On February 5, 1971, two Apollo 14 astronauts landed on the moon! Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard and the lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell left their crewmate Stuart Roosa in the command module and descended down to the moon in the lunar module Antares. Their descent was a little chaotic. A faulty switch was sending "abort" signals to the landing module's computer, and NASA had to reprogram the computer before they could land. Then the landing radar failed to measure the module's altitude and descent speed. The problem fixed itself just in time, and Shepard manually landed the spacecraft right on target.

A new study has found that the seven planets orbiting the nearby ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 are all made mostly of rock, and some could potentially hold more water than Earth. The planets' densities, now known much more precisely than before, suggest that some of them could have up to 5 percent of their mass in the form of water — about 250 times more than Earth's oceans

This artist’s impression video compares the seven planets orbiting the ultra-cool red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 at the same scale. New observations, when combined with very sophisticated analysis, have now yielded good estimates of the densities of all seven of the Earth-sized planets and suggest that they are rich in volatile materials, probably water.

They are shown to the same scale but not in the correct relative positions.

NASA Report:

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have conducted the first spectroscopic survey of Earth-sized planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system's habitable zone. Hubble reveals that at least the inner five planets do not seem to contain puffy, hydrogen-rich atmospheres similar to gaseous planets such as Neptune. This means the atmospheres may be more shallow and rich in heavier gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and oxygen.

120ft-Wide Asteroid Will Make An Extremely Close Encounter With Earth This Week

An asteroid measuring between 55 feet and 124 feet is set to pass Earth on February 9 at a distance of 0.14 LD (33,500 miles / 53,800 km).
This makes it the largest close approach asteroid to brush past Earth this year. This is also the second closest Earth flyby of any known asteroid this year.
The asteroid, named 2018 CB, was first observed at Catalina Sky Survey on February 4, five days before its closest approach to Earth.
It belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and it will fly past us at 09:47 UTC on February 9 at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 7.96 km/s.

It has a condition code of 8, (MPC "U" parameter: orbit uncertainty estimate 0-9, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain)

This is the 10th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the second this month.

However, there is also a second asteroid to flyby between the Earth and the Moon. The newly discovered asteroid designated 2018 CC will flyby Earth at a distance of 0.50 LD (191 485 km / 118 983 miles) on February 6, 2018.
This asteroid was also first observed at Catalina Sky Survey on February 4, two days before its closest approach to Earth.

It belongs to Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 13 and 29 m (43 - 95 feet).

The space rock will fly past us at 20:45 UTC on February 6 at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 10.53 km/s.

February offers the meteor observer in the northern hemisphere a couple of weak showers plus falling sporadic rates. This may not seem too exiting but you never know when surprises are in store. An errant earthgrazer from the Centaurid complex may shoot northward. Better yet, a bright fireball may light up the sky. February is the start of the fireball season, when an abundance of fireballs seem to occur. This lasts well into April and seems to occur mostly during the early evening hours. Rates are near maximum for those viewing from the Southern hemisphere. There are no strong showers this month but sporadic rates are well in excess of 10 per hour as seen from mid-southern latitudes.

On February 6, 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Al Shepard became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Though he was there doing scientific research, the impromptu one-man game of golf was really just for fun -- and it was on live television. Shepard made a makeshift golf club with a six-iron head that he smuggled from Earth, and he attached it to the handle of a lunar excavation tool. He brought two golf balls to hit. Because his spacesuit wasn't very flexible, he could only swing with one hand. One of the balls went into a nearby crater, and he claimed that the other flew for "miles and miles and miles."

There may be a large number of undetected bright, substellar objects similar to giant exoplanets in our own solar neighborhood, according to new work from a team led by Carnegie's Jonathan Gagné and including researchers from the Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) at Université de Montréal. Recent studies of an association of stars called TW Hya have revealed some of the first known isolated giant planet-sized objects in the neighborhood of our own Sun, about 100 light years away. This group contains a few dozen 10-million-year-old stars, all moving together through space.

Similarly-aged stars moving through space together in a group--described by astronomers as an association--are of great interest to researchers, because they are considered a prime target to hunt for brown dwarfs and free-floating planet-like objects.

On February 7, 1984, NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless became the first person to go on a spacewalk without a tether. McCandless was wearing a type of jetpack known as the Manned Maneuvering Unit, or MMU. The MMU fit over a regular EMU spacesuit and included gas thrusters that allowed astronauts to venture much farther away from the space shuttle. McCandless was able to venture 320 feet away from the space shuttle Challenger. The MMU was used during three space shuttle missions in 1984, and astronauts used it to retrieve two faulty communications satellites.

