The occupant report came from Miss Doreen Kendall, who worked the night shift at Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan. She was on the second floor and said the object, which she described as circular, was just above the children’s ward, which it on the third floor. It had a silver, bowl-shaped bottom and a domed top made of some sort of clear glass or plastic that was lit up from the inside, allowing her to see into it. There were lights around it “like a necklace.”

She said she saw two figures inside that were male-like, one behind the other. She described them this way: “They looked like fine, tall, well-built men. They were dressed in tight-fitting suits of the same (dark) material that covered their heads, but their hands were bare and I noticed how human they looked. Their flesh seemed just like ours.”

Yikes. Its usually a handful. Or maybe the ET's heard about the Russians pulling out of the ISS and are punishing us.

Every night, a network of NASA all-sky cameras scans the skies above the United States for meteoritic fireballs. Automated software maintained by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office calculates their orbits, velocity, penetration depth in Earth's atmosphere and many other characteristics. On July 26, 2022, the network reported 29 fireballs. (24 sporadics, 2 alpha Capricornids, 2 southern Delta Aquarids, 1 Perseid)

In this diagram of the inner solar system, all of the fireball orbits intersect at a single point--Earth. The orbits are color-coded by velocity, from slow (red) to fast (blue).

Many details of Saturn appear clearly in infrared light. Bands of clouds show great structure, including long stretching storms. Also quite striking in infrared is the unusual hexagonal cloud pattern surrounding Saturn's North Pole. Each side of the dark hexagon spans roughly the width of our Earth. The hexagon's existence was not predicted, and its origin and likely stability remains a topic of research. Saturn's famous rings circle the planet and cast shadows below the equator. The featured image was taken by the robotic Cassini spacecraft in 2014 in several infrared colors. In 2017 September, the Cassini mission was brought to a dramatic conclusion when the spacecraft was directed to dive into the ringed giant.

Can you find the Moon? This usually simple task can be quite difficult. Even though the Moon is above your horizon half of the time, its phase can be anything from crescent to full. The featured image was taken in late May from Sant Martí d'Empúries, Spain, over the Mediterranean Sea in the early morning. One reason you can't find this moon is because it is very near to its new phase, when very little of the half illuminated by the Sun is visible to the Earth. Another reason is because this moon is near the horizon and so seen through a long path of Earth's atmosphere -- a path which dims the already faint crescent. Any crescent moon is only visible near the direction the Sun, and so only locatable near sunrise or sunset. The Moon runs through all of its phases in a month (moon-th), and this month the thinnest sliver of a crescent -- a new moon -- will occur in two days.

Russia to Leave International Space Station 'After 2024'

Moscow said Tuesday it was leaving the International Space Station "after 2024" amid tensions with the West, in a move analysts warned could lead to a halt of Russian-crewed flights. The confirmation of the long-mooted move comes as ties unravel between the Kremlin and the West over Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine and several rounds of devastating sanctions against Russia, including its space sector.

Space experts said Russia's departure from the International Space Station would seriously affect the country's space sector and deal a significant blow to its programme of crewed flights, a major source of Russian pride.

"Of course, we will fulfill all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made," Yury Borisov, the new head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, told President Vladimir Putin, according to a Kremlin account of their meeting.

"I think that by this time we will start putting together a Russian orbital station," Borisov added, calling it the domestic space programme's main "priority".

The ISS is due to be retired after 2024 anyway, although US space agency NASA says it can remain operational until at least 2030.

Space and humans are not a perfect mix. Scientists are continually discovering new kinds of health risks associated with space, related to how factors like microgravity and cosmic radiation affect our bones, organs, and more.

But prolonged exposure to the environment of space isn't just a concern for our bodies. What about our minds?

The psychological effects of extreme isolation and confinement during long-term space travel and missions to other planets still represent a big unknown.

If we're ever going to successfully travel through space and even colonize other worlds, we need to understand much more about what happens to people stuck in unforgiving places for long periods, while very, very far from home.

As it happens, there is a scientific name for these hostile habitats: isolated, confined, extreme (ICE) environments; there is even a field of research in which scientists probe the psychological impacts of living in conditions analogous to long jaunts in space.

