Star Will Have ‘Close Encounter’ With Sun in 1 Million + Years

ESA’s Gaia satellite has tracked the the motion of the star Gliese 710. The trajectory that was calculated from the motion has the star coming within 16,000 Earth-Sun distances in about 1.3 million years. As a result, Oort Cloud-residing comets could get a push into a new orbit by Gliese 710's gravity, eventually sending some of them into the inner solar system.

What is “dark matter”? This is a question that has preoccupied astrophysicists for many decades. Observations show that 80% of the matter in our universe is in this mysterious, invisible form. In this talk, Dr. Hezaveh discusses how ALMA, the world’s most sophisticated radio telescope, is used to observe some of the most distant galaxies of our universe to learn new things about dark matter. On their 12 billion light year journey to us, light rays from these galaxies pass near other galaxies. As this happens, the dark matter halos of the intervening galaxies, large and small, bend their trajectories, causing the images here on the Earth to look distorted, like images in a funhouse mirror.

Yashar Hezaveh is a Hubble Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. His research is primarily centered on strong gravitational lensing of high redshift, dusty galaxies, with a special focus on mapping the detailed distribution of dark matter on small scales in lensing halos. Understanding the small scale distribution of dark matter can give us invaluable clues to the nature of dark matter. Prior to coming to Stanford, he completed his PhD at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and his honours in physics and astronomy at University of Victoria (Victoria, Canada).

Radar Reveals Two "Moons" Orbiting Asteroid Florence

Radar images of asteroid 3122 Florence obtained at the 70-meter antenna at NASA’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex between August 29 and September 1 have revealed that the asteroid has two small moons, and also confirmed that main asteroid Florence is about 4.5 km (2.8 miles) in size. Florence is only the third triple asteroid known in the near-Earth population out of more than 16,400 that have been discovered to date. All three near-Earth asteroid triples have been discovered with radar observations and Florence is the first seen since two moons were discovered around asteroid 1994 CC in June 2009.

Trapped by Earth's magnetic field into two giant belts around the planet, high-energy particles in the region can batter the spacecraft and even interfere with onboard electronics. Cassini-Huygens was launched on 15 October 1997 from Cape Canaveral, Florida.After nearly 13 years in orbit around Saturn, the international Cassini-Huygens mission is going through its final chapter: NASA's Cassini spacecraft is performing a series of daring dives between the planet and its rings, leading to a dramatic final plunge into Saturn's atmosphere on 15 September.

On 14 January 2005, ESA's Huygens probe, which hitched a ride to the Saturn system attached to Cassini during the seven-year voyage, entered the history books by descending to the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. This was humanity's first successful attempt to land a probe on another world in the outer Solar System.

Huygens made a 21-day solo cruise toward the haze-shrouded moon. Plunging into Titan's atmosphere, the probe touched down safely on Titan's frozen surface.

Huygens provided a stream of data representing a unique treasure trove of in situ measurements from the planet-sized satellite which scientists are still mining today. This video recalls Huygens 'one of a kind' journey.

Solar Storm Warning : Sun Shoots Strong M-Flare Outburst @ Earth

Updated video courtesy of LASCO C2 and C3 is showing a fast moving, asymmetrical halo coronal mass ejection (CME) generated by the M5.5 event around region 2673. Judging by the video, a portion of the plasma cloud appears to be headed towards Earth. An updated CME tracking model shows an impact to our geomagnetic field possible by late September 6th. Geomagnetic storming will be likely should such an impact take place.

Where Is The Edge Of Our Solar System?

Where does the solar system end? It all depends on the criteria you are using. Based on where the planets end, you could say it's Neptune and the Kuiper Belt. If you measure by edge of the sun's magnetic fields, the end is the heliosphere. If you judge by the stopping point of sun's gravitational influence, the solar system would end at the Oort Cloud.

'Black Widow' Pulsar Animation

Evening Planets
Early in the month, Jupiter appears low in the west right after sunset. Try to catch a quick view of Jupiter through a telescope before it dips below the horizon.

After the sky darkens, turn your attention to Saturn in the southwestern sky.
A telescope will provide a wonderful look at the planet’s signature feature, its rings.

Morning Planets
Venus shines brilliantly in the eastern sky before sunrise. By mid-month, Mercury and Mars appear between Venus and the horizon, but they could be difficult to spot in the
morning twilight.

