Flight Through The Orion Nebula In Visible & Infrared Light

This visualization explores the Orion Nebula using both visible and infrared light. The sequence begins with a wide-field view of the sky showing the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, then zooms down to the scale of the Orion Nebula. The visible light observation (from the Hubble Space Telescope) and the infrared light observation (from the Spitzer Space Telescope) are compared first in two-dimensional images, and then in three-dimensional models.

As the camera flies into the star-forming region, the sequence cross-fades back and forth between the visible and infrared views. The glowing gaseous landscape has been illuminated and carved by the high energy radiation and strong stellar winds from the massive hot stars in the central cluster. The infrared observations generally show cooler temperature gas at a deeper layer of the nebula that extends well beyond the visible image. In addition, the infrared showcases many faint stars that shine primarily at longer wavelengths. The higher resolution visible observations show finer details including the wispy bow shocks and tadpole-shaped proplyds. In this manner, the movie illustrates the contrasting features uncovered by multi-wavelength astronomy.

On January 11, 1787, the English astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered two moons at Uranus! Oberon and Titania were the first two Uranian moons ever discovered. The finding came just six years after Herschel actually discovered the planet itself. By now astronomers have discovered 27 moon at Uranus, and all of them are named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. Titania is the largest moon of Uranus and is named after the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Oberon is the second-largest and is named after the mythical king of the fairies in the same story.

A supermassive black hole has been caught "snacking" not once, but twice, in the J1354 galaxy about 800 million light years from Earth.

The black hole's two-course meal was served up from a stream of gas and dust from a collision with another galaxy in the past.

Scientists used X-rays from Chandra and optical data from other telescopes to track the black hole's behavior and diet.

The researchers estimate that the black hole went about 100,000 years between snacks, with a nap of inactivity in between.

Astronomers studying this galaxy want to better understand how black holes, including the one in the Milky Way, grow over time.

Astronomers have caught a supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy snacking on gas and then "burping" — not once, but twice.

The dining galaxy is known by its abbreviated name, J1354, and is about 800 million light years from Earth. Scientists used observations from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the ground-based optical telescopes to track both the behavior and diet of this monster-sized black hole.

The Chandra data revealed a bright, point-like source of X-ray emission at the center of J1354, a telltale sign of the presence of a black hole containing millions or billions of times more mass than our sun. The X-ray data also provide evidence that the supermassive black hole is embedded in a heavy veil of gas.

The researchers found evidence that in the past the supermassive black hole consumed large amounts of gas while blasting off an outflow of high-energy particles. Eventually, this outflow turned off, and then turned back on with another black hole snack about 100,000 later.

Where did the black hole get its two-course meal? The data point to the cosmic crumbs left behind from a collision with another galaxy long ago. This collision left a clumpy stream of gas and dust strewn between the two galaxies. As clumps from this stream wandered too close, they were consumed by the supermassive black hole.

Scientists think our Milky Way's own black hole has experienced at least one similar burp of its own. By understanding how a black hole like J1354 feeds, astronomers are hoping to learn more about supermassive black holes and how they grow both near and far.

The world's largest deep ocean volcanic eruption in a century happened 1000 kilometres north east of the North Island.

A gigantic pumice raft - 400 square kilometres in size - that was found floating in the ocean near New Zealand in 2012 showed the underwater eruption had occurred.

The "complex" eruption involved 14 aligned vents causing a "massive rupture". Named Havre.

Havre, which had been discovered about 600 miles from New Zealand's North Island just a decade earlier, sent a plume from 700 meters below sea level to the surface.

In 2021, a spacecraft the size of a Cheerios box will carry a small telescope into Earth orbit on an unusual mission. Its task is to monitor the flares and sunspots of small stars to assess how habitable the space environment is for planets orbiting them.
The spacecraft, known as the Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat, or SPARCS for short, is a new NASA-funded space telescope. The mission, including spacecraft design, integration and resulting science, is led by Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE).

