In the second half, With a B.A. in history from Purdue University, Fritz Zimmerman has spent over 15 years pouring over 10,000 historical documents and newspaper archives at one of the country's largest genealogical libraries, and has spent 13 years of archaeological fieldwork exploring over 200 mound and earthworks in the Ohio Valley. He shared the results of his research, including evidence for ancient giants in America.
Giants came to America from two different places, he reported. One group, the Maritime Archaic from Northern Europe, arrived around 5,000 BC, and had an almost Neanderthal appearance, standing between 7.5 to 9 ft. in height. The other group, he continued, were the seafaring Amorites who were engaged in metal trade, and were the builders of the many mounds in the British Isles, as well as later in the Ohio Valley.

The Amorites came to North America from around 1500 to 1000 BC, and their numbers were eventually absorbed into the Native American population, he explained. Many of the giant skeletons were discovered when the mounds were opened, and a lot of them were taken by the Smithsonian, but "once they got to the Smithsonian you never heard of them again," he noted. Zimmerman believes the evidence was suppressed because the Smithsonian backed the idea that all of the mound builders were of Native American stock. He also talked about curious paranormal activity in the Midwest, such as Mothman accounts, that seem to relate to areas near the mounds in the Ohio Valley.

Return Of The Comet: 96P Spotted By ESA & NASA Satellites

The ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA mission SOHO — short for Solar and Heliospheric Observatory — got a visit from an old friend this week when comet 96P entered its field of view on Oct. 25, 2017. The comet entered the lower right corner of SOHO’s view, and skirted up and around the right edge before leaving on Oct. 30. SOHO also spotted comet 96P in 1996, 2002, 2007 and 2012, making it the spacecraft’s most frequent cometary visitor.

At the same time, comet 96P passed through a second NASA mission’s view: STEREO — short for Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory — also watched the comet between Oct. 26-28, from the opposite side of Earth’s orbit. It is extremely rare for comets to be seen simultaneously from two different locations in space, and these are the most comprehensive parallel observations of comet 96P yet. Scientists are eager to use these combined observations to learn more about the comet’s composition, as well as its interaction with the solar wind, the constant flow of charged particles from the Sun.

Both missions gathered polarization measurements of the comet; these are measurements of sunlight in which all the light waves become oriented the same way after passing through a medium — in this case, particles in the tail of the comet. By pooling the polarization data together, scientists can extract details on the particles that the light passed through.

“Polarization is a strong function of the viewing geometry, and getting multiple measurements at the same time could potentially give useful information about the composition and size distribution of the tail particles,” said William Thompson, STEREO chief observer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Comet 96P — also known as comet Machholz, for amateur astronomer Dan Machholz’s 1986 discovery of the comet — completes an orbit around the Sun every 5.24 years. It makes its closest approach to the Sun at a toasty 11 million miles — a very close distance for a comet.

When comet 96P appeared in SOHO’s view in 2012, amateur astronomers studying the SOHO data discovered two tiny comet fragments some distance ahead of the main body, signaling the comet was actively changing. This time around they have detected a third fragment — another breadcrumb in the trail that indicates the comet is still evolving.

Scientists find comet 96P interesting because it has an unusual composition and is the parent of a large, diverse family, referring to a group of comets sharing a common orbit and originating from a much larger parent comet that over millennia, broke up into smaller fragments. Comet 96P is the parent of two separate comet groups, both of which were discovered by citizen scientists studying SOHO data, as well as a number of Earth-crossing meteor streams. By studying the comet’s ongoing evolution, scientists can learn more about the nature and origins of this complex family.

In findings reported on Tuesday, an international team of astronomers discovered an exoplanet, called NGTS-1b, revolving around M-dwarf star NGTS-1, that the team said does not fit existing notions of how stars and planets form. NGTS-1b is a gas giant, similar to Jupiter and of comparable volume and mass, but its parent star is about half the diameter and mass of the Sun, making this the most massive planet orbiting an M-dwarf ever discovered.

Ryo Ando, a graduate student of the University of Tokyo, and his colleagues observed the galaxy NGC 253 and for the first time, they resolved the locations of star formation in this galaxy down to the scale of a molecular cloud, which is a star formation site with a size of about 30 light-years. As a result, they identified eight massive, dusty clouds aligned along the center of the galaxy.

