The Big Dipper Can Lead You to Polaris & the Little Dipper

Many people say they can spot the Big Dipper easily, but not the Little Dipper. The Little Dipper’s stars are fainter, and its dipper pattern is less dipper-like than its larger neighbor. The best way to find the Little Dipper is to use the Big Dipper as a guide.

The Big and Little Dippers aren’t constellations. They’re asterisms, or noticeable patterns on the sky’s dome. The Big Dipper belongs to the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The Little Dipper belongs to the constellation Ursa Minor, the Smaller Bear or Lesser Bear.

Polaris is special because Earth’s northern axis points (nearly) to its location in the sky. It’s the star around which the entire northern sky appears to turn.

Polaris is less than a degree away from the true north celestial pole on the sky’s dome now. It’ll be closest to true north – less than half a degree away – in the year 2102. The change in the location of the celestial pole with respect to Polaris is due to a motion of Earth called precession. This motion causes Earth’s axis to trace out a circle among the stars every 26,000 years.

It doesn’t matter how the Big Dipper is oriented in your sky. If you can see it, the 2 outer stars in its bowl will point to Polaris.

Farside Explosion Targets Mercury

A coronal mass ejection (CME) flew away from the farside of the sun during the late hours of April 11th. A new NASA model shows it is going to hit Mercury. Note the orange dot in this forecast animation:

If the CME overwhelms Mercury's relatively weak magnetic field, it could scour material off the planet's surface creating a temporary atmosphere and adding material to Mercury's comet-like tail.

The farside of the sun has been active this week, with more than one significant CME. Helioseismic soundings of the farside reveal a large region of intense magnetism--probably a complex sunspot group. It will rotate over the sun's eastern limb about a week from now.

Microscopic Apollo 11 Moon Dust Sells for $500K at Auction

A minuscule amount of microscopic moon dust has sold for half a million dollars after NASA determined that the particles are part of the first lunar sample collected by Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong.

The successful sale marks the end of a complicated and sometimes convoluted history for the moon dust since it arrived on Earth in 1969. The tiny samples, which were so small that Bonhams was unable to provide a total weight and cited their size in microns, were found in the seams of a bag used to hold the first lunar sample collected by an astronaut on the moon.

The specks of moon dust were used by a NASA curator to determine that the pouch, or "contingency sample return container decontamination bag," had flown on the Apollo 11 mission after it was sold at a government forfeiture auction in 2015. After NASA refused to relinquish the bag, a series of lawsuits filed by the auction winner resulted in the bag being ruled the buyer's property.

A subsequent legal dispute, which was settled out of court, ended with NASA also turning over the test samples after the bag was auctioned for $1,812,500 in 2017.

Doctor-Turned-Priest Determines From the Shroud of Turin How Jesus Died

A new study published in the journal Catholic Medical Quarterly claims to have discovered the specific cause of Jesus Christ’s death. He died from excessive bleeding caused by a severely dislocated shoulder, the study asserts, an injury he allegedly suffered while carrying the heavy cross upon which he was eventually crucified. This from retired neurologist Patrick Pullicino, who closely analyzed data obtained from the Shroud of Turin, a controversial artifact reputed to be Jesus’ burial cloth.

Rev. Prof. Pullicino traded in his doctor’s smock for a priest’s collar a few years ago. But his past experiences made him uniquely qualified to take a closer look at the death of Jesus Christ.

Pullicino’s work in this instance was actually a meta-analysis, of previous studies carried out by forensic and medical experts who had access to high-quality images of the Shroud of Turin, or the shroud itself. He examined the information and imagery they’d published, to see if he could gain more insight into how Jesus was impacted by the specific wounds he suffered (operating on the assumption that the figure pictured on the shroud was in fact Jesus).

In his article, Pullicino draws attention to the positioning of Jesus’s shoulder on the shroud image. It has obviously been dislocated, he writes, and had been pulled so far out its socket that the right hand was stretched four inches (10 centimeters) lower than the left. According to the Reverend Professor, a dislocation this radical would have caused a rupture in the subclavian artery, which is tasked with supplying blood to the head, neck, shoulders, and arms. Significant internal bleeding would inevitably accompany such an injury, and unless medical assistance was offered, the final result would be death.

Light From Ancient Namibian Stone Could Hold Key to Future Quantum Computers

A special form of light made using an ancient Namibian gemstone could be the key to new light-based quantum computers. This could solve long-held scientific mysteries, according to new research led by the University of St Andrews.

