“Take flight, travel on the very air. Kiss the Hand of God if you want. But don’t fly too close to the Sun, like that Greek guy did, at least during daylight.” - me and professor Simpson.

This vid has only a minor ground loop incident of a Dyke Delta, and the BD-5 jet aborted its takeoff. No Icarus-level misjudgement and tradgedy here, but word does need to get out.

Hey check out that fat spawn of a (iirc) Quickie (Burt Rutan homebuilt design). Rutan’s original Quickie, and I think a later variant, were “conventional” gear, taildraggers. The front two wheels are mounted on either end of the front wing. This evolution uses a normal current standard tricycle gear. Solves a couple problems.

Me I’d make mine bigger, dozen friends and fuel to Vegas, once I get rich and famous enough. The double lifting wings, different than the normal layout where the tail feathers force downward, is more efficient, faster or uses less gas. I could get some turbofans and make me a bizjet. But I’d sweep the wings, more speed to get some CEOs onboard.

Not only do our bodies emit heat as a light we can't see, a number of cellular reactions may generate photons of light in a visible part of the spectrum. Weirder still, this 'unearthly glow' stops when we die.

Astronauts Simulate Deep Space With Deep Caves

A team of Chinese astronauts have successfully undergone a round of harsh training under a CAVES training program administered in a mountainous area of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, which has been the country's first such program similar to the Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behavior and performance Skills (CAVES) training organized by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The Sailors

Astronaut, Cosmonaut and Taikonaut are all terms for the same thing, someone who travels into space. The common part of all three naut which comes from the Greek for sailor. The Americans, Canadian, Europeans and the Japanese use the term Astronaut meaning Star Sailor with the first part meaning star. Those three terms are the most commonly used/heard terms for those who travel into space.

Lesser known terms include Spationaut and Vyomanaut. Some Europeans use Spationaut, mainly the French to indicate an European astronaut. A Vyomanaut is used by some Indians for those who travel in the Indian Space Program.

Russia uses the term Cosmonaut, meaning Universe Sailor and the Chinese use the word Taikonaut meaning Space Sailor.

Astronaut: NASA Basic Requirements

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/aDaw7ATYubKeBXyWXU4pW4-650-80.jpg

Being an astronaut is a tremendous commitment. Astronaut candidates — who tend to be selected in their 30s and 40s — usually leave prestigious careers for a chance at being an astronaut, starting again at the bottom of the rung. Training means long days at work and lots of travel. There's also no guarantee they'll make it into space.

While the public mostly pays attention to astronauts while they're in space, in reality the astronauts will spend only a fraction of their careers up high. Most of their time will be spent training and supporting other missions.

First, the astronaut candidates will have about two years of basic training, where they will learn survival training, language, technical skills and other things they need to be an astronaut. Upon graduating, new astronauts can be assigned to a space mission, or assigned to technical roles in the Astronaut Office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/LBwtEKZUJ7qAsme4Yptehd-970-80.jpg

Here's what it takes to be a NASA astronaut and what happens after the selection.

The agency's basic requirements are a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, followed by three years of professional experience (or 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft).

Candidates also must pass NASA's rigorous physical examination, as well as learn to speak Russian.

There are many other skills that can be an asset to selection, such as scuba diving, wilderness experience, leadership experience and facility with other languages (such as French, Spanish, and Russian, which all astronauts are required to learn today.)

The new astronauts may begin their careers traveling to the International Space Station, or they may find themselves flying farther. It all depends on where United States space policy goes in the coming years, and what programs NASA finds itself involved in.

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uE7AcSAdstZNgB8NJ8xFie-970-80.jpg

While the astronaut candidates selected by NASA will be principally working with that agency, they also will find themselves embedded in a network of international partnerships. Along with commercial partners in the United States developing spaceflight hardware and the various NASA centers that work in human spaceflight, there are 16 nations participating in the International Space Station — each with its own realm of expertise.

