Planetary Researchers Find More Evidence Of Water On Early Mars

River deposits exist across the Martian surface. A large sedimentary basin named Aeolis Dorsa contains some of the planet’s most spectacular and densely packed river deposits. In a new paper (https://doi.org/10.1130/B31567.1) published in the Geological Society of America Bulletin, planetary researchers provide evidence that these deposits represent incised valleys carved and filled during falls and rises in base level, which were likely controlled by changes in water-surface elevation of a large lake or sea.

Can we find stellar civilizations by looking for their waste heat? New research suggests that it is possible, and practical.

Earth-like civilizations generate heat from the energy that they utilize. The thermal radiation from this heat can be a thermodynamic marker for civilizations. Here we model such planetary radiation on Earth-like planets and propose a strategy for detecting such an alien unintentional thermodynamic electromagnetic biomarker. Astronomical infrared (IR) civilization biomarkers may be detected within an interestingly large cosmic volume using a 70 m-class or larger telescope. In particular, the Colossus telescope with achievable coronagraphic and adaptive optics performance may reveal Earth-like civilizations from visible and IR photometry timeseries’ taken during an exoplanetary orbit period. The detection of an alien heat signature will have far-ranging implications, but even a null result, given 70 m aperture sensitivity, could also have broad social implications.

Hubble Just Discovered A Comet-Like Binary Asteroid Between Mars & Jupiter

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope helped an international team of astronomers find that an unusual object in the asteroid belt is, in fact, two asteroids orbiting each other that have comet-like features. These include a bright halo of material, called a coma, and a long tail of dust. Hubble was used to image the asteroid, designated 300163 (2006 VW139), in September 2016 just before the asteroid made its closest approach to the Sun. Hubble's crisp images revealed that it was actually not one, but two asteroids of almost the same mass and size, orbiting each other at a distance of 60 miles.

Asteroid 300163 (2006 VW139) was discovered by Spacewatch in November 2006 and then the possible cometary activity was seen in November 2011 by Pan-STARRS. Both Spacewatch and Pan-STARRS are asteroid survey projects of NASA's Near Earth Object Observations Program. After the Pan-STARRS observations it was also given a comet designation of 288P. This makes the object the first known binary asteroid that is also classified as a main-belt comet.

The fact that 2006 VW139/288P is so different from all other known binary asteroids raises some questions about how common such systems are in the asteroid belt.

Asteroid Will Fly By Earth @ 0.4 Times The Distance To The Moon on September 23rd

Asteroid 2006 SR131 will fly by Earth at a very close distance of 0.4 LD on September 23, 2017. It belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 10 and 16 meters.

For comparison, asteroid that exploded some 29.7 km (18.5 miles) above Russian city of Chelyabinsk on February 15, 2013, damaging over 3 000 buildings and injuring over 1 500 people (mostly by broken window glass), had an estimated size of approximately 20 m (65 feet). Its light was brighter than the Sun, visible up to 100 km (62 miles) away.

Chelyabinsk asteroid was undetected before its atmospheric entry, in part because its radiant was close to the Sun.

Asteroid 2006 SR131 was discovered at Mt. Lemmon Survey on September 26, 2006 and It will flyby Earth at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 8.8 km/s.

According to ESA the space rock has an arc length of 7 days (First observation 2006-09-26 - Last observation 2006-10-03) and it is unobserved for 4006 days. It's also in ESA's risk list table.

In order to truly understand their nature, it would take dozens or maybe hundreds of individual missions on the scale of Rosetta or New Horizons.

Rogue Planet Spotted? Massive Nearby Celestial Object Baffles Astronomers

Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope have identified a body that is very probably a planet wandering through space without a parent star.

This is the most exciting free-floating planet candidate so far and the closest such object to the Solar System at a distance of about 100 light-years.

An international team of astronomers has recently investigated a mysterious object designated CFBDSIR 2149-0403 in order to reveal its true nature. The object is assumed to be a young isolated planetary-mass object or a high-metallicity low-mass brown dwarf.