The research, conducted in collaboration with scientists at Harvard University in the US, Macquarie University in Australia and Aarhus University in Denmark and published in Nature Materials, used a naturally mined cuprous oxide (Cu2O) gemstone from Namibia to produce Rydberg polaritons, the largest hybrid particles of light and matter ever created.

Rydberg polaritons switch continually from light to matter and back again. In Rydberg polaritons, light and matter are like two sides of a coin, and the matter side is what makes polaritons interact with each other. This interaction is crucial because this is what allows the creation of quantum simulators, a special type of quantum computer, where information is stored in quantum bits. These quantum bits, unlike the binary bits in classical computers that can only be 0 or 1, can take any value between 0 and 1. They can therefore store much more information and perform several processes simultaneously.

Project lead Dr. Hamid Ohadi, of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews, says that "making a quantum simulator with light is the holy grail of science. We have taken a huge leap towards this by creating Rydberg polaritons, the key ingredient of it."

To create Rydberg polaritons, the researchers trapped light between two highly reflective mirrors. A cuprous oxide crystal from a stone mined in Namibia was then thinned and polished to a 30-micrometer thick slab (thinner than a strand of human hair) and sandwiched between the two mirrors to make Rydberg polaritons 100 times larger than ever demonstrated before.

In December of 1986, the Pentagon, the CIA, FBI, the Department of Energy, and just about every other federal agency you can think of came together in Indianapolis for an enormous training exercise code-named Mighty Derringer. The plan was to simulate a nuclear terrorist incident and explore how every agency would react and whether they would cooperate. To enhance the verisimilitude of the war games, the U.S. government went so far as to record a fake news broadcast about a nuclear bomb exploding in Indianapolis.

Until now, no one outside of the government has seen the video.

Gizmodo obtained the Mighty Derringer footage through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which operates under the Department of Energy.

If you round up, it was an X-flare. On April 21st at 0157 UT, Earth-orbiting satellites detected a strong M9.6-class solar flare. The source was sunspot complex AR2993-94, which is almost directly facing Earth.

Radiation from the flare caused a shortwave radio blackout over southeast Asia and Australia. Remarkably, this is the second day in a row the same region of Earth has experienced a radio blackout. It happened yesterday, too, in response to an even stronger X2.2 flare.

Shortly after the flare, the US Air Force reported a Type II solar radio burst--a natural form of radio noise produced by shock waves in the leading edge of a CME. This means we can expect a CME to emerge from the blast site.

Update: A CME did emerge from the blast site, but it was faint and apparently off-target. It looks like it will miss Earth. NOAA analysts are evaluating the possibility of a glancing blow. Stay tuned

Space.com: Crystal Planet, the new comic book, is a time-traveling space odyssey. What were your inspirations behind the story?

Satriani: I love all science fiction. Think I started really falling hard for it when I wound up as a young kid with a Ray Bradbury collection of short stories. And oddly enough, I think it was the story of "The Illustrated Man." That hit me as just being so unique, because it was science fiction but it had nothing to do with aliens or, you know, stars exploding and time travel, and it was just so creative. And from there, I know it's a weird jump, but I got into Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and I also saw a lot of his work as being kind of science fiction in a way. He just broke down the barriers between social commentary, the actual structure of the novel and science fiction.

That led me to Philip K. Dick, and you know, it's a watershed; once you get into sci-fi writers, you realize that there's just so much great stuff out there.

We have the graphic novels coming out towards the end of this year, which is great, and the story is growing. But it all started with a video, "Lies and Truths".

Group Preparing to Send Messages to TRAPPIST-1

A group known as Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) is preparing to send digital messages to the Trappist-1 exoplanet system. Planned for October 2022, that series of broadcasts will be followed by a group of messages intended for another exoplanet system known as K2-18b. At 39 and 124 light-years away, respectively, both stellar systems contain rocky exoplanets within the host star’s habitable zone. Astronomers typically characterize the habitable zone as the orbital altitude where liquid water can theoretically exist on the planet’s surface. On Earth, liquid water is a crucial ingredient for life.

The target, the Trappist-1 system, is home to at least seven exoplanets, three of which may be rocky exoplanets housed within the star’s habitable zone. Using the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall, UK, the planners behind the METI project say they will execute the first of two powerful radio broadcasts across four different phases of the same frequency on October 4th of this year.

Features found on Jupiter’s moon Europa may dramatically increase the chances of finding life within its sub-surface oceans. That’s because the “double ridges” found all across the Jovian moon’s icy surface are strikingly similar to those found on the ice sheets of Greenland. In Greenland, the ridges are caused by the activity of underground water, a key ingredient for life as we know it.

