With sweeping spiral arms and obscuring dust lanes, the dominant member of the trio, NGC 5566, is enormous, about 150,000 light-years across. Just above it lies smaller, bluish NGC 5569. Near center a third galaxy, NGC 5560, is apparently stretched and distorted by its interaction with massive NGC 5566. The trio is also included in Halton Arp's 1966 Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 286. Of course, such cosmic interactions are now appreciated as part of the evolution of galaxies.

Pre-Code Hollywood was the brief era in the American film industry between the widespread adoption of sound in pictures in 1929[1] and the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code censorship guidelines, popularly known as the "Hays Code", in mid-1934. Although the Code was adopted in 1930, oversight was poor, and it did not become rigorously enforced until July 1, 1934, with the establishment of the Production Code Administration (PCA). Before that date, movie content was restricted more by local laws, negotiations between the Studio Relations Committee (SRC) and the major studios, and popular opinion, than by strict adherence to the Hays Code, which was often ignored by Hollywood filmmakers.

As a result, some films in the late 1920s and early 1930s depicted sexual innuendo, romantic and sexual relationships between white and black people, mild profanity, illegal drug use, promiscuity, prostitution, infidelity, abortion, intense violence, and homosexuality. Nefarious characters were seen to profit from their deeds, in some cases without significant repercussions. For example, gangsters in films such as The Public Enemy, Little Caesar, and Scarface were seen by many as heroic rather than evil. Strong female characters were ubiquitous in such pre-Code films as Female, Baby Face, and Red-Headed Woman. Along with featuring stronger female characters, films examined female subject matters that would not be revisited until decades later in US films.[2][3] Many of Hollywood's biggest stars such as Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Blondell, and Edward G. Robinson got their start in the era. Other stars who excelled during this period, however, like Ruth Chatterton (who decamped to England) and Warren William (the so-called "king of Pre-Code", who died in 1948), would wind up essentially forgotten by the general public within a generation.[4]

The Whirlpool Galaxy is a classic spiral galaxy. At only 30 million light years distant and fully 60 thousand light years across, M51, also known as NGC 5194, is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies in the sky. The featured image is a digital combination of images taken in different colors by the Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope, highlighting many sharp features. Anyone with a good pair of binoculars, however, can see this Whirlpool toward the constellation of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici). M51 is a spiral galaxy of type Sc, and is the dominant member of a whole group of galaxies. Astronomers speculate that M51's spiral structure is primarily due to its gravitational interaction with the smaller galaxy on the image left.

The Race to Reclaim the Night

On dark nights when the Moon is hidden and the clouds are at bay, Kevin Hughes sits at the bottom of his garden and gazes up at a velvety black sky. In contrast to his childhood growing up in London amidst the glare of orange sodium-vapour lights, he usually sees hundreds – and, as his eyes adjust, thousands – of stars studding the night sky.

Hughes lives in Cornwall, a peninsula in the southwestern tip of England that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. His home is in West Penwith, a region renowned for its rugged moors, granite tors and mystic stone circles. Dark skies are a portal to this heritage: "These are the same stars that cavemen in furs and woolly mammoths would look at in the Neolithic [era]," says Hughes.

Although the landscape around them is undergoing change, with new houses, hotels and developments springing up, residents of West Penwith can feel safe in the knowledge that their night skies will likely be protected for generations to come. This is because in December 2021, the region became a Dark Sky Park: an international marker of exceptionally low light pollution.

"One of my favourite singers is Enya, and she released an album called Dark Sky Island," he says. "It's about Sark in the Channel Islands, which has absolutely no street lighting or cars. All the songs on that album are about navigating by the stars."

He began researching the IDA, the International Dark-Sky Association (https://www.darksky.org/our-work/conservation/idsp/parks/), a body that recognises and accredits dark-sky areas worldwide.

Founded in Arizona in 1988, the IDA was set up by two astronomers to protect night environments from skyglow – excessive, artificial light directed upwards into the sky.

Globally, light pollution has increased by at least 49% over 25 years. Amidst mounting concern from ecologists and astronomers in the 1980s, the IDA was the first recognised authority in the dark sky movement, and remains the largest today.

Since granting Flagstaff, Arizona, the prestigious title of the very first International Dark Sky Place in 2001, the body has supported applications in 49 countries, from Japan to Hungary. It now counts more than 190 sites in its dark sky program, protecting over 110,000sq km (42,471sq miles) of dark places around the globe, including dark sky reserves, communities, islands and sanctuaries.

Warning: This sunset might make you sneeze. "The pine is now strongly flowering here in middle Finland, filling the air with allergens," reports Vesa Vauhkonen, who photographed the resulting pollen corona on June 10th.

Note the lumpy rings of light around the setting sun. That's the pollen corona. "Some of the pollen coronas we've been seeing are very impressive, both in size, colors and geometry," says Vauhkonen. "I captured these images just before sunset at the lake of Niinivesi in Rautalampi."