CFBDSIR 2149-0403 was detected in 2012 as a possible member of the AB Doradus moving group. After its discovery, it was classified by the researchers as a unique T-type isolated planetary-mass candidate. However, due to the lack of convincing evidence supporting the hypothesis that CFBDSIR 2149-0403 formed as a planet and was subsequently ejected, the scientific community does not exclude the possibility that it could be a low-mass brown dwarf.

The Habitable Exoplanet Imaging Mission (HabEx) is a concept for a mission to directly image planetary systems around Sun-like stars. HabEx will directly image Earth-like exoplanets, and characterize their atmospheric content.

NASA has begun four concept studies of major space observatories that could launch sometime in the coming couple decades. In this fourth in our series on these studies, we discuss the Habitable Exoplanet (HabEx) concept.

The discovery over the past few years that stars in the Milky Way may each be orbited by at least one planet suggests that among these numerous planetary systems may reside planets similar to Earth and perhaps even harboring life. The HabEx concept is intended to be the astronomical community’s response to an age-old question of humanity, “Are we alone in the cosmos?" Although optimized for direct imaging exoplanet science, HabEx will also enable a broad suite of unique “general astrophysics” science, not possible from ground- or space-based facilities available in the 2030s, when HabEx would launch.

Fireball Over The Netherlands | 21st September 2017 @ 19:00 UT

A bright fireball occurred over the Netherlands on 21 September 2017 at 19:00 UTC (21:00 CEST). In addition to many individual sightings, it was also recorded by an all-sky camera dedicated to recording exactly such events. The camera is part of the Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation (FRIPON) network (https://www.fripon.org), and is hosted on the roof of a building at ESA's Estec technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

Other FRIPON cameras which recorded the event were located in Lille and Brussels. The combined data will allow to the object's trajectory to be reconstructed. It is most likely that any resulting fragments - meteorites - will have fallen into the North Sea.

On September 16th, 1994, at the Ariel primary school in Zimbabwe, over 60 school children described seeing a disc-shaped craft land behind the school. Some of them reported observing two strange beings near the object. One appeared to approach the group. They said the figures were about 4 feet tall and were wearing what looked like “divers' suits.” The children were interviewed immediately thereafter by Tim Leach, BBC Bureau Chief for Zimbabwe, and later, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John Mack. After an exhaustive investigation, Dr. Mack concluded that the children were not making up the story. Filmmaker Randall Nickerson is developing a new documentary using original BBC footage of the children. In the first half, he joined George Knapp to discuss the event and the details he has uncovered.

Since that time, many more witnesses have come forward with other stories of UFO sightings in the area occurring within a day or so. Nickerson tracked down many of the original witnesses (now adults) through social media. He says they all reported that the experience was “something that never left them.” A few of the children who were standing closest to the alien-looking figure said that it telepathically communicated a message of environmental urgency about the Earth. He says the experience of working on the film has made him realize that there is much to be discovered and that “we don’t have it all figured out.”

On a lonesome road in Utah in the winter of 1959, Gerry Irwin, a young soldier returning from leave, saw the sky light up as a blazing object streaked across the highway and apparently crashed nearby. Stunned, he stopped and walked across the snow-covered desert to investigate. His life would never be the same. Author and unexplained phenomena researcher David Booher joined the program in the second half to discuss Irwin's mysterious experience, and how he later deserted his Army post in Texas and disappeared. In 2013, Booher located Irwin and began a project to get him to remember his bizarre and frightening ordeal. Irwin was originally interviewed by investigators from the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization, but it wasn’t until Booher found an original letter written by the local sheriff in the area where Irwin was found that a more accurate picture began to emerge. Irwin himself still remembers very little from the period and shows "symptoms of very serious trauma."