NASA and the world’s other space agencies are hot on the trail of extraterrestrial life. Numerous missions to Mars are (and were) designed to aid the hunt for life, including the Perseverance rover, which plans to stash tantalizing samples of Martian soil for a future sample return mission. The clouds of Venus are another tempting target, and Saturn’s moon Enceladus joined the list in 2005, when researchers spotted water gushing from a subsurface ocean and into outer space. Still, few targets are as tantalizing as Jupiter’s moon Europa ...

“Europa is fantastic,” said Michael Bland, a US Geological Survey space scientist. “Of anywhere in the solar system, outside the Earth, it has the greatest potential, I think, for maintaining a habitable environment that could support microbial life.”

Over the past 32 years, Hubble has made about 1.4 million observations of our Universe. Physicist Casey Handmer was curious how much of the sky has been imaged by Hubble, and figured out how to map out all of Hubble’s observations into one big picture of the sky.

It’s a gorgeous, almost poetic look at Hubble’s collective view of the cosmos. So, how much of the sky has Hubble imaged? The answer might surprise you.

Handmer pondered that question, and determined that since Hubble’s field of view is 202 arc seconds, it would take about 3.2 million observations to cover the sky. Since Hubble has made about 1.4 million observations ever since it launched in 1990, would the observatory have imaged about half of the sky? Not quite.

He overseas program officers for two simulator contracts and represents Luke as F-16 training systems subject matter expert. He was also a crash safety inspector, which he now finds similar to UAP investigations.

This Planetary Geomorphology imagery features work by PSI Research Scientist Matthew Chojnacki on megaripples on the surface of Mars.

Megaripples, intermediate-scale bedforms caused by the action of the wind, have been studied extensively and are thought to be largely inactive relics of past climates, save for a few exceptions.

Megaripples on Mars are about 1 to 2 meters tall and have 5 to 40 meter spacing, where there size falls between ripples that are about 40 centimeters tall with 1 to 5 meter spacing and dunes that can reach hundreds of meters in height with spacing of 100 to 300 meters. Whereas the megaripples migration rates are slow in comparison (average of 0.13 meters per Earth year), some of the nearby ripples were found to migrate an average equivalent of 9.6 meters per year over just 22 days in northern summer – unprecedented rates for Mars. These high rates of sand movement help explain the megaripple activity.

Catch a Bright Supernova in Virgo

Supernova 2022hrs was discovered by amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki on April 16.619 (14:50h UT) in NGC 4647, an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation of Virgo. He used a 0.5-metre, f/6 telescope and a CCD camera. The supernova shone at around magnitude +15 at discovery and has since brightened by over two magnitudes, with estimates at the time of writing (26 April) hovering around magnitude +12.5.

Virgo is presently very well placed on late evenings. NGC 4647 and M60 lie on the eastern outskirts of the main agglomeration of Virgo Cluster galaxies that straddle the boundary between Virgo and Coma Berenices. Point your telescope 4.6 degrees slightly north of due west from magnitude +2.8 Vindemiatrix (epsilon Virginis).

By 10pm BST, Arp 216 lies 46° high in the south-eastern sky, culminating 50° by 11.20pm. Under a dark and transparent sky, the supernova should be visible through a 200–250mm (eight- to ten-inch telescope). Advantageously, the Moon is out of the way presently in the evening sky, reaching ‘new’ on 30 April.

What is that large dark spot on Jupiter? It's the shadow of Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon. When Jupiter's moons cross between the Jovian giant and the Sun, they created shadows just like when the Earth's moon crosses between the Earth and the Sun. Also like on Earth, if you were in a dark shadow on Jupiter, you would see a moon completely eclipse the Sun. Unlike on Earth, moon shadows occur most days on Jupiter -- what's more unusual is that a spacecraft was close enough to record one with a high-resolution image. That spacecraft, Juno, was passing so close to Jupiter in late February that nearby clouds and the dark eclipse shadow appear relatively large. Juno has made many discoveries about our Solar System's largest planet, including, recently, rapidly expanding circular auroras.

Days after returning from his record-setting 355 days in space, NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei described what it was like on board the International Space Station with Roscosmos cosmonauts as the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolded back on Earth.

"There's a sense of powerlessness that goes along with it, when you see people that need help and you can't do anything about it," Vande Hei said in a news conference Tuesday. The invasion, he said, "was not a topic I shied away from." However, he added, they weren't very long discussions, and the group remained focused on their mission together.

Speaking of the Russian cosmonauts, he said, "They were and continue to be very dear friends of mine."

