvalho, who was made the chairman of NICAP’s membership subcommittee According to Zechel, Carvalho worked as a “front man” for companies secretly run by the CIA. The other was “Count” Nicolas de Rochefort, who was made Vice-Chairman of NICAP. According to Zechel, de Rochefort worked with the CIA’s Psychological Warfare Staff. Zechel tells the reader “there is more than ample evidence to conclusively establish both de Rochefort and Cavalho were at least during certain periods of their lives covert employees of the Central Intelligence Agency.”

Sometime after I became the NICAP Assistant Director during the Summer of 1967, Stuart Nixon, a cocky young man, came to NICAP as a new staff member. (Keyhoe later told me that Nixon had been hired as “a favor” to “a friend.” As he continued, I got the idea that the friend may have been Colonel Joseph Bryan, Chairman of NICAP’s Board of Governors.)

During his first week at work, Stuart approached my desk and, with a somewhat stumbling aura of authority, announced: “Gordon, I am here to coordinate some changes that will need to be made.” Suddenly, he drew back, as if he had said too much.

“What changes are you talking about, Stuart?” I asked. “Who sent you here?”

“Oh, never mind,” he nervously replied. “Sorry…. I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m just here to help you guys through the rough times.”

A red flag had been sent up. Shortly after that, Stuart told me that the NICAP photographer, William (“Bill”) MacIntyre—who had also mysteriously come into the picture at about the same time as Nixon—had been shot down in his helicopter in Vietnam in 1965. He was supposedly on a secret mission with the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.), Stuart openly remarked with some degree of admiring glee.

It didn’t take me long to wonder if Nixon may have been sent there to recruit me for a possible C.I.A. takeover of NICAP. I had heard from Dick Hall that two of the agency’s operatives had visited the NICAP office before I came on board and spent several hours scrutinizing the sighting reports. I soon realized that Don Keyhoe himself may have opened the door for that eventuality by appointing Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter, the first Director of the C.I.A., Chairman of the NICAP Board of Governors. The Admiral and Keyhoe had been friends since their days long ago as cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Other board members—including Colonel Joseph Bryan and Dewey Fournet—had also been C.I.A. operatives. They were among the many contacts Keyhoe had established in the military, the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies. They would serve him well in obtaining UFO reports he could use in his books and at NICAP. I was also beginning to realize that this infiltration would serve them well if they really had the goal of taking over control of the world’s largest UFO organization.

Why would you want to fake a universe? For one reason -- to better understand our real universe. Many astronomical projects seeking to learn properties of our universe now start with a robotic telescope taking sequential images of the night sky. Next, sophisticated computer algorithms crunch these digital images to find stars and galaxies and measure their properties. To calibrate these algorithms, it is useful to test them on fake images from a fake universe to see if the algorithms can correctly deduce purposely imprinted properties. The featured mosaic of fake images was created to specifically mimic the images that have appeared on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Only one image of the 225 images is real -- can you find it? The accomplished deceptors have made available individual fake APOD images that can be displayed by accessing their ThisIsNotAnAPOD webpage or Twitter feed. More useful for calibrating and understanding our distant universe, however, are fake galaxies -- a sampling of which can be seen at their ThisIsNotAGalaxy webpage.

The space rock was a cosmic visitor that no one expected. An asteroid about the size of a refrigerator shot past Earth last week, and astronomers didn't know the object existed until hours after it was gone.

It was a close call (from a cosmic perspective) — the space rock's trajectory on Oct. 24 carried it over Antarctica within 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometers) of Earth — closer than some satellites — making it the third-closest asteroid to approach the planet without actually hitting it, CNET reported. Scientists were unaware of the object, dubbed Asteroid 2021 UA1, because it approached Earth's daytime side from the direction of the sun, so the comparatively dim and small visitor went undetected until about 4 hours after passing by at its closest point, according to CNET.