A Large Sunspot Launching Solar Flares Is Pointed At Earth Right Now

The unstable magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2699 erupted on Feb. 7th (1347 UT), producing a C8-class solar flare. A pulse of extreme UV radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, browning out shortwave radio transmissions below ~10 MHz over the South Atlantic ocean.

This class of explosion would be considered minor during more active phases of the solar cycle, but now on the eve of Solar Minimum it is a significant eruption. NOAA analysts have confirmed that this flare produced no CME, so there will be no geomagnetic storms as a result of the explosion.

The active region now has a Beta-Gamma magnetic layout and could produce moderate M-Flares. AR2699 is becoming larger and more unsettled as it turns toward Earth, so more flares are possible in the hours and days ahead.

It is her sincere belief that Ufology is a genuine science and that this phenomenon…whatever it is, needs to continue to be investigated, until we get the answers to the questions that so many others have asked.

Marie has been a Field Investigator since 2006, being promoted to the C.A.G. section of MUFON with the ability to do investigations nationally in 2016. Before moving onto to C.A.G, she was a Field Investigator for Michigan MUFON, having investigated over 100 Michigan cases. Through C.A.G., she is an acting State Director for MUFON Montana. On Feb. 8, 1974, the last crew of the Skylab space station returned to Earth. Skylab was the first and only American space station, and it supported three crewed missions. The third and final mission lasted 84 days. During their time inside the orbiting workshop, the three-person crew observed the sun, watched a comet fly by, and participated in several medical studies. The crew also performed the first-ever strike in space by cutting off communications with NASA when they became overwhelmed with their workload. They ended up doing more work than what was planned before their capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, marking the end of the Skylab program.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is the next step in the search for planets outside of our solar system, including those that could support life. The mission will find exoplanets that periodically block part of the light from their host stars, events called transits.

TESS will survey 200,000 of the brightest stars near the sun to search for transiting exoplanets. The mission is scheduled to launch in 2018.

5 Alien Worlds : The Planetary System Around K2-138

Over the three years of the K2 mission, 287,309 stars have been observed, and tens of thousands more roll in every few months. So how do astronomers sift through all that data?

A new discovery of a planetary system around the star K2-138 containing five planets that contain ice and gas, and maybe even be rocky is a result of observations with the K2 (Kepler extension) mission. Data from the K2 mission is made available to everyone through Zooniverse, a citizen science portal. A software package containing a signal-detection algorithm identifies potential transit signals in the K2 data. Those targets are made available to the public to peruse and find interesting objects. The website contains a training module so that interested individuals can quickly learn what to search for.
The new, tightly packed planetary system contains planets between the size of Earth and Neptune that are circular, compared to our own solar system where the planets have elliptical orbits. The orbits of the planets are short - between 2 and 13 days! This means they are close to their parent K-type star and therefore are quite hot.

On February 9, 1913, hundreds of fireball meteors rained down on North America for no apparent reason. This strange event is known as the Great Meteor Procession of 1913. With typical meteor showers, meteors appear to originate from the same point in the sky called the radiant. But these meteors weren't shooting out from any kind of radiant. Instead, they seemed to be flying in formation and moving horizontally through the sky, parallel to Earth's surface. The meteors were also moving unusually slow, and the procession lasted for several minutes. To this day, astronomers aren't really sure what was up with this bizarre meteor shower.

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is now one of the most distant human-made objects, and it just took the most distant photograph ever. The image of an icy rock in the Kuiper belt has had colour added to increase the contrast.

After its visit to Pluto, the spacecraft headed out toward the Kuiper belt on its way to its next target, a Kuiper belt object (KBO) called 2014 MU69. It is now about 41 times as far from Earth as Earth is from the sun. There are only four spacecraft that have ever traveled that far from home: Voyager 1 and 2, and Pioneer 10 and 11.

But New Horizons is the first to send back a picture for so far afield. Its four predecessors did not send back images because their cameras were shut down before they got that far away.

A month and a half since the groundbreaking front page of the New York Times that headlined glowing auras and black money the Pentagon's mysterious UFO program, The Times website contained a 34 second jet fighter gun camera infrared video of a UFO doing a rotation without losing altitude off the coast of San Diego California during November 2004 training exercises with the USS Nimitz. It was also referred to as the tic-tac video because the UFO was oblong and white colored like tic-tac candy.

The New York Times stressed that the infrared video was officially released by the Defense Department's advanced aerospace threat identification program also known as AAT IP the front page article states quote “the Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the AAT IP program” close quote. Two days after the New York Times had released the Pentagon's 34 second infrared video on Monday December 18 2017 the Washington Post released a 2 minute and 45 second longer infrared gun camera video identified as gimbal which refers to technology the background information states that this longer more sensitive video. quote “means that the date location and other information have been removed by the originating Authority as part of the release approval process” close quote.

