Western Europe Will Experience A Spectacular Partial Solar Eclipse on August 21st

The western portion of Europe will see a minor partial eclipse of the Sun on August 21st at, or near, sunset. Some cities will see the beginning of a partial eclipse, but the Sun will set before reaching maximum phase. Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris will see only 2.3% of the Sun obscured at sunset.

Some other cities will see maximum phase before sunset. London, for example, will see the Moon obscure the Sun by four percent at sunset. Maximum eclipse will occur at 7:05 pm with the Sun setting at 7:07 pm. Four percent is small but still observable with proper filtered glasses.

Dublin, Aberdeen, and Reykjavik will all see a complete partial eclipse of the Sun from beginning to end. Aberdeen will only see 1.6% obscuration, while Reykjavik will see only 2.2%, and Dublin viewing 3.8%.

Space Station Cosmonauts Take A Walk in Space

Outside the International Space Station, Expedition 52 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy conducted a spacewalk Aug. 17 to assess the condition of the exterior of the Russian segment of the complex and to install struts and handrails to facilitate future excursions. During the outing, Ryazanskiy manually deployed five small nanosatellites to collect data on a variety of scientific investigations. The poll surveyed 1,000 or more people in each country and had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
American men (65 percent) were significantly more likely than women (46 percent) to believe in extraterrestrial intelligent life.
People in the South and West (both at 57 percent) were more likely to assert aliens’ existence than those skeptical Northeasterners (47 percent).
The surveyors asked Americans who said smart aliens don’t exist to explain why. Nearly two-thirds responded that it’s because “humans were created by a God or another higher being,” and 31 percent chose the response that “the Earth is unique—it is the only place capable of sustaining intelligent life.”
So if there are smart aliens, why haven’t they contacted us? Forty-two percent of Americans said it’s because “human technology is not advanced enough for us to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligent life.”
People are a little less sure about the wisdom of trying to contact aliens. Only 43 percent of Americans support a program that “aims to send a digital message describing life on earth to other intelligent civilizations in space,” while 31 percent say the message shouldn’t be sent.

The oldest people are the least likely to believe in all three countries – in Britain, for example, 45% of over-60s believe in aliens compared to 59% of 18-24s.
The Fermi paradox or Fermi's paradox, named after physicist Enrico Fermi, is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence and high probability estimates, e.g., those given by the Drake equation, for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations.
According to this line of reasoning, the Earth should have already been visited by extraterrestrial aliens. In an informal conversation, Fermi noted no convincing evidence of this, leading him to ask, "Where is everybody?" There have been many attempts to explain the Fermi paradox, primarily either suggesting that intelligent extraterrestrial life is extremely rare or proposing reasons that such civilizations have not contacted or visited Earth.

There is a huge prominence on the sun's eastern limb.
If you are in the total eclipse path set your clock to greet this awesome spectacle on Monday.

In addition, a remarkably-long sunspot group is sprawling across the solar disk. AR2671 stretches 140,000 miles from end to end, almost twice as wide as the planet Jupiter. Amateur astronomers watching the eclipse through safe solar telescopes will have no trouble seeing the rugged edge of the Moon cut across this impressive sunspot, eclipsing one dark core after another. If we're really lucky, the sunspot will explode. AR2671 has a 'beta-gamma' magnetic field that harbors energy for M-class solar flares.

Tomorrow (Aug. 21), a total solar eclipse will cross the United States from Oregon to South Carolina.

Total Solar Eclipse 2017: Everything You Need To know

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk.

Who Can See It?
Lots of people! Everyone in the contiguous United States, in fact, everyone in North America plus parts of South America, Africa, and Europe will see at least a partial solar eclipse, while the thin path of totality will pass through portions of 14 states.

What is It?
This celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.