To some it looks like a cat's eye. To others, perhaps like a giant cosmic conch shell. It is actually one of brightest and most highly detailed planetary nebula known, composed of gas expelled in the brief yet glorious phase near the end of life of a Sun-like star. This nebula's dying central star may have produced the outer circular concentric shells by shrugging off outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. The formation of the beautiful, complex-yet-symmetric inner structures, however, is not well understood. The featured image is a composite of a digitally sharpened Hubble Space Telescope image with X-ray light captured by the orbiting Chandra Observatory. The exquisite floating space statue spans over half a light-year across. Of course, gazing into this Cat's Eye, humanity may well be seeing the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5 billion years.

They own all the important land. They own, and control the corporations. They've long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want.

Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests. That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting f-cked by a system that threw them overboard thirty f-cking years ago. They don’t want that.

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly sh-ttier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your f-cking retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this f-cking place. It’s a big club and you ain’t in it. You and I are not in The Big Club.

By the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table has tilted, folks. The game is rigged. And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care.

Good honest hard-working people – white collar, blue collar, it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue – these are people of modest means – continue to elect these rich cocksuckers who don’t give a f-ck about you. They don’t give a f-ck about you. The world is warming at an "extraordinary" pace unlike anything seen over the past 24,000 years, according to a new study that has amassed hundreds of temperature records from around the globe to map past climate change. Reconstructing past temperatures from marine sediments dating back to the peak of the last ice age, the study reinforces – once again – humans have caused a shift in Earth's climate never before detected in the geological record.

"This reconstruction suggests that current temperatures are unprecedented in 24,000 years, and also suggests that the speed of human-caused global warming is faster than anything we've seen in that same time," says Jessica Tierney, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Arizona and co-author of the study. The findings underscore the latest report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released in August, which concluded that burning fossil fuels has heated the planet at a rate unprecedented in the past 2,000 years, such that human influence on Earth's climate is simply "unequivocal".

"The fact that we're today so far out of bounds of what we might consider normal is cause for alarm," adds lead author of the new paper, climate scientist Matthew Osman, also of the University of Arizona.

ISS Fires Booster Rockets to Avoid Collision with Exploded Satellite

The crew of the International Space Station (ISS) fired maneuvering rockets last week to avoid being struck by a chunk of a previously destroyed Chinese weather satellite. Smashed to bits by an anti-satellite missile test nearly fifteen years earlier, the piece of debris was projected to come close enough to the ISS that the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) and the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos (who coordinated the maneuver) decided to execute the move.

“More than 27,000 pieces of orbital debris, or “space junk,” are tracked by the Department of Defense’s global Space Surveillance Network (SSN) sensors,” the report explains. “Much more debris — too small to be tracked, but large enough to threaten human spaceflight and robotic missions — exists in the near-Earth space environment.”

In May of this year NASA released a report outlining the dangers faced from debris colliding with human spacecraft.
That same report explains how the bulk of that debris is traveling at or near orbit speed, which is around 17,500 miles per hour, meaning even a collision with a tiny fleck of paint can be deadly.

Perseus, the hero, came and rescued her, and they fell in love. Later, they got married.

Poseidon was still angry with Cassiopeia and wanted to punish her, so he placed her far into the sky, where she could gaze at her own reflection forever.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- SpaceX expanded its constellation of low Earth orbit satellites on Saturday with the launch of 53 Starlink satellites from Florida. A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 7:19 a.m. EST and deployed the satellites about 16 minutes after launch.

Starlink is a satellite-based global internet system that SpaceX has been building for years to bring internet access to underserved areas of the world.

Why Science Says "Every Breath You Take" by The Police is the Ultimate Song

Some songs will never go away, like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police.

The song was a sensation when it was released in 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 charts for eight weeks. And today it plays on — the soundtrack to parties, weddings or trips to the grocery store. Its popularity is a little surprising, though, because it's not a particularly flashy song. Its arrangement is flat and monochromatic, with a snaking guitar line, placid drums and Sting's faint and reverb-y vocals. The drummer on the recording, Stuart Copeland, was even said to be frustrated with having to rein in his playing for the song's simple arrangement.

So why has it lived on? Some new research might explain it. In a study published this week by The Royal Society, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark analyzed streaming data for nearly 4 million songs on Spotify to see if there was a pattern to the types of music we listen to over a 24-hour period.

