Valentina De Andrade, Leader of the Superior Universal Alignment UFO

Another UFO cult — one of many that came out of the 1980s alien frenzy — the Superior Universal Alignment UFO cult was led by Valentina De Andrade. She preached to her future followers that she received a message from aliens asserting that all male children born after 1981 were evil and needed to be sacrificed to the alien overlords.

It sounds ridiculous, but she was able to manipulate several highly respected civilians into taking part in murdering at least 19 boys between the years of 1981 to 1993. Many members were arrested, but De Andrade was able to flee to Argentina, where she still preaches her beliefs today.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group posted up together in Kauai, Hawaii, where they were met with protests and criticisms after Carlson claimed to be the Hawaiian goddess, Pele. However, in 2021, Carlson’s mummified body was found in Denver after her cause of death appeared to be from ingesting colloidal silver: a COVID-19 “cure” Love Has Won was promoting.

Instead of embarking on a project to reconstruct Nikola Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower, which would provide free electricity to all of North America with no foreseeable end, Puppet President Joe Biden on Thursday announced plans to develop floating platforms in the deep ocean for wind towers that could power millions of homes and vastly expand offshore wind in the United States.

The plan would target sites in the Pacific Ocean off the California and Oregon coasts, as well as in the Atlantic in the Gulf of Maine.

Biden hopes to deploy up to 15 gigawatts of electricity through floating sites by 2035, enough to power 5 million homes. The administration has previously set a goal of 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 using traditional technology that secures wind turbines to the ocean floor.

The Biden administration says it will hold its first offshore wind auction next month. In a land grab for the rich, it's offering nearly 500,000 acres off the coast of New York and New Jersey for wind energy projects that could produce enough electricity to power nearly 2 million homes.

Space-inspired research may help regulate the "hot flashes" associated with menopause. U.S. Air Force material originally destined for space shuttle-era spacesuit gloves is now part of a fabric line that is helping people coping with physical discomfort following the end of menstruation. 

The U.S. National Institutes of Health estimates 1.3 million people in the country each year enter menopause; the condition can last for several years and some people experience "debilitating" symptoms, according to NASA.

There's no biological cure for menopause, but some comfort appears to come from technology — called Outlast — that NASA's Johnson Space Center explored in the 1980s. The aim back then was to help space shuttle astronauts regulate their temperature in the extreme environments of space. During spacewalks, astronauts swing between light and dark. The temperature can be as hot as 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius) in the sunlight and as low as minus 250 degrees F (minus 160 degrees C) in shadows.

Louise Nicholson founded London-based Fifty-One Apparel, which markets menopause-relief apparel, in 2017. The fabrics from Fifty-One Apparel (which is named for the average age of menopause in the U.S.) strive for a high-end feel based on "phase-change materials." These materials allow individuals to maintain a consistent temperature in different environments shifting between heat and cold.

Valid points made on the below video, one being the

Doctors Find 55 Batteries In Woman's Body

The terms “emergency” and “AAA” typically connote a roadside incident. Certain doctors in Dublin, however, are unlikely to ever associate those terms with anything but a recent surgery — during which they found dozens of batteries in a 66-year-old woman’s colon and stomach.

A report of the incident, published Thursday in the Irish Medical Journal, detailed the patient’s arrival at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, where an X-ray revealed the foreign objects in her body. Miraculously, none were obstructing her gastrointestinal tract.

Doctors initially decided to wait in hopes that she would pass the batteries out of her body naturally. Though she released five AA batteries in the first week, subsequent X-rays showed that most were still stuck inside — and the woman began experiencing abdominal pain.

After realizing that her distended stomach was hanging above the pubic bone due to the weight of the batteries, surgeons cut into her abdomen and successfully removed 46 of them. Unfortunately for all involved, four additional batteries remained trapped in the colon. As described in the report, doctors “milked” them into her rectum to remove them from her anus. This brought the total amount of batteries she ingested — both AA and AAA — to a whopping 55.

“To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the highest reported number of batteries ingested at a single point in time,” the journal article said.

The beauty in this image comes in layers. On the bottom layer is the picturesque village of Manlleu in Barcelona, Spain. The six-minute exposure makes car lights into streaks. The next layer is a mountain -- Serra de Bellmunt -- of Europe's famous Pyrenees. Next up is a tremendous lightning storm emanating from a classically-shaped anvil cloud. The long exposure allowed for the capture of many intricate lightning bolts. Finally, at the top and furthest in the distance are stars. Here, the multi-minute exposure made stars into trails. The trailing effect is caused by the rotation of the Earth, and the curvature of the trails indicates their distance from the north spin pole of the Earth above. Taken after sunset in early June, the lightning storm soon moved off. The stars, though, will continue to circle the pole for as long as the Earth spins -- surely billions of years into the future.

He was born Marvel Whiteside Parsons in 1914 and named after his father — but when Marvel Sr. left the family, his mother took to calling him John. Then, after an out of body experience well into his occult days, he was called Belarion Armiluss Al Dajjal, Antichrist, and finally just Jack. Although Parsons came from a wealthy family, he himself seemed to have little regard for money. At various times in his life he was fabulously wealthy, living next door to beer baron August Busch in a huge mansion, and at others illegally making and selling nitroglycerin in his garage to pay the rent.

When he was 14 years old, Parsons started experimenting with fuel that could be used to propel rockets. He didn’t graduate from college but opted to work for Hercules Powder and then Halifax Explosives which was in the Mojave Desert.