All types of electromagnetic radiation, like X-rays and optical light, are bundles of energy called photons defined by an electric vector, and an orthogonal magnetic vector. The electric vectors are mostly random in orientation, but quite often, they are aligned to a particular direction depending on the conditions in the source of these photons. For example, optical light scattered in the sky are aligned, or polarised, in the plane of the scattering and you can take a simple optical polariser to look at the sky and determine the direction of the incident photons (prior to scattering) from the source – in this case the Sun. The polarisation properties of electromagnetic radiations have been regularly used by astronomers to study the conditions of the cosmic sources emitting these radiations. For example, the direction of the magnetic field in our galaxy, Milky Way, can be precisely mapped using polarisation measurements.

Kepler-13Ab is one of the hottest known planets, with a dayside temperature of nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is located 1,730 light-years from Earth.

It has an unusual atmosphere that appears to contain titanium oxide (like sunscreen). The science team observed the Kepler 13 system and found that the atmospheric temperature of the hot planet gets colder with altitude, different from some other planets. But titanium oxide would cause the upper atmosphere to heat up. So what is going on? Likely the material is carried around to the nighttime side of the planet, away from the blistering heat, where it cools and rains down to the surface. Because the planet is so large, the titanium oxide is trapped on the surface and does not get mixed back up into the atmosphere. The Hubble observations allow astronomers to detect this precipitation process (called a "cold trap), for the first time.

The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal received on August 15, 1977, by Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope in the United States, then used to support the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The signal appeared to come from the constellation Sagittarius and bore the expected hallmarks of extraterrestrial origin. Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman discovered the anomaly a few days later while reviewing the recorded data. He was so impressed by the result that he circled the reading on the computer printout and wrote the comment Wow! on its side, leading to the event's widely used name. The entire signal sequence lasted for the full 72-second window during which Big Ear was able to observe it, but has not been detected since, despite several subsequent attempts by Ehman and others. Many hypotheses have been advanced on the origin of the emission, including natural and man-made sources, but none of them adequately explains the result. The Wow! signal remains therefore the strongest candidate for an alien radio transmission ever detected. Celestial Location The region of the sky in question lies northwest of the globular cluster M55, in the constellation Sagittarius, roughly 2.5 degrees south of the fifth-magnitude star group Chi Sagittarii, and about 3.5 degrees south of the plane of the ecliptic. The closest easily visible star is Tau Sagittarii.

We have a fair understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that regulate star formation in galaxies, from the interstellar matter to the diffuse clouds distributed in space, whose gravitational contraction leads to the birth of stars within large stellar clusters. But observations of distant galaxies have questioned this picture, the size and mass of these distant stellar nurseries largely exceeding that of their local counterparts. An international team of astrophysicists led by the Universities of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, for the observations and Zurich (UZH) for the simulations has tackled this inconsistency, which seems to question our knowledge of star formation when we study the early Universe, far away in time and space. They have found the first answers thanks to the observation of the Cosmic Snake. Their study is published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Biggest Yellow 'Hypergiant' Star Spotted

ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer has revealed the largest yellow star — and one of the ten largest stars found so far. This hypergiant has been found to measure more than 1300 times the diameter of the Sun, and to be part of a double star system, with the second component so close that it is in contact with the main star. Observations spanning over sixty years, some from amateur observers, also indicate that this rare and remarkable object is changing very rapidly and has been caught during a very brief phase of its life.

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), Olivier Chesneau (Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Nice, France) and an international team of collaborators have found that the yellow hypergiant star HR 5171 A [1] is absolutely huge — 1300 times the diameter of the Sun and much bigger than was expected [2]. This makes it the largest yellow star known. It is also in the top ten of the largest stars known — 50% larger than the famous red supergiant Betelgeuse — and about one million times brighter than the Sun.

“The new observations also showed that this star has a very close binary partner, which was a real surprise,” says Chesneau. “The two stars are so close that they touch and the whole system resembles a gigantic peanut.”

Yellow hypergiants are very rare, with only a dozen or so known in our galaxy — the best-known example being Rho Cassiopeiae. They are among the biggest and brightest stars known and are at a stage of their lives when they are unstable and changing rapidly. Due to this instability, yellow hypergiants also expel material outwards, forming a large, extended atmosphere around the star.

