During this period the moon will reach its first quarter phase on Sunday November 26th. At this time the half-illuminated moon will lie 90 degrees east of the sun and will set near 2300 (11pm) local standard time (LST). The moon will interfere with evening observing but will set before the more active morning hours arrive. Toward the end of this period the waxing gibbous moon will remain in the sky most of the night, obscuring all but the brighter meteors. The estimated total hourly meteor rates for evening observers this week is near 4 as seen from mid-northern latitudes (45N) and 3 as seen from tropical southern locations (25S). For morning observers the estimated total hourly rates should be near 18 as seen from mid-northern latitudes and 12 from the southern tropics. The actual rates will also depend on factors such as personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions, alertness and experience in watching meteor activity. Evening meteor rates are reduced during this period due to moonlight. Note that the hourly rates listed below are estimates as viewed from dark sky sites away from urban light sources. Observers viewing from urban areas will see less activity as only the brighter meteors will be visible from such locations.

Three-mile-wide asteroid named after ‘destroyer’ God is heading towards Earth

A mysterious three-mile-wide asteroid, ominously named Phaethon after a Greek demi-God who nearly destroyed Earth, is going to buzz our planet before Christmas.

The object, named 3200 Phaethon will fly past ‘quite close’, Russian astronomers have warned (but don’t worry, there’s no chance it will hit us).

Phaethon was a Greek demi-God who borrowed his father, the sun God Helios’s chariot, and nearly burnt the Earth to a cinder, before being killed by Zeus.

NASA classifies it as a ‘potentially hazardous asteroid’, but it will pass 6.4 million miles from Earth on December 17.

Gary A. David is an author and independent researcher who has been intrigued by the American Southwest since his initial trip there in 1987. The following year he lived for about six months in northern New Mexico, where he studied archaeological ruins and rock art. In 1994 he moved to Arizona and began an intensive study of the ancestral Pueblo People (sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Anasazi) and their descendants the Hopi.

A pair of coronal holes stretching from the northern to southern solar hemisphere are now facing our planet. A solar wind stream flowing from these zones may reach Earth beginning November 27th and lead to a geomagnetic enhancement at higher latitudes.

A new fast-growing sunspot forming in the northern hemisphere was assigned region 2689 on Saturday and will be monitored. So far it does not yet appear to be a threat for noteworthy solar flares.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is monitoring an unusual filament of magnetism on the sun. Images taken on Nov. 26th, show where magnetic forces are holding a massive curl of dense plasma just above the stellar surface.

Magnetic filaments on the sun are not uncommon. Usually they are linear, stretching in only one direction. This one, however, curls back on itself, circumscribing a region more than 280,000 km in diameter. The unusual architecture of the region may undermine its stability. Magnetic fields that criss-cross, like mismatching ends of an incomplete circle, can explode--a process called "magnetic reconnection." Any eruptions the next few days would likely be Earth-directed.

Wanted to add a key hypothesis which may help in other cases if trying to determine patterns.. The occupants that visited were super cautious based on observations. This would be a typical pattern allowing for contactees to notice subtle peculiarities without drawing attention up in the sky but using a location somewhat concealed except clearly to the ranch. In my opening scene notice how bright the light was initially... You can also see the object is much longer by the light pattern. In closing James looks like he captured an authentic near earth UFO..

How To Shoot A Quality UFO Video

Shooting a quality UFO video is an art few master, mostly because people never think about it until the moment they pull their camera out to shoot a video. After reviewing thousands of videos and photos over the past years, our editing staff at UFO Planet TV have a few pointers on how you can shoot a quality UFO video or photo.

Take the time to learn how the camera on your device operates. There are some great how-to videos online that will teach you how to properly use the features of your camera the way the manufacturer intended.

Shoot both videos and photos in landscape mode. Before you begin recording, turn your camera to landscape mode. The resolution is much better, resulting in a higher quality video or photo for later examination.

Keep camera movement to a minimum. If you shoot in landscape with higher resolution, there is very little need to move the camera around because of the much wider view. This includes zooming in and panning. Steady yourself against something solid like a car, tree or fence, turning your body into a stable tripod.

Include reference points in your video. Start the video by showing your surroundings, it help investigators judge size and distance.

Describe what you are looking at. While you shoot the video, describe what you are looking at. There are some great cameras out there but nothing as good as the naked eye. Be your own reporter and report on the event, live as it happens. Describe what you see and hear. It will make the viewer experience so much more interesting.

Like everything else we do, a little practice can go a long way. The next time you see a passenger jet flying overhead, take our your cell phone and practice shooting a moving object in the sky.

Remember to turn your cell phone to landscape mode 'before' you start recording. In fact, shoot two separate videos, one in landscape and the other in portrait, so you can see the difference for yourself.

These include stable photometry, impeccable star/galaxy separation and resilience to artefacts, not to forget the temporal sampling. In this talk, amongst other things, I will show that in terms of detection of low surface-brightness sub-structure in the halo of the Milky Way, Gaia DR1 has capabilities that are comparable to the of large sky surveys that reach 2-3 magnitudes deeper. Moreover, by using the Gaia DR1 data to recalibrate the SDSS astrometry, we have now built an unprecedented proper motion catalogue with the quality similar to that expected for the Gaia's DR2..

Antares : Unprecedented Images Of The Supergiant Star's Surface & Atmosphere

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer astronomers have constructed the most detailed image ever of a star — the red supergiant star Antares. They have also made the first map of the velocities of material in the atmosphere of a star other than the Sun, revealing unexpected turbulence in Antares’s huge extended atmosphere. The results were published in the journal Nature.

To the unaided eye the famous, bright star Antares shines with a strong red tint in the heart of the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). It is a huge and comparatively cool red supergiant star in the late stages of its life, on the way to becoming a supernova.