Parsons and his best friend Edward S. Forman got their kicks from experimenting with rockets and explosives in the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena. They made connections at the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory, California Institute of Technology (GALCIT). Parsons, Foreman, and Caltech grad student Frank Malina (later of NASA) were dubbed the "Suicide Squad" by students after nearly killing themselves in the desert several times. In 1944, GALCIT became the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Parsons is credited with being one of the founders. Later, when Parsons' extracurricular activities became more well known, Caltech kicked him out.

In 1939, Parsons was introduced to the works of Aleister Crowley, an occultist writer, practitioner of black magic and founder of the religion of Thelema. and he joined the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), an international secret society led by Crowley. Parsons joined the OTO’s local group called the Agape Lodge, which was based in Pasadena and led by Wilfred Smith.

In 1942 he, Forman, Malina and Theodore von Karman founded Aerojet Corporation whose first product was the Jet Assist Take Off (JATO) rocket motors, used extensively during WWII. The company did well.

With the money he was getting from Aerojet, Parsons could support his spiritual activities. He got a huge house on South Orange Grove Blvd. in Pasadena and relocated the Agape Lodge to the downstairs. He and adventurous wife Helen lived in the largest room upstairs and turned it into a temple. The other rooms were used by Smith and an unconventional and revolving group of occultists, eccentrics, artists, dope fiends, and engineers.

With so many people living in such close quarters, it didn’t take long for Smith and Helen to have an affair and a son. Parsons divorced Helen and immediately took up with her teenage sister, Sara Elizabeth Northrup, known as Betty.

About that time a man named L Ron Hubbard came on the scene, after receiving a medical discharge from the Navy at the Pasadena Area Station Hospital. Hubbard and Parsons met through a common interest in science fiction and the occult. Hubbard was looking for a place to land and moved into the house despite having a wife and two kids in Washington State, and it didn’t take the charismatic future Scientology founder long to integrate himself into the life and practices of the group.

Parsons and Hubbard engaged in an 11-day, multi-stage, ceremonial ritual called Babalon Working to manifest the “Scarlet Woman,” fulfilling a prophecy of Aleister Crowley, who had been in close contact with Parsons. Their success or failure has been debated ever since. Crowley, for his part, called them "fools".

There's a whole season of soap operas between the Rocket Scientist and the Founder.

Parsons needed income, so he and Hubbard and Betty started a new business venture called Allied Enterprises. They were planning to buy sail boats on the East Coast and bring them to California for resale. Hubbard contributed about $1,100 to the company against Parsons nearly $21,000. In April 1946, Hubbard and Betty left town with the majority of Allied’s money and were found living on a boat in Miami with no intention of returning to California. Parsons went to Florida and discovered that Hubbard had actually bought three boats. Parsons sued Hubbard who was ordered to give Parsons two of the boats and repay the money he absconded with, which he never did. Then Hubbard married Betty. Then Parsons married Elizabeth Cameron, whom he believed had been conjured by himself and Hubbard during the Babalon Working ritual.

In order to make ends meet later in his life, Parsons found work at North American Aviation Company and later Hughes Aircraft. While at Hughes Aircraft, Parsons was working with Israel to design and build a plant to develop explosives and armaments. He used his security clearance, necessary to work with governments and rockets, to take home confidential documents. He claimed they were old ones he was using to add to his resume, but the FBI started investigating him for spying. This got him fired from Hughes.

Parsons never stopped experimenting with new ideas on his own, and on June 17, 1952, there was an explosion which neighbors a mile away heard. Parsons blew himself up, and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. He was 37 years old. His mother lived nearby, and they had always maintained a very close relationship. She was distraught about the death of her son, and immediately overdosed on sleeping pills and died in her chair.

Parsons legacy included many patents for liquid and solid fuel for rockets. A specimen of one of his solid fuel motors is on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. In 1972 he was honored by having a crater on the moon name after him. The crater is simply called "Parsons" and it is located, appropriately, on the dark side of the Moon.

On June 17, 1952, rocket scientist Jack Parsons, a founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and inventor of the solid fuel that would put man on the moon, died in an explosion of still mysterious origins at his home laboratory in a Pasadena garage.

His widow, Marjorie Cameron Parsons (1922-1995), known personally and professionally as Cameron, fled to Mexico after the fatal blast, but returned to California. A talented painter, she became part of the Los Angeles avant-garde art scene, and made a daring appearance in Kenneth Anger's underground film "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome." Researchers tagging tiger sharks off the southern coast of Belize couldn't believe their eyes when they recently reeled in a different kind of fish. It turned out to be a Greenland shark, which is typically found in the Arctic and can live to be over 500 years old.

The team of scientists thought the shark was dead when they finally hauled it to the surface. Unlike the tiger sharks they were after, this particular shark had black, worn-looking skin and pale blue eyes. Devanshi Kasana, a Ph.D. candidate at the Florida International University Predator Ecology and Conservation lab, said the shark looked "really, really old."

"It was just very surprising and confusing," she said. "As soon as it entered our field of vision, we saw a black figure that was getting bigger and bigger. When it came to the surface, none of the crew with all of their combined fishing experience had seen anything like that."

Kasana said the discovery is especially exciting because it suggests that these sharks, which were thought to mainly exist in the Arctic, can be found in the tropics as well.

