The Nabataean Kingdom ruled over an area that spanned from the southern Levant to northern Arabia, a position that allowed them to control the Incense Route that passed through the Arabian Peninsula. As a result of this lucrative trade, the Nabataeans grew immensely wealthy and powerful. One expression of this wealth can be seen in the monuments they built. One such monument is the Qasr al-Farid. It is an unfinished tomb that stands alone is the largest tomb at the Mada’in Saleh archaeological site.

Called the “lonely castle”, Qasr Al-Farid is nevertheless a tomb. It was carved out of a rock that appeared out of nowhere about 2,000 years ago. A construction left in suspense, suggested by the contrast between a facade meticulously carved with columns and crowns, and the other part of the rock still intact. There seems to be no evidence of burial inside. With its unfinished taste and unusual location, the tomb of Qasr Al-Farid cultivates its mystery.

One mad thing you forgot to mention is that the City of London elections give votes to the businesses in Square Mile based on the number of employees they have. Solar Storm Smashes Hole in Earth's Magnetosphere, Triggering Rare Pink Auroras

An explosion of extremely rare pink auroras recently lit up the night sky above Norway after a solar storm slammed into Earth and ripped a hole in the planet's magnetic field. The breach enabled highly energetic solar particles to penetrate deeper into the atmosphere than normal, triggering the unusual colored lights.

Auroras most commonly appear green, because oxygen atoms, which are abundant in the part of the atmosphere that solar wind normally reaches, emit that hue when they are excited. However, during the recent solar storm, the crack in Earth's magnetosphere enabled the solar wind to penetrate below 62 miles, where nitrogen is the most abundant gas. As a result, the auroras gave off a neon pink glow as the supercharged particles smashed mostly into nitrogen atoms.

The magnetosphere hole closed around 6 hours after it first opened. During this time, a strange ribbon of blue light also emerged in the skies above Sweden, where it hung motionless in the sky for around 30 minutes.

Archaeologists Find 3,700-Year-Old Ivory Comb Inscribed with Canaanite’s Wish to Eradicate Lice

The small inscribed ivory comb was found at Tel Lachish, a key Canaanite city-state in the 2nd millennium BCE, the second most important city in the Judean Kingdom after Jerusalem in the Iron Age, and a major city in the Persian and Early Hellenistic eras. The inscription in early Canaanite script expresses the wish that the comb will eradicate the lice from the hair and beard of the owner.

The ivory comb from Tel Lachish is relatively small, measuring roughly 3.5 by 2.5 cm (1.4 by 1 inches).

“The central part of the comb is somewhat eroded, possibly by the pressure of fingers holding the comb during haircare or removal of lice,” said Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Professor Yosef Garfinkel and colleagues.

The inscription reads: ‘May this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard.’

“This is the first sentence ever found in the Canaanite language in Israel,” Professor Garfinkel said. “There are Canaanites in Ugarit in Syria, but they write in a different script, not the alphabet that is used till today. The comb inscription is direct evidence for the use of the alphabet in daily activities some 3,700 years ago. This is a landmark in the history of the human ability to write.”

The researchers also analyzed the comb for the presence of the remains of ancient lice under a microscope.

“Remains of head lice, 0.5-0.6 mm in size, were found on the second tooth,” they said.

Don’t Miss the Stunning Double Cluster in Perseus

Apart from perhaps the superb Pleiades open cluster in Taurus, the magnificent pair of open clusters forming the Double Cluster in Perseus is the finest in its class at mid-northern latitudes. Formally classified as NGC 869 and NGC 884 (h and chi [χ] Persei, respectively), either cluster rivals or eclipses the vast majority of open clusters, including those of the Messier variety. As a pair though, the Double Cluster is one of the most stunning of deep-sky objects in the entire sky.

The Double Cluster can be spied without optical aid on the best of nights at a dark-sky location, but a never-to-be-forgotten sight awaits through a pair of binoculars or a small telescope – the field of view strewn with myriad, sparking jewels of varying brightness and colour set against a deep velvet backdrop. One could go as far as to argue that only the Moon provides a finer binocular view! This is an object where smaller is best: an 80mm, f/5 refractor at 40× frames the pair, covering a degree across side by side, nicely.