Coronas are rings of light that surround the sun when sunlight is scattered from the outside of small particles. Tiny droplets of water in clouds can make coronas, too, but pollen grains do even better. They make intensely colored rings.

Pollen coronas tend to be elliptical and lumpy because the underlying grains are, too. This photo of pine pollen seen through a microscope shows what's going on.

They look like Mickey Mouse hats; a result of air sacs that help carry them in the wind. These align the grains so that the unruly swarm can scatter light coherently, encoding their individual structures into the shape of the overall corona.

Kilgallen said that if the story is true, it would cause terrible embarrassment for Jack and his plans to have NASA put men on the moon.

November 6, 2018, pilots of a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter encountered three unidentified aerial phenomena during a training flight in Arizona. The video shows three unknown aircraft initially appearing to be flying in a loose triangular formation. The three unknown objects suddenly appear to rotate around each other, as if revolving around an unseen axis, all while maintaining a steady eastward trajectory.

Former U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter pilot Chris Lehto analyzed the footage and concluded, “It is without a doubt anomalous.” According to Lehto, “The tracking rate is exceptionally fast. Even if they are only a mile away, I calculate they go approximately 1.28M. Well past the speed of sound.”

Okmulgee firefighters responded to a call from the Oxford Apartments on the night of Wednesday, May 4, a KOTV reporter said in a post.

A “bizarre lightning strike” appeared to have gone through a vent overhead and then struck the toilet, firefighters told KOTV. Nobody was living in the apartment, but it was scheduled to be rented out the next day.

While firefighters say an act of God obliterated this commode, commenters have suggested other possibilities, including Taco Bell and Chipotle.

Climbing high in the eastern sky before sunrise, magnitude 0.5 Mars currently lies in southeastern Pisces, 13.5° east of Jupiter (a much brighter magnitude –2.3). Through a telescope, Mars’ disk appears 7" across and is 86 percent lit.

Sommersonnenwende 2022 am Großsteingrab Visbeker Braut

Am 21. Juni 2022 um 11:13 Uhr ist Sommersonnenwende. Es ist der längste Tag des Jahres und markiert auch den Astronomischen Sommeranfang auf der Nordhalbkugel. Ich habe dazu ein paar Impressionen vom Sonnenaufgang am Großsteingrab Visbeker Braut bei Wildeshausen eingefangen. Es entstand in der Jungsteinzeit zwischen 3500 und 2800 vor Christus. Auf Grund der Ausrichtung der Anlange auf den Sonnenaufgang zu Mittsommer wird sie mit der Sommersonnenwende in Verbindung gebracht. Möglicherweise handelt es sich bei der Visbeker Braut um eine steinzeitliche Mondwarte.

June 21, 2022 at 11:13 am is summer solstice. It is the longest day of the year and also marks the start of astronomical summer in the northern hemisphere. I captured a few impressions of the sunrise at the large stone grave Visbeker Braut near Wildeshausen. It originated in the Neolithic period between 3500 and 2800 BC. It is associated with the summer solstice due to the facility's orientation towards the midsummer sunrise. It is possible that the Visbeker bride is a Stone Age lunar observatory.

Keeping Objects Levitated by Sound Airborne Despite Interference

A team of researchers at University College London has developed a way to keep objects levitated by sound waves airborne when other objects interfere with the levitation path.

Prior research has shown that it is possible to levitate objects by firing sound waves at them. Because sound waves are nothing more than air particles moving together in a certain way, the object being levitated will fall if an object interferes with the sound waves. In this new effort, the researchers developed new features to address this problem.

To protect the sound waves from interference, the researchers increased the number of speakers used—in their work, they used 256. They also added software to control each of the speakers. The speakers were arranged in a grid and objects were levitated by specifically shaped sound waves. By programming the speakers in specific ways, the team was able to get the system to work together to keep an object above the grid in the air despite interruptions. If some of the sound waves were blocked, other sound waves were redirected to take their place.

Mafe Walker, a Colombian influencer and self-described “interdimensional medium”, recently went on a television program and gave a very peculiar interpretation of an extraterrestrial language that made her go viral on social media.

If you’re a fan of sci-fi TV series like Star Trek or Stargate, you’re familiar with quite a few of Hollywood’s made-up alien languages, but if you’re interested in hearing the real deal look no further than Mafe Walker, a Colombian spiritual guide who claims to be able to “open interdimensional portals and interpret them”, as well as speak an alien tongue on a “galactic frequency” that only her vocal cords can reach.

“Through my electromagnetic field I balance in activation a neutral synchronization in sympathetic and parasympathetic attunement to all your protons, neutrons, electrons of your cells and physical systems and organs,” one of Mafe’s Instagram posts reads.