With the Moon rising later and later, there’s a great dark-sky window this evening to explore the small constellation Scutum in the south. It’s located just southwest of 3rd-magnitude Lambda Aquilae, which marks Aquila’s tail. Its not a particularly bright constellation, making it a fun target for enthusiasts.

Zooming in, the main “figure” of the Shield is made of four stars: Alpha (α), Beta (β), Zeta (ζ), and Gamma (γ) Scuti. Scutum contains several deep-sky objects, including two Messier targets: M26 and M11, both open clusters. M26 is about 2.7° east-southeast of Alpha Scuti; this 8th-magnitude grouping of stars spans about 15' and mostly looks like a small overdensity of stars. Much more impressive is M11, also called the Wild Duck Cluster.

A scutum was a type of shield used by the soldiers of ancient Rome, superior weaponry at the time.

NASA Gears Up To Deflect Asteroid: Key Test Of Planetary Defense

NASA on Monday will attempt a feat humanity has never before accomplished: deliberately smacking a spacecraft into an asteroid to slightly deflect its orbit, in a key test of our ability to stop cosmic objects from devastating life on Earth.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spaceship launched from California last November and is fast approaching its target, which it will strike at roughly 14,000 miles per hour (23,000 kph).

To be sure, neither the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos, nor the big brother it orbits, called Didymos, pose any threat as the pair loop the Sun, passing some seven million miles from Earth at nearest approach. But the experiment is one NASA has deemed important to carry out before an actual need is discovered.

"This is an exciting time, not only for the agency, but in space history and in the history of humankind quite frankly," Lindley Johnson, a planetary defense officer for NASA told reporters in a briefing Thursday.

If all goes to plan, impact between the car-sized spacecraft, and the 530-foot (160 meters, or two Statues of Liberty) asteroid should take place on September 26 at 7:14pm Eastern Time (2314 GMT), and can be followed on a NASA livestream (https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/#public).

NASA's Francisco "Frank" Rubio and Russia's Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin are scheduled to take off from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 1354 GMT, according to Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Rubio will become the first U.S. astronaut to travel to the ISS on a Russian Soyuz rocket since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into pro-Western Ukraine on Feb. 24. In response, Western capitals including Washington have hit Moscow with unprecedented sanctions and bilateral ties have sunk to new lows.

However, space has managed to remain an outlier of cooperation between the two countries.

Following Rubio's flight, Russia's only active female cosmonaut Anna Kikina is expected to travel to the orbital station in early October aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon. She will become only the fifth professional woman cosmonaut from Russia or the Soviet Union to fly to space, and the first Russian to fly aboard a spacecraft of SpaceX, the company of U.S. billionaire Elon Musk.

With both flights set to go ahead, Russian cosmonauts and Western astronauts have sought to steer clear of the conflict back on Earth, especially when in orbit together.

Cosmonauts Prokopyev and Petelin plan to play football with NASA astronaut Rubio and others aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Prokopyev said during an online news conference at TASS on Tuesday.

"It just so happened that our crew - all the three of us - are playing football," Prokopyev said. "I think we will have a chance to repeat something of this kind aboard the ISS. I have already played football at the station in 2018, with my colleagues Oleg Artemyev and Alexander Gerst. I think we will be able to find some sort of a ball there."

"Anyway, we have already played tennis, badminton and other sports that are favorite and traditional for our cosmonauts. So, one can certainly do sport in space with pleasure," the cosmonaut added.

On July 28, Borisov said during the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the decision on Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS project after 2024 has been made, adding that all obligations before the partners will be fulfilled. On July 29, Borisov explained on Russian TV that the exact date of Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS program will depend on the station’s condition.

The shadows cast by clouds can have a dramatic appearance in the twilight sky during any sunrise or sunset. Due to perspective, the parallel shadows will seem to point back to the rising Sun and a place due east on your horizon near the equinox date. Sitting in my garden I noticed off to my left 2 objects flying parallel to each other, at first I took it to be 2 herons then noticed them to be metallic spheres, thinking they maybe baloons I checked the wind direction which was at a constant moderate breeze in the direction of N to SW these objects however were travelling in a direction of W to E approximately which meant they were cutting across the wind at approx a 45 degrees angle. They elevated to just under the clouds and then disappeared. I was unable to see them on the phone screen (Samsung S21+) so just pointed and shot in the general direction in an attempt to capture some footage so not the best I’m afraid but you can clearly see in the attached video the objects.

TAMPA, Fla. -- A hive of hundreds of honey bees colonized one of the goal posts at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa early in Sunday's Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Green Bay Packers game.

The bees gathered underneath the goal post in the north end zone, which was shown on the Fox television broadcast. The hive did not impact play, as the Packers scored in that end zone on their opening drive. Although the buzzers were still there after the game, it is unclear whether players were even aware of the bees, who have mysteriously chosen the goal post as their new home.

Florida is home to more than 300 species of bees, including 29 that are found nowhere else in the world.

A team of physicists says they have proven a 70-year-old quantum theory where something can be created out of nothing.

An experiment designed to study the flow of “low valence” electrons accidentally succeeded in producing an analog of particle-antiparticle pairs where nothing had previously existed, using only an electric field and the nearly magical properties of the 2-D material graphene. The experiment was performed in January by a research team working at the University of Manchester.