"We found that we could categorize it into five distinct time blocks throughout the day," says lead researcher Ole Adrian Heggli.

Technically, the study concentrated on something called "diurnal fluctuations" and how the "rhythm of human life is governed by diurnal cycles." So what is a song with musical qualities that would allow it to drift through all five diurnal fluctuations? That would be "Every Breath You Take" by The Police.

"It's a very in-the-middle type of song," Heggli says. "It's a medium tempo. It's a bit groovy, but not too much groovy. It doesn't have any loud surprises. And it's all over just a very pleasant, perhaps even a bit bland song."

Are Zebras White With Black Stripes or Black With White Stripes?

Zebras are iconic for their distinctive coats, but have you ever wondered whether zebras are white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

The stunning black-and-white coloration of the zebra's hide stands out in stark contrast with the dry, brown-and-green, treeless grasslands and savannah woodlands of their home territories of East and southern Africa, according to the African Wildlife Foundation. 

These stripes are unique to each individual. There are three zebra species living today — the plains zebra (Equus quagga), the mountain zebra (E. zebra) and the Grevy's zebra (E. grevyi) — and each species has a different striping pattern. For some, the darker portions of their hide are black, whereas others have browner coloring, and some have stripes only on their bodies but not on their legs.

Although zebras have black skin, different developmental processes determine their fur color, just like a light-skinned person can have dark hair, said Tim Caro, a behavioral and evolutionary ecologist/conservation biologist at the University of California, Davis. In fact, zebras actually have more light-colored hair than dark — their bellies are usually light — so it may seem that zebras are white with black stripes.

But that's not the case.

The production of melanin from melanocytes is "prevented during the development of a white hair, but not of a black hair," Caro told Live Science in an email. In other words, for zebras, the animals' default state is to produce black hair, making them black with white stripes.

Something Weird Is Happening on the Dark Side of the Moon

When we look at the Moon, we only see its one side. The other lunar hemisphere, known as the far side, or the dark side of the Moon, is always hidden from us.

In 1969, the Apollo 10 astronauts heard something unusual on the far side of the Moon. Apollo 10 lost contact with the mission control and started receiving a mysterious radio signal. This signal could not be from the Earth because Apollo was on the far side of the Moon, and no one on the planet could see or contact them. The astronauts heard the spooky sounds for about an hour until they emerged to the side of the Moon facing the Earth. However, the astronauts did not report this to the mission control because they thought they would be grounded on mental health issues.

For more than four decades, people believed that the mission went according to the plan. There was nothing weird about it. Then, finally, the incident came to light when the recorded transcripts were declassified. Now the question that everyone wanted an answer to was: What was there on the Moon's far side? Was someone really trying to contact the astronauts? What was the source of the unusual sounds?

The goal is to study the consequences of microgravity environments during sleep cycles. Study participants must spend 59 days in a bed with 6 degrees of incline.

The requirements to participate are: being a man or woman between 24 and 55 years old, not having illnesses or being a smoker; between 1.53 and 1.90 meters tall, and speak German.

Haunted properties are so difficult to sell in China that people are earning money staying at the place for a night.

It can be almost impossible to sell a property in Asia after it was home to an ‘unnatural death’, but, thankfully, a group of intrepid freelancers in China will make sure the place is not haunted — for a price. In China, a small industry of “haunted house testers” has developed who are hired by property agents, owners or potential buyers. They are typically paid one yuan per minute, and make about 1,440 yuan (US$220) for a 24-hour stay.

One haunted house tester, a retired soldier surnamed Zhang, said he knew of over a dozen other people who were taking on the job.

“Some of my friends say it is an easy job; sleep for one night and get the money. They asked me for help to get into the gig, but most of them were afraid. My friends quit after their first time,” said Mr Zhang.

Activity remains subdued this week with only pockets of fast solar wind to bring sporadic aurora to high latitudes, nothing like the G3 show we saw a couple of weeks ago. Planet Orbiting 2 Stars Discovered by TESS

Astronomers announced this month (November 10, 2021) that the space-based TESS planet-hunter (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) has discovered its first exoplanet orbiting two stars. It is a gas giant planet, almost exactly the same size as our solar system’s biggest world, Jupiter, but about three times more massive. It's 818 light-years from Earth, which contrasts greatly to Jupiter’s distance of less than a light-hour.