It’s unclear whether the medium’s ability to do whatever it is she described in the above paragraph is also what helps her speak alien, but one thing that definitely helps is her “stellar galactic DNA”. Whatever it is, her demonstration on Venga La Alegría is quite something to behold.

“This is, without a doubt, the best moment of Mexican television. What a great time to be alive,” one Twitter user commented.

On Sunday morning, June 19th, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral (0427 UT) carrying a Globalstar communications satellite. Within hours, people around the world started seeing strange things in the sky. Sky watchers in New Zealand saw an unusual sight.

"It looked like a beautiful galaxy," says photographer Alasdair Burns of Twinkle Dark Sky Tours on Stewart Island. "It was a very slowly rotating spiral that started small and gradually expanded. Eventually it became so large and faint that it could no longer be seen. There were a group of us on our balcony watching it and none of us had ever seen anything like it."

This spiral was caused by the Falcon 9's upper stage venting leftover fuel just before deorbiting into the Pacific Ocean. The upper stage was probably spinning on its longest axis to stabilize flight orientation--hence the spiral shape.

A red glow stretched across the Milky Way. It looked like the aurora borealis, as shown in this photo from Christopher Hoffman in Saint Mary's County, Maryland.

Between Sunday and Monday, Sunspot AR3038 more than doubled in size, making it several times wider than Earth's diameter, and it's continued to expand in the past 48 hours, according to NASA heliophysicist C. Alex Young.

Sunspots are darkened, cooler areas on the sun's surface with unstable magnetic fields, and they can produce solar flares and coronal mass ejections of charged particles and plasma. These flares and ejections occasionally cause chaos for electrical and radio communications systems here on Earth.

Prudish NASA has admitted it may have to study sex in space if humanity is ever going to make it to other planets.

A growing number of scientists argue it is essential for human survival on long journeys, or moving to Mars as Elon Musk hopes to do by 2050. Its something the space agency has long shied away from, so we’re completely in the dark about how it might work.

“No research has explored intimate relationships, nor the human experience of sexual functions and wellbeing, in space or space analogs, or how any of this can affect crew performance,” as per Simon Dubé, a psychologist from Concordia University.

After years of avoiding the subject, NASA seems a little more open to the idea but warned it is “not currently seeking proposals or considering a dedicated field or project office on this topic”.

“We are primarily concerned with ensuring crew members’ health and safety in space for long periods of time,” a NASA rep said.

Cosmonaut Valery Polyakov spent a staggering 14 months in space in the 90s. The Russian adventurer reportedly grew close with fellow astronaut Elena Kondakova during their time together on the Mir space station.

But the pair and Kremlin officials furiously denied the claims that they had stripped off and bonked for all-mankind in the cramped cabin.

APOD founders Jerry Bonnell, working at the University of Maryland, College Park and Goddard, and Robert Nemiroff, now at Michigan Technological University, hit on the idea while brainstorming how they might contribute to the growing web.

“We realized NASA had an incredible archive of images from astronomy and solar system exploration missions,” explained Bonnell. “We started with those but invited basically anyone with a camera to contribute. The individual amateur contributions really took off and are a mainstay of APOD after all these years. Posting one astronomy picture a day and a simple explanation really became a labor of love.”

Despite its massive bulk, little is known about this species of stingray's habits and behavior in the wild. Scientists tagged and released the record-breaker in order to learn more about its migration patterns and preferred habitats.

The flapjack-shaped find has now secured the status of the giant freshwater stingray as the largest known fish in the world, nudging out the Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas), the largest of which was a 646-pound (293 kg) specimen caught in Thailand in 2005.

It was caught on June 13 by a fisher named Moul Thun in the Stung Treng province in northeastern Cambodia, according to NBC. The next morning, Thun called in researchers from the conservation organization Wonders of Mekong, which has been working to record and protect giant stingrays in the waterway.

This is the third giant stingray catch-and-release of the last two months, according to NBC. All three stingrays, including a 397-pounder (180 kg) caught in May, were female, raising the possibility that this stretch of river might be a nursery where stingrays go to lay eggs and raise young.

Wonders of Mekong pays fishers market price for their released catches. The researchers also tagged this stingray with an acoustic transmitter that will help the scientists keep tabs on the monster fish for a full year.

Since 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover has been exploring the Gale Crater for clues about Mars’ past and possible evidence that it once supported life. For the past year, this search has centered on the lower levels of Mount Sharp, a transitional zone between a clay-rich region and one filled with sulfates (a type of mineral salt).

These regions can offer insight into Mars’ warm, watery past, but the transition zone between them is also of scientific value. In short, the study of this region may provide a record of the major climatic shift that took place billions of years ago on Mars.

For example, this region has unique geological features that include clay minerals that appear as flaky layers of sedimentary rock. One in particular, “The Prow,” was recently imaged by Curiosity and had the mission science teams buzzing. These features formed when water still flowed into the Gale Crater, depositing sediment at the base of Mount Sharp. Higher on the mountain, the hill was likely covered in wind-swept dunes that hardened into rock over time. In between them is where the flaky layers formed, possibly as a result of small ponds or streams that wove them among the dunes.