Previous theories held that such a process could only take place in ultra-high energy environments like the vicinity of a black hole or the center of a neutron star. However, the latest breakthrough was performed using standard lab equipment.

Schwinger Effect Theorized Years Ago

In physics, there are situations where individual particles can be manipulated to create additional particles seemingly from nothing. For example, if you take a quantum particle known as a meson and try to rip away its quark, a brand new set of particle-antiparticle pairs will emerge between them from the nothingness of empty space. Still, this situation involves starting with something–a meson–and creating more ‘somethings’ from it.

But back in 1951, Julian Schwinger, one of the founders of quantum electrodynamics and a 1964 Nobel Prize-winning physicist, suggested that creating matter from empty space should be possible, even if there is nothing there to begin with, as long as you perturb that empty space with a strong enough electric field. Since then, this completely theoretical concept has been known simply as the Schwinger effect. Now, a team of researchers has shown this effect is real by essentially creating something out of pure nothingness ...

Jupiter Will Be Closest to Earth In 59 years

Jupiter will be directly opposite the sun as seen from Earth on Monday (Sept. 26), allowing skywatchers to see the solar system's largest planet in incredible detail during an event known as opposition.

During the opposition Jupiter, Earth, and the Sun are aligned in such a way that both planets are on the same side of the star with Earth sitting between these two massive bodies. As the gas giant reaches opposition while rising from the east at the same time the Sun sets in the west, it will also be at its closest approach to Earth ,  known as perigee. This closest approach will bring Jupiter to around 367 million miles from Earth, the gas giant's closest to our planet since 1963.

DRAMATIC GROUND-BASED IMAGES OF ASTEROID STRIKE

Yesterday, NASA's DART spacecraft hit asteroid Dimorphos--an incredible, dramatic bullseye 11 million kilometers from Earth. Surprising even NASA, ground-based telescopes had no trouble seeing the impact. Astronomers with the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Hawaii recorded a bright cloud of debris:

This was the result of the 1,340-pound spacecraft plunging into Dimorphos at 14,000 mph. Most of the debris is probably asteroid dust, but some of DART may be in there, too. A similar video was recorded by the 1-meter Lesedi telescope in South Africa.

Mission scientists say DART hit the asteroid less than 17 meters off center. Think about that: 17 meters off at a distance of 11 million kilometers.

Now that the dust has cleared, astronomers are monitoring Dimorphos's orbit to find out whether or not it has changed in response to the strike. Even a slight shift would prove that human tech can alter an asteroid's trajectory--a possible strategy for future Planetary Defense.

Unexpected CME Sideswiped Earth's Magnetic Field Sparking a G2-Class Geomagnetic Storm

This was not in the forecast. A CME sideswiped Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 26th (~22:00 UT), sparking a G2-class geomagnetic storm. Bright auroras were sighted in multiple locations around Iceland, Norway, and Canada. They even dipped into the United States with green pillars over Minnesota and Wisconsin.

A federal intelligence office charged with matters related to aviation has a new logo ― and it suggests the organization is tracking more than just known aircraft. 

The logo of the National Intelligence Manager-Aviation shows a series of aircraft, as well as a UFO. 

It’s not clear when the logo was created or updated, or by who, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine shows a different logo as recently as June.

3 Russian Cosmonauts Land on Soyuz MS-21 Capsule After 195 days on Space Station

Three cosmonauts returned safely from the International Space Station, landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan after six and a half months in orbit.

Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov, all with the Russian federal space corporation Roscosmos, touched down aboard the Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft at 6:57 a.m. EDT (1057 GMT or 4:57 p.m. local time) on Thursday (Sept. 29). Their parachute-assisted landing southeast of the Kazakh town of Dzhezkazgan brought to an end the first flight of an all-Russian career-cosmonaut crew in more than two decades.

Russian recovery teams were on site soon after the Soyuz spacecraft landed to assist the crew as they exited the descent capsule and began readjusting to the normal pull of gravity. All three cosmonauts were in good spirits as they took their first breaths in of the crisp, fresh air that they had been missing during their 195 days on the International Space Station.

The Russian trio launched to the orbiting complex on March 18 to join the station's Expedition 66 crew. Artemyev, who led Expedition 67, handed over lead to European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti before leaving the station.

"I think I speak on behalf of all our crew in saying how much we appreciated your leadership in the last months," Cristoforetti told Artemyev during a brief change of command ceremony (below) on Wednesday. "I think you have really helped us grow together, not only as crew members and crewmates, but also as one big space family."

Cristoforetti is the first European woman and first Italian to command the station.

Most colours in nature are produced by pigments, which are chemicals that selectively absorb and reflect different wavelengths of light. Most paints, for example, are a blend of several pigments, intended to reflect light in such a way that you see a specific color. But scientists publishing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said that the “brightest biological substance” in nature – a spectacular African fruit that is intensely colored blue – creates its own color not from a pigment, but from specialized structures in its cells.

This African fruit is called Pollia condensata – sometimes called the marble berry. It’s found growing wild in the forests of Ethiopia, Mozambique, Tanzania and other African countries. It has shiny blue berries – hard as rock – that are mainly seeds. Although it’s called a fruit, it can’t be eaten. In some African nations, the small metallic fruits have been used for decorative purposes because their colors stay intense for many years.

What they found is that cells in the fruit of the marble berry have walls made of tightly coiled cellulose strands. Different spacings between the strands in each cell reflect light of different wavelengths, producing the iridescent blue colouring of this plant.

