LSI Researchers Accidentally Discover The World’s First Warp Bubble

In 1994, Mexican Mathematician Miguel Alcubierre proposed the first mathematically valid solution to the warp drive. More specifically, he outlined a spacecraft propulsion system previously only envisioned in science fiction that can traverse the cosmos above the speed of light without violating currently accepted laws of physics.

Warp drive pioneer and former NASA warp drive specialist Dr. Harold G “Sonny” White has reported the discovery of an actual, real-world “Warp Bubble.” And, according to White, this first of its kind breakthrough by his Limitless Space Institute (LSI) team, funded by DARPA, sets a new starting point for those trying to manufacture a full-sized, warp-capable spacecraft.

In an interview, White added that “our detailed numerical analysis of our custom Casimir cavities helped us identify a real and manufacturable nano/microstructure that is predicted to generate a negative vacuum energy density such that it would manifest a real nanoscale warp bubble, not an analog, but the real thing.” In other words, a warp bubble structure will manifest under these specific conditions. White cautioned that this does not mean we are near building a fully functioning warp drive, as much more science needs to be done.

US Defense Bill Will Allow Funding to Reverse Engineer UFO Technology

Most people in the U.S. have resigned themselves to believe that their representatives in Washington take their good old time passing bills – if they act on them at all. That doesn’t seem to be the case with UFOs … uh, UAPs. Last month, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York submitted an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act to establish an “Anomaly Surveillance and Resolution Office” to consolidate the collection and analysis of all military-related Unidentified Aerial Phenomena data into one group – the Anomaly Surveillance and Resolution Office.

However, before that amendment could be acted on, the U.S House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) (S. 1605), including some strong UAP provisions, on a roll call vote of 363-70, and sent the measure to the U.S. Senate where it is expected to pass this month. Why so fast? Could it be because this bill calls for funding to reverse-engineer UFOs? Does the military have something it needs to reverse-engineer right away?

“(Supervise development of a) science plan to develop and test, as practicable, scientific theories to account for characteristics and performance of unidentified aerial phenomena that exceed the known state of the art in science or technology, including in the areas of propulsion, aerodynamic control, signatures, structures, materials, sensors, countermeasures, weapons, electronics, and power generation” (and try) “to replicate any such advanced characteristics and performance; and provide the foundation for potential future investments to replicate any such advanced characteristics and technology.”

Reverse engineering.

Does this sound like there’s something going on that needs to be addressed quickly? Is this to reverse-engineer technology long rumored to have been in the possession of Harry Reid’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP)? Or does the Pentagon already have Tic Tac UFOs in its possession? Is this rapid approval of the bill about budget money, getting the reverse-engineering done quickly, keeping it secret, or all of the above? Why is Congress so adamant about getting this UFO/UAP funding approved?

NASA Scientists Consider the Health Risks of Space Travel

Humans aren't built to live in space, and being there can pose serious health risks. For space administrations like NASA, a major goal is to identify these risks and hopefully help lessen them.

That was a major theme during NASA’s Spaceflight for Everybody Virtual Symposium in November, a virtual symposium dedicated to discussing current knowledge and research efforts around the impact of spaceflight on human health. Each panelist emphasized that the health risks presented by space travel are complex and multifaceted and that all types of risks should be considered closely when planning future missions.

When discussing the risks presented by living in space and space travel, there are five main types, the scientists outlined in the presentation.

Two types of risk, radiation and altered gravity, come simply from being in space, they said. Research has shown that both can have major negative effects on the body, and even the brain. Others, like isolation and confinement as well as being in a hostile closed environment, encompass risks posed by the living situations that are necessary in space, including risks to both mental and physical health.

Then, there are the risks presented simply by being a long way from Earth. The farther humans get from the Earth, the riskier living in space becomes in almost every way.

Everything from fresh food to unexpired medication will be extremely difficult to make accessible with longer journeys farther away. On the International Space Station, astronauts aren’t too far from us, and we can routinely send supplies to the crews in orbit. But a mission to the moon or Mars would pose more problems.

It’s an extreme environment, with strong magnetic fields and high temperatures of more than one million degrees Celsius – mysteriously much hotter than Sun’s 5,500°C surface.

The probe spent five hours directly immersed in the corona’s plasma. The measurements it made will lead to new insights about the physics of the corona and how the solar wind forms there.