The newly found planet is called TIC 172900988b. It orbits its dual host stars in only 200.5 Earth-days (Jupiter takes 12 Earth-years to orbit our sun once).

Of course, the discovery is significant to sci-fi fans, too. It is reminiscent of the classic (and thoroughly shocking, at the time) first view of Tatooine, the fictional planet with two suns first glimpsed in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Now, astronomers are finding real-life exoplanets that really do orbit two stars. They are known as circumbinary planets. So far, 14 circumbinary planetary systems have been discovered.

I was flying my Autel EVO drone across the Magnetic Hill Golf Course last July - 2020 and captured this Unidentified Flying Object as it was in-flight. This being the second UFO I video taped from a drone I was amazed just how similar they looked and the speed they were travelling. I had a golfer examine the clip and he said it certainly was not a golf ball due to it's speed and flight pattern so I guess it remains a UFO.

Beginning in October 1987, there was a UFO flap in Wytheville, Virginia. Thousands of people in the area reported seeing extraordinary things in the sky, but the most commonly told story that came out of the flap centers around a single witness who, it seems, was singled out for harassment by some unknown entity or organization. On October 7, 1987, reporter Danny Gordon (pictured) of radio station WYVE called the county sheriff, as he regularly did, to see if the sheriff had any news. The sheriff told him that three deputies, all ex-military, had reported seeing a UFO earlier that day. According to Gordon, the story was used as what he calls a “ha-ha” piece at the end of that day’s newscast.

Tucana is a small, dim constellation of the southern skies that is one of 12 created by Petrus Plancius in the late 16th-century, based upon the observations of Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman. The constellation is named after “the toucan” bird, and is a member of the “Southern Birds” group of constellations, together with Grus (“crane”), Pavo (“peacock”), and Phoenix. The brightest star in Tucana, Alpha Tucanae, is a binary system located 200 light years distant with an apparent visual magnitude of 2.86. This constellation is famous for being home to the Small Magellanic Cloud, the fuzzy patch in the sky that represents one of two relatively large dwarf galaxies orbiting our Milky Way.

What happens to a star when it strays too close to a monster black hole? Astronomers have wondered why some stars are ripped apart, while others manage to survive a close encounter with a lurking black hole, only a little worse for wear. To figure out the dynamics of such an event, scientists built a supercomputer simulation and tested it out on eight different types of stars. The stars were sent towards a virtual black hole, 1 million times the mass of the Sun.

What they found was surprising.

The stars they modeled ranged in size from about one-tenth to 10 times the Sun’s mass, all with varying densities. All the stars were sent to about 24 million miles away from the black hole at their closest.

The good news is that the Sun-like star survived its close approach (good news for us, anyway). The other stars that survived had 0.15, 0.3, and 0.7 solar masses. But the stars that were 0.4, 0.5, and 3, and 10 times the Sun’s mass were completely torn apart. But why the disparity?

The researchers realized it wasn’t the star’s size that made the difference for its survival. Instead, the difference between survival and destruction was dependent on the star’s internal density.

Supercomputer Simulations Test Star-Destroying Black Holes

Watch as eight stars skirt a black hole 1 million times the mass of the Sun in these supercomputer simulations. As they approach, all are stretched and deformed by the black hole’s gravity. Some are completely pulled apart into a long stream of gas, a cataclysmic phenomenon called a tidal disruption event. Others are only partially disrupted, retaining some of their mass and returning to their normal shape after their horrific encounter.

These simulations are the first to combine the physical effects of Einstein’s theory of general relativity with realistic stellar density models. The virtual stars range from about one tenth to 10 times the Sun’s mass.

Google Engineers Claim They Were Fired For Following 'Don’t Be Evil’ Policy

Three ex-Google employees claim that Google has a contractual obligation to abide by its well-known “don’t be evil” policy, and they are suing the company for allegedly terminating them for calling out Google’s “evil” doings, via NPR.