The Double Cluster is easy to find; lying close to Perseus’ northern boundary with Cassiopeia, the latter’s famous ‘W’ asterism can be put to good use as a celestial signpost. First, locate the central star of the five stars in the ‘W’, gamma (γ, mag. +2.1) and then Ruchbah (delta [δ], +2.7), the next star eastwards. If you sweep eastwards by roughly two lengths of an imaginary line between the two stars (roughly seven degrees in total), then you should land on the Double Cluster with little difficulty.

The Great Victorian Fish Count, Victoria’s largest marine citizen science event, is celebrating its 20th anniversary hoping people from all over the state will get involved. From November 12 until Sunday December 11, divers and snorkelers will take to the Victorian coastline to count fish at their local dive sites – from Port Fairy in the West to Marlo in the East.

Hundreds of citizen scientists armed with dive slates will record the numbers of important fish species, and any others not usually found in the area, as a part of this long-term effort to monitor fish across the state. They’ll follow in the wake of other keen citizen scientists who have not only counted fish, but have found new fish species, since the first count in 2002.

“Over the past two decades divers and snorkelers have rediscovered the Western Blue Groper in Victoria waters and found fish species never before seen like the Spotted Grubfish, Silver Dory, Short-nosed Boarfish and Spiny Anglerfish,” says Victorian National Parks Association ReefWatch Coordinator, Kade Mills.

“Not only is the count heaps of fun, it also makes a really important scientific contribution that highlights the incredible diversity of Victoria’s marine life.”

In der Zeit vom 11. bis zum 13. November waren die Nächte hier klar genug, dass ich den Tauriden Meteorstrom beobachten konnte. Die Tauriden bestehen eigentlich aus zwei Strömen: den südlichen und den nördlichen Tauriden. Beide sind im Oktober und November aktiv. Zwar sind die Tauriden kein besonders starker Meteorschauer, mit nur rund 5 Sternschnupen zum Höhepunkt, allerdings sind sie dafür bekannt, dass sie helle Feuerkugeln produzieren. Die Nördlichen Tauriden hatten ihren Höhepunkt in der Nacht vom 12. auf den 13. November. Neben den Tauriden sind auch die Leoniden aktiv, die am 17. November ihren Höhepunkt erreichen.

From November 11th to 13th the nights here (Harpstedt, Germany) were clear enough to see the Taurid Meteor Shower. The Taurids are actually made up of two streams: the Southern and Northern Taurids. Both are active in October and November. While the Taurids are not a particularly powerful meteor shower, peaking with only around 5 shooting stars, they are known for producing bright fireballs. The Northern Taurids peaked on the night of November 12-13. In addition to the Taurids, the Leonids are also active, peaking on November 17th.

Artemis I is scheduled to lift off Tuesday night (Wednesday morning for Eastern and Central time folk), despite a mild battering from Hurricane Nicole over the weekend.

The rocket is set for launch at 1:04 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday and can be watched on NASA Live (*posted above* or https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive/). Cryogenic tanking will be broadcast prior to the launch livestream at 10:30 p.m. Eastern time, and post-launch press conferences will take place at 4 a.m.

Starting one minute after liftoff, you can follow the Orion capsule on its journey to the Moon and back on NASA’s Artemis Real-time Orbit Website, or AROW (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/track-nasa-s-artemis-i-mission-in-real-time/), a clever pun on the Greek goddess Artemis’ skill at archery). The site visualizes data from sensors on the Orion spacecraft, providing information about its position, speed, alignment, and other flight details.

Delayed several times, NASA announced on Monday that it would proceed with the mission. Hurricane Nicole caused problems with caulking called RTV material to delaminate. The agency was also detecting anomalous signals from the tail mast umbilical, a fuel line in the rocket, on Monday. Tuesday, officials told the press that despite some superficial damage to insulation on the Orion capsule, the rocket was ready to fly. As of Tuesday afternoon, fuel loading on the craft was successful.

Artemis I is NASA's uncrewed test of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion crew capsule.

To make sure the rocket, the capsule, and the planned route to the Moon are safe enough to send astronauts to the Moon in, NASA engineers will collect masses of data from sensors and recorders in the capsule. Artemis I also uses sensor-laden mannequins aboard the flight to test new spacesuits, vests to protect astronauts against radiation, and seats in the Orion capsule.

Its the grandparent of Islam and Christianity and one of the world’s oldest surviving religions, by some counts dating back nearly 4,000 years. This, at least, has long been a common view of Judaism. But now an Israeli archaeologist is challenging those long-held assumptions.