Robot Smaller Than a Grain of Salt Can ‘Sense, Think, Act’

http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1SdbXV.img?w=768&h=512&m=6

For decades scientists have dreamed of building a microrobot less than 1 millimeter in size, a barrier that corresponds to the smallest units of our biology.

For comparison, a human hair has a diameter of about 70 microns, while human cells are about 20 to 40 microns across.

Solving a technical challenge that has stymied science for 40 years, researchers have built a robot with an onboard computer, sensors and a motor, the whole assembly less than 1 millimeter in size — smaller than a grain of salt.

The feat, accomplished by a partnership of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Michigan, advances medicine toward a future that might see tiny robots sent into the human body to rewire damaged nerves, deliver medicines to precise areas, and determine the health of a patient’s cells without surgery.

“It’s the first tiny robot to be able to sense, think and act,” said Marc Miskin, assistant professor of electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and an author of a paper describing the work published this week in the journalScience Robotics.

The device, billed as the world’s smallest robot able to make decisions for itself, represents a major step toward a goal once rooted in science fiction.

In the 1960s, the story and movie “Fantastic Voyage” imagined a medical team placed aboard a submarine and shrunk to the size of a microbe. The microscopic medical crew was then injected into the body of a dying man in order to destroy an inoperable blood clot.

During the summer, the scientists invited a group of high school students to come in and test the new microrobots. The students were able to track the movements of the robots using a special low-cost microscope.

“They loved it,” said Miskin. “It was definitely a little bit challenging at first, just getting oriented to working with something that small. But that’s part of the appeal. Once they got the hang of it, they were all in.” Miskin said the version of the robot the students used cost only about $10.

Researchers are working now to develop the microrobot so that it can work in saltwater, on land and in other environments.

Artemis 2 Update: NASA Eyes February Launch to the Moon

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/t6iUGSZgkNruk439TXcUKZ-970-80.jpg

NASA's first mission to take humans to the moon in half a century is creeping ever closer.

The space agency has announced that the rollout of its Artemis 2 Space Launch System rocket and Orion Module began Saturday (Jan. 17), ahead of a launch as early as Feb. 6.

Embarking from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the 11 million-pound (5 million kilograms) stack will be transported at a speed of about 1 mph (1.6 km/h along a 4-mile (6.4 kilometers) route. The site will be streamed live on NASA's Youtube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrVnsO_rdew)

"We are moving closer to Artemis II, with rollout just around the corner," Lori Glaze, the acting associate administrator for NASA's Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, said in a statement released Jan. 9. "We have important steps remaining on our path to launch and crew safety will remain our top priority at every turn, as we near humanity's return to the Moon."

Artemis 2 is the first crewed spaceflight in the Artemis Program, which aims to send humans back to the moon for the first time since 1972. Four astronauts will take a 10-day flight around the moon and back to Earth, testing systems ahead of the Artemis 3 mission, which aims to deliver astronauts to the lunar surface by 2028.

THE CME HAS ARRIVED--A SEVERE STORM IS UNDERWAY

Arriving earlier than expected, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 19th (1930 UT). The impact has sparked a G4-class (severe) geomagnetic storm. Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras after local nightfall. There is a chance that this storm could escalate to category G5 (extreme) in the hours and days ahead.

THIS WAS A VERY FAST ONE

The CME that struck Earth today crossed the sun-Earth divide in only ~25 hours. That's fast. For comparison, most CMEs take 3 or 4 days to get here. The high speed of this CME (~1660 km/s) places it in the top few percent of all CMEs observed in the SOHO era.

Since the launch of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) in 1995, SOHO coronagraphs have cataloged thousands of coronal mass ejections. The vast majority are slower than 1,000 km/s. The fastest, observed on July 23, 2012, was clocked at 2,900 to 3,500 km/s; it narrowly missed Earth.