Within hours of being found face down in the snow, Irwin told the authorities that the object he witnessed seemed to get brighter as he approached, and as it came into full view, he lost consciousness. Irwin subsequently experienced many periods of hazy memories and strange behavior and was in and out of Army psych wards until he finally went AWOL, and as Booher reported even "lived in the woods” for a few months. Strangely, he was reinstated with a security clearance after these events, which Booher thinks may indicate some level of military involvement and possible mind control. Irwin was given truth serum by the Army and asked about the events, and under its influence said that there was "a special intelligence that he couldn’t explain” that was behind the incident and that forbade him from talking about it. Booher says that Irwin (now aged 81) still "doesn’t consider it part of his reality.”

Researcher and activist Dane Wigington has been documenting disturbing changes in the environment caused by geoengineering. This involves various weather modification techniques including chemtrails and HAARP. He joined guest host Jimmy Church to discuss why he believes extreme weather is the result of geoengineering. According to Wigington, there are mountains of evidence in the form of congressional documents and patents going back at least 70 years, which definitively prove the reality of climate engineering programs. He cited the 1947 Project Cirrus—the first attempt to modify a hurricane—as an example, and suggested the government has had the ability to steer hurricanes ever since.

"We have animations capturing the ground-based radio frequency transmitters actually interacting with the cyclones and absolutely having a very profound effect on them," Wigington continued. Satellite imagery shows the atmospheric aerosolization used to control cyclones, he added. "These cyclones are absolutely being manipulated, there is no question," he reiterated, noting patented cyclone suppressing processes have protected the U.S. coast from hurricane strike for the last decade or so. All of this weather modification comes at a terrible price in environmental damage and biological harm to humans.

The elements, such as aluminum, used in geoengineering are highly toxic and present a health hazard when breathed into the body, Wigington explained. And the climate conspiracy extends even to local weather forecasts. Wigington questioned how meteorologists could predict mostly sunny days far in advance if weather modification is not at play. He alluded to Raytheon, calling them the biggest covert geoengineering contractors in the world, and noting how they provide weather models for the National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These agencies are simply reading a script produced by a company that can control the weather, he revealed.

Wigington expects the frequency of extreme weather events to escalate and to get much worse. For him, intentional climate intervention programs are the single largest factor for recent extreme weather events. "Climate engineering must be considered the single, greatest, and most immediate threat we face... because it's interfering with Earth's life support systems from top to bottom," Wigington warned.

Where Do We Go Next? Building the Deep Space Gateway

NASA is working on developing a space station in a cis-lunar orbit that will serve as the jumping off point to exploring the Solar System; it’s known as the Deep Space Gateway.

I don’t have to tell you that the vision of human space exploration in the Solar System has kind of stalled. Half a century ago, humans set foot on the Moon, and we haven’t been back since. Instead, we’ve thoroughly explored every cubic meter of low Earth orbit, going around and around the Earth. In fact, back in 2016, the International Space Station celebrated 100,000 orbits around the Earth.

The space shuttle was the last US vehicle capable of taking humans up into orbit, and it was retired back in 2011. So things look pretty bleak for sending humans out to explore the Solar System.

Earlier this year, however, NASA announced their next great step in their human space exploration efforts: the Deep Space Gateway. And if all goes well, we’ll see humans living and working farther from Earth, and for longer periods than ever before.

After the space shuttle program was wrapped up, NASA had a bunch of challenges facing it. Perhaps the greatest of these, was what to do with the enormous workforce that built and maintained the space shuttle fleet. Thousands were laid off, and moved to other aerospace jobs and other industries, but the space agency worked to develop the next big launch system after the shuttle.

Originally there were the Ares rockets, as part of the Constellation Program, but these were canceled and replaced with the Space Launch System. We’ve done a whole episode on the SLS, but the short version is that this new rocket will be capable of lifting more cargo into orbit than any rocket ever.

The first version, known as the Block 1 will be capable of lofting 70,000 kg into low-Earth orbit, while the upcoming Block 2 will be able to carry 130,000 kg into LEO - more than the mighty Saturn V rocket.