Based on 15 years of studying textual and archaeological evidence, Yonatan Adler of Ariel University, in the West Bank, concludes that ordinary Judeans didn’t consistently celebrate Passover, hold the Sabbath sacred or practice other traditional forms of Jewish ritual until a century or so before the birth of Jesus. If his theory proves correct, then Judaism is, at best, Christianity’s elder sibling and a younger cousin to the religions of ancient Greece and Rome.

Adler examined artifacts from dozens of excavations in the Levant, as well as ancient texts, including the Bible, to determine how people behaved in the centuries before the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 C.E. His analysis has won initial praise from some Near Eastern archaeologists and textual scholars who have examined the arguments laid out in the book. “He makes a good case that is certainly worth considering seriously,” says Jodi Magness, an archaeologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with extensive experience excavating in Israel. Harald Samuel, a classical Hebrew expert at the University of Oxford in England, says, “Adler’s work is absolutely solid.”

The new findings challenge conventional wisdom that assumes Jewish practices evolved in the same era as the Hebrew Bible was written—a view that Samuel argues will be hard to alter. They are also likely to raise broader questions of what constitutes Judaism and religion more generally.

Why Do Russian Rockets Make 'Blue Auroras'?

On Nov. 3rd, 2022, sky watchers in Sweden and Norway watched a strange blue aurora snake across the night sky.

Its color and motion seemed to defy the normal laws of aurora physics. Indeed, it was not an aurora. Experts quickly realized that the display coincided with the launch of an ICBM from a Russian submarine beneath the White Sea.

It wasn't the first time blue clouds have appeared. On Dec. 9, 2009, a Russian rocket caused a worldwide sensation when it created a blue spiral over Norway. "Blue auroras" appeared again on Oct. 26, 2017, following another Russian battle drill.

Over the years, Arctic sky watchers have seen many of these blue clouds, with explanations ranging from auroras to aliens to wormholes in space. In fact, rockets are the most likely explanation. Common threads seem to be the involvement of Bulava and Topol missiles, and the use of solid propellant ascent motors.

Each person’s blood is one of four major types: A, B, AB, or O. Blood types are determined by the types of antigens on the blood cells. Anyway, here’s some rocket to cheer yaz up.

Consists of 8 clips of the recent (first) launch of the most powerful rocket yet. Unmanned, to circle the moon. Apparently, if this works out, both the main (“SLS”) rocket system and the included “Orion” project will be given human-carrying certification. All that carefulness must be why they’re years late on this first try.

Each clip is doubled with a slo-mo of same, total is 13:05. No music added until the slo-mo part of the last POV (10:15+), tasteful and dramatic, description credits it to the channel owner.

I believe it is the channel owner (Tim Dodd?) who is dancing and hooting (on the left, well before the other peeps raise their arms) at his irl view in the real time clip of 4/8 (2:37+).

I think David killing Goliath with a sling was staged. They could have abducted the giant and put a micro-explosive in his skull to ensure a kill even if he missed. The other possibly is they had a super soldier sniper from Project Surrogate take him out.

In reference to the interview with ex GS-15 CIA man John Ramirez.

I saw the interview about John Ramirez (retired CIA) and also previous interviews.

What surprises me he never brought up Lou Elizonda in any interviews whom is a confirmed experiencer. Ramirez was involved at the same time as AATIP was in preparation.

He was asked to head up AATIP but refused because of his lack of knowledge in the area.

Fortunately, a friend of mine had a private meeting off the record with John Ramirez. An important statement from Ramirez was that the only route to ET/NHI contact was by channelling and that this was agreed within a small group in the CIA. This was an amazing statement to make because as those whom have researched this field no that channelling is a deceptive route to take.

In addition, Shultz whom came to prominence recently, she also worked in the CIA at the same time as Ramirez. She was a gifted channeller that John Ramirez looked up too as a key ET/NHI communicater within the CIA. The CIA has many categories in intelligence but still comes under the umbrella of the CIA.

The astonishing revelation which required further research demonstrates a huge reliance on channellers and not experiencers. IMO this bodes a lack of ignorance within the CIA. However, I believe this information to my friend was disinformation, sending a researcher down an avenue as a lost cause.

In conclusion this completely skews the information messages from ET/NHI that is probably confusing the inner sanctum of the CIA. But as stated above I believe is complete disinfo.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded one of the most spectacular solar eruptions in years. The mass of super-hot gases and charged particles exploded from the west limb of the sun. As captured in the video, most of the particles did not have enough force to break away from the sun, and can be seen falling back toward its surface.