Using the new results the team has created the first two-dimensional velocity map of the atmosphere of a star other than the Sun. They did this using the VLTI with three of the Auxiliary Telescopes and an instrument called AMBER to make separate images of the surface of Antares over a small range of infrared wavelengths. The team then used these data to calculate the difference between the speed of the atmospheric gas at different positions on the star and the average speed over the entire star. This resulted in a map of the relative speed of the atmospheric gas across the entire disc of Antares — the first ever created for a star other than the Sun..

The astronomers found turbulent, low-density gas much further from the star than predicted, and concluded that the movement could not result from convection [3], that is, from large-scale movement of matter which transfers energy from the core to the outer atmosphere of many stars. They reason that a new, currently unknown, process may be needed to explain these movements in the extended atmospheres of red supergiants like Antares.

Back then, scientists suggested that energized, radioactive particles might zip through the booms and flashes of a thunderstorm. Those particles emit energy at precise wavelengths, which Enoto and colleagues are the first to detect.

Astronomers using the MUSE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile have conducted the deepest spectroscopic survey ever. They focused on the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, measuring distances and properties of 1600 very faint galaxies including 72 galaxies that have never been detected before, even by Hubble itself. This wealth of new information is giving astronomers insight into star formation in the early Universe, and allows them to study the motions and other properties of early galaxies — made possible by MUSE’s unique spectroscopic capabilities.

Object Over Dover, New Hampshire, USA Did Not Move Like A Normal Airplane

An object in the sky over Dover, New Hampshire left a witness bewildered this past November 18th. The incident happened when the witness was driving north on route 16. He first spotted the object around 9:52 AM. He says his viewing angle was 40 degrees. Here is how the witness described the sighting. "The object appeared as a black line with slightly curved edges. Not to read into it, but my first thought was this is the black line that could separate the top and bottom of a flying disc. Disc was not visible though. Did not move as normal aircraft, but moved very slowly, sometimes stationary. I also thought that perhaps it was one of those long balloons that clowns twist into animal shapes, but the line did not undulate with the wind, and also did not move as fast as a balloon or in one direction. Also it was visible behind clouds that appeared to be very high in the sky, which made me think it was quite large. There were two times where the line slowly transitioned to a red/orange color and then back to black as if the angle it was rotating caught the sun's reflection. I was in the car so I could not hear a sound. It should have been close enough to the Pease Airport radar to be picked up." Another interesting experience from Dover, New Hampshire.

Second Witness Captures Footage Of "Telephone Pole" UFO Over Dover, New Hampshire

We have a second video from Dover, New Hampshire showing the "pole" looking unidentified flying object that was reported by another witness yesterday. The witness from today's video was driving down the highway attempting to capture footage of a collision. He had not intended to capture video of the pole object, that was simply a bonus. This is how the event was described by the witness. "At 8:45 am heading south bound on NH Rt 16 approaching tolls in Dover. Heavy traffic south bound caused by rubber necking to see north bound crash. I was taking a video of the traffic crash when I noticed something in the sky. It looked like a telephone pole and was black. I was probably moving at 10 miles per hour and when it went past me. It was moving right along, maybe 30 miles per hour. I lost sight of it in the bright sun." The object is a lot more clear in this clip than it was in the previous clip from Dover. There is something strange going on here, more than one person witnessed the same event from different angles.

Can We Protect Astronauts From Radiation? Building An Artificial Magnetosphere

Space is our future, but space is also a deadly place, with poisonous radiation and an increased risk of cancer. We’re protected here on Earth thanks to our planet’s magnetosphere, but is there a way to create an artificial magnetosphere and shield astronauts?With over half a century of experience sending humans into space, we’ve learned quite a bit about what it does to the human body. The microgravity weakens the bones, reduces muscles and puts stress on the organs, but this can be partly compensated by exercise.

Time spent in isolation or in close quarters with other astronauts can push people to the breaking point. But this isn’t the first time we’ve learned to work in isolated and dangerous environments with other people.

Being in space, away from the support of modern society requires that astronauts have the skills, training and communication with Earth to deal with medical emergencies, hardware failures, and the inevitable hostile xenomorphs, whether it’s a stand up fight or another bug hunt.

But there’s one risk that’s going to always be there when humans travel out into the Solar System: radiation. Powerful solar storms can kill astronauts in days, but even the ongoing background radiation of the Universe is going to be increasing their risk of getting cancer, through their entire lives.

We’re protected here on Earth by our planet’s magnetosphere; the magnetic shell that surrounds our world, redirecting high-energy particles so they can’t reach the surface.

Earth is protected, and so is Jupiter. But good luck living down on the cloud tops of that gas giant. Unfortunately, the outer space places where we’d really like to live: the Moon, Mars, or rotating space stations in the Lagrange points, have no such protection.

This leads our imaginations to wonder, could we generate an artificial magnetosphere to protect astronauts and space colonists? Magnets keep photos and shopping lists stuck to my refrigerator. How hard could it be?

Selected Asteroids Detected By Gaia Between August 2014 & May 2016

While scanning the sky, ESA's Gaia mission maps not only the stellar content of our Galaxy, but also the Solar System's asteroid population (see http://sci.esa.int/gaia/58562-challen...).

This visualisation shows the detection by Gaia of more than 13 000 asteroids as the spacecraft (represented by the pale blue dot) scanned the sky between August 2014 and May 2016. This is a subset of the total number of asteroids seen by Gaia – the sample shown here is of bright asteroids that have been detected more than ten times during the period. The corresponding data for the position on the sky for each detection of every asteroid – the epoch astrometry – will be included in Gaia's Data Release 2, the second intermediate data release from the mission, expected in April 2018 (see https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/r...).

Gaia sweeps the sky with two fields of view, separated by an angle of 106.5 degrees (see http://sci.esa.int/gaia/58214-gaia-sc...). Each of these sweeps takes six hours, the time it takes for Gaia to make one rotation on its spin axis. The spin axis also undergoes a slow precession, so that the slice of sky captured by the two fields of view shifts slightly for each rotation. In this way a map of the distribution of stars and asteroids is built up.