“Don’t be evil” has been a part of Google’s Code of Conduct since the early 2000s. The company changed this to 'Do the right thing' in 2019.

The former workers Sophie Waldman, Rebecca Rivers, and Paul Duke were fired — in addition to a fourth employee, Laurence Berland — in November 2019 for allegedly violating the company’s data security policies, however, they claim they didn’t leak any confidential information. Earlier this year, the acting head of the National Labor Relations Board said that Google “arguably violated” US labor laws by firing the three employees, alleging that Google terminated the employees in retaliation for their activism.

In the lawsuit filed in the state of California, the group accuses Google of partaking in “evil,” and subsequently punishing them for calling the company out on it. The lawsuit states that at the time Waldman, Rivers, and Duke were hired by Google, they all signed a contract that included the “don’t be evil” rule. So when the employees questioned and petitioned against Google’s controversial cloud computing contract with the Trump administration’s Customs and Border Patrol in 2019, they believed that they were in accordance with their contracts, citing the potential instances of human rights abuses at the border.

Judge Orders Google to Disclose Secret Anti-Union Documents

A National Labor Relations Board judge ruled that Google must “immediately” produce more than 70 subpoenaed documents related to a secret anti-union campaign, known as code name “Project Vivian,” that Google ran to crush a union drive at the company.

The files include internal communications and strategy documents created in conjunction with IRI Consultants, a "labor relations" firm that Google contracted to craft and amplify anti-union messaging at the company. The judge wrote that Google sought to withhold the documents in ongoing court proceedings related to the firing of three activist employees by improperly citing them as legally privileged communications with their attorneys.

The anti-union documents include “campaign materials prepared for distribution to employees, training materials for staff on how to campaign against unionization among persons they manage, anti-union messaging and message amplification advice for [Google], and updates on how the campaign is being viewed among employees and/or in various reports.”

The subpoena is part of an ongoing National Labor Relations Board hearing involving the three fired Google software engineers who filed unfair labor practice complaints alleging that Google illegally terminated them in 2019 for engaging in collective activity.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Extraordinary Spiral in LL Pegasi

What created the strange spiral structure on the upper left? No one is sure, although it is likely related to a star in a binary star system entering the planetary nebula phase, when its outer atmosphere is ejected. The huge spiral spans about a third of a light year across and, winding four or five complete turns, has a regularity that is without precedent. Given the expansion rate of the spiral gas, a new layer must appear about every 800 years, a close match to the time it takes for the two stars to orbit each other. The star system that created it is most commonly known as LL Pegasi, but also AFGL 3068 and IRAS 23166+1655.

While a leading hypothesis for the illumination is light reflected from nearby stars, exactly why the spiral glows is itself ... a mystery.

What Happens When You Remove Your Body Hair?

We’re all pretty invested in what our body hair looks like. But why exactly do we have body hair in the first place, and what happens when we remove it?

On average, we’re covered in about 5 million hair follicles. That’s around the same number as other non-human primates; ours just isn’t as visible because most of it is the short, soft ‘peach fuzz’ called ‘vellus hair’. Our fuzz has a job: it helps us regulate our temperature by helping our sweat evaporate. When we’re cold, miniscule muscles in our skin contract around those hairs and make them stand on end—that’s what goosebumps are.

The longer, coarser, more distinctive hair on our head, face, legs, and groin is called ‘terminal hair’. Terminal hair is what we tend to be more preoccupied with. It’s found in specific places for a reason. Your eyelashes and eyebrows keep sweat and debris out of your eyes (with the added bonus of helping us express ourselves and recognize each other). Terminal hair on the head, legs, chest, and other large surfaces also regulates our temperature, and may protect our skin from UV damage and prickly, pokey stuff in our environment.

However, these are just our best guesses as to WHY we have body hair in the places we do. For evolutionary biology, body hair is actually still something of an enigma.

Constellation Cepheus looks like a child's drawing of a house. It may be found by drawing a triangle between the familiar Little Dipper asterism, the W-shaped constellation Cassiopeia, and the cross-shaped constellation Cygnus the Swan (aka the Northern Cross). Inside that triangle, you’ll find a pentagon (five-sided figure) of stars. This pentagon is Cepheus.

