Ursid Meteor Shower 2017

The annual Ursid meteor shower always peaks near the time of the December solstice, so, in 2017, look for some possible activity over the next several nights.

The forecast calls for the night of December 21-22 or December 22-23 to be the peak night. The meteor activity begins annually around December 17 and runs for a week plus, until the 25th or 26th.

The Ursids produce a handful of meteors or shooting stars every hour, usually in the range of five to 10 per hour. However, this shower has been known to produce short bursts of over 100 meteors per hour.

This meteor shower is named for its radiant point which is located near the star Beta Ursae Minoris in the constellation Ursa Minor. Meteors will appear to be streaming out from the radiant, but they can show up all across the sky.

The Ursids are associated with Comet 8P/Tuttle, which was discovered in 1790 and then re-discovered by Horace Tuttle in 1858. The comet has a period of 14 years. The Ursids occur when Earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left along the comet's orbit.

The shower itself was first recorded in England in 1900, and also spotted in Germany in the decades following.

You need only your eyes to see meteor showers; in fact, binoculars and telescopes are a bad idea, because they narrow your field of view. Find a place as far away from lights as possible, especially since the Ursids are faint.
Prop yourself up so you are facing nearby Ursa Minor, and dress warmly if it's cold. You'll have best results after giving your eyes about 20-30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.

Shooting stars are more officially called meteors. Before they hit the Earth's atmosphere, they are called meteoroids. Meteors that reach the ground are called meteorites, although it's very uncommon for the debris that makes up meteor showers to make it down without totally burning up in the atmosphere, because these pieces are so small.

A New Model For Understanding Jupiter's Climate

Climate patterns and storms on Jupiter can have striking similarities to those on Earth. One such pattern is a four-year temperature cycle in the Jovian upper atmosphere called the QQO.

This cycle has a little sibling in Earth's stratosphere that can influence the transport of aerosols and the formation of hurricanes, making it an active area of climate research. Now, scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have developed a new model for understanding Jupiter's QQO, and it could lead to a better climate model for Earth.

A retired Professor of History at Temple University in Philadelphia, Jacobs has been a UFO researcher since 1966 and is the pre-eminent UFO abduction researcher in the country. He has lectured widely on the subject both internationally and at colleges and universities across the United States.

NASA tested parachutes for the space agency’s Orion spacecraft on December 15, 2017, at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground located in Arizona. This was the fifth test to validate the design of the parachute system for NASA’s crew-rated spacecraft. Dark matter is the mysterious and pervasive substance that constitutes most — about 85% — of the matter in our Universe. Although scientists have made progress in better understanding dark matter, the true nature of this invisible material remains elusive.

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory plays an important role in the search to learn about dark matter. One way that astronomers have used Chandra to investigate dark matter has been through the study of a mysterious signal seen in the X-ray data. In 2014, astronomers reported they found a spike of intensity at a very specific energy in Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the hot gas in the Perseus and other galaxy clusters. This spike, or emission line, is at an energy of 3.5 kiloelectron volts, or keV (pronounced "kay-ee-vee"), and could not easily be explained as emission from known elements. Therefore, one possibility was that this line was produced by dark matter particles.

Naturally, determining the true nature of dark matter would be a huge discovery. And as Carl Sagan famously said, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Therefore, astronomers have been working hard both to replicate the initial results and also provide explanations for all of the observations connected to this original finding.

Now a new team of astronomers has provided an innovative interpretation of the observations surrounding this 3.5 keV line. They propose that there is another mechanism at work, namely the absorption of X-ray light by mystery particles. If this is true, then it's possible that the 3.5 keV line may, in fact, be produced by dark matter particles. While these ideas need to be confirmed with future observations, it may be that the prospect of determining the nature of the darkest of matter may never have been more so bright.

In 2014, astronomers detected an unusual feature in X-ray data from Perseus and other galaxy clusters.

Since then, Chandra and other X-ray telescopes have taken more observations to replicate the finding.

The existence and interpretation of this spike in X-ray light has been controversial and difficult to explain.

Now, a new team of astronomers has reanalyzed these and other data and come up with a fresh take on this debate.