What are you going to do with a rocket this powerful? Launch new space telescopes, robotic missions to the outer Solar System, and put humans into space, of course.

In addition to the SLS, NASA is also working on a new capsule, known as the Orion Crew Module. This Apollo-esque capsule will be capable of carrying a crew of 4 astronauts out beyond low-Earth orbit, and returning them safely back to Earth.

But if you can send astronauts out beyond low-Earth orbit, where will they go?

The Deep Space Gateway.

Hubble Observations taken in 2016 show that the comet P/2006 VW139 is a binary object! Each chunk is roughly a kilometer across, and they take between 70-140 days to orbit each other. The tail in this enhanced color sequence is from dust, and changes position due to the geometry; or viewing angle on it from Earth changed between observations. No other object quite like this has ever been seen; it orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It may be relatively young, just a few thousand years ago it was a single body that split either due to a collision or by getting its rotation rate spun up, flying it apart.

Rosetta’s Ever-Changing View Of A Comet

These 210 images reflect Rosetta’s ever-changing view of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko between July 2014 and September 2016.

The sequence begins in the month leading up to Rosetta’s arrival on 6 August, when the comet was barely a few pixels in the field of view. Suddenly, the curious shape was revealed and Rosetta raced to image its surface, coming within 10 km, to find a suitable place for Philae to land just three months later.

Philae’s landing is featured with the ‘farewell’ images taken by both spacecraft of each other shortly after separation, and by Philae as it drew closer to the surface at its first touchdown point. An image taken at the final landing site is also shown.The subsequent images, taken by Rosetta, reflect the varying distance from the comet as well as the comet’s rise and fall in activity as they orbited the Sun.

Before the comet reached its most active phase in August 2015, Rosetta was able to make some close flybys, including one in which the lighting geometry from the Sun was such that the spacecraft’s shadow could be seen on the surface.

Then, owing to the increase of dust in the local environment, Rosetta had to maintain a safer distance and carry out scientific observations from afar, but this also gave some impressive views of the comet’s global activity, including jets and outburst events.

Once the activity began to subside, Rosetta could come closer again and conduct science nearer to the nucleus, including capturing more high-resolution images of the surface, and looking out for changes after this active period.

Eventually, as the comet returned to the colder outer Solar System, so the available solar power to operate Rosetta fell. The mission concluded with Rosetta making its own dramatic descent to the surface on 30 September 2016, the final images taken reflected in the last images shown in this montage.

Enceladus (313 miles or 504 kilometers across) is back-lit in this image, as is apparent by the thin crescent. However, the Sun-Enceladus-spacecraft (or phase) angle, at 141 degrees, is too low to make the moon's famous plumes easily visible.

This view looks toward the Saturn-facing hemisphere of Enceladus. North on Enceladus is up. The above image is a composite of images taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on March 29, 2017, using filters that allow infrared, green, and ultraviolet light. The image filter centered on 930 nm (IR) was is red in this image, the image filter centered on the green is green, and the image filter centered on 338 nm (UV) is blue.

The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 110,000 miles (180,000 kilometers) from Enceladus. Image scale is 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) per pixel.

The video shows the high-energy flare as seen by Hinode's X-Ray Telescope. The emission was so bright that the initial blast caused the detector to saturate. The giant explosion sent a huge cloud of superhot plasma zooming into interplanetary space -- a phenomenon known as a coronal mass ejection. Exotic Ice Formations Found On Pluto

NASA’s New Horizons mission revolutionized our knowledge of Pluto when it flew past that distant world in July 2015. Among its many discoveries were images of strange formations (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/scientists-offer-sharper-insight-into-pluto-s-bladed-terrain) resembling giant blades of ice, whose origin had remained a mystery.

Now, scientists have turned up a fascinating explanation for this “bladed terrain”: the structures are made almost entirely of methane ice, and likely formed as a specific kind of erosion wore away their surfaces, leaving dramatic crests and sharp divides.