Of all the places on Earth to run such experiments, one in particular stands out.

"The Antarctic is regarded as an ideal analog for space because its extreme environment is characterized by numerous stressors that mirror those present during long-duration space exploration," a team of researchers led by psychologist Candice Alfano from the University of Houston explained in a 2021 study.

"In addition to small crews and limited communication during Antarctic winter months, the environment offers little sensory stimulation, and extended periods of darkness and harsh weather conditions restrict outdoor activity. Evacuation is difficult if not impossible."

Solar Storm From Hole in the Sun to Hit Earth Wednesday (Aug. 3)

High-speed solar winds from a "hole" in the sun's atmosphere are set to hit Earth's magnetic field on Wednesday (Aug 3.), triggering a minor G-1 geomagnetic storm.

Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) made the prediction after observing that "gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere."

The storm produced by this debris will be weak. As a G1 geomagnetic storm, it has the potential to cause minor fluctuations in power grids and impact some satellite functions — including those for mobile devices and GPS systems. However, it will also bring the aurora as far south as Michigan and Maine.

Why does Saturn appear so big? It doesn't -- what is pictured are foreground clouds on Earth crossing in front of the Moon. The Moon shows a slight crescent phase with most of its surface visible by reflected Earthlight known as ashen glow. The Sun directly illuminates the brightly lit lunar crescent from the bottom, which means that the Sun must be below the horizon and so the image was taken before sunrise. This double take-inducing picture was captured on 2019 December 24, two days before the Moon slid in front of the Sun to create a solar eclipse. In the foreground, lights from small Guatemalan towns are visible behind the huge volcano Pacaya.

Without warning, a gigantic triangular-shaped craft hovered overhead and then landed in front of them. To Marty's amazement, a large glowing egg-shaped craft dropped from the sky and landed in front of them. Moments later, a human-looking man stepped out and invited them both onboard. Marty's grandfather explained that it was time for Marty to learn about who his grandfather really was. So began an incredible onboard encounter during which Marty was given a tour of the craft and learned many secrets about the people inside it. It was the first of several other encounters that finally answered some of the strange mysteries surrounding his unusual grandfather.

How big does a group need to be for "birthday twins" to exist?

Here's a fun brain teaser: How large does a random group of people have to be for there to be a 50% chance that at least two of the people will share a birthday? The answer is 23, which surprises many people. How is this possible?

When pondering this question, known as the "birthday problem" or the "birthday paradox" in statistics, many people intuitively guess 183, since that is half of all possible birthdays, given how there are generally 365 days in a year. Unfortunately, intuition often fares poorly at this kind of statistical problem.

"I love these types of problems because they illustrate how humans are generally not good with probabilities, leading them to make incorrect decisions or draw bad conclusions," said Jim Frost, a statistician and regular columnist for the American Society of Quality's Statistics Digest. "Additionally, they show how beneficial mathematics can be at improving our lives."

If you start with a group of two people, the chance the first person does not share a birthday with the second is 364/365. As such, the likelihood they share a birthday is 1 minus (364/365), or a probability of about 0.27%.

If you assume a group of three people, the first two people cover two dates. This means the chance the third person does not share a birthday with the other two is 363/365. As such, the likelihood they all share a birthday is 1 minus the product of (364/365) times (363/365), or a probability of about 0.82%.

The more people in a group, the greater the chances that at least a pair of people will share a birthday. With 23 people, there is a 50.73% chance, Frost noted. With 57 people, there is a probability of 99%.

"I have received messages from college statistics professors who will make a $20 bet about two people sharing a birthday in a particular statistics class," Frost said. "Given the probabilities associated with the birthday problem, he knows that he's practically guaranteed to win. But every semester, the students always take on the bet and lose! Fortunately, he returns the money, and then teaches them how to solve the birthday paradox."

They took samples from 10 locations across a giant seagrass meadow in Shark Bay in 2012 and 2019, but when they sequenced DNA from the samples, they were shocked to find that it was the same plant.