“This marks the achievement of the primary objective of the Parker mission and a new era for understanding the physics of the corona,” says Justin C. Kasper from the University of Michigan.

Ok wait a minute! How could the probe spend 5 hours in an area that is claimed to have temperatures more than a million degrees Celsius?

Or are they just writing extreme stuff to see if people are paying attention? Maybe checking how effective the boosters are working? ;)

Really though - are they able to find cold spots? If so, wouldn't that still be kind of risky to spend all that time and money and then *poof* ?

It can survive because it is travelling through the vacuum. Few particles to transfer heat to the craft. As long as the heat shield holds, that's the thing that protects the craft from the EM (electromagnetic) spectrum, it is in the shade of space, where it is actually very cold.

edit: Must be one heck of a heat shield though, to withstand such high temperatures. It probably is ablative (like the space shuttle tiles or the brake pads of a car) and the craft probably only has so much protection before it wears away. But I'm just guessing, don't keep up with this field anymore.

What's happened to that moon of Saturn? Nothing -- Saturn's moon Rhea is just partly hidden behind Saturn's rings. In 2010, the robotic Cassini spacecraft then orbiting Saturn took this narrow-angle view looking across the Solar System's most famous rings. Rings visible in the foreground include the thin F ring on the outside and the much wider A and B rings just interior to it. Although it seems to be hovering over the rings, Saturn's moon Janus is actually far behind them. Janus is one of Saturn's smaller moons and measures only about 180 kilometers across. Farther out from the camera is the heavily cratered Rhea, a much larger moon measuring 1,500 kilometers across. The top of Rhea is visible only through gaps in the rings. After more than a decade of exploration and discovery, the Cassini spacecraft ran low on fuel in 2017 and was directed to enter Saturn's atmosphere, where it surely melted.

"Went out for a smoke and took pictures of the front yard, as I see frequent UFO activity and like to record proof. I have seen many UFOs that were far off but this was the first time anything has come so close. The craft came from the tree line pulsing multicolored lights. It was like they were trying to memos a large aircraft; however, I worked on C-17s in the Air Force and know that this no aircraft. The most recent excavations at the settlement site focused on an archaeological layer dating from the Umm an-Nar (Mother of Fire) phase of the Bronze Age (3300-1200 BC). Several copper objects were found at the site, but more importantly, evidence of copper processing was also discovered. This means the settlement was involved in the lucrative copper trade.

Perhaps the most interesting discovery at the site was a stone board game marked with fields and cup holes, similar to the ancient games unearthed in India, Mesopotamia, and across the Eastern Mediterranean basin. In deep history, fireside games were initially played with shells, stones, sticks and bones. Board games were sometimes used for oracular and divinatory purposes. The newly discovered stone board game found in Oman showed considerable complexity.

Evidence of ancient board games has been unearthed in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Board games were often given as “valuable diplomatic gifts.” To own a board game was a powerful status symbol signifying wealth. Furthermore, archaeologists suspect geometric board layouts were deemed as magical, and this is why they are often found in tombs, because they were seen as important devices in the afterlife.

The ancient Egyptian board game Senet, which dates to the time of Hesy-Ra an ancient Egyptian high official during the early Third Dynasty of Egypt , is possibly the oldest board game on record.

The game of chess originated with the Indian game, Chaturanga, which was described in seventh century AD texts as a game simulating a battle between the four arms of the Indian army. The four sides battled on the board and the outcome of the game was influenced by conceptual factors like rain, and how these factors affected the battlefield.

Experts say the newly discovered board game in Oman is similar to the layout of Chaturanga / chess. Putting this particular game in context, it is thought that the early Bronze Age traders may have played a similar strategy game of some kind, perhaps as part of their meetings where they settled debts and discussed future trading plans and strategies.

In 2013, an airborne U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft captured a UAP on infrared video. It flew directly across the airport runway at Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The sighting was corroborated using radar data obtained from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) 84th Radar Evaluation Squadron (RADES) group. A notable characteristic of the object is its apparent tumbling as it moves through the air, which gives it a very non-aerodynamic appearance. This tumbling action ends prior to the object's entry into the water and as it moves through the water. The object also apparently accelerated while underwater. As can be seen in the video, the object splits into two parts shortly after entering the ocean and then briefly re-emerging. Frame by frame analysis ruled out the possibility of a reflection or of a second object emerging from the water.