Pot Brimming With Roman Coins Discovered in Switzerland

An amateur treasure hunter in Switzerland has discovered a buried clay pot filled to the brim with 1,290 Roman coins that date to the fourth century A.D. However, an odd divider found within the pot — a piece of cowhide — has stumped archaeologists.

"It was clearly used as a separation," said Reto Marti, head of the archaeological department of the canton of Basel-Landschaft (informally called Baselland) in northern Switzerland, and who helped to excavate and examine the coin pot. "But why the coins are separated … we cannot tell for the moment."

Daniel Lüdin, an amateur archaeologist with a metal detector, discovered the coin pot on Sept. 6, 2021, not too far from the 13th-century Wildenstein Castle in Bubendorf, a municipality in Baselland, according to a translated statement released on April 13. When the metal detector began beeping, Lüdin started to dig and soon discovered several Roman coins and pottery fragments.

Realizing he had unearthed a Roman coin hoard, Lüdin carefully reburied the find and told Archäologie Baselland of his discovery. MIT researchers have developed a portable desalination unit, weighing less than 10 kilograms, that can remove particles and salts to generate drinking water.

The suitcase-sized device, which requires less power to operate than a cell phone charger, can also be driven by a small, portable solar panel, which can be purchased (presently) for around $50. It automatically generates drinking water that exceeds World Health Organization quality standards. The technology is packaged into a user-friendly device that runs with the push of one button.

Unlike other portable desalination units that require water to pass through filters, this device utilizes electrical power to remove particles from drinking water. Eliminating the need for replacement filters greatly reduces the long-term maintenance requirements.

What's happened to the Sun? Two days ago, parts of South America were treated to a partial solar eclipse -- where the Moon blocked out part of the Sun. The featured image shows an image of the partially eclipsed Sun through clouds as it was setting over Patagonia, Argentina. In the tilted image, Earth is toward the right. During the eclipse, the Moon moved partly between Earth and the Sun. Although a visually impressive sight, the slight dimming of surroundings during this partial eclipse was less noticeable than dimming created by a thick cloud. In about two weeks, all of South America and part of North America will experience a total lunar eclipse -- where the Earth moves completely between the Moon and the Sun. In about two years, a total solar eclipse will cross North America.

It may sound strange and unusual, but there are now several documented cases on record in which people have met ETs, been taken onboard an extraterrestrial craft and shown an alien book. It doesn't happen often, but there are more cases than you might think.

One very well-known case is Betty Hill, who was taken onboard a UFO with her husband, Barney in 1961 in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. While on the craft, Betty was given a large book, filled with alien symbols in long narrow columns.

Another famous case is Betty Andreasson, a lifelong contactee from Massachusetts, who was given a thin blue book with glowing white pages, and was actually allowed to keep it in her home and study it for a short period of time.

These cases are not unique. A fascinating case involving an alien book comes from Jeff Selver, a Canadian businessman who has recently and courageously stepped forward to reveal his encounters with ETs. During an onboard UFO encounter at age sixteen, he was handed a "mystic book" and told to study its contents. The book was filled with deeply spiritual messages that would alter the course of his life.

Researcher Richard Boylan Ph.D., reports on the case of "Mike," a contactee from northern California. I thought she was joking until I actually saw what she was referring to. It was a reflective object very high in the sky and was inland. At first I thought it might be a balloon or kite , but the altitude seemed much too high. I was able to film using my iPhone 12 for 26 seconds."

NanoAvionics has been selected to build a 12U nanosatellite bus for an in-orbit demonstration of NASA's Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3). This a result of a contract between NASA Ames Research Center and AST for a 12U bus to carry NASA's payload into low Earth orbit (LEO) including an approximately 800 square foot (74 square meter) composite boom and solar sail system.

The aim of the ACS3 mission is to replace conventional rocket propellants by developing and testing solar sails using sunlight beams to thrust the nanosatellite. These solar sail propulsion systems are designed for future small interplanetary spacecrafts destined for low-cost deep-space and science missions requiring long-duration, low-thrust propulsion.

Cameras Caught a 'Space Jellyfish' Fly Over Georgia

In the wee morning hours of Thursday (May 5), a camera in Waycross, Georgia witnessed a mysterious object streaking through the sky. Bright, fast and trailed by a glowing oblong aura, the object looked a bit like a space jellyfish, as Chris Combs, a professor of aerodynamics and mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio put it on twitter.

Of course, as Combs pointed out, this space jelly was no UFO – it was a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launching from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, roughly 250 miles (400 kilometers) south of the camera. Dozens of rockets leave the launchpad at Kennedy every year, but few of them could rightly be mistaken for a bioluminescent invertebrate in the sky. So, what happened here?