Largest Earthquakes Of The 21st Century

This animation shows every recorded earthquake in sequence as they occurred from January 1, 2001, through December 31, 2015, at a rate of 30 days per second. The earthquake hypocenters first appear as flashes then remain as colored circles before shrinking with time so as not to obscure subsequent earthquakes. The size of the circle represents the earthquake magnitude while the color represents its depth within the earth. At the end of the animation it will first show all quakes in this 15-year period. Next, it will show only those earthquakes greater than magnitude 6.5, the smallest earthquake size known to make a tsunami. Finally it will only show those earthquakes with magnitudes of magnitude 8.0 or larger, the "great" earthquakes most likely to pose a tsunami threat when they occur under the ocean or near a coastline and when they are shallow within the earth (less than 100 km or 60 mi. deep).

This time period includes some remarkable events. Several large earthquakes caused devastating tsunamis, including 9.1 magnitude in Sumatra (26 December 2004), 8.1 magnitude in Samoa (29 September 2009), 8.8 magnitude in Chile (27 February 2010), and 9.0 magnitude off of Japan (11 March 2011). Like most earthquakes these events occurred at plate boundaries, and truly large events like these tend to occur at subduction zones where tectonic plates collide. Other, much smaller earthquakes also occur away from plate boundaries such as those related to volcanic activity in Hawaii or those related to wastewater injection wells in Oklahoma.

The great majority of earthquakes occur at tectonic plate boundaries.
The majority of great earthquakes (magnitude 8.0 or larger) are megathrust earthquakes that occur at convergent plate boundaries, also called destructive margins or subduction zones.
For an earthquake to pose a tsunami hazard it needs to vertically move the seafloor; therefore it needs to be large (typically 8.0 or larger), under or near the ocean, and shallow within the earth (less than 100 km).
During the 15-year period covered by this animation 20 earthquakes had a magnitude of 8.0 or larger:

Hubble Finds Three Giant Exoplanets & Several Brown Dwarfs In Orion Nebula

Using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to peer deep into the famous Orion Nebula, Space Telescope Institute researcher Massimo Robberto and colleagues searched for small, faint bodies. They found 17 very-low-mass brown dwarf companions to red dwarf stars, one brown dwarf pair, and one brown dwarf with a planetary companion. The astronomers also found three giant exoplanets, including a binary system where two planets orbit each other in the absence of a host star.

On January 13, 1978, NASA selected its eighth and most diverse class of astronauts yet. The Astronaut Class of 1978, also known as the "Thirty-Five New Guys," included the first six female astronauts. One of those women, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space in 1983. That same year, Guy Bluford became the first African-American man to fly to space. Their classmate Judith Resnik became the first Jewish-American in space in 1984, and Ellison Onizuka became the first Asian-American in space in 1985. This astronaut class was unlike any that came before it and kicked off a new era of diversity in space exploration.

On January 16, 1969, two crewed spacecraft docked in orbit for the first time. When the Soviet Union launched the Soyuz 4 spacecraft, only one cosmonaut was on board. But it returned with a crew of three after two cosmonauts from Soyuz 5 transferred spacecrafts in orbit. Soyuz 4 safely returned to Earth, but the one unlucky cosmonaut who was left behind in Soyuz 5 had a pretty rough landing. During reentry, the service module failed to separate from the descent module, and the spacecraft got turned upside-down. To top it off, the parachutes and soft-landing rockets failed. That cosmonaut, Boris Volynov, miraculously survived the crash — but he did lose a few teeth.

In a recent study published in the journal Science, researchers from the Arizona detachment of United States Geological Survey reported, with the help of NASA images, that they discovered significant reservoirs of water ice very close to the surface of Mars.

Researchers using NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have found eight sites where thick deposits of ice beneath Mars' surface are exposed in faces of eroding slopes.

These eight scarps, with slopes as steep as 55 degrees, reveal new information about the internal layered structure of previously detected underground ice sheets in Mars' middle latitudes.