A Huge Comet Is Approaching Earth

For the past 3 million years, Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) has been falling toward the sun, a long, slow journey from the outer solar system. Finally, it's here. Michael Jaeger photographed it on June 25th from Martinsberg, Austria. The comet was about 9th magnitude. "Comet K2" caused a sensation when it was discovered in 2017. At first, it appeared to be one of the biggest comets in modern history, with a nucleus as much as 160 km wide. Hubble Space Telescope observations have since downsized the comet to 18 km. That is still big (typical comet nuclei measure 1 to 3 km).

Planetary scientists are eager to bring Red Planet rocks, soil and even air to Earth, but critics fear the risk of contaminating our world’s biosphere.

Less than a decade from now, a spacecraft from Mars may swing by Earth to drop off precious cargo: samples of the Red Planet’s rocks, soil and even air to be scoured for signs of alien life by a small army of researchers right here on our terra firma. Orchestrated by NASA and the European Space Agency, this fast-paced, multibillion-dollar enterprise, formally known as the Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign, is the closest thing to a holy grail that planetary scientists have ever pursued.

In many respects, MSR is already well underway: NASA’s Perseverance rover is wheeling around an ancient river delta in Mars’s Jezero Crater, gathering choice specimens of potential astrobiological interest for future pick-up by a “fetch rover.” Then there’s the design and testing of the Mars Ascent Vehicle for lifting those retrieved samples into orbit for subsequent ferrying to Earth that is proceeding apace. But one crucial aspect of the project remains troublingly unresolved: How exactly should the returned samples be handled and at what cost, given the potential risk of somehow contaminating Earth’s biosphere with imported Martian bugs?

An international team of researchers has developed a fast and economical method of converting methane, commonly called natural gas, into liquid methanol at ambient temperature and pressure. The approach uses visible light to drive the conversion in a continuous flow across a photocatalytic material. The research was led by scientists at the University of Manchester.

Naturally occurring methane is a plentiful and valuable fuel, used for stovetops, ovens, furnaces, water heaters, kilns, automobiles, and turbines. However, methane is flammable and combustible and can also be dangerous due to the difficulty of extracting, transporting, and storing it.

Methane gas is also a potent greenhouse gas, making it harmful to the environment when it is released or leaks into the atmosphere. Leading sources of atmospheric methane include fossil fuel production and use, rotting or burning biomass such as forest fires, agricultural waste products, landfills, melting permafrost, and cattle.

Excess methane is commonly burned off, or flared, to reduce its environmental impact. However, this combustion process still produces carbon dioxide, which itself is a greenhouse gas.

Industry has long sought an economical and efficient way to convert methane into methanol, a highly marketable and versatile feedstock used to make a variety of consumer and industrial products. Not only would this help to reduce methane emissions, but it would also provide an economic incentive to do so.

Methanol is a more versatile carbon source than methane and is an easily transportable liquid. It can be used to make thousands of products such as solvents, antifreeze, and acrylic plastics; synthetic fabrics and fibers; adhesives, paint, and plywood; and chemical agents used in pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals. The conversion of methane into a high-value fuel such as methanol is also becoming more attractive as worldwide petroleum reserves dwindle.

Glancing Blow CME Possible on July 4 - Solar Update

Starting around 28/22:00 UTC an eruptive filament was observed inAIA/SDO 304 imagery near center disk. Available SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery did not suggest the bulk of the eruptive material escaped the corona. However, later arriving NASA STEREO A COR2 data shows a faint slow CME on the Earth side of the Sun. The bulk of the material is on a trajectory north of Earth. Model runs suggest weak impacts on 4 July.

I wanted to convey to you my views on our extra-terrestrial visitors popularly referred to as "UFO's", and suggest what might be done to properly deal with them. I believe that these extra-terrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets, which obviously are a little more technically advanced than we are here on earth. I feel that we need to have a top level, coordinated program to scientifically collect and analyze data from all over earth concerning any type of encounter, and to determine how best to interface with these visitors in a friendly fashion.

We my first have to show them that we have learned to resolve our problems by peaceful means, rather than warfare, before we are accepted as fully qualified universal team members. This acceptance would have tremendous possibilities of advancing our world in all areas. Certainly then it would seem that the UN has a vested interest in handling this subject properly and expeditiously.

I should point out that I am not an experienced UFO professional researcher. I have not yet had the privilege of flying a UFO, nor of meeting the crew of one. I do feel that I am somewhat qualified to discuss them since I have been into the fringes of the vast areas in which they travel. Also, I did have occasion in 1951 to have two days of observation of many flights of them, of different sizes, flying in fighter formation, generally from east to west over Europe. They were at a higher altitude than we could reach with our jet fighters of that time.