Not all regions of the sky are accessible to Gaia at any one time. In particular, as indicated in the opening sequence, there are two large cones of exclusion (with boundaries indicated by the dashed lines) where Gaia never observes (see http://sci.esa.int/gaia/58710-asteroi...). One cone includes the direction of the Sun (represented by the large white dot), and the other is directly opposite. As Gaia orbits the Sun, these cones sweep across new regions of the sky and the previously excluded regions can be observed. Eventually the entire sky is covered.

In this visualisation, asteroids detected during a six-hour scan are marked yellow, turning blue when the next scan begins. As time progresses the impressive accumulation of detected asteroids can be clearly seen and the main asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter, emerges.

Asteroids can be detected more than once, as they may be detected during several scans. Most of the asteroids depicted here are detected ten or more times in the period covered by this visualisation. In the time between detections, a given asteroid moves through the Solar System and is detected at a different position each time.

Although none of the asteroids depicted here are newly discovered, mapping known asteroids in this way is very valuable. By doing so, the mission plays an important role in contributing to our understanding of the physical and dynamical characteristics of asteroid populations. In particular, the precise measurement of each position provided by Gaia helps astronomers to refine their models of asteroid orbits.

The time stamp in the upper left of the animation shows the progression of time; the counter shows the accumulated number of asteroids detected at that time. As time passes, the sample approaches completeness and the rate of detection decreases.

The view on the left is a projection of the asteroid positions on the ecliptic plane – the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. On the right, the view is side-on. Both views are from the perspective of an observer following Gaia along its path around the Sun and thus Gaia appears to remain in one place.

The transition at the beginning of the animation from the Gaia ecliptic pole scanning law (EPSL), which was used for the first 28 days of commissioning, to the nominal scanning law (NSL) which was used subsequently (see https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/i...), can be discerned from the emerging pattern of detections.

The space rock, dubbed 3200 Phaethon, has a diameter of about 3 miles, according to experts, making it the third-largest "potentially hazardous" asteroid to pass by Earth.

NASA expects Phaethon to be the closest to Earth on Dec. 16, when it's projected to be more than 6.4 million miles away. That's about 27 times the average distance between Earth and the moon, which is 238,855 miles.

It will be the closest this asteroid has been to Earth since Dec. 16, 1974, when it was just over 5 million miles away, astronomers say.

Del Mar, California - Our next story from Del Mar, California is fascinating. The witness said he thought the objects in his video are strange and is looking for some professional input to help determine what exactly was captured on film. The event took place on November 29th at 9 AM pacific time.

On closer inspection, I am not sure what we are looking at."

Witness Captures Video Of Beach Ball Size Orb On Night Vision

Longmeadow, Massachusetts - We have a very interesting night vision story to share. The story comes from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. A witness says that he was in his back yard when he noticed a small, beach ball sized, glowing, orange sphere, as it passed by silently at tree top level. Lucky for us, he was able to capture the event on camera.

The witness describes what happened like this.

"At 8pm on Feb 6th of 2016 I went out by myself to my backyard and set up my video camera on a tripod with a generation 3 night vision scope attached. I pointed the camera towards the southwest at a 45 degree angle and started filming. The night sky was clear, there wasn't much wind and it was about 25 degrees outside. I stayed outside for ten minutes but because of the bone chilling cold I went back indoors to warm up and I left the camera outside filming hoping to catch something unusual. I guess you could call it a kind of sky fishing."

"The orb was coming from the southwest in a straight line heading towards the northeast. It was about 50 to 60 feet in altitude and moving slowly, say 10 to 15mph as it took 90 seconds to fly by my position. It flew right over my backyard neighbors house which is set 15 feet lower than my place because of the topography of the land."

"On the video because of the bright light of the sphere, it causes a halo effect with the night vision scope so the sphere appears bigger than it really is. It was about the size of a small beach ball. The closest it came to me was approximately 100 to 150 feet. The first tree the orb fly's behind was 45 feet away and the 2nd tree was 80 to 90 feet from where I was filming which I measured the next day with a laser range finder. during the sighting I was excited, calm and thankful."

"The next morning at 9:30am while having breakfast, I noticed the faint hum of an engine and thought nothing of it. A few minutes later I noticed it again but it was a little bit louder this time so I look out the back kitchen window and I see a helicopter in the sky flying very low and slow circling the area. I grabbed my video cam and included a short video. I visually counted six laps around my house and neighborhood before it flew away."

The teams involved in ESA's Herschel space observatory reflect on the mission and its legacy. Herschel launched in May 2009 and studied the cool Universe in infrared and sub-millimetre wavelengths for nearly four years. Highlights included surveying the glow of cold cosmic dust embedded in interstellar clouds of gas to unlock the secrets of star formation, and peering back in time to when the Universe was less than one billion years old to study galaxy evolution. The observatory also traced out the presence of water in star-forming clouds, detected it for the first time in the seeds of future stars and planets, and identified the delivery of water from interplanetary debris to planets in our Solar System. Although the Herschel mission has now reached retirement, its legacy continues and it will remain a primary reference for astronomers for many years to come. The Motion Of Two Million Stars

This video shows the 2 057 050 stars from the TGAS sample, which was published as part of the first data release of ESA's Gaia mission (Gaia DR1) on 14 September 2016, with the addition of 24 320 bright stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue that are not included in Gaia's first data release. The stars are plotted in Galactic coordinates and using a rectangular projection: in this, the plane of the Milky Way stands out as the horizontal band with greater density of stars. The video starts from the positions of stars as measured by Gaia between 2014 and 2015, and shows how these positions are expected to evolve in the future, based on the proper motions from TGAS. The frames in the video are separated by 750 years, and the overall sequence covers 5 million years. The stripes visible in the early frames reflect the way Gaia scans the sky and the preliminary nature of the first data release; these artefacts are gradually washed out in the video as stars move across the sky. The shape of the Orion constellation can be spotted towards the right edge of the frame, just below the Galactic Plane, at the beginning of the video. As the sequence proceeds, the familiar shape of this constellation (and others) evolves into a new pattern. Two stellar clusters – groups of stars that were born together and consequently move together – can be seen towards the left edge of the frame: these are the alpha Persei (Per OB3) and Pleiades open clusters.