Where Can You See It?
You can see a partial eclipse, where the moon covers only a part of the sun, anywhere in North America (see “Who can see it?”). To see a total eclipse, where the moon fully covers the sun for a short few minutes, you must be in the path of totality. The path of totality is a relatively thin ribbon, around 70 miles wide, that will cross the U.S. from West to East. The first point of contact will be at Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 9:05 a.m. PDT. Totality begins there at 10:16 a.m. PDT. Over the next hour and a half, it will cross through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The total eclipse will end near Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48 p.m. EDT. From there the lunar shadow leaves the United States at 4:09 EDT. Its longest duration will be near Carbondale, Illinois, where the sun will be completely covered for two minutes and 40 seconds.

How Can You See It?
You never want to look directly at the sun without appropriate protection except during totality. That could severely hurt your eyes. However, there are many ways to safely view an eclipse of the sun including direct viewing – which requires some type of filtering device and indirect viewing where you project an image of the sun onto a screen. Both methods should produce clear images of the partial phase of an eclipse.

Following the publication of his 2008 book, UFOs and Nukes, Robert Hastings has been approached by dozens of military veterans who were involved in UFO incidents at nuclear weapons sites. In the first half, he joined George Knapp to discuss these testimonies. UFOs have clearly made a point of monitoring and in some cases even tampering with nuclear weapons around the world, he noted. In many instances, he added, with the crafts' flashing lights or zig zag movements, it's like they want to be noticed or have attention called to what they're doing.

In a 1977 case, Mario Woods, a missile security policeman at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota may have been abducted by aliens in tandem with a sighting he had at the launch control facility, Hastings reported. He initially flashed security lights at an unknown aerial craft that seemed to be moving closer. There were suddenly alarms on one of the missiles, as the strange light was directly above the missile site. Woods described the object as spherical, silent, and a swirling orange in color. He and his partner went to investigate in a truck, experienced suffocation, and fell into a daze, and then Woods began to hear voices in his head, repeatedly saying "do not fear." He believes he saw little beings coming toward them. The two were recovered after four hours by other base members, but had no recall of what happened during their missing time, Hastings recounted. In the latter half, author and ethnographer Tony Kail detailed the fascinating history of the Southern folk magic known as Hoodoo, which blends together various traditions, and developed across juke joints and Spirit churches across the deep South. Hoodoo, he explained, is a system of magic that typically focuses on matters relating to luck, love, protection, and in some cases revenge, whereas Voodoo is a religious tradition with a specific practice. Hoodoo, also called "rootworking' or "conjure" has been practiced for hundreds of years, and was brought to the US by African slaves who worked in southern plantations.

Hoodoo has been adapted to include different influences depending on the geographical region, Kail pointed out. Generally though, it follows the "doctrine of signatures," which suggests that roots and herbs which resemble different body parts can be used to treat those specific parts. Such items might be placed in a "mojo bag" to enable magic or spells, Kail continued. He has focused in particular on the Hoodoo culture of Memphis, and specifically Beale St., which was an influential nexus for African Americans, blues music, early rock 'n' roll, and Hoodoo.

Two large sunspots at the Sun. Sprawling sunspot AR2671 has a 'beta-gamma' magnetic field that harbors energy for M-class solar flares. New sunspot AR2672 is crackling with C-class solar flares.

The largest event of the period was a C5/Sf flare at 21/0316 UTC from Region 2672 (N07E61, Dao/beta). The other sunspot group, Region 2671 (N11W18, Fkc/beta-gamma), produced a few B-class flares, the largest of which was a B9/Sf at 21/1103 UTC.
Despite the beta-gamma magnetic signature, this region has been
relatively stable and inactive. However this sunspot has the power to shoot out a burst toward our planet.

There were no Earth-directed CMEs observed in available satellite imagery during the reporting period.

Solar Eclipse: Through The "Eyes" Of NASA

"Grand Finale" - Cassini Performs Epic Final Plunge Into Saturn's Upper Atmosphere

NASA’s Cassini mission will come to a spectacular close on September 15, 2017 at 5:07 a.m. PDT after almost two decades in space since its launch in 1997. The spacecraft has been orbiting Saturn and studying that system for 13 years. It’s now checking off items from a daring bucket list as it makes the most of its final months.