The Orion Constellation is probably one of the most well known and easily recognizable constellations in the night sky, easily spotted even by those who are not star-struck. Also known as the hunter, he stands proudly in the sky with his belt of three stars in a line shining brightly.

Orion has 7 main stars and 10 stars with planets.

The brightest star in the constellation is Rigel, a blue supergiant, also known as Beta Orionis. Rigel is the 6th brightest star in the sky, with an apparent magnitude of 0.18. It is around 40,000 times brighter than our Sun. Rigel is a star system, made up of 3 stars. It marks the position of the left foot of the Hunter.

Also notable in Orion constellation stars is Betelgeuse, a red supergiant known as Alpha Orionis. Betelgeuse is the second brightest star in Orion and the 8th brightest star in the sky. This star is approximately 643 light-years away from the Earth, and marks the spot of the armpit of Orion’s raised arm.

Alicia Stoddart, 38, says she captured the magical moment on the doorbell cam after a mysterious 'flying' object triggered its sensors.

The 38-year-old is convinced she spotted a fluttering fairy while holidaying at her parent's caravan in Clacton, Essex, with her children. She says her kids Millie, 17, Layla, 11, and Danny, 9, believe it was "definitely" the mystical tooth nabber visiting them in the night last Sunday.

A Quiet Explosion on the Sun

Have you ever tried smashing a ball into a flat rectangle?

Walk into any school classroom and you will likely see a flat, rectangular map of the world sprawled across the wall. Generations of children have grown up learning that this projection is what Earth looks like. But does this flat map really reflect what our planet is like?

Though designed with the best of intentions — to provide a detailed and coherent projection of Earth — flat maps are far from accurate; some areas look far bigger than they really are, others appear much smaller, and distances between various land masses are misrepresented.

"Every world map is distorted in some respect," said Matthew Edney, a professor of geography and the history of cartography at the University of Southern Maine.

Despite the protestations of flat-Earthers, our home planet is not flat — it is technically an oblate spheroid — a sphere with a flattened top and bottom and a bulge along the equator. This has, since the dawn of mapping, presented a major problem for cartographers: How can a three-dimensional object be faultlessly represented in two dimensions?

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was a revelation half a millennium ago and remains the most widely used flat depiction of Earth, according to MapHover. This map was favored by navigators for centuries because it enabled them to plot courses in a straight line. In terms of precision, however, it leaves a lot to be desired.

To put this in context, Greenland and Africa appear to be similar in size on the Mercator projection, when in reality Africa is nearly 14 times larger, according to Scientific American. Similarly, Alaska is represented as being around three times bigger than Mexico, when in fact Mexico is around 1.3 times bigger.

"One alternative to Mercator's projection that was popularized in the 1970s and 1980s is the Gall-Peters projection, which is equal-area, but quite ugly," Edney said. "My academic grandfather, Arthur Robinson, said it made the continents look like long underwear hung on a line to dry."

Lee Jantz, coordinator of UT's Forensic Anthropology Center (FAC); Richard Jantz, professor emeritus and former director of the FAC; and Joanne Devlin, adjunct assistant professor, examined 1,500 skulls dating back to the mid-1800s through the mid-1980s. They noticed U.S. skulls have become larger, taller and narrower as seen from the front and faces have become significantly narrower and higher.

The researchers cannot pinpoint a reason as to why American head shapes are changing and whether it is primarily due to evolution or lifestyle changes.

"The varieties of changes that have swept American life make determining an exact cause an endlessly complicated proposition," said Lee Jantz. "It likely results from modified growth patterns because of better nutrition, lower infant and maternal mortality, less physical work, and a breakdown of former ethnic barriers to marriage. Which of these is paramount we do not know."

The researchers found that the average height from the base to the top of the skull in men has increased by eight millimeters (0.3 inches). The skull size has grown by 200 cubic centimeters, a space equivalent to a tennis ball. In women, the corresponding increases are seven millimeters and 180 cubic centimeters.

Skull height has increased 6.8 percent since the late 1800s, while body height has increased 5.6 percent and femur length has only increased about 2 percent. Also, skull-height has continued to change whereas the overall heightening has recently slowed or stopped.