Cooking a Pig - Dani Tribe Ceremony

The Dani use an earth oven method of cooking pig and their staple crops such as sweet potato, banana, and cassava. They heat some stones in a fire until they are extremely hot, then wrap cuts of meat and pieces of sweet potato or banana inside banana leaves. The food package is then lowered into a pit which has been lined with some of the hot stones, the remaining hot stones are then placed on top, and the pit is covered in grass and a cover to keep steam in. Pigs are too valuable to be served regularly, and are reserved for special occasions only.

During the evening in early October, the small constellation of Delphinus is positioned high in the southern sky. Look for its five 4th-magnitude stars shining just to the lower left (or celestial southeast) of the line connecting the bright stars Deneb and Altair.

What could shoot out a neutron star like a cannon ball? A supernova. About 10,000 years ago, the supernova that created the nebular remnant CTB 1 not only destroyed a massive star but blasted its newly formed neutron star core -- a pulsar -- out into the Milky Way Galaxy. The pulsar, spinning 8.7 times a second, was discovered using downloadable software Einstein@Home searching through data taken by NASA's orbiting Fermi Gamma-Ray Observatory. Traveling over 1,000 kilometers per second, the pulsar PSR J0002+6216 (J0002 for short) has already left the supernova remnant CTB 1, and is fast enough to leave our Galaxy entirely. Pictured, the trail of the pulsar is visible extending to the lower left of the supernova remnant. The featured image is a combination of radio images from the VLA and DRAO radio observatories, as well as data archived from NASA's orbiting IRAS infrared observatory. It is well known that supernovas can act as cannons, and pulsars can act as cannonballs -- what is not known is how supernovas do it.

Rovers on Mars frequently come across debris – like this heat shield and spring – from their own or other missions

Discarded pieces of landing gear, crashed spacecraft, and wear and tear have produced a lot of debris that is now scattered around the Martian surface.

People have been exploring the surface of Mars for over 50 years. According to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, nations have sent 18 human-made objects to Mars over 14 separate missions. Many of these missions are still ongoing, but over the decades of Martian exploration, humankind has left behind many pieces of trash on the planet’s surface.

In mid-August 2022, NASA confirmed that the Mars rover Perseverance had spotted a piece of trash jettisoned during its landing, this time a tangled mess of netting. And this is not the first time scientists have found trash on Mars. That’s because there is a lot there.

Debris on Mars comes from three main sources: discarded hardware, inactive spacecraft and crashed spacecraft.

Every mission to the Martian surface requires a module that protects the spacecraft. This module includes a heat shield for when the craft passes through the planet’s atmosphere and a parachute and landing hardware so that it can land softly.The craft discards pieces of the module as it descends, and these pieces can land in different locations on the planet’s surface.

A lot of small, windblown trash has been found over the years – like the netting material found recently. Earlier in the year, on June 13, 2022, Perseverance rover spotted a large, shiny thermal blanket wedged in some rocks 1.25 miles (2 km) from where the rover landed. Both Curiosity in 2012 and Opportunity in 2005 also came across debris from their landing vehicles.

The nine inactive spacecraft on the surface of Mars make up a lot of the debris. These are the Mars 3 lander, Mars 6 lander, Viking 1 lander, Viking 2 lander, the Sojourner rover, the formerly lost Beagle 2 lander, the Phoenix lander, the Spirit rover and the most recently deceased spacecraft, the Opportunity rover.

Some fireflies have a mystifying gift for flashing their abdomens in sync. New observations are overturning long-accepted explanations for how the synchronization occurs, at least for some species.

In Japanese folk traditions, they symbolize departing souls or silent, ardent love. Some Indigenous cultures in the Peruvian Andes view them as the eyes of ghosts. And across various Western cultures, fireflies, glow-worms and other bioluminescent beetles have been linked to a dazzling and at times contradictory array of metaphoric associations: “childhood, crop, doom, elves, fear, habitat change, idyll, love, luck, mortality, prostitution, solstice, stars and fleetingness of words and cognition,” as one 2016 review noted.

Physicists revere fireflies for reasons that might seem every bit as mystical: Of the roughly 2,200 species scattered around the world, a handful have the documented ability to flash in synchrony. In Malaysia and Thailand, firefly-studded mangrove trees can blink on beat as if strung up with Christmas lights; every summer in Appalachia, waves of eerie concordance ripple across fields and forests. The fireflies’ light shows lure mates and crowds of human sightseers, but they have also helped spark some of the most fundamental attempts to explain synchronization, the alchemy by which elaborate coordination emerges from even very simple individual parts.

Orit Peleg remembers when she first encountered the mystery of synchronous fireflies as an undergraduate studying physics and computer science. The fireflies were presented as an example of how simple systems achieve synchrony in Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, a textbook by the mathematician Steven Strogatz that her class was using. Peleg had never even seen a firefly, as they are uncommon in Israel, where she grew up.

“It’s just so beautiful that it somehow stuck in my head for many, many years,” she said. By the time Peleg began her own lab, applying computational approaches to biology at the University of Colorado and at the Santa Fe Institute, she had learned that although fireflies had inspired a lot of math, quantitative data describing what the insects were actually doing was scant.