The ice was likely deposited as snow long ago. The deposits are exposed in cross section as relatively pure water ice, capped by a layer one to two yards (or meters) thick of ice-cemented rock and dust. They hold clues about Mars' climate history. They also may make frozen water more accessible than previously thought to future robotic or human exploration missions.

Researchers who located and studied the scarp sites with the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on MRO reported the findings today in the journal Science. The sites are in both northern and southern hemispheres of Mars, at latitudes from about 55 to 58 degrees, equivalent on Earth to Scotland or the tip of South America.

On January 17, 1985, the United States launched its 1,037th and final Aerobee rocket. Aerobee rockets were the first sounding rockets that the U.S. launched to research Earth's upper atmosphere. The small, suborbital rockets measured things like temperature, pressure, radiation and ozone. The last Aerobee rocket to launch was a variation called Aerobee 150, and it lifted off from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. This rocket stood about 30 feet tall and could fly to an altitude of 170 miles with payloads weighing up to 150 pounds. This rocket's payload was a device designed to observe airglow, or the constant dim glow of Earth's atmosphere..

Use the Moon to find the bright stars of the Winter Circle!
No matter where you live worldwide, looking Southeast to overhead at nightfall you can observe the Brightest Stars in the sky.

On January 28, 2018, the moon is inside the Winter Circle. You can go outside on this date, and look for the waxing gibbous moon, then notice the stars nearby. The moon is within the Winter Circle stars on this date. All the stars of the Winter Circle are first-magnitude stars, so they should be able to withstand this night’s drenching moonlight.

The Winter Hexagon or Winter Circle/Oval is an asterism appearing to be in the form of a hexagon with vertices at Rigel, Aldebaran, Capella, Pollux, Procyon, and Sirius. It is mostly upon the Northern Hemisphere's celestial sphere.

Smaller and more regularly shaped is the Winter Triangle (also known as the Great Southern Triangle, an approximately equilateral triangle that shares two vertices (Sirius and Procyon) with the larger asterism. The third vertex is Betelgeuse, which lies near the center of the hexagon.

These three stars are three of the ten brightest objects, as viewed from Earth, outside the Solar System. Betelgeuse is also particularly easy to locate, being a shoulder of Orion, which assists stargazers in finding the triangle. Once the triangle is located, the larger hexagon may then be found.

Several of the stars in the hexagon may also be found independently of one another by following various lines traced through various stars in Orion.

The stars in the hexagon are parts of six constellations. Counter-clockwise around the hexagon, starting with Rigel, these are Orion, Taurus, Auriga, Gemini, Canis Minor, and Canis Major.

On January 18, 2002, the National Science Foundation formally opened the Gemini South telescope in Chile. This became the second telescope to make up the Gemini Observatory. Its twin telescope, Gemini North, is located in Hawaii. Together, these telescopes provide complete coverage of entire sky all around the Earth. The Gemini South telescope saw its first light in 1998, but it wasn't formally opened for observations until 2002. Since then, astronomers have used these telescopes to study supernovas, black holes, exoplanets and more.

Fireball Over Michigan : Did A Meteor Really Cause An Earthquake?

On Tuesday night, Detroit residents were startled by a bright flash of light caused by a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere above Michigan’s capital. What was first thought to be a thunder and lighting was confirmed to be a pretty rare occurrence, a member of the the American Meteor Society tells Inverse.

The unusual event resulted in a slew of viral videos that showed the night sky brilliantly light up at around 8 p.m. local time. Mike Hankey, a software developer and member of the AMS, explains that these bystanders had captured something that happens only a few times a year.

“This was a good fireball, we might get one to three good ones like this in the U.S. per year,” he tells Inverse via email. “The airburst/sonic boom was recorded on seismic sensors, often times larger meteors can be detected on these sensors.”

Without a signal in all detectors, there was no "event" to declare. Without confirmation, this would merely go down as a false alarm.