They suggest that dark matter particles in the galaxy clusters are both absorbing and emitting X-rays.

If the new model turns out to be correct, it could provide a path for scientists to identify the true nature of dark matter.

This 1958 “The Big Picture” film covers the January 31, 1958 launching of Explorer I, the first satellite launched by the United States. The project was a collaboration that included the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville, Alabama, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Dr. James van Allen of the University of Iowa. This film focuses on the development, preparation and launching of the Army’s Jupiter-C launch vehicle. Explorer 1 was the US contribution to the International Geophysical Year 1957-1958. Explorer 1 revolved around Earth in a looping orbit that took it as close as 354 kilometers (220 miles) to Earth and as far as 2,515 kilometers (1,563 miles). It made one orbit every 114.8 minutes, or a total of 12.54 orbits per day. The satellite itself was 203 centimeters (80 inches) long and 15.9 centimeters (6.25 inches) in diameter. Explorer 1 made its final transmission on May 23, 1958. It entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up on March 31, 1970, after more than 58,000 orbits.

Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope have for the first time directly observed granulation patterns on the surface of a star outside the Solar System — the ageing red giant π1 Gruis.

A remarkable image from the PIONIER instrument reveals the convective cells that make up the surface of this huge star, which is 350 times larger than the Sun. Each cell covers more than a quarter of the star’s diameter and measures about 120 million kilometres across.

Peter has had an active interest in the UFO phenomenon from his early boyhood. He experienced his first UFO sighting over the St. Louis municipal airport in the summer of 1954, and he investigated his first UFO case during the summer of 1965 in Exeter, New Hampshire. In addition, Peter has been witness to several anomalous events, possibly UFO related, including a dramatic sighting over Baja California in February 1990, and several nighttime sightings over Washington State during 1992. His most recent sighting occurred over Eastern Washington in October 2011.

In addition to being the Director of the National UFO Reporting Center, Peter is a current member of MUFON, and is a former Co-State Section Director (King County), and former Director of Investigation, for the Washington State chapter of MUFON.

December solstice 2017 arrives on December 21 at 16 28 UTC. High summer for the Southern Hemisphere. For the Northern Hemisphere, the return of more sunlight!

The winter solstice is when the Sun's rays are directly over the tropic of capricorn 23 1/2 degrees south of the equator. The solstice is when the Earth is tilted most away from the Sun on its axis. The winter solstice marks the longest night and shortest day in the northern hemisphere while in the southern hemisphere will have their longest day. The Sun stays below the north pole horizon during the winter solstice. This is the beginning of the winter in the northern hemisphere. Days will begin lengthening after winter solstice. That leads up to the summer solstice in June.

The winter solstice is different than the equinox.
The equinox is when the Sun's rays are directly over the equator. That happens twice a year when day and night are equal lengths.

A couple of years ago, I came across a new video of James traveling in Australia. At that time I was living there too. So I watched the video, about Crows or maybe it was Ravens and an Aboriginal tribal person that he was talking to, in the Outback, thousands of miles from where I was watching this new video. Half way through the video, I suddenly remembered I had my rent to pay, that evening to the land lady. I put the video of James on pause, jumped in my car and tore up the road to get my rent money from the automatic teller in the street of that outer suburban town. As I got back to my car and opened the door to get in, I heard a raven or crow. I looked up at in on the roof of the shops on the other side of the road from where I stood and I thought of James and his video that I had just been watching. I then noticed some other folk as I turned my head a little further and could see they were also looking up at the crow or raven. I thought it odd that someone else was looking up at it as folk tend to keep their eyes down, except for folk in the alternative community. As I focused on them, I realized that I knew 2 of them from online videos, and the third person was James Gilliland! What are the chances? I went over and introduced myself and got a communal selfie. I then went to a Skywatch he was holding at the beach. We saw a few bright lights moving, and when I drove home afterwards, and ot out of my car, late at night, a 1 hour drive from the skywatch beach, the sky by this time was mostly covered in a blanket of cloud. Then a light appeared under the cloud and skipped like a stone skipping across the surface of a pond, except upside down and on a blanket of cloud instead, before popping out of sight. I think James has his own entourage of craft or whatever you might call them, orbs? Whatever. Anyway, I had only seen lights doing different things from that before and since then. So I think it followed me home, just to let me know it was aware of me. I have no doubt it is linked to our consciousness. It seemed playful. I have seen other stuff, but not one of those again.