A large coronal hole is sparking polar geomagnetic storms on Sept. 27th, and is likely to continue on Sept. 28-29, as a stream of high-speed solar wind buffets our planet's magnetic field. Isolated periods of moderate G2-class storming could spark Northern Lights in US states as far south as e.g. New York, Michigan and Washington.

A HOLE IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: NASA's Solar Dymanics Observatory is monitoring a large, canyon-shaped hole that has opened in the sun's atmosphere. Bisecting almost the entire Earth-facing hemisphere of the sun, the hole is 200,000 km wide and stretches a million km southward from the sun's north pole.

Solar wind flowing from this CH faster than 600 km/s reached our planet on Sept. 27th, and it is going to spark at least three days of polar geomagnetic storms.

Despite the impressive scale of this hole, it is nothing unusual. Coronal holes open on a regular basis. We typically see at least one each month. Solar wind streams from coronal holes keep Earth's poles glowing with auroras even during periods of low sunspot number--like now.

Interview With Dr John Brandenburg : Evidence Of A Thermonuclear Explosion On Mars

In 2015, a newly published book by plasma physicist John Brandenburg, Ph.D., was entitled,“Death On Mars: The Discovery of A Planetary Nuclear Massacre.” Sixty-three-year-old John Brandenburg received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Plasma Physics at the University of California-Davis extension campus at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California in 1981. His Ph.D. thesis was about magnetic confinement of plasmas for controlled nuclear fusion. For his book, he analyzed United States 1976 Viking spacecraft data about the Martian atmosphere as well as two Viking images of the so-called “Face on Mars,” that stares upward from a Martian highland in the northern hemisphere called Cydonia Mensae.

Other scientists who have also studied the Face and are convinced it is not natural are Mark Carlotto, Ph.D., of The Analytical Sciences Corporation; electrical engineer Vincent DiPietro and Gregory Molenaar, computer analyst, who worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center; and cartographer Erol Torun at the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, D. C.

These scientists have argued that the Face and nearby features of a large 5-sided pyramid and other structural geometries are the remnants of intelligent inhabitants long ago, not tricks of light and shadow.

Scientists analysing the final telemetry sent by Rosetta immediately before it shut down on the surface of the comet last year have reconstructed one last image of its touchdown site.

Recent observations confirm a nova seen 600 years ago.

The diligence of experienced star gazers can stand the test of time, in this case 600 years later. Korean astrologers in Seoul almost 600 years ago observed a bright new star in the tail of the constellation Scorpius. They monitored it for 15 days, but then it faded from view. A new look by astronomers today considered the observations of the Royal Imperial Astrologers. They determined this transient star was an outburst called a nova explosion. A recently published study discusses the new data that suggests that observation from the 1930s signaled the presence of a small scale “dwarf nova” which undergoes periodic eruptions. This means that some of these objects can erupt and then fade for hundreds even thousands of years before being seen again.

A Flight Through The CANDELS Ultra Deep Survey Field

This visualization traverses the CANDELS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field to showcase the varied appearances of galaxies and their three-dimensional distribution. The sequence features a dense cluster of galaxies about 6 billion light-years away and extends to galaxies at more than twice that distance. Because the light from these galaxies has travelled for billions of years across space, the images show the galaxies as they appeared billions of years ago. In addition, the expansion of space has redshifted the light of these galaxies toward longer wavelengths (i.e., to the red end of the visible-light region and into the infrared-light region). The changes seen in galaxies during the fly-through illustrate the changes in galaxy structure and appearance over billions of years of cosmic history.

CANDELS is an acronym for the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey project. One of the largest projects ever done with the Hubble Space Telescope, CANDELS surveyed five fields to study the development of galaxies over time. The CANDELS observations of the UDS field complement ground-based observations from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope.

Astronomers and visual artists extracted over 26,000 galaxies from the Hubble UDS images and created a computer model based on the measured and estimated properties. Note that the distances used in the visualization are significantly compressed for cinematic purposes.