She set out to fix that. In the last two years, a series of papers from Peleg’s group have opened a fire hose of real-world data about synchrony in multiple firefly species at multiple study sites, and at a much higher resolution than previous modelers or biologists had managed. “Pretty astonishing” is how the mathematical biologist Bard Ermentrout at the University of Pittsburgh described the team’s results. “I was blown away,” said Andrew Moiseff, a biologist at the University of Connecticut. “[Fireflies] have been doing computer science well before we even existed,” added Andrew Moiseff, University of Connecticut.

The CME was *not* caused by the comet. It was hurled into space by a magnetic filament eruption in the sun's southern hemisphere (movie) while the comet was still far away. NOAA analysts are looking at the CME now to see if it might graze Earth's magnetic field in a few days.

In order to reform idle convicts and combat crime that plagued the Victorian era, Sir William Cubitt invented the “everlasting staircase" in 1818. It was a large, imposing 24-spoked paddlewheel that could handle as many as 40 convicts endlessly climbing. As they stepped the wheel would rotate and grind corn or pump water. They were isolated in compartments and forced to climb for hours each day.

An image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals a remarkable sight: at least 17 concentric dust rings emanating from a pair of stars located about 5,300 light-years from Earth. Each ring was created when the stars came close together and their colliding stellar winds (streams of gas they blow into space) caused some of the gas to compress into dust. Collectively known as Wolf-Rayet 140, the stars’ orbits bring them together about once every eight years, so just like the growth rings of a tree trunk, these dusty loops mark the passage of time.

Whizzing around the Earth at around 28,000 kilometers per hour, 420 kilometers off the ground in the International Space Station (ISS), certainly gives one a unique perspective on our planet.

That view inspired Cristoforetti to dive into the Chinese classics as the ISS flew over parts of China this week. She quoted 4th-century poet Wang Xizhi's Preface to Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion:

Crew Dragon Launches Safely, Carrying First Russian From US Soil in 20 Years

On Wednesday, Crew Dragon carried astronauts into space for an eighth time, with the fifth operational mission for NASA.

Among the four Dragon riders was cosmonaut Anna Kikina, making her debut flight into space. She is just the sixth Russian or Soviet female cosmonaut in the history of the program since Valentina Tereshkova flew into orbit on June 16, 1963. Kikina is also the first Russian to launch into space from the United States since Nikolai M. Budarin on the space shuttle Endeavour in 2002.

And so Kikina's spaceflight on Wednesday is both the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. A Russian launching from US soil brings to an end a 20-year-drought and represents a hopeful sign that while the United States and Russia are locked in a deep a serious conflict on Earth, cooperation in space remains not only possible, but a reality.

That was the view expressed Wednesday by Sergei Krikalev, who is the chief of human spaceflight for Roscosmos, during a post-flight news conference. Krikalev is a veteran cosmonaut who became the first Russian to fly on NASA's space shuttle in 1994.

"The United States and Russia have cooperated in space for more than 40 years, dating back to a docking of an Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft in the 1970s." It was his goal, he said, to ensure that the two countries would "continue our cooperation as long as I can imagine."

Archaeologists in Syria have discovered a stunning mosaic featuring depictions of the Trojan War, Hercules and Neptune dating to the fourth century A.D.

Archaeologists in war-torn Syria have unearthed a seemingly untouched mosaic from the Roman era that features events from the Trojan War, the chiseled muscles of the Roman demigod Hercules and the powerful ancient Roman god Neptune alongside 40 of his mistresses.  

The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, a Syrian government agency, discovered the 65.5-foot-long by 20-foot-wide (20 by 6 meters) mural in Rastan, a town in central Syria near Homs, a key battleground during the Syrian revolution, agency representatives announced on Wednesday (Oct. 12), according to the Associated Press.
 
Many of Syria's artifacts have been destroyed and looted during the past 11 years of conflict. During its excavation, the mosaic faced an uncertain future. "Unfortunately, there were armed groups that tried to sell the mosaic at one point in 2017 and listed it on social media platforms," one archeologist told the AP.

Every year in mid- to late-October, Earth passes through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, the parent of the Orionids. For many nights in a row, pre-dawn sky watchers can see meteors streaking out of the constellation Orion, near the Hunter's shoulder. In 2022, forecasters expect the Orionids to peak on Oct. 20-22 with 20 to 25 meteors per hour. In exceptional years, such as 2006-2009, the peak rates were on par with the Perseids (50-75 per hour).

"For clarity I'm going to label these lights A, B, C, and D. My apologies in advance that I am directionally challenged, so I'm using right/left/vertical/horizontal/diagonal instead of the cardinal points, so I don't get myself mixed up. I didn't know what to put for the elevation degree, either. However, I know that we were facing SE to where our street crosses with Myrtle avenue, if that helps to make sense of the flight directions.

I am out watching the sunset on my balcony almost every night, so I know the skyline well. There are often planes taking off from JFK, and there is are several low towers with red and white glowing lights. Occasionally there are helicopters. I don't know what this was, but it was not like anything my partner or I have seen before. He called me outside and I saw that one of the lights in the sky (Light A), which I had originally thought was a white light from a tower, was moving slowly, in a horizontal direction, from left to right towards another, brighter, stationary white light Light B). It then started to ascend towards another brighter, higher stationary light (light C). Its flight path formed a diagonal line between Light B and C. Light A came close to the higher light, C, and then changed direction a third time to ascend diagonally to the right. As Light A started to diagonally ascend, Light C, and another bright light (Light D), previously stationary to its left, started to move horizontally towards each other. Light C passed Light D and then continued moving quickly on, in the same direction. Meanwhile, Light A is continuing to ascend diagonally.