This beautiful meteor, which resembles a Christmas star, was spotted over Spain on Dec. 23, at 22:07 local time (21:07 universal time). It was produced by a fragment from a comet that hit the atmosphere at about 43000 km/h. The meteor overflew the Mediterranean Sea. It began at a height of around 93 km, and ended at an altitude of about 60 km over the sea. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Sevilla.

WFIRST Will See The Big Picture Of The Universe

Scheduled to launch in the mid-2020s, the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will function as Hubble’s wide-eyed cousin. While just as sensitive as Hubble's cameras, WFIRST's 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument will image a sky area 100 times larger. This means a single WFIRST image will hold the equivalent detail of 100 pictures from Hubble.

The mission’s wide field of view will allow it to generate a never-before-seen big picture of the universe, which will help astronomers explore some of the greatest mysteries of the cosmos, like why the expansion of the universe seems to be accelerating. Some scientists attribute the speed-up to dark energy, an unexplained pressure that makes up 68 percent of the total content of the cosmos.

The Wide Field Instrument will also allow WFIRST to measure the matter in hundreds of millions of distant galaxies through a phenomenon dictated by Einstein’s relativity theory. Massive objects like galaxies curve space-time in a way that bends light passing near them, creating a distorted, magnified view of far-off galaxies behind them. WFIRST will paint a broad picture of how matter is structured throughout the universe, allowing scientists to put the governing physics of its assembly to the ultimate test.

WFIRST can use this same light-bending phenomenon to study planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets. In a process called microlensing, a foreground star in our galaxy acts as the lens. When its motion randomly aligns with a distant background star, the lens magnifies, brightens and distorts the background star. WFIRST's microlensing survey will monitor 100 million stars for hundreds of days and is expected to find about 2,500 planets, well targeted at rocky planets in and beyond the region where liquid water may exist.

These results will make WFIRST an ideal companion to missions like NASA's Kepler and the upcoming Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which are designed to study larger planets orbiting closer to their host stars. Together, discoveries from these three missions will help complete the census of planets beyond our solar system. The combined data will also overlap in a critical area known as the habitable zone, the orbiting distance from a host star that would permit a planet's surface to harbor liquid water — and potentially life.

By pioneering an array of innovative technologies, WFIRST will serve as a multipurpose mission, formulating a big picture of the universe and helping us answer some of the most profound questions in astrophysics, such as how the universe evolved into what we see today, its ultimate fate and whether we are alone.

Well I think it's huge it feels like we've turned a corner and the main difference is mainstream media being willing to give this subject a fair shake you know the story has been there for the taking for a long time if anyone wanted to look at it but of course it was easier to ignore it or make fun of it and denigrate those who are involved in it than it was to actually do the work and dig into it. But lo and behold when the New York Times finally decides to go ahead and dig into it they find that it's a legitimate story and that sort of started a tsunami of coverage that I hope is the start of a trend that lasts. I worry that American news media is sort of like American news consumers that the attention span is that comparable of that of an that and thirty seconds from now that want to move on to something else I hope that's not the case I am told that the New York Times is working on other stories there are a lot of other interviews they did that they have not used yet and that they will be pursuing it further. I think that sets a template for the other news media lets others know that if the Times can cover it that it's acceptable for them to cover it as well they don't have to worry about being slammed as being wackos Linda you and I can relate to that a little bit that how that works so I'm very hopeful that it that it leads to ongoing coverage by major media and that it lets elected officials and government officials know that it's okay to discuss this in the open you know Harry Reid I guess we're going to talk about the Harry Reid interview that I've done this week .

NASA Willing To Consider Flying Researchers On Commercial Suborbital Vehicles

As commercial suborbital vehicles capable of carrying both payloads and people prepare to enter service, NASA officials say they’re willing to consider allowing agency-funded researchers to fly on those vehicles.