The scientists also noted changes that illustrate our population is maturing sooner. This is reflected in the earlier closing of a separation in the bone structure of the skull called the spheno-occipital synchondrosis, which in the past was thought to fuse at about age twenty. Richard Jantz and Natalie Shirley, an adjunct assistant professor in the FAC, have found the bone is fusing much earlier -- 14 for girls and 16 for boys.

America's obesity epidemic is the latest development that could affect skeletal shape but its precise effects are unclear.

"This might affect skull shape by changing the hormonal environment, which in turn could affect timing of growth and maturation," said Richard Jantz. "We know it has an effect on the long bones by increasing muscle attachment areas, increasing arthritis at certain joints, especially the knee, and increasing the weight bearing capacity."

The research only assessed Americans of European ancestry because they provided the largest sample sizes to work with. Richard Jantz said changes in skeletal structure are taking place in many parts of the world, but tend to be less studied. He said research has uncovered shifts in skull shape in Europe though it is not as dramatic as seen in the U.S.

The findings were presented on April 14 in Portland, Ore. at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is the first meteor shower of the year. At the maximum, over 100 shooting stars per hour can be observed under optimal conditions. This makes it one of the strongest annual meteor showers alongside the Perseids and Geminids. Unfortunately this year it was often very cloudy in my region, but I could still observe a few meteors. I made the recordings in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Irony or not, the personae that guitarist Ace Frehley adopted for the wildly successful rock band KISS was that of The Spaceman. Frehley claims to have had multiple UFO sightings: "I see them all the time in upstate New York where my place is." He spoke about one sighting he had in the band's early days:

"It was very strange. We were flying from LA to NY. This happened sometime before July of 1974, following the recording of our second album. The flight had been delayed six hours, and by the time we boarded, it was well after midnight. It's 3 human driven birds. One Helo is just flying dark. They are probably on some training mission or just trying to get some flight hours in. The resolution is pretty bad, but based off my navy experience in the Squadron community that's what it looks like.

It’s these types of second-hand sightings — security cam footage with no human witnesses – that make UFO analysis so difficult and frustrating. It’s why the Pentagon is sticking with pilot and radar sightings that are easier to verify … although obviously still difficult to diagnose.

The shape-shifting clouds of starling birds, the organization of neural networks or the structure of an anthill: nature is full of complex systems whose behaviors can be modeled using mathematical tools. The same is true for the labyrinthine patterns formed by the green or black scales of the ocellated lizard. A multidisciplinary team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) explains, thanks to a very simple mathematical equation, the complexity of the system that generates these patterns.

The group of Michel Milinkovitch, Professor at the Department of Genetics and Evolution, and Stanislav Smirnov, Professor at the Section of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science of the UNIGE, have been studying the distribution of colored scales on the skin of ocellated lizards.

Szabolcs Zakany, a theoretical physicist in Michel Milinkovitch’s laboratory, teamed up with the two professors to determine whether this change in the color of the scales could obey a simple mathematical law. The researchers turned to the Lenz-Ising model, developed in the 1920’s, to describe the behavior of magnetic particles that possess spontaneous magnetization. The particles can be in two different states (+1 or -1) and interact only with their first neighbors.

“The elegance of the Lenz-Ising model is that it describes these dynamics using a single equation with only two parameters: the energy of the aligned or misaligned neighbors, and the energy of an external magnetic field that tends to push all particles toward the +1 or -1 state,” explains Zakany.

Note that the early and late parts of the night, when the Sun is close to the horizon, results in a very large number of illuminated satellites that will saturate the detectors and cause a large amount of "lost science" due to these trails. Note also that, during all times of the night, observations near the horizon suffer the most from these new satellites. Satellites in a higher orbit, such as those currently proposed by OneWeb, will be less bright but will cause problems for longer periods of time, including all throughout the night, while satellites in low orbit, such as SpaceX's Starlink, will exacerbate the problems of satellites close to the horizon and in the post-sunset/pre-dawn skies.

Steve Quayle who has been researching giants for decades has told some interesting stories. He said a giant in the Solomon Islands was irritated by the sound of a tractor. It came out of a cave and threw it using harmonic levitation. They have powerful mental abilities and can kill or stun prey. It seems similar to what the Draco are able to do like full immersion telepathy. This may have been depicted in the 2002 movie Time Machine. The being played by Jeremy Irons could be a Draco/human hybrid.