Despite its great distance of nearly 12 000 light-years from Earth, the object can just about be seen with the naked eye [4] by the keen-sighted. HR 5171 A has been found to be getting bigger over the last 40 years, cooling as it grows, and its evolution has now been caught in action. Only a few stars are caught in this very brief phase, where they undergo a dramatic change in temperature as they rapidly evolve.

Zwicky Transient Facility Opens Its Eyes To The Volatile Cosmos

A new robotic camera with the ability to capture hundreds of thousands of stars and galaxies in a single shot has taken its first image of the sky, an event astronomers refer to as "first light." The recently installed camera is part of a new automated sky-survey project called the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), based at Caltech's Palomar Observatory located in the mountains near San Diego. Every night, ZTF will scan a large portion of the Northern sky, discovering objects that erupt or vary in brightness, including exploding stars (also known as supernovas), stars being munched on by black holes, and asteroids and comets. "There's a lot of activity happening in our night skies," says Shrinivas (“Shri”) Kulkarni, the principal investigator of ZTF and the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at Caltech. "In fact, every second, somewhere in the universe, there's a supernova that's exploding. Of course, we can't see them all, but with ZTF we will see up to tens of thousands of explosive transients every year over the three-year lifetime of the project."

The Man Who Draws Meteors

Retired nuclear scientist, Michel Deconinck has been lucky enough to be one of the witnesses of this impressive event. Deconinck has observed meteors since 1975 and he has been a very active member of the international amateur astronomers community since then. He has been the chairman of the meteor section of the IUAA (International Union of Amateur Astronomers) for 10 years and he still works closely with the AAVSO (American Association of Variable Star Observers) as a consultant for the french speaking community.

On October, 30th, his trained keen eye allowed him to exactly remember the 4 second fireball that flew in front of him. Right after the event, Deconinck took his pencils and decided to water color the event. An avid drawer since childhood, Deconinck knew exactly where the fireball occurred in the sky and was able to place all the stars present in the scenery. In the foreground, we can see his personal observatory illuminated only by red LEDs. From his position, the fireball went from the variable star chi Cygni in the constellation Cygnus to the Vega (α Lyrae), the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.

As both the U.S. military’s dependence on space and the threats posed to space systems have grown, some in Congress and the space community have called for sweeping changes in how space forces are organized, trained, and supported within the military. Both the House and Senate versions of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2018 contain language that would significantly reorganize military space forces and authorities. This one-day symposium, hosted by the CSIS Aerospace Security Project, will explore how the military space enterprise should be organized given the increasing importance of space as a warfighting domain. Although it is a crucial pat of our cosmic timeline, Cosmic Dawn—when the first stars and galaxies formed and systematically reionized the intergalactic medium—remains relatively unexplored. By tracing the distribution and state of neutral hydrogen, 21cm cosmology promises to provide the first direct observations of Cosmic Dawn. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) is a low-frequency radio interferometer that is poised to realize this promise within the next few years by making large-scale observations of the 6 < z < 20 universe. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the scientific capabilities of HERA as well as a status update on high-z 21cm cosmology. Along the way, I will also describe our recent efforts in modeling foreground contaminants in the data, how machine learning can be used in our data analyses, and how 21cm cosmology may complement Cosmic Microwave Background observations with better constraints on reionization.

ESOcast 137 Light: Temperate Planet Orbiting Quiet Red Dwarf

A temperate planet has been discovered only 11 light-years from Earth by a team using ESO’s unique planet-hunting HARPS instrument. The new world has the designation Ross 128 b and is now the second-closest temperate planet to be detected after Proxima b. It is also the closest planet to be discovered orbiting an inactive red dwarf star, which may increase the likelihood that this planet could potentially sustain life. Ross 128 b will be a prime target for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, which will be able to search for biomarkers in the planet's atmosphere. On Nov. 15, at 4:52 local time (3:53 universal time) a very bright Leonid meteor was spotted over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Comet Temple-Tuttle that hit the atmosphere at about 260.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of around 146 km over the province of Cuenca and ended at a height of about 78 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Huelva and Sevilla.

Meteorite Over Atlantic Ocean | 16th November 2017 @ 0:06 UT

This meteor event was recorded over the Atlantic Ocean on Nov. 16 at 0:06 universal time. The event was produced by a fragment from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 54000 km/h. The fireball began at an altitude of around 90 km over the sea, and ended at a height of about 27 km. The preliminary analysis shows that this was a meteorite-producing event. The meteorite would have fallen into the sea. The event was recorded by the meteor observing stations operated by the SMART Project from Sevilla and Huelva.