In an interview after a speech at the Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference here Dec. 19, Steve Jurczyk, NASA associate administrator for space technology, said the agency would be open to allowing researchers funded by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program to fly on suborbital spacecraft to carry out their experiments.

Most galaxies lie in clusters containing from a few to thousands of objects. Our Milky Way, for example, belongs to a cluster of about fifty galaxies called the Local Group whose other large member is the Andromeda galaxy about 2.3 million light-years away. Clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound objects in the universe and form (according to current ideas) in a "bottoms-up" fashion with smaller structures developing first and larger groupings assembling later in cosmic history. Dark matter plays an important role in this growth process.

A supermoon is set to light up the sky on New Year's Day, as the lunar cycle and calendar cycle align for a rare astronomical treat.

New Year's first full moon will peak on the night between 1 and 2 January 2018, at around 02:24 GMT (January 1, 9 24 p.m. ET).

It was known by early Native American tribes as the "Wolf Moon", because this was the time of the year when hungry wolf packs howled outside their camps.

The 2018 Wolf Moon is also a "supermoon", which means it coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth - known as the perigee.

Astronomers have discovered that a star in the Pisces constellation is eating other planets. The star, which is known as RZ Piscium, is located about 550 lightyears away from Earth. The sun-like star has been disintegrating the planets in its galaxy that have been orbiting too close to it, leaving trails of planetary debris in its wake. As a result of the disintegration, there’s a ring of space dust surrounding the star.

On January 1, 1801, a Sicilian astronomer named Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the dwarf planet Ceres orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter. At the time, Ceres was considered to be a planet. But after astronomers found more things orbiting in the same region over the next few decades, they demoted Ceres and all those other objects to asteroid status. However, in 2006, the big debate about Pluto's planetary status led astronomers to redefine what it means to be a planet, and Ceres was reclassified as a dwarf planet along with. While it is the smallest of the known dwarf planets, it is the largest object in the asteroid belt.

You have been busy Star Tsar, very thorough. Yes, you found the correct raven video(s) that I was referring to. Then you posted a video by the same folk filmed on the 17th Dec. I have only seen him filming orbs up until that video. Where I saw the skipping orbs/craft under the clouds light at my home just after the James Gilliland Skywatch, they both hosted, was smack dab in the middle of where that 17th Dec vid was filmed, between the top and bottom of the mountain. Mt Dandenong is probably the best veiwpoint for Melbourne, particularly the car park at Sky High Restaurant. That person lives at the bottom of the same mountain, but around the other side. I don't like mentioning names when I feel some folk do it more for the personal "bling" than for just sharing. Some folk seek their version of fame and revenue and take advantage of that. Where I lived was half way up the mountain.

I have no doubt Star Tsar that they see these things, the two men. It is generally different from what I see when I rarely sky watch now. I get the impression these things follow them about on their travels. Sort of like a PR tour. I think it does not matter where they go, they can be there with the intent of seeing them, if they wish to be seen. What is seen can differ from person to person but there are usually common and less common things seen on a sky watch. Greer covers most of them. The more you take the time to do it, the more you tend to see.

'The Inca Steps' Of Quenuani, Peru : Ancient Technology In South America

The unusual site of "Villa Quenuani" is between Yunguyo and Cuturapi, next to Lake Titicaca near the Peru/Bolivia border on the Peruvian side. It consists of huge, complicated carved steps, seats and niches in ancient compressed ash, that probably came from the nearby Cerro Khappia mountain. Khappia is also the quarry that the andesite stones of Puma Punku and Tiwanaku came from. Ceremonies still take place to welcome in the traditional new year with the local Aymara, who see this site as sacred. It could have once been used as an Inca auditorium that looks out on to Lake Titicaca, or a place of ceremony and ritual, but its purpose and origins are still unclear. The site is rarely visited and after several years of attempting to locate the site, we managed to find it. Filmed on the Hidden Inca Tours/Megalithomania Tour in December 2017.