Humanity faces a crisis. At the rapid rate Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing, we will quickly reach the point of Ray Kurzweil’s “Singularity”—the point where AI equals human intelligence. Then AI will proceed beyond—to “Superintelligence.” The superintelligent AI will be so smart they will have the capability to destroy their creators. Unless, as a new theme in the AI world argues, we learn to impart human values to these machines—a process (the “values loading problem”) now seen as extremely tricky—we are toast. Yup, like toast, we will be eaten for breakfast. Maybe we last until lunch.

The AI Onslaught

AI has made tremendous progress. AI programs are current champions in a multitude of games—chess, checkers, backgammon, Othello, even Jeopardy. Unfortunately, each of these programs has logic and algorithms very specific to the game; none are generalizable to a true, general intelligence (AGI)—what humans are considered to be. AI has seen three major approaches. The first is the standard “symbolic” programming with which most are familiar. It has led to theorem provers, language-understanding programs, and problem solvers. Another approach—evolutionary algorithms—has attempted to “evolve” programs. A third, neural networks, has numerous achievements, generally in applying statistical techniques to detecting patterns. It boasts nearly 150,000 academic papers. But all lead to a large black hole from which no clear exit is seen. On the other side stand two high, admittedly untaken, hills—common-sense knowledge and true-language comprehension.

The two hills are connected. Here is a commonsense problem: Given a 12-inch cubical box, a razor blade, rubber bands, staples, a pencil, string, toothpicks, a piece of cheese—create a mousetrap. We might make a “crossbow” where the pencil is inserted into a hole in the box’s side, pulled back outside the box by the rubber bands, notched in place by the toothpick, and a string tied to the toothpick and the cheese. Or we might create a “beheader,” with razorblade notched into the pencil, one pencil end anchored in the box corner, the pencil-axe raised up by the toothpick, with string attached again to toothpick and cheese. Both solutions require concrete knowledge and experience of physical dynamics, forces, properties of materials. Both are “analogic” solutions. The linguistic statement, “The mouse trap is a crossbow,” is an analogy. Douglas Hofstadter of Gödel, Escher, Bach fame, in his recent tome (Surfaces and Essences), while showing indisputably that analogy is the foundational operation of human thought, ridicules all current AI language-understanding programs (SIRI included). The problem is that language is based on analogy, and Hofstadter clearly doubts that computers, as we know them, can handle analogy at all.

But the black hole and untaken hills are not seen as stopping the superintelligence onslaught. Oxford professor, Nick Bostrom (Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies), having taken us to the edge of the black hole in his book, veers away, placing his bet on whole brain emulation (WBE). WBE relies on the neuroscientists to map, via neural recordings, the functioning of the brain. But this is a shaky bet; WBE is an Everest. We face an 85-billion-neuron brain with roughly 1,000 types of neurons, the functions of none of these types we understand. We do not know basic facts, such as how memory (our experience) is stored. We are quite certain that the brain is not using what we understand currently as “computation,” but we do not know what this other form is. We face data from neural recordings that will be so massive, it will be in zeta-bytes, yet any interpretation will be completely dependent on a guiding theory—note, a theory—when we have none such. It will be, as neuroscientists Marcus and Freeman note (The Future of the Brain), like trying to learn what a laptop is and does by taking electrical recordings of its components when we have no theory of, or knowledge of, the existence of something called “software.”

This is to say, we really have no clue what type of “device” the brain actually is. Yet Bostrom, with the rest of AI, sails serenely on from this subject of brain emulation, confident without a qualm that we will have recreated the brain as a silicon and wires device. Since it is certain that we will have electronics, we can speed up the transmission velocities, say, by 10,000x, thus allowing the device to quickly develop, creating and moving to a superintelligence and thus to the terrible threat of that future breakfast. But, but… what if the brain is a “device” that cannot be replicated in silicon at all?

"Burning plasma achieved in inertial fusion experiments for the first time

For more than 60 years, scientists have sought to understand and control the process of fusion, a quest to harness the vast amounts of energy released when nuclei in fuel come together. A paper published today in the journal “Nature” describes recent experiments that have achieved a burning plasma state in fusion, helping steer fusion research closer than it has ever been to its ultimate goal: a self-sustaining, controlled reaction.

Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers, including members of the Physics division, contributed essential capabilities in diagnostic science to achieve and analyze the unprecedented results. Their diagnostic advances helped transition fusion research to its current era at the threshold of ignition — the point at which a fusion reaction generates more energy than it receives and can burn on its own.