Mercury disappears from view in late September, but Mars remains in the sky and moves closer to Venus as the month progresses.

Constellations and Deep-Sky Objects
Aquarius is one of the oldest constellations, recognized even by early civilizations. In ancient mythologies, Aquarius is the god of the waters. Look for the Water Jar, a group of stars shaped like a Y. A rich, compact cluster of stars can be seen in Aquarius. Known as M2, it contains about 150,000 stars located about 37,500 light-years away. Binoculars present it well, but a small telescope reveals much more detail in the cluster’s compact center.

Nearby lies the great constellation Capricornus. Known in mythology as the Water Goat, it represents a creature that fed and watered the infant Zeus, ruler of the Greek gods. Algedi is the brightest star in Capricornus. It’s visible in binoculars as an elongated star. This odd shape is due to a visual trick. From our distant vantage point, two unrelated stars appear to be close together.

Capricornus also hosts a dense cluster of stars, M30. A small telescope easily resolves individual stars in the cluster.

Luminous Blue Variables signal a spectacular transition
phase near the end of massive stellar evolution and have
attracted attention since the beginnings of astronomical
observations, yet their progenitors and immediate fates
remain unclear. Their impressive, recurrent outburst
episodes, which produce major spectral and visual luminosity
variations, as well as the less frequent giant eruptions
that create circumstellar nebulae, have often been described
for examples in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, but a
definitive identification of the physical mechanisms
underlying these phenomena remains elusive. Even the
phenomenology is incompletely known, with new behaviors
recently being discovered, some of which will be shown here.
One difficulty is that the timescales of these events often
exceed the careers, or at least the attention spans, of
individual investigators. For instance, the end of a
three-decade outburst of R127 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
was announced in 2008, only to have it resume before the
paper appeared and continue to this day!

Another challenge is that the outbursts are sudden and
unpredictable. Thus, continuous, at least monthly monitoring
is essential in order not to miss something important. At
visual maximum, these objects become the brightest stars in
the LMC, exceeding 9th magnitude in the most extreme cases.
The total energy output changes little or not at all during
their outbursts, but the high-energy ultraviolet flux is
reprocessed progressively to longer wavelengths as the
temperature of the expanding atmosphere decreases and the
apparent spectral type becomes cooler. The outbursts
subsequently invert and then recur. Until recently, it was
assumed that the LBV phase would be followed by a Wolf–Rayet
stage with extreme, continuous ejection of material, but
recent evidence suggests that some LBVs may proceed directly
to final supernova explosions. Improved physical
understanding of the LBV phenomena is essential for a
complete view of the end states of massive stars.

X-Class : A Guide To Solar Flares

Flares happen when the powerful magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnect. They're usually associated with active regions, often seen as sun spots, where the magnetic fields are strongest. Flares are classified according to their strength. The smallest ones are B-class, followed by C, M and X, the largest. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. So an X is 10 times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class, there is a finer scale from 1 to 9. C-class flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go higher than 9. The most powerful flare on record was in 2003, during the last solar maximum. It was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. They cut-out at X28. A powerful X-class flare like that can create long lasting radiation storms, which can harm satellites and even give airline passengers, flying near the poles, small radiation doses. X flares also have the potential to create global transmission problems and world-wide blackouts.

As astronomers discover more planets outside the Solar System, they are examining what conditions can foster or stifle the habitability of planets. A new study suggests that X-rays emitted by a planet's host star may provide critical clues to just how hospitable a star system could be.

A team of researchers used data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton to look at the X-ray brightness of 24 stars with masses similar to the Sun that were at least a billion years old.

Since stellar X-rays mirror magnetic activity, X-ray observations can tell astronomers about the high-energy environment around the star. In the new study the X-ray data from Chandra and XMM-Newton revealed that stars like the Sun and their less massive cousins calm down surprisingly quickly after a turbulent youth.

This is good news for the future habitability of planets orbiting Sun-like stars, because the amount of harmful X-rays and ultraviolet radiation from stellar flares striking planets in orbit around them would be less than scientists used to think.

Astronomers will continue to look at many factors that they think play into the habitability of planets around the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered. Studies like these show that X-rays can play a critical role in the ultimate question of where life might exist elsewhere in the Universe.