On February 10, 1958, scientists at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory bounced radar waves off of Venus. At the time, Venus was at a point in its orbit called inferior conjunction, where it is directly in between the Earth and the sun. Scientists beamed a radar signal toward Venus, which was about 28 million miles away at the time. It took about 5 minutes for the signal to bounce off of Venus and return to Earth. This was slightly shorter than they anticipated, which means that Venus was actually closer to Earth than scientists believed at the time.

STEREO COR 2 solar spacecraft captured a large sungrazer comet crashing into the Sun on February 8, 2018. In these time-lapse images from the sun-monitoring satellite you can see the comet's huge tail as the comet makes a death dive towards the sun.

A sungrazing comet is a comet that passes extremely close to the Sun at perihelion – sometimes within a few thousand kilometres of the Sun's surface. Although small sungrazers can completely evaporate during such a close approach to the Sun, larger sungrazers can survive many perihelion passages. However, the strong evaporation and tidal forces they experience often lead to their fragmentation.

NASA’s SDO Sees Total Eclipse in Space
Today, (February 11, 20180, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, saw a total solar eclipse in space when it caught the Earth passing in front of the Sun. The Earth transit lasted almost 45 minutes between 0705 and 0745 UTC, with the Earth covering 100 percent of the sun at the peak of its journey across the Sun’s face.

Eclipse Season Begins for SDO
The 2018 spring eclipse season of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory began Feb. 10, 2018. These seasons – a time when Earth blocks SDO's view of the sun for a period of time each day – last around three weeks and happen twice a year near the equinoxes.

The eclipses are fairly short near the beginning and end of the season but ramp up to 72 minutes in the middle. Most spacecraft observing the sun from an orbit around Earth have to contend with such eclipses, but SDO's orbit is designed to minimize them as much as possible, as they block observations of the sun. The spring season will end on March 03, 2018.

Scientists Shocked By Massive Discovery About The Sun

Scientists believe the sun is about to go through a major cooling event that could have a big impact on global temperatures.

Scientists say that we could be in for a very big event with regards to the sun, with a “grand minimum” approaching around the 2050 time frame. That would mean that the sun would be at an unusually low point in its normally steady 11-year cycles, which could result in global cooling temperatures.

It is not clear how that might impact global warming and climate change, but scientists are studying the situation further to figure out just how much cooling might happen and when exactly it would occur. The last such major minimum happened back in the 17th century, called the “Maunder Minimum” that caused the freezing of the Thames river in England as well as the Baltic Sea.

On May 22nd, 1949, Forrestal fell to his death from the sixteenth-floor window of Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he was treated for “depression”. An official U.S. Navy Medical Review Board convened on his death, after examining all doctors and witnesses who were in the vicinity. They could not establish the reason for Forrestal's fall. The peculiar circumstances of Forrestal's death, and the U.S. government's withholding of the complete report of the review board until 2004 has led to much speculation and controversy.

What many are not aware of is that Forrestal has also been connected to the controversial MJ-12 group, an alleged secret committee of scientists, military leaders, and government officials, formed in 1947 by an executive order by then U.S. President, Harry Truman, to facilitate recovery and investigation of alien spacecraft. Before his departure as Secretary of Defense, Forrestal had a mental breakdown, which ultimately led to his untimely death. What did he know? What was he told? And what exactly happened to him in the hospital as he plunged downward into tragedy and questionable history?

Scientists have discovered that supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies may be growing faster than their host galaxies.

This challenges the long-held belief that black holes and their galaxies grow in lockstep.

Astronomers used very deep data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes to make this discovery.

These data allowed them to peer back billions of years in cosmic history to see how the black holes and galaxies behaved.

Astronomers are excited to figure out why and how these black holes grew so quickly.

Two groups of scientists, using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, have found evidence that the growth of the biggest black holes in the Universe is outrunning the rate of formation of stars in the galaxies they inhabit.

This would be quite a surprise. Over many years, astronomers have gathered data on the formation of stars in galaxies and the growth of supermassive black holes — that is, those with millions or billions the mass of the Sun — in their centers. These data suggested that the black holes and the stars in their host galaxies grow in tandem with each other.

Now, findings from two independent groups of researchers indicate that the black holes in massive galaxies have grown much faster than in the less massive ones.

Using large amounts of data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, the world's biggest radio telescopes, and more, these scientists have reconstructed a race that began billions of years ago.