Amateur Scientists Have Helped Astronomers Identify Nearly a Quarter-Million Galaxies So Far

Astronomers on a historically ambitious and massive galaxy-mapping mission have activated more than 10,000 amateur scientists in 85 countries to help in their quest. Now they hope to significantly scale up their volunteer force for a unique project that could reveal for the first time the nature of dark energy.

The research project known as HETDEX, or the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment, is based at The University of Texas at Austin's McDonald Observatory and relies on volunteers who participate online in a project called Dark Energy Explorers.

With a smartphone or computer, participants can experience what it's like to be an astronomer, teasing apart the mysteries of the universe while helping professional astronomers find distant galaxies and learn more about the mysterious force known as dark energy, which is causing the universe to rapidly expand.

Since Dark Energy Explorers launched in February 2021, more than 10,000 volunteers have identified approximately 240,000 galaxies. That amounts to almost one-tenth of the number of galaxies the researchers expect to ultimately find in their survey of a patch of sky that includes most of the Big Dipper and is about the size of 2,000 full moons.

"That's why we need more people," said Karl Gebhardt, a professor of astronomy at UT Austin and project scientist and principal investigator for HETDEX. "If we can get to 100,000 people volunteering, which I think is doable across the world, then we're there in the next year."

A new sunspot (AR3153) is rotating over the sun's southeastern limb, and it is a big one. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is seeing at least two dark cores significantly wider than Earth. The entire group is inset in this magnetic map of the sun's surface taken by SDO during the early hours of Dec. 2nd.

It doesn’t require conscious effort, so many of us fail to remember the benefits of walking for health. But what happens if we stop walking on auto-pilot and start challenging our brains and bodies by walking backwards? Not only does this change of direction demand more of our attention, but it may also bring additional health benefits.

Physical activity doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether you’re regularly active or not, even a brisk ten-minute daily walk can deliver a host of health benefits and can count towards the World Health Organization’s recommended minimum of 150 minutes of aerobic activity a week.

Yet walking is more complicated than many of us realise. Remaining upright requires coordination between our visual, vestibular (sensations linked to movements such as twisting, spinning or moving fast) and proprioceptive (awareness of where our bodies are in space) systems. When we walk backwards, it takes longer for our brains to process the extra demands of coordinating these systems. However, this increased level of challenge brings with it increased health benefits, to both mind and body.

We currently have six numbered sunspot regions on the sun’s Earth-facing side that have produced 10 C flares. I had just gottten off from work about an hour before this happened I was changing out of my work clothes when I heard an odd noise and my cell phone beeped because it detected “movement” in the cameras view when I reached for my phone I saw the bright light and it was coming between my neighbors houses across the street from me- by the time I realized I wasn’t looking at any kind of “airplane” we have in the World - I raced outside to get a look at it with my own eyes but unfortunately by then it was gone. But in the video it appeared to move slowish blink a few times then stop blinking and then it kept its flight path and it was gone. Aside from the odd noise I heard - like a higher pitched blowing sound. I lived in this neighborhood for many years and I have NEVER seen any kind of airplane or helicopters go as low as this thing did.

CHINESE ROCKET - Shenzhou-15

On Nov. 29th, China launched one of the most important missions of its young space program: Shenzhou-15. The spacecraft carried three astronauts to China's new Tiangong space station, where they would begin its permanent occupation. Amateur astronomer Zheng Zhi was in Beijing when the ascending spacecraft flew overhead, and he captured some spectacular video.

Physicists Create a Holographic Wormhole Using a Quantum Computer

Physicists have purportedly created the first-ever wormhole, a kind of tunnel theorized in 1935 by Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen that leads from one place to another by passing into an extra dimension of space.

The wormhole emerged like a hologram out of quantum bits of information, or “qubits,” stored in tiny superconducting circuits. By manipulating the qubits, the physicists then sent information through the wormhole, they reported in the journal Nature.

The team, led by Maria Spiropulu of the California Institute of Technology, implemented the novel “wormhole teleportation protocol” using Google’s quantum computer, a device called Sycamore housed at Google Quantum AI in Santa Barbara, California. With this first-of-its-kind “quantum gravity experiment on a chip,” as Spiropulu described it, she and her team beat a competing group of physicists who aim to do wormhole teleportation with IBM and Quantinuum’s quantum computers.