In 1716, English astronomer Edmond Halley noted, "This is but a little Patch, but it shows itself to the naked Eye, when the Sky is serene and the Moon absent." Of course, M13 is now less modestly recognized as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, one of the brightest globular star clusters in the northern sky. Sharp telescopic views like this one reveal the spectacular cluster's hundreds of thousands of stars. At a distance of 25,000 light-years, the cluster stars crowd into a region 150 light-years in diameter. Approaching the cluster core upwards of 100 stars could be contained in a cube just 3 light-years on a side. For comparison, the closest star to the Sun is over 4 light-years away. The remarkable range of brightness recorded in this image follows stars into the dense cluster core. Distant background galaxies in the medium-wide field of view include NGC 6207 at the upper left.

A hidden self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh has been discovered behind one of his paintings, covered by layers of glue and cardboard for more than a century.

The image was found when art conservators took an X-ray of Van Gogh's 1885 "Head of a Peasant Woman" painting ahead of a forthcoming exhibition. They discovered the concealed image at the back of its canvas hidden by a sheet of cardboard, according to a press release from the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS).

The Dutch master often re-used canvases to save money, turning them around to work on the reverse side. The underlying self-portrait is thought to have been made during a key moment in Van Gogh's career, when he was exposed to the work of the French impressionists after moving to Paris.

A trunk with its lid left open. A wooden dishware closet, its shelves caved in. Three-legged accent tables topped by decorative bowls. These latest discoveries by archaeologists are enriching knowledge about middle-class lives in Pompeii before Mount Vesuvius' furious eruption buried the ancient Roman city in volcanic debris.

Pompeii's archaeological park, one of Italy's top tourist attractions, announced the recent finds on Saturday. Its director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said the excavation of rooms in a "domus," or home, first unearthed in 2018 had revealed precious details about the domestic environment of ordinary citizens of the city, which was destroyed in 79 A.D.

In a bedroom, archeologists found the remains of a bed frame with a trace of fabric from the pillow. The kind of bed is identical to three, cot-like beds unearthed last year in a tiny room in another residence that archaeologists believe doubled as a storeroom and sleeping quarters for a family of enslaved inhabitants of Pompeii.

The bedroom findings announced Saturday also included the remains of a wooden trunk with an open lid. Although the weight of beams and ceiling panels that crashed down in the wake of the volcanic explosion heavily damaged the trunk, among the objects found inside was an oil lamp decorated with a bas relief depicting the ancient Greek deity Zeus being transformed into an eagle. Nearby was a small, three-legged round table, similar to the accent tables in vogue today.

Physicists Create Mind-Bending New Phase of Matter With "Extra" Time Dimension

Physicists have created a remarkable, never-before-seen phase of matter by shining a laser pulse sequence inspired by the Fibonacci sequence at atoms inside a quantum computer. Despite there still being only one singular flow of time, the phase has the benefits of two time dimensions, the physicists reported on July 20 in the journal Nature.

The researchers didn't set out with the goal of opening a "portal to an extra time dimension," as Scientific American described the experiment. They simply sought to create a new topological phase of quantum matter, which is essentially a form of quantum matter defined by the dynamic motions of its constituents, rather than their static arrangements.

In order to successfully create the topological phase, and thus the "extra" dimension, the scientists targeted a quantum computer's quantum bits — or qubits — with a quasi-periodic laser pulse based on the Fibonacci sequence. Think quasicrystal.

"It is very exciting to see this unusual phase of matter realized in an actual experiment, especially because the mathematical description is based on a theoretical 'extra' time dimension," said Philipp Dumitrescu, study co-author and research fellow at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Quantum Physics.

This property offers a highly desirable benefit: Information stored in the phase is far more protected against errors than with alternative setups currently used in quantum computers. As a result, the information can exist for far longer without getting garbled, an important milestone for making quantum computing viable.

'STEVE' descends on North America after surprise solar storm

In the dark of Sunday night and Monday morning (Aug. 7 and 8), a surprise solar storm slammed into Earth, showering our planet in a rapid stream of charged particles from the sun. The resulting clash of solar and terrestrial particles in Earth's atmosphere caused stunning auroras to appear at much lower latitudes than usual — and, in southern Canada, triggered a surprise cameo from the mysterious sky phenomenon known as STEVE.

