Today In Space | June 8: X-15 Makes First Glide Flight

NASA's rocket-powered X-15 experimental plane made its first glide flight (June 8, 1959).

The X-15 rocket plane was part of a series of experimental hypersonic aircrafts.

This flight marked the beginning of almost a decade of flight research that explored the altitudes and hypersonic speed at the edge of space. At max speed, the X-15 would fly at Mach 6.7, or 4520 miles per hour!

The X-15 program had a total of 12 test pilots, including Neil Armstrong, between 1959 and 1968, making 199 flights in the process. The aircraft flew over a period of almost 10 years and with a max altitude of 67 miles. It was even able to reach the edge of outer space in the 1960s.

Europa is an intriguing icy moon that orbits Jupiter. It is a little bit smaller than the Earth's moon but may have an ocean of water under an icy surface that may have a rocky sea floor. The surface of Europa has many fractures criss-crossing it. It whips around Jupiter in about 3 1/2 days and has tides that stretch it due to the variation of Jupiter's gravity since Europa is in a slightly elliptical orbit. Observations of Europa have indicated there are "warmer" areas on its surface and observation with the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that there are salty water plumes venting occasionally near the southern portion
of the body. All of these factors suggest that Europa might be an interesting place to look for life. Scientists would like to have a mission to explore Europa and land on the surface.

Teacher, speaker, and author Dr. Darrell Wolfe has over 35 years experience in natural medicine. In the first half, he discussed the domino effect of disease and how people have disconnected from who and what they really are. A lot of the population, particularly as they get older, have an accumulation of parasites and fungus, and their healthy bacteria has often been depleted by antibiotics, he cited. Further, refined and processed foods create inflammation and can lead to such ailments as arthritis, Alzheimer's, dementia, colitis, and auto-immune diseases, he suggested.

Most people only experience about 2% joy throughout their day, he noted, because of dysfunctional belief systems they are clinging onto."Every physical problem has an 85% minimal emotional attachment to it," he declared, adding that if you can't process a negative emotion it will be stored in inflamed or diseased tissue. By repeating positive thoughts and beliefs in one's mind, you can reprogram the way you think, he detailed. Wolfe described his deep tissue technique-- pulling fibers apart, which is geared to reduce or eliminate fibroids, scar tissue, and many physical problems such as those located in the knee, neck, or shoulders.

In the latter half, acclaimed nuclear engineer and author, James Mahaffey, recounted forgotten nuclear endeavors throughout history, including how nuclear rocket engines were going to be used to send a team to Mars back in the 1960s. He also detailed recent mishaps like Fukushima, and threats like the "dirty bomb." The materials for a "dirty bomb" are available on the black market, yet the dangers are most pronounced for the people working on it before it explodes, he reported. The explosion and radiation from such a bomb are not likely to be that deadly, he continued, yet the psychology of such an attack could make people want to entirely avoid the location in which it struck for years after.

He detailed possibilities for interstellar travel, and how nuclear science could be a key factor, in tandem with quantum mechanics. Mahaffey also spoke about his interview of an Air Force scientist who worked on Project Mogul (what the military claimed was behind the Roswell incident in 1947). The scientist said he had developed a microphone that could travel in an aerostat (large balloon) up to 40,000 ft. in the atmosphere in order to detect atomic tests being conducted in the Soviet Union. The microphone project was code named "Flying Disc," he added.

Today In Space | June 12 1967 : Venera 4 Launched On A Mission To Venus

50 years ago today, Venera 4 was launched into space on a mission to Venus, thus becoming the first spacecraft to transmit data from another planet’s atmosphere.

This was a Russian probe designed to study the atmosphere of Venus down to the surface.

At first, scientists believed that the probe transmitted until contact with the surface of Venus. But in actuality, transmissions ended at an altitude of 16 miles (or 27 km) when the extreme temperatures and high atmospheric pressure crushed the probe.

But from the data collected by Venera 4, we learned that the surface temperatures were 500 degrees Celsius and the pressure was 75 times more than the Earth's. It also found that Venus' atmosphere was composed of 90 – 95% carbon dioxide with no nitrogen.