Chris Impey is a University Distinguished Professor and deputy head of the astronomy department at the University of Arizona, in charge of academic programs. His research is on observational cosmology, gravitational lensing and the evolution and structure of galaxies. He has more than 170 refereed publications and 60 conference proceedings, and his work has been supported by $20 million in grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation. As a professor, he has won 11 teaching awards and has been heavily involved in the curriculum and instructional technology development. Impey is a past vice president of the American Astronomical Society. He has also been an NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar, a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar and the Carnegie Council on Teaching's Arizona Professor of the Year. Impey has written more than 30 popular articles on cosmology and astrobiology and authored two introductory textbooks. He has published three popular science books: "The Living Cosmos," "How It Ends" and "How It Began," and has three more in preparation, including one on his work in India with Buddhist monks from Tibet. He was co-chair of the Education and Public Outreach Study Group for the Astronomy Decadal Survey of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

A CME struck Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Sept. 6th. So far the impact has done little to stoke strong geomagnetic activity. Another CME is on the way, however, and it is more potent, having been accelerated in our direction by yesterday's powerful X9-class solar flare. NOAA forecasters say strong G3-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Sept. 8th when the inbound CME arrives

On Sept. 6th at 1202 UT, sunspot AR2673 unleashed a major X9.3-class solar flare--the strongest solar flare in more than a decade. X-rays and UV radiation from the blast ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a strong shortwave radio blackout over Europe, Africa and the Atlantic Ocean.

Coronagraph images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory confirm that the explosion also produced a coronal mass ejection (CME) with an Earth-directed component. The CME will probably reach our planet on Sept. 8th, bringing with it a chance of G2- or G3-class geomagnetic storms.

Last Enceladus Plume Observation Just Before Cassini Meets Its Fate

This movie sequence of images is from the last dedicated observation of the Enceladus plume by NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

The images were obtained over approximately 14 hours as Cassini's cameras stared at the active, icy moon. The view during the entire sequence is of the moon's night side, but Cassini's perspective Enceladus shifts during the sequence.

The movie begins with a view of the part of the surface lit by reflected light from Saturn and transitions to completely unilluminated terrain. The exposure time of the images changes about halfway through the sequence, in order to make fainter details visible. (The change also makes background stars become visible.)

The images in this movie sequence were taken on Aug. 28, 2017, using Cassini's narrow-angle camera. The images were acquired at a distance from Enceladus that changed from 684,000 to 539,000 (1.1 million to 868,000 kilometers). Image scale changes during the sequence, from 4 to 3 miles (7 to 5 kilometers) per pixel.

The Cassini mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency) and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

An X8.2 X-Ray flare (R3-Strong radio blackout) occurred on 10 September at 1606 UTC (1206 ET). The source region was Region 2673, now located just around the visible disk. This R3 event produced a rapid increase in relativistic proton levels which are currently above the S2 (Moderate) threshold.

This event was just observed peaking at 16:06 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msKCADt2Yro#) UTC around region 2673, now located off the west limb. A Strong (G3) level radiation storm is now in progress as particles ejected outwards following the blast stream past Earth. Another massive coronal mass ejection (CME) is visible in STEREO imagery, but will be mostly directed towards the west.

Sierra was saved from this program by a mother who was very transient, but was later tracked down by the military and by an implant was coerced into joining the military at age 19.

Later on while in the reserves Sierra had her first conscious ET experience. Later in her life she would learn that her parents consented to a human/hybrid ET experiment program.

She plunged into a deep investigation of military cover-up of ET contact and Human abductions. This caught the attention of the military, resulting in a chilling trip into NORAD and serious threats to harm her family if she continued her search. Later in life Sierra would come to find out that her father, is a high level commander in the Secret Space Program, and was present during her trip into NORAD.

The threats worked and she spent the next 10 years off the grid. In 2007 Sierra was struck with a series of strokes, caused by Desert Storm Syndrome, effectively crippling 25% of her brain, that resulted in left side paralysis and prolonged outer body experiences. While recovering, Sierra learned about her soul agreements, she met her Galactic Family, learned about her life as a Pleadian Ship Commander and then began her Galactic training. She also made an agreement to have a braided Walk-in help her in her recovery and help her complete her mission here on earth.

Following over a decade of ground-breaking discoveries, Cassini is now approaching its mission end.