'Potentially Hazardous' Monster Asteroid Will Fly Past Earth February 4th

On February 4, 2018 'potentially hazardous asteroid' 2002 AJ129 will be flying past us, at a distance of about 2.6 million miles away. At over 10 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon at its closest point, this will be a completely safe encounter, but an important one for scientists studying these relics of the early solar system.

Discovered just over 16 years ago, on January 15, 2002, this asteroid - formally named (276033) 2002 AJ129 - was labelled as 'potentially hazardous', due to its size and how close it gets during its flybys of Earth. Any asteroid that is larger than 459 feet wide, and comes closer to Earth than 4.6 million miles (0.05 astronomical units) during any of its close approaches, is added to this category.

2002 AJ129 is somewhere between 0.3 km and 0.75 miles wide, and between the years 1900 and 2200, it makes 4 close approaches that are within the 0.05 AU limit, so it easily qualifies.

This flyby, on Feb 4, will be the closest approach by the asteroid since Feb 6, 1904, when it was just over 1.8 million miles away, and it will be the closest until Feb 5, 2087, when it will be just over 2.3 million miles away.

Such a close pass by such a large asteroid gives radio astronomers an excellent opportunity to study the object, in detail, as it whizzes past. Already, the radio telescopes at the Arecibo and Goldstone observatories are scheduled to be pointed at 2002 AJ129 during its time of closest approach.

"Our calculations indicate that asteroid 2002 AJ129 has no chance - zero - of colliding with Earth on Feb. 4," said Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a NASA press release.

On January 24, 1986, NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Uranus. This was the first time any spacecraft had ever visited Uranus. Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 1, only made it as far as Saturn before veering out of the plane of the solar system. Voyager 2 flew within 50,600 miles of Uranus and took the first and only close-up photos of the planet. During the encounter, Voyager 2 examined the rings around Uranus and discovered 10 of its 27 known moons. Voyager 2 also found that the planet's magnetic field is a twisted mess thanks to its bizarre sideways orientation. The spacecraft is now on its way out of the solar system and headed towards interstellar space.

Breaking News: TRAPPIST-1 Star System Contains Two Potentially Habitable Planets

It’s been less than a year since astronomers detected seven planets around TRAPPIST-1, a remarkable star system located 39 light years from Earth. New research suggests life could take root on at least two of these planets, thanks to a fortuitous orbital quirk.

TRAPPIST-1 has more planets than any other system we know of outside our own. These seven planets, all of which are roughly the size of Earth, are in orbit around an ultracool M dwarf—a small, red star that gets no warmer than 2,430 celsius or 4,400 F, which is less than half the heat our Sun produces. New research published in Astronomy & Astrophysics identifies two planets around TRAPPIST-1 as the most likely to harbor life, including one that may even feature a vast ocean of water.

Astronomers have conducted a large-scale survey of the invisible Milky Way using the Nobeyama 45-m Radio Telescope.

When you look up on a clear dark night, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. If you shoot a photograph of the Milky Way, you will find some dark patches with fewer stars. In these areas, clouds of gas and dust in the Milky Way block the light from background stars. By observing the radio waves emitted by the gas in these clouds, astronomers can study the invisible portions of the Milky Way.

A research group led by Tomofumi Umemoto (Assistant Professor at Nobeyama Radio Observatory), including members from the University of Tsukuba, Nagoya University, Joetsu University of Education, Kagoshima University, and other universities, used the 45-m telescope from 2014 to 2017 to create the most extensive and detailed radio maps of the Milky Way in human history. The team has completed maps covering an area as wide as 520 full moons with about 3 times the spatial resolution of previous maps.

The winter night sky, filled with brilliant stars, presents one of the best celestial views.

Orion, the Great Hunter of Greek mythology, dominates the winter sky. This constellation is among the easiest to recognize. It is full of young stars, dying stars, and many nebulae.
Betelgeuse, one of Orion’s “shoulders,” is a red supergiant star about 650 times bigger than the Sun. It shines with the brightness of tens of thousands of Suns.

Betelgeuse is near the end of its life. With the fuel at the star’s core practically depleted, the core has contracted and heated, causing the outer gaseous layers of the star to swell.