Alan Dyer, an astronomy writer and photographer based in southern Alberta, Canada, caught the wispy ribbons of green and violet light on camera as they shot through the sky.

As Dyer noted, the strange sky glow called STEVE was first described by citizen scientists and aurora hunters in northern Canada in 2017. STEVE is typically composed of an enormous ribbon of purplish light, which can hang in the sky for an hour or more, accompanied by a "picket fence" of green light that usually disappears within a few minutes.

Japanese researchers say they have spotted a “super earth” exoplanet orbiting within its host star’s habitable zone just 37 light years from Earth, according to recent findings detailed in a new research paper.

While zipping around the red-dwarf star M4.5 dwarf Ross 508, the newly discovered exoplanet appears to have an elliptical path that takes it in and out of the star’s habitable zone or the distance from its host star where liquid water could exist on the planet’s surface. If confirmed, the relatively close (in astronomical terms) exoplanet offers astrobiologists a brand new target in the search for extraterrestrial life.

With results published in the journal Publications of the National Society of Japan, the discovery was made by researchers from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan using the Subaru Telescope, as well as a new, ultra-sensitive Near Infrared detector specially designed to hunt for exoplanets around red dwarf stars.

If this is real/true, it is my guess that the object is not a ‘rod’, as it appears in the frame-by-frame sequences. IMO, these would be streaks across the/each exposure, and that the object could be a regular looking vessel.

love to challenge myself so I thought why not try for the first time painting with my feet while drawing in a realsitic way + upside down and also one drawing in 3D. This time I made 6 portraits: Bella Poarch, Harry Potter, Billie Eilish, Wonder Woman, Shakira and Angelina Jolie.
It surprised me how much control I was able to have over my feet, something I never realized before. All that time I was drawing while I thought my feet were useless with art and now I discovered they can do way more than I thought! I think if I paint more often with my feet I can really improve. I'm of course way better with painting with hands but painting with feet was so much fun!

Aquila takes it name from the Latin word for “Eagle”. According to classic Greek mythology, Aquila was the eagle that carried the thunderbolts of Zeus. He was also sent to retrieve the Trojan shepherd boy – Ganymede, whom Zeus desired – to become a wine-pourer for the gods. Aquila’s proximity to Aquarius, which represents Ganymede, is one of the reasons why the constellation is so-named.

Though it one of the 48 constellations included by Ptolemy in the Almagest, the first recorded mention of Aquila that still survives come from Eudoxus of Cnidus – a Greek astronomer and student of Plato’s during the 4th century BCE – and Aratus, the didactic poet who wrote of the constellations in the 3rd century BCE.

Several Tampa Bay Devil Rays aren’t exactly enjoying their stay at the historic Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.

The landmark hotel, which was built in 1893, has garnered a reputation for seemingly being haunted by paranormal spirits. And while many Tampa Bay players don’t mind crashing at the eccentric location during their two-game series against the hometown Brewers, others are quite spooked.

Yandy Diaz, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound third baseman, headlines the list of those most afraid of ghosts possibly lurking in the shadows. His teammates did little to ease his concerns, taping a cartoon ghost to the front of Diaz’s locker ahead of Sunday’s game in Detroit alongside the Spanish word cuidado, or “watch out.”

Eyewitness:

I was on my way home when I looked up ahead and say a group of lights hovering over a farm shop near my home. As I got closer to the shop the lights kept the same height but started moving. I have a video of me trying to record what I was seeing as I have never seen lights like these, I have seen planes pass by but none that look like these as these did not flash or blink I even rolled my window down and slowed my vehicle down, weirdly there was no noise. The more I continued driving the more they kept moving still at the same height. As I got home they stopped and kept hovering over the nearest home by mine I took one last picture and went inside, couple minutes later I went outside again and there was nothing.

Vice President Harris, who stretches credulity by chairing the National Space Council, will deliver a speech highlighting the historic importance of NASA's Artemis program, which plans to land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon, a White House official said in an emailed update on Aug. 24.

Harris' presence at the Artemis 1 launch will come just two weeks before the next National Space Council meeting. The group is set to gather on Sept. 9 in part to hammer out a "new rules framework" for commercial space that Harris announced on Aug. 14. (What those rules are exactly is yet to be disclosed.)