With little fuel left to correct the NASA's spacecraft trajectory, it has been decided to end the mission by plunging it into Saturn’s atmosphere on 15 September 2017. In the process, Cassini will burn up, satisfying planetary protection requirements to avoid possible contamination of any moons of Saturn that could have conditions suitable for life. These include Saturn’s largest moon Titan and Enceladus, which has a liquid ocean under its icy crust.

The grand finale is not only a spectacular way to complete this extraordinary mission, but will also return a bounty of unique scientific data that was not possible to collect during the previous phases of the mission. Cassini has never ventured into the area between Saturn and its rings before, so the new set of orbits is almost like a whole new mission.

These close orbits will provide the highest resolution observations ever achieved of the inner rings and the planet's clouds. The orbits will also give the chance to examine in situ the material in the rings and plasma environment of Saturn. It will also probe the planet's magnetic field at close distances.

This video explains Cassini 's final operations, what the Cassini-Huygens mission has taught us about Saturn, the potential for life on its moons and the promise of more science to come.

Rare Stellar Encounter Will Create High-Energy Explosions In Early 2018, Astronomers On Alert

This is the longest-period binary system containing a radio pulsar. A pulsar, known as J2032. When astronomers started watching it, they had no idea how dynamic was. They still don't know what it's capable of.
This pulsar has been accelerating for the last ten years, and it's still speeding up.

When it passes through the companion star's disk, we're gonna see some serious gamma-ray emission.
The pulsar, known as J2032 is the crushed core of a massive star that exploded as a supernova.
It is a magnetized ball about 12 miles across, or about the size of Washington, weighing almost twice the sun's mass and spinning seven times a second.

The massive star tugging on the pulsar is named MT91 213. Classified as a Be star, the companion is 15 times the mass of the sun and shines 10,000 times brighter.
Be stars drive strong outflows, called stellar winds, and are embedded in large disks of gas and dust.

Astronomers are expecting high-energy explosions when pulsar J2032 swings around its massive companion star in early 2018. The pulsar will plunge through a disk of gas and dust surrounding the star, triggering cosmic fireworks.

Several features combine to make this an exceptional binary. Out of six similar systems where the massive star uses hydrogen as its central energy source, J2032's has the greatest combined mass, the longest orbital period, and, at a distance of about 5,000 light-years, is closest to Earth.

Astronomers think the supernova explosion that created the pulsar also kicked it into its eccentric orbit, nearly tearing the binary apart in the process.
A study of the system led by Lyne and including Ray and Stappers was published June 16 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

On Sept. 13, 2007, Japan launched the Kaguya spacecraft on a mission to the moon. The mission was formally known as SELENE, which is short for SELenological and ENgineering Explorer. It was Japan's second moon mission.
Kaguya launched from Tanegashima Space Center on a Japanese H-2A rocket and looped around the Earth twice before heading to the moon. It carried 14 science instruments and two microsatellites to map the moon's surface and study its gravitational field.
After a 20-day journey, it arrived in lunar orbit. The mission consisted of three spacecraft: a main orbiter, a small communications satellite, and a third small satellite to map the moon's gravitational field. After about a year of lunar observations, the mission ended with a planned crash landing on the lunar surface.

Asteroid 2012 TC4 Hurtling Towards Earth & NASA's 'Excited'

Asteroid 2012 TC4 is heading towards Earth, with NASA claiming it gives their scientists a chance to test its space threat-scanning ability. The scientists said they are “excited” by the asteroid, which could be as large as 130 feet in size.

It is expected to fly past Earth on October 12, and while NASA said it is "absolutely certain" the rock will miss the planet, they are unsure how close it will pass.

On July 27, 31, and then again on Aug. 5, the approaching asteroid 2012 TC4 was observed by Olivier Hainaut, Detlef Koschny and Marco Micheli of the European Space Agency using one of the European Southern Observatory's 8.2-meter telescopes at its Very Large Telescope Observatory. These are the first observations of the small asteroid since shortly after its discovery in 2012.

The asteroid is approaching at about 30,000 mph (14 kilometers per second), and will continue to brighten - reaching 13th magnitude at time of closest approach.

According to NASA the new calculations indicate that TC4 will fly safely past our planet on Oct. 12.

Even though scientists cannot yet predict exactly how close it will approach, they are certain it will come no closer than 4,200 miles (6,800 kilometers) from the surface of Earth. However, the space rock could also pass as far as 27,000 miles (43,500 kilometers) above the surface, or about one-eighth of the distance to the Moon.