At this point I was concerned I wouldn't be able to capture all of the lights onscreen, so I flipped my phone camera vertically. Light C seemed to have grown dimmer and was flickering. After a few moments continuing past Light D to the left, Light C stopped and reversed its direction, heading back towards Light D again. Only light B and D remained stationary at that time, and Light B was the only light that appeared not to move at all. At this point, about two minutes into filming, I stopped because my boyfriend (completely uninterested and unfazed by this phenomenon) made me feel like I was being a nut. However, there continued to be movement for another few minutes at least, and some movement had happened shortly before I remembered to start filming.

I grew up on a farm looking at the constellations, satellites, etc. and love to watch the sky in Brooklyn as well. I've never seen any objects move in a coordinated way like this, especially changing directions multiple times. I would love if someone had an explanation for this. I'm including the video I shot on my phone (iphone 11)."

Our own Sun also lies within the Milky Way's Orion Arm, only about 1,500 light-years from the California Nebula. Also known as NGC 1499, the classic emission nebula is around 100 light-years long. The California Nebula shines with the telltale reddish glow characteristic of hydrogen atoms recombining with long lost electrons. The electrons have been stripped away, ionized by energetic starlight. Most likely providing the energetic starlight that ionizes much of the nebular gas is the bright, hot star Xi Persei, just to the right of the nebula. A popular target for astrophotographers, this deep image reveals the glowing nebula, obscuring dust, and stars across a 3 degree wide field of view. The California Nebula lies toward the constellation Perseus, not far from the Pleiades.

A 2,000-year search for Hipparchus’ Star Catalog has concluded with a new study hailing its discovery, marking “a major milestone” in science.

The long-lost star map that is enormously important in the history of science has been discovered in the time-worn pages of a Medieval manuscript after a search that has spanned nearly 2,000 years, according to the study.

Compiled by the ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived during the 2nd century B.C., the legendary star catalog marks the first attempt to record accurate positions of celestial objects with fixed coordinates. Like many ancient documents, copies of the catalog were lost in the centuries after it was written, and it is only known from references to it in later works. The mystery of its disappearance has prompted a search for the catalog that dates back nearly 2,000 years.

Now, a team led by Victor Gysembergh, a professor at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), reports that passages of Hipparchus’ Star Catalog have been discovered underneath the text of a Christian manuscript, the Codex Climaci Rescriptus, that originated from Egypt’s Saint Catherine’s Monastery, and is now mostly housed at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. 

“Hipparchus’ Star Catalog is the very first attempt in human history to precisely measure the positions of the fixed stars,” Gysembergh said in an email. “It is a major milestone in the birth of science as a collective endeavor to measure and predict our surroundings.”

Surprisingly, the team found that the Hipparchus constellations were more precise than subsequent maps, with positions measured to the nearest degree. The accuracy of Hipparchus wasn’t equaled until the Persian astronomer Ulugh Beg compiled his Zij-i Sultani star catalog in the 1400s.

You may have noticed the common blue-green algae on a lake, or a substance that people refer to as “pond-scum.” This algae layer is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria, which can be visible to the human eye in other colors such as pink or red.

Cyanobacteria are also found in the ocean, on cliffs, rocks, hot springs and in other extreme environments. They’re ancient organisms — dating to about 3 billion years ago — and they are the original source of oxygen we breathe today, says William Gerwick, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California San Diego.

While cyanobacteria can also produce certain toxins that can pose direct threats to humans and animals, there is also a new possibility that the bacteria could treat human disease, according to Nicole Avalon, a NIH National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellow at the Gerwick lab.

“It's those same chemicals that we're looking at for their potential utility in such diverse areas as anticancer treatments, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory agents,” says Gerwick.

Avalon hopes to discover new drugs from this source once considered hopeless to treat cancer and other conditions such as traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's disease.

But dusty debris from Comet Halley can be seen raining through planet Earth's skies twice a year during two annual meteor showers, the Eta Aquarids in May and the Orionids in October. Including meteors near the shower maximum on October 21, this composite view compiles Orionid meteors captured from years 2015 through 2022. About 47 bright meteors are registered in the panoramic night skyscape. Against a starry background extending along the Milky Way, the Orionid meteors all seem to radiate from a point just north of Betelgeuse in the familiar constellation of the Hunter. In the foreground are mountains in eastern Slovakia near the city of Presov.

There’s something about being with trees – a walk in the forest, the experience of planting a tree or leaning back against a tree with a book in hand. Are trees sentient beings? Can they sense how humans feel about them? Are they affected by our emotions? And, what is it about trees that has an uplifting effect on people?

A new generation of scientists is showing that plants and trees are intelligent and aware; they process information, sleep, remember, and communicate with one another. They have at least 20 different types of senses, including ones that roughly correspond to our five senses. They also have additional senses that can do things such as measure humidity, detect gravity, vibrations, and sense electromagnetic fields.

These scientists insist that plants and trees are intelligent because they can sense, learn, remember and even react in ways similar to humans. Their behaviors exhibit a coordinated activity and response across the whole organism that require signaling and communication systems which include long-distance electrical signals, specialized vascular tissues, and the production of chemicals used by the brain and nervous systems in humans and animals. The most well-known way they communicate is chemically. This is why some plants and trees smell so good and others awful.