According to Combs, it's a combination of physics and perfect timing. The long, blobby "body" of the jellyfish is simply exhaust leaving the Falcon 9's rocket engine nozzle. The reason the exhaust takes on such a bulbous shape has to do with the pressure difference inside and outside the nozzle. In this case, the exhaust leaving the nozzle is "under-expanded" – meaning the gas is at higher pressure than the ambient air around it as the exhaust leaves the engine's nozzle.

In addition to routine trips to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls, my family often took camping trips to "get away from it all". In reality, I was taken to key places for ritual abuse, prostitution, and pornography. In the fall of 1974, my father announced we were going to go camping "back in time" to an old-fashioned festival in the small remote town of Cedar Springs, Michigan for their annual Red Flannel Days celebration. My mother told me to pack my jeans and sweaters and my Catholic school uniform which she had washed and pressed for the occasion.

Cedar Springs was quiet, with the festival events including dilapidated amusement rides set up in a small parking lot, and contests where local farmers pitted their mules and horses against each other to see whose could pull the most weight. The main (and only) street of town was lined with the few local businesses, including the town’s red flannel underwear "long Johns" factory. In the center of town, a mock, single, jail cell had been erected to hold any and all parade participants who failed to wear the required red flannel underwear.

The jail was guarded by quasi Keystone Cops. I was amused when the townsfolk began lining up to march in the parade, with very few remaining to watch it. A mentally retarded man carried the baton to lead the parade, followed by kids on bicycles, hay-wagons of old folks, a grade school band and people walking-all in their red flannel underwear. The grand finale’ of the parade, the town fire truck, was approaching, surrounded by numerous motorcycle police.

I heard folks whispering "the President is coming". I assumed they meant the President of the underwear factory. I was wrong. I watched in horror as the fire truck rolled to a stop, and Secret Service helped then President Gerald Ford as he stepped down to the pavement.

My father was excitedly tugging on my arm, half dragging me through the wall of Secret Service agents, to talk with President Ford. I looked around nervously as my father made the necessary arrangements with Ford to prostitute me to him later that evening. VanderJagt, who never missed a parade it seemed, was signing autographs. As he smiled at me, someone roughly grabbed my arm. Nervous and startled, I screamed.

The crowd laughed as a Keystone Cop threw me in the jail, scolding me for not wearing my red flannel underwear when I was talking to the President. I was trying to be inconspicuous in hopes no one would see me with the likes of Ford, but then, they did not know him as I did. The Keystone Cop rattled on and on about "how lucky" I was until my father paid my bail and I was released from the cell.

That night, I wore my Catholic uniform as instructed and went into a dissociative trance as my father drove me to the local National Guard Armory where I was prostituted to Ford. Ford took me into an empty room, pushed me down on the wooden floor as he unzipped his pants and said, "Pray on this". Then he brutally, sexually assaulted me. Afterward, my memory was compartmentalized through use of high voltage. I was then carried out to the car where I lay in the back seat, muscles contracted, stunned, in pain, and unable to move.

When we got back to Muskegon, my father sent me to the beach as always, to let the repetition of crashing waves against the beach "wash my mind free of memory" while I watched the sun set. I was totally locked into the belief that truly there was "no place to run," not even to the President of the United States.

Arcturus is a red giant star located only 37 light-years away. It’s the 4th-brightest star in the sky and the brightest one in the northern half of the sky. Look for it on spring evenings in the Northern Hemisphere by arcing to Arcturus from the Big Dipper‘s handle.

Arcturus is the alpha star of a cone-shaped constellation called Boötes the Herdsman. It’s far enough north on the sky’s dome that – for Northern Hemisphere observers – it’s visible during some part of the night throughout most of the year. There’s an easy mnemonic for identifying this brilliant orange star: 'Follow the arc to Arcturus.'

First, locate the Big Dipper in the northern sky. Notice that the handle of the Big Dipper is a curve or arc. Extend this curve past the end of the Big Dipper’s handle, and you’ll reach Arcturus.

Unlike most of the bright stars in the nighttime sky, Arcturus has no bright neighbors. It commands the sky in the springtime and until the Summer Triangle takes over the eastern sky, Arcturus reigns the heavens.

Below is the constellation Boötes as you stand facing east on spring evenings. Seeing a Herdsman in these stars might be difficult, but the constellation is easy to imagine as a kite.

In China, Arcturus’ constellation is sometimes called the Dragon. In some classical Greek stories, Boötes was Icarus, who in another story flew too close to the sun. The translation may be questioned, but Arcturus is among the few stars mentioned in the Bible. The red giant Arcturus is roughly 25 times the diameter of our sun. It’s not the largest of the red giants, however, as this image shows.