I would also like to point out that most astronauts are very reluctant to even discuss UFO's due to the great numbers of people who have indiscriminately sold fake stories and forged documents abusing their names and reputations without hesitation. Those few astronauts who have continued to have a participation in the UFO field have had to do so very cautiously. There are several of us who do believe in UFO's and who have had occasion to see a UFO on the ground, or from an airplane. There was only one occasion from space which may have been a UFO.

If the UN agrees to pursue this project, and to lend their credibility to it, perhaps many more well qualified people will agree to step forth and provide help and information.

Last weekend I had a rare opportunity to fly as a passenger in the back of Zero G Corporation's 727-227, which is their modified aircraft used to provide microgravity environments for science experiments, astronaut training, and of course FUN.

When the aircraft isn't providing its capabilities to NASA and other entities, they're travelling around the USA offering members of the public the chance to experience weightlessness. These trajectories are flown entirely by hand with specialized instrumentation, and a rubber ducky for guidance.

Lake Hillier, located on Middle Island, Western Australia, definitely looks like it belongs on another planet. The stark contrast between the pink lake, dark blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the luscious green forest are remarkable. Scientists are not 100% sure how the lake gets its rosy pink hue. The most likely suspect is the Dunaliella salina microalgae found in the lake, which produce carotenoids — a red pigment. But halophilic "salt-loving" bacteria in the salt crusts may also play a role. It has also been suggested that a reaction between the salt and sodium bicarbonate could be altering the color of the lake. The mysterious salmon-pink lake is approximately 2000 feet (600 m) long and 820 ft (250 m) wide.

This Week in Volcano News: Activity at 4 Alaskan Volcanoes, San Cristobal Erupts

A 75-kilometer stretch of mountain road in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been dubbed a car sick person’s worst nightmare for its hundreds of hairpin turns.

Known as Pamir Plateau Sky road or the Panlong Ancient Road, the winding road traversing the Kunlun Mountains of Xinjiang is one of the most visually impressive roads in the world. Seen from above, it looks like a giant grey dragon slithering through the Kashgar region of the Uygur Autonomous Region in China.

It officially opened in July of 2019 to facilitate the passage through the Kunlun Mountains for the region’s farmers, but soon became a tourist attraction for driving enthusiasts wanting to test their skills. With an alleged 600 hairpin turns, this road isn’t for the faint of heart.

Meet the Scorpion’s Stinger Stars, Shaula and Lesath

The zodiacal constellation Scorpius the Scorpion is one of the few constellations that looks like its name, as it is a graceful, J-shaped pattern of stars resembling a real scorpion’s curved tail. At the end of this graceful line of stars are two stars noticeable for their nearness to each other. Sometimes called the Cat's Eyes, they are Shaula and Lesath, which represent the Scorpion’s Stinger stars.

The best time to see Scorpius and its Stinger stars in the evening sky is during the Northern Hemisphere summer and early autumn. Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, these stars are a feature of winter and spring.

Shaula is the second brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, after Antares. Plus, Shaula is also the 24th brightest star in the sky. But it’s hard to think of Shaula without Lesath. These two stars are very noticeable on the sky’s dome, glittering together, brighter than most other stars, and conspicuously located in an easy-to-see constellation.

Shaula is an Arabic name meaning the Scorpion’s Stinger. Lesath’s name is the final result of a long and convoluted history, initially derived from a Greek word meaning a (foggy) conglomeration.

Whilst scrolling through a 249 page FBI document called "Tesla Pages", I found a brief excerpt from an old 1955 book, detailing the life and times of Nikola Tesla. That excerpt is the origin of this video.

Around the one minute mark, Alfred claims that the governments swift action to break open Tesla's private safe after his death and confiscate the belongings was "justified" as you could never be sure about Tesla, one of the strangest men who ever lived. Although I do not personally agree with this statement, I included it in the video to stay true to the document. The rest of the 200+pages mostly consisted of letters written to the FBI, asking for Tesla's classified patents and the contents of his safe to be released under the Freedom of Information Act, to which the FBI would respond in every letter:

"In response to your inquiry, the effects of Dr Nikola Tesla were impounded , after his death, by the Office of Alien Property of the Department of Justice and not by the FBI. Since we did not participate in the handling of Dr Tesla's effects, I am unable to furnish the information you desire.

The electric-blue rivers ejected from Kawah Ijen volcano in eastern Java look like something from another world. Contrary to what is commonly reported, the lava itself is not blue. The striking color is a result of volcanic sulfur emissions. The volcano emits sulfurous gases that ignite when they meet Earth's oxygen-rich atmosphere and burn with a rich blue flame. When the sulfurous gas condenses, it produces the infamous blue rivers that illuminate the volcanic landscape at night.

What do you get if you cross human error and geothermal pressure? A 12-ft-tall (3.5 meters) alien-looking structure.