The asteroid has been out of range of telescopes since 2012.
NASA scientists are excited about the upcoming close flyby of a small asteroid and plan to use its upcoming October close approach to Earth as an opportunity not only for science, but to test NASA’s network of observatories and scientists who work with planetary defense.

Bacteria Shapeshifts In Space To Defend Itself From Antibiotics & That's Bad News For Future Astronauts

The scientists treated the bacteria with different concentrations of the antibiotics to see what effect the drugs had. Their findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, showed there was a 13-fold increase in the E. coli cell numbers and a 73 percent decrease in cell size, compared to control bacteria on Earth. The space samples also developed a thicker cell wall and membrane, which the team believes helped the bacteria protect itself from the antibiotic.

The Return Of The Comet-Like Exoplanet

Astronomers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland and collaborators used the Hubble Space Telescope to study an exoplanet that had been observed losing its atmosphere, forming an enormous cloud of hydrogen and giving the planet the appearance of a giant comet. During earlier observations in 2015, it was not possible to observe the whole cloud, whose shape was predicted by numerical simulations. Thanks to these new observations, however, the scientists have finally been able to confirm the initial predictions. The results are unveiled in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Lee Speigel is a journalist who has spent much of his career covering UFOs. He has worked for ABCNews.com, AOL News, and, most recently, the Huffington Post. He is now working with filmmaker James Fox on a script for an upcoming UFO documentary.

In 1975, Lee produced a documentary record album, “UFOs: The Credibility Factor,” for CBS Inc. It marked the first time that military and scientific voices came together to disclose their personal UFO encounters and to call for government recognition of the phenomenon. Soon after he aided the Prime Minister of Granada in an attempt to get the United Nations to officially investigate the UFO phenomenon. During this effort he worked with UFO research pioneers Dr. J. Allen Hyenk and Jacques Vallee, and was invited to meet Steven Spielberg, who wished to aide the group in their efforts.

In this interview, we discuss the recent re-release of Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lee’s visit with Spielberg, and how Hynek and Vallee felt about the movie. Hynek served as a consultant to Spielberg on the film, and Vallee was the inspiration for one of the main characters.

Mini-Neptunes seem to be common planets. In this work we investigate the possible formation histories and predicted occurrence rates of mini-Neptunes assuming the planets form beyond the iceline. We consider pebble and planetesimal accretion accounting for envelope enrichment and two different opacity conditions. We find that the formation of mini-Neptunes is a relatively frequent output when envelope enrichment by volatiles is included, and that there is a "sweet spot" for mini-Neptune formation with a relatively low solid accretion rate of ~10^{-6} Earth masses per year. This rate is typical for low/intermediate-mass protoplanetary disks and/or disks with low metallicities. With pebble accretion, envelope enrichment and high opacity favor the formation of mini-Neptunes, with more efficient formation at large semi-major axes (~30 AU) and low disk viscosity. For planetesimal accretion, such planets can form also without enrichment, with the opacity being a key aspect in the growth history and favorable formation location. Finally, we show that the formation of Neptune-like planets remains a challenge for planet formation theories.

The orbiting lab will be a collaborative space for atomic physicists all over the world, who will work with instruments that are now miniaturized, making them easily portable.

The goal of the 14 day expedition was to reach Otorten (1234.2m), a mountain 10 kilometers north of the site of the incident. This route, at that season, was estimated as "Category III", the most difficult. All members were experienced in long ski tours and mountain expeditions. The group arrived by train at Ivdel, a city at the center of the northern province of Sverdlovsk Oblast on January 25. They then took a truck to Vizhay - the last inhabited settlement so far north. They started their march toward Otorten from Vizhay on January 27. The next day, one of the members - Yuri Yudin, was forced to go back because of illness. Diaries and cameras found around their last camp made it possible to track group's route up to the day preceding the incident.

wo months ago in March 2016, a large 675-page book entitled Sekret Machines: Chasing Shadows was released. The co-authors are Tom DeLonge and A. J. Hartley. The word “Sekret” is spelled with a “k” instead of a “c” echoing the “k” added to the word magic long ago for serious communion with other dimensions. Then there is the U. S. government’s changing the “g” in magic to a “j” for TOP SECRET MAJIC classification on UFO and E. T. -related documents. And Russians and Germans insert “k”s in words like A-m-e-r-i-K-a and politiK.