Researchers have also tracked the exchange of nutrients and chemical signals between trees through an invisible underground fungal network.

The oldest trees, or "mother trees", function as hubs and help nourish their offspring until they’re tall enough to reach the light. In other words, trees recognize their seedlings as kin. Good News: Ozone Hole Continues Shrinking in 2022

The depleted area of the ozone layer over the South Pole was slightly smaller than last year and generally continued the overall shrinking trend of recent years.

Between September 7, 2022, and October 13, 2022, the annual Antarctic ozone hole reached an average area of 23.2 million square kilometers (9.0 million square miles). This depleted area of the ozone layer over the South Pole was slightly smaller than the average for the same period last year. This marks a general continuation of the overall shrinking trend of recent years.

“Over time, steady progress is being made, and the hole is getting smaller,” said Paul Newman, chief scientist for Earth sciences at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “We see some wavering as weather changes and other factors make the numbers wiggle slightly from day to day and week to week. But overall, we see it decreasing through the past two decades. The elimination of ozone-depleting substances through the Montreal Protocol is shrinking the hole.”

Finding Cannot be Explained by Classical Assumptions

An international team of astrophysicists has made a puzzling discovery while analyzing certain star clusters. The finding challenges Newton’s laws of gravity, the researchers write in their publication. Instead, the observations are consistent with the predictions of an alternative theory of gravity. However, this is controversial among experts. The results have now been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The University of Bonn played a major role in the study.

“According to Newton’s laws of gravity, it’s a matter of chance in which of the tails a lost star ends up,” explains Dr. Jan Pflamm-Altenburg of the Helmholtz Institute of Radiation and Nuclear Physics. “So both tails should contain about the same number of stars. However, in our work we were able to prove for the first time that this is not true: In the clusters we studied, the front tail always contains significantly more stars nearby to the cluster than the rear tail.”

In addition to the University of Bonn, the study involved the Charles University in Prague, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Garching, the Observatoire astronomique de Strasbourg, the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESA ESTEC) in Nordwijk, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS) in Zanjan (Iran), the University of Science and Technology of China, the Universidad de La Laguna in Tenerife, and the University of Cambridge.

NASA’s EMIT instrument has found more than 50 methane super emitters in its first few months of operation—and that’s not even its main job.

A powerful eye in the sky is helping scientists spy “super-emitters” of methane, a greenhouse gas about 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

That observer is NASA’s Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation instrument, or EMIT for short. EMIT has been mapping the chemical composition of dust throughout Earth’s desert regions since being installed on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS) in July, helping researchers understand how airborne dust affects climate. 

That’s the main goal of EMIT’s mission. But it’s making another, less expected contribution to climate studies as well, NASA officials announced on Tuesday (Oct. 25). The instrument is identifying huge plumes of heat-trapping methane gas around the world—more than 50 of them already, in fact.

“Reining in methane emissions is key to limiting global warming. This exciting new development will not only help researchers better pinpoint where methane leaks are coming from, but also provide insight on how they can be addressed—quickly,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement.

Drought Strangles the Mighty Mississippi

The nation’s mightiest, most mythical waterway has been strangled by months of dry conditions, which have sent water levels plummeting to historic lows. For weeks now, that slow-moving crisis has made it difficult, if not impossible, to move barges down a river that serves as a highway for about 60 percent of the nation’s foreign-bound corn and soybeans.

The result is a season of uncertainty for many up and down the river who depend on it for their livelihoods, from farmers growing crops to the tugboat pilots who steer barges toward the Gulf of Mexico and back. The deep worries over the crippled supply chain have mingled with the sheer curiosity of people who have flocked to the banks of the Mississippi to marvel at a sight few can ever recall.

In this part of the country, rising waters are usually a bigger concern — the last major floods hit in 2019, while just this summer, deadly flash flooding hit nearby parts of Missouri and Kentucky. But now it faces an ominously dry long-term forecast.

The only cure? Rain. And not just rain where the Mississippi is low right now, but farther north, in the tributaries upon which it relies.

Unexpected Solar Flare Smashes Into Earth: Radio Blackouts in Australia and New Zealand

A surprise solar flare has burst from an area of dense magnetism on the sun’s surface, causing a temporary radio blackout in parts of Australia and all of New Zealand. 

The M5-class, medium-strength solar flare was recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory as it erupted from the sunspot AR3141 at 7:11 p.m. ET on Sunday (Nov. 6). The flare created a rush of radiation that ionized Earth’s atmosphere, according to spaceweather.com.

Solar activity, which astronomers have tracked since 1775, rises and falls according to a roughly 11-year cycle. Solar activity has been especially high recently, with sunspot numbers nearly twice those of NOAA predictions.

Newly Discovered Sea Creatures From the Indian Ocean Floor

Two scientific journeys to the northeast Indian Ocean, led by Museums Victoria Research Institute, are bringing back a treasure trove of specimens – including newly discovered eels, batfishes, spiderfishes, and pumice stones that probably came from the catastrophic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa.

The deep-sea batfish, which uses its armlike limbs to cross the sea floor. Batfishes have hollow snouts containing tiny fishing lures to attract prey.

This is a previously unknown-to-science blind eel, found at around 5km deep. At that depth, there’s not much light – which is why the eel has poorly developed eyes and transparent skin. The females give birth to live young: uncommon in fish.