Astronomers have discovered a cosmic photobomb in the Andromeda galaxy. Scientists previously thought this source was in Andromeda, but now they know it is not. This object is actually 1,000 times farther away than Andromeda at a distance of about 2.6 billion light years. Not only is it much more distant, it may contain two giant black holes in very close orbit around one another. Scientists used data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical telescopes on the ground to identify this unexpected member in Andromeda’s images. This distant black hole pair could have formed when two galaxies, each containing a supermassive black hole, merged billions of years ago..

The term “photobomb” means for someone or something to unexpectedly appear in an image. While this is generally used for pictures of celebrities or selfies with friends, it turns out that the universe can have photobombs as well. A new result using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and ground-based optical telescopes reveals a photobomb in the nearby Andromeda galaxy. While looking for other types of objects, a team of researchers from the University of Washington noticed one particularly unusual source in this sister spiral galaxy to the Milky Way. While previous scientists had classified this object, known as J0045+41, as a pair of orbiting stars within Andromeda, the researchers decided to take a closer look. They discovered that J0045+41 was not in Andromeda at all. Instead, J0045+41 was about a thousand times farther away at a distance of some 2.6 billion light years from Earth. They also used the X-ray and optical data to uncover that this was not a pair of stars, but may instead be a duo of supermassive black holes. The researchers estimated that these black holes together contain about 200 million times the mass of the Sun, yet were separated by less than one hundredth of one light year. By comparison, the nearest star to the Sun is over four light years away. They might take cameras bigger than your smartphone’s and instruments that are in space, but the photobombs from the cosmos can be just as entertaining --and even informative.

That distance won’t be bested again until 2034. But this year’s supermoon will still appear 7% bigger and 16% brighter than the average full moon. As luck would have it, supermoons that occur during the winter months in the northern hemisphere also look larger than supermoons during other times of the year. That’s because the Earth is closer to the sun, and the sun’s gravity tugs the moon closer to the Earth.

Space itself is neither cold nor hot because space has no matter whose temperatures you can measure. Hot bodies, even human ones, would quickly radiate any heat they’ve had into the vacuum and if there’s nothing to replenish that heat or hold it inside the body, that body will keep radiating any heat until it reaches nearly absolute zero on Kelvin scale (I would suggest reading about the concept of absolute zero to understand the vacuum of space better).

On July 9th, 1985, the Space Shuttle Challenger ascended into the heavens. On board was Mission Specialist Loren Acton who took along some seeds from the 1,000 year old “El Palo Alto” giant redwood tree that inspired the logo for his hometown.

Voyager 1 Fires Up Its Thrusters After 37 Years

Voyager 1 hadn't used its four "trajectory correction maneuver" (TCM) thrusters since November 1980, during the spacecraft's last planetary flyby — an epic encounter with Saturn. But mission team members fired them up again on Nov. 28th to see whether the TCM thrusters were still ready for primetime. The little engines passed the test with flying colors, NASA officials said. The plan is now to press the TCM engines into service in the attitude-control role, beginning in January. But the four TCM thrusters will likely be retired again at some point in the future. Each one requires a heater to operate, which in turn uses power. When Voyager 1's power supply gets too low, the probe's handlers will switch back to the attitude-control thrusters, NASA officials said. (Voyager 1 is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, or RTG. RTGs convert to electricity the heat generated by the radioactive decay of plutonium-238.) Since 2014, engineers have noticed that the thrusters Voyager 1 has been using to orient the spacecraft, called "attitude control thrusters," have been degrading. This condition is now popularly referred to as Supermoon. The term itself is of no scientific value: astronomers prefer to call it perigee full Moon, but undoubtedly Supermoon is by far a much more charming name.

Both the full and the new Moon can be “super”, as long as they occur near the lunar perigee, that is, when our satellite is at its minimum distance from the Earth. The Moon moves around our planet along an elliptical orbit, so its distance from us is not constant, but varies between a minimum (perigee) and a maximum value (apogee). Of course, the new Moon is not visible in the sky, so only the full Supermoon can be observed (unless we have a solar eclipse during the new Supermoon, as in March 2016). In 2017, we had a total of four Supermoons, but the only full and visible one will be the next 3 Dec. one, ending the 2017 cycle.

“The 3 Dec. 2017 Supermoon will appear about 7% bigger and a bit brighter than an average full Moon, but casual stargazers will not recognize this at their first glance,” says Gianluca Masi, astrophysicist, scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project. “In fact,” Masi adds, “these are not really obvious variations, but they add charm to the event, a precious opportunity to admire our natural satellite in the night sky context, an increasingly overlooked and forgotten landscape.”

The show of the full Moon (and of course of the Supermoon) offers its best when our satellite rises or sets, which happens at sunset and at dawn, respectively (the full Moon shines in the sky on the opposite direction respect to the Sun, so it rises at sunset and sets at dawn). “During the twilight,” says astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, “the residual solar light scattered all around by our atmosphere allows us to admire the scenery, while the full Moon rises or falls on the horizon.”

“At night,” continues Masi, “the full Moon is very bright, almost dazzling, compared to the darkness of the landscape.” “At its rise”, adds astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, ” the Moon appears behind monuments and elements of the landscape, generating the feeling that its disk is larger than usual, but this is just an optical illusion, due to the presence of those terrestrial elements on the line of sight, giving grounds for comparison”.

Supermoon 2017: How to see the 'full cold moon', the brightest of the year It’s been a year since the visible supermoon last graced our skies, when the full moon was closest to the Earth. On Sunday (Dec. 3), the supermoon will have an encore and swing 26,500 km (approximately 16,500 miles) closer than usual. Last year, the moon was the closest its been since 1948. That distance won’t be bested again until 2034. But this year’s supermoon will still appear 7% bigger and 16% brighter than the average full moon. As luck would have it, supermoons that occur during the winter months in the northern hemisphere also look larger than supermoons during other times of the year. That’s because the Earth is closer to the sun, and the sun’s gravity tugs the moon closer to the Earth.