This research leads the astronomers to ask: why? What leads these giant black holes to get a jump on growth over their galactic hosts? Do they simply grow faster or do they have a head start?

While these are difficult questions to answer, luckily astronomers have amazing resources like the Chandra Deep Field-South at their disposal. This dataset is the deepest X-ray image ever obtained, representing millions of seconds of Chandra exposure time. This one dataset gives astronomers a window into what black holes were doing billions of years ago. Let's see what new discoveries will come next.

Andromeda Galaxy Was Formed In 'Recent' Colossal Crash Between Two Star Systems

The Milky Way's neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda, was formed in a colossal crash between two smaller star systems no more than three billion years ago when Earth already existed, researchers said Wednesday.

Calculating the birth date of the galaxy has been a major challenge for astrophysicists given the vast age gap between the different stars it is made up of.

For the latest study, French and Chinese researchers led by Paris Observatory astronomer Francois Hammer used "the most powerful available computers in France" to crunch about a terabyte of data—the equivalent of two million 500-kilobyte photos.

This allowed them to zoom in on "the physical mechanisms of the Andromeda formation, so lifting the veil on its origin," the observatory said in a statement.

In Andromeda, certain stars orbit erratically while in the Milky Way, all stars observe a simple rotation around the galaxy's centre.

Why?

The star agitation was due to the galaxy's "recent" formation, the team said.

On February 16, 1948, the Dutch-American astronomer Gerard Kuiper discovered Miranda, a moon of Uranus. This was the fifth moon to be discovered at Uranus, but astronomers have found 27 by now. When Kuiper first spotted Miranda, he was at the McDonald Observatory in Texas, where he used the 82-inch Otto Struve Telescope. Two weeks later, he was able to confirm that the thing he saw was a moon orbiting Uranus. He chose to name the moon Miranda after a character in Shakespeare's "The Tempest," because the other four moons were also named after Shakespeare characters.

This bright and slow meteor was spotted over Spain on Feb. 16, at 21:52 local time (20:52 universal time). It was produced by a fragment from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 43000 km/h. The meteor overflew the south of Spain. It began over the province of Cordoba at a height of around 75 km, and ended at an altitude of about 26 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Sevilla.

A rare meteorite that plowed through the Arizona desert nearly 50,000 years ago sold for a staggering $237,500 during an online auction.

Weighing in at 70 lbs. (32 kilograms), this meteorite is made of iron and comes from the Barringer Meteorite Crater, also known as Meteor Crater, located near Winslow, Arizona. The meteorite originated from a small asteroid roughly 130 feet (40 meters) wide.

NASA has certified the current version of the SpaceX Falcon 9 to launch some categories of science missions, a milestone needed for the upcoming, but delayed, launch of an astronomy spacecraft.

NASA disclosed the certification in its full fiscal year 2019 budget proposal, released Feb. 14, in a section about NASA’s Launch Services Program (LSP). “In January 2018, SpaceX successfully completed ‘Category 2’ certification of the SpaceX Falcon 9 ‘Full Thrust’ with LSP which supports the launch of the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission in March 2018,” it stated.

On February 17, 2007, NASA launched a quintet of satellites to figure out the science behind Earth's most colorful auroras. The mission was titled THEMIS, which stands for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms. Substorms happen when Earth's magnetosphere is disrupted by solar wind, or energetic particles flowing from the sun. This causes auroras to brighten and undulate in the sky. THEMIS helped scientists understand what triggers these substorms. All five THEMIS satellites launched on the same Delta II rocket before splitting up to orbit Earth in formation.

Sun On Brink Of Plunging Into ‘Deep Solar Minimum’

When we look up at the sun from Earth, it seems calm and unchanging. The truth is quite different.

In addition to these abrupt changes in activity, the sun also has long term, more regular pattern of change. This pattern is called the sunspot cycle and a single cycle lasts for about 11 years, although it can be as short as 8 or as long as 14 and it can vary dramatically in intensity.

During one cycle, the number of sunspots, a good indicator of solar activity, goes from low to high and back down to low. Solar minimum represents a time when sunspot numbers are relatively low, and solar maximum represents a period when sunspot numbers are relatively high.

During this cycle, the location of the sunspots also changes. They are at middle latitudes during solar maximum, and move closer to the equator as the sun approaches solar minimum. At solar minimum, there are sometimes no sunspots to observe.

At solar maximum there can be many at the same time. The number of sunspots is important because sunspots are the visual markers of where powerful magnetic fields have emerged from the sun's interior. These magnetic fields power solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which can affect Earth and other objects in the solar system.