"Black Tail" is up first, taking a few seconds to sniff her surroundings before placing her paw on a lever and zooming away. After storming to the finish line, she devours a well-earned Froot Loop hanging on a "treat tree."

Black Tail is one of the University of Richmond's rat drivers -- a group that first dazzled the world with their ability to operate tiny cars back in 2019.

Now, the racing rodents serve as ambassadors for the school's Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory, headed by Professor Kelly Lambert.

"It gets people's attention about how clever and teachable these animals are," explained Lambert, who has to balance her affection for the furry speedsters with the need for scientific detachment -- naming them only by the Sharpie colors that mark their tails.

For Lambert, one of the great failings of modern medicine has been its inability to cure mental illness through drugs, even as pharmaceutical companies have reaped in huge profits.

These pharmaceutical approaches have faced increasing scrutiny since a landmark study published in July questioned the theory that chemical imbalances, especially a lack of serotonin, cause depression.

Far from being a novelty act, these animals are part of a boundary-pushing project exploring the ways in which environmental enrichment sculpts the brain – and could in turn hold potential for solving human mental health challenges ...

I couldn't find a proper location for this video. I heard the Mel's hole story years ago on Coast-to-Coast AM with Art Bell. The resident there ran 80,000 feet of fishing line or 15 miles down the hole and didn't reach the bottom. Supernatural things happen around it and neighbors used it as a dump. Getting to the Bottom of Mel's Hole

On Mel Waters' property in the Manastash Ridge, west of Ellensburg, Washington, there is a hole in the ground that looks like a well -- but it's not a well.

Like the owners of the property before him, Mel used the hole as a trash dump. His neighbors used it too. Garbage, broken appliances, old tires, everything went in the hole.

After a while, Mel started to wonder: why doesn't it fill up? Then he started to notice other strange things about the hole. His dogs wouldn't go near it. It caused his radio picked up strange signals. And it didn't seem to have a bottom.

The Baltimore Ravens are going to have to wing it with their mascot this year.

In a video released by the team, Ravens coach John Harbaugh "announced" Thursday that Poe is out for the season after being injured in a mascot vs. youth football team exhibition.

"Unfortunately, he sustained a serious injury to his drumstick," Harbaugh said in the video, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Poe hurt his left knee during the halftime show of the preseason finale Saturday against the Washington Commanders. In what was supposed to be a friendly game, Poe was flushed out of the pocket and chased down from behind by a teenage player, who pushed the team's longtime mascot to the ground. Even though Poe immediately clutched his left leg when he fell to the ground, it took about five minutes before a cart came out for him because many thought it was part of the act.

"We're going to turn over every stone, scour everywhere and find his replacement," Harbaugh said. "We're going to get right into evaluating our options and see where we go next."

Sources close to the team's banged-up bird say the Ravens could turn to Edgar and Allan, two mascots let go by the team earlier in a salary-cap crunch.

Also in the field of view is microquasar Cygnus X-1, one of the strongest X-ray sources in planet Earth's sky. Blasted by powerful jets from a lurking black hole its fainter bluish curved shock front is only just visible though, beyond the cosmic Tulip's petals near the right side of the frame.

The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter has been hit by a massive solar plasma eruption as it transited towards Venus.

Solar Orbiter is undertaking close-up studies of the Sun and the inner heliosphere – those parts of the solar system closest to our local yellow dwarf star – and will obtain imagery and data on the sun’s solar wind, magnetic field, and material eruptions. No craft has gone closer to the sun to achieve this.

On Sunday morning (UTC), Solar Orbiter had a close encounter with a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) which burst from the Sun towards Venus and the ship.

Solar Orbiter is designed to withstand and monitor CMEs and has continued to along its journey since. Passing six thousand kilometres from Venus’ surface, the ship will use the planet’s gravity to alter its orbit to complete its next solar pass.

“The close approach went exactly to plan, thanks to a great deal of planning from our colleagues in Flight Dynamics and the diligent care of the Flight Control Team”, explains Jose-Luis Pellon-Bailon, Solar Orbiter Operations Manager.