Fly Geyser is a technicolor geyser situated on Fly Ranch in the middle of the Nevada desert. The structure spews out hot water, creating shallow pools home to hardy thermophilic algae that flourish in moist, hot environments. The geyser was created by accident in 1964 when a geothermal energy company drilled the site in a bid to tap into the hot water below. But the water wasn't hot enough to be useful to the energy company, so the site was sealed up. According to Reno Tahoe, the well was improperly plugged and the scalding hot water pierced through the surface, creating the bizarre three-mound geyser we see today.

In truth, some significant scientific advances have come from historical figures better known for their artistic and literary contributions than their application of the scientific method.

Edgar Allan Poe: Black Holes and Space/Time

Known for his gothic poems and mysterious short stories, Edgar Allan Poe also helped make advances in science.

He wrote a prose poem (similar to an essay) in 1848 titled “Eureka” in which he discussed astronomy and the Universe. Poe was one of the first to suggest the possibility of multiple universes, as well as the existence of black holes. “Eureka” also suggested the idea of space-time, as Poe wrote: “that space and duration are one.”

When “Eureka” was originally published, it was largely ignored, except in Europe. In 1922, Russian mathematician Alexander Friedmann (a fan of Poe’s) used the ideas in “Eureka” to help explain how our Universe works. Poe was never credited in Friedman’s work. While “Eureka” also contained many inaccurate scientific ideas (such as pseudo-science), it provided the catalyst for many other scientists to think about our Universe.

Children’s writer Beatrix Potter’s work in science has only recently come to light. Known for her children’s books, like The Tales of Peter Rabbit, Potter was fascinated with the natural flora of England.

She worked on scientific illustrations of mushrooms and other fungi and even wrote a scientific paper on mushroom reproduction (called sporing) in 1897. Potter tried to join the famous Linnean Society but was rejected because she was a woman. She wasn’t even allowed to present her paper to the Society. After her death, the Linnean Society published an apology for the blatant discrimination against her. Potter’s scientific illustrations can still be found in museums, as they have inspired other botanists to find new species and uncover more secrets about plant life.

John Steinbeck: Sea Life Species

Depicting the struggles of American life during the Great Depression, John Steinbeck’s works are considered classics. From The Grapes of Wrath to Of Mice and Men, most of Steinbeck’s work is part of a typical high school curriculum. While writing, Steinbeck found time to also help contribute to science, via his friendship with marine biologist Ed Ricketts.

Based in Monterey, California, Ricketts’ laboratory focused on sea life in the Gulf of California. In 1940, Ricketts and Steinbeck embarked on a sailing trip around the Gulf. Later titled Log from the Sea of Cortez, Steinbeck’s nonfiction book recounted the trip, where the men cataloged over 480 species of marine invertebrates.

After the book was published, an additional 40 species were named and described, inspired by Steinbeck’s work.

It is difficult to hide a galaxy behind a cluster of galaxies. The closer cluster's gravity will act like a huge lens, pulling images of the distant galaxy around the sides and greatly distorting them.

This is just the case observed in the recently re-processed image from the Hubble Space Telescope. The cluster GAL-CLUS-022058c is composed of many galaxies and is lensing the image of a yellow-red background galaxy into arcs seen around the image center. Dubbed a molten Einstein ring for its unusual shape, four images of the same background galaxy have been identified. Typically, a foreground galaxy cluster can only create such smooth arcs if most of its mass is smoothly distributed -- and therefore not concentrated in the cluster galaxies visible. Analyzing the positions of these gravitational arcs gives astronomers a method to estimate the dark matter distribution in galaxy clusters, as well as infer when the stars in these early galaxies began to form.

Arcing above the eastern horizon after the series of exposures began, a waning crescent Moon left the brightest streak and watery reflection. On that date the planets of the Solar System were also lined up along the ecliptic and left their own trails before sunrise. Saturn was first to rise on that morning and the ringed planet's trail starts close to the top right edge, almost out of the frame. Innermost planet Mercury rose only just before the Sun though. It left the shortest trail, visible against the twilight near the horizon at the far left. Uranus and Neptune are faint and hard to find, but mingled with the star trails.

These structures are irregular tubes of magnetism holding masses of plasma above the surface of the sun. They look dark because they are cooler than the underlying star. Relatively cooler. If you could pull one off the sun and hold it up in the night sky, it would glow more brightly than a full Moon.

It is no exaggeration to say they are huge. "It's crazy," says astrophotographer Martin Wise of Trenton, Florida. "This one is more than one light-second long." Wise inserted a picture of Earth to show how the filament dwarfs our planet.

In May of 2022, after decades of remaining silent, Dolly Safran went public with her experiences as a lifelong fully conscious UFO contactee. The Sun is a very interesting big buddy. I don’t get your swimming Tiger though, at first I thought it was just a head sitting on the ground lol.