As the sunspots increase, so does the frequency and severity of flares and CMEs. The sun's 11-year cycle is a symptom of a longer, 22-year-cycle called the solar cycle, or Hale Cycle, which affects the sun's magnetic fields. Every 11 years, the sun's poles flip--north becomes south and south becomes north, so every 22 years, the poles return to the position where they started the cycle.

The flip is due to the complex movement of magnetic fields inside the sun that are constantly stretching, twisting, and crossing as solar material bubbles up from the sun's core. But the exact pattern of movements is not yet mapped out. Because the sunspot cycle follows a similar pattern regardless of the orientation of the poles, it only takes half as long as the solar cycle.

The two cycles are different, but the 11-year sunspot cycle is often referred to as the solar cycle, which can be a little confusing. Solar Cycle 24 should reach its minimum around 2020 although predictions about the sun are still uncertain. The slower than expected progress of this sunspot cycle has led some to speculate that the next sunspot cycle might be very minimal, with few sunspots even at solar maximum.

It is still far too early to know, but we may be on the verge of a 'deep solar minimum', which is a period of low activity. The sun last behaved this way eleven years ago (2008-2009) - leading scientists to believe there's a solar change on the cards.
It will be 2019 before we reach the peak minimum, but that we're already seeing strange things going on with our star.

For the first time since Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, Joshua P. Warren reported live from the island, discussing a variety of weird stories surrounding the storm, the appearance of harbingers that warn of impending tragedies, and bizarre UFO sightings. "Harbingers are these manifestations that occur before some traumatic event," Warren explained, recounting the tale of the Gray Man of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, who warns residents of coming severe storms and hurricanes.

People in Puerto Rico feel hurricanes are living spirits and strange activity usually accompanies them, he continued. On the island there have been reports over the last decade of a six-foot-tall Gargola with bat wings and a Doberman Pinscher snout spotted ahead of hurricanes. "They would see the Gargola flying around the sky at night, sometimes he would just be seen walking through a field or across the road," he said. According to Warren, he has spoken to five active duty police officers who claimed to have seen the Gargola.

Other Puerto Rican residents have reportedly witnessed balls of light hovering in their bedrooms at night. "When people wake up and see this in the bedroom they are absolutely petrified," Warren said. The balls of light emit a sound that females hear as a sped-up recording and males hear as a voice announcing the coming of a major event with assurances the couple will be safe, Warren, revealed. The sightings of harbingers may involve a build up and discharge of energy associated with the forthcoming occurrence, he noted.

Increased military presence since the last hurricane has brought an uptick in sightings of strange craft, Warren reported. On February 18, 1930, the American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto! Before he discovered Pluto, another astronomer named Percival Lowell had spent over a decade trying to find it. He had theorized that a ninth planet existed based on wobbles seen in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. But it wasn't until Tombaugh started using a new observation technique that Pluto was first spotted. The new technique involved something called a blink microscope, which Tombaugh used to compare photographic plates and look for signs of moving objects.

ESA is developing missions to tackle the problem to help prevent a serious collision in space. The Agency is also monitoring possible dangers caused by fragments of redundant spacecraft falling to Earth, such as China’s space station Tiangong-1 – due to enter the atmosphere in the coming months.

On February 19, 1986, the Soviet Union launched the Mir space station. While this wasn't the first space station launched into orbit, it was the first one that had to be assembled piece-by-piece in space. Mir enabled the first long-duration human spaceflight missions. The current record for the longest stay in space was set aboard the Mir space station by cosmonaut Valeri Vladimirovich Polyakov, who spent 437 consecutive days in orbit. The Soviets used Mir to do all kinds of scientific research for 15 years before funding for the program was cut, and Mir fell back to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere along the way.

X3 is a powerful ion thruster that could one day propel humans beyond Earth. The thruster was successfully tested few months ago, and could be selected by NASA as a crucial component of propulsion system for future Mars missions.
X3 is a Hall-effect thruster—a type of ion thruster in which the propellant (most commonly xenon) is accelerated by electric and magnetic fields. Such thrusters are safer and more fuel efficient than engines used in traditional chemical rockets. However, they currently offer relatively low thrust and acceleration. Therefore, engineers are still working to make them more powerful.

An international team of astronomers has conducted a multi-frequency study of NGC 6744, one of the most Milky Way-like spiral galaxies. The new research, published February 8 in a paper on arXiv.org, identifies radio and X-ray sources in NGC 6744 and estimates its star formation rate.
Discovered in 1823, NGC 6744 is an intermediate spiral galaxy located some about 30 million light years away in the constellation Pavo. It is thought to be one of the most Milky Way-like spiral galaxies in our immediate vicinity, and is perceived by astronomers as a useful analogue to our own galaxy when it comes to studying objects such as supernova remnants and H II regions—clouds of glowing gas and plasma in which star formation takes place.