Rigel, one of Orion’s “knees,” is a triple-star system made up of two smaller stars orbiting a blue supergiant. Rigel’s blue supergiant star has a short lifespan. Blue supergiant stars are much hotter than our Sun and use up their fuel quickly.

Orion’s Belt is easy to spot. It is made up of three stars, Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka. From the left side of Orion’s Belt, look down to the Great Orion Nebula. Although barely visible to the naked eye, it is the brightest diffuse gas cloud in the night sky. (“Nebula” is Latin for “cloud.”) A small telescope unveils the details and grandeur of the nebula. Embedded inside the Orion Nebula is the Trapezium, a group of hot young stars so brilliant they cause the surrounding gas to glow.

The “Doomsday Clock” has yet again been moved closer to midnight by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. Some 12 years since it was thought lost because of a systems failure, NASA’s Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) has been discovered, still broadcasting, by an amateur astronomer. On January 29, 1989, a Soviet space probe named Phobos 2 arrived in orbit around Mars. This was the last space mission launched by the Soviet Union. Its primary purpose was to study Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos. Its journey to the Red Planet took about 6 and a half months, and it spent the next two months taking pictures of the two moons and gathering data on Mars' atmosphere. It brought along two small landers to drop on Phobos, but mission control lost contact with the spacecraft before those landers made it to the Martian moon.

George Knapp was joined by two renowned physicists who worked on the Pentagon's secret UFO study. First hour guest, Dr. Eric Davis described his role in the Pentagon program which has been front-and-center in the news since a New York Times article broke the story in mid-December of last year. He described his role in the Department of Defense program as a consultant who deduced by process of "scientific elimination" that some reported UFOs are not explainable as natural phenomena, advanced foreign technology, or misidentifications, and concluded that "all arrows pointed toward non-human origin." Davis worked for many years at Robert Bigelow’s "Skinwalker Ranch," examining data and witnessing paranormal events and UFOs. He concluded that the things he has observed are "not a natural phenomenon, so you’re pretty hard pressed to put science to it," at least in the classical sense of the term.

Second hour guest, Dr. Hal Puthoff, revealed what prompted the Department of Defense to initiate a seven-year UFO study. Puthoff described his background beginning as Naval Intelligence officer working for the NSA, to his studies in laser technology, and eventually as a pioneer in the study of remote viewing at the behest of the CIA in the mid-1970s. He defended the recent revelations of apparent government UFO disclosure and his role in Tom DeLonge’s UFO research organization as an effort to "put some sunshine on this area and get it out, so that it’s no longer a subject of ridicule." Puthoff discussed the recently released videos of apparent anomalous objects, and supporting evidence surrounding them, such as radar records and pilot descriptions. He said he had examined one of the pieces of metal that was announced in the Times article and described it as "layers of various kinds of materials that you wouldn't expect to be put together" as well as the unusual properties that are gained from this unknown method of materials engineering.

In the second half, authors and paranormal researchers Marie D. Jones and Larry Flaxman shared their fascinating look at Satan, evil spirits, and how the presence of dark angels continues to remain a part of our human experience. Flaxman said that in the Jewish religion there is actually no concept of a Devil or Hell, but rather a time of judgment and punishment, but that it is "not forever" and "is something to be embraced." Jones pointed out that Christianity and Islam share the concept of demons and fallen angels, and that Hinduism has its pantheon of evil or negative gods as well, while Buddhism seems to have no representative of supreme evil. Native American beliefs have no specific hierarchy of good and evil deities, said Jones, because Nature is seen as a central idea, but that "they do look at certain things as negative spirits as opposed to positive spirits."

Although Jones and Flaxman were careful not to inject their own opinions in their recent book, Jones protested the attitude some seem to adopt that anything inexplicable or seemingly paranormal has to be labeled "demonic" or "evil." When examining such reported creatures as aliens or Mothman, she said that we could simply "be dealing with inter-dimensional species that pop in and out of our world" with no intent to do us either good or ill, but that our fear creates this false impression. Despite the reports of malevolent entities known as the Men In Black, Flaxman says he does not believe in the accounts because they have only been mentioned "in the last 100 years, at the most."