David’s most recent book, Earth in Human Hands, was named Best Science Book of 2016 by NPR’s Science Friday, explores how we can take on the possibly existential threat to life on Earth and consciously shape our planet’s future. David’s research focuses on climate evolution on Earth-like planets and potential conditions for life elsewhere. He is involved with several interplanetary spacecraft missions. In 2013 he was appointed as the inaugural Chair of Astrobiology at the U.S. Library of Congress where he studied the human impact on Earth systems and organized a public symposium on the Longevity of Human Civilization. His papers have been published in Nature, Science, and numerous other journals, and his popular writing has appeared in many newspapers and magazines. Canadian astronomers have not only discovered that a world orbiting a star 111 light years away could be a "super-Earth," they've also discovered a new exoplanet in the same solar system.

The newly discovered world was found when a team of researchers, lead by Ryan Cloutier, a PhD student at the University of Toronto's department of astronomy and astrophysics, was analyzing data collected from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) on the K2-18 star system which was found to have a planet — K2-18b — orbiting in 2005.

An Australian scientist has created the most detailed map ever of clouds of high-velocity gas in the universe around us.

The map covers the entire sky and shows curious clouds of neutral hydrogen gas that are moving at a different speed to the normal rotation of the Milky Way.

It was created by astronomer Dr Tobias Westmeier, from The University of Western Australia node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, and published today in the leading journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The research, presented in a paper published November 24 on arXiv.org, uncovers sub-structures and offsets in the dust distribution of the inner part of the disc.

Located some 380 light years away from the Earth, HD 169142 is a young (about six million years old) Herbig Ae/Be star approximately two times more massive than our sun. The star is known to be orbited by at least one massive gas giant planet and has a protoplanetary disc

The path of a light beam will be bent by the presence of mass, an effect explained by General Relativity, and a massive body can therefore act like a lens - a so called "gravitational lens" – to distort the image of an object seen behind it. Scientists first confirmed this prediction quantitatively during the now famous total eclipse of 29 May 1919 by observing starlight bent by the mass of the sun. Microlensing is the name given to a related phenomenon: the short flash of light produced when a cosmic body, acting as a gravitational lens, changes the intensity of visible light from a more distant, background star as the body's motion fortuitously moves in front of it.

MUSE's View Of The Hubble Ultra Deep Field

This video gives a close-up view of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field region, a tiny but much-studied region in the constellation of Fornax, as observed with the MUSE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. But this rich and colourful picture only gives a very partial view of the power of the MUSE data, which also provide a spectrum for each pixel in the picture. This data set has allowed astronomers not only to measure distances for far more of these galaxies than before — a total of 1600 — but also to find out much more about each of them. Surprisingly 72 new galaxies were found that had eluded deep imaging with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

This video sequence shows the Hubble Ultra Deep Field region and highlights in blue the glowing haloes of gas around many distant galaxies discovered using the MUSE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile. The discovery of so many huge haloes, which radiate ultraviolet Lyman-alpha radiation, around many distant galaxies is one of the many results coming out of this very deep spectroscopic survey.

This sequence starts with an image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field from the MUSE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope. The first grey circles that appear mark galaxies that had had their distances well measured before the MUSE survey. The more numerous reddish circles that follow are new measurements from MUSE, about 1600 in total. The final crosses mark the positions of galaxies that were only detected in the MUSE spectroscopic data and which were totally invisible to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The colours of the crosses indicate distance, with green closest and red most distant.

Sometimes intuitive, large-scale phenomena can give us incredible insights into the extremely unintuitive world of quantum mechanics.

Today the humble sound wave is going to open the door to really understanding Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, and, ultimately quantum fields and Hawking radiation.

One of the most difficult ideas to swallow in quantum mechanics is Werner Heisenberg’s famous uncertainty principle. It expresses the fundamental limit on the knowability of our universe. We’ve discussed it in our early videos on quantum mechanics, but it’s time we looked a little deeper. See, the apparent weirdness of the uncertainty principle hints at the even weirder underlying reality that gives rise to it. The universe we experience seems to be constructed of singular particles with well-defined properties. But this intuitive, mechanical reality is emergent from underlying reality in which the particles that form matter arise from of the combination of an infinity of possible properties. And forget matter - the vacuum itself is the sum of infinite possible particles. If we fully unravel this idea we’ll be on the verge of tackling things like Hawking radiation. But as you’ll see today, in that unraveling we are led, unavoidably, to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

This bright fireball was recorded on the night of Dec. 6 at 5:22 local time (4:22 universal time) over the Mediterranean Sea, bewteen the coasts of Mallorca and Valencia. The event was produced by a meteoroid that hit the atmosphere at about 140.000 km/h. It began at an altitude of around 100 km over the sea. It ended at height of about 52 km. This meteor event has been recorded in the framework of the SMART project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo) and Calar Alto (Almería).

These tests simulate the noise and shaking the spacecraft will experience during its launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, scheduled for 2018. Parker Solar Probe’s integration and testing team must check over the spacecraft and systems to make sure everything is still in optimal working condition after experiencing these rigorous conditions – including a check of the solar arrays, which will provide electrical power to the spacecraft. Parker Solar Probe will explore the Sun's outer atmosphere and make critical observations that will answer decades-old questions about the physics of stars. The resulting data will also help improve how we forecast major eruptions on the Sun and subsequent space weather events that can impact life on Earth, as well as satellites and astronauts in space. The mission is named for Eugene N. Parker, whose profound insights into solar physics and processes have helped shape the field of heliophysics.