New research in to how Earth's atmosphere evolved over time could hold the key to detecting life on exoplanets, according to scientists from the University of St Andrews and Cornell University.
The new study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, details how Earth's atmosphere evolved over time and how this corresponds to the appearance of different forms of life.
The team, led by Dr. Sarah Rugheimer, astronomer and astrobiologist from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University, studied different geological epochs from Earth's history, modelling the atmospheres around different stars, bigger and smaller than our Sun. The researchers found that a planet's star type is an important factor in how an exoplanet's atmosphere develops and in how detectable signs of life, aka biosignatures, will be.

ESA’s Earth Explorer Aeolus satellite will be launched later this year to measure the world’s winds from space. The satellite carries one of the most sophisticated instruments ever to be put into orbit: Aladin, which includes two powerful lasers, a large telescope and very sensitive receivers. The laser generates ultraviolet light that is beamed down into the atmosphere to profile the world’s winds – a completely new approach to measuring the wind from space. These vertical slices through the atmosphere, along with information it gathers on aerosols and clouds, will improve our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and contribute to climate research. As well as advancing science, Aeolus will play an important role in improving weather forecasts. The mission will also complement information about the atmosphere being provided by the Copernicus Sentinel missions.

On February 20, 1962, NASA launched an astronaut into orbit around the Earth for the first time. John Glenn was the third American to launch into space and the third human to orbit Earth. Two Soviet cosmonauts had orbited Earth before him. He blasted off from Cape Canaveral in a Mercury spacecraft named Friendship 7 and circled the Earth three times. The mission lasted close to five hours. After a bumpy reentry, Friendship 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean about 40 miles away from where it was supposed to land. But all is well that ends well, and John Glenn went down in history as an American hero.

Using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument astronomers have discovered an extended and broad Lyman-alpha emission in the form of a nebula around the quasar J1605-0112. The finding is reported February 9 in a paper published on the arXiv pre-print repository.
J1605-0112 is a radio-quiet quasar at a redshift of 4.92. Astronomers have classified this object as one of the broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. Although BAL quasars have been studied for over 30 years, researchers are still uncertain why broad absorption lines are observed in such objects

On February 24 Moon and the Winter Circle can be found in the southern sky. You can see the circular pattern of stars around the Moon at nightfall.

The Winter Circle is a prominent winter asterism formed by seven stars prominent in the winter sky. These are Rigel in Orion Aldebaran in Taurus, Capella in Auriga, Castor and Pollux in Gemini, Procyon in Canis Minor, and Sirious in Canis Major constellation.

Sirius and Procyon are also part of the Winter Triangle , a smaller asterism that these stars form with Betelgeuse in Orion.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the Winter Circle will appear upside-down relative to our northern view with the star Sirius at top and the star Capella at the bottom.

Eric Becklin | Fifty-Four Years Of Adventures In Infrared Astronomy

To Qoute Eric "My adventures in infrared astronomy started when I was a grad student in 1965 with the discovery of an infrared-bright object (now known as the Becklin-Neugebauer Object) in the Orion Nebula. In 1966, I made the first measurements of the infrared radiation from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. I was fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of the 2.2 micron sky survey carried out by Neugebauer and Leighton (1969), which produced many remarkable discoveries, the most spectacular being the heavily dust-embedded carbon star IRC+10216, the brightest object in the sky at 5 microns outside the solar system. In the 1970’s there was a growth in Infrared astronomy with the availability of many new facilities such as the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, (KAO) which I used extensively with Mike Werner and Ian Gatley for many unique observations. In 1977, I moved to Hawaii to work on the NASA IRTF 3-meter telescope. Many discoveries were made, including the first L dwarf star around a white dwarf (with Ben Zuckerman). In the 1980’s the introduction of large format arrays changed the way we did infrared astronomy. With Ian McLean, I moved to UCLA in 1990 to start the IR lab and get involved in Keck development and science. In 1995, Andrea, Ghez, Mark Morris and I started looking for evidence of a possible massive Black Hole in the Galactic Center. Spectacular observations using the Keck 10 meter telescopes with large format near-infrared arrays and adaptive optics led to the confirmation of the presence of such a black hole and an estimate of its mass (4x106 M(Sun)). In 1996, I began working on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and I will finish my talk by discussing SOFIA observations of the ring of dust and gas orbiting the massive black hole in the center of our Galaxy and other recent discoveries."