I am a fan of Dr. Pierre-Marie Robitaille and his different ideas, especially his ideas about the Sun. I had a bit of science training, so much of his reasoning seems valid to me. Besides his YT vids, I recommend to hardcore nerds this paper, Forty Lines of Evidence, about how it might not be a ball of gas.

A new report says there is now a six to 10 percent chance space junk will seriously injure or kill someone on Earth in the next few years. The main risk of injury or death comes from abandoned stages of rockets left in orbit from launches, a practice that is expected to increase as more countries and companies launch objects into space. The researchers behind the study say governments could take measures to limit or even remove this risk, but may be resistant to the costs involved.

Spacecraft that enter, or even travel through, low earth orbit are at constant risk of colliding with space junk. Crew members now regularly maneuver the International Space Station to avoid such collisions, and officials say the problem will only worsen. But what about space junk colliding with something (or someone) here on Earth?

Study lead author Dr. Michael Byers, a professor in the University of British Columbia's department of political science, says that his team’s analysis only addresses the chances of an individual getting struck by debris on the ground and not other “worst-case scenarios” like a chunk of debris striking an airplane in flight. And according to researchers, a lot of this debris may be relatively large.

“While some have the mass of an average washing machine, others have masses of up to 20 tonnes,” says co-author Ewan Wright, a doctoral student in interdisciplinary studies. “This affects how much material burns up in the atmosphere.”

The study authors concede that while the risk is very low, debris from space slamming into the Earth does happen, even substantial debris. For example, they point to a 2020 incident where a 12-meter long pipe from a Long March 5B rocket crashed into a village in the Ivory Coast, “causing extensive damage to buildings.”

After exploring Mars for more than a year, China’s Tianwen-1 space probe has successfully taken images covering the entire Red Planet, China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) announced on June 29. Tianwen-1, which translates to “quest for heavenly truth”, consists of six separate spacecraft: an orbiter, two deployable cameras, lander, remote camera, and Zhurong rover. The images in question were taken by the orbiter while circling Mars 1,344 times, capturing images of the Red Planet from every angle while Zhurong explored the surface. CNSA said the probe has now completed all of its tasks, which included taking medium-resolution images covering the entire planet.

Mysterious Repeating Fast Radio Burst Has ‘Heartbeat’ Pattern

A fast radio burst (FRB) dubbed FRB 20191221A persists for up to three seconds, about 1,000 times longer than the average FRB; within this window, astronomers from the CHIME/FRB Collaboration detected bursts that repeat every 217 ms in a clear periodic pattern, similar to a beating heart.

FRBs are millisecond-duration flashes of radio waves that are visible at distances of billions of light years and exhibit the characteristic dispersion sweep of radio pulsars.

The origin of FRBs are unknown.

Theories range from highly magnetized neutron stars, blasted by gas streams near to a supermassive black hole, to suggestions that the burst properties are consistent with signatures of technology developed by an advanced civilization.

The vast majority of FRBs observed to date are one-off; but recently, astronomers discovered FRB 180916.J0158+65 — the first periodic FRB that appeared to emit a regular pattern of radio waves. That signal consisted of a four-day window of random bursts that then repeated every 16 days.

“FRB 20191221A was unusual,” said Dr. Daniele Michilli, an astronomer at MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. “Not only was it very long, lasting about three seconds, but there were periodic peaks that were remarkably precise, emitting every fraction of a second like a heartbeat.”

“This is the first time the signal itself is periodic.”

Yes, I tend to agree with the CGI specialist: I've always thought that looks extraordinarily authentic.

The most interesting thing about any claimed ET depictions (contactee and abductee reports, etc etc) is that they all look like us.

Meaning: they have one head (featuring two eyes and one mouth), one torso, two arms with 4, 5, or 6 fingers, and two legs. If one thinks about it, that's just astonishingly coincidental. Some of the ETs seem more similar to us than chimps and gorillas.

If these are honestly reported, and I think most of them are, then the implications couldn't be more important: that we all come from some common ancestor, or possibly some common engineer-creator.

The United States and Russia said Friday they would renew flights together to the International Space Station, preserving one of the last areas of cooperation amid Western attempts to isolate Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine.

"To ensure continued safe operations of the International Space Station, protect the lives of astronauts and ensure continuous US presence in space, NASA will resume integrated crews on US crew spacecraft and the Russian Soyuz," the US space agency said in a statement.

NASA said that astronaut Frank Rubio would fly with two Russian cosmonauts on a Soyuz rocket scheduled to launch on September 21 from Kazakhstan, with another astronaut, Loral O'Hara, taking another mission in early 2023.

In a first, Russian cosmonauts will join NASA astronauts on SpaceX's new Crew-5 which will launch in September from Florida with a Japanese astronaut also on the mission. Another joint mission on the SpaceX Crew-6 will fly out in early 2023, NASA said.