Resembling an alien shopping bag with guts made of glowing Cheetos, a bizarre creature took center stage in new footage captured by a remotely operated vehicle deep in the Pacific Ocean.

Gliding through the sea at a depth of some 7,221 feet (2,201 meters), the ocean weirdo — actually an unknown species of sea cucumber — had its innards on display in the new clip, taken in March by an ROV exploring part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument southeast of Honolulu. The ROV was gliding over an unexplored seamount at the Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll when operators spotted the creature, said Megan Cook, the director of education and outreach at The Ocean Exploration Trust's Nautilus Live.

Sea cucumbers, or holothurians, are a diverse group, with many species distributed across the Central Pacific, Cook said. The one spotted by the ROV linked to the research vessel E/V Nautilus crew belongs to a family called Elpidiidae. These deep-sea cucumbers are scavengers that feed on marine snow, a shower of skin cells, poop and bits of dead animals that filters down to the ocean floor.

he system, comparable in size to an AA battery, contains a type of non-toxic algae called Synechocystis that naturally harvests energy from the sun through photosynthesis. The tiny electrical current this generates then interacts with an aluminium electrode and is used to power a microprocessor.

The system is made of common, inexpensive and largely recyclable materials. This means it could easily be replicated hundreds of thousands of times to power large numbers of small devices as part of the Internet of Things. The researchers say it is likely to be most useful in off-grid situations or remote locations, where small amounts of power can be very beneficial.

“The growing Internet of Things needs an increasing amount of power, and we think this will have to come from systems that can generate energy, rather than simply store it like batteries,” said Professor Christopher Howe in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biochemistry, joint senior author of the paper.

He added: “Our photosynthetic device doesn’t run down the way a battery does because it’s continually using light as the energy source.”

In the experiment, the device was used to power an Arm Cortex M0+, which is a microprocessor used widely in Internet of Things devices. It operated in a domestic environment and semi-outdoor conditions under natural light and associated temperature fluctuations, and after six months of continuous power production the results were submitted for publication.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have managed to run a computer for six months, using algae as a power source.

Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a type of blue-green algae which gives oxygen through photosynthesis when exposed to sunlight, was sealed in a small container, roughly the size of an AA battery, made of aluminum and clear plastic.The study has been published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.

Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, was inside the unit, which was then left on a windowsill. The algae photosynthesized, generating a tiny current of electricity that powered an ARM Cortex-M0+ chip.

Christopher Howe of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues argue that similar photoynthetic power generators might be the source of power for a wide spectrum of small devices in the future, without the need for the rare and unsustainable materials used in batteries today.

A mile-wide asteroid passed by Earth on Friday (May 27) at a distance about 10 times that of the space between the Earth and moon.

The asteroid, known as asteroid 7335 (1989 JA), is roughly four times the size of the Empire State Building and is the largest yet to pass by our planet in 2022.

At its closest, the asteroid was 2.5 million miles (4 million kilometers) away and it posed no threat to our planet, despite its large size of 1.1 miles (1.8 km) across. It was bright enough to see in moderate-sized telescopes.

Improving tracking of these relatively small asteroids means we are getting better at catching any potential impacts before they happen, which is why it seems like there are so many space rocks going by us these days.

Three former US cavalrymen have come forward claiming they saw a UFO while serving in the Sinai Desert on the Israel/Egypt border. They say their superiors told them to keep quiet about what they saw in December 2014.

Sergeant Travis Bingham, E4 Specialist Vishal Singh, and Private First Class Dovell Engram, were all stationed near the south end of the border, when they saw eight bright objects hovering and zipping across the sky at incredible speeds.

The trio are all trained in identifying aircraft and they believe the objects they witnessed were of non-human origin.

In 2007, lava began to pool inside one of the craters atop Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, a gentle eruption that would culminate more than a decade later in a spectacular display of spewed ash and massive lava flows. Until that final outburst, the lava lake was a tourist spectacle, a calm surface that hid the churn of magma deeper within the volcano. Now, researchers have found a new way to identify key signs of Kilauea’s eruptive potential—by listening to vibrations from these lava lakes. Eventually, they hope to use these lava “songs” to forecast when a volcano will start and stop erupting.

“It’s great that they found this other method to understand what’s happening at Kilauea,” says Philippe Jousset, a geophysicist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences who was not involved in the study. “[This] may help us understand … the most dramatic changes in the behavior of the volcano.”