In the first half, business consultant and financial writer George Ure updated his predictions, his analysis of the economy, and shared his most recent work tying together many obscure phenomena including missing flights, levitating stones, and the Bermuda Triangle. Looking at the Bruce Gernon flight through the Bermuda Triangle, in which he experienced a kind of time warp while enveloped in a green fog, Ure sought an electronic explanation. But he discovered that it was sound wave resonance not electricity that was at the core of the phenomenon, as well as other anomalous incidents such as the mysterious 'foo fighter' UFOs in WWII, and the trumpets in the Bible. Suspended particulates in the air could also be a factor in the anomalies, he added.

Ure is still predicting a crash of the stock market. He believes it will happen over a two-year span, falling all the way down to 7,000 or 8,000 from its current high of around 25,000. A possible catalyst could be war with North Korea, he noted. One benefit of a war effort, he continued, is that it could increase the efforts to recycle various materials.

Bob Berman, one of America's top astronomy writers, is currently a columnist for Astronomy, a host on NPR's Northeast Public Radio, and the science editor of Old Farmer's Almanac. In the latter half, he discussed various science topics, cosmology, and celestial threats to Earth. The universe, he commented, does not have a fixed size, and thus could be considered "size-less." Interestingly, the invisible spectrum which includes X-rays and microwaves, is all around us, and makes up most of reality, he pointed out.

"Some solar experts," Berman said, "are wondering whether we might be on the verge of a new...Maunder Minimum"-- the last one started in 1645 and correlated with cooler weather. An unknown, unseen "planetary mass object" may lurk in the outer reaches of our solar system, according to new research on the orbits of minor planets, published in the Astronomical Journal. This object would be different from — and much closer than — the so-called Planet Nine, a planet whose existence yet awaits confirmation.

In the paper, Kat Volk and Renu Malhotra of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, or LPL, present compelling evidence of a yet-to-be- discovered planetary body with a mass somewhere between that of Mars and Earth. The mysterious mass, the authors show, has given away its presence — for now — only by controlling the orbital planes of a population of space rocks known as Kuiper Belt objects, or KBOs, in the icy outskirts of the solar system. .

The age-old mystery of why otherwise healthy dolphins, whales and porpoises get stranded along coasts worldwide deepens: After a collaboration between NASA scientists and marine biologists, new research suggests space weather is not the primary cause of animal beachings — but the research continues. The collaboration is now seeking others to join their search for the factors that send ocean mammals off course, in the hopes of perhaps one day predicting strandings before they happen. Scientist have long sought the answer to why such animals get beached, and one recent collaboration hoped to find a clear cut solution: Scientists from a cross-section of fields pooled massive data sets to see if disturbances to the magnetic field around Earth could be what confuses these sea creatures, known as cetaceans. Cetaceans are thought to use Earth's magnetic field to navigate. Since intense solar storms can disturb the magnetic field, the scientists wanted to determine whether they could, by extension, actually interfere with animals' internal compasses and lead them astray. During this first attempt, the scientists -- from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland; the International Fund for Animal Welfare, or IFAW; and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, or BOEM -- were not able to hammer down a causal connection. Now, the team is opening their study up much wider: They're asking other scientists to participate in their work and contribute data to the search for the complex set of causes for such strandings.

We once thought our Solar System was normal, average. How wrong we were, how varied the planetary systems are out there. It turns out, the migration of planets played a huge role in the Solar System we see today. In 1995, astronomers found the first ever planet orbiting another main-sequence star. The star was 51 Pegasi, and the planet was like nothing astronomers had ever expected to see. It has less than the mass of Jupiter, but orbits its star every 4 days. Even Mercury in our own Solar System needs 88 days to orbit once around the Sun. But 4 days? That’s just crazy. As astronomers continued to search the skies, more and more of these massive planets orbiting their stars so closely turned up. A few decades after their first discovery, we now know of dozens of these hot Jupiters. Not in every system, but it does appear that about 1.2% of stars have hot Jupiters orbiting around them. Old models of planetary formation, based on our Solar System say that you should get rocky worlds close to the star, gas planets in the middle, and ice worlds farther out. The blasts of radiation from a newly forming star should have cleared out excess material from the inner orbits, stopping the formation of worlds. A newly discovered supermassive black hole is challenging what scientists know of the early universe Astronomers have discovered the oldest supermassive black hole ever found — a behemoth that grew to 800 million times the mass of the sun when the universe was just 5 percent of its current age, a new study finds. This newfound giant black hole, which formed just 690 million years after the Big Bang, could one day help shed light on a number of cosmic mysteries, such as how black holes could have reached gargantuan sizes quickly after the Big Bang and how the universe got cleared of the murky fog that once filled the entire cosmos, the researchers said in the new study. The previous record for the earliest, most distant quasar was set by ULAS J1120+0641. That quasar is located 13.04 billion light-years from Earth and existed about 750 million years after the Big Bang. The newfound quasar (and its black hole), named ULAS J1342+0928, is 13.1 billion light-years away.

Andrea Ghez | Our Galactic Center : A Unique Laboratory For The Physics & Astrophysics Of Black Holes

The proximity of our Galaxy's center presents a unique opportunity to study a galactic nucleus with orders of magnitude higher spatial resolution than can be brought to bear on any other galaxy. After more than a decade of diffraction-limited imaging on large ground-based telescopes, the case for a supermassive black hole at the Galactic center has gone from a possibility to a certainty, thanks to measurements of individual stellar orbits. The rapidity with which these stars move on small-scale orbits indicates a source of tremendous gravity and provides the best evidence that supermassive black holes, which confront and challenge our knowledge of fundamental physics, do exist in the Universe. This work was made possible through the use of speckle imaging techniques, which corrects for the blurring effects of the earth's atmosphere in post-processing and allowed the first diffraction-limited images to be produced with these large ground-based telescopes. Further progress in high-angular resolution imaging techniques on large, ground- based telescopes has resulted the more sophisticated technology of adaptive optics, which corrects for these effects in real time. This has increased the power of imaging by an order of magnitude and permitted spectroscopic study at high resolution on these telescopes for the first time. With adaptive optics, high resolution studies of the Galactic center have shown that what happens near a supermassive back hole is quite different than what theoretical models have predicted, which changes many of our notions on how galaxies form and evolve over time. By continuing to push on the cutting-edge of high-resolution technology, we will be able to capture the orbital motions of stars with sufficient precision to test Einstein’s General theory of Relativity as well as theories of galaxy formation and evolution - all in regimes that have never been probed before.