When Spiropulu saw the key signature indicating that qubits were passing through the wormhole, she said, “I was shaken.”

Describing the Genes Associated With the Sixth Sense

Sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch: We're all familiar with the five senses that allow us to experience our surroundings.

To perform coordinated movements, we rely on special sensory neurons in our muscles and joints. Without them, the brain wouldn't know what the rest of our body was doing. A team led by Niccolò Zampieri has studied their molecular markers to better understand how they work and describes the results in Nature Communications.

Equally important but much less well known is the sixth sense: "Its job is to collect information from the muscles and joints about our movements, our posture and our position in space, and then pass that on to our central nervous system," says Dr. Niccolò Zampieri, head of the Development and Function of Neural Circuits Lab at the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin. "This sense, known as proprioception, is what allows the central nervous system to send the right signals through motor neurons to muscles so that we can perform a specific movement."

This sixth sense—which, unlike the other five, is entirely unconscious—is what stops us from falling over in the dark, and what allows us to raise a cup of coffee to our mouth with our eyes shut in the morning.

But that's not all: "People without proprioception can't actually perform coordinated movements," says Zampieri. He and his team have now published an article in which they describe the molecular markers of the cells involved in this sixth sense. The findings should help researchers to better understand how proprioceptive sensory neurons (pSN) work.

Star clusters tend to host more hot Jupiters than average, but why? A team of astronomers have proposed a new solution, and it involves a lot of swapping of stellar neighbors.

When astronomers first began studying exoplanets they were surprised to find an entirely new class of object. These are the so-called hot Jupiters, which are planets the size of Jupiter orbiting closer to their star than Mercury does around the Sun. As the name suggests, this proximity greatly increases their temperatures. This causes them to become bloated and extended, and in some cases even rain iron.

A team of astronomers have put together an analysis that they believe is able to explain why star clusters host more hot Jupiters. The key is that stars in a cluster are packed together much more closely than average. They are so close that stars are bound to interact with their neighbors in some capacity. In some cases they can even capture one of their neighbors into an orbit. So even though the stars formed initially as solitary objects, they can become binary systems ...

Perhaps the most famous star cluster in the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen with the unaided eye even from the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident. The featured 11-hour exposure, taken from the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia, covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six of the sister stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer's eyesight.

There is something about this artwork and music that touches one's soul. This particular piece (as with the others found at the Ancient Arrow site) is very busy, almost overwhelming to the eye. I have tried to break it down for the eye and then put it back together again. The idea behind the paintings is that there is meaning in the symbols and there is communication that is going on at a deeper (subconscious?) level than we may readily perceive with our limited senses. The meaning of this piece is left up to the viewer and that is how it is and should be with all good art /music and myth I might add. The work, for me, has spiritual meaning, yet if I was asked to tell you what exactly this piece is about, I could not. There is something sensual here to my ears and eyes, a multi-course feast (if you will) that the Creator (James?) has brought together. This art and music is rumored to be from 'another universe.' It is modified (or somewhat diluted) from the original because we don't have the same capabilities to perceive it display it and/or recreate it that the beings who created it have developed over eons. For instance, it is said that the pictures move or come alive when viewed in the individual chambers where they were found. Few have witnessed it . It is music and art that supposedly activates long dormant parts of our DNA, DNA that was intentionally genetically manipulated or altered by beings from other parts of the universe many thousands of years ago. Some on earth might have called them "gods." This is an ongoing, unfolding project designed by it's creators, the Lyricus teaching order, to open us up to dimensions we have here-to-fore not experienced. I am told we are now on the threshold of being ready for at least part of the information it can impart. According to the Saitama Prefectural Police, their headquarters received repeated abusive calls from a man telling them they should be fired and calling them “tax thieves” and “big stupid a-holes”.

Even more brazen than the verbal abuse hurled at law enforcement was the fact that between 30 September and 8 October a total of 2,060 calls were made. That worked out to an average of one call for every six minutes and resulted in over 27 hours spent on the line with them.

On 28 November, the 67-year-old resident of Kawaguchi City was arrested for obstructing police business and admitted to the charges, saying: “I knew the cops would come for me someday.”

Why is the Moon so dusty? On Earth, rocks are weathered by wind and water, creating soil and sand. On the Moon, the history of constant micrometeorite bombardment has blasted away at the rocky surface creating a layer of powdery lunar soil or regolith. For the Apollo astronauts and their equipment, the pervasive, fine, gritty dust was definitely a problem. Fifty years ago, on the lunar surface in December 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan needed to repair one of their rover's fenders in an effort to keep the rooster tails of dust away from themselves and their gear. This picture reveals the wheel and fender of their dust covered rover along with the ingenious application of spare maps, clamps, and grey strips of duct tape.