Although Kilauea provides an excellent laboratory for eruption prediction, not all volcanoes have lava lakes that produce such clear seismic signals, Jousset says. Still, the new work, with its many years of observations, opens “a new perspective” on the evolution of volcanic eruptions.

China is preparing to launch a new three-person mission to complete work on its permanent orbiting space station, the China Manned Space Agency said Saturday. The Shenzhou 14 crew will spend six months on the Tiangong station, during which they will oversee the addition of two laboratory modules to join the main Tianhe living space that was launched in April 2021.

Commander Chen Dong and fellow astronauts Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe will assemble the three-module structure joining the existing Tianhe with Wentian and Mengtian, due to arrive in July and October. Another cargo craft, the Tianzhou-3, remains docked with the station.

The arrival of the new modules will "provide more stability, more powerful functions, more complete equipment," said Chen, 43, who was a member of the Shenzhou 11 mission in 2016. Liu, 43, is also a space veteran and was China's first female astronaut to reach space aboard the Shenzhou 9 mission in 2012. Cai, 46, is making his first space trip.

China's space program launched its first astronaut into orbit in 2003, making it only the third country to do so on its own after the former Soviet Union and the U.S. It has landed robot rovers on the moon and placed one on Mars last year. China has also returned lunar samples and officials have discussed a possible crewed mission to the moon.

China's space program is run by the ruling Communist Party's military wing, the People's Liberation Army, prompting the U.S. to exclude it from the International Space Station.

Not sure if this is ball lightning. It appeared late on new years eve. It is not a lantern as I was looking at it and I know what a lantern looks like. This was a ball of white light. Look at how bright the gardens are illuminated at the beginning. Unfortunately, some quality is lost from camera to recording on CCTV hard drive and then conversion from arv file to avi file. However, this quality is quite good compared to watching the original playback on the monitor. For those that don't know, almost all colour cameras revert to black and white mode to enhance night vision clarity. The only problem with that is the CCD becomes super sensitive and is prone to "whiteout" on images. The object was very bright as are the street lights causing over-saturation. You can compare the object with the street lights. As a footnote, the object was on a direct heading for the local airport. The object is approx 3 meters above the hedgerows at the beginning of the video. In the video, I noticed an atmosphere disturbance surrounding the Sphere of light, and considered the distortion as well as the Sphere, to both be a sort of bleed-through effect of that Sphere traveling just outside our visual frequency range.

On May 27 Venus rose as the morning star, near the waning crescent Moon in a predawn sky already full of planets. It was close on the sky to the Moon's crescent and a conjunction of the second and third brightest celestial beacons was enjoyed by skygazers around the world. But seen from locations along a track through southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean the Moon actually passed in front of Venus in a lunar occultation. In this animated gif the 75 percent illuminated disk of Venus approaches and just begins to disappear behind the sunlit southwestern lunar limb. The telescopic frames used to construct it were captured from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean around 4:50am local time, with the Moon and Venus very close to the eastern horizon. At the time Venus was over 180 million kilometers from Reunion Island, compared to a lunar distance of a mere 400 thousand kilometers or so. About 50 minutes later Venus emerged from behind the Moon.

On May 31 tens of parallel meteor streaks were recorded in this 8 degree wide field of view of planet Earth's limb from space. The image is one of a series of 5 minute long observations by the orbiting Yangwang-1 space telescope. It was captured at 03:43 UT, near the peak of the Tau Herculid meteor shower. As predicted, the meteor shower was an active one this year, caused as Earth swept through a relatively dense stream of debris from disintegrating Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, but was lacking bright meteors. Nearly all of the Tau Herculid meteors in the Yangwang-1 image are too faint to be detected by groundbased instruments. But on that date patient earthbound skywatchers under clear skies still enjoyed a memorable showing of the Tau Herculids.

Discovering and tracking asteroids is critical for planetary defense against killer asteroid impacts. The detailed astronomical data associated with it is also useful for providing new insights for astronomers. Helping with this task is a new algorithm called THOR, which has now proven to be capable of finding asteroids. It has been running on the Asteroid Institute’s cloud-based astrodynamics platform for identifying and tracking asteroids.

A novel algorithm developed by University of Washington researchers to discover asteroids in the solar system has proved its mettle. The first candidate asteroids identified by the algorithm — known as Tracklet-less Heliocentric Orbit Recovery, or THOR — have been confirmed by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

The Asteroid Institute, a program of B612 Foundation, has been running THOR on its cloud-based astrodynamics platform — Asteroid Discovery Analysis and Mapping, or ADAM — to identify and track asteroids. With confirmation of these new asteroids by the Minor Planet Center and their addition to its registry, researchers using the Asteroid Institute’s resources can submit thousands of additional new discoveries.