Dave Shock - Satellite UFO Research | Michael Kimelman - Wall St. Confessions

The first satellite for UFO research is being planned and intended to search low-Earth orbit for any sign of unidentified objects. In the first half, Dave Shock, the project coordinator of CubeSat For Disclosure joined Richard Syrett to discuss his team's mission to bring this satellite to reality. Shock says the shoebox-sized device will contain two cameras, "one pointing down and one pointing up." He believes that the crowd-funded project has a good chance to photograph anomalous objects in space, as well as measure any fluctuations in magnetic fields or radiation readings with other instruments on board. It is scheduled to launched in early 2018 into a polar orbit at 193 miles above the planet. The satellite will be aloft for approximately three months until the orbit decays and it burns up in the atmosphere.
Shock is hoping that the satellite not only captures photos and other data, but will also report on any UFOs and allow ground-based observers to confirm sightings in real time, since it will be sending live photos every five seconds while it remains in space. Because of its orbit over the north and south poles, it will be able to image the entire surface of the Earth as the planet rotates beneath. By U.S. law, any private satellite can be turned off by the government "in time of national emergency," but Shock says that this has never been invoked and doesn’t expect this to happen with his group's device. He believes that the project "may be the beginning of something really big."


Michael Kimelman had a good run as the co-founder of a hedge fund. But he was arrested as part of a huge insider trading case, and while he was offered a "sweetheart" no-jail probation plea, he refused, maintaining his innocence. In the second half, Kimelman also discussed his time as an inmate after nearly two years behind bars, reflecting on his experiences before incarceration – rubbing elbows with financial titans and major figures in sports and entertainment, and making and losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in daily gambles on Wall Street. Kimelman began his career as a lawyer in a prestigious firm in New York City, until he became frustrated with the work and turned to a college buddy who worked in a proprietary trading company. Soon, he was a trader at DayTech, an organization with what he called an "eat what you kill" philosophy, which meant that employees were only paid if they made money on stock trades.
With a little experience under his belt, Kimelman then co-founded his own hedge fund company, Incremental Capital. The company became riddled with informants and taps on phones, emails, and instant messages in an effort to discover any wrongdoing. The FBI burst into his home at 5AM on Novermber 5, 2009, and arrested Kimelman for insider trading. He blamed the charges and subsequent jail time his former hedge fund friends and a sense of revenge directed at Wall Street by the U.S. Government as well as the public outcry after the economic collapse of late 2008. Rather than go after the real source of the disaster (such as mortgage fraud) Kimelman maintains that government investigators and prosecutors were engaged in "career calculus" to concentrate on easy and popular cases to make them look good to both the public and employers when they left government service. He also decried the concept of "criminal conspiracy," which he says is often used in a way that is "a pretty outrageous corruption of civil liberties."

She co-edited eight symposium proceedings, has been a State Section Director for Ohio MUFON, was a founding member of the Mid-Ohio Research Associates (MORA) and its journal editor.

Her latest book is titled UFOs Today: 70 Years of Lies & Misinformation. In this interview, we cover the contents of the book, including the decades of work Irena has put in investigating the UFO phenomenon. Her professional work has also included working with organizations that are alleged to have been part of secret government UFO research. We talk about insights she may have gained on whether these rumors are true.

Atra-Hasis ("exceedingly wise") is the protagonist and namesake of an 18th century BCE Akkadian epic. The Atra-Hasis tablets include both a creation myth and a flood account, which is one of three surviving Babylonian deluge stories. The oldest known copy of the epic tradition concerning Atrahasis can be dated to the reign of Hammurabi’s great-grandson, Ammi-Saduqa (1646–1626 BCE), but various Old Babylonian fragments exist.