On January 2, 2004, NASA's Stardust spacecraft flew by comet Wild 2 to collect some comet dust and bring it back to Earth. Stardust was the first robotic sample return mission of its kind. It didn't land on the comet, but it flew close enough to collect dust grain samples from the comet's coma. This is the cloudy region around a comet where evaporating ice and other particles are blown away from the comet's surface, forming the comet's characteristic "tail." Stardust also took some photos of the comet's icy nucleus before bringing the dust samples back to Earth less than two weeks later.

On January 3, 2004, NASA's Spirit rover landed on Mars! Also known as Mars Exploration Rover 2, this was the first of NASA's twin rovers to land on the Red Planet. The other was named Opportunity. These rovers were designed to last just 90 days on Mars, but Spirit lasted more than six years! It touched down at the Gusev crater, where scientists believed to be an old lake bed that was once filled with water. NASA named the landing site Columbia Memorial Station to honor the astronauts who were killed in the Columbia disaster less than a year earlier.

If I were going to choose a good position to sky watch, it would be there. Yes, there are higher spots, but unless you lie flat on the hard ground, it gets awfully uncomfy while waiting to see lights moving in the sky that are not man made (obviously, not back then anyway). Carving those seating areas are like sitting in a cinema. Prime position gets the best view with a table for munchies.

I regressed a natural therapist a few years back, and it just so happened that she went back to a life where she was tasked to put information from ET's that they would communicate with at night, in the sky, and carve it into rock. She felt it was most likely Peru, that the culture did not have written language. She was highly spiritually trained along with a dozen or so others to communicate with these beings and carve it into the rock, so we can find it in this current time period. So as soon as I saw that video, I thought of her, and I also thought it an excellent spot to watch the sky for craft.

On top of that I live in a very rough part of the city where it's near impossible to find a safe place to nestle down in.

This came just six months after Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first people to ever set foot on the moon. Instead of launching another crew of astronauts to the moon, NASA decided to use the Saturn V rocket that was built for Apollo 20 to launch the Skylab space station instead. Budget cuts along with the nearly fatal disaster that happened with Apollo 13 led NASA to eventually cut two more Apollo missions. Canceling these missions also freed up resources for the space shuttle program.

Mars & Jupiter Put On Spectacular Early-Morning Planetary Display

Jupiter and Mars will share the same right ascension, with Jupiter passing 0°12' to the north of Mars. This is the first conjunction of Mars and Jupiter since October 15, 2017 and the next one won’t be until March 20, 2020.

At around the same time, the two objects will also make a close approach, technically called an appulse.

Jupiter will be at mag -1.9, and Mars at mag 1.4, both in the constellation Libra.

The pair will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

Astronomers Discover An M-Dwarf Eclipsing Binary System

But lo and behold when the New York Times finally decides to go ahead and dig into it they find that it's a legitimate story and that sort of started a tsunami of coverage that I hope is the start of a trend that lasts. I worry that American news media is sort of like American news consumers that the attention span is that comparable of that of an that and thirty seconds from now that want to move on to something else I hope that's not the case I am told that the New York Times is working on other stories there are a lot of other interviews they did that they have not used yet and that they will be pursuing it further. I think that sets a template for the other news media lets others know that if the Times can cover it that it's acceptable for them to cover it as well they don't have to worry about being slammed as being wackos Linda you and I can relate to that a little bit that how that works so I'm very hopeful that it that it leads to ongoing coverage by major media and that it lets elected officials and government officials know that it's okay to discuss this in the open you know Harry Reid I guess we're going to talk about the Harry Reid interview that I've done this week

Like its six predecessors, Surveyor 7 was a robotic spacecraft sent to demonstrate the feasibility of doing soft landings on the moon. On January 7, 1610, the Italian astronomer Galileo discovered three of Jupiter's moons: Callisto, Europa and Io. When he looked at Jupiter through his telescope, he saw what he thought were three tiny stars in the background, and he sketched their locations. The next day, he looked again and saw the three stars were not where he thought they'd be. Instead of being "fixed" in the background like other stars, they moved along with the planet, and Galileo realized that Jupiter had moons. Besides Earth's moon, these were the first natural satellites anyone had ever seen in the solar system.

Underwater shrine appears to represent the beginning of space and time in Mesoamerican mythology.