The Onboard UFO Encounters of Leo and Mike Dworshak

http://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51CS5CKQ9EL._SL500_.jpg

This is an amazing story that gets weirder as it goes on. The brothers had 12 encounters.

One of the most astounding cases of UFO contact is that of Leo and Mike Dworshak, two brothers from the small town of Killdeer, North Dakota. In the summer of 1932, Leo (age 12) and Mike (age 8) were hiking near their home when they came upon a landed silver flying saucer. At that time, neither of them had heard of UFOs (few had!) so they had no idea what they were seeing, but they knew it was unusual. They became even more intrigued when a door opened and three men wearing jumpsuits emerged. The boys tried to move closer, but found their path forward blocked by an invisible forcefield. The men walked around briefly and then returned inside the craft. It was getting dark, so the brothers returned home. This was to be the first of an escalating series of contacts ...

Whatever you do ...

Don't Pick Up The Frozen Iguanas

FLORIDA - Morning temperatures in Jacksonville and Tallahassee dipped as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, while Orlando hit the mid-30s, and Miami fell to the upper 40s. All are temperatures cold enough to temporarily freeze an iguana.

Miami Zoo Communications Director Ron Magill is delighted to expand on this little-known-outside-the-area phenomena.

Published 17th January 2026 (4:07)

Reptiles like iguanas are cold-blooded—or ectothermic—reptiles that rely on external environmental conditions to regulate their body temperature. By comparison, warm-blooded or endothermic animals like humans and other mammals have a more consistent body temperature. Since the outside temperature has such a drastic effect on their bodies, cold-blooded animals often adapt their behavior as a response. They may bask in the sun to warm up or find shade to cool down and achieve a more balanced body temperature.

http://www.popsci.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iguana.png?w=1440&h=810

When it gets cold, iguanas may also enter a dormant state called cold-stunning or freezing since they are not adapted to life in colder temperatures. Iguanas can start to slow down if the temperature gets below 50 degrees, and stun once they hit the 40s or 30s.

After they fall from a tree, they may appear to be dead. However, their critical body functions will all still be working and they will continue to breathe. Once temperatures rise, they can jump back into action as if nothing happened.

Iguanas can grow up to seven feet long and weigh upwards of 30 pounds, so it is best to be cautious when walking under palm trees in colder weather.

All it takes is one to be bitten, here that is Bob Burnquist, then the resonance begins. Heck even the filmer Josh Dirksen hucked himself, per the credits.

Ramanujan’s 100-year-old Pi Formulae Still Revealing the Universe

http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AA1Swdsa.img?w=1280&h=720&m=4&q=68

Most people first encounter the irrational number π (pi) -- commonly approximated as 3.14 and extending infinitely without repeating -- during school lessons about circles. In recent decades, advances in computing have pushed this familiar constant far beyond the classroom, with powerful supercomputers now calculating pi to trillions of decimal places.

Researchers have now uncovered an unexpected twist. Physicists at the Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) report that mathematical formulas developed a century ago to compute pi are closely linked to some of today's most important ideas in fundamental physics. These connections appear in theoretical descriptions of percolation, fluid turbulence, and even certain features of black holes.

http://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/indiatoday/images/story/202512/srinivasa-ramanujan-041552478-16x9_0.jpg?VersionId=dDl8JhbhXWEf2gyE0Vj4nDM3e7DJSQsm

In 1914, shortly before leaving Madras for Cambridge, renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan published a paper presenting 17 different formulas for calculating pi. These expressions were strikingly efficient, allowing pi to be computed much faster than existing techniques of the time. Despite containing only a small number of mathematical terms, the formulas produced an impressive number of accurate digits.

Their impact has endured. Ramanujan's methods became foundational to modern mathematical and computational approaches for calculating pi, including those used by today's most advanced machines. "Scientists have computed pi up to 200 trillion digits using an algorithm called the Chudnovsky algorithm," says Aninda Sinha, Professor at CHEP and senior author of the study. "These algorithms are actually based on Ramanujan's work."