A Meteoroid As Seen From The Space Station

A series of night-time photos were taken by ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli on 5 November around 22:33 GMT, here shown in a time-lapse with a 1-second interval, while the Space Station was flying from the southern Atlantic Ocean over to Kazakhstan. Paolo was lucky enough to capture a fast fireball falling to Earth over the Atlantic Ocean, off the South Africa west coast -- look closely between 00:07 and 00:08 seconds at upper right in this video. A fireball is basically a very bright meteoroid -- a small bit of natural “space rock” -- entering Earth’s atmosphere and burning brighter than the background stars. This particular meteoroid was moving much faster than typical, with an estimated speed of around 40 km/s, according to experts working on near-Earth objects (NEOs) in ESA's Space Situational Awareness Programme. "This speed is actually quite fast for meteoroids, which typically enter the atmosphere at around 20 km/s," says Rüdiger Jehn, SSA NEO segment co-manager. How Solar Flares Affect Earth

A team of scientists led by Laura Hayes –a solar physicist who splits her time between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland – investigated a connection between solar flares and Earth's atmosphere. They discovered pulses in the electrified layer of the atmosphere – called the ionosphere – mirrored X-ray oscillations during a July 24, 2016 flare.

Lava Or Not, Exoplanet 55 Cancri e Likely To Have Atmosphere

Twice as big as Earth, the super-Earth 55 Cancri e was thought to have lava flows on its surface. The planet is so close to its star, the same side of the planet always faces the star, such that the planet has permanent day and night sides. Based on a 2016 study using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists speculated that lava would flow freely in lakes on the starlit side and become hardened on the face of perpetual darkness. The lava on the dayside would reflect radiation from the star, contributing to the overall observed temperature of the planet.

On Nov. 17, at 6:11 local time (5:11 universal time) a very bright Leonid meteor was spotted over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Comet Temple-Tuttle that hit the atmosphere at about 260.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of around 139 km over the province of Cuenca and ended at a height of about 88 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Huelva and Sevilla.

The famous Leonid meteor shower is predicted to reach its peak in the predawn hours on Nov. 17-18. Weather permitting, observing conditions will be perfect: There's a new moon on Saturday, which means that the sky will be dark with no hindrance whatsoever from moonlight.

Sometimes the Leonid meteor shower arrives as a storm of meteors producing more than 1,000 "shooting stars" per hour. (During the strongest outbursts in 1799, 1833, 1866 and 1966, spectacular displays exceeded 1,000 meteors per minute!)

The Leonid meteor shower is an extremely variable event that happens every year when Earth's orbit crosses a trail of comet crumbs left behind by Comet Tempel-Tuttle.

Earth meets these meteors head-on because they are traveling through space in a direction opposite to that of our home planet. As a result, they streak through our sky at ultraswift speeds of up to 45 miles per second (72 kilometers per second). About half of them leave visible trains that, in the most extreme cases, can persist for many seconds.

Interstellar Space Probes: Where's The Brakes?

The asteroid belt is a collection of approximately 300,000 objects greater than 1km in diameter. These solar system “small bodies” sit between Mars and Jupiter at approximately 2.2-3.2 astronomical units from the Sun.

The asteroid belt is composed of a diverse array of materials including protoplanets – that is early-formed aggregations of solar system condensates, which acted as the building blocks for later planets; larger and partially differentiated planetesimals – essentially small planets, the vast majority of which have since been smashed apart and captured icy comets, collected from the outer solar system.