On February 21, 1931, Germany launched its first liquid-fueled rocket … sort of. The rocket only made it about ten feet off the ground. To be fair, the rocket itself was only two feet tall, so it did achieve an altitude of about five times its height. The rocket was named Hückel-Winkler 1 after the engineers who designed and built it. It was powered by a combination of liquid oxygen and liquid methane. Hückel-Winkler 1 lifted off from a drilling field near Dessau, Germany on two separate flights. After the first launch was a failure, the rocket did reach its planned altitude of 500 feet during its second flight three weeks later.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft captured this image during its 11th close flyby of planet Jupiter on February 7, 2018. The image shows swirling cloud formations in the northern area of the planet’s north temperate belt.

At the time the image was taken, the spacecraft was about 5,086 miles (8,186 km) from the tops of the clouds of the planet, at a latitude of 39.9 degrees.

Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter Completes Aerobraking

Since arriving at Mars in October 2016, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has been aerobraking its way into a close orbit of the Red Planet by using the top of the atmosphere to create drag and slow down. It is almost in the right orbit to begin observations – only a few hundred kilometres to go! With aerobraking complete, additional manoeuvres will bring the craft into a near-circular two-hour orbit, about 400 km above the plane, by the end of April. The mission’s main goal is to take a detailed inventory of the atmosphere, sniffing out gases like methane, which may be an indicator of active geological or biological activity. The camera will help to identify surface features that may be related to gas emissions. The spacecraft will also look for water-ice hidden below the surface, which could influence the choice of landing sites for future exploration. It will also relay large volumes of science data from NASA’s rovers on the surface back to Earth and from the ESA–Roscosmos ExoMars rover, which is planned for launch in 2020.

In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope snapped one of the most iconic images of all-time: the famed "Pillars of Creation" in the Eagle Nebula. One of the galaxy's closest and most productive regions of active star formation, these pillars represent what's left of the neutral gas that powers the creation of these new stars. But new stars aren't just a cosmic signpost of creation; they also bring destruction with them. When you form new stars, a fraction of them will be massive enough to go supernova, with these catastrophic explosions rapidly burning off and expelling the gas around them. Others will burn fantastically hot, evaporating this gas more slowly. What we're seeing, inside this nebula, is a mix of these two processes. Years ago, a NASA study claimed that a supernova recently occurred inside, and that the pillars were already destroyed. Now, we've learned that was in error, and they'll likely remain for hundreds of thousands of years before slowly evaporating away.

Michio Kaku discussed his latest work which explores the process by which humanity may gradually move away from the planet and develop a sustainable civilization in outer space. The dinosaurs didn't have a "plan B" and got wiped off the planet after an asteroid hit. Kaku recalled how Carl Sagan told him that humans need an "insurance policy" against such a catastrophe and that means getting a contingent off-world. With companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX bringing down the cost of space transport, and NASA going back to the moon in 2019, there is currently more excitement around space endeavors, he indicated.

Travel to Mars is becoming closer to reality, he reported, and the planet has specific geographic features that are suitable to set up outposts, such as lava tubes that are essentially ready-made caves. One of the first projects is to set up a mining operation for ice, which can be separated out into drinking water, oxygen for breathing, and hydrogen for rocket fuel, he detailed, adding that agriculture will follow with genetically modified algae and other plants that can thrive in the harsh Martian climate. He doesn't foresee full-fledged terraforming of the Red Planet taking place until the 22nd century. Kaku also talked about the four types of advanced civilizations, and how Type 3 may use black holes as gateways and power supplies.

On February 22, 1966, two Soviet space dogs launched on a mission that would set a new record for the longest spaceflight. Veterok and Ugolyok, whose names translate to "Light Breeze" and "Coal" spent 22 days orbiting the Earth. Great Planetary Alignment Of 2018 - See All Five Bright Planets In The Night Sky

If you live in the North Hemisphere, March 2018 is a great month for catching all five bright planets, either after sunset or before dawn. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere you'll have your best chance to catch the five planets in April 2018.

Visible planets are those that can be seen with the naked eye, as opposed to Uranus, Neptune and former planet Pluto, which require telescopes to be viewed.

Venus and Mercury will be visible from Earth after sunset. The two planets will be very near each other on the sky's dome all month long. Look low in the west just after sunset.

Mars, Saturn and Jupiter will be visible after midnight or in the predawn hours.

Goonhilly Earth Station, Cornwall has won an £8.4 million investment to upgrade its biggest antenna.

This will help it track and control forthcoming robotic and human missions in global space exploration.

The new project, announced by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), will be the first time the UK has had the capability to communicate directly with deep-space missions.