Mexican archaeologists have identified a stone “tetzacualco” – or shrine – that they think could have been constructed as a “miniature model of the universe”.

The structure is located in a pond on the side of the Iztaccihuatl volcano near Mexico City, on a site termed Nahualac.

On This Day In Space | January 8th 1973 : Soviet Union Launches 2nd Lunar Rover

On January 8, 1973, the Soviet Union launched the Luna 21 mission to land a rover on the moon. This was the second time that the Soviet Union put a rover on the moon, and it was the 13th successful lunar landing of the Luna program. Like the other Luna missions, Luna 21 was an uncrewed, robotic spacecraft. It launched on a Proton rocket and touched down in the Le Monnier crater one week later. About three hours after landing, it deployed the rover, Lunokhod 2. The rover traveled about 24 miles and took more than 80,000 photos on the moon before it accidentally rolled into a crater, where it got dust all over its solar panels and died.

In December, NASA announced two finalist concepts for a robotic mission that will launch in the mid-2020s. The first is the Comet Astrobiology Exploration Sample Return (CAESAR), which would send a fairly conventional spacecraft over to a comet to grab a chunk of its nucleus and bring it back to Earth. That's cool and all, but we're much more excited about the second finalist concept: Dragonfly, from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL), a quad octocopter that would explore Saturn's moon Titan from the air. The idea is that it would work like a planetary rover, except that it would fly instead of drive, allowing it to cover much more ground at the risk of, you know, crashing.

As 2018 began, EarthSky community photographers captured two different comets: Comet C/2016 R2 PANSTARRS (above and below) and Comet C/2017 T1 Heinze (bottom image). Neither comet was visible to the eye alone; all the images on this page were taken with the aid of telescopes. Will we have a bright comet in 2018? Conjunction Of Mercury and Saturn

Stargazers will be able to see four of the five visible planets in the early-morning sky worldwide. Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Mercury are about to align and they will be visible from Earth in a row along the horizon.

Visible planets are those that can be seen with the naked eye, as opposed to Uranus, Neptune and former planet Pluto, which require telescopes to be viewed.

Amateur astronomers will have to prepare their viewing spots as the astonishing sight will be visible until early February 2018.

Saturn, Mercury Conjunction
The planets Mercury and Saturn will be in conjunction on January 13, 2018, with Mercury passing some 0.7 degrees south of Saturn.

Before daybreak the next few mornings – January 12, 13 and 14 – try catching the close pairing of Mercury and Saturn as the predawn darkness gives way to morning dawn. Look in the sunrise direction. The lit side of the waning crescent moon will be pointing in the direction of Mercury and Saturn, with these two planets sitting quite close to the sunrise point on your horizon.

A 360-degree movie immerses viewers into a simulation of the center of our Galaxy. This visualization was enabled by data from Chandra and other telescopes and allows viewers to control their own exploration of this region. From the vantage point of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, the viewer can see about 25 Wolf-Rayet stars (white, twinkling objects) as they continuously eject stellar winds (black to red to yellow color scale). These winds collide with each other, and then some of this material (yellow blobs) spirals towards Sgr A*. The movie shows two simulations, each of which start around 350 years in the past and span 500 years. The first simulation shows Sgr A* in a calm state, while the second contains a more violent Sgr A* that is expelling its own material, thereby turning off the accretion of clumped material (yellow blobs) that is so prominent in the first portion.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope spent much of 2017 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where it underwent critical cryogenic testing inside Chamber A, a massive thermal vacuum chamber at the center. This time-lapse video compresses Webb’s approximately nine-month stay at Johnson to about two minutes.

One of the tests performed on Webb inside Chamber A was an important alignment check of the telescope’s 18 primary mirror segments, to make sure all of the gold-plated, hexagonal segments acted like a single, monolithic mirror in a space-like environment. This test also showed Webb’s science instruments were properly aligned with its mirrors and could detect simulated “starlight” within the chamber.

Built in 1965 to conduct thermal-vacuum testing on the Apollo command and service modules, Chamber A is the largest structure of its kind in the world and is a listed National Historic Landmark.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier infrared space observatory of the next decade.