"What causes a blue band to cross the Moon during a lunar eclipse? The blue band is real but usually quite hard to see. The featured HDR image of last week's lunar eclipse, however – taken from Yancheng, China – has been digitally processed to equalize the Moon's brightness and exaggerate the colors. The gray color of the bottom right is the Moon's natural color, directly illuminated by sunlight. The upper left part of the Moon is not directly lit by the Sun since it is being eclipsed – it in the Earth's shadow. It is faintly lit, though, by sunlight that has passed deep through Earth's atmosphere. This part of the Moon is red, and called a blood Moon for the same reason that Earth's sunsets are red: because air scatters away more blue light than red. The ancient arts of origami, the art of paper-folding, and kirigami, the art of paper-cutting, have gained popularity in recent years among researchers building mechanical metamaterials. Folding and cutting 2D thin-film materials transforms them into complex 3D structures and shapes with unique and programmable mechanical properties.

In Applied Physics Reviews, by AIP Publishing, researchers in the United States and China categorize origami- and kirigami-based mechanical metamaterials, artificially engineered materials with unusual mechanical properties, into six groups based on two different criteria.

“Origami and kirigami are, by nature, mechanical metamaterials, because their properties are mainly determined by how the crease patterns and/or cuts are made and just slightly depend on the material that folds the origami or kiragami,” said author Hanqing Jiang.

Russia Threatens Criminal Charges Against NASA Astronaut

The Russian space corporation, Roscosmos, said it has completed an investigation into a "hole" found in a Soyuz spacecraft when the vehicle was docked to the International Space Station in 2018.

Moreover, Roscosmos told the Russian publication RIA Novosti that it has sent the results of the investigation to law enforcement officials. "All results of the investigation regarding the hole in the habitation module of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft were transmitted to Law Enforcement officials," Roscosmos said. No further details were provided.

While no astronauts or cosmonauts were ultimately in danger, the August 2018 incident has been embarrassing for Russian space officials. At the time, a 2 mm breach was discovered in the orbital module of the Soyuz MS-09 vehicle docked with the International Space Station. Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev, European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst, and NASA's Serena Auñón-Chancellor had flown to the station inside this Soyuz in June.

Left unchecked, the small hole would have depressurized the station in about two weeks. However, cosmonauts were able to patch the hole with epoxy, and the Soyuz spacecraft safely flew Prokopyev, Gerst, and Auñón-Chancellor back to Earth at the scheduled end of their six-month mission.

Since then, the focus has been on what—or who—may have caused the hole. A micrometeoroid strike was soon ruled out. Some Russian media reported that the hole had been caused by a manufacturing or testing defect, and this seems to be the most plausible theory. At the same time, however, sources in the Russian government started baseless rumors that perhaps a disgruntled NASA astronaut had drilled the hole.

The Russian state news service, TASS, escalated the issue in April when it published accusations that Auñón-Chancellor had "an acute psychological crisis" after suffering an instance of deep vein thrombosis in space and drilled the hole in an attempt to expedite her return to Earth. NASA pushed back against those claims at the time.

Now, with the announcement that its investigation is complete, Russian officials have floated another theory. In the RIA Novosti article, translated for Ars by Rob Mitchell, the publication cites reports that Auñón-Chancellor may have drilled the hole "due to stress after an unsuccessful romantic relationship with another crew member."

NASA, again, strongly asserted that these attacks on Auñón-Chancellor are without merit. "These attacks are false and lack any credibility," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson told Ars. "I fully support Serena and stand behind all of our astronauts."

NASA has known, with certainty, that this account lacks validity since 2018. The agency's space station program, based in Houston, was able to immediately determine that pressures began falling on the space station in late August 2018. NASA also knew the precise locations of the US astronauts on board the station before the leak occurred—and at the moment it began. None of the US astronauts on the station were near the Russian segment where the Soyuz vehicle was docked. US officials shared this data with Russians at the time.