“These experiments indicate a transition to a different physics regime,” said Los Alamos physicist Hermann Geppert-Kleinrath, a member of the team at the National Ignition Facility working on the burning plasma project. “The research described in this paper marks where alpha heating in the reactions outcompeted the loss between radiation and heat conduction. It’s an exciting time because we’re at the point where continued marginal gains in how we conduct our experiments will lead to exponential improvements.”

The laser inertial confinement fusion experiments took place at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Within a specially constructed cavity, a carbon-formed capsule, about one millimeter in diameter, contains both cryogenically frozen deuterium-tritium and the same as gas mixture — the fuel. When the cavity is heated with lasers, an x-ray bath results and warms the capsule until the fuel inside is compressed. The resulting fusion of the deuterium and tritium nuclei releases neutrons and alpha particles; the latter deposit their energy back into the hotspot of the reaction and in so doing contribute to the propagation of the burn. Such an alpha-dominated reaction is sought after as a key element in self-sustaining fusion.

Extreme forces require special capabilities

The forces at work in fusion are extreme. In the experiments described in the Nature paper, the temperature during the fusion reaction is about three times hotter than the center of the sun. The length of the reaction is incredibly short, too, approximately 130 picoseconds — the time it takes light to travel just four centimeters (light travels at 300,000 kilometers per second).

“It’s an unbelievably tough physics regime to do measurements on,” said Geppert-Kleinrath. “We’re essentially creating a miniature sun in the laboratory.”

In order to capture meaningful data from that event, Los Alamos researchers contributed several key diagnostic capabilities for the National Ignition Facility, each containing immense technical challenges. Hermann’s team is responsible for the gamma reaction history diagnostic, providing bang time (the time of maximum compression and reaction rate — also called stagnation) and burn duration. The gamma reaction history instrument measures reactions with time resolution down to ten picoseconds — a tiny timescale on which light only travels millimeters.

Physicist Verena Geppert-Kleinrath, team leader for advanced imaging at Los Alamos, led the neutron imaging capabilities that provided three-dimensional hot spot shapes for the National Ignition Facility experiments. (Coincidentally, Verena is married to Hermann.) Neutron imaging meant measuring a 70-micron hotspot — equal to the thickness of a human hair — from 30 meters away through an extended aperture with openings only a few microns wide.

“We’re very proud that coming from different fields and different groups within physics we have the privilege of being part of this very momentous achievement together,” said Verena Geppert-Kleinrath. “Los Alamos’ physics teams have been able to provide unique diagnostics to show the markers that we are looking for under challenging conditions.”

Improvements make progress toward fusion

Ultimately, the experiments explored the criteria for ignition — how fusion can be generated, and how it can be generated in such a way that it propagates itself, releasing more energy from the fuel than the energy it took to start the reaction courtesy of the lasers. The experiments and the analysis of the results suggested gradual improvements that could keep more energy inside the reaction instead of being lost to radioactivity or heat conduction. For instance, the fuel fill tube’s size was identified as a performance limitation through 3D neutron imaging, and future experiments used a specially engineered fill tube that was much smaller.

The four experiments or “shots” represented significant accomplishments in achieving burning plasma. The fourth shot saw more energy created than was lost due to radiation or heat conduction and likely may have achieved propagation had the capsule not disassembled in the implosion. The total energy output, including the laser energy to start the reaction, was still a net negative, but the clear improvement represented a tipping point toward self-sustaining fusion.

The gradual improvements paid off significantly in August 2021, when an experiment at the National Ignition Facility achieved a yield of 1.3 megajoules — an eight-fold increase over the experiments described in the Nature publication. While falling just short of one definition of ignition, the experiment suggests that fusion research has entered a new era, with further gradual improvements perhaps able to achieve ignition and self-sustaining fusion.

“We’re right at the cliff of experiments fizzling out versus experiments going into the ignition regime,” said Hermann Geppert-Kleinrath. “Once you transition into this regime where alpha heating is dominating, marginal gains in how we do the experiment lead to very large gains in yield.”