Since its arrival at Saturn in 2004, Cassini’s stunning observations of Saturn, its rings and moons, and the surrounding space have produced a series of extraordinary discoveries. Cassini confirmed the presence of huge lakes on the moon Titan’s surface containing liquid methane and ethane. This makes Titan the only body in the solar system, other than Earth, that has bodies of standing liquid on the surface. Cassini also caught the moon Enceladus spewing plumes of water vapor, icy particles, and organic compounds through fissures in its frozen outer shell known as Tiger Stripes. In addition, the mission showed that Saturn’s rings are an active and dynamic system that can serve as a ‘laboratory’ for scientists to study how planets form.

The spacecraft has finished a series of 20 pole-crossing orbits between the gas giant’s outer F and G rings, making new discoveries about the rings and the moons that orbit in the outer rings. Cassini is now in the process of executing 22 daring ‘Grand Finale’ dives that are bringing it closer to Saturn than any spacecraft has gone before—in the 1,200-mile gap between Saturn and its innermost ring. Initial orbits have already produced a surprising discovery—that it’s relatively empty between the planet and its rings.

The images and data gathered during these maneuvers will add to the knowledge Cassini has already provided about how giant planets – and planet families throughout our universe -- form and evolve. Researchers will be able to map Saturn’s gravity and magnetic fields near the planet in detail, revealing new clues about the planet’s internal structure. They believe that it’s not as simple as a core of ice and rock with a huge envelope of hydrogen/helium on top. These final data will also greatly enhance what Cassini has already shown us about the age and origin of Saturn’s rings and how much dust and ice they consist of.

The conclusion of the “Grand Finale” comes when Cassini performs an epic final plunge into the gas giant’s upper atmosphere. The spacecraft will transform into a fiery streak in Saturn’s skies, removing the chance of a contaminating collision with any of Saturn’s icy moons – and bringing a long, rich mission to a dramatic close.

Why Is The Entire Solar System Undergoing Massive Changes?

The solar system is travelling through much stormier skies than we thought, and might even be about to pop out of the huge gas cloud we have been gliding through for at least 45,000 years. That’s the implication of a multi-decade survey of the interstellar wind buffeting the solar system, which has revealed an unexpected change in the wind’s direction.

Our solar system is moving into a potentially dangerous and destabilizing interstellar energy cloud.

The edge of the solar system is roughly defined by the heliosphere, a giant magnetic bubble blown by charged particles streaming from the sun. This bubble shields Earth from much of the interstellar wind, so a change in the wind’s direction will have little effect here on the ground.

But the change does tell us something surprising about our galactic surroundings. The cloud is so large and diffuse, it was previously assumed to be relatively calm, and that the wind would blow in the same direction for millions of years.

The fact that the wind is shifting over the span of mere decades means that the interior of the cloud is either unusually turbulent, or that the solar system is a mere 1000 or so years away from punching its way out.

“While there had been hints that something was changing in the environment of the sun, when we finally put all the historical data together it became clear that one can make a strong scientific statement that this change has actually occurred,” says Frisch. What the change means is still up for debate. We could be nearing the cloud’s edge, or we could still be in the thick of it, pushing our way through an interstellar storm.

What is the atmosphere of the hot-Jupiter Exoplanet Wasp-121b like?

We know that for planets close to their parent stars, the temperature is very high and can heat and even dissipate atmospheres. For example, if the planetary atmosphere is retained and the starlight is able to penetrate deep into it, the gas is heated and radiated back into space as infrared light.

A different scenario can occur if there are cooler molecules at the top of the atmosphere- for example water vapor. In that case, the water vapor can prevent some radiation from getting back out and the water vapor starts to glow. A similar thing happens in the upper atmosphere of the Earth, but the molecule causing the heating is ozone. The layer which is hotter than the atmosphere below is called a stratosphere.