Small Collisions Make Big Impact On Mercury’s Thin Atmosphere

Mercury, our smallest planetary neighbor, has very little to call an atmosphere, but it does have a strange weather pattern: morning micro-meteor showers.

Recent modeling along with previously published results from NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft — short for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging, a mission that observed Mercury from 2011 to 2015 — has shed new light on how certain types of comets influence the lopsided bombardment of Mercury’s surface by tiny dust particles called micrometeoroids. This study also gave new insight into how these micrometeoroid showers can shape Mercury’s very thin atmosphere, called an exosphere.

In the center of a rich cluster of galaxies located in the direction of the constellation of Coma Berenices, lies a galaxy surrounded by a swarm of star clusters. NGC 4874 is a giant elliptical galaxy, about ten times larger than the Milky Way, at the center of the Coma Galaxy Cluster. With its strong gravitational pull, it is able to hold onto more than 30,000 globular clusters of stars, more than any other galaxy that we know of, and even has a few dwarf galaxies in its grasp.

A quick timelapse video to show you what Fraser was seeing on Wednesday night. He got an alert on his phone that there was a geomagnetic storm going on here in Canada, so he went out to a nearby beach, set up the camera to see if I could capture any activity.

As soon as the timelapse started, the sky exploded in aurora activity. Huge sheets and ribbons stretching from horizon to horizon.

Investigative reporter Linda Moulton Howe discussed the increase in extreme climates, the discovery of the largest volcanic region on Earth, and strange entity sightings at Fort Baker in the early '70s. Reeling from the recent storms of Harvey, Irma, and Maria, as well as heavy monsoons in India, "it's a less benign climate," Kevin Trenberth, atmospheric physicist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, told Linda in the first segment. "It's a climate now where we'll have more extremes and everywhere will get caught up sooner or later in these extreme events." Beneath a mile of ice in Antarctica, glacier experts using radar have discovered the largest volcanic region on Earth-- some 138 volcanoes reaching heights of nearly 13,000 feet. Robert Bingham of the University of Edinburgh spoke about the amazing discovery, suggesting that as the ice continues to melt, we could see increased volcanism, and more sea level rise. Newly found asteroid 2017 SX17 will pass very close to our planet on Oct. 2 . The space rock was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey just 24 hours before its closest approach to Earth (Sept 29). 2017 SX17 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids.
It has a condition code of 6 at the time, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain.

It's estimated size is between 6.5 and 15 m (21 - 49 feet).
2017 SX17 will make its closest approach to our planet at 1020 UTC on October 2, 2017 at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 7.31 km/s.

The Northern Hemisphere’s autumn equinox was September 22. Harvest Moon – the full moon closest to this equinox – is coming up October 5. According to folklore, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon that falls closest to the autumnal equinox, the beginning of northern autumn. In the days before light bulbs, farmers relied on moonlight to help them harvest their crops. Many crops ripen all at once in late summer and early autumn so farmers found themselves extremely busy at this time of year. They have to work after sundown. Moonlight became an essential part of farming and thus, the Harvest Moon was born. There's more to the Harvest Moon, however, than just an old-fashioned name. The Harvest full Moon is really special. Throughout the year the Moon rises, on average, about 50 minutes later each day. But near the equinox, this difference shrinks to only 30 minutes. The reason is, at the beginning of autumn the Moon's orbital path makes a narrow angle with the evening horizon. To a non-astronomer, that might sound like celestial trivia but to sky watchers it makes a huge difference. For several nights in a row around the time of the Harvest Moon, the Moon rises at about the same time the sun sets. And you know what happens when the Moon rises at sunset? Low-hanging Moons are reddened by clouds and dust. Not only that, they are swollen to outlandish size by the Moon illusion, a well known but still mysterious trick of the eye, that makes low-hanging Moons seem much larger than they really are. When you add these effects together the Harvest Moon often looks like a great pumpkin. The experience is repeated for several nights in a row around the equinox. A great pumpkin-colored Moon rising in the east is a nice way to end the day. At sundown on Oct. 5th, go outside, face east, and enjoy the Harvest Moon.