Getting results on a grand challenge problem

Understanding the dynamics of fusion provides critical insight supporting stockpile stewardship. An important objective of the Stockpile Stewardship Program, the pursuit of ignition and high fusion yields in the laboratory are also a “grand challenge” scientific problem demanding integrated capabilities. The experiments at the National Ignition Facility provide testing for those challenges that cannot be realized in any other way. Teams dedicated to simulation work hand-in-hand with the Physics division researchers to constantly improve Stockpile Stewardship modeling capabilities based on National Ignition Facility experiments and their diagnostic markers.

Achieving ignition provides understanding of some processes that cannot be addressed in any other way. Reflecting the challenge and the success of this particular series of fusion experiments, in December 2021 the Burning Plasma at the National Ignition Facility team was recognized by the Department of Energy with the Secretary’s Honors Award. The team earned an Achievement Award “given to groups of employees and contractors who together accomplished significant achievements on behalf of the Department.” The Honors Awards are the department’s highest recognition.

THE ANCIENT ONES: The True Story of the UFO Contacts of Don Anderson

In 1984, 24-year-old Don Anderson of Spanish Fork, Utah woke up to see a gray alien inside his
bedroom, taking away his 4-year-old son. Don leaped out of bed and informed the gray that if they were going to take his son, he wanted to join them. The gray agreed. Both Don and his son were taken onboard a craft where they were greeted by a female human-looking ET who gave them a tour of the craft. The ET informed Don of several events which would soon occur in his personal life. Don and his son were then returned.

This event caused a radical shift in Don's life. He recognized the gray as a friend and teacher, and he remembered having encountered him before. In fact, several bizarre events which Don had ignored, denied or explained away now suddenly made sense, and he realized he had been experiencing UFO contact his entire life. He remembered being visited and taken as a young boy. He remembered seeing a UFO and the gray at age ten, then being taken onboard a craft and taught how to perform telekinesis and about the aliens' technology. A missing time event at age fourteen now revealed itself to be an extensive onboard UFO encounter during which he was again taken beyond Earth and taught by the ETs. He even remembered a "pre-life" encounter during which his gray alien guide showed Don's mother giving birth to him.

Don, who had been religious, now realized that he was in contact with extraterrestrials. This began a lifelong search for answers. He also began experiencing a wide variety of paranormal events including precognition, out-of-body experiences, communication with spirits and more. And of course, more UFO encounters.

He once went camping with some friends (also UFO contactees) not far from the famous Skinwalker Ranch, hoping to initiate contact with praying mantis ETs. To the amazement of Don and his friends, a huge UFO showed up, followed by several mantis ETs. This culminated in a long and profound onboard encounter during which Don communicated with the praying mantis aliens who again gave him information about his personal life and showed him many strange and wonderful things onboard the craft.

It wasn't long before more encounters occurred. On one occasion, Don was visited by a familiar human-looking ET who cured him of a chest cold. On another occasion he was taken onboard and treated for a heart problem.

Don's encounters attracted the attention of the U.S. military who threatened him not to talk about his experiences. As a result, Don decided to go public. He spoke at conventions and began doing interviews and writing about his experiences. He even put together a website called "Path of Shaballa" to share the spiritual information he learned at the hands of the ETs. Shaballa can be translated as "Wisdom of the Ancient Ones."

Don's case is more extensive than most. He has worked hard to understand his encounters, learn from them, and share the wisdom he has been given. He says that while people are very interested in the physical aspects of his encounters, it is the spiritual information that is the most important and is the reason he decided to go public.

Instead, the impact will erode a small amount of atmosphere from Venus's unprotected cloudtops. The Earth impact on Feb. 10th will play out differently. Our planet's magnetic field is expected to intercept the CME, preventing it from reaching the atmosphere below. Reverberations from the impact could spark a G1-class geomagnetic storm with high-latitude auroras spilling out of the Arctic Circle.

The CME was hurled into space on Feb. 6th by a long-duration solar flare in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2939. The explosion peaked at category C3, which is considered to be weak. However, the flare made up for its low amplitude by lasting for more than 3 hours.

At 190 years old, Jonathan the tortoise has been declared the oldest living tortoise ever to live. Plus, his caregivers say, he is still sexually active even at his advanced age, regularly getting it on reptile style with two of the other tortoises also living on the St Helena Government House grounds.

Tortoises are known for their long lives. In captivity, they regularly grow to 100 years of age, and in the wild, they can reach as much as 150 years old. The difference in expected lifespan is due to the foods available in the wild and the varying quality of care tortoises in captivity receive. Now, the Guinness Book of World Records has weighed in, declaring the 190-year-old Jonathan the oldest living tortoise ever recorded.