One of the recent developments in ionospheric research was the introduction of a subauroralspectacle called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). Although STEVE has been documented by amateur night sky watchers for decades, it is an exciting new upper atmosphericphenomenon for the scientific community. Observedfirst by amateur auroral photographers, STEVEappeared as a narrow luminous structure across the night sky. Currently, only one scientific study has focusedon STEVE, revealing that it corresponds to a narrow (tens of kilometers in north-south extent) and long(thousands of kilometers in east-west direction) structure located in the subauroral region. An important and fundamental question that arises from this study is the origin of STEVE; more specifically, does STEVE correspond to a new ionospheric phenomenon or is it due to particle precipitation? In this letter, we analyze a STEVE event on 28 March 2008 observed by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) ground-based All-Sky Imagers and a Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES). ThePOES-17 satellite crossed STEVE at the center of the All-Sky Imager field-of-view, allowing us to collect particle data simultaneously. These concurrent measurements show that STEVE might not be associated with particle precipitation (electrons or ions). Therefore, this event suggests that STEVE’s skyglow (which we defined to be unrelated to aurora or airglow) could be generated in the ionosphere.

Plain Language Summary:
Recently, the scientific community stumbled upon a rare atmospheric phenomenon called Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement (STEVE) that has been welldocumented by amateur auroral photographers for decades. STEVE appears across the night sky as anextremely narrow ribbon of vibrant purple and white hues. In this letter, we address an importantfundamental question: Is STEVE caused by particle precipitation like aurora or is it produced by a newionospheric phenomenon? We analyzed a STEVE event using a network of ground-based All-Sky Imagersacross Canada and energetic particle detectors on one of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’sPolar Orbiting Environmental Satellites. Our results verify that this STEVE event is clearly distinct from theaurora since it is characterized by the absence of particle precipitation. Interestingly, its skyglow could begenerated by a new and fundamentally different mechanism in the ionosphere.“

Having half the chromosomes than worker bees, male honey bees are apparently more susceptible to pesticides and severe heat.

The extremely hot weather in the UK poses a particular problem for the local population of honey bees, whose males now have to deal with the prospect of a rather gruesome death.

According to The Daily Star, many male honey bees in Britain are expected to meet their end as temperatures breached 40 degrees Celsius this week, with the creatures winding up explosively ejaculating and dying when subjected to extreme heat.

“We don’t know exactly why but drones ejaculate when they get too stressed,” explained Dr. Alison McAfee, postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia’s Michael Smith Laboratories. “Ejaculation kills them because it basically eviscerates their abdomen. This happens during natural mating too – drone honey bees always die after mating.”

If a significant number of male honey bees end up perishing amid the summer heat, it may pose a problem for the population of the insects in the country, as queens do enjoy the company of a male from time to time.

"John R. Stockwell (born 1937) is a former CIA officer who became a critic of United States government policies after serving seven tours of duty over thirteen years. Having managed American involvement in the Angolan Civil War as Chief of the Angola Task Force during its 1975 covert operations, he resigned and wrote the best-selling In Search of Enemies.

Born in Angleton, Texas, Stockwell's Presbyterian father moved the family to the Belgian Congo when he was posted there to provide engineering assistance. Stockwell attended school in Lubondai before studying in the Plan II Honors program at the University of Texas.

As a Marine, Stockwell was a CIA paramilitary intelligence case officer in three wars: the Congo Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the Angolan War of Independence. His military rank is Major. Finding (and pronouncing) Dschubba

Delta Scorpii – aka Dschubba – is easy to spot as the middle star in the “forehead” or Crown of the Scorpion, Scorpius. And it’s an extremely interesting star – well worth watching – unpredictably variable in a way that you can watch with your eyes alone.

On these northern summer evenings, we in the Northern Hemisphere see Scorpius and Delta Scorpii (Dschubba) in our southern sky. For Southern Hemisphere viewers, they are closer to overhead. Scorpius is an easy constellation to find, because of its curved “tail” of stars. And the brightest star in Scorpius, Antares, will catch your eyes. To the west of Antares, you’ll find a little arc of three stars. They are tiny, but noticeable. Dschubba, the middle star, is usually the brightest of the three.

How do you pronounce Dschubba correctly? The “D” is silent, a foreign concept to the English language. So now we are left with “schubba”. It is two syllables, emphasizing the first: SCHUB ba. You can also simply call the star Delta Scorpii.

Dschubba is a type B0 star, meaning it is hot, about 22,000 Kelvin, or four times hotter than our sun, with 13 times more mass. It’s 5 times larger than our sun, and 14,000 times brighter.

This is the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. It is a plot of stars’ luminosities (true brightness) against their color. You’ll see the high-temperature blue-white stars on the left side of the diagram. You’ll see the low-temperature red stars on the right side. Near the top of the heap, Delta Scorpii, identified in the chart with an “X”, is larger, hotter, more massive, and shines far brighter than our sun. It lives among the giants.