The 5 Worst Ideas of the 21st Century

http://saratogatodaynewspaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iStock-2184289004-1024x683.jpg

Social media began with the best intentions - but it soon went sour. Platforms that once fostered connection are now driven by an endless desire to monopolise our time. From the endless scroll to ragebait content, social media is no longer designed to connect us with friends and family - but to profit from our attention. And that’s not to mention the damaging political influence it can have. As countries and governments move to act against it, is there a good solution to these problems?

Bitcoin is one big disaster for the environment. Mining bitcoin requires an inordinate amount of energy - and that cost only increases as more bitcoin is mined. It’s also a terrible investment these days, with some experts suggesting you’d be better off buying a load of Pokémon cards. Adding to that its role in fuelling crime on the dark web - and it becomes a strong contender for worst idea of the 21st century.

http://coinedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Basics_of_BTC_Mining_Understanding_the_Process_of_Bitcoin_Mining-355x200.jpg

http://cdn.banklesstimes.com/bt/content/uploads/2024/10/a-photo-of-a-bitcoin-mining-operation-there-are-mu-GdMLhcb3TWm1K4jfq9c4tg-QGiKrGplTR-VFP64dbBD6g.jpeg

Carbon off-sets - another well intentioned solution to the climate crisis that’s gone horribly wrong. The idea is you can lessen the environmental impact of your actions, by off-setting the damage. Maybe you take a long-haul flight, but you plant a tree in return. The trouble is, not only does this give people permission to keep polluting the environment, it’s not even clear if offsetting actually works. But perhaps it’s not all bad?

Effective altruism is a surprising addition to the list, given that it’s meant to be a way of ensuring money goes to only the best causes. But judging which charities deserve donations above others is much more difficult than it seems. And part of the effective altruism movement suggests people should earn as much money as possible so they can one day give it away - which can obviously end badly. And then there are those who have taken it too far - ruining their life.

Biofuels are one seemingly good fix for environmental damage. The promise of alternative fuels, like wind farms, natural gases, hydrogen and biofuels looks good with text and green illustrations. But it turns out they probably do a lot more damage than good. Biofuels in particular require massive amounts of farmland to produce, which alone is highly polluting. Add to that the fact they’re driving up prices at the supermarket - perhaps there’s a better way to stop the climate from warming?

NASA is Flying a Piece of the Wright Brothers' Plane to the Moon

http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/85ERUEZG9AWoTZFeGFYDbn-650-80.jpg

NASA's Artemis 2 mission won't just send a quartet of astronauts around the moon — a trove of aerospace artifacts will make the trip as well.

A piece of the Wright Brothers' plane will fly on Artemis 2's Orion spacecraft, for example, as will an American flag that reached orbit on the first and final space shuttle missions.

"Historical artifacts flying aboard Artemis 2 reflect the long arc of American exploration and the generations of innovators who made this moment possible," NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said in a statement. "This mission will bring together pieces of our earliest achievements in aviation, defining moments from human spaceflight and symbols of where we're headed next."

The mementos placed on Orion will commemorate the historic nature of the mission, which takes place during the year of the United States' 250th anniversary.

The Wright Brothers made the first-ever successful powered flight back in 1903, getting their Wright Flyer (also known as Flyer 1) aloft over the dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Artemis 2 will carry a small piece of the plane, a 1-square-inch (6.5 square centimeters) swatch of muslin fabric that's on loan from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

Artemis 2 won't be the first trip to deep space for a piece of the Wright Flyer, by the way: A different swatch of the pioneering plane flew to Mars aboard NASA's Ingenuity helicopter, which became the first aircraft ever to ply the skies of a world beyond Earth. (The artifact, like Ingenuity, remains on Mars today.)

Artemis 2 Astronauts Enter Quarantine Ahead of Historic Moon Launch

From CSA:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPSMWoqCc2Z/

NASA just took another big step toward launching its next crewed moon mission.