This latest provocation—NASA officials and the astronaut office are incensed by charges like these—come at a perilous time. After Russia's military shot down its own satellite as part of a test earlier this month, astronauts on board the space station had to shelter inside their spacecraft for more than two hours out of concern for debris. A spacewalk planned for Tuesday morning also had to be delayed at the last minute due to debris concerns, although it was not immediately clear that this was due to debris from the Cosmos 1408 collision on November 15.

Amazon's Dark Secret: It Has Failed to Protect Your Data

On September 26, 2018, a row of tech executives filed into a marble- and wood-paneled hearing room and sat down behind a row of tabletop microphones and tiny water bottles. They had all been called to testify before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on a dry subject—the safekeeping and privacy of customer data—that had recently been making large numbers of people mad as hell.

Committee chair John Thune, of South Dakota, gaveled the hearing to order, then began listing events from the past year that had shown how an economy built on data can go luridly wrong. It had been 12 months since the news broke that an eminently preventable breach at the credit agency Equifax had claimed the names, social security numbers, and other sensitive credentials of more than 145 million Americans. And it had been six months since Facebook was engulfed in scandal over Cambridge Analytica, a political intelligence firm that had managed to harvest private information from up to 87 million Facebook users for a seemingly Bond-villainesque psychographic scheme to help put Donald Trump in the White House.

Notably absent from the lineup was anyone from Facebook or Equifax, which had been grilled by Congress separately. So for the assembled execs, the hearing marked an opportunity to start lobbying for friendly regulations—and to assure Congress that, of course, their companies had the issue completely under control.

No executive at the hearing projected quite as much aloof confidence on this count as Andrew DeVore, the representative from Amazon, a company that rarely testifies before Congress. After the briefest of greetings, he began his opening remarks by quoting one of his company’s core maxims to the senators: “Amazon’s mission is to be Earth’s most customer-centric company.” It was a stock line, but it made the associate general counsel sound a bit like he was speaking as an emissary from a larger and more important planet.

DeVore, a former prosecutor with rugged features, made clear that what Amazon needed most from lawmakers was minimal interference.

At that very moment inside Amazon, the division charged with keeping customer data safe for the company’s retail operation was in a state of turmoil: understaffed, demoralized, worn down from frequent changes in leadership, and—by its own leaders’ accounts—severely handicapped in its ability to do its job. That year and the one before it, the team had been warning Amazon’s executives that the retailer’s information was at risk. And the company’s own practices were fanning the danger.

According to internal documents reviewed by Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting and WIRED, Amazon’s vast empire of customer data—its metastasizing record of what you search for, what you buy, what shows you watch, what pills you take, what you say to Alexa, and who’s at your front door—had become so sprawling, fragmented, and promiscuously shared within the company that the security division couldn’t even map all of it, much less adequately defend its borders.

By the time DeVore started testifying about Amazon’s long-standing commitment to privacy and security, the dangers that the security division had identified weren’t just theoretical. According to Reveal and WIRED’s findings, they were real, and they were pervasive. Across Amazon, some low-level employees were using their data privileges to snoop on the purchases of celebrities, while others were taking bribes to help shady sellers sabotage competitors’ businesses, doctor Amazon’s review system and sell knock-off products to unsuspecting customers. Millions of credit card numbers had sat in the wrong place on Amazon’s internal network for years, with the security team unable to establish definitively whether they’d been unduly accessed. And a program that allowed sellers to extract their own metrics had become a backdoor for third-party developers to amass Amazon customer data. In fact, not long before September’s hearing, Amazon had discovered that a Chinese data firm had been harvesting millions of customers’ information in a scheme reminiscent of Cambridge Analytica.

In 1973, there was a worldwide wave of UFO associated humanoid encounters.

One report that stands out came from the city of Vilvoorde in Belgium. It was investigated by the Societé Belge d’Etude des Phénomènes Spatiaux, and an article describing the reported encounter written by Jean-Luc Vertongen appears in the SOBEPS journal, Inforespace No. 18, 1974. It was translated by Gordon Creighton and included in Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 20, No. 6.