Genius German moon rocket designer, Wernher von Braun, had this to say about the mathematical facts required to reach the moon in his forgotten published book "Voyage to the Moon" . . . “It is commonly (and falsely) believed that men will fly directly from the Earth to the moon, but to do this we would require a vehicle of such gigantic proportions that it would prove an economic impossibility. CALCULATIONS HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY WORKED OUT on the type of vehicle we would need for the (theoretical) nonstop flight from the Earth to the moon and to return. THE FIGURES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES: THREE rockets would be necessary, EACH rocket ship would (need to) be TALLER THAN THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (1250 FEET) and weigh about TEN TIMES the tonnage of the Queen Mary (or some 800,000 TONS).” The “moon rocket" the United States Government could afford weighed just 2500 tons (a difference of 32,000 percent) and was just 363 feet tall . . . and there was just one of them, rather than the THREE required. Furthermore, Braun went on to say that a Space Station MUST be constructed BEFORE a manned mission to the moon, from which to ferry the three rockets with the necessary extra fuel, needed to reach to the moon and return. (The International Space Station was not completed until 2011.) Did I mention that this man in charge of the “moon” program’s authenticity, Wernher von Braun, was a former World War Two Nazi whom our own government’s State Department is on the record for saying that, had he not prematurely died shortly after the “moon missions", he would have been immediately thereafter indicted for War Crimes for overseeing the genocide, and the cover-up thereof, of hundreds of innocent people during the war? This threat of blackmail was obviously used to gain his obedient submission to the government deception and his “adjustment” of IRREFUTABLE mathematical calculations. BOTH rocket and fuel calculations could not be true AT THE SAME TIME, thusly Von Braun caved to political pressure from the United States government, or he was a highly incompetent mathematician, being in error of fuel calculations by a factor of 32,000 PERCENT. Sun Is Capable Of Producing A “Potentially Devastating Superflare” - Study

The Sun demonstrates the potential to superflare, new research into stellar flaring suggests.

Led by the University of Warwick, the research has found a stellar superflare on a star observed by NASA’s Kepler space telescope with wave patterns similar to those that have been observed in solar flares.

Superflares are thousands of times more powerful than those ever recorded on the Sun, and are frequently observed on some stars.

Found in the Milky Way, the binary star, KIC9655129, is known to superflare. The researchers suggest due to the similarities between the superflare on KIC9655129 and the Sun’s solar flares, the underlying physics of the flares might be the same, supporting the idea that our Sun could also produce a superflare.
Typical solar flares can have energies equivalent to a 100 million megaton bombs, but a superflare on the Sun could release energy equivalent to a 100 billion megaton bombs.

If the Sun were to superflare the Earth’s communications and energy systems could be at serious risk of failing.

Two Planets Beyond Pluto?

New calculations by astronomers in Spain and the UK suggest that not one, but two unknown planets might exist in our solar system, beyond Pluto’s orbit.

The new calculations – from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM, Spain) and the University of Cambridge (UK) – are based on the orbital behavior of known objects at our solar system’s fringes. The most accepted theory of our solar system establishes that the orbits of extreme trans-Neptunian objects should be distributed randomly. By an observational bias, their paths must fulfill a series of characteristics.

For example, according to the established theory, objects beyond Pluto must have a semi-major axis – the axis which defines a planet’s farthest point from the sun – with a value close to 150 AU (or 150 times the distance between the Earth and the sun; by contrast, Pluto’s orbit has a semi-major axis of 39 AU). Plus, according to the theory, their orbits must be inclined to the plane of the solar system by almost 0°.

Yet this isn’t what astronomers observe a dozen of known small bodies beyond Pluto. The values of the semi-major axis are between 150 AU and 525 AU. The average inclination of their orbits is around 20°.

In other words, solar system theory doesn’t match what is observed. When that happens, astronomers scratch their heads and wonder why. These astronomers believe the reason is that there are unknown large planets out on the fringes of the solar system, waiting to be discovered.

This bright North Taurid fireball was spotted over the center of Spain on 20 Nov. 2017 at 5:30 local time (4:30 universal time). It was produced by a fragment from Comet Encke that hit the atmosphere at about 110,000 km/h. The event overflew the province of Cuenca. It began at an altitude of about 104 km and ended at a height of around 54 km.

Black Disk Spotted During Flight To Gibraltar

We all know that flying has become a real pain because of all the added security, but every once in a while, some flyers get a little more than they bargained for. Our next story takes us on a flight from Great Britain to Gibraltar. The event took place back on April 4th of this year. The witness to this event, who also submitted the media, says he was taking cloud photos through the aircraft window when he captured a flying black disk in two of the four photos he shot. In the video, you can clearly see the shape of a disk as was described by the shooter. The object looks like it moved from one photo to the next, but that could be movement of the aircraft as well. The witness says he looked through the window again after taking the photos and there was nothing there. The object had disappeared. The only evidence he had are the two photos. The event left the witness feeling very surprised as I am sure it would just about anyone.