A Spectacular Conjunction Of Venus and Mars Set For October 5th

A spectacular conjunction between Venus and Mars takes place on October 5th 2017. It's easily visible with the naked eye , just look at your eastern sky 60 minutes before sunrise to see the spectacle. The converaging planets might even look like they're going to touch but they won't. To the human eye, however, the distance between the two will appear breathtakingly small. At closest approach, Venus and Mars easily fit within the same binocular or telescopic field of view. If you have a small telescope, take a look. Because Venus is an interior planet, we sometimes see it as a crescent, like the Moon. But not this time. On October 5th, Venus will be nearly full. You'll see 91% of the cloudy disk of Venus illuminated by the Sun. On October 2 brilliant Venus rises around 5 a.m. local daylight time, shortly before morning twilight starts to paint the sky. The inner planet shines at magnitude –3.9 — far brighter than any other point of light in the night sky — and remains prominent even as twilight brightens the sky. About 15 minutes after Venus pokes above the eastern horizon this morning, Mars rises directly below it. The Red Planet shines at magnitude 1.8 — less than 1 percent as bright as its neighbor — though it still stands out nicely against the twilight glow. The two planets will edge closer to each other over the next few days in the run-up to a spectacular October 5th conjunction.

Asteroid 2012 TC4 is expected to fly past Earth on October 12, and while NASA and ESA said it is "absolutely certain" the rock will miss the planet, they are unsure how close it will pass. Early observations indicated that it could come as close as 4,200 miles from the Earth's surface - well within the ring of geostationary satellites - on October 12. However, new observations by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile reveal that it will miss our planet by 27,000 miles - roughly one-eighth of the distance to the Moon - which is still very close in astronomical terms. Astronomers have found five new supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. When galaxies collide and merge with each other, it can force their supermassive black holes close together. While models predict this would happen, it has been very difficult to find these giant black hole pairs until now. The combination of data from Chandra, WISE, and the Large Binocular Telescope led to this bumper crop of black holes. This discovery could lead to a better understanding of how giant black holes grow.

Interview With "Brian"

On January 2, 2015, I received the email below from a retired U. S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Flight Engineer, who asked me to only call him "Brian." His high strangeness experiences flying cargo and rescue in Antarctica were in the 1983 to 1997 time period and included several observations of aerial silver discs darting around over the Transantarctic Mountains. He and his crew also saw a big hole in the ice only about five to ten miles from the geographic South Pole (pink circle on map) that was supposed to be a No Fly Zone. But during an emergency medevac situation, they entered the No Fly Zone and saw what they were not supposed to see: an alleged entrance to a human and E. T. science research base created under the ice. Then at a camp near Marie Byrd Land, some dozen scientists disappeared for two weeks and when they re-appeared, Brian's flight crew got the assignment to pick them up. Brian says they would not talk and “their faces looked scared.” Brian and his flight crew received several orders at different times to not talk and were sternly told that they didn't see what they saw. But he was never asked to sign an official non-disclosure statement. So now that he's retired, he has decided to share what he has seen and experienced because he knows non-humans are working on this planet. Brian, now 59, graduated from an Iowa college with an associate's degree in aviation maintenance technology and an aviation certificate. In 1977, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served for twenty years until his retirement in 1997. He provided Earthfiles his DD-214 documents and other certificates of service including this Antarctic Service Medal given to him on November 20, 1984. One sunny day in December 1995, Brian and his C-130 flight crew were on a mission from McMurdo Station to the South Pole. They were flying over the Transantarctic Mountains near Beardmore Glacier when they all saw shiny discs darting rapidly and stopping repeatedly around the mountain peaks, but never going over the glacier itself.

ALERT | 2012 TC4 Will Pass Offshore Over Southern Australia / NASA: "The Chance of an Impact is Zero"

At the time of closest approach, 2012 TC4 will be at high southern declinations. The space rock will pass offshore over southern Australia.