More archives come to light that the radiation belts, which begin at 1000 miles altitude and continue an additional 25,000 miles, are impassible to astronauts. Thusly, earth orbit at 250 miles (where the space station resides, is achievable, yet travel to the moon is not. Be sure to check out this short video next (linked below) in which NASA's "Orion" spokesperson Kelly Smith accidentally admits on camera that the technology DOES NOT YET EXIST to protect crews from the "Dangerous Radiation" of the Van Allen Radiation Belts. (The purpose of the Orion mission was to send two Geiger Counters into the Radiation Belts and then return them to earth, to see if Radiation Shielding could be developed IN THE FUTURE to protect crews from this Lethal Radiation Exposure, if they wished to SOME FUTURE DAY travel to the moon.) When Bart Sibrel asked NASA to provide him, as a Journalist, with the Radiation Readings from the two Geiger Counters onboard the Orion spacecraft, he was informed by NASA that this information was "Classified". The question is, if the temperature of the sun, or the amount of helium in Jupiter's atmosphere, is not classified, why would the Amount of Radiation in the Radiation Belts surrounding Earth be classified? (After all, these readings are merely a part of nature, and taxpayer funds were used to acquire this scientific data, so why not share this information with the public and scientists?) The reason for keeping these Radiation Readings a secret, is the fact that if NASA shared them, it would prove the Radiation Belts to be too severe for humans to survive passing through them on a trip to the moon. The public might then ask: How then did the Apollo crews survive passing through this admitted "Dangerous Radiation" nearly 50 Years Earlier when they just acknowledged that the technology to do so has YET TO BE INVENTED?

65 million years ago, a large asteroid collided with Earth near present-day Chicxulub, Mexico. The impact was a climactic event that likely contributed to dinosaur extinction. Today, Earth remains vulnerable to asteroid collisions. In recent history, space rocks have landed in The United States, Russia, and elsewhere. In the event of a potential asteroid collision, NASA has developed several options for dealing with the threat. Researchers at NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies and Jet Propulsion Laboratory have proposed using blunt force, weaponized deflection or a theoretical tool called a gravity tractor to deflect impact. In addition to developing contingency plans, NASA scientists are also searching the sky for future asteroid threats. Though the rest of the story is not yet written, how much of it may yet depend on what each of us does for the greater good before collapse occurs? How much could we collectively affect the equation for the better if we all efficiently engaged in the battle to sound the alarm? None are helpless, all are needed at the front lines of the fight to wake the masses. If we are to have any chance of turning the tide, the effort will take all of us.

Mystery as NASA Hosts Media Teleconference to Announce 'Major' Discovery. NASA will host a media teleconference at 1 p.m. EST Thursday, Dec. 14, to announce the latest discovery made by its planet-hunting Kepler space telescope. The discovery was made by researchers using machine learning from Google. Machine learning is an approach to artificial intelligence, and demonstrates new ways of analyzing Kepler data. NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has gazed at more than 150,000 stars and continues to transmit back data that leads to important discoveries of celestial objects in our galaxy, including first-time observations of planets outside our solar system. When Kepler launched in March 2009, scientists didn’t know how common planets were beyond our solar system. Thanks to Kepler’s treasure trove of discoveries, astronomers now believe there may be at least one planet orbiting every star in the sky. Kepler completed its prime mission in 2012 and went on to collect data for an additional year in an extended mission. In 2014, the spacecraft began a new extended mission called K2, which continues the search for planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets, while introducing new research opportunities to study young stars, supernovae and other cosmic phenomena.

Where’s our home galaxy, the Milky Way, in this interactive? Look below at the still graphic, for the yellow letters marked MW. Our Milky Way is part of what’s called the Local Group, which spans about 10 million light-years and contains several dozen galaxies. The Local Group, in turn, is part of the Virgo Supercluster, which spans just over 100 million light-years and is thought to contain at least 100 galaxy groups and clusters. The interactive above is part of a study by a team of astronomers from Maryland, Hawaii, Israel, and France. They say it’s the most detailed map ever of the orbits of galaxies in our extended local neighborhood. It shows the past motions of some 1,400 galaxies within 100 million light-years of our Milky Way.

NASA’s Kepler space telescope was launched in 2009 and measured the brightness of 200,000 stars at unprecedented precision for over four years, with the prime mission goal of detecting Earth-sized exoplanets. Now after another four, Kepler’s final planet catalog is complete --- over 4,000 planet candidates have been found, with 50 of them possibly rocky and capable of having liquid water. For the first time in human history, we can calculate how common planets the same size and temperature as Earth are, a key component to SETI’s goal of figuring out how common life may be in the universe. The K2 mission began three years ago, and uses the Kepler spacecraft to stare at many different parts of the sky for 80 days at a time. A broad portion of the Astronomical community chooses what targets to observe, resulting in a wide variety of science, including supernovae, galaxies, stars, and of course exoplanets. K2 has found over 300 confirmed exoplanets and an additional 500 candidates. Some of these are likely to be habitable, and many of them are prime targets to be observed by future missions, such as the James Webb space telescope. We'll discuss what we may learn about these worlds over the next few decades, and what future missions are being planned to find planets to which our descendants may one day travel.

The second planet is swinging behind the sun and getting lost in the glare. Human eyes can't see it, but coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) can. For approximately the next two months, Venus will be a bright dot in daily SOHO coronagraph images, moving from right to left. SOHO will be able to track Venus as it passes by the sun, transitioning from a Morning Star in 2017 to an Evening Star in 2018. Superior conjunction, when Venus is almost directly behind the sun, occurs on Jan. 8, 2018.