On January 30, 1964, NASA launched the Ranger 6 spacecraft on a mission to obtain the first-ever close-up images of the surface of the moon. The spacecraft carried six television cameras to transmit videos and images of the moon, but the cameras failed, and no images were ever returned. This was the sixth mission failure for the Ranger program. Congress wasn't too happy with the series of failures and called an investigation into management problems at NASA Headquarters and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The next mission, Ranger 7, launched six months later and was a roaring success.

ESOcast 148 Light: Clouded Star Birth

In the star-forming region Lupus 3, in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion), dazzlingly hot stars are born from collapsing masses of gas and dust.

This short podcast showcases a new picture of this dramatic object, created from images taken using the VLT Survey Telescope and the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. It is the most detailed image taken so far of this region.

This zoom sequence starts with a view of the central parts of the Milky Way. We close in on a region in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). The final view is a combined image from data from both the VLT Survey Telescope and the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. It shows a dark cloud where new stars are forming along with a cluster of brilliant stars that have already burst out of their dusty stellar nursery. This cloud is known as Lupus 3 and it lies about 600 light-years from Earth. It is likely that the Sun formed in a similar star formation region more than four billion years ago.

This dense cloud is a star-forming region called Lupus 3, where dazzlingly hot stars are born from collapsing masses of gas and dust. This image was created from images taken using the VLT Survey Telescope and the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope and is the most detailed image taken so far of this region.

On January 31, 1961, a chimpanzee by the name of Ham blasted off on a Mercury-Redstone rocket and became the first hominid to go to space. Ham reached an altitude of 157 miles during a 16 and a half-minute flight and was recovered unharmed, but a bit dehydrated. The two-year-old chimpanzee underwent rigorous training before the flight and learned to do timed tasks in response to electric lights and sounds. Ham’s ability to accomplish tasks under the harsh conditions of spaceflight showed NASA that human astronauts could do the same.

SpaceX Launches GovSat 1 Atop Used Falcon 9 Rocket

The SES and Luxembourg government communications satellite was launched on Jan. 31, 2018 from Launch Complex 40 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “The satellite enables secure communication links between theaters of tactical operations, for maritime missions or over areas affected by humanitarian crises,” according to SpaceX.

The first stage of the rocket will not attempt to land due to the weight of the payload and the orbit it needed to be inserted into.

Hosted SpaceX GovSat-1/SES-16 With Everyday Astronaut

It's the second SpaceX launch of 2018! SpaceX will launch a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a 4200 KG satellite called GovSat-1/SES-16 to Geostationary Transfer Orbit. This satellite serves the Luxembourg Government and a commercial customer SES. This is the 2nd flight of this particular Falcon 9 1st stage, having first flown last year for the NROL-76 mission, but it will be its last.

Despite having plenty of fuel to land, they will be letting this one touch down softly in the ocean after its primary mission is over. This is because SpaceX has so many of these current block 3 boosters around which are not meant for long term reuse, and they require too much refurbishment to reuse them more than once, AND the drone ship needs to be ready for Falcon Heavy's center core next week.

This is the third time SES has opted to fly on a previously flown booster, they were the first customers to do so March, 2017 with mission SES-10. This is the 6th reuse of a booster for SpaceX. This is the 29th launch from SpaceX's launch pad, SLC-40, and the 48th over all launch of the Falcon 9.

On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia fell apart as it returned to Earth after spending more than two weeks in space. The accident instantly killed all seven astronauts on board. This was the second fatal accident of the space shuttle program following the Challenger disaster in 1986, and NASA suspended space shuttle flights for more than two years as it investigated the disaster. Investigators found that a piece of foam had broken off of the shuttle's external fuel tank during launch. That chunk of foam hit the shuttle's left wing and damaged the heat shield, which ultimately led to the spacecraft's destruction.