41-year-old Tom DeLonge was born and raised in San Diego, California, and became the guitarist and co-lead vocalist for the American rock band Blink-182 in the 1990s. Currently he is guitarist and lead vocalist of the rock band Angels & Airwaves. On the dust jacket of his Sekret Machines, Tom writes about UFO, E.T. and “alien gods” after collaboration with a group of ten advisers from military and intelligence agencies. The preparations of ESA’s latest Earth observation satellite Sentinel-5P, also known as Sentinel-5 Precursor, are finished, and the satellite has been shipped to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia for launch in October 2017.

Sentinel-5P will ensure continued data is gathering on Earth’s atmosphere and is the intermediary satellite to fill the gap between the past generation of atmospheric monitoring satellites and the future generation of Sentinel-4 and 5, which will be launched early in the next decade. Sentinel-5P is part of Copernicus, the world’s largest environmental monitoring programme which is operated by the European Commission.

Massive Outburst From The Double Star System V745 Sco Observed By Astronomers

For decades, astronomers have known about irregular outbursts from the double star system V745 Sco, which is located about 25,000 light years from Earth. Astronomers were caught by surprise when previous outbursts from this system were seen in 1937 and 1989. When the system erupted on February 6, 2014, however, scientists were ready to observe the event with a suite of telescopes including NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

An extraordinary amount of energy was released during the explosion, equivalent to about 10 million trillion hydrogen bombs.

V745 Sco is a binary star system that consists of a red giant star and a white dwarf locked together by gravity. These two stellar objects orbit so closely around one another that the outer layers of the red giant are pulled away by the intense gravitational force of the white dwarf. This material gradually falls onto the surface of the white dwarf.

Over time, enough material may accumulate on the white dwarf to trigger a colossal thermonuclear explosion, causing a dramatic brightening of the binary called a nova.

Astronomers observed V745 Sco with Chandra a little over two weeks after the 2014 outburst. Their key finding was it appeared that most of the material ejected by the explosion was moving towards our solar system.

To explain this, a team of scientists from the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo, the University of Palermo, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics constructed a three-dimensional (3D) computer model of the explosion, and adjusted the model until it explained the observations. In this model they included a large disk of cool gas around the equator of the binary caused by the white dwarf pulling on a wind of gas streaming away from the red giant.

Feedback from a central supermassive black hole is an essential component of galaxy evolution models. Without it, those models cannot produce realistic massive galaxies and galaxy clusters. However, the black-hole feedback mechanism remains mysterious. Somehow, accretion of matter onto the central black hole of a massive galaxy becomes precisely tuned so that it regulates radiative cooling and condensation of gas in a volume many orders of magnitude larger than the black-hole's gravitational zone of influence. I will discuss how the required coupling can arise through condensation and precipitation of cold clouds out of a galaxy's circumgalactic medium, and will show how such a feedback mechanism suspends the circumgalactic medium in a state that is marginally unstable to precipitation. The characteristics of that marginal state turn out to have much in common with observations of the multiphase circumgalactic media around massive galaxies.

The mining of resources contained in asteroids, for use as propellant, building materials or in life-support systems, has the potential to revolutionise exploration of our Solar System. To make this concept a reality, we need to increase our knowledge of the very diverse population of accessible Near Earth Asteroids (NEA). Last year, dozens of the world's leading asteroid scientists and asteroid mining entrepreneurs came together in Luxembourg to discuss key questions and identify scientific knowledge gaps. A White Paper outlining the results of that discussion, "Answers to Questions from the Asteroid Miners" will be presented at the European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC) 2017 in Riga on Tuesday 19th September by Dr JL Galache and Dr Amara Graps.

New Quasar Discovered By Astronomers

A team of astronomers led by Jacob M. Robertson of the Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee has detected a new quasi-stellar object (QSO). They found the new quasar, designated SDSS J022155.26-064916.6, as a result of an analysis of available spectroscopic data

At more than 10 billion miles away from Earth, there is no day and night. Time and space are fathomless and our Sun is a distant point of starlight—a faint reminder of the home NASA's twin Voyagers, humanity's farthest and longest-lived spacecraft, left behind 40 years ago. Voyager 1, which launched on Sept. 5, 1977, and Voyager 2, launched on Aug. 20, 1977, continue to return data that shape our view and understanding of our place in the universe.