Where do most of the elements essential for life on Earth come from? The answer: inside the furnaces of stars and the explosions that mark the end of some stars' lives. Astronomers have long studied exploded stars and their remains — known as "supernova remnants" — to better understand exactly how stars produce and then disseminate many of the elements on Earth and throughout the cosmos. Cassiopeia A, or Cas A for short, is one of the most intensely studied of these supernova remnants. A new image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the location of different elements in the remains of the explosion: silicon, sulfur, calcium, and iron. Each of these elements produces X-rays within narrow energy ranges, allowing maps of their location to be created. Astronomers also see the blast wave from the explosion in the form of the blue outer ring. X-ray telescopes such as Chandra are important to study supernova remnants and the elements they produce because these events generate extremely high temperatures — millions of degrees — that remain even thousands of years after the explosion. This means that many supernova remnants, including Cas A, glow most strongly at X-ray wavelengths that are undetectable with other types of telescopes. Chandra's sharp X-ray vision helps astronomers not only determine what elements are present in Cas A, but also how much of each there is. For example, Cas A has dispersed about 10,000 Earth masses worth of sulfur alone, and about 20,000 Earth masses of silicon. The iron in Cas A weighs about 70,000 times that of the Earth, and astronomers detect a whopping one million Earth masses worth of oxygen being ejected into space from Cas A, equivalent to about three times the mass of the Sun. Chandra has repeatedly observed Cas A since the telescope was launched into space in 1999. It will continue to do so, revealing new information about the dense core left behind in the center of Cas A, details of the powerful explosion, and specifics of how the important debris is ejected into space.

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are a newly discovered astrophysical phenomenon consisting of short (few ms) bursts of radio waves. FRBs occur roughly 1000 times per sky per day. From their dispersion measures, these events are clearly extragalactic and possibly generally at cosmological distances. One FRB is known to repeat and indeed has been localized to a dwarf galaxy at redshift 0.2. Nevertheless, the origin of FRBs, whether repeating or not, is presently unknown. In this talk I will review FRB properties as well as highlight efforts to find FRBs, including a new Canadian radio telescope, CHIME, that is predicted to make major progress on the FRB problem.

Known as Mission 7 (M7), the mission featured the next-generation booster and the first flight of Crew Capsule 2.0. Crew Capsule 2.0 features large windows, measuring 2.4 feet wide, 3.6 feet tall. M7 also included 12 commercial, research and education payloads onboard. Crew Capsule 2.0 reached an apogee of 322,405 feet AGL/326,075 feet MSL (98.27 kilometers AGL/99.39 kilometers MSL). The booster reached an apogee of 322,032 feet AGL/325,702 feet MSL (98.16 kilometers AGL/99.27 kilometers MSL).

On Dec. 14, at 4:48 local time (3:48 universal time) this bright Geminid meteor was recorded over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Asteroid Phaeon that hit the atmosphere at about 122.000 km/h. It began at an altitude of around 100 km over the province of Palencia and ended at a height of about 56 km over the province of Segovia. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo) and Sevilla.

Artificial Intelligence & NASA Data Used To Discover Eighth Planet Circling Distant Star

Our solar system now is tied for most number of planets around a single star, with the recent discovery of an eighth planet circling Kepler-90, a Sun-like star 2,545 light years from Earth. The planet was discovered in data from NASA’s Kepler space telescope. The newly-discovered Kepler-90i -- a sizzling hot, rocky planet that orbits its star once every 14.4 days -- was found by researchers from Google and The University of Texas at Austin using machine learning. Machine learning is an approach to artificial intelligence in which computers “learn.” In this case, computers learned to identify planets by finding in Kepler data instances where the telescope recorded signals from planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets.

Stars Forming Precariously Close To The Galaxy's Supermassive Black Hole!

The environment around a supermassive black hole at the centers of galaxies are turbulent and dangerous places for stars to reside.

Surprisingly, it appears that stars can survive and actually be formed near a super massive black hole despite the tremendous tidal forces at play. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) suggest that star formation is indeed occurring surprisingly close to Sgr A* (at the Milky Way center). How is this possible? What sort of environment would allow this to happen?

ESA is taking advantage of Novespace’s latest 'Zero-G' aircraft to perform a number of experiments in microgravity. Twelve experiments - which include six by professional scientists and six by students as part of ESA’s Fly Your Thesis programme - took to the skies for three series of 31 parabolas off the coast of France. Conditions of microgravity, or weightlessness, are unique for research ranging from fundamental physics, testing Einstein’s weak equivalence principle, to psychology, neuroscience and the deployment of a balloon that may one day make measurements while falling through Mars’ atmosphere.

ESA Euronews : Ariane 6

The race is on to build the new launch pad for the Ariane 6 rocket, due to make its maiden voyage in July 2020. Construction is in full swing in French Guiana as Europe builds not only a new rocket but also a new way of launching rockets, in a bid to face down competition from the likes of Space X.

When Euronews visited, around 500 people were active on the site from six in the morning until ten at night, with attention focused on two key elements of the pad - firstly the huge flame trench which will take the hot gases away from the rocket on launch, and the new building in which the Ariane 6 will be built.

SpaceX is targeting launch of the Commercial Resupply Services 13 (CRS-13) mission from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force station in Florida for 7:35 a.m. PST, or 15:35 UTC, on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017

This mission marks the first time SpaceX is flying both a flight-proven Falcon 9 and a flight-proven Dragon spacecraft. Falcon 9’s first stage previously supported the CRS-11 mission in June 2017 and the Dragon spacecraft previously supported the CRS-6 mission in April 2015.

Dragon will deliver about 4,800 pounds of cargo and material to support science investigations aboard the space station. After about one month attached to the space station, Dragon will return with results of earlier experiments, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California.

This bright meteor event overflew Morocco on Dec. 14. It was spotted from several observatories in Spain at 4:45 local time (3:45 universal time). The event is NOT a Geminid, despite it was recorded during the activity peak of this meteor shower. It began at an altitude of 114 km over Morocco and ended at a height of 61 over the city of Melilla.