One of the most spectacular video footage of a UFO encounter was taken by cameras on board the Discovery space shuttle, STS-48, on 15 September, 1991. The video sequence was picked up live by a number of amateurs who were directly monitoring the transmissions. The material has been shown in news broadcasts worldwide.

The video shows several small bright objects maneuvering on screen, apparently interacting with one another in a complex fashion. Skeptics have usually insisted these are merely shots of some of the many small ice particles which inevitably end up in orbit with every space shuttle.

UFO investigators were quick to dispute this interpretation, and US scientist Richard C. Hoagland soon conclusively demonstrated the objects were actually large in size and many hundreds of kilometers away from the shuttle.

One UFO in particular appears to rise up from below the Earth’s dawn horizon and can be clearly seen emerging from behind the atmosphere and the ‘airglow’ layers. It is certainly in orbit around the Earth, some distance out in space, and traveling quickly.

A sudden, bright flash of light is then seen to the left of the picture, below the shuttle. The UFO then turns at a sharp angle and heads out into space at very high speed. Two thin beams of light (or possibly condensation trails) move rapidly up from the Earth’s surface towards where the UFO would have been if it had continued in its original orbit.

• The distance from the Discovery to the Earth’s horizon is 2,757 kilometers.
• The UFO's speed before accelerating into space is 87,000 kph (Mach 73).
• Three seconds after the light flash, the UFO changes direction sharply and accelerates off into space at 340,000 kph (Mach 285) within 2.2 seconds.
• Such an acceleration would produce 14,000 g of force.

In 1962, the Mariner II space probe travelling toward Venus detected electrically charged particles moving through interplanetary space. Then the Ulysses solar probe, launched in 1990, discovered the solar wind came in two varieties—an irregular slow flow of 400 km/sec, and a fast one up to 800 km/sec. The slow solar wind typically comes from the Sun’s equatorially located 'streamer belt', while the fast type is from the relatively peaceful surface seen when looking down through coronal holes at the surface of the photosphere.

Author and electrical engineer Donald E. Scott, PhD, details the intricacies of the dual nature of solar winds, and how his Electric Sun Model solves the mystery of the extreme temperature of the lower corona—which has baffled astrophysics for decades.

Classified UFO Videos Would 'Harm National Security' if Released, Navy Says

The Navy admitted it has a lot more footage of UFOs — but won't share them anytime soon

The U.S. Navy holds unseen videos of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) — or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), as the Department of Defense (DOD) prefers to call them — but will not release the footage publicly because it would "harm national security," a Navy spokesperson wrote Wednesday (Sept. 7).

The admission came in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the government transparency site The Black Vault, which has previously shared thousands of pages of UFO-related documents received via FOIA requests to the CIA and other government agencies. The Black Vault filed the FOIA request to the U.S. Navy in April 2020 — just one day after the Navy declassified three now-infamous videos shot by Navy pilots showing high-tech aircraft moving in seemingly impossible ways. The Black Vault requested that the Navy now turn over any and all other videos related to UAP.

More than two years later, the government responded with a letter that both confirmed that more UAP videos exist and denied the request to turn them over due to national security concerns.

"The release of this information will harm national security as it may provide adversaries valuable information regarding Department of Defense/Navy operations, vulnerabilities, and/or capabilities," Gregory Cason, deputy director of the Navy's FOIA office, wrote in a response letter. "No portions of the videos can be segregated for release."

Cason added that the Navy was able to declassify the three UAP videos released in April 2020 only because the videos had been previously leaked to the media and had already been "discussed extensively in the public domain." The Navy deemed it possible to officially release the footage "without further damage to national security."

Interestingly, in its response to The Black Vault's request, the Navy did not make any attempts to conceal the existence of additional UAP videos. There are clearly more videos of inexplicable UFO encounters in the Navy's archives, but how many and what they depict will have to remain a mystery for now.

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is on its way to rendezvous with the double-asteroid Didymos. When it arrives on September 26th, DART will collide with Dimorphos – the 160-meter (525-foot) moonlet that orbits the main body – to evaluate the kinetic impact technique for the very first time.

This proposed method of planetary defense consists of a spacecraft colliding with an asteroid to alter its orbit and prevent it from colliding with Earth.