“His official record title is oldest chelonian – a category which encompasses all turtles, terrapins, and tortoises,” explains Guinness World Records. “The previous oldest chelonian was Tu’i Malila, a radiated tortoise that lived to be at least 188. Presented to the royal family of Tonga by Captain Cook c.1777, Tu’i Malila remained in their care until its death in 1965. Jonathan is believed to have been born c. 1832, thus making him 190 years old in 2022. Jonathan’s age is an estimation based on the fact that he was fully mature, and hence at least 50 years old when he arrived in St Helena from the Seychelles in 1882. In all likelihood, he is even older than we think.”

Taurus the Bull resides near the constellation Orion. In particular, it contains two famous star clusters that are easy to spot: the Pleiades and the Hyades. Taurus is a constellation of the zodiac, which means the sun, moon and planets travel through it regularly.

You can see the constellation Taurus the Bull during Northern Hemisphere fall through spring (or Southern Hemisphere spring through fall). It sits in the evening sky close to the easy-to-see constellation Orion. Basically, Taurus the Bull takes the form a two-pronged fork, with the center V-shape consisting of an actual star cluster – a family of stars in space – that we call the Hyades. The Hyades, specifically, marks the face of the Bull. The bright red star Aldebaran shines in the V, too. Accordingly, this star represents the Bull’s fiery eye. In addition, Taurus holds another famous star cluster, which we call the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. It has the shape of a tiny dipper.

Between Mars and Jupiter lie some of the relics of the early Solar System: the main asteroid belt. This belt is full of unusual asteroids whose origins reveal the building blocks of the early terrestrial planets. Of these, one of the more intriguing is Elektra, imaged here using the instrument SPHERE, installed on ESO’s Very Large Telescope at Paranal, Chile. Previously, Elektra was known to have not one but two moons orbiting it, shown by the orange and green orbits respectively. But now a team of astronomers, led by Anthony Berdeu, from the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, have found a new satellite orbiting the asteroid — shown with the blue orbit. This discovery makes Elektra the first ever quadruple asteroid system.

In November of 2020, a freak wave came out of the blue, lifting a lonesome buoy off the coast of British Columbia 17.6 meters high (58 feet). The four-story wall of water has now been confirmed as the most extreme rogue wave ever recorded.

Such an exceptional event is thought to occur only once every 1,300 years. And unless the buoy had been taken for a ride, we might never have known it happened.

On late winter evenings and throughout northern spring, Cassiopeia the Queen descends from her throne in the northwest after nightfall. Cassiopeia is one of the easiest constellations to spot because of its distinctive shape. Cassiopeia looks like the letter W or M. Look for the Queen as your sky gets dark in February and March. She’ll be lower in the northwest as spring begins to unfold. For those in the northern U.S. and Canada, Cassiopeia is circumpolar, or above the horizon all night every night.

If you’re viewing Cassiopeia as the letter W, the stars, from left to right, are Segin, Ruchbah, Gamma Cassiopeiae, Schedar and Caph.

According to the stars, the United States is finally getting a spiritual makeover with its first-ever Pluto Return on Feb. 22, 2022.

Astronomers Find Largest Galaxy Yet: Alcyoneus

A team of astronomers, led by Martijn Oei of Leiden University, said last week (February 16, 2022) they’ve found the largest galaxy yet seen, not in visible light, but via radio astronomy. This galaxy spans a mind-boggling 16 million light-years. Some 100 Milky Way galaxies laid end to end would not equal the length of this newly discovered galaxy. Alcyoneus lies relatively nearby as galaxies go, only 3 billion light-years away. It spans an area in our sky about the size of a full moon. Scientists have named the new galaxy Alcyoneus.

Record-Breaking Winds Blast Europe in the Worst Storm in Decades

Record-breaking gusts of up to 122 mph (196 km/h) were recorded in England Friday (Feb. 18) as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and parts of the Netherlands and France face their worst storm in over three decades.

Trees have collapsed, trucks and cars have toppled on their sides, and thousands of homes have been left without power as the storm Eunice pummeled coastal regions around the Atlantic Archipelago and Europe's western coasts with wind, snow and heavy rain, according to the UK Met Office.