At around 2:00 a.m. one morning in mid-December 1973, a Mr. “V. M.” was moving through his darkened house using a flashlight so as not to wake his sleeping wife. He was headed towards the toilet in the yard next to his kitchen when he noticed a noise like a shovel hitting the ground and saw a green glow on the edge of one of the kitchen window curtains.

The witness went to the window, opened the curtains, and saw a creature in front of the wall on the other side of the yard. According to the witness’s description, the creature had a green glow about it from head to foot and was a little over one meter tall. It was wearing what looked like a space suit, and was waving a device that looked like a vacuum cleaner or metal detector over some brick pieces that the witness had piled up earlier. The glow came from the creature’s suit, which the witness described as looking like the metallic tinged polyester used for the upholstery on “buggy” type vehicles ...

The tiny bots are made from the skin cells of frogs, but they don't reproduce by mitosis or meiosis or any of the other ways cells divide and replicate in normal circumstances. Instead, they build more of themselves from raw materials — free-floating frog skin cells — creating multiple generations of nearly identical organisms. 

In action, the bots (dubbed "xenobots" by their inventors), even look like Pac-Man. They move in wild corkscrews and spirals, their open "mouths" scooping the free-floating skin cells into piles. The cells tend to adhere, or stick together, once put in contact with one another, so these piles gradually meld into new, spiraling xenobots. 

Though this self-replication is a fairly delicate process, so far possible only in a carefully controlled lab dish, researchers hope it offers new promise for biologically based robots.

Unboxing a New Crystal Skull

This Crystal Skull arrived today and I decided to unbox in a livestream on FB ... this is the unedited video as it happened ... She is named Ocean Queen and is Blue Apatite crystal ... she weighs 6lb 1oz and is 6.25 inches long, 4.5 tall and 3.75 wide. Absolute glow in the dark, bright blue ... stunning.

Astronomers Capture a Doomed Galaxy Plunging Into a Galactic Furnace

The denizens of the Fornax galaxy cluster populate this image from the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope, located in Chile at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), a Program of NSF’s NOIRLab. The irregular galaxy lurking in the bottom left corner of this Dark Energy Survey image is NGC 1427A, and its headlong plunge into the heart of the Fornax Cluster over millions of years will eventually result in the galaxy’s disruption.

The Fornax Cluster — which, as the name suggests, lies primarily in the constellation Fornax (the Furnace) — is a relatively nearby galaxy cluster, only about 60 million light-years from Earth. This means that it looms large in the night sky, stretching across an area more than 100 times larger than the full Moon. With over 600 member galaxies, the Fornax Cluster is the second “richest” (most populous) galaxy cluster within 100 million light-years of our galaxy (after the much larger Virgo Cluster).

Say Hello to Aries the Ram

Aries the Ram ranks 11th smallest out of the 12 zodiac constellations, and December is a great month to see it. It’s home to the Northern Fly asterism, and the planet Uranus is currently taking up residence within its borders.

Aries is not a particularly prominent constellation, so a dim or moonless night is most desirable. The three stars depicting the Ram’s bust – Hamal, Sheratan and Mesartim (actually a double star) – suddenly brighten in a dark sky, as if someone had turned up the dimmer switch.

Fortunately, the head of the Ram is fairly easy to locate. You’ll find it midway between the Pleiades star cluster to the east and the Great Square of Pegasus to the west. The Ram’s head is actually turned backward, as if admiring the Pleiades – or perhaps his own golden fleece.

In Greek mythology, Aries represents the supernatural Ram that was sent by Zeus to rescue the children of Athamus, the King of Thebes, from political intrigue. Phrixus and his sister Helle were about to meet their demise, but the flying Ram, which could both speak and reason, took them away in the nick of time.

The children held on tight as the Ram flew them away for the safety of Colchis, an ancient kingdom bordering the eastern shore of the Black Sea. Unfortunately, Helle fell into the sea and drowned before reaching their destination. Hellespont – the ancient name for the Dardanelles Strait near Istanbul, Turkey – marks the place of her death, named in her honor.

The Alien Ride That Took Two Women To The Stars

It was an alien ride that took two seasoned paranormal investigators to the stars, totally unscheduled. But for Pamela Nance and Ashleigh Field, this was not the first time they had been taken.