According to one version of the Sumerian king list, in the years just before the Flood swept over the earth, Ubara-Tutu (who is named as the father of Atrahasis in Gilgamesh) was king of Shuruppak, where some of the earliest writings known to the entire world have been discovered. According to a different version of the Sumerian king list, Atrahasis, called there by his Sumerian name Zuisudra, himself ruled the city Shuruppak, preceded by his father who was named like the city. A wisdom composition known as The Instructions of Shuruppak is now attested on clay tablets from the Early Dynastic period in the early third millennium BC, and contains sage advice given by Shuruppak to his son Zuisudra. Thus, Atrahasis was a notable figure even at the dawn of history.

Today In Space – June 18th 1983 : Sally Ride Becomes America's First Woman In Space

Published 18th June 2017

Astronaut Sally K. Ride became America’s first woman in space as she and four colleagues blasted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger.

Tasks on the mission included launching communications satellites for Indonesia and Canada. The astronauts also conducted the first successful satellite deployment and retrieval in space using the shuttle’s robotic arm. During the flight, Ride became the first woman to operate the shuttle’s robotic arm. They returned to Earth on June 24th.

Ride also became the first American woman to travel a second time when she launched on another Challenger mission, STS-41-G, on October 5, 1984.

Ride also served as president of SPACE.com from 1999 to 2000.

The two spacecrafts landed in North Kazakhstan. Both landed two degrees of latitude north of their aim point, which could have occurred by duplicated landing commands sent.

Many other errors occurred during the landing as well, such as the big crowds that were gathered and the actions of the VVS (the Soviet Air Forces) recovery forces.

The 117th flight of the XS-1 airplane was successful.

The XS-1, later called the Bell X-1, was a manned, rocket engine-powered airplane able to surpass the speed of sound in level flight.

The 117th flight, piloted by Robert Champine, was known for its stability and control. It was able to spanwise pressure distribution and effectively perform pull-ups and rolls.

There were 157 flights in total for the XS-1. These provided further data for future US fighter designs as well as spacecraft designs.

Cassini is an unmanned space probe designed to fly by various planets on its way to visit and enter Saturn’s orbit.

On its way to Saturn, Cassini performed two gravitational-assist flybys of Venus. Because of these flybys, it was able to gain enough momentum to travel out to the asteroid belt. But the Sun’s gravity pulled Cassini back into the inner Solar System.

After flying by Venus, it travelled by Earth, Earth’s Moon, and Jupiter before approaching Saturn.

Cassini is still orbiting Saturn to this day.

Charle's scientific study of impact structures began only about 50 years ago. Like any kid, he spent hours looking at the craters on the Moon through his old telescope. Would he ever get a chance to explore a crater? Well since retirement, he has combined his hobbies of astronomy, geology and flying to explore impact craters and structures in North America from the air and ground.

While studying the physics of impact sites, Charles has found that circular geological features can be produced by a number of geological processes, including igneous activity (diatremes, maars, calderas, volcanoes, or syenite/plutons), dissolution and collapse of salt or carbonate rocks by groundwater (dolines), salt or shale diapirism, regional tectonism (circular fold-interference patterns or stratified circular features), glaciation (kettle holes), carbonate mounds, and by meteorite impacts.

His science background plus the experience gleaned from his past profession of semiconductor failure analysis has given him the incentive to document his analysis of these craters and structures.

Nighttime Rocket Launch Creates Colorful Clouds In Space

The early morning skies along the mid-Atlantic coast were lit up by luminescent clouds as NASA tested a new system to support science studies of the ionosphere and aurora, with a sounding rocket launch June 24 from the Wallops Flight Facility on the eastern shore of Virginia. During the flight of a two-stage Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket, 10 canisters about the size of a soft drink can were deployed in the air, 6 to 12 miles away from the 670-pound main payload. The deployed canisters formed blue-green and red artificial clouds, or vapor tracers which allow scientists on the ground to visually track particle motions in space. The development of the multi-canister ampoule ejection system is also designed to allow scientists to gather information over a much larger area than previously allowed when deploying the tracers just from the main payload. The vapor tracers were expected to be visible from New York to North Carolina and westward to Charlottesville, Virginia – with the total flight time for the mission expected to be about 8 minutes.