On February 2, 1967, the U.S. Air Force launched a top-secret surveillance satellite called Key Hole 7-36. This was the 36th of 38 satellites that the Air Force launched under a project codenamed Gambit. These satellites acquired some of the first high-resolution spy satellite images of places including China, the former Soviet Union, Israel and more. Key Hole 7-36 only spent about 10 days in orbit before returning to Earth with rolls of undeveloped film, which arrived in capsules that the Air Force then had to find and retrieve. Thousands of images from these spy satellite missions were declassified in 2002.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Just Discovered A Distant Galaxy By Using A Neat Magnification Trick

When conditions are just right, space can magically turn into a sort of magnifying glass, making even incredibly distant galaxies suddenly visible from here in the Milky Way. Now, the inherent power of the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with this trick, has let scientists stare at an incredibly faint corner of the universe they discover a new galaxy.

Astronomers identified the new galaxy as eMACSJ1341-QG-1, and, as they describe in a recent paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, it's not the first galaxy that has been discovered this way, but it's the most powerful example of the effect spotted so far for a galaxy so faint.

A University of Oklahoma astrophysics team has discovered for the first time a population of planets beyond the Milky Way galaxy. Using microlensing—an astronomical phenomenon and the only known method capable of discovering planets at truly great distances from the Earth among other detection techniques—OU researchers were able to detect objects in extragalactic galaxies that range from the mass of the Moon to the mass of Jupiter.
Xinyu Dai, professor in the Homer L. Dodge Department of Physics and Astronomy, OU College of Arts and Sciences, with OU postdoctoral researcher Eduardo Guerras, made the discovery with data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Chandra X-ray Observatory, a telescope in space that is controlled by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

Deciphering Eta Carinae’s Eruptive Twin

ESA's XMM-Newton has spotted surprising changes in the powerful streams of gas from two massive stars in the binary star system HD 5980. One of the two stars had a major outburst reminiscent of the 19th-century eruption of Eta Carinae, and astronomers expected that its X-ray emission would fade gently over the years. Instead, they found the pair was two and a half times brighter than a decade earlier, and its X-ray emission was even more energetic, suggesting that colliding stellar winds don’t behave as expected.

On February 3, 2006, astronauts at the International Space Station sent an empty spacesuit tumbling through space all by itself … for science. Known as SuitSat, this empty spacesuit was equipped with a radio transmitter that would constantly broadcast pre-recorded messages from scientists and students from around the world. It also broadcasted telemetry data, so amateur radio operators and citizen scientists on Earth could participate in tracking this creepy satellite. SuitSat only made it around the Earth twice before its batteries died prematurely, and it burned up while reentering Earth's atmosphere a few months later.

Predicted to reach a peak magnitude of +12.6 between 5 & 7 February, this near-Earth asteroid is a viable target for 6-inch (15-cm) aperture telescopes and larger as it zips through the constellations of Virgo, Leo and into Cancer.

'World's Smallest Satellite Launcher' Puts Cubesat Into Orbit

A 10 pounds (3 kilograms) cubesat called TRICOM 1R was launched by a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) SS-520-5 rocket on Feb. 2, 2018. The rocket is "just 31 feet (9.5 meters) tall and spanning around 20 inches (52 centimeters) in diameter," according to JAXA.

On This Day In Space | 4th February 1995 : STS-63 Launches 'Orbital Debris Calibration Sphere'

On February 4, 1995, astronauts aboard the space shuttle Discovery launched an itty bitty satellite called an Orbital Debris Calibration Sphere into orbit around the Earth. The satellite measured just 6 inches across, and it was one of six spheres that the astronauts deployed on mission STS-63. The spheres helped NASA calibrate equipment like telescopes and radars that were designed to track and measure space junk floating around in Earth's orbit. The spheres came in different sizes, and knowing the size of the spheres as they observed them from the ground allowed NASA scientists to calibrate their instruments so they could calculate the size of other objects floating around in space.