Megan Folwell stood over a female Australian death adder (Acanthophis antarcticus), armed with a scalpel. The snake was dead, donated by a venom supply company. Very carefully, Folwell, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia, made an incision near the animal's tail. She was about to go where no scientists had gone before.

"I went into it not knowing what I was going to see,” said Folwell.

Until now, no one had taken the time to look for and describe a snake's clitoris. With the exception of birds, clitorises are found in every vertebrate lineage, including snakes' closest cousins, lizards. But when Folwell went looking for literature about the organ in serpents, she came up empty-handed. "It just didn't make sense to me," she said. "I knew there had to be something going on."

So she and her team decided to investigate. Their results, published Dec. 14 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, describe the structure of the forked "hemiclitoris" in snakes for the first time.

A close inspection will find the two small moons that shepherd the F-ring, the farthest ring discernable. A few months after this image was taken -- and after more than a decade of exploration and discovery -- the Cassini spacecraft ran low on fuel and was directed to enter Saturn's atmosphere, where it surely melted.

There’s a big birthday celebration on St. Helena Island as Jonathan the famed Seychelles giant tortoise celebrates 190 years.

Jonathan had a birthday party on the grounds of Plantation House, the governor’s residence where he lives. Islanders stopped by for photos, to offer him well wishes, and to buy special commemorative stamps featuring his image.

Sending one person such a message by mistake would be considered a serious error, but sending that message to thousands of patients is nothing short of a catastrophe. The Askern Medical Practice in Doncaster, UK has around 8,000 patients and it is believed that on December 23, it accidentally sent a cancer notification to all of them. The text informed recipients that they had “aggressive lung cancer with metastases” and advised them to fill out a special form for people with terminal diseases.

The group which runs the surgery told the BBC nobody was available for comment.

Compared to gigantic galaxies and star clusters, the Solar System is no more than just a speck of dust. There are thousands of stars within the radius of 100 light years from it. With some of them barely distinguishable against the dark abyss of space, others are so bright that they can be seen even if they are in other galaxies. Besides, there are a lot of invisible objects lurking in the depths of space, too – from massive brown dwarves to rocky exoplanets comparable to our Earth in size. Some of them may harbour life while others may pose a threat.

However, all this diversity is eclipsed by the scale of our galaxy. There are 200 billion stars and over a trillion planets at the very least to be found across its expanses. It is quite impossible to completely explore this great abundance of unique space objects. Today we will talk about some of the closest ones.

This line of stars is real. A little too faint to see with the unaided eye, Kemble’s Cascade of stars inspires awe when seen with binoculars. Like the Big Dipper, Kemble’s Cascade is an asterism, not a constellation. The asterism is visible in the northern sky toward the long-necked constellation of the Giraffe (Camelopardalis). This string of about 20 unrelated stars, each of similar brightness, spans over five times the angular width of the full moon. Stretching diagonally from the upper left to the lower right, Kemble's Cascade was popularized last century by astronomy enthusiast Lucian Kemble. The bright object near the top left of the image is the relatively compact Jolly Roger open cluster of stars, officially designated as NGC 1502.

2023 Welcomes Comet E3 ZTF

As in years previous, 2023 kicks off with another descent binocular comet, a fine object for northern hemisphere observers in January.

If you haven’t seen C/2022 E3 ZTF yet, you’ll soon have your chance. Discovered by the Zwicky Transient Survey searching for supernovae, E3 ZTF was first spotted as a +17th magnitude object gliding through the constellation of Aquila the Eagle on the night of March 2nd, 2022.

As of this writing, the comet is shining at magnitude +7 in the constellation Corona Borealis. This currently places it low to the northeast for northern hemisphere observers in the early morning hours. The good news is, the view improves in late January into early February, as the comet heads towards circumpolar and stays above the horizon all night.

Transparency in animals is a complex form of camouflage involving mechanisms that reduce the scattering and absorption of light throughout the organism. Many species have evolved transparency, but it is particularly challenging for vertebrates because red blood cells attenuate light. In a new study, researchers from Duke University and elsewhere found that glassfrogs are able to maintain a high level of transparency because a large proportion of their red blood cells are ‘hidden’ in the liver.