“Discovering and tracking asteroids is crucial to understanding our solar system, enabling development of space and protecting our planet from asteroid impacts,” said Ed Lu, executive director of the Asteroid Institute. “With THOR running on ADAM, any telescope with an archive can now become an asteroid search telescope. We are using the power of massive computation to enable not only more discoveries from existing telescopes, but also to find and track asteroids in historical images of the sky that had gone previously unnoticed because they were never intended for asteroid searches.”

Scientists have grown plants in soil from the Moon, a first in human history and a milestone in lunar and space exploration.

In a new paper published in the journal Communications Biology, University of Florida researchers showed that plants can successfully sprout and grow in lunar soil. Their study also investigated how plants respond biologically to the Moon’s soil, also known as lunar regolith, which is radically different from soil found on Earth.

This work is a first step toward one day growing plants for food and oxygen on the Moon or during space missions. More immediately, this research comes as the Artemis Program plans to return humans to the Moon.

“Artemis will require a better understanding of how to grow plants in space,” said Rob Ferl, one of the study’s authors and a distinguished professor of horticultural sciences in the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).

Even in the early days of lunar exploration, plants played an important role, said Anna-Lisa Paul, also one of the study’s authors and a research professor of horticultural sciences in UF/IFAS. “Plants helped establish that the soil samples brought back from the moon did not harbor pathogens or other unknown components that would harm terrestrial life, but those plants were only dusted with the lunar regolith and were never actually grown in it,” she said.

To the friends who loved Bururu. On Apr. 23 in 2022, Bururu passed away. He suddenly fell down on my bed when he nuzzled up against my head. I rushed to the animal hospital, but he never woke up again. Veterinarian diagnosed the cause of death as a heart attack. Baffling 'UFO' Keeps Appearing in West Bromwich Skies

Residents in West Bromwich, England, have been left baffled by a 'UFO' which is allegedly reoccurring over their homes. The unidentified flying object (UFO) has been videoed over the skies of homes in the Sandwell town.

Video footage, passed to BlackCountryLive, showed a 37-second clip of a bright white light over a home. The ball, or sphere, does not appear to move. A resident who took the video, called Longie Willow, says it is not a star. The light was seen heading towards an old church in West Bromwich, called All Saints, which dates back to the 1400s.

"Twice now we have seen this in the sky. It's not a star and seems to have something trailing behind it has been seen hovering over West Bromwich going towards the old church, on All Saints Way," the resident said.

Video Footage Of UFO Being Chased Down By UK RAF Fighter Jets

On 10 April 2010, footage was broadcast of two fighter jets chasing what appears to be a UFO. The 30-second clip, thought to be shot from a West Midlands service station park, reveals the saucer-shaped craft zipping over the M5, with the two jets in its wake.

Former Ministry of Defence UFO expert Nick Pope told The Sun: "I'm 50/50. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen." He also said, "It could be a new drone – that might explain the military jets.”

SERVION, Switzerland, June 3 (Reuters) - A rare albino Galapagos giant tortoise made its public debut at a Swiss zoo on Friday.

Two of the tortoises were born last month at the Tropiquarium in the western town of Servion as part of a programme to preserve the endangered species. One is black like its parents and the other is albino. Their gender has yet to be determined.

Newly Discovered Neutron Star Might Light the Way for a New Class of Stellar Object

Neutron stars are the collapsed cores of massive stars. Those that emit beams of electromagnetic radiation are classified as pulsars.

The discovery of a neutron star emitting unusual radio signals is rewriting our understanding of these unique star systems.

My colleagues and I (the MeerTRAP team) made the discovery when observing the Vela-X 1 region of the Milky Way about 1,300 light years away from Earth, using the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. We spotted a strange-looking flash or "pulse" that lasted about 300 milliseconds. The flash had some characteristics of a radio-emitting neutron star. But this wasn't like anything we'd seen before.

Intrigued, we scoured through older data from the region in hopes of finding similar pulses. Interestingly, we did identify more such pulses which had previously been missed by our real-time pulse detection system (since we typically only search for pulses lasting some 20-30 milliseconds).

A quick analysis of the times of arrival of the pulses showed them to be repeating about every 76 seconds — whereas most neutron star (opens in new tab) pulses cycle through within a few seconds, or even milliseconds. However, the longest known rotation period for a pulsar before this was 23.5 seconds — which means we might have found a completely new class of radio-emitting object. Our findings are published today in Nature Astronomy.