2012 TC4 will approach closely enough that tides from Earth may change its spin, and there's a slim chance that material on its surface and perhaps even its shape could change if the interior is a rubble pile with low cohesive strength. Astronomers at Goldstone plan to check for spin changes using radar imaging before and after the closest approach.

The 2017 close approach will bend the asteroid's trajectory due to Earth's gravity, and the asteroid's heliocentric orbit will change.
The semimajor axis will increase, the eccentricity will decrease,
the inclination will increase, and the orbital period will lengthen.

2012 TC4 should be detectable at Goldstone from about Oct. 9 - 16, but not at the moment of closest approach, when it will be too far south for Goldstone to track. Scientists plan to observe this object with radar at Goldstone on several dates straddling the close approach.

A preliminary schedule is available: Oct 9, 10, 11, and 14. Additional time on Oct. 12 may be added. Radar observations at Arecibo will be possible starting on Oct. 12 at 13:22 UT.

Astronomers have reported a rotation period of 0.2 h and a large lightcurve amplitude of about 1.3 magnitudes. This indicates that
2012 TC4 is an elongated and rapidly rotating object.
2012 TC4's absolute magnitude of 26.7 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 15 meters. The spectral class is unknown.

According to NASA: The close approach has generated some buzz on the internet but the chance of an impact in 2017 is zero.

2012 TC4 was discovered by Pan-STARRS 1 on October 4, 2012. This object was tracked for about seven days during its discovery apparition but was not seen again until late July 2017, when it was recovered by O. Hainaut, D. Koschny, and M. Micheli using the 8.2 m Very Large Telescope in Chile. It will approach within 7.87 Earth radii of Earth's center (6.87 Earth radii from the surface) on Oct. 12, 2017 at 05:40:44 UT +- 16 s.

NASA Warp Drive - "Speeds" That Could Take A Starship To Alpha Centauri In Two Weeks

The first steps towards interstellar travel have been taken, but the stars are very far away. Voyager 1 is about 18 light-hours distant from Earth and is travelling with a velocity of 0.006 percent of light speed .... meaning it will take about 17,000 years to travel one light-year!!! Fortunately, the elusive "Warp Drive" now appears to be evolving past difficulties with new theoritical advances and a NASA test rig under development to measure artificially generated warping of space-time. The Warp Drive broke away from being a wholly fictional concept in 1994 when physicist Miguel Alcubierre suggested that faster-than-light (FTL) travel was possible if you remained still on a flat piece of spacetime inside a warp bubble that was made to move at superluminal velocity. Rather like a magic carpet. The main idea here is that although no material objects can travel faster than light there is no known upper speed to the ability of spacetime itself to expand and contract. The warp effect uses gravitational effects to compress the spacetime in front of a spacecraft then expand the spacetime behind it. The bit of spacetime within the warp bubble is flat so the spacecraft would float at Zero-G along the wave of compressed and expanded spacetime. The net effect is rather like surfing, where you are nearly stationary with respect to the wave, but are traveling with the speed of the wave. Whereas many of the theoretical studies consider a warp bubble moving at ten times the speed of light, there is no known limit to the potential speed. Such a warp bubble could in principle be used to enable subluminal travel (travel slower than light) as well as superluminal travel (travel faster than light) This may seem a silly choice - why travel slow rather than fast? However, it is likely to turn out far easier to achieve a subluminal warp drive for a number of fundamental reasons. Besides, space travel at 90 percent of the speed of light is far superior to anything we currently have on the books. This sounds too easy, and in many ways it is. Thus far all the superluminal warp drives require negative energy and pressure to form and maintain the warp bubble. Michio Kaku dubbed Alcubierre's notion a "passport to the universe." It takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations. Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration. Scientists speculate that such a drive could result in "speeds" that could take a spacecraft to Aplha Centauri in a mere two weeks even though the system is 4.3 light-years away!!!