On Wasp-121b, evidenced through Hubble observations, there seems to be such a layer, and with a temperature rising about 560 degrees Celsius. Usually an atmosphere would be cooler with higher altitude. The exact molecules causing this on Wasp-121b are a bit of a mystery, but this object represents a particular class of "Hot Jupiters".

The Pleiades star cluster is a beautiful and familiar sight, as seen in this image from the second Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. NASA’s Kepler space telescope was designed to look at faint stars, so images taken of the Pleiades show long spikes due to the camera becoming saturated by the brightest stars. Despite the image degradation, the continuous observations by Kepler over a period of almost three months have allowed astronomers to find fluctuations in the brightness of each star.

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) has been putting its Dream Chaser engineering test vehicle through a series of ground tests at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., in preparation for upcoming captive-carry and free-flight tests later this year.
During this 60-mph tow test vehicle, a pickup truck pulled the Dream Chaser test vehicle on Edward’s runway to validate the performance of the spacecraft's nose skid, brakes, tires and other systems. The company has performed the tests at 10 mph, 20 mph, and 40 mph tests over the last few months to lead up to the 60-mph runway test. Range and taxi tow tests are standard for winged vehicles that touchdown on a runway to prove the overall spacecraft handling post-landing.

The star initially circled is Gliese 710; its trajectory is then indicated with the extending line. Gliese 710 will have a close encounter with our Sun in about 1.3 million years, coming within the Oort Cloud reservoir of comets that resides in the outskirts of our Solar System. The star is predicted to pass within about 2.3 trillion kilometres, the equivalent of about 16 000 Earth–Sun distances.

The motion can be likened to what an observer standing beside a road would see looking at an approaching car, and then swinging around to continue to follow it as it moves away. As a result, the objects in the background – in this case distant stars – become blurred as you move quickly to maintain a visual on the passing object.

The focus of this animation is the star known as Gliese 710. It will have a close encounter with our Sun in 1.3 million years, passing within the Oort Cloud reservoir of comets in the outskirts of our Solar System. The star is predicted to pass within about 2.3 trillion kilometres, the equivalent of about 16 000 Earth–Sun distances. The star’s motion is set against a background of other moving stars and the visualisation covers, very quickly, the timeframe from about 1.1–1.5 million years in the future.

The size of the field of view is 10 x 5º (for comparison: the Moon spans 0.5º on the sky) and the colours represent the astronomical colours of the stars as derived from the Gaia data. Gliese 710 is an orange K-type dwarf star, an ordinary star similar to the Sun but less hot and less massive.

BepiColombo Prepares For Mercury

ESA’s first mission to Mercury, BepiColombo, is now set for final thermal tests before launching to the hottest planet in our Solar System in October 2018. Europe said farewell to the spacecraft in July when it was at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, in its launch configuration.

BepiColombo is a joint mission to Mercury between the ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and consists of two science orbiters: ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter and JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter.

Interested in “facts that don’t fit” from an early age, in 1991, Greg Bishop co-founded a magazine called The Excluded Middle, which was a journal of UFOs, conspiracy research, psychedelia and new science. It ceased publication in 1999. "Wake Up Down There!," which anthologized many of the articles and features, was published in 2000 by Adventures Unlimited.

Greg’s second book was "Project Beta: The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth" (2005 Simon & Schuster/ Pocket Books) which documented a government campaign of disinformation perpetrated against an unsuspecting U.S. citizen. "Weird California," a portrait of strange and eerie history and places in the Golden State, was released by Sterling Publishers and Barnes & Noble in 2006. Greg contributed about 75% of the material and photos.

From December 2007 to November 2011, Greg blogged for the UFO and paranormal site Ufomystic. His current book "It Defies Language" is composed for the most part of entries from that blog along with older material and brand-new articles written just for the collection.