The four astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission went into quarantine on Friday (Jan. 23) in Houston, keeping everything on track for a possible liftoff early next month.

"This period, called the health stabilization program, typically starts about 14 days before launch," NASA officials said in a statement on Friday. "Beginning quarantine now preserves flexibility as teams work toward potential opportunities in the February launch period."

Artemis 2 will send NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, on a roughly 10-day flight around the moon aboard an Orion capsule. The mission will not land on the lunar surface or even enter orbit around Earth's nearest neighbor. Still, it will be the first crewed flight to lunar realms since Apollo 17 back in 1972.

As NASA's Friday statement noted, the agency is eyeing a liftoff as soon as February. There are five potential launch dates next month: Feb. 6-8 and Feb. 10-11. Two other windows are open if Artemis 2 can't get off the ground in February — one in March (March 6-9 and March 11) and one in April (April 1, April 3-6 and April 30).

5 Ways Birds Stay Warm When Temperatures Drop

http://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/first-snow-royalty-free-image-1769195904.pjpeg?crop=1.00xw:1.00xh;0,0&resize=1800

When winter settles in, the once-bustling birdlife quiets down. The early morning songs fade, and the evening skies grow still. Yet, despite the chill, birds have a remarkable set of tricks that help them stay snug through the coldest months.

:sun:

Soaking Up the Sun

Just like people, birds take advantage of sunshine. On bright winter days, they turn their feathers toward the light, absorbing warmth and storing a little extra heat before the cold night returns.

Feathery Insulation

http://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/gettyimages-2170988709-6900de2466ec9.jpg?resize=980

Beneath the outer layer of sleek feathers lies a soft, fluffy coat of down. This down traps warm air close to a bird’s body, acting much like a thermal jacket. By puffing up their feathers, birds increase the insulating air space, making them look round and fluffy. To prevent heat loss, they often tuck their beaks and legs into their feathers while resting.

Fueling Up

Winter is a constant hunt for energy. Birds spend daylight hours searching for calorie-dense foods rich in fat and protein—vital fuel that keeps them alive through chilly nights. Some, like chickadees, eat more than a third of their body weight each day just to maintain warmth. They often feed heavily before sunset or before an incoming storm to build up these energy reserves.

http://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/gettyimages-2176491068-6900de3be21b9.jpg?resize=980

“Mini-Hibernation” and Shivering

Certain bird species can enter a mild state of torpor, lowering their body temperature, heart rate, and metabolism to save energy overnight. When morning arrives, they generate heat by shivering—tiny muscle contractions that help restore body warmth. They will also shiver during the day to warm up if necessary.

Strength in Numbers

http://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/gettyimages-1385746659-6900de6245dd3.jpg?resize=980

Many small (and larger) birds survive the season by roosting (aka cuddling) together. They crowd into sheltered spaces—tree holes, birdhouses, or thick shrubs—sharing their collective body heat. Chickadees, finches, bluebirds, and nuthatches are among the many species that rely on these cozy communal gatherings to make it through the winter nights.

He is imo a decent guy, having talked to him in his YT comments.

Refocusing, Sun Tzu comes to mind, and ET aliens. We humans have used STzu’s methods for ages, that’s where he got them from. I wonder if way-old ETs first or ever got their advantage by techniques of deception, and if so how the level of deception has changed, in their ways.

Cool to see. I’d had an idea how tying worked, but first time seeing it go. Impressive fine work, speaking from experience in different fine crafting. Thanks.

How are the designs done? Are they mostly copies of actual prey insects? Do fish eventually stop going for designs, like do they learn what’s fake/dangerous, or are advised though RSheldrake’s Morphic Resonance? How effective are novel fake insect designs?

Other question, are FPV drones used, either for visual recon or even to dip/multi-dip a fly near a seen lunker? If not in a survival situation, might not be sporting, but I’m still curious.

Cheers from cold Alberta.