Studies have shown that ice fish and larval eels achieve transparency by not producing hemoglobin and red blood cells. But glassfrogs use an alternative strategy.

“Glassfrogs overcome this challenge by essentially hiding red blood cells from view,” said study’s first author Dr. Carlos Taboada, a researcher in the Biology Department and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. “They almost pause their respiratory system during the day, even at high temperatures.”

Astronomers studying archival observations of powerful explosions called short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have detected light patterns indicating the brief existence of a superheavy neutron star shortly before it collapsed into a black hole. This fleeting, massive object likely formed from the collision of two neutron stars.

“We looked for these signals in 700 short GRBs detected with NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory,” said Cecilia Chirenti, a researcher at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who presented the findings at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle.

A neutron star forms when the core of a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses. This produces a shock wave that blows away the rest of the star in a supernova explosion. Neutron stars typically pack more mass than our Sun into a ball about the size of a city, but above a certain mass, they must collapse into black holes.

At about 8 p.m. local time on mid-January evenings, the Pleiades open star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45 is positioned high in the southern sky.

The rest of its home constellation, Taurus the Bull, will be situated below the cluster. Visually, the Pleiades are composed of medium-bright, hot blue stars named Asterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone. In Greek mythology, those characters were the daughters of Atlas, and half sisters of the Hyades. They are indeed related — born of the same primordial gas cloud.

The scene may look like a fantasy, but it's really Iceland. The rock arch is named Gatklettur and located on the island's northwest coast. Some of the larger rocks in the foreground span a meter across. The fog over the rocks is really moving waves averaged over long exposures. The featured image is a composite of several foreground and background shots taken with the same camera and from the same location on the same night last November. The location was picked for its picturesque foreground, but the timing was planned for its colorful background: aurora. The spiral aurora, far behind the arch, was one of the brightest seen in the astrophotographer's life. The coiled pattern was fleeting, though, as auroral patterns waved and danced for hours during the cold night. Far in the background were the unchanging stars, with Earth's rotation causing them to appear to slowly circle the sky's northernmost point near Polaris.

On Feb. 1, a bright-green comet named C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will make a close approach to Earth for the first time in 50,000 years. Swooping within 26 million miles (42 million kilometers) of our planet, the comet will offer a rare night-sky spectacle last seen when modern humans shared our planet with Neanderthals.

But you don't have to wait until February for your chance to glimpse the comet; it is already visible in the late night and early morning sky. Stargazers have been following the comet's path for weeks now and got a particularly good look at it on Jan. 12, when the comet made its closest approach to the sun (a phenomenon called perihelion).

The comet itself isn't green, but its head does appear to glow green thanks to a somewhat rare chemical reaction. The glow likely comes from diatomic carbon (C2) — a simple molecule made of two carbon atoms bonded together. When ultraviolet light from the sun breaks this molecule down, it emits a greenish glow that can last for several days.

Afterward, humans may never see it again: The latest calculations suggest that the comet is moving on a parabolic orbit, meaning it is not bound to our solar system and is unlikely to come near it again.

This is a disconnection event: A piece of Comet ZTF's tail has been pinched off and is being carried away by the solar wind.

Blame space weather. CMEs hitting comets can cause magnetic reconnection in comet tails, sometimes ripping them off entirely. NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft watched this happen to Comet Encke in April 2007: movie. This month, multiple CMEs have swept past Comet ZTF as a result of surging solar activity. One of them is responsible for the disconnection event.

US Government Has Received More Than 350 New UFO Reports

Washington CNN — The US government has received over 350 new reports of what the US government terms “unidentified aerial phenomenon,” commonly known as UFOs, since March of 2021 – roughly half of which are so far unexplained, according to a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released on Thursday.

According to the report, the Pentagon office responsible for tracking and studying the sightings has preliminarily identified 163 of the reports as “balloon or balloon-entities.” A handful of other reports have been attributed to drones, birds, weather events or airborne debris like plastic bags.

But “initial characterization does not mean positively resolved or unidentified,” the report cautioned. And the remaining 171 reported sightings of UAPs or UFOs continue to be unexplained by the US government.

“Some of these uncharacterized UAP appear to have demonstrated unusual flight characteristics or performance capabilities and require further analysis,” the report found.