Probing Our Dynamic Outer Solar System

The outskirts of our solar system is a region dominated by the solar wind flowing away from the Sun and encountering the interstellar material (ISM) in space.

The solar wind is also magnetized and creates a bubble, called the heliosphere, around our planetary system. The bubble's shape depends on the strength of the wind and the properties of the ISM. But this distant region is difficult to probe. In order to understand what is going on in the heliosphere, data from the Voyager space craft and the International Boundary Explorer (called IBEX) have been used. IBEX is able to measure atoms in the heliosphere and the Voyager spacecraft measure the properties of the plasma field. Importantly though, all this accumulated information must be fed into complicated models to understand the detailed structure of the boundary layer.

On February 23, 1990, NASA's Pioneer 11 spacecraft left the solar system! This was the second spacecraft to travel beyond the planetary part of our solar system, which ends at Neptune's orbit. An almost identical spacecraft named Pioneer 10 made it past Neptune's orbit about seven years earlier. Both Pioneer spacecraft carried gold plaques with information about Earth just in case they encountered any aliens out there in space. On its way out to interstellar space, Pioneer 11 flew through the asteroid belt and swung by Jupiter and Saturn.

Back in the mid-'70s during the summertime, several astronomy-minded friends and I would pile into my beat-up Chevy Impala and travel a couple hundred miles north of New York City up Interstate 87 to Warrensburg, New York. Not far from there was a campsite where we would spend time with our telescopes, observing the dark, star-spangled skies of the Adirondacks. Of course, other campers always gravitated to our campsite, where we enjoyed pointing out celestial sights and providing star-identification tips.

On February 24, 1968, an astronomy grad student Jocelyn Bell announced that she had discovered the first pulsar. A few months earlier, she noticed what she called a "bit of scruff" in the data from her telescope. A signal was sending pulses every 1.3 seconds. At first she and her advisor, Anthony Hewish, thought it could have come from aliens. They ruled out that option when they found another signal coming from a different part of the sky. Bell and Hewish found four pulsars before publishing their findings, but they still had no explanation. Scientists have since figured out that pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars that radiate narrow beams of light in opposite directions.

North Korean Super Volcano On Brink Of Eruption Scientists Warn

Supervolcanoes are volcanoes that spread over miles in diameter. For instance Yellowstone is one of the largest known volcanoes in the world and the largest volcanic system in North America.

Supervolcanoes like this one pass unnoticed because it is at ground level. If it were to go off, North America, or more like the entire North Hemisphere would be affected.

Now the said North Korean supervolcano, Mount Paektu, rises to 9000 ft high and its caldera is a lake of about 8 miles across. The magma chamber underneath thus has gigantic dimensions, and its vertical conduit is even more problematic.

The danger comes from two simultaneous causes. The first one comes from the fact that Korean military has a nuclear test ground in the vicinity. The second is that scientists have studied Mt Paektu’s behavior and activity, leading to the conclusion that it is theoretically ready to unleash its pressure.

Supervolcanoes have long been thought to be triggered by meteorite impacts, rippling Earth’s crust and building up its magma chamber’s pressure to the breaking point, but new worrying studies indicate that it is not the case. A behemoth volcano like the ones cited here can explode without prior stimulation in a matter of days. If nuclear detonations in the test ground territory were to shake the ground enough to tickle the supervolcano, it might be enough to trigger the upholding eruption. The cataclysmic magma and sulfur eruptions that would result would then endanger life itself on the entire planet.

On February 25, 1982, the Western Union company launched a communication satellite called Westar 4. Western Union was the first American telecommunications company to have a fleet of its own satellites. Westar 4 was twice as big as the first three Westar satellites and had four times the communications capacity. It lifted off from Cape Canaveral on a Delta 3910 rocket at 7:04 p.m. Eastern Time and entered a geostationary orbit. For 10 years the satellite relayed voice, data, video and fax communications before it was replaced. While it is no longer operational, it is still orbiting the Earth today.

Jupiter's Moon Europa Shows Possibility Of Life

Scientists have discovered the great possibility of the existence of life on Jupiter's icy moon Europa.

Based on a theoretical research, scientists from the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil evaluated microbial habitability of Europa using data collected from similar environments on the Earth.

“We studied the possible effects of a biologically usable energy source on Europa based on information obtained from an analogous environment on Earth,” said Douglas Galante, a researcher at Brazil’s National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS).

The scientists discovered a site on Earth with a similar terrestrial context to Europa. They also found Mponeng gold mine near Johannesburg, South Africa, at a depth of 2.8 km with traces of major changes linked to history of life on Earth.