In short, the intelligence community and the Pentagon still appear to have no explanation for at least some of a series of mysterious flying objects that have been seen moving through restricted military airspace over the last several decades. The majority of the new reports came from US Navy and Air Force pilots and operators “who witnessed UAP during the course of their operational duties and reported the events,” according to the report.

After eight years, it returns to the same place in our sky on about the same date. Peru Closes Machu Picchu Amid Anti-Government Protests

More than 50 people have died as demonstrations escalate and police crack down on dissent

In the wake of escalating political unrest, Peru has officially closed Machu Picchu, as well as the Inca Trail leading up to it, officials announced over the weekend. The country’s Culture Ministry said the move is meant “to protect the safety of tourists and the population in general.”

More than 400 tourists were stranded at the historic site on Saturday after anti-government protesters damaged nearby railways. They were eventually evacuated via train to Cusco, according to a statement from the Tourism Ministry.

The demonstrations began last month after former President Pedro Castillo was impeached and arrested for trying to dissolve Congress. His former vice president, Dina Boluarte, was sworn into office on December 7.

Real-Life 'Terminator 2' Robot Melts to Escape Jail, Solidifies on Command

Scientists have created a tiny "Terminator 2"-like robot that can melt and resolidify itself on command, enabling it to perform difficult tasks and escape from confined spaces.

To make the phase-shifting robot, scientists embedded microscopic chunks of magnetic neodymium, boron and iron into liquid gallium (a metal with a low melting point) and left it to solidify. And just like the spine-chilling T-1000 from "Terminator 2," the robot has shape-shifting abilities that make it an excellent escape artist. By using magnets to command their miniature creation to melt, the researchers recorded the robot transforming into an amorphous puddle to slither through the bars of a cage before miraculously reconstituting itself on the other side. The researchers published their findings Jan 25 in the journal Matter.

The researchers see several potential medical and technological applications for their robot. So far, it has passed multiple tests: fixing circuits by entering tough-to-reach spots and then transforming itself into solder; melting into a screw socket and then solidifying to become a mechanical screw; and removing a foreign object from a model stomach.

"Giving robots the ability to switch between liquid and solid states endows them with more functionality," lead author Chengfeng Pan, an engineer at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, said in the statement. "Now, we're pushing this material system in more practical ways to solve some very specific medical and engineering problems."

SpaceX and Astronomers Come to Agreement on Reducing Starlink Astronomy Impact

With the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, as with the Hubble Space Telescope before it, space-based astronomy gets a lot of attention, but ground-based observatories are the real workhorses of space science, and they have a really big problem: satellites.

Specifically, the problem is the various ways satellites can interfere with an observation, whether it be radio, optical, or infrared. To help mitigate these issues, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and SpaceX, operators of the fast-growing Starlink internet satellite network, have come to an agreement that they hope will reduce interference with astronomers in an increasingly crowded night sky, according to an NSF statement.

SpaceX has begun working on redesigns for its second-generation Starlink satellites, including solar array mitigation, dielectric mirror film and a new kind of black paint for its satellites that it hopes will reduce brightness. The company also agreed to look at just how much of an effect the lasers that NSF facilities use to sharpen their instruments' vision actually affect the operation of a satellite. Observatories had been turning off their lasers whenever a Starlink satellite was nearby, but that won't be necessary any longer, according to the statement.

SpaceX is addressing the concerns of radio astronomers as well as optical. The company has agreed to a number of coordination efforts since Starlink satellites use a radio band very close to that used for radio astronomy. In addition, the company has agreed to study the impact of Starlink terminals located near the Very Large Array in New Mexico and the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia.

"Boo! Its the Boogeyman! To some, the dark shape looks like a mythical boogeyman! Scientifically, Lynds' Dark Nebula (LDN) 1622 appears against a faint background of glowing hydrogen gas only visible in long telescopic exposures of the region! In contrast, the brighter reflection nebula vdB 62 is more easily seen just above and to the right of center in the featured image! LDN 1622 lies near the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, close on the sky to Barnard's Loop, a large cloud surrounding the rich complex of emission nebulae found in the Belt and Sword of Orion! With swept-back outlines, the obscuring dust of LDN 1622 is thought to lie at a similar distance, perhaps 1,500 light-years away! At that distance, this 2-degree wide field of view would span about 60 light-years! Bull’s balls are, I believe, more properly known as prairie oysters. More cattle on the prairie than in the mountains.

I’ve never had them, only read about them in cowboy stories, but I always thought that they were eaten fresh and raw, right after bulls were made into steers.
